Aims: Many guidelines recommend increases in potassium intake. However, the relationship of dietary potassium intake with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been examined in those with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), including sodium acting antagonistically with potassium. We investigated these relationships in Japanese patients with T2DM. Materials and Methods: The investigation was part of the JDCP study, a nationwide prospective study begun in 2007. Analysed were 1477 persons with T2DM, 40–75 years of age, who completed a brief‐type, self‐administered Diet History Questionnaire at baseline. Primary outcome was a CVD event during the follow‐up median 7 years (3.9–8.1 years). Hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD were estimated by Cox regression adjusted for confounders of daily potassium intake categorized by tertiles. Tertiles of sodium intake were also analysed. Results: Mean daily potassium intake in tertiles was 1877, 2627 and 3532 mg, respectively, and significant associations were not shown between potassium intake and incidence of CVD. When HRs for CVD were stratified for potassium intake in tertiles (reference group, bottom tertile) and sodium intake (reference group, bottom tertile), potassium intake in the bottom tertile and sodium intake in the second and top tertiles were associated with significantly elevated HR for CVD (2.79 [1.02–7.63] and 3.92 [1.30–11.79], respectively). Conclusions: Low potassium intake in conjunction with high sodium intake was significantly associated with increased incident CVD in persons with T2DM. Background: Data on the relationship between potassium intake and major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with diabetes are scarce. We aim to study the association between estimated potassium intake and risk of MACE in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods: The discovery cohort consisted of 1572 participants with type 2 diabetes from a secondary hospital. The validation cohort consisted of 1430 participants with diabetes from a multicenter study (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort, CRIC). Potassium intake was estimated from potassium in spot urine using Kawasaki formula and in 24-h urine collection in two cohorts, respectively. The primary outcome was MACE defined as a composite of myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular death. Results: During a median of 8.2 years of follow-up, 341 MACE events were identified in discovery cohort. Compared to the lowest tertile, participants with potassium intake in the top tertile had 34% lower risk for MACE after adjustment for cardio-renal risk factors (adjusted hazard ratio, aHR [95% CI], 0.66 [0.49–0.89]). This inverse association was more pronounced in participants with normal or moderately elevated albuminuria as compared to those with severely elevated albuminuria (urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio > 300 mg/g, p for interaction < 0.05). In consistence, a higher potassium intake was independently associated with a lower risk of MACE in CRIC participants with diabetes and moderately elevated albuminuria (aHR 0.61 [0.42–0.90], top vs. lowest tertile). Conclusions: A high level potassium intake estimated from urine potassium excretion was independently associated with a low risk of MACE in patients with type 2 diabetes. Increasing potassium intake may be a potential effective strategy for cardiovascular risk reduction beyond controlling traditional risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Hypertension is called a silent killer because many people with hypertension but do not realize that they have it (no signs or symptoms). This study aimed to determine the characteristics of respondents and the risk factors for sodium intake, potassium, and physical activity on hypertension in the elderly. Methods: Case-control study design with age and gender matching. Nonprobability sampling technique . The number of case group samples (33 people) is the same as the control (33 people). Sodium and potassium intake data using food recall form, and physical activity data with GPAQ (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire). Data analysis with chi-square test, significant (p < 0.05). OR>1 is a risk factor. Results: The results of this study showed: that the family history of hypertension in the case group was more (54.5%) than the control (18.2%). The highest level of education in the case group was elementary school (33%) compared to the control (24.2%). Most respondents did not work in the case group (48.5%) almost as much as the control (51.5%). Most respondents did not smoke in the case group (84.8%) almost as much as the control (81.8%). Statistical test results showed that respondents with more sodium intake had a 5.46 times risk of developing hypertension compared to respondents with adequate sodium intake (p=0.003; OR = 5.46), on the other hand, the results of this study showed that potassium intake was not a risk factor for hypertension. Respondents in the low physical activity category had 5.95 times the risk of hypertension compared to respondents in the high physical activity category (p=0.004; OR=5.95). Conclusion: Sodium intake and physical activity are risk factors for hypertension. Elderly people are advised to do physical activity for 30 minutes per day to overcome hypertension. IntroductionPoor nutritious diet is a major risk element for non-communicable diseases (NCD), which are of considerable public health concern. Given the diverse dietary patterns in India, precise determination of nutrient consumption is crucial for disease management. The present study assessed the dietary intake of sodium, potassium, protein, and phosphorus among North Indians.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included healthy adults and adults with stage 2 to 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). We analysed sodium, protein, potassium and phosphorus intakes using one-time 24-h urinary excretion. Dietary intake was also analysed in subgroups based on sex, body mass index, blood pressure and abdominal obesity. We evaluated the performance of various equations available to estimate sodium intake using a spot urine sample with respect to the sodium excretion measured in a 24-h urine sample. Descriptive statistics was used along with t-test for statistical significance.ResultsA total of 404 subjects (182 adult healthy subjects and 222 adults with CKD) with a mean age of 47.01 ± 11.46 years were studied. Mean dietary intakes of sodium, salt, potassium, protein and phosphorus were 2.94 ± 1.68 g/day, 7.42 ± 4.24 g/day, 1.43 ± 0.59 g/day, 47.67 ± 14.73 g/day and 0.86 ± 0.39 g/day, respectively. There were no differences in nutrient consumption between adults who were healthy and those with CKD. Consumption of sodium, salt, protein, potassium, and phosphorus among healthy population vs. those with CKD were 2.81 ± 1.60 vs. 3.05 ± 1.73 g/day (p = 0.152), 7.08 ± 4.04 vs. 7.70 ± 4.37 g/day (p = 0.143), 47.16 ± 14.59 vs. 48.08 ± 14.86 g/day (p = 0.532), 1.38 ± 0.59 vs. 1.48 ± 0.58 g/day (p = 0.087) and 0.86 ± 0.41 vs. 0.87 ± 0.37 g/day (p = 0.738), respectively. Men had higher consumption of these nutrients than women. Compared to non-hypertensives, hypertensive subjects had higher consumption of salt (8.23 ± 4.89 vs. 6.84 ± 3.59 g/day, p = 0.002) and potassium (1.51 ± 0.63 vs. 1.38 ± 0.55 g/day, p = 0.024), however, no difference were found in protein and phosphorus intakes. In terms of performance of equations used to estimate 24-h sodium intake from spot urinary sodium concentration against the measured 24-h urinary sodium excretion, INTERSALT 2 equation exhibited the least bias [1.08 (95% CI, −5.50 to 7.66)].ConclusionThe study shows higher-than-recommended salt and lower-than-recommended potassium intake in the north Indian population compared to those recommended by guidelines. The dietary protein intake is below the recommended dietary allowance. These findings help the development of targeted policies for dietary modification to reduce the risk of the development and progression of CKD.

Abstract Objective: The objective of study was to assess 24-h urinary Na and K excretion and estimate the average salt and K intakes in a nationally representative sample of the adult population of Slovenia. Design: A nationally representative cross-sectional study was conducted in four stages between September and November 2022: study questionnaire, physical measurements, 24-h urine collection and laboratory analysis. Setting: Slovenia. Participants: We invited 2000 adult, non-institutionalised inhabitants of Slovenia, aged between 25 and 64 years. A stratified two-staged sample was selected from this population by the Statistical Office of Slovenia, using sampling from the Central Population Register. According to the WHO methodology, additional eligibility criteria were screened before participating. A total of 518 individuals participated in all four stages of the study, resulting in a response rate of 30 %. Results: The mean 24-h urinary Na excretion was 168 mmol/d (95 % CI 156, 180), which corresponds to a mean estimated intake of 10·3 g salt/d (95 % CI 9·6, 11·1). Mean 24-h urinary K excretion was 65·4 mmol/d (95 % CI 63·2, 67·5), and the estimated mean K intake was 2·93 g/d (95 % CI 2·84, 3·03). There were statistically significant differences in mean intakes between males and females. The mean sodium-to-potassium ratio was 2·7 (95 % CI 2·5, 2·8). Conclusions: The study results highlighted that the salt intake in the adult population of Slovenia remains much higher than recommended by the WHO, and K intakes are insufficient, as most participants did not meet the recommendations.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases which is a prime contributor to deaths worldwide. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between potassium intake and physical activity with blood pressure in hypertensive patients. A total of 47 samples participated in this analytical cross-sectional study and provided data about potassium intake and physical activity through interviews using Semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ). Blood pressure data were obtained from medical records. Data were analyzed with Rank Spearman correlation test. The results showed 4 (8.5%) subjects had sufficient potassium intake, while for the remaining 91.5% didn’t meet their dietary potassium requirements. Most of the participants (87.2%) had low physical activity levels. No correlation was found between potassium intake and systolic blood pressure (p=0.261) while a statistically significant relationship with diastolic blood pressure (p=0.026). Physical activity levels showed significant correlation with both systolic (p=0.047) and diastolic (p=-0.022). In conclusion, no association was found between potassium intake and systolic blood pressure but the opposite was observed for diastolic blood pressure. Physical activity levels showed significant correlations with systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

BackgroundMigraine is a prevalent neurovascular headache disorder. The link between dietary potassium and blood pressure has been established. We sought to delineate the relationship between dietary potassium intake and the prevalence of migraines.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999–2004, comprising 10,254 participants aged ≥20 years. Participants who reported severe headaches or migraine in the self-report questionnaire were identified as migraineurs. A 24-h dietary recall methodology was used to assess dietary potassium intake. Multivariate regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) modeling were utilized to elucidate the relationship between dietary potassium and migraines.ResultsAmong the 10,254 participants, 20.1% were identified with migraine or severe headaches. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for migraine occurrence in the Q2 dietary potassium intake (1771–2,476 mg/d) was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.73–0.97, p = 0.021) compared to the lowest quartile (Q1, ≤ 1771 mg/d). The relationship between dietary potassium and migraine exhibited an L-shaped pattern (non-linear, p = 0.016) with an inflection at approximately 1439.3 mg/d. In the subgroup analysis, when compared to Q1, who had the lowest dietary potassium intake, the adjusted OR for Q2 in females, those in the medium-high household income group, and with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 were as follows: (OR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.69–0.98), (OR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.66–0.95), and (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.66–0.93), respectively. No significant interaction was observed across groups after adjusting for all possible covariates.ConclusionThe relationship between dietary potassium intake and migraine prevalence among US adults appears to follow an L-shaped curve.

Background: Uncertainty remains about the association of potassium (K) intake with depression and anxiety status. We explored their relationship using 24‐h urinary K, reflecting K intake, in general population. Methods: We collected 24‐h urine and performed self‐rating depression and anxiety scales (SDS, SAS) cross‐sectionally in adults selected by random sampling in China. SDS and SAS standard score ≥50 defined depression and anxiety status. Participants were divided into three groups (T1, T2, and T3) by 24‐h urinary K tertile. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Sensitivity analysis was performed by excluding anti‐hypertensive agent takers. Results: 546 participants comprised current analytical sample. First, T1 and T2 groups showed higher SDS scores (40.0 vs 40.0 vs 36.0, p =.001), prevalence (19.8 vs 15.9 vs 7.1%, p =.002), whereas increased adjusted odds for depression status only in T1 group (OR = 2.71, p =.017), compared with T3 group. Second, T1 and T2 groups showed higher SAS scores (38.0 vs 40 vs 35.0, p <.001) and prevalence (14.8 vs 21.4 vs 8.8%, p =.003), whereas increased adjusted odds for anxiety status only in T2 group (OR = 2.07, p =.042), compared with T3 groups. Third, T1 and T2 groups showed higher prevalence (10.4% vs 11.5% vs 2.7%, p =.004) and adjusted odds (OR = 3.71, p =.013; OR = 3.66, p =.014) for co‐existent anxiety and depression status, compared with T3 group. Most results remained consistent in sensitivity analysis. Conclusions: Lower K intake is implicated in presence of anxiety and depression status in general population; this may provide basis for programs to increase K intake and prevent disease. (1) Background: Endothelial dysfunction is an early predictor of cardiovascular diseases. Although a large body of evidence shows an inverse association between potassium intake and cardiovascular risk, the studies on endothelial function provided contrasting results. Thus, we carried out a systematic review and a meta-analysis of the available intervention studies of the potassium supplementation on endothelial function. (2) Methods: A systematic search of the online databases available (up to December 2022) was conducted including the intervention trials that reported flow-mediated dilation (FMD) changes—a non-invasive method of assessing endothelial function—after two different potassium intake regimens. For each study, the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals were pooled using a random effect model. (3) Results: Five studies met the pre-defined inclusion criteria and provided eight cohorts with 332 participants. In the pooled analysis, potassium supplementation was associated with a significant increase in FMD (MD: 0.74%), with a higher effect for a urinary potassium excretion higher than 90 mmol/day. There was a moderate heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 59%), explained by the different amount of potassium supplementation. (4) Conclusions: The results of our meta-analysis indicate that dietary potassium supplement improves endothelial function. This effect is directly associated with the amount of potassium supplement. This study aimed to analyze the effect of metformin and diet on glycemic control and its association with the Met408Val polymorphism in patients with T2D from western Mexico.Patients and Methods: A total of 240 T2D adult patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Anti-hyperglycemic therapy, dietary intake, body composition and glycemic profile were recorded and the determination of genotypes of SLC22A1/OCT1 gene (rs628031) was performed using an allelic discrimination assay.Results: The type of metformin therapy was 47% monotherapy, 45% dual therapy (metformin+glibenclamide or metformin+insulin) and 8% triple therapy (metformin+glibenclamide+insulin). Individuals with metformin monotherapy had a higher glycemic control frequency (%HbA1c < 7.0) compared with the dual and triple treatment schemes (77% vs 35% and 15%, respectively; p< 0.001). Interestingly, a high potassium intake was documented in the three anti-hyperglycemic therapies and a lower intake of micronutrients, including calcium, magnesium, and zinc. An interaction was found between calcium intake and carriers of the risk allele A (408Val) with %HbA1c (P interaction=0.028), and potassium intake with the TyG index (P interaction=0.027). In addition, there was a positive correlation between calcium intake and %HbA1c (r=0.682; p=0.010), and potassium intake vs TyG index (r=0.593; p=0.033) in risk allele A (408Val) carriers with metformin monotherapy. Genotype frequencies were GG homozygotes (76.6%), GA heterozygotes (21.5%) and AA homozygotes (1.9%). The allele frequency was 87.4% for the ancestral allele G and 12.6% for the risk allele A.Conclusion: These findings suggest a differing effect of metformin on glycemic control regarding calcium and potassium intake and the Met408Val SLC22A1/OCT1 gene polymorphism in T2D patients.Keywords: nutrigenetic, pharmacogenetic, SLC22A1/OCT1 gene, gene-nutrient interactions, calcium intake, potassium intake

(1) Background: Dietary potassium intake is positively associated with reduction of cardiovascular risk. Several data are available on the relationship between dietary potassium intake, diabetes risk and glucose metabolism, but with inconsistent results. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of the prospective studies that explored the effect of dietary potassium intake on the risk of diabetes to overcome these limitations. (2) Methods: A random-effects dose–response meta-analysis was carried out for prospective studies. A potential non-linear relation was investigated using restricted cubic splines. (3) Results: A total of seven prospective studies met the inclusion criteria. Dose–response analysis detected a non-linear relationship between dietary potassium intake and diabetes risk, with significant inverse association starting from 2900 mg/day by questionnaire and between 2000 and 5000 mg/day by urinary excretion. There was high heterogeneity among studies, but no evidence of publication bias was found. (4) Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis indicate that habitual dietary potassium consumption is associated with risk of diabetes by a non-linear dose–response relationship. The beneficial threshold found supports the campaigns in favour of an increase in dietary potassium intake to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality. Background and Hypothesis: Lower potassium intake is associated with a higher risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the general population. However, there are no stated recommendations on potassium intake in the CKD population owing to limited evidence of benefits from potassium intake and concerns about the risk of hyperkalaemia. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between potassium intake and CKD progression., Methods: A total of 4314 patients aged 18 years or older in Japan were prospectively followed for 5 years using data from the Fukuoka Kidney Disease Registry study. The patients were divided into quartiles according to estimated potassium intake levels assessed by the Tanaka formula from spot urine samples. The primary outcome was CKD progression, which was defined as a composite of a 1.5-fold increase in creatinine concentrations from baseline and development of end-stage kidney disease. We evaluated the relationship between estimated potassium intake and CKD progression using Cox proportional hazards models., Results: A total of 1490 patients showed CKD progression during the follow-up with an incidence rate of 90.1/1000 person-years. Patients in the lowest estimated potassium intake quartile had higher hazard ratios for CKD progression than those in the highest quartiles in the multivariable-adjusted Cox models (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.24 [1.03-1.48]). Similarly, each 1-standard deviation decrease in estimated potassium intake as a continuous variable was associated with a higher risk of CKD progression (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.10 [1.03-1.19])., Conclusions: Lower estimated potassium intake is associated with CKD progression in patients with CKD. Background: The World Health Organization recommends a daily sodium intake of less than 2000 mg for adults; however, the Mexican population, like many others globally, consumes more sodium than this recommended amount. Excessive sodium intake is often accompanied by inadequate potassium intake. The association between knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) and actual sodium intake has yielded mixed results across various populations. In Mexico, however, salt/sodium-related KAB and its relationship with sodium and potassium intake have not been evaluated., Objective: This study primarily aims to describe salt/sodium-related KAB in a Mexican population and, secondarily, to explore the association between KAB and 24-hour urinary sodium and potassium excretion., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in an adult population from Mexico City and the surrounding metropolitan area. Self-reported KAB related to salt/sodium intake was assessed using a survey developed by the Pan American Health Organization. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and 24-hour urinary sodium and potassium excretion levels were determined. Descriptive statistics were stratified by sex and presented as means (SD) or median (25th-75th percentiles) for continuous variables, and as absolute and relative frequencies for categorical variables. The associations between KAB and sodium and potassium excretion were assessed using analysis of covariance, adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and daily energy intake as covariates, with the Šidák correction applied for multiple comparisons., Results: Overall, 232 participants were recruited (women, n=184, 79.3%). The mean urinary sodium and potassium excretion were estimated to be 2582.5 and 1493.5 mg/day, respectively. A higher proportion of men did not know the amount of sodium they consumed compared with women (12/48, 25%, vs 15/184, 8.2%, P=.01). More women reported knowing that there is a recommended amount for daily sodium intake than men (46/184, 25%, vs 10/48, 20.8%, P=.02). Additionally, more than half of men (30/48, 62.5%) reported never or rarely reading food labels, compared with women (96/184, 52.1%, P=.04). Better salt/sodium-related KAB was associated with higher adjusted mean sodium and potassium excretion. For example, mean sodium excretion was 3011.5 (95% CI 2640.1-3382.9) mg/day among participants who reported knowing the difference between salt and sodium, compared with 2592.8 (95% CI 2417.2-2768.3) mg/day in those who reported not knowing this difference (P=.049). Similarly, potassium excretion was 1864.9 (95% CI 1669.6-2060.3) mg/day for those who knew the difference, compared with 1512.5 (95% CI 1420.1-1604.8) mg/day for those who did not (P=.002). Additionally, higher urinary sodium excretion was observed among participants who reported consuming too much sodium (3216.0 mg/day, 95% CI 2867.1-3565.0 mg/day) compared with those who claimed to eat just the right amount (2584.3 mg/day, 95% CI 2384.9-2783.7 mg/day, P=.01)., Conclusions: Salt/sodium-related KAB was poor in this study sample. Moreover, KAB had a greater impact on potassium excretion than on sodium excretion, highlighting the need for more strategies to improve KAB related to salt/sodium intake. Objective: Despite adequate dialysis, the prevalence of hyperkalemia in Chinese hemodialysis (HD) patients remains elevated. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a dietary recommendation system driven by generative pretrained transformers (GPTs) in managing potassium levels in HD patients., Methods: We implemented a bespoke dietary guidance tool utilizing GPT technology. Patients undergoing HD at our center were enrolled in the study from October 2023 to November 2023. The intervention comprised of two distinct phases. Initially, patients were provided with conventional dietary education focused on potassium management in HD. Subsequently, in the second phase, they were introduced to a novel GPT-based dietary guidance tool. This artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool offered real-time insights into the potassium content of various foods and personalized dietary suggestions. The effectiveness of the AI tool was evaluated by assessing the precision of its dietary recommendations. Additionally, we compared predialysis serum potassium levels and the proportion of patients with hyperkalemia among patients before and after the implementation of the GPT-based dietary guidance system., Results: In our analysis of 324 food photographs uploaded by 88 HD patients, the GPTs system evaluated potassium content with an overall accuracy of 65%. Notably, the accuracy was higher for high-potassium foods at 85%, while it stood at 48% for low-potassium foods. Furthermore, the study examined the effect of GPT-based dietary advice on patients' serum potassium levels, revealing a significant reduction in those adhering to GPTs recommendations compared to recipients of traditional dietary guidance (4.57 ± 0.76 mmol/L vs. 4.84 ± 0.94 mmol/L, P = .004). Importantly, compared to traditional dietary education, dietary education based on the GPTs tool reduced the proportion of hyperkalemia in HD patients from 39.8% to 25% (P = .036)., Conclusion: These results underscore the promising role of AI in improving dietary management for HD patients. Nonetheless, the study also points out the need for enhanced accuracy in identifying low potassium foods. Hyperkalemia is a major concern in chronic kidney disease and in end-stage renal disease, representing a predictor of hospitalization and mortality. To prevent and treat hyperkalemia, dietary management is of great clinical interest. Currently, the growing use of plant-based diets causes an increasing concern about potassium load in renal patients. The aim of this study was to assess the bioaccessibility of potassium in vegetables, concerning all aspects of the plants (fruit, flower, root, tuber, leaf and seed) and to what extent different boiling techniques affect potassium content and bioaccessibility of plant-based foods. Bioaccessibility was evaluated by an in vitro digestion methodology, resembling human gastro-intestinal tract. Potassium content was higher in seeds and leaves, despite it not being possible to define a common "rule" according to the type of organ, namely seed, leaf or fruit. Boiling reduced potassium content in all vegetables excluding carrot, zucchini, and cauliflower; boiling starting from cold water contributed to a greater reduction of the potassium content in potato, peas, and beans. Bioaccessibility after in vitro digestion ranged from 12 (peas) to 93% (tomato) regardless of species and organs. Higher bioaccessibility was found in spinach, chicory, zucchini, tomato, kiwi, and cauliflower, and lower bioaccessibility in peas. Potassium from leaf resulted in the highest bioaccessibility after digestion; as a whole potassium bioaccessibility in the fruits and vegetables studied was 67% on average, with differences in relation to the different organs and species. Further, considering the method of boiling to reduce potassium content, these data indicate that the effective potassium load from plant-based foods may be lower than originally expected. Background: Approximately one-third of adults in Trinidad and Tobago have high blood pressure (hypertension). Excessive consumption of sodium (Na+) is a known risk factor for hypertension. Aim: We investigated Na+ and potassium (K+) intakes and their correlates in a multi-ethnic Caribbean population. Method: Volunteers completed a self-administered questionnaire comprising socio-demographic items, physical activity (PA) and a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Foods eaten were classified by level of processing using the NOVA classification system and analysed for Na+ and K+ levels using appropriate dietary analysis software. The study was approved by the University of the West Indies at Saint Augustine Ethics Committee. Results: 11,783 adults participated in the study. Approximately 83.2% of total calories, 79% of Na+ and 40% of K+ was derived from the consumption of highly processed foods. Median daily Na+ and K+ intakes were 2759 mg and 2853 mg, respectively. Na+ intakes showed significant nonlinear increases with age (p < 0.001) and body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), and non-linear decreases with educational attainment (p < 0.001). K+ intakes showed significant nonlinear decreases with age (p < 0.001) and BMI (p < 0.001), and linear increases with educational attainment (p < 0.001). Males had higher intakes of Na+ and K+ than females. Na+: K+ was lower among persons participating in moderate to high intensity PA ≥ 150 minutes/week compared to those participating in such activities < 150 minutes/week. Conclusion: Socio-demographic factors were significantly correlated with Na+ and K+ intakes among participants and must be considered in strategies aimed at achieving healthy intakes of these nutrients. Background Potassium intake has been shown to be inversely associated with blood pressure and premature mortality. Previous studies have suggested that the association between potassium intake and blood pressure is modified by obesity, but whether obesity similarly influences the association between potassium intake and mortality is unclear. Objectives We investigated whether potassium intake, reflected by 24-h urinary excretion, is associated with all-cause mortality, and explored potential effect modification by obesity. Methods We performed a prospective cohort study in community-dwelling individuals. The association between urinary potassium excretion and all-cause mortality was investigated by using multivariable Cox regression. We performed multiplicative interaction analysis and subgroup analyses according to BMI and waist circumference. Results In 8533 individuals (50% male), the mean age was 50 ± 13 y, mean urinary potassium excretion was 71 ± 21 mmol/24 h, median BMI (in kg/m2) was 25.6 (IQR: 23.1, 28.4) and mean waist circumference was 89 ± 13 cm. During median follow-up of 18.4 (IQR: 13.5, 18.8) y, 1663 participants died. Low urinary potassium excretion (first compared with third sex-specific quintile) was associated with an increased mortality risk (fully adjusted HR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.18, 1.61), P  < 0.001, irrespective of body dimensions (HR range for all body dimensions: 1.36–1.70, all P  < 0.05). High urinary potassium excretion (fifth compared with third quintile) was associated with increased mortality risk in participants with obesity (BMI ≥30; HR: 1.52; CI: 1.00, 2.30), but not in participants without obesity (BMI: <25; HR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.62, 1.26; P -interaction = 0.001). Conclusions Low potassium intake was associated with increased mortality risk in community-dwelling individuals. The article reports that Accurate assessments of potassium intake in children are important for the early prevention of CVD. Currently, there is no simple approach for accurate estimation of potassium intake in children. We aim to evaluate the accuracy of 24-h urinary potassium excretion (24UKV) estimation in children using three common equations: the Kawasaki, Tanaka and Mage formulas, in a hospital-based setting.

Aims A potassium replete diet is associated with lower blood pressure (BP) and lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Whether these associations differ between men and women and whether they depend on daily sodium intake is unknown. Methods and results An analysis was performed in 11 267 men and 13 696 women from the EPIC-Norfolk cohort. Twenty-four hour excretion of sodium and potassium, reflecting intake, was estimated from sodium and potassium concentration in spot urine samples using the Kawasaki formula. Linear and Cox regression were used to explore the association between potassium intake, systolic BP (SBP), and CVD events (defined as hospitalization or death due to CVD). After adjustment for confounders, interaction by sex was found for the association between potassium intake and SBP (P  < 0.001). In women, but not in men, the inverse slope between potassium intake and SBP was steeper in those within the highest tertile of sodium intake compared with those within the lowest tertile of sodium intake (P  < 0.001 for interaction by sodium intake). Both in men and women, higher potassium intake was associated with a lower risk of CVD events, but the hazard ratio (HR) associated with higher potassium intake was lower in women than in men [highest vs. lowest potassium intake tertile: men: HR 0.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87–1.00; women: HR 0.89, 95% CI 0.83–0.95, P  = 0.033 for interaction by sex]. Conclusion The association between potassium intake, SBP, and CVD events is sex specific. Background: Fruit and vegetable intake is commonly discouraged in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to avoid hyperkalemia. However, direct evidence in support of this widespread practice is lacking. Furthermore, the resultant restricted fiber exposure may deprive CKD patients from potential health benefits associated with the latter. Therefore, we investigated associations between dietary potassium intake, fiber intake, and serum potassium levels in pediatric CKD. Methods: This study is a longitudinal analysis of a 2-year, prospective, multi-institutional study, following children with CKD at 3-month intervals. At each visit, dietary potassium and fiber intake were assessed, using 24-h recalls and 3-day food records. On the same occasion, serum potassium concentrations were determined. Associations between dietary potassium intake, dietary fiber intake, and serum potassium concentrations were determined using linear mixed models. Results: Fifty-two CKD patients (7 transplant recipients, none on dialysis) aged 9 [4;14] years with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 49 [25;68] mL/min/1.73 m2 were included. For every g/day decrease in dietary potassium intake, the estimated mean daily fiber intake was 5.1 g lower (95% confidence interval (CI), 4.3–5.9 g/day; p < 0.001). Neither dietary potassium intake (p = 0.40) nor dietary fiber intake (p = 0.43) was associated with circulating potassium in a model adjusted for time point, eGFR, treatment with a renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system blocker, serum bicarbonate concentration, and body surface area. Conclusions: Dietary potassium and fiber intake are closely related but were not associated with circulating potassium levels in pediatric CKD. Objectives: Uncertainty remains about the association of potassium (K) intake and sleepiness. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between K excretion using 24-h urine samples and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in the general population. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we used multi-stage proportional random sampling to obtain a study sample aged ≥ 18 years from Emin, China between March and June 2019. We collected timed 24-h urine specimens and conducted EDS assessments using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire. Subjects were divided into two groups by the median of 24-h urinary potassium (24-h UK). EDS was defined as ESS score ≥ 10. Multi-variable linear regression was used to examine the association between the 24-h UK and the odds of prevalent EDS. We performed a sensitivity analysis by excluding subjects under anti-hypertensive treatment and those with sleep disordered breathing by the NoSAS scale. Results: A total of 470 participants with complete 24-h urine samples and ESS data (62% women, mean age 49.6 years, mean ESS score of 9.0 ± 5.2) were enrolled. The mean ESS score was significantly lower in the upper half of 24-h UK group than in the lower half (9.5 ± 5.3 vs 8.5 ± 5.1, P = 0.044), and accordingly, prevalent EDS was significantly greater in the lower half than in the higher half (49% vs 40%, P = 0.039). In further improving the propensity matching score, the results remained consistent with the overall results. In multiple linear regression, 24-h UK was negatively correlated with ESS score (β = − 0.180 (− 0.276, − 0.085), < 0.001). Sensitivity analysis demonstrated augmented results in those without anti-hypertensive treatment. Insufficient fruit and vegetable intake (FVI) and low potassium intake are associated with many non-communicable diseases, but the association with early renal damage in children is uncertain. We aimed to identify the associations of early renal damage with insufficient FVI and daily potassium intake in a general pediatric population. We conducted four waves of urine assays based on our child cohort (PROC) study from October 2018 to November 2019 in Beijing, China. We investigated FVI and other lifestyle status via questionnaire surveys and measured urinary potassium, β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), and microalbumin (MA) excretion to assess daily potassium intake and renal damage among 1914 primary school children. The prevalence of insufficient FVI (<4/d) was 48.6% (95% CI: 46.4%, 50.9%) and the estimated potassium intake at baseline was 1.63 ± 0.48 g/d. Short sleep duration, long screen time, lower estimated potassium intake, higher β2-MG and MA excretion were significantly more frequent in the insufficient FVI group. We generated linear mixed effects models and observed the bivariate associations of urinary β2-MG and MA excretion with insufficient FVI (β = 0.012, 95% CI: 0.005, 0.020; β = 0.717, 95% CI: 0.075, 1.359), and estimated potassium intake (β = −0.042, 95% CI: −0.052, −0.033; β = −1.778, 95% CI: −2.600, −0.956), respectively; after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, SBP, sleep duration, screen time and physical activity. In multivariate models, we observed that urinary β2-MG excretion increased with insufficient FVI (β = 0.011, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.018) and insufficient potassium intake (<1.5 g/d) (β = 0.031, 95% CI: 0.023, 0.038); and urinary MA excretion increased with insufficient FVI (β = 0.658, 95% CI: 0.017, 1.299) and insufficient potassium intake (β = 1.185, 95% CI: 0.492, 1.878). We visualized different quartiles of potassium intake showing different renal damage with insufficient FVI for interpretation and validation of the findings. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Hypertension is an important public health problem. Overweight and high salt intake are risk factors for its development. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between salt taste sensitivity threshold (STST) and blood pressure (BP) in healthy adults. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted in a private institution. METHODS: 104 healthy adults (aged 18-59 years) were evaluated. Sociodemographic, clinical and dietary data were collected. Nutritional status and BP were assessed using body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). STST was assessed using graded saline solutions with sodium chloride concentrations ranging from 0.228 to 58.44 g/l. Identification of salty taste in solutions ≥ 3.652 g/l was used as the cutoff point for high STST. RESULTS: Participants with high STST presented higher daily average intakes for energy (2017.4 ± 641.5 versus 1650.5 ± 357.7 kcal/day; P = 0.01) and sodium (3070.2 ± 1195.1 versus 2435.2 ± 963.6 mg/day; P = 0.01) and higher BMI (P = 0.008) and WC (P = 0.002). After adjustment for age, sex, sodium and potassium intake, WC and family history of hypertension, the averages for SBP and DBP in subjects with high STST were higher than in those with normal STST (SBP: 138.2 ± 1.7 versus 119.7 ± 0.9 mmHg; P < 0.001; DBP: 81.2 ± 1.9 versus 75.1 ± 1.0 mmHg; P = 0.008). CONCLUSION: High STST was associated with elevated blood pressure in healthy adults, regardless of other risk factors for hypertension.

According to WHO, the highest prevalence of hypertension by region is Africa, which is 27 percent, while Southeast Asia is the third highest, with 25 percent of the total population. High sodium intake and low potassium intake are risk factors that affect blood pressure. This research aims to determine the association between sodium and potassium intake with the incidence of hypertension through a meta-analysis study. The research design uses a systematic review with meta-analysis. The review method uses the PRISMA concept. Search articles with 3 databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct, and for statistical tests using the RevMan application. The articles included in the meta-analysis were 15 articles (14 articles on the sodium intake variable and 10 articles on the potassium intake variable). The analysis results showed no association between sodium intake and hypertension in the cohort design (p = 0.14) and case-control design (p = 0.43). Meanwhile, the cross-sectional design showed an association between sodium intake and the incidence of hypertension with a p-value = 0.01. The subgroup analysis results also showed no association between potassium intake and the incidence of hypertension in both the cohort (p = 0.32) and cross-sectional (p = 0.06) studies. Background Angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs) lower blood pressure (BP) and proteinuria and reduce renal disease progression in many—but not all—patients. Reduction of dietary sodium intake improves these effects of ARBs. Dietary potassium intake affects BP and proteinuria. We set out to address the effect of potassium intake on BP and proteinuria response to losartan in non-diabetic proteinuric chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods We performed a post hoc analysis of a placebo-controlled interventional cross-over study in 33 non-diabetic proteinuric patients (baseline mean arterial pressure and proteinuria: 105 mmHg and 3.8 g/day, respectively). Patients were treated for 6 weeks with placebo, losartan and losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), combined with a habitual (∼200 mmol/day) and low-sodium (LS) diet (<100 mmol/day), in randomized order. To analyse the effects of potassium intake, we categorized patients based on median split of 24-h urinary potassium excretion, reflecting potassium intake. Results Mean potassium intake was stable during all six treatment periods. Losartan and losartan/HCT lowered BP and proteinuria in all treatment groups. Patients with high potassium intake showed no difference in the BP effects compared with patients with low potassium intake. The antiproteinuric response to losartan monotherapy and losartan combined with HCT during the habitual sodium diet was significantly diminished in patients with high potassium intake (20% versus 41%, P   =   0.011; and 48% versus 64%, P   =   0.036). These differences in antiproteinuric response abolished when shifting to the LS diet. Conclusions In proteinuric CKD patients, the proteinuria, but not BP-lowering response to losartan during a habitual high-sodium diet was hampered during high potassium intake. Aim: This study was designed to examine the associations between an exaggerated systolic blood pressure (SBP) response to exercise and the nutrient intake in normotensive subjects. Methods: The subjects consisted of 302 normotensive subjects (64 males and 238 females; age, 48.4 ± 11.3 years) without a history of cardiovascular disease or stroke who were not taking any medications. Each subject performed a multistage graded submaximal exercise stress test using an electric bicycle ergometer, and their blood pressure was measured at rest and during the last minute of each stage. The nutrient intake was assessed using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. An exaggerated SBP response to exercise was defined according to the criteria of the Framingham Study (peak SBP ≥210 mmHg in males, or ≥190 mmHg in females). Results: An exaggerated SBP response to exercise was observed in 85 subjects. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the dietary sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio (odds ratio [OR]: 5.75, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.37–13.75, p = 0.001) and vitamin E intake (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.51–0.93, p = 0.012) were significantly associated with an exaggerated SBP response to exercise. Furthermore, the percent change in SBP during exercise was found to be significantly associated with an increase in the dietary Na/K ratio (p for trend = 0.0005) and a decrease in the vitamin E intake (p for trend = 0.018). Conclusions: These results suggest that an exaggerated SBP response to exercise was associated with the dietary sodium, potassium, and antioxidant vitamin intake in normotensive subjects.

Background: Sodium and potassium measured in 24-h urine collections are often used as reference measurements to validate self-reported dietary intake instruments., Objectives: To evaluate whether collection and analysis of a limited number of urine voids at specified times during the day ("timed voids") can provide alternative reference measurements, and to identify their optimal number and timing., Methods: We used data from a urine calibration study among 441 adults aged 18-39 y. Participants collected each urine void in a separate container for 24 h and recorded the collection time. For the same day, they reported dietary intake using a 24-h recall. Urinary sodium and potassium were analyzed in a 24-h composite sample and in 4 timed voids (morning, afternoon, evening, and overnight). Linear regression models were used to develop equations predicting log-transformed 24-h urinary sodium or potassium levels using each of the 4 single timed voids, 6 pairs, and 4 triples. The equations also included age, sex, race, BMI (kg/m 2 ), and log creatinine. Optimal combinations minimizing the mean squared prediction error were selected, and the observed and predicted 24-h levels were then used as reference measures to estimate the group bias and attenuation factors of the 24-h dietary recall. These estimates were compared., Results: Optimal combinations found were as follows: single voids-evening; paired voids-afternoon + overnight (sodium) and morning + evening (potassium); and triple voids-morning + evening + overnight (sodium) and morning + afternoon + evening (potassium). Predicted 24-h urinary levels estimated 24-h recall group biases and attenuation factors without apparent bias, but with less precision than observed 24-h urinary levels. Background: Excess sodium intake and insufficient potassium intake are risk factors for hypertension, but there is limited knowledge regarding genetic factors that influence intake. Twenty-hour or half-day urine samples provide robust estimates of sodium and potassium intake, outperforming other measures such as spot urine samples and dietary self-reporting.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate genomic regions associated with sodium intake, potassium intake, and sodium-to-potassium ratio measured from 24-h or half-day urine samples.Methods: Using samples of European ancestry (mean age: 54.2 y; 52.3% women), we conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies in 4 cohorts with 24-h or half-day urine samples (n = 6,519), followed by gene-based analysis. Suggestive loci (P < 10-6) were examined in additional European (n = 844), African (n = 1,246), and Asian (n = 2,475) ancestry samples.Results: We found suggestive loci (P < 10-6) for all 3 traits, including 7 for 24-h sodium excretion, 4 for 24-h potassium excretion, and 4 for sodium-to-potassium ratio. The most significant locus was rs77958157 near cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript prepropeptide (CARTPT) , a gene involved in eating behavior and appetite regulation (P = 2.3 × 10-8 with sodium-to-potassium ratio). Two suggestive loci were replicated in additional samples: for sodium excretion, rs12094702 near zinc finger SWIM-type containing 5 (ZSWIM5) was replicated in the Asian ancestry sample reaching Bonferroni-corrected significance (P = 0.007), and for potassium excretion rs34473523 near sodium leak channel (NALCN) was associated at a nominal P value with potassium excretion both in European (P = 0.043) and African (P = 0.043) ancestry cohorts. Gene-based tests identified 1 significant gene for sodium excretion, CDC42 small effector 1 (CDC42SE1), which is associated with blood pressure regulation.Conclusions: We identified multiple suggestive loci for sodium and potassium intake near genes associated with eating behavior, nervous system development and function, and blood pressure regulation in individuals of European ancestry. Further research is needed to replicate these findings and to provide insight into the underlying genetic mechanisms by which these genomic regions influence sodium and potassium intake. Background and Aims: Potassium-wasting (loop diuretics [LD]) and potassium-sparing (spironolactone) medications used for heart failure (HF) may alter renal potassium handling and confound the use of twenty-four-hour (24-h) urine collections as a surrogate marker for potassium intake, an effect that has been observed with dietary sodium assessment. The objective was to determine the strength of association between 24-h urine collections and weighed food records in assessing potassium intake in HF patients stratified by LD usage and spironolactone usage.Methods and Results: Stable outpatients with HF simultaneously completed two 24-h urine collections and two weighed food records on consecutive days. Analyses compared patients stratified by LD and/or spironolactone use. Pearson's correlation and the Bland-Altman method of agreement assessed the relationship between the techniques. Overall, 109 patients (61 ± 11 yrs, 74% male) were included. The mean difference in dietary potassium estimated between 24-h urine collections and food records was -353 ± 1043 mg (p < 0.01) for all patients, with no differences between measures among subgroups. The association between the two methods was r = 0.551 (95% CI, 0.373 to 0.852, p < 0.001) for LD users; r = 0.287 (95% CI, 0.01 to 0.570, p = 0.050) for LD non-users; r = 0.321 (95% CI, 0.13 to 0.798, p = 0.043) for spironolactone users, and; r = 0.534 (95% CI, 0.331 to 0.747, p < 0.001) for spironolactone non-users. There were no significant mean biases identified as part of the Bland-Altman analysis.Conclusion: Among HF patients, potassium-wasting and potassium-sparing medications do not influence the agreement between the two methods in the assessment of potassium intake. Background: It is a matter of debate whether sodium and potassium intake are associated with heart disease. Further, the mechanisms underlying associations of sodium and potassium intake with cardiac events, if any, are not fully understood.Objectives: We examined cross-sectional associations of 24-h urinary sodium excretion (UNaE) and potassium excretion (UKE), as estimates of their intakes, with high-sensitivity cardiac troponins T (hs-cTnT) and I (hs-cTnI), and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), which are markers of cardiomyocyte injury and cardiac dysfunction.Methods: We included 2961 participants from the population-based Maastricht Study (mean ± SD age 59.8 ± 8.2 y, 51.9% men), who completed the baseline survey between November 2010 and September 2013. Associations were examined with restricted cubic spline linear regression analyses and ordinary linear regression analyses, adjusted for demographics, lifestyle, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.Results: Median [IQR] 24-h UNaE and UKE were 3.7 [2.8-4.7] g/24 h and 3.0 [2.4-3.6] g/24 h, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, 24-h UNaE was not associated with hs-cTnT, hs-cTnI, and NT-proBNP concentrations. In contrast, after adjustment for potential confounders, lower 24-h UKE was nonlinearly associated with higher hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP. For example, as compared with the third/median quintile of 24-h UKE (range: 2.8-3.2 g/24 h), participants in the first quintile (range: 0.5-2.3 g/24 h) had 1.05 (95% CI: 0.99, 1.11) times higher hs-cTnT and 1.14 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.26) times higher NT-proBNP. Associations were similar after further adjustment for estimated glomerular filtration rate, albuminuria, blood pressure, and serum potassium.Conclusions: Twenty-four-hour UNaE was not associated with the studied cardiac biomarkers. In contrast, lower 24-h UKE was nonlinearly associated with higher hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP. This finding supports recommendations to increase potassium intake in the general population. In addition, it suggests that cardiac dysfunction and/or cardiomyocyte injury may underlie previously reported associations of lower potassium intake with CVD mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: High-potassium intake is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the association between potassium intake and the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear., Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate whether potassium intake is associated with outcomes of incident CKD., Methods: This is a population-based prospective observational cohort study from the UK Biobank cohort between 2006 and 2010. We included 317,162 participants without CKD from the UK Biobank cohort. The main predictor was spot urine potassium-to-creatinine ratio (KCR). The primary outcome was incident CKD, which was defined by the International Classification of Disease 10 codes or Operating Procedure Codes Supplement 4 codes., Results: At baseline, individuals with higher KCR had lower blood pressure, body mass index, and inflammation, and were less likely to have diabetes and hypertension. During a median follow-up of 11.9 y, primary outcome events occurred in 15,246 (4.8%) participants. In the cause-specific model, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) per 1-standard deviation increase in KCR for incident CKD was 0.90 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.89, 0.92]. Compared with quartile 1 of KCR, the aHRs (95% CIs) for quartiles 2-4 were 0.98 (0.94, 1.02), 0.90 (0.86, 0.95), and 0.80 (0.76, 0.84), respectively. In sensitivity analysis with different definitions of CKD, the results were similar. Aim: This study was designed to examine the associations between an exaggerated systolic blood pressure (SBP) response to exercise and the nutrient intake in normotensive subjects. Methods: The subjects consisted of 302 normotensive subjects (64 males and 238 females; age, 48.4 ± 11.3 years) without a history of cardiovascular disease or stroke who were not taking any medications. Each subject performed a multistage graded submaximal exercise stress test using an electric bicycle ergometer, and their blood pressure was measured at rest and during the last minute of each stage. The nutrient intake was assessed using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire. An exaggerated SBP response to exercise was defined according to the criteria of the Framingham Study (peak SBP ≥210 mmHg in males, or ≥190 mmHg in females). Results: An exaggerated SBP response to exercise was observed in 85 subjects. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the dietary sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio (odds ratio [OR]: 5.75, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.37-13.75, p = 0.001) and vitamin E intake (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.51-0.93, p = 0.012) were significantly associated with an exaggerated SBP response to exercise. Furthermore, the percent change in SBP during exercise was found to be significantly associated with an increase in the dietary Na/K ratio (p for trend = 0.0005) and a decrease in the vitamin E intake (p for trend = 0.018). Conclusions: These results suggest that an exaggerated SBP response to exercise was associated with the dietary sodium, potassium, and antioxidant vitamin intake in normotensive subjects. Objectives: In this study, we hypothesized that dietary salt and potassium intake may be related with blood pressure, kidney damage and perinatal outcome in pregnants with preeclampsia (PE). Methods: In total, 200 women (50 control women with healthy pregnancy, 150 women with PE) were recruited for the study. Daily salt and potassium intake was estimated based on calculation of 24-hour urinary sodium U[Na+] and potassium U[K+] excretion. U[Na+]/[K+] was calculated by dividing U[Na+] by U[K+]. At the end of the measurements, the pregnant women with PE (n=150) were divided into tertiles according to U[Na+]/[K+]: low Na/K group (n=50, mean U[Na+]/[K+]: 1,04±0,32), medium Na/K group (n=50, mean U[Na+]/[K+]: 2,49± 0,54), high Na/K group (n=50, mean U[Na+]/[K+]: 6,62±3,41). Results: The mean SBP and DBP levels were significantly lower in low Na/K group compared with medium or high Na/K groups (p=0.024, p=0.0002; respectively). Serum creatinine was significantly lower in low Na/K group than high Na/K group (p=0.025). Frequency of severe preeclampsia is lower in low Na/K group than medium or high Na/K groups (p=0.002, p=0.0001; respectively). Birth weight and gestational age at birth were higher in low Na/K group compared with high Na/K group (p=0.045, p=0.0002; respectively). After adjusting for covariates, SBP and DBP and creatinine levels were independently associated with 24 hours urinary [Na+]/[K+] Conclusion: These findings suggest that pregnant with PE with high dietary salt and low potassium intake may have greater maternal and neonatal morbidity risk than pregnant with PE under low dietary salt and high potassium intake.

ObjectiveThe main objective of the present study was to evaluate sodium and potassium intake, employing 24 h and spot urine samples and food diaries for seven consecutive days.MethodsFor seven consecutive days subjects recorded their food and drink intakes, and recorded and collected all urinations. Food sodium and potassium intake were analyzed in 24- and 6-h intervals from wake-up time. Urine indices were analyzed in first morning, 24- and 6-h intervals samples over the day from wake-up time. The study took place in Agricultural University of Athens, Greece. In total, 163 healthy subjects (age 39 ± 12 years; 74 females) were enrolled in the study.ResultsMean urine sodium excretion was 2,803.3 ± 1,249.0 mg/day (121.9 ± 54.3 mmol/day) and mean urine potassium excretion was 2,152.2 ± 913.3 mg/day (55.2 ± 23.4 mmol/day). The highest potassium concentration was measured in the afternoon, while the lowest sodium concentration was measured in the overnight 6-h interval. Food sodium intake was 1,983.2 ± 814.1 mg/day and food potassium was 2,264.5 ± 653.3 mg/day. The sources that contribute most in food sodium intake are dairy products 24%, breads 22%, and savory snacks 17%.ConclusionStrategies should encourage the Greek population to moderate sodium intake and promote potassium intake, thus adopting a healthier dietary and lifestyle pattern.

Background: Despite all the research that has been conducted so far on the correlation between sodium intake and hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke, the results thereof have no consistency. Methods: By utilizing the data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we carried out a more systematic investigation on sodium intake and prevalence rates in Korean adults. Sodium intake per kilogram, on which sodium intake is divided by weight, was applied to a model as a variable and the data has been separately analyzed according to sex. The total number of observed values after outlier elimination was 27,346, including 10,936 men and 16,410 women. Results: It was found that there is a positive correlation between sodium intake and prevalence rates of coronary heart disease, while potassium intake has a negative correlation with prevalence rates of hypertension and stroke. Conclusion: In order to control the effect of sodium on diseases, attention must also be paid to the influence of potassium on diseases as a covariate, and it is considered that additional research should be made regarding the role of potassium in studying the impact of sodium on health in the future.
