1. Influence of High-Performance Image-to-Image Translation Networks on Clinical Visual Assessment and Outcome Prediction: Utilizing Ultrasound to MRI Translation in Prostate Cancer

Abstract: Purpose: This study examines the core traits of image-to-image translation (I2I) networks, focusing on their effectiveness and adaptability in everyday clinical settings. Methods: We have analyzed data from 794 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), using ten prominent 2D/3D I2I networks to convert ultrasound (US) images into MRI scans. We also introduced a new analysis of Radiomic features (RF) via the Spearman correlation coefficient to explore whether networks with high performance (SSIM>85%) could detect subtle RFs. Our study further examined synthetic images by 7 invited physicians. As a final evaluation study, we have investigated the improvement that are achieved using the synthetic MRI data on two traditional machine learning and one deep learning method. Results: In quantitative assessment, 2D-Pix2Pix network substantially outperformed the other 7 networks, with an average SSIM~0.855. The RF analysis revealed that 76 out of 186 RFs were identified using the 2D-Pix2Pix algorithm alone, although half of the RFs were lost during the translation process. A detailed qualitative review by 7 medical doctors noted a deficiency in low-level feature recognition in I2I tasks. Furthermore, the study found that synthesized image-based classification outperformed US image-based classification with an average accuracy and AUC~0.93. Conclusion: This study showed that while 2D-Pix2Pix outperformed cutting-edge networks in low-level feature discovery and overall error and similarity metrics, it still requires improvement in low-level feature performance, as highlighted by Group 3. 2. Optimal disk packing of chloroplasts in plant cells

Abstract: Photosynthesis is vital for the survival of entire ecosystems on Earth. While light is fundamental to this process, excessive exposure can be detrimental to plant cells. Chloroplasts, the photosynthetic organelles, actively move in response to light and self-organize within the cell to tune light absorption. These disk-shaped motile organelles must balance dense packing for enhanced light absorption under dim conditions with spatial rearrangements to avoid damage from excessive light exposure. Here, we reveal that the packing characteristics of chloroplasts within plant cells show signatures of optimality. Combining measurements of chloroplast densities and three-dimensional cell shape in the water plant Elodea densa, we construct an argument for optimal cell shape versus chloroplast size to achieve two targets: dense packing into a two-dimensional monolayer for optimal absorption under dim light conditions and packing at the sidewalls for optimal light avoidance. We formalize these constraints using a model for random close packing matched with packing simulations of polydisperse hard disks confined within rectangular boxes. The optimal cell shape resulting from these models corresponds closely to that measured in the box-like plant cells, highlighting the importance of particle packing in the light adaptation of plants. Understanding the interplay between structure and function sheds light on how plants achieve efficient photo adaptation. It also highlights a broader principle: how cell shape relates to the optimization of packing finite and relatively small numbers of organelles under confinement. This universal challenge in biological systems shares fundamental features with the mechanics of confined granular media and the jamming transitions in dense active and passive systems across various scales and contexts.

3. AI/ML Based Detection and Categorization of Covert Communication in IPv6 Network

Abstract: The flexibility and complexity of IPv6 extension headers allow attackers to create covert channels or bypass security mechanisms, leading to potential data breaches or system compromises. The mature development of machine learning has become the primary detection technology option used to mitigate covert communication threats. However, the complexity of detecting covert communication, evolving injection techniques, and scarcity of data make building machine-learning models challenging. In previous related research, machine learning has shown good performance in detecting covert communications, but oversimplified attack scenario assumptions cannot represent the complexity of modern covert technologies and make it easier for machine learning models to detect covert communications. To bridge this gap, in this study, we analyzed the packet structure and network traffic behavior of IPv6, used encryption algorithms, and performed covert communication injection without changing network packet behavior to get closer to real attack scenarios. In addition to analyzing and injecting methods for covert communications, this study also uses comprehensive machine learning techniques to train the model proposed in this study to detect threats, including traditional decision trees such as random forests and gradient boosting, as well as complex neural network architectures such as CNNs and LSTMs, to achieve detection accuracy of over 90\%. This study details the methods used for dataset augmentation and the comparative performance of the applied models, reinforcing insights into the adaptability and resilience of the machine learning application in IPv6 covert communication. In addition, we also proposed a Generative AI-assisted interpretation concept based on prompt engineering as a preliminary study of the role of Generative AI agents in covert communication.

4. Aging of colloidal gels in microgravity

Abstract: We study the aging of colloidal gels using light microscopy movies of depletion gels from the International Space Station. Under such microgravity conditions, we observe a slowdown in particle dynamics consistent with gel aging. Stronger attractive forces promote the formation of thicker gel strands over time. The samples are bidisperse, composed of particles with a size ratio 1.2. Larger particles experience stronger depletion forces, which lead to a large first-neighbor peak in the pair correlation function $g(r)$ due to the prevalence of large-large particle contacts. As the gel ages, small mobile particles are incorporated into the gel structure. The changes in gel structure correlate with a slow power-law decay in particle motion, observed over nearly two orders of magnitude of time scales in microgravity experiments. Additionally, through complementary ground-based experiments, we compare two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) images of depletion colloidal gels. While microgravity gel data are limited to 2D projections, ground-based data establish a correspondence between the 2D and 3D $g(r)$ peak heights. 5. Biological and Radiological Dictionary of Radiomics Features: Addressing Understandable AI Issues in Personalized Prostate Cancer; Dictionary Version PM1.0

Abstract: We investigate the connection between visual semantic features defined in PI-RADS and associated risk factors, moving beyond abnormal imaging findings, establishing a shared framework between medical and AI professionals by creating a standardized dictionary of biological/radiological RFs. Subsequently, 6 interpretable and seven complex classifiers, linked with nine interpretable feature selection algorithms (FSA) applied to risk factors, were extracted from segmented lesions in T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) multiparametric-prostate MRI sequences to predict the UCLA scores. We then utilized the created dictionary to interpret the best-predictive models. Combining T2WI, DWI, and ADC with FSAs including ANOVA F-test, Correlation Coefficient, and Fisher Score, and utilizing logistic regression, identified key features: The 90th percentile from T2WI, which captures hypo-intensity related to prostate cancer risk; Variance from T2WI, indicating lesion heterogeneity; shape metrics including Least Axis Length and Surface Area to Volume ratio from ADC, describing lesion shape and compactness; and Run Entropy from ADC, reflecting texture consistency. This approach achieved the highest average accuracy of 0.78, significantly outperforming single-sequence methods (p-value<0.05). 6. Scaffold-enabled high-resolution cryo-EM structure determination of RNA.

Abstract: Cryo-EM structure determination of protein-free RNAs has remained difficult with most attempts yielding low to moderate resolution and lacking nucleotide-level detail. These difficulties are compounded for small RNAs as cryo-EM is inherently more difficult for lower molecular weight macromolecules. Here we present a strategy for fusing small RNAs to a group II intron that yields high resolution structures of the appended RNA. We demonstrate this technology by determining the structures of the 86-nucleotide (nt) thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) riboswitch aptamer domain and the recently described 210-nt raiA bacterial non-coding RNA involved in sporulation and biofilm formation. In the case of the TPP riboswitch aptamer domain, the scaffolding approach allowed visualization of the riboswitch ligand binding pocket at 2.5 Å resolution. We also determined the structure of the ligand-free apo state and observe that the aptamer domain of the riboswitch adopts an open Y-shaped conformation in the absence of ligand. Using this scaffold approach, we determined the structure of raiA at 2.5 Å in the core. Our versatile scaffolding strategy enables efficient RNA structure determination for a broad range of small to moderate-sized RNAs, which were previously intractable for high-resolution cryo-EM studies.

7. Genetic and morphological shifts associated with climate change in a migratory bird.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Rapid morphological change is emerging as a consequence of climate change in many systems. It is intuitive to hypothesize that temporal morphological trends are driven by the same selective pressures that have established well-known ecogeographic patterns over spatial environmental gradients (e.g., Bergmans and Allens rules). However, mechanistic understanding of contemporary morphological shifts is lacking. RESULTS: We combine morphological data and whole genome sequencing from a four-decade dataset in the migratory bird hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus) to test whether morphological shifts over time are accompanied by genetic change. Using genome-wide association, we identify alleles associated with body size, bill length, and wing length. Shifts in morphology and concordant shifts in morphology-associated alleles over time would support a genetic basis for the observed changes in morphology over recent decades, potentially an adaptive response to climate change. In our data, bill size decreases were paralleled by genetic shifts in bill size-associated alleles. On the other hand, alleles associated with body size showed no shift in frequency over time. CONCLUSIONS: Together, our results show mixed support for evolutionary explanations of morphological response to climate change. Temporal shifts in alleles associated with bill size support the hypothesis that selection is driving temporal morphological trends. The lack of evidence for genetic shifts in body size alleles could be explained by a large role of plasticity or technical limitations associated with the likely polygenic architecture of body size, or both. Disentangling the mechanisms responsible for observed morphological response to changing environments will be vital for predicting future organismal and population responses to climate change.

8. Steering research on mRNA splicing in cancer towards clinical translation.

Abstract: Splicing factors are affected by recurrent somatic mutations and copy number variations in several types of haematologic and solid malignancies, which is often seen as prima facie evidence that splicing aberrations can drive cancer initiation and progression. However, numerous spliceosome components also moonlight in DNA repair and other cellular processes, making their precise role in cancer difficult to pinpoint. Still, few would deny that dysregulated mRNA splicing is a pervasive feature of most cancers. Correctly interpreting these molecular fingerprints can reveal novel tumour vulnerabilities and untapped therapeutic opportunities. Yet multiple technological challenges, lingering misconceptions, and outstanding questions hinder clinical translation. To start with, the general landscape of splicing aberrations in cancer is not well defined, due to limitations of short-read RNA sequencing not adept at resolving complete mRNA isoforms, as well as the shallow read depth inherent in long-read RNA-sequencing, especially at single-cell level. Although individual cancer-associated isoforms are known to contribute to cancer progression, widespread splicing alterations could be an equally important and, perhaps, more readily actionable feature of human cancers. This is to say that in addition to repairing mis-spliced transcripts, possible therapeutic avenues include exacerbating splicing aberration with small-molecule spliceosome inhibitors, targeting recurrent splicing aberrations with synthetic lethal approaches, and training the immune system to recognize splicing-derived neoantigens.

9. A link between rocky exoplanet composition and stellar age

Abstract: Interior compositions are key for our understanding of Earth-like exoplanets. The composition of the core can influence the presence of a magnetic dynamo and the strength of gravity on the planetary surface, both of which heavily impact thermal and possible biological processes and thus the habitability for life and its evolution on the planet. However, detailed measurements of the planetary interiors are extremely challenging for small exoplanets, and existing data suggest a wide diversity in planet compositions. Hitherto, only certain photospheric chemical abundances of the host stars have been considered as tracers to explain the diversity of exoplanet compositions. Here we present a homogeneous analysis of stars hosting rocky exoplanets, with ages between 2 and 14 Gyr, revealing a correlation between rocky exoplanet compositions and the ages of the planetary systems. Denser rocky planets are found around younger stars. This suggests that the compositional diversity of rocky exoplanets can be linked to the ages of their host stars. We interpret this to be a result of chemical evolution of stars in the Milky Way, which modifies the material out of which stars and planets form. The results imply that rocky planets which form today, at similar galactocentric radii, may have different formation conditions, and thus different properties than planets which formed several billion years ago, such as the Earth.

Abstract: The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. 11. A Novel Approach for Evaluating a Schoolwide Antiracist Curriculum Intervention

Abstract: This manuscript describes our effort to apply a novel approach to understanding student outcomes associated with a schoolwide antiracist intervention. We report a multimethod quantitative approach to evaluate a 10-week antiracist intervention designed and implemented by school staff by examining patterns of student intervention engagement and measures of key constructs that connect to antiracism, psychological well-being, and school connectedness. Our novel approach combines schoolwide surveys with smaller samples of daily diary participants, documenting variation in intervention engagement and examining postintervention outcomes. Our findings are limited by high attrition rates, small sample size, and data collection during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, our methods offer a promising transferable approach to evaluate school-based antiracist interventions by examining patterns and predictors of intervention engagement, as well as daily fluctuations in student experience throughout the intervention period.

Abstract: This pictorial aims to critically consider the nature of text-to-audio and text-to-music generative tools in the context of explainable AI. As a group of experimental musicians and researchers, we are enthusiastic about the creative potential of these tools and have sought to understand and evaluate them from perspectives of prompt creation, control, usability, understandability, explainability of the AI process, and overall aesthetic effectiveness of the results. One of the challenges we have identified that is not explicitly addressed by these tools is the inherent semantic gap in using text-based tools to describe something as abstract as music. Other gaps include explainability vs. useability, and user control and input vs. the human creative process. 13. Flow and clogging of capillary droplets

Abstract: Capillary droplets form due to surface tension when two immiscible fluids are mixed. We describe the motion of gravity-driven capillary droplets flowing through narrow constrictions and obstacle arrays in both simulations and experiments. Our new capillary deformable particle model recapitulates the shape and velocity of single oil droplets in water as they pass through narrow constrictions in microfluidic chambers. Using this experimentally validated model, we simulate the flow and clogging of single capillary droplets in narrow channels and obstacle arrays and find several important results. First, the capillary droplet speed profile is nonmonotonic as the droplet exits the narrow orifice, and we can tune the droplet properties so that the speed overshoots the terminal speed far from the constriction. Second, in obstacle arrays, we find that extremely deformable droplets can wrap around obstacles, which leads to decreased average droplet speed in the continuous flow regime and increased probability for clogging in the regime where permanent clogs form. Third, the wrapping mechanism causes the clogging probability in obstacle arrays to become nonmonotonic with surface tension $\Gamma$. At large $\Gamma$, the droplets are nearly rigid and the clogging probability is large since the droplets can not squeeze through the gaps between obstacles. With decreasing $\Gamma$, the clogging probability decreases as the droplets become more deformable. However, in the small-$\Gamma$ limit the clogging probability increases, since the droplets are extremely deformable and cause clogs as they wrap around the obstacles. The results from these studies are important for developing a predictive understanding of capillary droplet flows through complex and confined geometries.

14. Microstructure of polydisperse colloidal gels

Abstract: We use confocal microscopy to image colloidal gels formed from highly polydisperse particles. We suspend our polydisperse particles in a density matched solvent, and let the particles spontaneously aggregate through the van der Waals force. The particle size distribution $P(R)$ is roughly log-normal, with the largest particles more than 15 times the size of the smallest particles. The pairing of nearest neighbor particles is consistent with a null hypothesis that pairings are made randomly, that is, any two particle sizes have a probability of being neighbors consistent with their proportionality in $P(R)$. That being said, as expected, larger particles have more nearest neighbors than small ones. This leads to an over-representation of large particles in tetrahedral structures where four particles are mutually nearest neighbors, showing that large particles help provide rigidity to the gel structure. Abstract: PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract: Commercially impactful quantum algorithms such as quantum chemistry and Shor's algorithm require a number of qubits and gates far beyond the capacity of any existing quantum processor. Distributed architectures, which scale horizontally by networking modules, provide a route to commercial utility and will eventually surpass the capability of any single quantum computing module. Such processors consume remote entanglement distributed between modules to realize distributed quantum logic. Networked quantum computers will therefore require the capability to rapidly distribute high fidelity entanglement between modules. Here we present preliminary demonstrations of some key distributed quantum computing protocols on silicon T centres in isotopically-enriched silicon. We demonstrate the distribution of entanglement between modules and consume it to apply a teleported gate sequence, establishing a proof-of-concept for T centres as a distributed quantum computing and networking platform., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Abstract: Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). 24. Proven Runtime Guarantees for How the MOEA/D Computes the Pareto Front From the Subproblem Solutions

Abstract: The decomposition-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA/D) does not directly optimize a given multi-objective function $f$, but instead optimizes $N + 1$ single-objective subproblems of $f$ in a co-evolutionary manner. It maintains an archive of all non-dominated solutions found and outputs it as approximation to the Pareto front. Once the MOEA/D found all optima of the subproblems (the $g$-optima), it may still miss Pareto optima of $f$. The algorithm is then tasked to find the remaining Pareto optima directly by mutating the $g$-optima. In this work, we analyze for the first time how the MOEA/D with only standard mutation operators computes the whole Pareto front of the OneMinMax benchmark when the $g$-optima are a strict subset of the Pareto front. For standard bit mutation, we prove an expected runtime of $O(n N \log n + n^{n/(2N)} N \log n)$ function evaluations. Especially for the second, more interesting phase when the algorithm start with all $g$-optima, we prove an $\Omega(n^{(1/2)(n/N + 1)} \sqrt{N} 2^{-n/N})$ expected runtime. This runtime is super-polynomial if $N = o(n)$, since this leaves large gaps between the $g$-optima, which require costly mutations to cover. For power-law mutation with exponent $\beta \in (1, 2)$, we prove an expected runtime of $O\left(n N \log n + n^{\beta} \log n\right)$ function evaluations. The $O\left(n^{\beta} \log n\right)$ term stems from the second phase of starting with all $g$-optima, and it is independent of the number of subproblems $N$. This leads to a huge speedup compared to the lower bound for standard bit mutation. In general, our overall bound for power-law suggests that the MOEA/D performs best for $N = O(n^{\beta - 1})$, resulting in an $O(n^\beta \log n)$ bound. In contrast to standard bit mutation, smaller values of $N$ are better for power-law mutation, as it is capable of easily creating missing solutions.

25. Circle radius distributions determine random close packing density

Abstract: Circles of a single size can pack together densely in a hexagonal lattice, but adding in size variety disrupts the order of those packings. We conduct simulations which generate dense random packings of circles with specified size distributions, and measure the area fraction in each case. While the size distributions can be arbitrary, we find that for a wide range of size distributions the random close packing area fraction $\phi_{rcp}$ is determined to high accuracy by the polydispersity and skewness of the size distribution. At low skewness, all packings tend to a minimum packing fraction $\phi_0 \approx 0.840$ independent of polydispersity. In the limit of high skewness, $\phi_{rcp}$ becomes independent of skewness, asymptoting to a polydispersity-dependent limit. 26. Do High-Performance Image-to-Image Translation Networks Enable the Discovery of Radiomic Features? Application to MRI Synthesis from Ultrasound in Prostate Cancer

Abstract: This study investigates the foundational characteristics of image-to-image translation networks, specifically examining their suitability and transferability within the context of routine clinical environments, despite achieving high levels of performance, as indicated by a Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) exceeding 0.95. The evaluation study was conducted using data from 794 patients diagnosed with Prostate cancer. To synthesize MRI from Ultrasound images, we employed five widely recognized image to image translation networks in medical imaging: 2DPix2Pix, 2DCycleGAN, 3DCycleGAN, 3DUNET, and 3DAutoEncoder. For quantitative assessment, we report four prevalent evaluation metrics Mean Absolute Error, Mean Square Error, Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio. Moreover, a complementary analysis employing Radiomic features (RF) via Spearman correlation coefficient was conducted to investigate, for the first time, whether networks achieving high performance, SSIM greater than 0.85, could identify low-level RFs. The RF analysis showed 75 features out of 186 RFs were discovered via just 2DPix2Pix algorithm while half of RFs were lost in the translation process. Abstract: As representative of the water-energy-food nexus, fossil fuel development and industrial agriculture are rural industries that continue to expand and increasingly occur in the same areas. Being a top agricultural export county and the fossil fuel capital of California while ranking among the worst in the US for industrial pollution, Kern County is a poster child of rural nexus development and, thus, an essential place for initiating sustainability transitions. Such transitions rely on policy support and the adoption of methods by individuals and communities who may disagree with such changes. While sense of place and impact perceptions are recognized as playing critical roles in sustainability management, they have yet to be utilized in nexus research. A survey (N = 256) of the perceived impacts of nexus industries with place meaning and place attachment as possible drivers for perceptions was conducted in nexus industry pollution exposure risk zones. Factor analysis and bivariate correlations showed that place meaning and place attachment are drivers for perceptions while also being drivers for concern for changes in nexus industries. While perceptions of impacts indicated contested place meanings, participants strongly perceive the economy and environment as being in decline. To build support for sustainability policy, directing funds from Kern County's renewable energy industry to local sectors of society, implementation of regenerative agriculture, cooperative management, and nurturing place meaning as aligned with nature's restorative quality are important paths forward. These nexus management foci could strengthen place attachment, build trust in government, and repair environmental alienation.

Abstract: UMBRELLA is an open, large-scale IoT ecosystem deployed across South Gloucestershire, UK. It is intended to accelerate innovation across multiple technology domains. UMBRELLA is built to bridge the gap between existing specialised testbeds and address holistically real-world technological challenges in a System-of-Systems (SoS) fashion. UMBRELLA provides open access to real-world devices and infrastructure, enabling researchers and the industry to evaluate solutions for Smart Cities, Robotics, Wireless Communications, Edge Intelligence, and more. Key features include over 200 multi-sensor nodes installed on public infrastructure, a robotics arena with 20 mobile robots, a 5G network-in-a-box solution, and a unified backend platform for management, control and secure user access. The heterogeneity of hardware components, including diverse sensors, communication interfaces, and GPU-enabled edge devices, coupled with tools like digital twins, allows for comprehensive experimentation and benchmarking of innovative solutions not viable in lab environments. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of UMBRELLA's multi-domain architecture and capabilities, making it an ideal playground for Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) innovation. 36. The upwelling source depth distribution and its response to wind stress and stratification

Abstract: Coastal upwelling, driven by alongshore winds and characterized by cold sea surface temperatures and high upper-ocean nutrient content, is an important physical process sustaining some of the oceans' most productive ecosystems. To fully understand the ocean properties in eastern boundary upwelling systems, it is important to consider the depth of the source waters being upwelled, as it affects both the SST and the transport of nutrients toward the surface. Here, we construct an upwelling source depth distribution for parcels at the surface in the upwelling zone. We do so using passive tracers forced at the domain boundary for every model depth level to quantify their contributions to the upwelled waters. We test the dependence of this distribution on the strength of the wind stress and stratification using high-resolution regional ocean simulations of an idealized coastal upwelling system. We also present an efficient method for estimating the mean upwelling source depth. Furthermore, we show that the standard deviation of the upwelling source depth distribution increases with increasing wind stress and decreases with increasing stratification. These results can be applied to better understand and predict how coastal upwelling sites and their surface properties have and will change in past and future climates.

Abstract: Genetically encoded Ras biosensors have been instrumental in illuminating the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ras activity since the beginning of the imaging revolution of the early 21st century. In general, these sensors employ Ras sensing units coupled with fluorescent proteins. These biosensors have not only helped elucidate Ras signalling dynamics at the plasma membrane but also revealed novel roles for Ras signalling within subcellular compartments such as the Golgi apparatus. In this review, we discuss the different classes of biosensors used to measure Ras activity and discuss their importance in uncovering new roles for Ras activity in cellular signalling and behavior.

Abstract: Committing to an inclusive educational culture is not only ethically responsible, but it also allows students to reach their full potential. However, creating an inclusive culture presents challenges, especially when feeling included may mean different things to different people. This research examines marketing undergraduate students' inclusive experiences in the college of business. In doing so, it aims to understand inclusion from the student perspective and endeavors to create meaningful progress toward cultivating inclusion in education. The researchers approach this aim through interviewing and surveying students about their experiences. The findings indicate that individuals' differences, namely gender, play a role in shaping students' perceptions about inclusion. This research advances the literature in educational inclusion by building an understanding of how marketing students define and experience inclusion, offering insight into the role of gender in shaping inclusion perceptions, and discovering opportunities for professors to create an inclusive experience for their students.

Abstract: This study addresses critical gaps in automated lymphoma segmentation from PET/CT images, focusing on issues often overlooked in existing literature. While deep learning has been applied for lymphoma lesion segmentation, few studies incorporate out-of-distribution testing, raising concerns about model generalizability across diverse imaging conditions and patient populations. We highlight the need to compare model performance with expert human annotators, including intra- and inter-observer variability, to understand task difficulty better. Most approaches focus on overall segmentation accuracy but overlook lesion-specific measures important for precise lesion detection and disease quantification. To address these gaps, we propose a clinically relevant framework for evaluating deep segmentation networks. Using this lesion measure-specific evaluation, we assess the performance of four deep networks (ResUNet, SegResNet, DynUNet, and SwinUNETR) across 611 cases from multi-institutional datasets, covering various lymphoma subtypes and lesion characteristics. Beyond standard metrics like the Dice similarity coefficient, we evaluate clinical lesion measures and their prediction errors. We also introduce detection criteria for lesion localization and propose a new detection Criterion 3 based on metabolic characteristics. We show that networks perform better on large, intense lesions with higher metabolic activity. Finally, we compare network performance to physicians via intra- and inter-observer variability analyses, demonstrating that network errors closely resemble those made by experts, i.e., the small and faint lesions remain challenging for both humans and networks. This study aims to improve automated lesion segmentation's clinical relevance, supporting better treatment decisions for lymphoma patients. 50. Strategies to mitigate bias from time recording errors in pharmacokinetic studies

Abstract: Opportunistic pharmacokinetic (PK) studies have sparse and imbalanced clinical measurement data, and the impact of sample time errors is an important concern when seeking accurate estimates of treatment response. We evaluated an approximate Bayesian model for individualized pharmacokinetics in the presence of time recording errors (TREs), considering both a short and long infusion dosing pattern. We found that the long infusion schedule generally had lower bias in estimates of the pharmacodynamic (PD) endpoint relative to the short infusion schedule. We investigated three different design strategies for their ability to mitigate the impact of TREs: (i) shifting blood draws taken during an active infusion to the post-infusion period, (ii) identifying the best next sample time by minimizing bias in the presence of TREs, and (iii) collecting additional information on a subset of patients based on estimate uncertainty or quadrature-estimated variance in the presence of TREs. Generally, the proposed strategies led to a decrease in bias of the PD estimate for the short infusion schedule, but had a negligible impact for the long infusion schedule. Dosing regimens with periods of high non-linearity may benefit from design modifications, while more stable concentration-time profiles are generally more robust to TREs with no design modifications.
