Upon Mexico's independence, its Regency dispatched commissioner Agustín Fernández de San Vicente to ensure the allegiance of officials and residents of remote Alta California. His strategies for this pivotal commission are analyzed for the first time here. Fernández, inspired by the grand style of the new emperor, Agustín Iturbide, designed a lavish presentation meant for mass appeal. Literature on the commission has been dominated to date by the biased and belated eyewitness testimony of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and Juan Bautista Alvarado, who depicted Fernández as a sleazy demagogue. This article critically examines their interventions and the conditions under which these were produced. Their stories about the commissioner drinking and gambling were probably exaggerated. Giovanni Pontano's dialogue Antonius can be read almost as a thick description of the soundscape of a Neapolitan street in the mid‐ to late‐15th century, complete with public announcements, street performers, domestic arguments, workers' banter, charms and spells, processions, errand boys, bells, clocks, cockerels, and much more. Antonius was first printed in 1491, and then in a 1501 Opera edition alongside another dialogue, Charon, Pontano's treatises De fortitudine, De principe and De obedientia, and his treatises on the "social virtues," De liberalitate, De benificentia, De magnificentia, De splendore, and De conviventia. Using the street soundscape of Antonius as a framework, this essay interleaves both sonic reportage and reflections on the ethics and purpose of sound drawn from the other works included in the 1501 edition, to construct a rich and surprisingly detailed impression of the urban soundscape as it struck Pontano, or at least as he represented it in a literary context. Valcamonica is an Italian Alpine valley that has been the transit route for people and goods in prehistoric, Roman, medieval, and modern times. This led to the presence of artefacts from different eras and/or the occurrence of artefacts made of non-coeval parts. This research reports the characterization of an artefact in the Museum of Breno (Brescia Province). It is surmised that the artwork is made of different and non-coeval parts. The aim of the research is to investigate the natural pigments dyeing the different parts of the artefact, to infer information also on the origin and the dating. The investigation is supported by different analytical techniques (microscopic, spectroscopic, chromatographic, and spectrometric evaluation). The artifact is an Imago Pietatis, with Christ emerging from the tomb with his open arms. Microscopic observation allowed a preliminary evaluation of the colouration and to hypothesize the pigments used. 1H NMR analysis and spectrophotometric analysis suggested the presence of Tyrian purple and logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) in the background of the sacred image, that was probably a liturgical vestment dismembered and overdyed. It is very likely that the image was in use to a brotherhood of Disciplini, a secular congregation very active in Valcamonica whose activities consisted in praying for the dead and making processions. Our work was important for the narration of this artefact and could be useful for the reconstruction of the object in the original colours, for providing to the local stakeholders a suitable recognition for this historical discovery. Hippocampal place cells in freely moving rodents display both theta phase precession and procession, which is thought to play important roles in cognition, but the neural mechanism for producing theta phase shift remains largely unknown. Here, we show that firing rate adaptation within a continuous attractor neural network causes the neural activity bump to oscillate around the external input, resembling theta sweeps of decoded position during locomotion. These forward and backward sweeps naturally account for theta phase precession and procession of individual neurons, respectively. By tuning the adaptation strength, our model explains the difference between 'bimodal cells' showing interleaved phase precession and procession, and 'unimodal cells' in which phase precession predominates. Our model also explains the constant cycling of theta sweeps along different arms in a T-maze environment, the speed modulation of place cells' firing frequency, and the continued phase shift after transient silencing of the hippocampus. This article explores the significance of popular religious agents in Iran, focusing on the maddāḥān (eulogists) and their role in the Ashura processions, in the context of Iran's ethnic minorities, looking into the unique case-study of Khuzestan. To comprehend the contemporary relevance of Ashura, this study utilizes social media, employing a hermeneutical approach to videography. The maddāḥān played a pivotal role in promoting a unifying Shiʿi and revolutionary ethos through their meticulously crafted videos and their widespread dissemination, fostering a sense of solidarity with the Islamic republic and its message of resilience. Their contribution was significant among ethnic minorities, given their numerous grievances toward the regime. The maddāḥān also played a vital role in creating space for local expressions of mourning, enhancing a unique Khuzestani identity deeply tied to its Arab tradition, but also open to multiple influences. Their emotionally charged sessions and direct engagement with the people contributed to a strong sense of connections between the maddāḥān and their extensive online audience. This popular appeal complements the established clerical authority structure but also poses a significant challenge to the formal religious hierarchy, as the maddāḥān's approach resonates more closely with the lived experiences and cultural realities of their followers. The practice of dressing the cult statue of Artemis in radiant garments was quite widespread in antiquity. During religious festivals, such garments were carried in procession and displayed for the benefit of spectators. By virtue of their contact with the statue, such robes were considered to be bearers of the power of the deity itself. This may provide an intriguing parallel to the strange scene wherein Paul's thaumaturgical activity in Ephesus is undertaken by means of cloths which, upon contact with his skin, acquire a healing and exorcising power. This article tries to develop the comparison. In turn, the effectiveness of the apostle's poor textiles in the face of the splendor of the patroness of Ephesus constitutes a profound theological statement. This statement not only offers an implicit critique of pagan worship, but also firmly establishes in the apostle's hands a humble and unobtrusive, yet highly effective, means of salvation. Taiwanese popular religion has encountered significant challenges due to the sweeping social changes accompanying the modernization of Taiwanese society. This paper seeks to uncover the distinct dynamics at play, focusing on the transformation of procession troupes, which are an essential part of important religious events known as divine processions: a common collective ritual among local worship communities in Taiwan. Two pivotal external forces have surfaced, providing traditional procession troupes with opportunities for revitalization amidst what had been waning relevance. The first is the narrative of cultural heritage advanced by the public sector, and the second is the commercialization trend of the troupe market. The interplay of 'cultural coding' and 'commercial coding' has emerged as a key factor in maintaining the relevance and operations of traditional procession troupes in contemporary times. The analysis in this paper reveals that the modern evolution of popular religion is grounded not in its religious core but rather in the cultural significance of its rituals amidst the broader process of 'culturalization of religion'. This study analyzes the relationship between the fishing community and the sea which is manifested through the ritual of sea alms. The theory used is Bruno Latour's ANT theory which has five concepts, namely actors, networks, actants, translations, and intermediaries. The researcher focuses on the concept of network actors, and translations. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative research method. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants who were interviewed were fishermen, fishermen's families, traditional leaders (community leaders), and the surrounding community following the sea alms tradition. The results show that the process of the sea alms tradition begins with a procession to the river mouth to bring umborambe (offerings) which are put into julen (miniature joglo houses) containing clothing, goat heads and feet, fruits, and other objects that are considered the favorite of the ruler of the ocean (Nyi Roro Kidul) to be floated to the sea. Bruno Latour's ANT theory explains that there is a relationship between humans and non-humans that influence each other and form a network in the form of sea alms. I argue that the classical doctrine of the eternal processions (CDEP) is inconsistent with the doctrine of creation ex nihilo (DCEN). More specifically, I argue that the metaphysical entailments of each doctrine are inconsistent with one another. According to the CDEP, God must be atemporal and immutable to avoid entailing some sort of ontological subordination obtaining between the Son and Spirit to the Father. On classical understandings of immutability, and thus atemporality, God experiences no change whatsoever, be that change intrinsic or extrinsic. According to the DCEN, there is a state of affairs in which God exists without the universe, and there exists a state of affairs in which God exists with the universe, entailing – at minimum that God extrinsically changes. As a result, the CDEP and the DCEN are inconsistent with one another and cannot both be affirmed within the same coherent theological system. One of the two, or both, should be rejected. The study evaluates and interprets a new discovery of fragments of a triangular votive tablet for Jupiter Dolichenus from Újezd u Rosic, District of Brno-Land (Moravia, Czech Republic) and places it in the context of Central European barbaricum and the Roman Middle Danube region. The fragments of the votive tablet from Újezd u Rosic testify, due to their individual appearance in the landscape, more to the ritual behavior of the local barbarian population than to the loss of an object. The presence of the votive tablet outside the Roman border can hypothetically be associated with the events of the Marcomannic Wars or with the period of unrest between the Germanic tribes and Roman power under the late Severans. The present study examines the relationship of the barbarians to the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus based on the discovery of fragments of a triangular dedicatory plaque in Újezd u Rosic, Czech Republic. The fragments show relief decoration with vegetative and zoomorphic motifs as well as a coating with white metal. The finds are the first of their kind in the Czech Republic and differ from finds in Slovakia for which no origin data is available. The elemental composition of the copper alloy of the plaque as well as the characteristics of its decoration and coating are analyzed. The fragments are kept in the South Moravian Museum in Znojmo. The article describes the decorative fields of triangular plaques, which were probably used as military standards. The plaques were likely carried in processions to worship a deity and could have been valuable dedicatory gifts. They are divided into three main fields: atmospheric part (sun and moon), deities, and terrestrial part (Castores). The plaques also contain representations of male figures in military attire, likely representing the Dolichenian canon. The plaques were decorated using a special technique typical of the Göldenitz group and dated to the late 2nd to early 3rd century. The exact dating of the finds from Újezd u Rosic is difficult, but they could date from the 2nd or 3rd century. The Burg-Kumpfmühl treasure (Fig. 7,2-4) dates from the 3rd century and was discovered during the Marcomannic Wars in 170/172 AD. The treasure trove contains a bowl from the Weissenburg treasure, which is dated to the 230s or the mid-3rd century. The popular decorative motifs are also found on other parts of Roman armor dating to the end of the 2nd century and the 3rd century. The treasure trove could date from the second half of the 2nd century to the beginning of the 3rd century. The chemical analysis of the treasure trove shows that it consists of a thin sheet of metal coated with an alloy of copper, zinc, and tin. The treasure trove was likely made through hammering and chasing. The cult of Jupiter Dolichenus spread mainly through soldiers, traders, and officials connected to the military and provincial administration. The article deals with the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus in the Middle Danube region and in Central European barbaricum. Although the relationship between religion and football has gained considerable interest during the last twenty years, scant attention has been paid to the relationship between pilgrimage and football. This paper seeks to advance the study of this relationship through an exploration of collective memory about football disasters that throws fresh light on central themes within pilgrimage studies—pilgrimage as both a journey to a sacred place and the performance of diverse rituals at such places. The paper explores, in particular, the ways in which three different tragedies involving English football clubs have been commemorated through journeys to and ritual performance at places seen as sacred to those involved in commemoration—football stadiums and urban spaces, and cathedrals and pilgrimage shrines in England, Germany and Italy. Through this analysis, we seek to show how the commemoration of football disaster is linked to pilgrimage as a process where people seek healing and reconciliation through the public performance of rituals that link the local to the global. Culture and customs are habbits that have prevailed between generation in a society whose existence function as a guideline for thinking and acting in that society. The Gayo community who live in Banda Aceh combines the culture and costums of Gayo marriage with the costoms and culture of Coastal Aceh, so it is necessaary to study how its existence continus today. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of the Gayo marriage customs held in Banda Aceh, identify the stages or processions of the Gayo marriage ceremony, and determine the influence of other cultures on Gayo marriage customs in Banda Aceh. The subjects in this study amounted to 4 people consisting of 3 people who carried out the marriage procession and 1 Gayo traditional leader. The results showed that the stages of the Gayo traditional wedding ceremony procession in Banda Aceh consisted of: the process of pre-wedding activities consisting of 4 parts: kusik, sisu, pakok, and paden; wedding preparations are divided into six parts: risk, resek, rise, kono, kite and teniron; the implementation of the marriage is divided into eight parts; studying, giving up, bejege, mah bai, beru, ukum deliberation, dalem ceremony and reckoning mas. The ceremony after the wedding consists of 2 parts, mah beru and mah kero. Of all these stages, there are several stages that accompany the Aceh Pesisir wedding customs such as the night of berinai, peusijuk, exchange of batil (betel places), eating besan on the day of the reception (eating with the bride's family), headdresses and aisle colors which tend to be bright colors. The bride and groom have held a traditional Gayo wedding ceremony in Banda Aceh and this happened because of the influence of the culture of the residents with various tribes living in one area. One of the major paradoxes embedded in religion is the complex dynamics between enchantment and disenchantment. This article takes a critical look at the theoretical implications of the political dynamics of enchantment by examining its stages in depth. We use the term 'enchanted moments of place' to challenge the use of the term 'enchanted' as a static historical or historiographical designation. It takes long-term ethnographic work at a recently emerging pilgrimage site in the north of Israel/Palestine commonly known as the Shrine of Mariam Bawardy, as an empirical point of departure to explore the dynamics of enchantment. We suggest an anthropological theory of enchantment that embraces an analysis of the ways time/place intermingles religious and everyday grassroots political dynamics. This perspective sheds light on the creation of sacred place during moments of renewed creativity, the reformulation of indigenous identities, the process of reinvented rituals, and the restoration and staging of material objects and place. Uncovering these moments can clarify the ways sacred places are politically voiced and spatialized by pilgrims, and appropriated by visitors and religious agents. Our analysis shows that these 'enchanted moments', places are more fragile and susceptible to changes caused by macro- and micro- political shifts. Enchanted moments are more sensitive to local decision-making processes, creativity, contingencies and rivalry among native agents and their aspirations for place and territoriality. This article deals with individuals moving in procession in real and artificial societies. A procession is a minimal form of society in which individual behavior is to go in a given direction and the organization is structured by the knowledge of the one ahead. This simple form of grouping is common in the living world, and, among humans, procession is a very circumscribed social activity whose origins are certainly very remote. This type of organization falls under microsociology, where the focus is on the study of direct interactions between individuals within small groups. In this article, we focus on the particular case of pine tree processionary caterpillars (Thaumetopoea pityocampa). In the first part, we propose a formal definition of the concept of procession and compare field experiments conducted by entomologists with agent-based simulations to study real caterpillars' processionaries as they are. In the second part, we explore the life of caterpillars as they could be. First, by extending the model beyond reality, we can explain why real processionary caterpillars behave as they do. Then we report on field experiments on the behavior of real caterpillars artificially forced to follow a circular procession; these experiments confirm that each caterpillar can either be the leader of the procession or follow the one in front of it. In the third part, by allowing variations in the speed of movement on an artificial circular procession, computational simulations allow us to observe the emergence of unexpected mobile spatial structures built from regular polygonal shapes where chaotic movements and well-ordered forms are intimately linked. Shireen Abu Akleh was a prominent Al-Jazeera Palestinian journalist who was killed by the Israeli on 11 May 2022 while she was wearing a blue press vest and covering an army raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli occupied West Bank. The funeral procession of Shireen Abu Akleh in Jerusalem in May 2022 saw Israeli police forcefully confiscating Palestinian flags. This act raises questions about the symbolism and implications of raising or removing flags. The following article explores the semiotic use of the Palestinian flag in Palestinian literature in Israel. I discuss the significance of the Palestinian flag in the narrative spaces created by Palestinians in Israel by examining various literary works, and the identity discourse presented by such works through the flag and its symbolic ability to deconstruct Israeli policy. John Greville Agard Pocock, a renowned historian, passed away in 2023 at the age of 99. He was known for his contributions to political theory, history, historiography, and the history of political thinking. Pocock's work has been translated into multiple languages and he is considered one of New Zealand's greatest historians. His reputation is based on his masterpieces, including "The Ancient Constitution and the Feudal Law," "The Machiavellian Moment," and a six-volume study of Edward Gibbon's "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire." Pocock's writings were complex and required concentration, making him more of a historian's historian rather than a popular historian. Despite spending most of his life overseas, Pocock maintained a connection to New Zealand through his family and academic achievements. The Hijas de María, a global Catholic laywomen's organization, were active in Puerto Rico from the end of Spanish rule through North American rule. Their organizational structure and their pieties buttressed the Church's few pastors and, after the North American invasion, its new hierarchy. In the space that the institutional Church could not fill, the Hijas' devotions provided the laity with new, feminized paths for holiness. The devotional life of the Hijas de María developed within new global currents in the Church, including increasing Roman influence and a greater focus on children and their potential sanctity. This is also a story of how Puerto Rican Catholic women met modernity and its secular influences and claimed the island for their own and the interests of religion and the Church. This article discusses a sandstone relief in the collections of the Manchester Museum (inv. no. 3507) that has, since it arrived in the collection, been described as depicting Syrian soldiers and originating from the mortuary temple of Merenptah at Qurna. This reinterpretation of the piece instead suggests that it depicts Libyan warriors, not Syrians, most likely shown as part of a royal procession. The piece is dated on stylistic grounds to early in the reign of Akhenaten, and a hypothesis is proposed that it was originally part of the decorative program of an uncompleted temple structure begun by Akhenaten on what would later become the grounds of the Ramesseum. This paper aims to discover and describe cultural imagery in mowindahako ritual utterances (custom settlement) in the Tolaki Mekongga community of Southeast Sulawesi. The approach used in this study was a qualitative approach, where the data and data sources were in the form of oral data spoken by traditional interpreters/traditional figures in traditional processions. The techniques used were observation, recording, notes, interviews and documentation techniques. Meanwhile, the theory used was the Cultural Linguistics theory. This theory examines the comparative relationship between language structure and societal culture. The results of this study indicated that in mowindahako ritual, various cultural imageries were found, namely: (1) imageries of beauty, (2) imageries of unity and togetherness, (3) imageries of respect/politeness, (4) imageries of deliberation, and (5) imageries of loyalty and obedience. This study offers a fresh explanation for the characterisation of the women in Luke 23.27 as mourning. It argues that the uniquely Lukan material of women mourning on the walk to Calvary subtly fashions that walk into a funeral procession. The phrase μὴ κλαίɛτɛ in the following verse, Luke 23.28, recalls accounts of Jesus bringing the dead to life earlier in the Gospel, thereby evoking the concept of resurrection. Luke 23.27-8 works in conjunction with material later in Chapter 23 about the ritual preparation of Jesus' body, to portray funerary ritual for Jesus conducted in reverse (the funeral procession precedes rather than follows the preparation of the body). This inverted order of funeral allusions adds extra resonance to the endpoint of the Gospel, casting it as the logical culmination of a reverse funeral—the resurrection of Jesus from death to life. The interpretation in this paper highlights one way that lived ritual experiences among the Gospel's readers, in this case, the paradigm of funeral ritual, informed the narrative technique in the Gospel of Luke, complementing other well-recognised uses of Greco-Roman rhetorical devices and literary themes. Summary: Pomponius, Digest 41,7,5 pr., presents many difficulties. It holds, inter alia , that if the possessor of a thing abandoned by its owner, did not have that thing in bonis , the person who bought it from him, knowing that it had been abandoned, will usucapt it. But this seems to conflict with § 1, asserting that the acquirer of an abandoned thing becomes its dominus at once, without usucapio. Bonfante saw that the principium concerns only res mancipi and § 1 only res nec mancipi. Vacca did not agree, but subscribed to part of Bonfante's interpretation. Both Bonfante and Vacca, however, introduced an element not mentioned by Pomponius: that the selling possessor ignored that the thing had been abandoned by its owner and, instead, thought the thing was res aliena. Ankum rejected that introduction and gave an interpretation (and reconstruction) of the fragment without the contested element. It is argued that Ankum's interpretation should prevail. In El-Salamuni tombs of the Greaco-Roman period, the judgment court was a traditional scene, the deceased were often led by various gods, who introduced him to Osiris, or Sokar-Osiris. The article studies samples of the scenes show leading the deceased by a deity either in the court of the judgment, or in the processions, and invented the various deities who act this funerary role. Remarkably, procession-scenes of various male or female deities present offerings to Osiris or Sokar-Osiris is also a characteristic representation in these tombs. At the rear of these processions, the deceased was always following a human deity, holding his hand in order to introduce him to Osiris. The paper recognizes for the various gods who guide the deceased to the court, as well as tries to investigate and answer for the character of the usual and the unknown deity who leads him in these unpublished processions' scenes. Building on an insight by Kenneth Dover, this paper proposes a comparative reading of the finale of Aeschylus’ Eumenides and that of Aristophanes’ Frogs: in both texts, a torch-lit procession accompanies a character (the Semnai in the tragedy, Aeschylus in the comedy) who must ensure the well-being of the city. In this performative, structural, dramaturgical and thematic similarity, we find Aristophanes’ intention to revive not only Aeschylus as a character, but also Aeschylus as a playwright, espousing a qualifying point of his ideology, the call for the city harmony. Aquí se aborda el desarrollo de las intervenciones sobre pinturas murales en Teotihuacán y las estrategias aplicadas a nuevos hallazgos, como el realizado entre 2013 y 2015 en el Conjunto de Los Jaguares, perteneciente al Complejo Arquitectónico Quetzalpapálotl y situado en la parte norte de la monumental ciudad prehispánica. ENGLISH: This paper addresses the development of interventions on mural paintings in Teotihuacan and the strategies applied to new findings, such as the one we carried out between 2013 and 2015 at the Complex of the Jaguars, belonging to the Quetzalpapalotl Architectural Complex and located in the northern area of this monumental pre-Hispanic city.
