Recently a novel class of responsive uncharged polymer brushes has been proposed [Klushin et al, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 074904 (2021)] where the brush-forming chains have an affinity to the substrate. For sufficiently strong surface interactions, a fraction of chains condenses into a near-surface layer, while the remaining ones form the outer brush with a reduced grafting density. The dense layer and the more tenuous outer brush can be seen as coexisting microphases. The effective grafting density of the outer brush is controlled by the adsorption strength and can be changed reversibly as a response to changes in environmental parameters. In this paper we use numerical self-consistent field calculations and theoretical considerations to study this phenomenon in polydisperse brushes. Our results reveal an unexpected effect: Although all chains are chemically identical, shorter chains are adsorbed preferentially. Hence, with the increase in the surface affinity parameter, a reduction in the surface grafting density of the residual brush is accompanied by a change in the shape of its molecular mass distribution. We propose a novel class of responsive polymer brushes, where the effective grafting density can be controlled by external stimuli. This is achieved by using end-grafted polymer chains that have an affinity to the substrate. For sufficiently strong surface interactions, a fraction of chains condenses into a near-surface layer, while the remaining ones form the outer brush. The dense layer and the more tenuous outer brush can be seen as coexisting microphases. The effective grafting density of the outer brush is controlled by the adsorption strength and can be changed reversibly and in a controlled way as a response to changes in environmental parameters. The effect is demonstrated by numerical SCF calculations and analyzed by scaling arguments. Since the thickness of the denser layer is about a few monomer sizes, its capacity to form a microphase is limited by the product of the brush chain length and the grafting density. We explore the range of chain lengths and grafting densities where the effect is most pronounced. In this range, the SCF studies suggest that individual chains inside the brush show large rapid fluctuations between two states that are separated by only a small free energy barrier. The behavior of the brush as a whole, however, does not reflect these large fluctuations, and the effective grafting density varies smoothly as a function of the control parameters., Comment: To appear in J. We explore semi-dilute and concentrated oligomers and polymers in a broad range of polymerization indices N ranging from 1 to a 100 and in a range of monomer number densities $\phi$ from 0.1 to 0.8 via molecular dynamics simulations and under good solvent conditions. This parameter range covers both no-overlap and strong chain overlap regimes, as quantified by the polymer packing fraction $0.1\le\Phi\le{14}$. Contrary to some common beliefs, the non-ideal part of the osmotic pressure demonstrates strong finite size effects. In the overlap regime, it deviates substantially from the scaling form of de Cloizeaux. The finite size correction term is proportional to 1/N, irrespective of $\Phi$. We propose a simple phenomenological description of the osmotic pressure in the infinite chain limit and of the monomer density dependence of the 1/N correction term. We extend the treatment of finite size effects to cover binary mixtures with 2 different chain lengths, and demonstrate that the proposed equation of state is applicable with an effective mass-averaged inverse chain length $1/N_{eff}$. Phase-locking of oscillators leads to superradiant amplification of the emission power. This is particularly important for development of THz sources, which suffer from low emission efficacy. In this work we study large Josephson junction arrays containing several thousands of Nb-based junctions. Using low-temperature scanning laser microscopy we observe that at certain bias conditions two-dimensional standing-wave patterns are formed, manifesting global synchronization of the arrays. Analysis of standing waves indicates that they are formed by surface plasmon type electromagnetic waves propagating at the electrode/substrate interface. Thus we demonstrate that surface waves provide an effective mechanism for long-range coupling and phase-locking of large junction arrays., Comment: 6 pages, 3 Figures

We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that thin dirty superconductor-normal metal bilayer with resistivity of normal metal $\rho_N$ much smaller than normal-state resistivity of superconductor $\rho_S$ has unique superconducting properties. First of all the normal layer provides the dominant contribution to the diamagnetic response of whole bilayer structure in wide temperature interval below the critical temperature due to proximity induced superconductivity. Secondly, the presence of the normal layer may increase the critical current $I_c$ in several times (the effect is not connected with enhanced vortex pinning), provides strong temperature dependence of both $I_c$ and effective magnetic field penetration depth even at temperatures much below the critical one and leads to the diode effect in parallel magnetic field. Besides of general interest we believe that the found results may be useful in construction of different kinds of superconducting detectors., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

Using Brownian Dynamics, we study the dynamical behavior of a polymer grafted onto an adhesive surface close to the mechanically induced adsorption-stretching transition. Even though the transition is first order, (in the infinite chain length limit, the stretching degree of the chain jumps discontinuously), the characteristic relaxation time is found to grow according to a power law as the transition point is approached. We present a dynamic effective interface model which reproduces these observations and provides an excellent quantitaive description of the simulations data. The generic nature of the theoretical model suggests that the unconventional mixing of features that are characteristic for first-order transitions (a jump in an order parameter) and features that are characteristic of critical points (anomalous slowdown) may be a common phenomenon in force-driven phase transitions of macromolecules., Comment: 5 figures

We use Brownian dynamics simulations and analytical theory to compare two prominent types of single molecule transitions. One is the adsorption transition of a loop (a chain with two ends bound to an attractive substrate) driven by an attraction parameter $\varepsilon$, and the other is the loop-stretch transition in a chain with one end attached to a repulsive substrate, driven by an external end-force $F$ applied to the free end. Specifically, we compare the behavior of the respective order parameters of the transitions, i.e., the mean number of surface contacts in the case of the adsorption transition, and the mean position of the chain end in the case of the loop-stretch transition. Close to the transition points, both the static and the dynamic behavior of chains with different length $N$ are very well described by a scaling Ansatz with the scaling parameters $(\varepsilon - \varepsilon^*) N^\phi$ (adsorption transition) and $(F-F^*) N^\nu$ (loop-stretch transition), respectively, where $\phi$ is the crossover exponent of the adsorption transition, and $\nu$ the Flory exponent. We show that both the loop-stretch and the loop adsorption transitions provide an exceptional opportunity to construct explicit analytical expressions for the crossover functions which perfectly describe all simulation results on static properties in the finite-size scaling regime. Explicit crossover functions are based on the Ansatz for the analytical form of the order parameter distributions at the respective transition points. In contrast to the close similarity in equilibrium static behavior, the dynamic relaxation at the two transitions shows qualitative differences, especially in the strongly ordered regimes., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We study the effect of polydispersity on the structure of polymer brushes by analytical theory, a numerical self-consistent field approach, and Monte Carlo simulations. The polydispersity is represented by the Schulz-Zimm chain-length distribution. We specifically focus on three different polydispersities representing sharp, moderate and extremely wide chain length distributions and derive explicit analytical expressions for the chain end distributions in these brushes. The results are in very good agreement with numerical data obtained with self-consistent field calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. With increasing polydispersity, the brush density profile changes from convex to concave, and for given average chain length $N_n$ and grafting density $\sigma$, the brush height $H$ is found to scale as $(H/H_{\mathrm{mono}}-1)\propto(N_w/N_n-1)^{1/2}$ over a wide range of polydispersity indices $N_w/N_n$ (here $H_{\mathrm{mono}}$ is the height of the corresponding monodisperse brush. Chain end fluctuations are found to be strongly suppressed already at very small polydispersity. Based on this observation, we introduce the concept of the brush as a near-critical system with two parameters (scaling variables), $(N_{n}\sigma^{2/3})^{-1}$ and $(N_w/N_n-1)^{1/2}$, controlling the distance from the critical point. This approach provides a good description of the simulation data. Finally we study the hydrodynamic penetration length $l_\mathrm{p}$ for brush-coated surfaces in flow. We find that it generally increases with polydispersity. The scaling behavior crosses over from $l_\mathrm{p}\sim N_\mathrm{n}^{1/2}\sigma^{-1/6}$ for monodisperse and weakly polydisperse brushes to $l_\mathrm{p}\sim N_{n}^{2/3}$ for strongly polydisperse brushes., Comment: 21pages, 9 figures. Using a combination of analytical theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and three dimensional self-consistent field calculations, we study the equilibrium properties and the switching behavior of adsorption-active polymer chains included in a homopolymer brush. The switching transition is driven by a conformational change of a small fraction of minority chains, which are attracted by the substrate. Depending on the strength of the attractive interaction, the minority chains assume one of two states: An exposed state characterized by a stem-crown-like conformation, and an adsorbed state characterized by a flat two-dimensional structure. Comparing the Monte Carlo simulations, which use an Edwards-type Hamiltonian with density dependent interactions, with the predictions from self-consistent-field theory based on the same Hamiltonian, we find that thermal density fluctuations affect the system in two different ways. First, they renormalize the excluded volume interaction parameter $v_\mathrm{\tiny bare}$ inside the brush. The properties of the brushes can be reproduced by self-consistent field theory if one replaces $v_\mathrm{\tiny bare}$ by an effective parameter $v_{\mathrm{\tiny eff}}$, where the ratio of second virial coefficients $B_{\mathrm{\tiny eff}}/B_\mathrm{\tiny bare}$ depends on the range of monomer interactions, but not on the grafting density, the chain length, and $v_\mathrm{\tiny bare}$. Second, density fluctuations affect the conformations of chains at the brush surface and have a favorable effect on the characteristics of the switching transition: In the interesting regime where the transition is sharp, they reduce the free energy barrier between the two states significantly. We propose a design for polymer-based sensors and switches with sharp switching transition and fast response time. The switching mechanism involves a radical change in the conformations of adsorption-active minority chains in a brush. Such transitions can be induced by a temperature change of only about ten degrees, and the characteristic time of the conformational change is less than a second. We study temperature dependence of the critical current modulation Ic(H) for two types of planar Josephson junctions: a low-Tc Nb/CuNi/Nb and a high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7 bicrystal grain-boundary junction. At low T both junctions exhibit a conventional behavior, described by the local sine-Gordon equation. However, at elevated T the behavior becomes qualitatively different: the Ic(H) modulation field deltaH becomes almost T-independent and neither deltaH nor the critical field for penetration of Josephson vortices vanish at Tc. Such an unusual behavior is in good agreement with theoretical predictions for junctions with nonlocal electrodynamics. We extract absolute values of the London penetration depth from our data and show that a crossover from local to nonlocal electrodynamics occurs with increasing T when London penetration depth becomes larger than the electrode thickness., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. We undertake a systematic numerical exploration of self-organized states in a deterministic model of interacting self-propelled particles in two dimensions. In the process, we identify various types of collective motion, namely, disordered swarms, rings, and droplets. We construct a "phase diagram," which summarizes our results as it delineates phase transitions ?all discontinuous? between disordered swarms and vortical flocks on one hand and bound vortical flocks and expanding formations on the other. One of the transition lines is found to have a close analogy with the temperature-driven gas-liquid transition, in finite clusters with the same interparticle potential. Furthermore, we report on a type of flocking which takes place in the presence of a uniform external driver. Altogether, our results set a rather firm stage for experimental refinement and/or falsification of this class of models.

A polymer chain containing $N$ monomers confined in a finite cylindrical tube of diameter $D$ grafted at a distance $L$ from the open end of the tube may undergo a rather abrupt transition, where part of the chain escapes from the tube to form a "crown-like" coil outside of the tube. When this problem is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice applying a cylindrical confinement and using the standard pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), one obtains spurious results, however: with increasing chain length the transition gets weaker and weaker, due to insufficient sampling of the "escaped" states, as a detailed analysis shows. In order to solve this problem, a new variant of a biased sequential sampling algorithm with re-sampling is proposed, force-biased PERM: the difficulty of sampling both phases in the region of the first order transition with the correct weights is treated by applying a force at the free end pulling it out of the tube. Different strengths of this force need to be used and reweighting techniques are applied. Using rather long chains (up to N=18000) and wide tubes (up to D=29 lattice spacings), the free energy of the chain, its end-to-end distance, the number of "imprisoned" monomers can be estimated, as well as the order parameter and its distribution. It is suggested that this new algorithm should be useful for other problems involving state changes of polymers, where the different states belong to rather disjunct "valleys" in the phase space of the system., Comment: 10 pages, 17 figures

We present a scaling theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation results for a flexible polymer chain slowly dragged by one end into a nanotube. We also describe the situation when the completely confined chain is released and gradually leaves the tube. MC simulations were performed for a self-avoiding lattice model with a biased chain growth algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method. The nanotube is a long channel opened at one end and its diameter $D$ is much smaller than the size of the polymer coil in solution. We analyze the following characteristics as functions of the chain end position $x$ inside the tube: the free energy of confinement, the average end-to-end distance, the average number of imprisoned monomers, and the average stretching of the confined part of the chain for various values of $D$ and for the number of monomers in the chain, $N$. We show that when the chain end is dragged by a certain critical distance $x^*$ into the tube, the polymer undergoes a first-order phase transition whereby the remaining free tail is abruptly sucked into the tube. This is accompanied by jumps in the average size, the number of imprisoned segments, and in the average stretching parameter. The critical distance scales as $x^*\sim ND^{1-1/\nu}$. The transition takes place when approximately 3/4 of the chain units are dragged into the tube. The theory presented is based on constructing the Landau free energy as a function of an order parameter that provides a complete description of equilibrium and metastable states. We argue that if the trapped chain is released with all monomers allowed to fluctuate, the reverse process in which the chain leaves the confinement occurs smoothly without any jumps. Finally, we apply the theory to estimate the lifetime of confined DNA in metastable states in nanotubes., Comment: 13pages, 14figures

We revisit the classical problem of a polymer confined in a slit in both of its static and dynamic aspects. We confirm a number of well known scaling predictions and analyse their range of validity by means of comprehensive Molecular Dynamics simulations using a coarse-grained bead-spring model of a flexible polymer chain. The normal and parallel components of the average end-to-end distance, mean radius of gyration and their distributions, the density profile, the force exerted on the slit walls, and the local bond orientation characteristics are obtained in slits of width $D$ = $4 \div 10$ (in units of the bead radius) and for chain lengths $N=50 \div 300$. We demonstrate that a wide range of static chain properties in normal direction can be described {\em quantitatively} by analytic model - independent expressions in perfect agreement with computer experiment. In particular, the observed profile of confinement-induced bond orientation, is shown to closely match theory predictions. The anisotropy of confinement is found to be manifested most dramatically in the dynamic behavior of the polymer chain. We examine the relation between characteristic times for translational diffusion and lateral relaxation. It is demonstrated that the scaling predictions for lateral and normal relaxation times are in good agreement with our observations. A novel feature is the observed coupling of normal and lateral modes with two vastly different relaxation times. We show that the impact of grafting on lateral relaxation is equivalent to doubling the chain length., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

An end-grafted flexible polymer chain in 3d space between two pistons undergoes an abrupt transition from a confined coil to a flower-like conformation when the number of monomers in the chain, N, reaches a critical value. In 2d geometry, excluded volume interactions between monomers of a chain confined inside a strip of finite length 2L transform the coil conformation into a linear string of blobs. However, the blob picture raises questions on the nature of this escape transition. To check the theoretical predictions based on the blob picture we study 2d single polymer chains with excluded volume interactions and with one end grafted in the middle of a strip of length 2L and width H by simulating self-avoiding walks on a square lattice with the pruned-enriched-Rosenbluth method (PERM). We estimate the free energy, the end-to-end distance, the number of imprisoned monomers, the order parameter, and its distribution. It is shown that in the thermodynamic limit of large N and L but finite L/N, there is a small but finite jump in several average characteristics, including the order parameter. We also present a theoretical description based on the Landau free energy approach, which is in good agreement with the simulation results.
