Nature‐based solutions, through conservation or (re)creation of vegetated shorelines, are recognized to mitigate the impact of waves and erosion risks on shorelines. Wave attenuation is known to be dependent on plant traits, resulting in increasing wave attenuation rates with increasing shoot density, shoot thickness, height, and stiffness. However, following the allometric scaling theory, we hypothesize that increasing shoot density (a canopy‐scale trait) may be associated with decreasing shoot thickness and stiffness (a shoot‐scale trait), with potential opposing effects on overall wave attenuation. This study investigates (1) the presence of such allometric relations across intertidal shore plant species via existing literature and (2) the trade‐off effects on the overall wave attenuation capacity of shore vegetation through a flume experiment. Our results reveal for the first time the presence of allometric relationships between shoot‐scale and canopy‐scale plant properties in perennial intertidal plant species. Across different species, increasing shoot densities are indeed associated with decreasing shoot thickness and shoot stiffness. Next, we performed a wave flume experiment with plant mimics, showing that wave attenuation rate follows a logarithmic increase with increasing shoot density, even though the increasing shoot density was associated with thinner and more flexible individual shoots. We conclude that wave attenuation is predominantly governed by canopy‐scale properties, but a trade‐off with shoot‐scale properties mediates the overall wave attenuation capacity of the vegetated shore. Our findings imply that nature‐based projects (re‐)creating vegetated shorelines should account for potential trade‐off effects of species‐specific plant traits at the canopy scale and individual shoot scale. Warming associated with climate change will advance the onset of spring phenology for many forest plants across the Eastern United States. Understory forbs and spring ephemerals that fix a disproportionate amount of carbon during early spring may be negatively affected by earlier canopy closure; however, information on the spatial patterns of phenological change for these communities is still lacking. To assess the potential for changes in spring phenological windows, we synthesized observations from the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMCs) Mountain Watch (MW) project, the National Phenology Network (NPN), and AMC's iNaturalist projects between 2004 and 2022 (n = 118,250) across the length of the Appalachian Trail (AT) Corridor (34° N–46° N latitude). We used hierarchical Bayesian modeling to examine the sensitivity of spring flowering and leaf‐out for 11 understory species and 14 canopy tree species to mean spring temperature (April–June). We conducted analyses across the AT Corridor, partitioned by regions of 4° latitude (south, mid‐Atlantic, and north). Spring phenologies for both understory plants and canopy trees advanced with warming (~6 and ~3 days/°C, respectively). However, the sensitivity of each group varied by latitude, with the phenology of trees and understory plants advancing to a greater degree in the mid‐Atlantic region (~10 days/°C) than in the southern or northern regions (~5 days/°C). While we find evidence that phenological windows remain stable in the southern and mid‐Atlantic portions of the AT, we observed an expansion of the spring phenological window in the north where there was greater understory forb temperature sensitivity compared with trees (~2.7 days/°C). Our analyses indicate the differential sensitivity of forest plant phenology to potential warming across a large latitudinal gradient in the Eastern United States. Further, evidence for a temperature‐driven expansion of the spring phenological window suggests a potential beneficial effect for understory plants in the northern AT, although phenological mismatch with potential pollinators and increased vulnerability to late winter frosts are possible. Using extensive citizen‐science datasets allows us to synthesize regional‐ and continental‐scale data to explore spatial and temporal trends in spring phenology related to warming. Background: Phytogenic mounds are a type of microtopography formed under perennial plants canopies in water erosion areas. However, the function of phytogenic mounds in seed assemblages and their ecological consequences remain poorly understood in semiarid areas with water erosion. Thus, understanding the characteristics of seed banks on mounds is crucial for ecosystem conservation and management in water-eroded areas. Methods: We compared the quantity and composition of soil seed banks on the upslope and downslope parts of mounds and intercanopy surfaces along four slope gradients. We also explored the relationships among the soil seed bank, aboveground vegetation, and environmental factors. Furthermore, the species similarity between the soil seed bank and aboveground vegetation was analyzed to clarify the important ecological consequences of phytogenic mounds for plant community construction in serious soil erosion area. Results: For slopes with a = 46.6%, the intercanopy surfaces had greater soil seed bank species composition, density, and diversity than did the phytogenic mounds, and these characteristics showed no significant differences between the upslope and downslope parts of the mounds. As the slope increased, the soil seed bank density and species composition increased on the upslope part of the mound, and reached a maximum for slopes with a > 70%, while the downslope part of the mound negatively effected on seed aggregation. The sediment accumulation rate, soil moisture, particle size distribution, pH, organic matter carbon, and hardness were significantly correlated with the soil seed bank density and diversity in the study area. For slopes with 0 < a = 26.8%, the species similarity coefficient between the soil seed bank and aboveground vegetation was the highest for the intercanopy surface. This species similarity on the upslope part of the mound showed an increasing trend with increasing slope gradient, while the downslope part of the mound had the opposite trend. For slopes with a > 70%, the upslope part of the mound did not only have more species in the soil seed bank but also had more species in aboveground vegetation than did the downslope part of the mound and intercanopy surface. Conclusion: For slopes with a = 46.6%, phytogenic mounds had barely impact soil seed bank accumulation and conservation in semiarid and eroded areas. For slopes with a > 46.6%, the mounds (particularly on the upslope part of the mound) showed seed assemblage functions, which are coupled with improving edaphic conditions and decreasing microhabitat stress; thus, phytogenic mounds, or areas of microtopography, can be used to promote restoration success in semiarid eroded areas. The genus Encephalartos is entirely endemic to Africa, and like most cycad species, the genus is at risk of extinction. One of the threats jeopardising the future of the genus is reproduction failure, a failure that is still poorly understood. Our objective was to investigate what predisposes Encephalartos species to seed damages through predation, a potential cause of reproduction failure. We collected functional traits of 430 individuals of Encephalartos villosus, as well as data on pre‐dispersal seed predation, habitat type and elevation in the Origi Gorge Nature Reserve, South Africa. Then, we analysed our data by fitting a structural equation model. We found that plants tend to be taller when moving from open to close habitat, whereas plant height tends to increase along elevation. In addition, taller plants tend to have more leaves, and plant canopy size shows significant positive relationship with elevation, plant height and number of leaves. These findings suggest a leaf height–canopy dimension strategy perhaps in response to environmental stresses imposed by elevation. We tested the effects of habitat types on seed production. Although there were significantly more seeds in open habitats, open habitats showed the lowest proportion of predated seeds. Finally, we tested the effects of elevation on seed production. We found that seed production decreases along elevation while the proportion of predated seeds increases. Under the resource concentration hypothesis, these findings (where there are more resources, predation is low) are unexpected, suggesting rather that it is the resource dilution effect that matches the pre‐dispersal seed predation patterns in our study area. We suggest that anthropogenic pressures at lower elevation due to easy access may cause seed predators to shift towards higher elevation where they cause heavier damage to seed, thus perhaps contributing to the extinction risk of the genus Encephalartos. Waterlogging increasingly challenges crop production, affecting 10% of global arable land, necessitating the development of pragmatic strategies for mitigating the downside risk of yield penalty. Here, we conducted experiments under controlled (tank) and field conditions to evaluate the efficacy of nitrogenous fertiliser in alleviating waterlogging stress. Without intervention, we found that waterlogging reduced grain yields, spike numbers and shoot biomass, but had a de minimus impact on grain number per spike and increased grain weight. Soil fertiliser mitigated waterlogging damage, enhancing yields via increased spike numbers, with crop recovery post-waterlogging catalysed via improved tiller numbers, plant height and canopy greenness. Foliar nitrogen spray has little impact on crop recovery, possibly due to stomatal closure, while modest urea application during and after waterlogging yielded similar results to greater N application at the end of waterlogging. Waterlogging-tolerant genotypes (P-17 and P-52) showed superior growth and recovery during and after waterlogging compared to the waterlogging-sensitive genotypes (Planet and P-79). A comparison of fertiliser timing revealed that field fertilizer treatment two (F2: 90 kg·ha−1 at 28 DWL, 45 kg·ha−1 at sowing and 45 kg·ha−1 at 30 DR) yielded the highest and fertilizer treatment three (F3: 45 kg·ha−1 at sowing and 45 kg·ha−1 at 30 DR) recovered the lowest yield and spike number, while fertilizer treatment one (F1: 45 kg·ha−1 at 28 DWL, 45 kg·ha−1 at 0 DR, 45 kg·ha−1 at sowing and 45 kg·ha−1 at 30 DR) and four (F4: 90 kg·ha−1 at 0 DR, 45 kg·ha−1 at sowing and 45 kg·ha−1 at 30 DR) had the highest shoot biomass in the field. Treatment five (T5: 180 kg·ha−1 at 0 DR, 30 kg·ha−1 at sowing and 90 kg·ha−1 at 30 DR) presented the most favourable results in the tank. Our results provide rigorous evidence that long periods of waterlogging caused significant yield penalty, mainly due to decreased spike numbers. We contend that increasing fertiliser rates during waterlogging up to 90 kg·ha−1 can provoke crop growth and mitigate waterlogging-induced grain yield losses, and is more beneficial than applying nitrogen post-waterlogging. Leaf shape is a vital agronomic trait that affects plant and canopy architecture, yield, and other production attributes of upland cotton. Compared with normal leaves, lobed leaves have potential advantages in improving canopy structure and increasing cotton yield. A chromosomal introgression segment from Gossypium barbadense L. conferring sub-okra leaf shape to Gossypium hirsutum L. was identified on chromosome D01. To determine the effects of this transferred subokra leaf shape on the leaf anatomical characteristics, photosynthesis-related traits, and yield of short-season cotton, we performed a field experiment with three sets of near-isogenic lines carrying okra, sub-okra, and normal leaf shape in Lu54 (L54) and Shizao 2 (SZ2) backgrounds. Compared with normal leaves, subokra leaves exhibited reduced leaf thickness and smaller leaf mass per area; moreover, the deeper lobes of sub-okra leaves improved the plant canopy structure by decreasing leaf area index by 11.24%-22.84%. Similarly, the intercepted PAR rate of lines with sub-okra leaf shape was also reduced. The chlorophyll content of sub-okra leaves was lower than that of okra and normal leaf shapes; however, the net photosynthetic rate of sub-okra leaves was 8.17%-29.81% higher than that of other leaf shapes at most growth stages. Although the biomass of lines with sub-okra leaf shape was less than that of lines with normal leaves, the average first harvest yield and total yield of lines with the sub-okra leaf shape increased by 6.36% and 5.72%, respectively, compared with those with normal leaves. Thus, improvements in the canopy structure and photosynthetic and physiological characteristics contributed to optimizing the light environment, thereby increasing the yield of lines with sub-okra leaf shape. Our results suggest that the sub-okra leaf trait from G. barbadense L. may have practical applications for cultivating short-season varieties with high photosynthetic efficiency, and improving yield, which will be advantageous for short-season varieties. Precision agriculture, rooted in the principles of intelligent agriculture, plays a pivotal role in fostering a sustainable, healthy, and eco-friendly economy. In order to promote the precision and intelligence of potato seedling management, an innovative platform designed using phased array LiDAR technology was used for precise and accurate detection of potato canopy height. The platform is intricately designed, featuring a suite of components that includes a high-precision rotary encoder, a reliable motor, a robust frame, an inclinometer for precise angle measurements, a computer for data processing, a height adjustment mechanism for adaptability, and an advanced LiDAR system. The LiDAR system is tasked with emitting pulses of laser light toward the canopy of the potato plants, which then scans the canopy to ascertain its height. The result of this scanning process is a rich, three-dimensional point cloud data map that provides a detailed representation of the entire experimental population of potato seedlings. Subsequently, a specialized algorithm for potato seedling canopy height was designed based on integrating the altitude of LiDAR's installation, the precise measurements from the inclinometer sensor, and the meticulously conducted postprocessing of canopy height data. This algorithm meticulously accounts for a multitude of variables, thereby ensuring a high degree of precision and reliability in the assessment of the potato canopy's dimensions. The minimum relative error between the measured values of the outdoor canopy height detection platform and the manually measured height is 3.67 ± 0.42%, and the maximum relative error is 8.36 ± 3.47%, respectively. The average relative error is between 3 and 9%, comfortably below the 10% benchmark, which meets the rigorous measurement standards. This platform can efficiently, automatically, and accurately scan the canopy information of potato plants, providing a reference for the automated detection of potato canopy height. An accurate gas utilization model is essential for precisely detecting plant photosynthetic capacity. Existing equipment for measuring the plant photosynthetic rate typically considers the key parameters of mesophyll cell conductance and a photosynthetic model based on the carbon reaction process under direct light conditions. However, the light environment signals received by the plant canopy not only vary significantly in incidence angles, but the effective light intensity also differs greatly from the measured values under vertical incidence conditions. To reduce the deviation between existing photosynthetic models and the actual photosynthetic efficiency of leaves, this study employs the gas diffusion method from engineering, using the finite element approach. Based on elastic mechanics and seepage mechanics, the internal stress field control equation of tomato leaves and the two-phase flow equation under a CO2 porous medium were derived. A mathematical model of porous gas–liquid two-phase fluid-solid coupling was established, solved, and analyzed. Preliminary verification was conducted through tests. The results show that in the initial stage of CO2 entering the leaf, the gas flow velocity is higher because of the larger pressure gradient between the pore and the leaf. In this stage, the gas diffusion rate is higher. As the intake time increases, the pressure gradient gradually decreases, and the inlet velocity slows down. Consequently, the diffusion rate gradually reduces. Because of the coupling of light quantity and light direction, the gas diffusion rate significantly increases compared with the uncoupled model. Additionally, a diffusion model that does not consider fluid–solid coupling will overestimate the gas flow rate as the depth of gas entry increases. Appropriate water supply is crucial for high-yield and high-quality potato tuber production. However, potatoes are mainly planted in arid and semi-arid regions in China, where the precipitation usually cannot meet the water demand throughout the growth period. In view of the actual situation of water shortage in these areas, to monitor the water status of potato plants timely and accurately and thus precisely control the irrigation are of significance for water-saving management of potatoes. Hyperspectral remote sensing has unique advantages in diagnosing crop water stress. In this paper, the canopy spectral reflectance and plant water content were measured under five irrigation treatments. The spectral parameters that respond to plant water content were selected, and a hyperspectral water diagnosis model for leaf water content (LWC) and aboveground water content (AGWC) of potato plants was established. It was found that potato tuber yield was the highest during the entire growth period under sufficient irrigation, and the plant water content showed a downward trend as the degree of drought intensified. The peak hyperspectral reflectance of potato plant canopies appeared in the red wavelength, where the reflectance varied significantly under different water treatments and decreased with decreasing irrigation. Six models with sensitive bands, first-order derivatives, and moisture spectral indices were established to monitor water content of potato plants. The R2 values of partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector machine (SVM), and BP neural network (BP) models are 0.8418, 0.9020, and 0.8926, respectively, between LWC and hyperspectral data; and 0.8003, 0.8167, and 0.8671, respectively, between the AGWC and hyperspectral data. These six models can all predict the water content of potato plants, but SVM is the best model for predicting LWC of potato plants. Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) is a polyphagous pest that can cause serious damage to crops, including soybeans (Glycine max L.). In soybeans with both determinate and indeterminate growth habits, H. zea larvae are more commonly found on leaves compared to blooms, stems, and pods. Past research demonstrated that H. zea adults tend to oviposit near the upper part of the plant canopy in soybeans with a determinate growth habit. However, ovipositional selection on soybeans with an indeterminate growth habit is unknown. We hypothesized that H. zea would oviposit more uniformly throughout the canopy on indeterminate soybean growth habits due to more diffuse reproductive tissue. We planted field and greenhouse experiments with varieties sharing a similar relative maturity (2 maturity group [MG] 5.2 varieties and 2 MG 5.4/5.5 varieties) but with different growth habits. To test oviposition selection, adult H. zea females were allowed to oviposit under field and caged conditions. We counted the number of H. zea eggs and neonates on each plant tissue type from each of 3 equal parts in the plant canopy: upper, middle, and lower. In both experiments, eggs and neonates were most common on leaves at the top of the plant regardless of soybean growth habit. Consequently, ovipositional selection is likely independent of reproductive tissue availability, and patterns of oviposition through the canopy are similar in growth habits. Drought stress poses a significant risk to soybean production, as it relies on optimum rainfall under rainfed conditions. Exposure to brief dry periods during early vegetative growth impacts soybean growth and development. Choosing a genotype that can withstand stress with minimal impact on physiology and growth might help sustain biomass or yields under low rainfall conditions. Therefore, this study characterized 64 soybean genotypes for traits associated with drought tolerance during the early vegetative stage under two soil moisture treatments, 100% evapotranspiration (well-watered) and 50% evapotranspiration (drought), using the Soil–Plant–Atmosphere Research (SPAR) units. Eighteen morpho-physiological traits responses were assessed, and their relationship with the early vegetative drought tolerance was investigated. Drought stress significantly increased root weight, root volume, and root-to-shoot ratio but reduced shoot weight. Drought-stressed plants increased the canopy temperature by 3.1 °C. Shoot weight positively correlated with root surface area (r = 0.52, P < 0.001) and root weight (r = 0.65, P < 0.001). There was a strong negative correlation between shoot weight and root-to-shoot ratio (P < 0.01). Further, the combined drought response index was strongly associated with the root response index and weakly with the physiological response index. These findings suggest that genotypes (S55-Q3 and R2C4775) with high above-ground biomass with a balanced root-to-shoot ratio improves drought tolerance during the early vegetative. These genotypes could serve as valuable genetic resources to dissect the molecular networks underlying drought tolerance and ultimately be used in breeding programs to improve root ability at the early vegetative stage. Solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF) is a proxy of ecosystem photosynthesis that often scales linearly with gross primary productivity (GPP) at the canopy scale. However, the mechanistic relationship between GPP and SIF is still uncertain, especially at smaller temporal and spatial scales. We deployed a ultra‐hyperspectral imager over two grassland sites in California throughout a soil moisture dry down. The imager has high spatial resolution that limits mixed pixels, enabling differentiation between plants and leaves within one scene. We find that imager SIF correlates well with diurnal changes in leaf‐level physiology and gross primary productivity under well‐watered conditions. These relationships deteriorate throughout the dry down event. Our results demonstrate an advancement in SIF imaging with new possibilities in remotely sensing plant canopies from the leaf to the ecosystem. These data can be used to resolve outstanding questions regarding SIF's meaning and usefulness in terrestrial ecosystem monitoring. Plain Language Summary: Estimating the rate of carbon uptake by vegetation across space and time remains a challenge. Solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF), the emission of light by vegetation during photosynthesis, has recently emerged as a potential estimate of carbon uptake in many ecosystems and is observable from both satellites and ground‐based sensors. Here we present results from a field campaign with a novel SIF instrument that creates images (akin to a photo) across a landscape, allowing for SIF measurements from individual leaves, plants, or areas of interest. We find that SIF retrievals from the imager correspond to seasonal variations in carbon dioxide fixation rates and leaf‐level physiology relating to photosynthesis. Photosystem I (PSI) from Fittonia albivenis, an Acanthaceae ornamental plant, is notable among green plants for its red-shifted emission spectrum. Here, we solved the structure of a PSI–light harvesting complex I (LHCI) supercomplex from F. albivenis at 2.46-Å resolution using cryo-electron microscopy. The supercomplex contains a core complex of 14 subunits and an LHCI belt with four antenna subunits (Lhca1–4) similar to previously reported angiosperm PSI–LHCI structures; however, Lhca3 differs in three regions surrounding a dimer of low-energy chlorophylls (Chls) termed red Chls, which absorb far-red beyond visible light. The unique amino acid sequences within these regions are exclusively shared by plants with strongly red-shifted fluorescence emission, suggesting candidate structural elements for regulating the energy state of red Chls. These results provide a structural basis for unraveling the mechanisms of light harvest and transfer in PSI–LHCI of under canopy plants and for designing Lhc to harness longer-wavelength light in the far-red spectral range. Key Message: Understanding the impact of extreme drought on the canopy fuel moisture content (CFMC) is crucial to anticipate the effects of climate change on wildfires. Our study demonstrates that foliage mortality, caused by leaf embolism, can substantially diminish CFMC during drought on Pinus halepensis Mill. and Quercus ilex L. It emphasizes the importance of considering plant hydraulics to improve wildfire predictions. Context: Canopy fuel moisture content (CFMC), which represents the water-to-dry mass ratio in leaves and fine twigs within the canopy, is a major factor of fire danger across ecosystems worldwide. CFMC results from the fuel moisture content of living foliage (live fuel moisture content, LFMC) and dead foliage (dead fuel moisture content, DFMC) weighted by the proportion of foliage mortality in the canopy (αDead). Understanding how LFMC, αDead, and ultimately CFMC are affected during extreme drought is essential for effective wildfire planning. Aims: We aimed to understand how plant hydraulics affect CFMC for different levels of soil water deficit, examining its influence on both LFMC and αDead. Methods: We conducted a drought experiment on seedlings of two Mediterranean species: Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) and Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.). Throughout the drought experiment and after rewatering, we monitored CFMC, LFMC, and αDead along with other ecophysiological variables. Results: LFMC exhibited a significant decrease during drought, and as leaf water potentials reached low levels, αDead increased in both species, thereby reducing CFMC. Distinct water use strategies resulted in species-specific variations in dehydration dynamics. Total leaf area per plant is an important measure of the photosynthetic capacity of an individual plant that together with plant density drives the canopy leaf area index, that is, the total leaf area per unit ground area. Because the total number of leaves per plant (or per shoot) varies among conspecifics and among mixed species communities, this variation can affect the total leaf area per plant and per canopy but has been little studied. Previous studies have shown a strong linear relationship between the total leaf area per plant (or per shoot) (AT) and the total number of leaves per plant (or per shoot) (NT) on a log–log scale for several growth forms. However, little is known whether such a scaling relationship also holds true for bamboos, which are a group of Poaceae plants with great ecological and economic importance in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. To test whether the scaling relationship holds true in bamboos, two dwarf bamboo species (Shibataea chinensis Nakai and Sasaella kongosanensis 'Aureostriatus') with a limited but large number of leaves per culm were examined. For the two species, the leaves from 480 and 500 culms, respectively, were sampled and AT was calculated by summing the areas of individual leaves per culm. Linear regression and correlation analyses reconfirmed that there was a significant log–log linear relationship between AT and NT for each species. For S. chinensis, the exponent of the AT versus NT scaling relationship was greater than unity, whereas that of S. kongosanensis 'Aureostriatus' was smaller than unity. The coefficient of variation in individual leaf area increased with increasing NT for each species. The data reconfirm that there is a strong positive power‐law relationship between AT and NT for each of the two species, which may reflect adaptations of plants in response to intra‐ and inter‐specific competition for light. Developing new bread wheat varieties that can be successfully grown in saline conditions has become a pressing task for plant breeders. High-throughput phenotyping tools are crucial for this task. Proximal remote sensing is gaining popularity in breeding programs as a quick, cost-effective, and non-invasive tool to assess canopy structure and physiological traits in large genetic pools. Limited research has been conducted on the effectiveness of combining RGB and thermal imaging to assess the salt tolerance of different wheat genotypes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining several indices derived from thermal infrared and RGB images with artificial neural networks (ANNs) for assessing relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll a (Chla), chlorophyll b (Chlb), total chlorophyll (Chlt), and plant dry weight (PDW) of 18 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and their 3 parents irrigated with saline water (150 mM NaCl). The results showed significant differences in various traits and indices among the tested genotypes. The normalized relative canopy temperature (NRCT) index exhibited strong correlations with RWC, Chla, Chlb, Chlt, and PDW, with R2 values ranging from 0.50 to 0.73, 0.53 to 0.76, 0.68 to 0.84, 0.68 to 0.84, and 0.52 to 0.76, respectively. Additionally, there was a strong relationship between several RGB indices and measured traits, with the highest R2 values reaching up to 0.70. The visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI), a popular index derived from RGB imaging, showed significant correlations with NRCT, RWC, Chla, Chlb, Chlt, and PDW, with R2 values ranging from 0.49 to 0.62 across two seasons. The different ANNs models demonstrated high predictive accuracy for NRCT and other measured traits, with R2 values ranging from 0.62 to 0.90 in the training dataset and from 0.46 to 0.68 in the cross-validation dataset. Thus, our study shows that integrating high-throughput digital image tools with ANN models can efficiently and non-invasively assess the salt tolerance of a large number of wheat genotypes in breeding programs. The disposition of spectral solar irradiance in plant canopies is crucially important to understand processes such as photolysis of molecules amenable to absorbing actinic light. Thus, one objective of this study is to evaluate the most commonly applied radiative transfer approaches to estimate spectral irradiance as a function of plant canopy depth. Eight radiative transfer approaches are ascertained. Another objective is to determine the impacts of the spectral resolution assumed in radiative transfer calculations and model choice on key processes such as canopy absorption and reflection of irradiance. By comparing results from broadband‐only and spectrally‐resolved canopy radiative transfer, we aim to quantitatively determine the uncertainties associated with failing to resolve the sunlight spectra. We determine the optimal spectral resolution required to estimate canopy radiative transfer results such as air‐chemistry‐specific quantities related to photolysis of a select group of molecules. In addition, we evaluate techniques for binning leaf and soil optical properties. Results showed that high spectral resolution is ideally desired to compute photolysis of molecules such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, nitrate radical, nitrous acid, and formaldehyde. For in‐canopy photolysis of molecules, a waveband resolution of at least 10 nm is sufficient to obtain accurate estimates for most photochemical reactions. Positive reaction‐dependent uncertainties in canopy‐mean relative photolysis values for individual molecules can be as high as 30% compared to estimates derived with broad‐band solar irradiance. Plain Language Summary: In regions dominated by tall and dense forest canopies, climate models need to resolve the vertical variation of sunlight to estimate assimilation of gases by foliage. Knowledge of sunlight disposition in forest canopies is also needed to determine light‐driven reactions of gases. Most climate models employ broadband sunlight to determine radiative transfer in plant canopies. Given that in‐plant canopy processes such as reactions of gases require knowledge of sunlight specified at high wavelength resolution, eight different radiative transfer models are considered to discern the most reliable approach to compute the disposition of solar radiation as a function of both canopy depth and wavelength. Results indicate it is necessary to estimate the in‐canopy disposition of sunlight as a function of wavelength to reliably compute dissociation of molecules susceptible to sunlight absorption. As part of the light spectra included in radiative transfer numerical models, a waveband resolution of at least 10 nm is necessary to reduce uncertainties of less than 30% of sunlight‐mediated dissociation of molecules such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide. Global hydroclimatic variability is increasing with more frequent extreme dry and wet years, severely destabilizing terrestrial ecosystem productivity. However, what regulates the consequence of precipitation extremes on productivity remains unclear. Based on a 9‐year field manipulation experiment on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, we found that the responses of gross primary productivity (GPP) to extreme drought and wetness were differentially regulated by nitrogen (N) deposition. Over increasing N deposition, extreme dry events reduced GPP more. Among the 12 biotic and abiotic factors examined, this was mostly explained by the increased plant canopy height and proportion of drought‐sensitive species under N deposition, making photosynthesis more sensitive to hydraulic stress. While extreme wet events increased GPP, their effect did not shift over N deposition. These site observations were complemented by a global synthesis derived from the GOSIF GPP dataset, which showed that GPP sensitivity to extreme drought was larger in ecosystems with higher N deposition, but GPP sensitivity to extreme wetness did not change with N deposition. Our findings indicate that intensified hydroclimatic variability would lead to a greater loss of land carbon sinks in the context of increasing N deposition, due to that GPP losses during extreme dry years are more pronounced, yet without a synchronous increase in GPP gains during extreme wet years. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in forests can affect soil microbial growth and turnover directly through increasing N availability and indirectly through altering plant‐derived carbon (C) availability for microbes. This impacts microbial residues (i.e., amino sugars), a major component of soil organic carbon (SOC). Previous studies in forests have so far focused on the impact of understory N addition on microbes and microbial residues, but the effect of N deposition through plant canopy, the major pathway of N deposition in nature, has not been explicitly explored. In this study, we investigated whether and how the quantities (25 and 50 kg N ha−1 year−1) and modes (canopy and understory) of N addition affect soil microbial residues in a temperate broadleaf forest under 10‐year N additions. Our results showed that N addition enhanced the concentrations of soil amino sugars and microbial residual C (MRC) but not their relative contributions to SOC, and this effect on amino sugars and MRC was closely related to the quantities and modes of N addition. In the topsoil, high‐N addition significantly increased the concentrations of amino sugars and MRC, regardless of the N addition mode. In the subsoil, only canopy N addition positively affected amino sugars and MRC, implying that the indirect pathway via plants plays a more important role. Neither canopy nor understory N addition significantly affected soil microbial biomass (as represented by phospholipid fatty acids), community composition and activity, suggesting that enhanced microbial residues under N deposition likely stem from increased microbial turnover. These findings indicate that understory N addition may underestimate the impact of N deposition on microbial residues and SOC, highlighting that the processes of canopy N uptake and plant‐derived C availability to microbes should be taken into consideration when predicting the impact of N deposition on the C sequestration in temperate forests. Airflow plays a crucial role in plant growth because it supplies CO2, O2, and energy to plants in a plant factory with artificial light (PFAL). Therefore, understanding how various factors affect airflow in and around a plant canopy is essential. In this study, we developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with realistic plant structures created using structure-from-motion imaging to investigate airflow in and around a plant canopy. The averages of the absolute percentage errors of simulated air velocity in three conditions were 6.7%, 10.1%, 12.7%, respectively. The simulated and measured air velocities agreed well, confirming the accuracy of the developed CFD model. The effects of inflow velocities and plant canopy structures on the airflow in and around the plant canopy were analysed using the validated CFD model. The inflow velocities significantly decreased stagnant zones (from 62.4% to 7.2%) and increased the airflow uniformity in and around the plant canopy. A staggered layout of the plant canopy slightly decreased stagnant zones (from 16.4% to 13.2%) and increased the airflow uniformity. The airflow in and around the plant canopy was further inhibited by a large plant structure. This CFD model provided a basis for improving the airflow status in and around a plant canopy in a PFAL. This study aimed to investigate the evaporation (E) and transpiration (T) components of evapotranspiration (ETc), and the growth parameters of curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Caipira) grown under different irrigation treatments. The study was conducted in a Mediterranean-type plastic greenhouse located in Antalya, Türkiye, in the fall and spring growing seasons of 2020 and 2021, respectively. To assess the impact of water stress on ETc and its components, three different irrigation water levels [ I100 for full irrigation treatment (100%), I66 for 66% (I100×0.66), and I33 for 33% (I100×0.33)] were selected. Planted and unplanted pots were used to measure ETc and E independently. The values obtained from these measurements were used as inputs to calculate the evaporation that occurred in the soil under the crop canopy and plant transpiration. In the present study, T was determined indirectly from the difference of measured evapotranspiration and evaporation and estimated with the modified Hernandez-Suarez model (Te). The modified model for the different irrigation treatments showed high Te estimation performance. Evaporation from the soil in the planted pots (Es) was calculated by considering the canopy cover and soil water content. The study revealed that water stress significantly affected lettuce plant height, root length, cover percentage, leaf area index (LAI), number of leaves, fresh and dry head weights, and root weights (p<0.01). The study also investigated the relationship between Es/ETc , and LAI using an exponential method and established a strong nonlinear relationship in all irrigation treatments (R2>0.90). The modified model developed for different irrigation treatments in Mediterranean-type greenhouses can be used to predict lettuce ETc values with greater precision and to better understand the partitioning of ETc into its constituent components. Accurate, non-destructive and cost-effective estimation of crop canopy Soil Plant Analysis De-velopment(SPAD) is crucial for precision agriculture and cultivation management. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms have shown tremendous potential in predicting crop canopy SPAD. This was because they can rapidly and accurately acquire remote sensing spectral data of the crop canopy in real-time. In this study, a UAV equipped with a five-channel multispectral camera (Blue, Green, Red, Red_edge, Nir) was used to acquire multispectral images of sugar beets. These images were then combined with five machine learning models, namely K-Nearest Neighbor, Lasso, Random Forest, RidgeCV and Support Vector Machine (SVM), as well as ground measurement data to predict the canopy SPAD of sugar beets. The results showed that under both normal irrigation and drought stress conditions, the SPAD values in the normal ir-rigation treatment were higher than those in the water-limited treatment. Multiple vegetation indices showed a significant correlation with SPAD, with the highest correlation coefficient reaching 0.60. Among the SPAD prediction models, different models showed high estimation accuracy under both normal irrigation and water-limited conditions. The SVM model demon-strated a good performance with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.635, root mean square error (Rmse) of 2.13, and relative error (Re) of 0.80% for the prediction and testing values under normal irrigation. Similarly, for the prediction and testing values under drought stress, the SVM model exhibited a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.609, root mean square error (Rmse) of 2.71, and rela-tive error (Re) of 0.10%. Accompanying climate change and sea level rise, tidal marsh mortality in coastal wetlands has been globally observed that urges the documentation of high-resolution, 3D marsh inventory to assist resilience planning. Drone Lidar has proven useful in extracting the fine-scale bare earth terrain and canopy height. Beyond that, this study performed marsh biomass mapping from drone Lidar point cloud in a S. alterniflora-dominated estuary on the Southeast U.S. coast. Three point classes (ground, low-veg, and high-veg) were classified via point cloud deep learning. Considering only vegetation points in the vertical profile, a profile area-weighted height (HPA) was extracted at a grid size of 50 cm × 50 cm. Vegetation point densities were also extracted at each grid. Adopting the plant-level allometric equations of stem biomass from long-term S. alterniflora surveys, a Lidar biomass index (Lidar_BI) was built to represent the relative quantity of marsh biomass in a range of [0, 1] across the estuary. Compared with the clipped dry biomass samples, it achieved a comparable and slightly better performance (R2 = 0.5) than the commonly applied spectral index approaches (R2 = 0.4) in the same marsh field. This study indicates the feasibility of the drone Lidar point cloud for marsh biomass mapping. More advantageously, the drone Lidar approach yields information on plant community architecture, such as canopy height and plant density distributions, which are key factors in evaluating marsh habitat and its ecological services. Water flow on plant canopies determines the partitioning of intercepted rainfall between stemflow and throughflow, yet understanding of these flow processes remains minimally developed. Plant canopies may concentrate intercepted water into rivulets that flow beneath branches. If the rivulets remain attached to branches until they encounter the main tree trunk, they form stemflow. If the rivulets detach from branches, however, they form 'pour points', regions of concentrated throughfall. Here, rivulet flow below uniform cylinders was studied experimentally. Experimental observations were interpreted using hydrodynamic theory to predict the likelihood of a rivulet detaching based on a critical rivulet height (λc$$ {\lambda}_c $$). Predictions of rivulet detachment were explored for a simplified case where water is introduced at known flow rates at a discrete point above a uniform, cylindrical 'branch'. Where the branch was straight, the percentage of trials forming a rivulet, or the rivulet formation rate, increased with increasing branch inclination angle to the horizontal axis. Rivulet formation rates did not vary with flow rate. However, the volume of water collected at the end of the branch, analogous to stemflow, decreased with a higher flow rates due to the formation of flow instabilities. Rivulets forming on straight branches did not detach. Instead, the rivulet stream accelerated and reduced in height as it flowed along the cylinder. Rivulets formed on curved branches detached only when the branch axis after the curve approached the horizontal. Future theoretical and experimental studies can extend this work to improve understanding of more complex surfaces and branch architectures to mechanistically understand canopy interception. Across the western United States, forests are changing rapidly, with uncertain impacts on snowmelt water resources. Snow partitioning is controlled by forest effects on interception, radiation, and sublimation. Yet, models often lack snow measurements with sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution across gradients of forest structure to accurately represent these fine-scale processes. Here, we utilize four Snowtography stations in Arizona, in the lower Colorado River Basin, with daily measurements over 3-5 years at ~110 positions distributed across gradients of forest structure resulting from wildfires and mechanical thinning. We combine Snowtography with lidar snapshots of forest and snow to train a high-resolution snow model and run it for 6 years to quantify how forest structure regulates snowpack and snowmelt. These study sites represent a climate gradient from lower/warmer ephemeral snowpack (~2,100 m asl) to higher/colder seasonal snowpack (~2,800 m asl). Forest cover reduced snowpack and snowmelt through canopy sublimation. Forest advanced snowmelt timing at lower/warmer sites but delayed it at higher/colder sites. Within canopy gaps, shaded cool edges had the greatest peak snow water equivalent (SWE). Surprisingly, sunny/warm gap edges produced more snowmelt than cool edges, because high radiation melted snow quickly, reducing exposure to sublimation. Therefore, peak SWE is not an ideal proxy for snowmelt volume from ephemeral snowpacks, which are becoming more prevalent due to warming. The results imply that forest management can influence the amount and timing of snowmelt, and that there may be decision trade-offs between enhancing forest resilience through delayed snowmelt and maximizing snowmelt volumes for downstream water resources. Agrivoltaic systems, a fusion of agriculture and photovoltaic (PV) technology, have emerged as a sustainable solution to optimise land use by enabling simultaneous solar energy and agricultural harvesting. The experiments were conducted in a polytunnel greenhouse in Kfar Qara, Israel, deploying three types of semi-transparent solar PV panels—bifacial glass-encapsulated silicon, bifacial plastic-encapsulated silicon, and semi-transparent organic photovoltaics (OPVs) installed above the plant canopy. The impact of these PV treatments on cucumber crops was evaluated and juxtaposed against a control greenhouse with no panels, over the spring season from February to June 2022. Key growth and yield metrics were recorded during 17 harvests between April 10 and June 2, 2022. The findings revealed a negligible decline in crop yield across PV panel treatments compared to the control. Notably, the control and glass-encapsulated silicon PV treatments demonstrated an increase in yield, growth, and fruit quality. Moreover, the glass-encapsulated silicon PV panels outperformed the plastic-encapsulated and OPV module power conversion in the high heat and humidity of the greenhouse environment. This study accentuates the potential of integrating glass-encapsulated silicon PV panels in polytunnel greenhouses, heralding a promising avenue for bolstering agrivoltaic applications by ensuring a harmonious balance between agricultural yield and electrical energy production. Low-coverage line-belt-pattern protective forests offer significant advantages in terms of wind and sand control measures. It is important to study the windbreak effectiveness of sand-fixing forests with different spacing for the construction and optimization of plant shelterbelt configurations. The effect of plant spacing on the flow field around a row of trees was investigated using the k-ε turbulence model coupled with the porous media model. In order to accurately simplify the complex and stochastic plant constitutive features, we simplify the plant canopy to a circular platform geometry, which introduces a porous media model, and the plant trunk is simulated as a solid cylinder. The simulation results show that windbreaks only affect wind profiles up to 1.25-times the height of the tree; on the leeward side of the canopy, large-spaced shelterbelts provide greater protection in the near-wake zone, while small-spaced shelterbelts are more effective at reducing velocity in the re-equilibration zone. The flow field recovery properties of the trunk and canopy indicate that the canopy wake zone is longer. In this study, we also quantitatively analyze the relationship between average wind protection effectiveness as a function of plant spacing and streamwise distance from the leeward side of the canopy, and the given parameterized scheme shows a power exponential relationship between wind protection effectiveness and plant spacing and a logarithmic relationship with streamwise distance. The leaf area index (LAI) is one of the core parameters reflecting the growth status of vegetation. The continuous long-term observation of the LAI is key when assessing the dynamic changes in the energy exchange of ecosystems and the vegetation's response indicators to climate change. The errors brought about by non-standard operations in manual LAI measurements hinder the further research utilization of this parameter. The long-term automatic LAI observation network is helpful in reducing errors from manual measurements. To further test the applicability of automatic LAI observation instruments in forest environments, this study carried out comparative validation research of the LAI-NOS (LAI automatic network observation system) at the Wanglang Mountain Ecological Remote Sensing Comprehensive Observation Station, China, comparing it with the results measured by the LAI-2200 Plant Canopy Analyzer (LI-COR, Lincoln, NE, USA), the LAI-probe handheld instrument, and a fisheye lens digital camera (DHP method). Instead of using the original "smoothest window" method, a new method, the "sunrise–sunset" method, is used to extract daily LAI-NOS LAI, and the corresponding confidence level is used to filter the data. The results of the data analysis indicate the following: LAI-NOS has a high data stability. The automatically acquired daily data between two consecutive days has a small deviation and significant correlations. Single-angle/multi-angle LAI measurement results of the LAI-NOS have good correlations with the LAI-2200 (R2 = 0.512/R2 = 0.652), the LAI-probe (R2 = 0.692/R2 = 0.619), and the DHP method (R2 = 0.501/R2 = 0.394). The daily LAI obtained from the improved method, when compared to the original method, both show the same vegetation growth trend. However, the improved method has a smaller dispersion. This study confirms the stability and accuracy of automatic observation instruments in mountainous forests, demonstrating the distinct advantages of automatic measurement instruments in the long-term ground observation of LAIs. With the improvements in mechanization levels, it is difficult for the traditional intercropping planting patterns to meet the needs of mechanization. In the traditional maize‒soybean intercropping, maize has a shading effect on soybean, which leads to a decrease in soybean photosynthetic capacity and stem bend resistance, resulting in severe lodging, which greatly affects soybean yield. In this study, we investigated the effects of three intercropping ratios (four rows of maize and four rows of soybean; four rows of maize and six rows of soybean; six rows of maize and six rows of soybean) and two planting patterns (narrow-wide row planting pattern of 80–50 cm and uniform-ridges planting pattern of 65 cm) on soybean canopy photosynthesis, stem bending resistance, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and related enzyme activities. Compared with the uniform-ridge planting pattern, the narrow-wide row planting pattern significantly increased the LAI, PAR, light transmittance and compound yield by 6.06%, 2.49%, 5.68% and 5.95%, respectively. The stem bending resistance and cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and PAL, TAL and CAD activities were also significantly increased. Compared with those under the uniform-ridge planting pattern, these values increased by 7.74%, 3.04%, 8.42%, 9.76%, 7.39%, 10.54% and 8.73% respectively. Under the three intercropping ratios, the stem bending resistance, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin content and PAL, TAL, and CAD activities in the M4S6 treatment were significantly greater than those in the M4S4 and M6S6 treatments. Compared with the M4S4 treatment, these variables increased by 12.05%, 11.09%, 21.56%, 11.91%, 18.46%, 16.1%, and 16.84%, respectively, and compared with the M6S6 treatment, they increased by 2.06%, 2.53%, 2.78%, 2.98%, 8.81%, 4.59%, and 4.36%, respectively. The D-M4S6 treatment significantly improved the lodging resistance of soybean and weakened the negative impact of intercropping on soybean yield. Therefore, based on the planting pattern of narrow-wide row maize‒soybean intercropping planting pattern, four rows of maize and six rows of soybean were more effective at improving the lodging resistance of soybean in the semiarid region of western China. Accurate retrieval of canopy nutrient content has been made possible using visible-to-shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectroscopy. While this strategy has often been tested on closed green plant canopies, little is known about how nutrient content estimates perform when applied to pixels not dominated by photosynthetic vegetation (PV). In such cases, contributions of bare soil (BS) and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), may significantly and nonlinearly reduce the spectral features relied upon for nutrient content retrieval. We attempted to define the loss of prediction accuracy under reduced PV fractional cover levels. To do so, we utilized VSWIR imaging spectroscopy data from the Global Airborne Observatory (GAO) and a large collection of lab-calibrated field samples of nitrogen (N) content collected across numerous crop species grown in several farming regions of the United States. Fractional cover values of PV, NPV, and BS were estimated from the GAO data using the Automated Monte Carlo Unmixing algorithm (AutoMCU). Errors in prediction from a partial least squares N model applied to the spectral data were examined in relation to the fractional cover of the unmixed components. We found that the most important factor in the accuracy of the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model is the fraction of photosynthetic vegetation (PV) cover, with pixels greater than 60% cover performing at the optimal level, where the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) peaks to 0.66 for PV fractions of more than 60% and bare soil (BS) fractions of less than 20%. Measuring canopy height is important for phenotyping as it has been identified as the most relevant parameter for the fast determination of plant mass and carbon stock, as well as crop responses and their spatial variability. In this work, we develop a low-cost tool for measuring plant height proximally based on an ultrasound sensor for flexible use in static or on-the-go mode. The tool was lab-tested and field-tested on crop systems of different geometry and spacings: in a static setting on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and in an on-the-go setting on chia (Salvia hispanica L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum durum Desf.). Cross-correlation (CC) or a dynamic time-warping algorithm (DTW) was used to analyze and correct shifts between manual and sensor data in chia. Sensor data were able to reproduce with minor shifts in canopy profile and plant status indicators in the field when plant heights varied gradually in narrow-spaced chia (R2 = 0.98), faba bean (R2 = 0.96), and wheat (R2 = up to 0.99). Abrupt height changes resulted in systematic errors in height estimation, and short-scale variations were not well reproduced (e.g., R2 in widely spaced chia was 0.57 to 0.66 after shifting based on CC or DTW, respectively)). In alfalfa, ultrasound data were a better predictor than NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for Leaf Area Index and biomass (R2 from 0.81 to 0.84). Maps of ultrasound-determined height showed that clusters were useful for spatial management. The good performance of the tool both in a static setting and in the on-the-go setting provides flexibility for the determination of plant height and spatial variation of plant responses in different conditions from natural to managed systems. Among grapevine yellows, Bois noir (BN), associated with 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani', represents the biggest threat in the main wine-growing areas worldwide, causing significant losses in berry quality and yields. BN epidemiology involves multiple plant hosts and several insect vectors, making considerably complex the development of effective management strategies. Since application of insecticides on the grapevine canopy is not effective to manage vectors, BN management includes an integrated approach based on treatments to the canopy to make the plant more resistant to the pathogen and/or inhibit the vector feeding, and actions on reservoir plants to reduce possibilities that the vector reaches the grapevine and transmit the phytoplasma. Feutrell's early, a renowned citrus variety, holds a pivotal role in Pakistan's agricultural economy, contributing significantly to export revenues and playing a vital part in sustaining the country's citrus industry. Despite their historical significance, local rootstocks in Pakistan encounter challenges such as susceptibility to diseases, limited adaptability to changing climates, and hindered overall productivity, necessitating a search for alternative solutions. This study assessed the performance of exotic citrus rootstocks at the Postgraduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Six treatments, including four exotic rootstocks (Rough lemon, Cleoptera mandarin, Troyer citrange, Carrizo citrange, Cox mandarin, Poncirus trifoliata), were budded with Feutrell's early. Statistical analysis revealed good compatibility in scion/rootstock ratio. Rough lemon exhibited maximum plant height and canopy volume. Cox mandarin, especially in combination with Feutrell's early, demonstrated superior results in various parameters, suggesting its potential to replace traditional rootstocks and address challenges faced by the citrus industry in Pakistan. Summary: How plants distribute biomass among organs influences resource acquisition, reproduction and plant–plant interactions, and is essential in understanding plant ecology, evolution, and yield production in agriculture. However, the genetic mechanisms regulating allocation responses to the environment are largely unknown.We studied recombinant lines of wheat (Triticum spp.) grown as single plants under sunlight and simulated canopy shade to investigate genotype‐by‐environment interactions in biomass allocation to the leaves, stems, spikes, and grains. Size‐corrected mass fractions and allometric slopes were employed to dissect allocation responses to light limitation and plant size.Size adjustments revealed light‐responsive alleles associated with adaptation to the crop environment. Combined with an allometric approach, we demonstrated that polymorphism in the DELLA protein is associated with the response to shade and size. While a gibberellin‐sensitive allelic effect on stem allocation was amplified when plants were shaded, size‐dependent effects of this allele drive allocation to reproduction, suggesting that the ontogenetic trajectory of the plant affects the consequences of shade responses for allocation.Our approach provides a basis for exploring the genetic determinants underlying investment strategies in the face of different resource constraints and will be useful in predicting social behaviours of individuals in a crop community. The capture of incoming solar radiation under unlimited light, water, and nutrient conditions by plant canopies and converting it into biomass has been described as radiation use efficiency (RUE). RUE has been computed as a function of biomass accumulation and intercepted photosynthetically active radiation without considering the loss of photoassimilates due to respiratory processes. This study evaluated the RUE in diploid potato crop (Solanum phureja Juz. et Buk.) across six experiments in Colombia. Total biomass was measured during the crop season from the early vegetative stage through maturity. However, this proposal involves not only the total biomass accumulated concerning the amount of photosynthetically active radiation intercepted but also took into account the losses by respiration, following Thornley respiration approach. This research demonstrates that the RUE is not a constant value as the respiration process leads to RUE values being variable in a non-linear way over time. The daily RUE simulation, conducted through an interpolation process, revealed significant variation from emergence to the end of the cycle. This indicates an error in assuming a constant RUE throughout the entire growth period, particularly in assessing its physiological impact across the entire growth and development crop cycle. Amorphophallus muelleri Blume, locally called Iles-iles or porang, has become a new commercial commodity in Indonesia. The tuber, as the most economic value, contains high glucomannan a long-chain carbohydrate widely used in the food, beverage, and medicine industries. It has been speculated that the high variation in yield among the farmers is due to different planting materials origin and soil organic carbon (SOC) content. This research was carried out to evaluate the growth and yield of A. muelleri from other planting materials origin and the levels of SOC. The research was carried out at IPB Experimental Station, Leuwikopo Bogor, Indonesia from December 2021 to August 2022, using a nested design, The main plot was the level of SOC (2, 3, 4, and 6%), and the sub-plot was planting material origins (seeds, bulbils, and tubers from leaf cuttings). Results showed that SOC status determined growth and yield. where it significantly affected plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, canopy width, bulbils number, corm fresh weight, and corm diameter. The SOC at a level of 6% stimulated the highest plant growth and yield. Planting materials also determined the growth and yield of A. muelleri. Plants originating from bulbils produced the highest yields, followed by tuber from leaf cuttings and seeds. It is recommended to plant bulbils accompanied by maintaining SOC at a level of 6%. Monitoring rice plant growth is crucial for evaluating rice field management and yield production. RGB images are generated from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) with RGB cameras. UAVs produce high spatial and temporal resolution, while RGB cameras are commonly used and cheap. The objectives of this study were to identify the spectral pattern of rice plant growth and to estimate yield production based on the spectral value of RGB images. The spectral pattern and yield estimation were analyzed using confidence interval (CI) and regression, respectively. Results show that spectral pattern during the vegetative until ripening stage forms a concave with minimum value in the generative stage and decreases towards the harvest stage. Based on the CI value, the high interval between upper and lower happened in the vegetative and ripening stages while the low interval happened in the generative stage. The high CI in the vegetative and ripening stages was due to the soil background and complexity of the rice plant canopy, respectively while the low CI in the generative stage was due to the homogeneous response of the leaf canopy. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of both organic and inorganic nitrogen fertilizers on the intensity and epidemiological components of Cercospora leaf spot across three different canopies of cotton plants, specifically the variety DP ACALA 90, under field conditions. Fertilizers used in the study included bovine manure, Jatropha curcas seedcake, poultry manure, and urea (the latter serving as a control). These were applied at 20 days after plant emergence and then during the flowering stage until the total nitrogen (N) dose reached 50, 100, 150, or 200 kg N per hectare. The incidence and severity of the disease were assessed starting at the reproductive stage B1 (the first visible flower bud) across the lower, middle, and upper canopies of four cotton plants, with six evaluations conducted over time. To calculate the initial inoculum (Y0) and the disease progress rate (r), the Exponential, Gompertz, and Logistic models were employed based on temporal data. The study was designed as a randomized complete block with a 4x4 factorial arrangement (fertilizer type x dose), and mean comparisons were made using Tukey's test (p ≤ 0.05). It was found that disease intensity within each canopy level varied in response to the type of nitrogen source and the applied dose, with the severity of the disease (including the area under the disease progress curve) being particularly influenced. A significant interaction between the type of fertilizer and the dose regarding the intensity of Cercospora leaf spot was observed. The Exponential model most accurately depicted the disease's temporal progression. Notably, poultry manure and urea were the fertilizers that most adversely influenced the intensity and initial inoculum (Y0) of Cercospora leaf spot across the various canopies of the cotton plants. Background and Aims Variation in architectural traits related to the spatial and angular distribution of leaf area can have considerable impacts on canopy-scale fluxes contributing to water-use efficiency (WUE). These architectural traits are frequent targets for crop improvement and for improving the understanding and predictions of net ecosystem carbon and water fluxes. Methods A three-dimensional, leaf-resolving model along with a range of virtually generated hypothetical canopies were used to quantify interactions between canopy structure and WUE by examining its response to variation of leaf inclination independent of leaf azimuth, canopy heterogeneity, vegetation density and physiological parameters. Key Results Overall, increasing leaf area index (LAI), increasing the daily-averaged fraction of leaf area projected in the sun direction (G avg) via the leaf inclination or azimuth distribution and increasing homogeneity had a similar effect on canopy-scale daily fluxes contributing to WUE. Increasing any of these parameters tended to increase daily light interception, increase daily net photosynthesis at low LAI and decrease it at high LAI, increase daily transpiration and decrease WUE. Isolated spherical crowns could decrease photosynthesis by ~60 % but increase daily WUE ≤130 % relative to a homogeneous canopy with equivalent leaf area density. There was no observed optimum in daily canopy WUE as LAI, leaf angle distribution or heterogeneity was varied. However, when the canopy was dense, a more vertical leaf angle distribution could increase both photosynthesis and WUE simultaneously. Conclusions Variation in leaf angle and density distributions can have a substantial impact on canopy-level carbon and water fluxes, with potential trade-offs between the two. These traits might therefore be viable target traits for increasing or maintaining crop productivity while using less water, and for improvement of simplified models. Background: Greenhouse vertical farming under natural sunlight is an alternative farming technique that grows crops in a stacking column and extends in a vertical direction. Sunlight availability is one of the crucial factors for crop development in vertical farming. Therefore, this investigation aimed to examine the effect of sunlight availability on lettuce growth and yields at different levels of vertical shelves. Methods: Six shelves were constructed with three levels: upper, middle and lower levels. Lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) as 'Baby Cos' and 'Green Oak' at 14 days after sowing were planted on the three levels. The photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was recorded, and the PPFD values were then converted to the daily light integral (DLI). Plant height and canopy width were measured three times at 14, 21 and 28 days after transplanting. At maturity, fresh weight (FW) was directly monitored after harvest. Results: The results showed that the highest PPFD and DLI values were found at the upper level (PPFD 697 mmol m-2 s-1 and DLI 29 mol m-2 d-1) in comparison to the middle (PPFD 391 mmol m-2 s-1 and DLI 16 mol m-2 d-1) and lower (PPFD 322 mmol m-2 s-1 and DLI 13 mol m-2 d-1) levels. The lowest plant height and canopy width values were observed on the upper levels for both lettuce varieties during the three measurement dates. The middle ('Baby Cos' = 123.8 g plant-1 and 'Green Oak' = 190.7 g plant-1) and lower ('Baby Cos' = 92.9 g plant-1 and 'Green Oak' = 203.7 g plant-1) levels had the higher values of FW in comparison to the upper level ('Baby Cos' = 84.5 g plant-1 and 'Green Oak' = 97.3 g plant-1). The values of light use efficiency (LUE) showed an increased trend from the upper to lower levels in both varieties, with values of 'Baby Cos' of 0.10 g mol-1 in the upper level, 0.28 g mol-1 in the middle level and 0.26 g mol-1 in the lower level and 'Green Oak' of 0.12 g mol-1 in the upper level, 0.44 g mol-1 in the middle level and 0.57 g mol-1 in the lower level. A Fixed Spray Delivery System (FSDS) is a new pesticide system derived from a drip irrigation system. Briefly, it consists of a series of emitters (nozzles) - mounted on a pipeline positioned within the plant canopy - and a pumping station, that can be either fixed or mobile. The FSDS can be used for applying pesticide in bush and tree crops and offers several advantages for farmers such as the possibility to spray at the most appropriate conditions (e.g., low wind speed, right temperature/humidity, and immediately after a rain, etc.), the drastic reduction of tractors use and of related manpower. The adoption of this system could be of primary importance in steep slope areas, where it can represent an alternative to conventional spray application techniques, it can mitigate workers’ exposure to pesticides (e.g., when spray application is carried out manually due to inaccessibility of the area with tractors) and avoid safety risks for tractor drivers (e.g., where spray applications are carried out using sprayers connected to tracked tractors and risk of overturning is high). FSDS operates at a pressure and flow rate close to the drip irrigation one, resulting in reduced energy use, compared to conventional Pesticide Application Equipment (PAE), and significantly contributing to carbon footprint mitigation. Due to these positive aspects, the interest in FSDS increased across EU Countries. Since these systems are PAE, they shall comply with the EU Directive on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides (2009/128/EC), article 8, and shall be subjected to a periodical mandatory inspection for their functionality. At present, no specific EN or ISO Standards concerning the requirements and methods for the functional inspection of FSDS are available. Trying to cover this gap, a first draft proposal about the components of this system that deserves to be subjected to functional inspection has been made. Furthermore, the required functional limits for the different components and the methods to carry out their inspection were investigated and proposed. The present document is intended to provide a first draft set of technical indications about the steps to be followed for carrying out a functional inspection of FSDS. Many cities are working to increase greenspace and tree canopy to improve residents' quality of life. However, from an environmental justice perspective, it is important to ask where greenspace is increased and whose quality of life is improved. This research investigates the environmental justice implications of urban tree canopy distribution and change in Philadelphia. Specifically, we conduct three distinct, yet interrelated analyses: (1) an evaluation of the environmental justice implications of Philadelphia's 2018 tree canopy distribution, (2) a description of tree canopy change in the city between 2008 and 2018, and (3) an assessment of the environmental justice implications of tree canopy change during this period. Thus, our study expands upon previous urban forest environmental justice research by evaluating the environmental justice implications of current tree canopy distribution and temporal changes in tree canopy coverage. We found that neighborhoods in Philadelphia with higher proportions of racialized minorities had lower levels of tree canopy coverage in 2018 and were less likely to gain tree canopy between 2008 and 2018. We argue that cities should use past changes in urban tree canopy, along with an understanding of the current distribution, to make future cities more green and just. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The disposition of spectral solar irradiance in plant canopies is crucially important to understand processes such as photolysis of molecules amenable to absorbing actinic light. Thus, one objective of this study is to evaluate the most commonly applied radiative transfer approaches to estimate spectral irradiance as a function of plant canopy depth. Eight radiative transfer approaches are ascertained. Another objective is to determine the impacts of the spectral resolution assumed in radiative transfer calculations and model choice on key processes such as canopy absorption and reflection of irradiance. By comparing results from broadband‐only and spectrally‐resolved canopy radiative transfer, we aim to quantitatively determine the uncertainties associated with failing to resolve the sunlight spectra. We determine the optimal spectral resolution required to estimate canopy radiative transfer results such as air‐chemistry‐specific quantities related to photolysis of a select group of molecules. In addition, we evaluate techniques for binning leaf and soil optical properties. Results showed that high spectral resolution is ideally desired to compute photolysis of molecules such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, nitrate radical, nitrous acid, and formaldehyde. For in‐canopy photolysis of molecules, a waveband resolution of at least 10 nm is sufficient to obtain accurate estimates for most photochemical reactions. Positive reaction‐dependent uncertainties in canopy‐mean relative photolysis values for individual molecules can be as high as 30% compared to estimates derived with broad‐band solar irradiance.

Inconsistent yield of subtropical table grape across seasons is often associated with low carbohydrate reserves during flowering. In an attempt to increase TNC and thus yield, sucrose was injected into treated trunks during periods of high carbohydrate demand (i.e., between budburst and flowering). Total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) concentration dynamics were assessed in the grapevine root and trunk tissues of both control and treated vines. In the control (untreated) vines, the TNC concentration in root and trunk tissues was 13.5% and 7.5% w/dw at leaf fall and 7.2% and 3.7% w/dw at flowering, respectively. This decrease in carbohydrate reserve was estimated at ~500 g/vine and is associated with the re-establishment of the plant canopy in early spring. Carbohydrate reserves remained stable or rose slightly between flowering and harvest and recovered between crop harvest and leaf fall. In treated vines, a constantly pressurised low-pressure in situ trunk injection system (69 kPa) with 5% w/v sucrose solution over 45 days from budburst (to flowering), in each of the two seasons, delivered a widely variable amount of sucrose into each vine with variation ascribed to the amount of internal dead wood in the trunk. In the best circumstances, an average of 150 g sucrose/vine/season was injected, and sucrose-injected vines had higher trunk TNC reserve (4.1% compared to 3.6% w/dw in the control) at flowering. A δ13C (‰) analysis confirmed the presence of injected sucrose in the shoot at flowering. However, the correlation between the amount of loaded sucrose and δ13C in young shoot tissue was poor, indicative of variable partitioning patterns. Inflorescence number per vine and berry yield were markedly higher in sucrose-injected vines, but differences were not significant given the high variation between vines. The addition of KCl to the sucrose solution and use of the healthy vines are recommended to increase sucrose loading using the injection method to address inconsistent yielding of subtropical table grape. In order to mitigate the impact of particulate pollutants in Nanjing Sample Industrial Park, it is imperative to simulate the wind field and pollutant dispersion inside the park. Therefore, a CFD-DPM study was employed to simulate the wind field and pollutant dispersion with an accurate landform model. A large eddy simulation was utilized for calculating wind flow distribution inside the park, which is more suitable than Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations (RANS). The physical model of the plant canopy was incorporated to assess its influence on the wind field and particulate pollutants through drag, buoyancy, and deposition effects. Using this method, the distributions of the wind field, and contaminant and the sensitivity tests were obtained by means of calculating a number of research cases under different meteorological conditions. In the numerical results, the wind field was obstructed by the plant canopy, resulting in near-ground uniformity under unstable weather conditions. The distribution of particulate pollutants was influenced not only by the drag and buoyancy effects but also by deposition, which caused an accumulation of particulate pollutants on the windward side of the canopy under unstable weather conditions. The sensitivity tests were performed by comparing the concentrations of particulate pollutants under various conditional settings. The canopy regions can remove the particulate pollutant by 50% under stable weather conditions.
