Abstract

Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 −6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 −6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on 4.4 × 106 K ± → π 0 e ± ν e (K e3 ± ) and 2.3 × 106 K ± → π 0 μ±ν μ (K μ3 ± ) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the K e3 ± and K μ3 ± modes is also presented.

Abstract

The design of the prototype detector produced for the NA62 experiment by the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is described. This detector is based on thin-walled drift tubes (straws) and is intended for operation in vacuum. The resolution and efficiency of the drift tubes for this prototype detector have been measured on the CERN SPS beams with different front-end electronic systems, gas mixtures, and beam rates. Recommendations for the full-scale detector design are formulated.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment recorded a large sample of K+→μ+νμ decays in 2007. A peak search has been performed in the reconstructed missing mass spectrum. In the absence of a signal, limits in the range 2×10−6 to 10−5 have been set on the squared mixing matrix element |Uμ4|2 between muon and heavy neutrino states, for heavy neutrino masses in the range 300–375 MeV/ c2 . The result extends the range of masses for which upper limits have been set on the value of |Uμ4|2 in previous production search experiments.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment collected a large sample of charged kaon decays in 2007 with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons. A measurement of the $\pi^0$ electromagnetic transition form factor slope parameter from $1.11\times10^{6}$ fully reconstructed $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^0_D, \pi^0_D \to e^+ e^-\gamma$ events is reported. The measured value $a = (3.68 \pm 0.57)\times10^{-2}$ is in good agreement with theoretical expectations and previous measurements, and represents the most precise experimental determination of the slope in the time-like momentum transfer region., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; Revised version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

A study of the dynamics of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ has been performed on a sample of 232 decay candidates, with an estimated background of 17.4 ± 1.1 events, collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007. The results are combined with those from a measurement conducted by the NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN. The combined model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.965 ± 0.063 ) × 10 − 6 , and the combined branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a Chiral Perturbation Theory description is B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 1.003 ± 0.056 ) × 10 − 6 . A detailed comparison of the results with the previous measurements is performed.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected two data samples with minimum bias trigger conditions in 2003 and 2004. A measurement of the rate and dynamic properties of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ from these data sets based on 149 decay candidates with an estimated background of 15.5 ± 0.7 events is reported. The model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is measured to be B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.877 ± 0.089 ) × 10 − 6 , and the branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a particular Chiral Perturbation Theory description to be B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 0.910 ± 0.075 ) × 10 − 6 .

Abstract

A test of lepton flavour conservation in kaon rare decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. The improved upper limit on the rate of the lepton number violating decay K ± → π ∓ μ ± μ ± is established with the data sample collected in 2003–2004. A precision test of lepton flavour universality in kaon rare decays by the successor NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is reported. The helicity suppressed ratio R K = Γ(K ± → e ± ν )/Γ(K ± → μ ± ν ) is measured with a 0.4% precision using the data sample collected in 2007–2008 and is consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model. The main goal of the NA62 experiment is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν decay with 10% accuracy. This will be achieved by collecting ∼ 1013 K + decays in the fiducial volume. The NA62 estimated sensitivities to rare and forbidden decays of K + and π 0 , including lepton flavour and number violating modes, and the NA62 potential to improve on several experimental limits are discussed.

Abstract

A sample of $1.69\times 10^7$ fully reconstructed $\pi^0\to\gamma e^+e^-$ decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN in 2003--2004 is analysed to search for the dark photon ($A'$) production in the $\pi^0\to\gamma A'$ decay followed by the prompt $A'\to e^+e^-$ decay. No signal is observed, and an exclusion region in the plane of the dark photon mass $m_{A'}$ and mixing parameter $\varepsilon^2$ is established. The obtained upper limits on $\varepsilon^2$ are more stringent than the previous limits in the mass range $9~{\rm MeV}/c^2, Comment: Revised version accepted for publication in Physics Letter B

Abstract

A precision test of lepton flavour universality has been performed by measuring the ratio R K of kaon leptonic decay rates K + → e + ν and K + → μ + ν in a sample of 59 813 reconstructed K + → e + ν candidates with ( 8.71 ± 0.24 ) % background contamination. The result R K = ( 2.487 ± 0.013 ) × 10 − 5 is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Abstract

A sample of 3120 K ± → π ± μ + μ − decay candidates with ( 3.3 ± 0.7 ) % background contamination has been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, allowing a detailed study of the decay properties. The branching ratio was measured to be BR = ( 9.62 ± 0.25 ) × 10 − 8 . The form factor W ( z ) , where z = ( M μ μ / M K ) 2 , was parameterized according to several models. In particular, the slope of the linear form factor W ( z ) = W 0 ( 1 + δ z ) was measured to be δ = 3.11 ± 0.57 . Upper limits of 2.9 × 10 − 2 and 2.3 × 10 − 2 on possible charge asymmetry and forward–backward asymmetry were established at 90% CL. An upper limit BR ( K ± → π ∓ μ ± μ ± ) 1.1 × 10 − 9 was established at 90% CL for the rate of the lepton number violating decay.

Abstract

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the π0π0 invariant mass (M00) distribution from K±→π±π0π0 decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the ππ scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K±→π±π0π0 decays.

Abstract

Using the full data set of the NA48/2 experiment, the decay K ± → π ± e + e − γ is observed for the first time, selecting 120 candidates with 7.3 ± 1.7 estimated background events. With K ± → π ± π D 0 as normalisation channel, the branching ratio is determined in a model-independent way to be Br ( K ± → π ± e + e − γ , m e e γ > 260 MeV / c 2 ) = ( 1.19 ± 0.12 stat ± 0.04 syst ) × 10 −8 . This measured value and the spectrum of the e + e − γ invariant mass allow a comparison with predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract

The distribution of the K ± → π ± π + π − decays in the Dalitz plot has been measured by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS with a sample of 4.71 × 10 8 fully reconstructed events. With the standard Particle Data Group parameterization the following values of the slope parameters were obtained: g = ( − 21.134 ± 0.017 ) % , h = ( 1.848 ± 0.040 ) % , k = ( − 0.463 ± 0.014 ) % . The quality and statistical accuracy of the data have allowed an improvement in precision by more than an order of magnitude, and are such as to warrant a more elaborate theoretical treatment, including pion–pion rescattering, which is in preparation.

Abstract

Measured ratios of decay rates for Ke3/K2\pi, K\mu3/K2\pi and K\mu3/Ke3 are presented. These measurements are based on K^+- decays collected in a dedicated run in 2003 by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN. The results obtained are Ke3/K2\pi = 0.2470 +/- 0.0009 (stat) +/- 0.0004 (syst) and K\mu3/K2\pi = 0.1637 +/- 0.0006 (stat) +/- 0.0003 (syst). Using the PDG average for the K^+- -> \pi^+-\pi^0 normalisation mode, both values are found to be larger than the current values given by the Particle Data Book and lead to a larger magnitude of the |V_{us}| CKM element than previously accepted. When combined with the latest Particle Data Book value of |V_{ud}|, the result is in agreement with unitarity of the CKM matrix. In addition, a new measured value of K\mu3/Ke3 = 0.663 +/- 0.003(stat) +/- 0.001(syst) is compared to the semi-empirical predictions based on the latest form factor measurements., Comment: 20 pages, 5 tables, 10 figures. 19. Precision measurement of the ratio of the charged kaon leptonic decay rates

Abstract

A precision measurement of the ratio RK of the rates of kaon leptonic decays K+- --> e nu and K+- --> mu nu with the full data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007-2008 is reported. The result, obtained by analysing ~150000 reconstructed K+- --> e nu candidates with 11% background contamination, is RK = (2.488+-0.010)*10^{-5}, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation., Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B (18 January 2013). 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A possibility of a pion-pion collision experiment is discussed. This experiment permits one to perform very precise measurements of the s-wave scattering lengths at isospin state of I = 0 and 2 and a pion energy of 200 MeV-1 GeV. Quark-antiquark condensate, effective Lagrangian theory, and some features of the QCD lattice approach can be tested with very high precision.

Abstract

A sample of 65210 K ± → π 0 π 0 e ± ν (K e4 00 ) decay candidates with 1% background contamination has been collected in 2003-2004 by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS. A study of the differential rate provides the first measurement of the hadronic form factor variation in the plane (M 2 , M 2 ) and brings evidence for a cusp-like structure in the distribution of the squared π 0 π 0 invariant mass around $$ 4{m}_{\pi^{+}}^2 $$ . Exploiting a model independent description of this form factor, the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative decays, is obtained using the K ± → π 0 π 0 π ± decay mode as normalization. It is measured to be BR(K e4 00 ) = (2.552 ± 0.010stat ± 0.010syst ± 0.032ext) × 10−5, which improves the current world average precision by an order of magnitude while the 1.4% relative precision is dominated by the external uncertainty from the normalization mode. A comparison with the properties of the corresponding mode involving a π + π − pair (K e4 + − ) is also presented.

Abstract

Electron drift velocities have been measured in liquid krypton, pure and mixed with methane at different concentrations (1–10% in volume) versus electric field strength, and a possible effect of methane on electron lifetime has been investigated. While no effect on lifetime could be detected, since lifetimes were in all cases longer than what measurable, a very large increase in drift velocity (up to a factor 6) has been measured.

Abstract

We report the observation of the Ξ c ∗+ state decaying into Ξc0π+ with Ξ c 0 →Λ K 0 π + π − or ΛK−π+π+π−. We have observed 47±11 candidate events for the Ξ c ∗+ state and measured its mass to be 177.1±0.5±1.1 MeV/ c 2 above the Ξc0 mass. We have also measured the Ξc0 mass to be 2470.0±2.8±2.6 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

New measurements of the lifetime and mass of the Ξ c + are presented. The Ξ c + has been reconstructed through the two decay channels Ξ − π + π + and Σ + K − π + . The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The lifetime is measured to be 0.34 +0.07 −0.05 (stat.)±0.02 (syst.) ps while the mass is measured to be 2465.8±1.9 (stat.)±2.5 (syst.) MeV/c 2 .

Abstract

An amplitude analysis of the D+, Ds+ → π−π+π+ Dalitz plots is presented using data collected by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The data are fitted to a model consisting of a sum of relativistic Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes plus a flat non-resonant contribution. From the fit we derive decay fractions and relative phases. We also present measurements of Γ(D + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D + →K − π + π + ) and Γ(D s + →π − π + π + ) Γ(D s + →K − K + π + ) .

Abstract

The experiment with the prototype of liquid krypton electromagnetic calorimeter for the KEDR detector is described. The experiment was carried out at the VEPP-4M collider at the tagged photon beam. The tagged photons were obtained in the energy region 50–625 MeV using the ROKK-1M facility. The edges of the bremsstrahlung spectra were used for the energy resolution measurement in the high-energy region up to 4500 MeV. The energy resolution comparable with the resolution of the best crystal calorimeters and the excellent spatial resolution (∼1 mm) have been obtained. The results are in good agreement with the Monte-Carlo simulation.

Abstract

Charged hadronic five-body decays of D + and D s + mesons have been studied in the E687 photoproduction experiment at Fermilab. We report the first compelling evidence of the decay mode D + , D s + → π − π − β + π + π + and the measurements of the decays D + → K − π − π + π + π + , D s + → K − K + π − π + π + and D s + → φπ − π + π + . An analysis of the D + → K − π − π + π + π + resonance structure is also presented.

Abstract

We report on the results of a search for fourteen flavor changing neutral current, lepton number violating, or lepton family number violating decays of the charmed meson D + in the large charm sample recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. No evidence is seen for these rare and standard-model-forbidden decays, of the form D + → h ± l ∓ l + (with h = π , K and l = e , μ ); we determine 90% confidence level upper limits on their absolute branching fractions in the range (9–20) × 10 −5 .

Abstract

We report on the first statistically significant observation of the vector meson Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decay D+ → ρ0μ+ν. We measure the branching ratio of the decay mode D+ → ρ0μ+ν (plus possible unobserved γ from D+ → η′μ+ν, η′ → γρ0) with respect to the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν to be BR (D + → ρ 0 μ + ν) BR (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) = 0.079 ± 0.019 ( stat ) ± 0.013 ( syst ) . Data were collected by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

Results for the Cabibbo suppressed semileptonic decays D 0 → π − e + ν and D 0 → π − μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied) are reported by Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. We find 45.4 ± 13.3 events in the electron mode and 45.6 ± 11.8 in the muon mode. The relative branching ratio BR (D 0 →π − l + v) BR (D 0 →K − l + v) for the combined sample is measured to be 0.101 ± 0.020 (stat.) ± 0.003 (syst.) 14 .

Abstract

We report measurements of charm particle production asymmetries from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. An asymmetry in the rate of production of charm versus anticharm particles is expected to arise primarily from fragmentation effects. We observe statistically significant asymmetries in the photoproduction of D+, D ∗+ and D0 mesons and find small (but statistically weak) asymmetries in the production of the Ds+ meson and the Λc+ baryon. Our inclusive photoproduction asymmetries are compared to predictions from nonperturbative models of charm quark fragmentation.

Abstract

Charged particle (π/ K ) separation in the momentum range 0.5–0.7 GeV/ c using a new method of shape analysis of the signal from a liquid krypton ionization chamber has been studied experimentally. The detector has been exposed to pions and protons at the T11 test beam at CERN PS. The shape of preamplifier output signal has been recorded by a waveform digitizer and differentiated to obtain multiple measurements of induced current inside a 2 cm gap. Results on particle separation are presented and compared with a Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

We report on the study of charm baryons decaying to Λ c + : Λ c ★+ (2625) → Λ c + π + π − , Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − , Σ c 0 → Λ c + π − and Σ c ++ → Λ c + π + . We present a confirmation of the state Λ c ∗+ (2593) and determine its mass difference to be M ( Λ c ★+ (2593)) − M ( Λ c + ) = 309.2 ± 0.7 ± 0.3 MeV/ c 2 . We determine the lower limit on the resonant branching ratio to be BR (Λ c ★+ (2593) → Σ c π ± Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − ) > 0.51 (90% c.l.). We also measure the mass differences M ( Σ c 0 ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 166.6±0.5±0.6 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 167.6±0.6±0.6 MeV/ c 2 . Finally, we measure the relative photoproduction cross sections for Λ c ★+ and Σ c with respect to the (inclusive) photoproduction cross section for Λ c + .

Abstract

Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a high statistics sample of the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied). Our analysis yields a branching ratio of Γ (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ (D + → K − π + π + ) = 0.56±0.04±0.06 . The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be R ν = 1.74 ±0.27±0.28 and R 2 = 0.78±0.18±0.10, implying a polarization of Γ l Γ t = 1.20±0.13 ±0.13 for the electron decay. Finally, we report new limits on the decay modes D + → K − π + μ + ν (nonresonent) and D + → K ∗0 π 0 μ + ν .

Abstract

We report the results of a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays D+ → K+K−K+ and D+ → ΦK+, and the singly Cabibbo suppressed decays Ds+ → K+K−K+ and Ds+ → ΦK+. Our measurements are all consistent with zero branching ratio, and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the relative D+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) , BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(K − π + π + ) , and the relative Ds+ branching ratios: BR(ΦK + ) BR(Φπ + ) and BR(K + K − K + ) BR(Φπ + ) . The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Branching ratios and upper limits at 90% confidence level for D+ and Ds+ → K+π−π+ decays collected in Fermilab photoproduction experiment E-687 are reported. The D+ results are: Γ(D + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) = (7.2 ± 2.3 ± 1.7) × 10 −3 , Γ(D + → K ∗0 (892)π + ) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) , and Γ(D + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D + → K − π + π + ) . The Ds+ results are: Γ(D s + → K + π − π + ) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.28 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 , Γ(D s + → K ∗0 (892)π + Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 , and Γ(D s + → K + ϱ 0 (770)) Γ(D s + → Φ(1020)π + ) .

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the lifetime of the Ω c 0 baryon. The data were collected in the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measured lifetime is τ = 86−20+27(stat.) ± 28(syst.) fr. Thus the Ω c 0 has one of the shorter lifetimes among the weakly decaying singly charmed baryons.

Abstract

Amplitude analyses of the D+ and Ds+ → K+K−π+ Dalitz plots are presented using data collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Our data are fit to a model consisting of a sum of Breit-Wigner amplitudes for the intermediate two-body resonant decay modes. We extract decay fractions and relative phases. These results are used to infer new branching ratios for D+ → K+K−π+ inclusive as well as the Φπ+ and K ∗ (892) 0 K + channels.

Abstract

The NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN study rare kaon decays using the decay in flight technique. In this paper two selected topics will be presented: new measurements performed by the two experiments of the K±→ π±γγ decay which represents a stringent test of the Chiral Perturbation Theory and the measurement of the Branching Ratio of the very rare decay K+→π+νν¯${K^ + } \to {\pi ^ + }\nu \bar \nu $ at 10% level, that will provide a test of the Standard Model and possible extensions beyond it.

Abstract

We have made a new measurement of the branching ratio Γ(D + → K 0 K + ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) and the first measurement of Γ(D + → K 0 K ∗+ ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) . The data were accumulated in the 1990–1991 fixed target running period of Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. We measure Γ(D + → K 0 K + ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) = 0.25 ± 0.04 ± 0.02 and Γ(D + → K 0 K ∗+ ) Γ(D + → K 0 π + ) = 1.1 ± 0.3 ± 0.4 .

Abstract

The branching ratios of D 0 → K 0 K 0 and D0 → Ks0Ks0Ks0 relative to D 0 → K 0 π + π − are reported. The data were accumulated in the 1990–1991 fixed target running period of the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. Γ (D 0 → K 0 K 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − is measured to be 0.039±0.013±0.013 and Γ (D 0 →K s 0 K s 0 K s 0 )/Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − ) is measured to be 0.035±0.012±0.006. We also measure Γ (D 0 → K 0 π + π − /Γ (D 0 → K − π + ) to be 1.61±0.10±0.15.

We present evidence for the Ω c 0 in a new decay mode Ω c 0 → Σ + K − K − π + , for which we find 42.5 ± 8.8 events with a mass of 2699.9 ± 1.5 ± 2.5 MeV/c 2 . The data are from Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

The new results on charm from E687 photoproduction experiment are presented. They follow from very high statistic measurents and cover a wide variety of physics items in the charm sector. Charm photoproduction studies, very accurate lifetime measurements, analysis of several semi-leptonic decays and hadronic decays are discussed. Particular attention has been devoted to compare E687 results with other experiments.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for [ital CP]-violating decay rate asymmetries ([ital A][sub [ital CP]]) in the charm decay modes [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital [bar K]][sup *0][ital K][sup +], [ital D][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +], and [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]. Our measurements are all consistent with zero asymmetry: [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK][pi])=[minus]0.031[plus minus]0.068, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital K][sup *][ital K])=[minus]0.12[plus minus]0.13, [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([phi][pi])=0.066[plus minus]0.086, and [ital A][sub [ital CP]]([ital KK])=0.024[plus minus]0.084. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

We extract branching fractions and relative phases and compare them to the results obtained in other experiments. Although this model qualitatively reproduces many features of our data, statistically significant discrepancies are observed in some of our fits.

The fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a sample of approximately 90 events of the decay mode D+s→ φμ+ ν. The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be Rv=1.8±0.9±0.2 and R2= 1.1±0.8±0.1, implying a polarization of Г 1 /Г t = 1.0±0.5±0.1 for the electron decay, consistent with our measurement of the form factor for the decay D + → K ∗0 μ + ν .

Abstract

We report the first observation (103±17 events) of the decay Λ+c → Σ−π+π+ and the charge conjugate. A measurement of the relative branching ratio Г (Λ + c → Σ − π + π + )/Г (Λ + c → Σ + π + π + π − = 0.53±0.15 (stat) ± 0.07 (sys) is also presented.

Abstract

Charged particle separation by the d E d x method in a liquid krypton (LKr) ionization chamber has been experimentally studied. The detector has been exposed to pions and protons at the T11 test beam of the CERN PS. Results on particle separation at three different energies are presented. Some results on the performance of monolithic preamplifiers purposely developed to be employed at cryogenic temperatures in calorimetry applications are also presented.

Abstract

We report precise measurements of the D 0 and D + meson lifetimes by the E687 Collaboration at Fermilab. The measurements have been made using 16000 fully reconstructed decays of the D 0 into the K − π + and K − π + π − π + final states and 9000 decays of the D + into the K − π + π + final state. The lifetimes of the D 0 and D + mesons are measured to be 0.413±0.004±0.003 ps and 1.048±0.015±01011 ps respectively.

Abstract

An observation of an excited ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryon decaying to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, with ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{pK}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, is presented. We reconstruct 39.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8.7${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$ baryons with a mass of 340.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ above the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ mass. The upper limit on the resonant branching ratio is B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{\mathit{c}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$)36% at the 90% confidence level.
