Abstract

Traditional animal testing for toxicity is expensive, time consuming, ethically questioned, sometimes inaccurate because of the necessity to extrapolate from animal to human, and in most cases not formally validated according to modern standards. This is driving regulatory bodies and companies in backing alternative methods focusing on in silico and in vitro approaches. These are complex to implement and validate, and their wide adoption is not yet established despite legal directives providing an imperative. It is difficult to link a cell level response to effects on a whole organism, but the advances in high-throughput toxicogenomics towards elucidating the mechanism of action of substances are gradually reducing this gap and fostering the adoption of Next Generation Safety Assessment approaches. Quantitative in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (QIVIVE) methods hold the promise to reveal how to use in vitro -omics data to predict the potential for in vivo toxicity. They could improve lead compounds prioritisation, reduce time and costs, also in numbers of animal lives, and help with the complexity of extrapolating between species. We provide a description of QIVIVE state of the art, including how the problems of dosing and timing are being approached, how in silico simulation can take into account the variability of individuals, and how multiple techniques can be integrated to face complex tasks like the prediction of long term toxicity, including a close look into the open problems and challenges ahead., Comment: We authors have decided to withdraw the preprint from arXiv at this time. Abstract

Balancing parallel robots throughout their workspace while avoiding the use of balancing masses and respecting design practicality constraints is difficult. Medical robots demand such compact and lightweight designs. This paper considers the difficult task of achieving optimal approximate balancing of a parallel robot throughout a desired task-based dexterous workspace using balancing springs only. While it is possible to achieve perfect balancing in a path, only approximate balancing may be achieved without the addition of balancing masses. Design considerations for optimal robot base placement and the effects of placement of torsional balancing springs are presented. Using a modal representation for the balancing torque requirements, we use recent results on the design of wire-wrapped cam mechanisms to achieve balancing throughout a task-based workspace. A simulation study shows that robot base placement can have a detrimental effect on the attainability of a practical design solution for static balancing. We also show that optimal balancing using torsional springs is best achieved when all springs are at the actuated joints and that the wire-wrapped cam design can significantly improve the performance of static balancing. The methodology presented in this paper provides practical design solutions that yield simple, lightweight and compact designs suitable for medical applications where such traits are paramount.

Abstract

Science is among humanitys greatest achievements, yet scientific censorship is rarely studied empirically. We explore the social, psychological, and institutional causes and consequences of scientific censorship (defined as actions aimed at obstructing particular scientific ideas from reaching an audience for reasons other than low scientific quality). Popular narratives suggest that scientific censorship is driven by authoritarian officials with dark motives, such as dogmatism and intolerance. Our analysis suggests that scientific censorship is often driven by scientists, who are primarily motivated by self-protection, benevolence toward peer scholars, and prosocial concerns for the well-being of human social groups. This perspective helps explain both recent findings on scientific censorship and recent changes to scientific institutions, such as the use of harm-based criteria to evaluate research. We discuss unknowns surrounding the consequences of censorship and provide recommendations for improving transparency and accountability in scientific decision-making to enable the exploration of these unknowns. The benefits of censorship may sometimes outweigh costs. However, until costs and benefits are examined empirically, scholars on opposing sides of ongoing debates are left to quarrel based on competing values, assumptions, and intuitions.

44. Global Momentum Estimation of an Electric Power System

Abstract

This work presents a technique to estimate on-line the global momentum of an electric power system. It exploits the footprint of the principal frequency system dynamics. Probing tones are injected by a grid-forming converter-interfaced generator and the speed of its virtual rotor is exploited to extrapolate the footprint. The proposed technique is entirely data driven and thus it does not need any model of the power system. We show that the proposed technique is adequate to accurately estimate the actual global momentum contributed by synchronous machines and provided by the controllers of converter-interfaced generators that emulate the behavior of synchronous machines. The technique is comprehensively tested on a modified version of the IEEE 39-BUS system and a dynamic version of the IEEE 118-BUS system, containing grid forming converter interfaced generators.

Abstract

A Round Robin study has been carried out to estimate the impact of the human element in small-angle scattering data analysis. Four corrected datasets were provided to participants ready for analysis. All datasets were measured on samples containing spherical scatterers, with two datasets in dilute dispersions, and two from powders. Most of the 46 participants correctly identified the number of populations in the dilute dispersions, with half of the population mean entries within 1.5% and half of the population width entries within 40%, respectively. Due to the added complexity of the structure factor, much fewer people submitted answers on the powder datasets. For those that did, half of the entries for the means and widths were within 44% and 86% respectively. Abstract

The growing deployment of electric mobility calls for power system analyses to investigate to what extent the simultaneous charging of electric vehicles leads to degraded network operation and to validate the efficiency of countermeasures. To reduce complexity and CPU time, a common approach while performing these analyses consists in replacing electric vehicles and their charging stations with constant PQ loads. However, this approach is inaccurate, as the power absorbed by these elements actually depends not only on voltage but also on the state of charge, charging method, cathode chemistry of the battery pack, and converter controls in the electric vehicle and charging station. By considering all these aspects, this article develops a novel static load model and a vector fitting-based dynamic load model for electric vehicles connected to fast charging stations. These computationally efficient representations can replace the standard constant PQ load model of electric vehicles to assess more accurately their impact in static and dynamic grid studies. Simulation results of the IEEE14 system modified by adding fleets of electric vehicles prove the accuracy of the proposed models and highlight the shortcomings of the standard electric vehicle representation as a constant PQ load in some cases.
