Aesthetic form is a figure moving through a rain storm, an image perhaps from Susanne Langer, one illuminatingly apposite to Theodor W. Adorno's concept of form, drawn from the idea of determinate negation—though Adorno never would have provided so open-handed an image. But Langer and Adorno's thinking in any case derives ensemble from what is a secret to no one who has ever thought about it, as is easily documented in a pinch by thousands of years of Neoplatonists. And if that one insight is commonly given with or without philosophical qualification, the problem of the perception, presentation, and comprehension of that movement—which is anything but a fact, except in the etymological sense of being a deed, and may not be there to be seen at all—its critical discernment, hardly amounting to yea or nay, inevitably runs up against the puzzle that it can neither be imitated or simply discussed. Though without an element of each, and not as if they might just be stirred together, what is at stake is failed. But whatever the difficulties involved, and they are necessarily insuperable, what is first of all important, so far as this commentary on Samuel Beckett's What Where is concerned, is that Beckett himself found this, his last work for the theater, on stage a failure. All the same, the sense in which this work is Beckett's Tempest is the reason for this close commentary of the work's stage script. The intention here, then, is the reverse of Adorno's essay on Beethoven's Missa solemnis , which was a labor in the disillusionment of a reputed masterpiece (Alienated Masterpiece). It should be noted, incidentally, that the discussion of the Westminster Chimes, which here figures centrally, is not a claim to establish the work's origins but an aspect of that problem of presentation, already mentioned. The contemporary situation within the realm of ethical theories is quite complicated. Were it not enough that many classical ethical theories are evolving into the new modern forms (such as virtue or discourse ethics), new types of ethical theories are arising, as well. The main aim of the paper is to introduce this issue of ethical theories which are known under the term hybrid ethical theories. A secondary aim of the paper is to describe and characterize the contemporary ethical theory of ethics of social consequences, and look for the answer whether it can be an example of this type of theory. To achieve the scope, the paper begins with a short introduction into the issue of contemporary consequentialism, followed by a presentation of the concept of hybrid ethical theories and its examples. Later the variability of consequentialism and ethics of social consequences are presented. The normative basis of this theory is subsequently analysed and explored in the context of hybrid ethical theories. Biesta states at the beginning of his intervention that he will speak "as an educationalist," outside not only of "philosophical work with children" but "outside of philosophy." What are the implications of these assumptions in terms of "what is philosophy?" and "what is education?" Can we really speak about "philosophical work with children" outside philosophy? What are the consequences of taking this position? From this initial questioning, in this response some other questions are offered to Biesta's presentation: is philosophical work with children about asking better questions or asking questions better, as he states in his presentation? Finally, risks of philosophy for children as presented by Biesta are examined: a) of being reduced to critical thinking, i.e., "to keeping a clear head"; b) that, even extended to creative and caring thinking, it could "stay in the head" and "not touch the soul"; c) that through the building of communities of inquiry in the classroom, we establish a kind of artificial setting where "we end up living in an idea about the world rather than the world". The idea that we can understand key aspects of the metaphysics of consciousness by understanding conscious states as having a presentational character plays an essential role in the phenomenological tradition beginning with Brentano and Husserl. In this paper, the author explores some potential consequences of this connection for contemporary discussions of the ontology of consciousness in the world. Drawing on Hintikka's analysis of epistemic modality, the author argues that the essential presentational character of consciousness can be seen as accounting for the familiar failure of substitutivity of identicals in intensional contexts of conscious presentation and further provides for an ontology of conscious presentation that avoids metaphysically problematic commitments to "special" intentional objects. The author next considers how the irreducibility of intensional contexts, if grounded in the presentational character of consciousness, also may provide for a kind of irreducibility of the "first-person" perspective to third-person or objective description across possible worlds. Finally, drawing on Chalmers' "two-dimensionalist" semantic framework, the author argues that attention to the presentational aspect of consciousness as thus understood, while it provides significant motivation for the existence of the "hard problem" of the irreducibility of consciousness to physical and structural description, is nevertheless consistent with a globally monist, rather than dualist, ontology. In general, the difficulty of calculation questions seems to depend mainly on the complexity of the calculation formula and its solution. However, written tests have confirmed that presentations of calculation questions can affect the number of correct responses, even when the solutions use the same calculation formula. Against this background, we have developed a question training system that offers calculation questions based on the relationship between the presentations of the questions and their difficulty. The ethics of research representation are rarely discussed. Yet representation can have a significant impact on research participants and audiences. This paper draws on some of the limited body of accounts of ethical challenges experienced in representing others in qualitative research. These accounts make clear that researchers often have to choose between ‘competing goods’ when representing others, such as participant control over what is presented and how, researchers’ ‘interpretive authority’, and how to represent participants’ speech. These decisions frequently involve researchers choosing between ‘literal’ (empirical, evidence-based) and ‘real’ (authentic, experiential) truths. To resolve these dilemmas, some researchers are turning to creative methods of representation, such as poems, songs, plays and dance. Like all forms of representation, these methods require compromise: in particular, some detail, depth, or location may be sacrificed in return for accessible engagement with participants and wider audiences. Conversely, traditional methods of presentation may sacrifice some scope for engagement and accessibility in return for greater detail and depth. We argue that such sacrifices are a necessary component of all forms of qualitative representation and consequently require a reflexive approach to choices about representation. Extending Faller (2002) , we analyze clauses with evidential marking as presenting, but not asserting, a proposition p . Crucial to this analysis is the distinction between common ground and origo ground. The common ground regulates p 's to which interlocutors have made a commitment and is subject to the logic of contradiction: p and not - p cannot hold at the same time. The origo ground regulates p 's that depend on a perspective-holder's experience and is subject to the logic of faultless disagreement: p and not - p can hold concurrently, as long as they live in two distinct origo gounds. This has two consequences. First, languages differ in default illocutionary force: assertion versus presentation. The current study explored the interaction of verbal ability and presentation order on readers' attitude formation when presented with two-sided arguments. Participants read arguments for and against compulsory voting and genetic engineering, and attitudes were assessed before and after reading the passages. Participants' verbal ability was measured, combining vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension skill. Results suggested that low verbal-ability participants were more persuaded by the most recent set of arguments whereas high verbal-ability participants formed attitudes independent of presentation order. Contrary to previous literature, individual differences in the personality trait need for cognition did not interact with presentation order. The matter of presentation and re-presentation has been crucial for the entire legacy of Western philosophy in general and to traditional aesthetics in particular. This paper uses a documentary about the 2001 anti-G8 protests in Genoa to illustrate a number of theoretical questions raised by presentation and re-presentation. I will demonstrate that presentation is always a matter of (involuntary) traces or imprints of a certain movement, which must be opposed to re-presentations, inasmuch as the latter can be seen as a will to presence, as a will to capture and re-iterate presence for various artistic, ideological or scientific purposes. It's often said that relational view of experience can't provide an explanation of mode of presentation phenomena: the idea is that if experience is characterized merely as a relation to an object, then we can't make sense of the idea that one and the same object can be given in perception in many different ways. I show that we can address this problem by looking at the causal structure in relational experience. Experience of an object is caused by experience of particular properties it has, such as its color and location, and experience of the object is in turn a cause of experience of its properties as characteristics of that object. We can explain mode of presentation phenomena as a matter of there being different sets of properties that can cause perception of one and the same object. I discuss how experiments in vision science and computational models of vision can underwrite this way of finding the causal structure in experience, relationally conceived. I look at an alternative, internalist approach to mode of presentation phenomena, in terms of 'mental paint', and suggest that the internalist approach is simply incoherent. Finally, I point out that we have mode of presentation phenomena for the spatial aspects of vision, such as perception of spatial relations and spatial location, but that these phenomena resist analysis in any of the terms proposed so far. In this article, I analyze how aspectual choice contributes to the presentation of Herodotus' narrative. I argue that the choice for the imperfect versus the aorist tense for foregrounded events brings about a ‘perspectival effect' (de Jong van den Berg 2000): while the aorist conveys an ‘external' perspective, the imperfect suggests an ‘internal' perspective of a character witnessing the events. I show that such an internal perspective is particularly often adopted at dramatic moments (e.g. battle-scenes, natural disasters, human suffering), thus supporting the thematics of the story. This ‘interpersonal' dimension of aspectual choice is framed within a larger aspectual model, which furthermore recognizes an ‘ideational' and a ‘textual' dimension. This article provides a critical analysis of the situationist challenge against Aristotelian moral psychology. It first outlines the details and results from four paradigmatic studies in psychology that situationists have heavily drawn upon in their critique of the Aristotelian conception of virtuous characteristics, including studies conducted by Hartshorne and May (, Darley and Batson (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 27:100-108, ), Isen and Levin (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 21:384-388, ), and Milgram (Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology 67:371-378, ). It then presents ten problems with the way situationists have used these studies to challenge Aristotelian moral psychology. After challenging the situationists on these grounds, the article then proceeds to challenge the situationist presentation of the Aristotelian conception, showing that situationists have provided an oversimplified caricature of it that goes against the grain of much Aristotelian text. In evaluating the situationist challenge against the actual results from empirical research as well as primary Aristotelian text, it will be shown that the situationist debate has advanced both an extreme, untenable view about the nature of characteristics and situations, as well as an inaccurate presentation of the Aristotelian view. Most philosophers agree that an argument's presentation is relevant to its philosophical merit. This paper explains why David Hume considered presentation philosophically important. On Hume's epistemology, presentation is closely connected with two principal aims of philosophical arguments: persuasion and epistemic justification. Th e text shows aporetical tension between historicity and temporality of the «now» of the individual. The partial solution of this problem lies in the distance between strangeness/otherness and the «now». The author uses late Husserlian phenomenology of time to confront these two perspectives: the «now» and historicity. The fi rst part of the paper is focused on meaning of the beingness as an ontological exemplification of being. The most originative presentation of time is made to prepare ontological ground of confrontation between time and historicity. According to the author examining Heidegger's temporality, it leads to uncovering an ontological distance between temporality and the most [original] «now»/the fi rst «now». There are also two kinds of historicity. The fi rst one is within temporality itself, the second one, ontologically speaking between temporality and the «now». Explanation as strangeness/otherness, Mittelpunkt, diastasis, tension, and Zwischenpunkt are various notions of the same temporal reality that is realized between the ontologically important borders. In the second part, the author discusses with diastasis as a diff erence of two kinds of the past: "the pastness" and "the fi niteness". According to the author, the sense of diastasis is the transformation of the centre of gravity from the anchored in the fl ow of consciousness «now» to the «now» understood as the actuality of the remembered.
