This study concerns the characterization of the color palette of Michelino da Besozzo, one of the leading painters and illuminators of the Late Gothic period in Northern Italy. The artist’s relationship with the color blue was investigated by considering the recipe for lapis lazuli given by the artist to Giovanni Alcherio in Venice in 1410 and found in the medieval treatise of Jean Lebegue. The paper highlights this important evidence for the study of painting technique in the first half of the 15th century with an analytical and technical study of two paintings: The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (Siena, Pinacoteca Nazionale, inv. 171) and The Madonna of the Rose Garden (Verona, Museo di Castelvecchio, inv. 173-1B359). These two case studies were approached through analyses carried out with non-invasive and portable techniques such as Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) spectroscopy and Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS). The results show a color palette based on ultramarine, azurite, verdigris or copper resinate; earths, cinnabar or vermillion; and lead white, yellow and red ochre and lac. These preliminary results made it possible to clarify certain aspects of the artist’s style and his painting technique and identify common elements between the two works of art.

Abstract Background It is known from recent studies that more than 90% of human multi-exon genes are subject to Alternative Splicing (AS), a key molecular mechanism in which multiple transcripts may be generated from a single gene. It is widely recognized that a breakdown in AS mechanisms plays an important role in cellular differentiation and pathologies. Polymerase Chain Reactions, microarrays and sequencing technologies have been applied to the study of transcript diversity arising from alternative expression. Last generation Affymetrix GeneChip Human Exon 1.0 ST Arrays offer a more detailed view of the gene expression profile providing information on the AS patterns. The exon array technology, with more than five million data points, can detect approximately one million exons, and it allows performing analyses at both gene and exon level. In this paper we describe BEAT, an integrated user-friendly bioinformatics framework to store, analyze and visualize exon arrays datasets. It combines a data warehouse approach with some rigorous statistical methods for assessing the AS of genes involved in diseases. Meta statistics are proposed as a novel approach to explore the analysis results. BEAT is available at http://beat.ba.itb.cnr.it. Results BEAT is a web tool which allows uploading and analyzing exon array datasets using standard statistical methods and an easy-to-use graphical web front-end. BEAT has been tested on a dataset with 173 samples and tuned using new datasets of exon array experiments from 28 colorectal cancer and 26 renal cell cancer samples produced at the Medical Genetics Unit of IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. To highlight all possible AS events, alternative names, accession Ids, Gene Ontology terms and biochemical pathways annotations are integrated with exon and gene level expression plots. The user can customize the results choosing custom thresholds for the statistical parameters and exploiting the available clinical data of the samples for a multivariate AS analysis. Conclusions Despite exon array chips being widely used for transcriptomics studies, there is a lack of analysis tools offering advanced statistical features and requiring no programming knowledge. BEAT provides a user-friendly platform for a comprehensive study of AS events in human diseases, displaying the analysis results with easily interpretable and interactive tables and graphics.

Real estate plays a major role in environmental impact, contributing to nearly 39 % of global emissions and significantly influencing climate change. Using a sample of European REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) and real estate companies, this study examines the risk-adjusted performance of real estate investments concerning their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance, comparing the diversification benefits of conventional versus ESG real estate investments, with a specific focus on the environmental (E) aspects. The portfolios' asset allocation is designed using the Mean-Variance and the Risk Parity models. Simulations are run using a rolling-window technique, covering the entire sample period along with three different sub-samples. According to our findings, high ESG score real estate portfolios perform similarly to the overall sector, while portfolios with environmental scores above the sample average offer enhanced diversification benefits. This finding is particularly significant, as such portfolios have the potential to generate positive externalities by reducing climate impact through lower emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We seek to deepen and increase knowledge on the evolution of scholarship regarding digital payments by highlighting the main interpretative strands in the literature and the changes, if any, in research approaches. Using bibliometric and scientometric measures, we explore research hotspots and developmental trends in digital payments to identify influential aspects of published contributions and research streams. Our sample consists of 723 articles published between 1985 and 2021 obtained from the Web of Science. The results show that the most investigated digital payments are mobile payments, with the main analysis methodologies typically linked to technology adoption models. This review, original in terms of sample size and methodology, advances knowledge on the evolution of innovative payments and guides scholars in visualising various research models. Since the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is no longer a contraindication for solid organ transplantation. In HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients undergoing liver transplantation, HCV-related cirrhosis, drug-drug interactions, and calcineurin inhibitors-related toxicity affect clinical outcomes. Therapeutic drug monitoring can be useful to assess antiretroviral over- or underexposure in this cohort. Objectives: To assess prevalence and predictive factors of viro-immunological discordant trends in a cohort of heavily pretreated patients., Methods: Factors associated with viro-immunological discordant trends either as categorical or continuous measures have been studied in 159 heavily pretreated HIV-positive patients from a multicentre prospective study of real- vs. virtual-phenotype. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to assess risk factors for categorical discordant responses, ceasing follow-up at week 32 since enough patients had been on the original drug combination for a sufficient amount of time to evaluate their immune response. Complementary linear regression analysis was performed over the entire 48 weeks' follow-up considering CD4 and plasma viral load (pVL) as continuous measures., Results: Among 58 virological responder patients (> or =1 log10 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL decrease) and 101 virologically non-responders, immunological discordances (increase in CD4 count of< or > or =100 cells/microL) were observed in 58.6% and 38.6%, respectively. Baseline CD4 count was associated with discordant responses in both groups. Multivariable linear regression over the entire 48 weeks' follow-up demonstrated significant correlation between absolute decrease in pVL and increase in CD4 count (HR 28.06, 95%CI 35.32-20.79; P<0.001), also the use of protease inhibitors (PIs) in the salvage regimen (HR 36.57, 95%CI 15.45-57.68; P<0.001) and >8 months on treatment (HR 41.64, 95%CI 19.27-64.01; P<0.001) correlated with highly significant immune recovery., Conclusions: These data confirm that therapy, possibly including PIs, should be continued in heavily pretreated patients and that hard-to-reach pVL undetectability is not essential to obtain immunologic recovery; however, this is strongly increased by the degree of pVL reduction that should be achieved.
