- Abstract
Background: Critical thinking and argumentative writing are considered complex but essential skills for learners. However, few studies have examined how instructions can be designed to optimize the development of such skills simultaneously. Contextualized in flipped language classrooms, this study aimed to develop an instructional innovation for English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. Objectives: This study investigated the effects of an annotation-supported Socratic questioning (ASSQ) approach as a flipped classroom enhancement on students' argumentative writing and critical thinking in an EFL writing course. Methods: Fifty students from two classes participated in the study, and they were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a comparison group. Following an 8-week flipped learning curriculum, the experimental group learned with the proposed ASSQ approach in the enhanced flipped classroom, while the comparison group was exposed to the traditional flipped classroom. Students' argumentative writing performance was evaluated with their argumentative essays using a researcher-developed writing rubric, and their critical thinking skills were assessed using the California Critical Thinking Skills Test. Results: Both groups significantly improved their argumentative writing, and the experimental group also significantly outperformed the comparison group after learning through the proposed approach. While the two groups had no significant difference in critical thinking skills, the within-group comparison results revealed that the experimental group made significant improvements due to the instructional intervention. Implications: The ASSQ approach could enhance the flipped classroom in regard to the teaching of argumentative writing, whereas it bears only limited impact on critical thinking. Overall, the positive effect of the proposed approach on enhancing English learners' argumentative writing performance was mainly attributed to the combined affordances of Socratic questioning and a social annotation tool to scaffold the students' thinking through verbal articulation, and to visualize their thinking with social annotations throughout the flipped learning process.

- Abstract
Undergraduate research experiences can improve student success in graduate education and STEM careers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, undergraduate researchers at our institution and many others lost their work-study research positions due to interruption of in-person research activities. This imposed a financial burden on the students and eliminated an important learning opportunity. To address these challenges, we created a paid, fully remote, cohort-based research curriculum in computational protein design. Our curriculum used existing protein design methods as a platform to first educate and train undergraduate students and then to test research hypotheses. In the first phase, students learned computational methods to assess the stability of designed protein assemblies. In the second phase, students used a larger data set to identify factors that could improve the accuracy of current protein design algorithms. This cohort-based program created valuable new research opportunities for undergraduates at our institute and enhanced the undergraduates' feeling of connection with the lab. Students learned transferable and useful skills such as literature review, programming basics, data analysis, hypothesis testing, and scientific communication. Our program provides a model of structured computational research training opportunities for undergraduate researchers in any field for organizations looking to expand educational access.

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March 2020 and global surgical practice was compromised. This Commission aimed to document and reflect on the changes seen in the surgical environment during the pandemic, by reviewing colleagues’ experiences and published evidence. Methods In late 2020, BJS contacted colleagues across the global surgical community and asked them to describe how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had affected their practice. In addition to this, the Commission undertook a literature review on the impact of COVID-19 on surgery and perioperative care. A thematic analysis was performed to identify the issues most frequently encountered by the correspondents, as well as the solutions and ideas suggested to address them. Results BJS received communications for this Commission from leading clinicians and academics across a variety of surgical specialties in every inhabited continent. The responses from all over the world provided insights into multiple facets of surgical practice from a governmental level to individual clinical practice and training. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered a variety of problems in healthcare systems, including negative impacts on surgical practice. Global surgical multidisciplinary teams are working collaboratively to address research questions about the future of surgery in the post-COVID-19 era. The COVID-19 pandemic is severely damaging surgical training. The establishment of a multidisciplinary ethics committee should be encouraged at all surgical oncology centres. Innovative leadership and collaboration is vital in the post-COVID-19 era.

- Abstract
The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor cryogenic system mainly provides necessary supercritical helium for cooling superconducting coils and structure to transfer the static thermal load and the dynamic thermal load generated during plasma operation mode. According to the conceptual design of CFETR cryogenic system, the cooling capacity at 4.5 K is about 125 kW, with five 25 kW@4.5 K helium refrigerators in parallel. As one of the main components, a horizontal cold box provides a vacuum and insulating working environment for plate-fin heat exchangers, turbines, adsorbers, control valves and pipes. This paper presents a preliminary structural design for the 25 kW@4.5 K helium refrigerator horizontal cold box. The structural strength and static heat leakage of the cold box including support seats are analyzed through the finite element simulation method. The simulation results further verify the rationality and feasibility of the cold box structure design, and provide a certain reference for the subsequent detailed engineering design.

Summary Vitamin D receptor (VDR) mediates various biochemical activities between the cytoplasm and the nucleus in the cell. The nucleotide-binding, oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) protein is involved in the T helper type 2 (Th2) response. This study tests a hypothesis that VDR interacts with NLRP3 to restrict the Th2-biased response. In this study, VDR−/− mice and WT (WT) mice were used. Th2 cell differentiation between VDR−/− mice and WT mice was observed. We observed that CD4+ T cell activation was higher in VDR−/− mice. The VDR−/−CD4+ T cells were prone to Th2 polarization. VDR−/− mice produced more immunoglobulin (Ig)E. VDR bound NLRP3 to prevent Th2 differentiation by restricting IL4 gene transcription. Th2 biased inflammation spontaneously developed in the intestine of VDR−/− mice. In conclusion, VDR binds NLRP3 to restrict IL4 gene transcription and prevent biased Th2 polarization.

Mathematics ,QA1-939 - Abstract
An integrated approach considering the view of both the buyer and the vendor is discussed in this study. It can be shown numerically that the integrated approach results in an impressive cost reduction when compared with an independent decision approach by the buyer. Although the integrated total cost decreases, the buyer's cost increases due to larger orders. To entice the buyer to accept larger order quantity, a permissible delay in payment is offered by the vendor to the buyer. A negotiation factor is also incorporated to share the benefits. Background The generation of the tolerogenic dendritic cells (DC) is not fully understood yet. Forkhead box protein-3 (Foxp3) is an important molecule in the immune tolerance. This study tests a hypothesis that DCs express Foxp3, which can be up regulated by Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). Methods The expression of Foxp3 by DCs was evaluated by real time RT-PCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. Results We observed that mice treated with SEB at 0.25-0.5 μg/mouse showed high frequencies of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β-producing CD4+ T cells and TGF-β-producing DCs in the intestine, while the IL-4+ CD4+ T cells and TIM4+ DCs were dominated in the intestine in mice treated with SEB at 1-10 μg/mouse. Treating DCs with SEB in the culture induced high levels of Foxp3 at the TGF-β promoter locus. The function of Foxp3 was blocked by STAT6 (Signal transducer and activator transcription-6); the latter was induced by exposing DCs to SEB in the culture at doses of 100-400 ng/ml. Treating allergic mice with specific immunotherapy (SIT) together with SEB significantly promoted the therapeutic effects on the allergic responses than treating with SIT alone. Conclusion DCs have the capacity to express Foxp3, which can be up regulated by exposure to SEB. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The comprehensive research facility for key systems of fusion reactors was included in the “13th Five-Year Plan” priority project in China. In order to meet the requirements of cryogenic testing of large superconducting magnets, it is proposed to build a 3kW@4.5K refrigerator and carry out research on 3kW@4.5K superfluid helium cryogenic system. In order to evaluate the reliability of the 3kW refrigerator, the FMECA analysis was performed on the helium refrigerator. The refrigerator system is divided into three subsystems: the compressor system, the monitoring and control system and the cold box, to identify the failure mode and the impact on the refrigerator system related functions. The critical value is calculated and the critical matrix is drawn by the severity and the occurrence of the rating criteria. Identify the parts with high and medium risks and propose corresponding risk mitigation measures.

One of the supply chain risks for hi-tech products is the result of rapid technological innovation; it results in a significant decline in the selling price and demand after the initial launch period. Hi-tech products include computers and communication consumer's products. From a practical standpoint, a more realistic replenishment policy is needed to consider the impact of risks; especially when some portions of shortages are lost. In this paper, suboptimal and optimal order policies with partial backordering are developed for a buyer when the component cost, the selling price, and the demand rate decline at a continuous rate. Two mathematical models are derived and discussed: one model has the suboptimal solution with the fixed replenishment interval and a simpler computational process; the other one has the optimal solution with the varying replenishment interval and a more complicated computational process. The second model results in more profit. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the two replenishment models. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the relationship between the parameters and the net profit.

The imaginary part of the Clausius-Mossotti factor, Ki, is crucial for quantitative particle/cell manipulation and characterization using travelling wave dielectrophoresis (twDEP) and electrorotation (ER). It can be measured rather easily using twDEP instead of using ER, as numerical calculation of the electric field and complicated devices are not needed for evaluating Ki using twDEP. However, the current single frequency twDEP method works only for particles/cells exhibiting negative dielectrophoresis (DEP), which is in general the case when cells are manipulated in physiological strength buffers with conductivity of order of 1S/m. In order to remove such a restriction, a modified twDEP method is proposed using dual frequency operation here capable of measuring the Ki spectra of particles/cells for the entire range of medium conductivity, irrespectively of whether the particles/cells exhibit positive or negative DEP. The success of the modified method relies on the adequate design of force balance between various forces in a designed micro channel, which was discussed in details. The method was validated, and demonstrated by measuring Ki spectra of three human cancer cells for medium conductivity from 0.01 ~ 1.2S/m. Both the method and the cell result find biomedical and other industrial applications.

Over the past years, safety and feasibility of conventional laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair was well established. However, conventional laparoscopic hernia repair (CL) usually requires three working ports ranging from 5 to 10 mm, and each increasing port is associated with possible increasing morbidity and pain related to ports. This has led to the development of single incision laparoscopic hernia repair (SIL) which can further reduce the port-related morbidities and improve cosmetic outcomes. The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of SIL using both transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) and totally preperitoneal (TEP) approaches and compare the patients’ wound satisfaction between the two groups. This is a retrospective review of prospectively collected data. We analyzed the results of patients who underwent either CL or SIL for inguinal hernia between January 2011 and July 2012 in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Patients’ demographic details, type of hernia, operative time, mesh used, and post-operative complications were compared. A telephone survey was also conducted to evaluate patients’ subjective wound satisfaction. In total, 32 SIL and 35 CL procedures were performed in this period. The two groups were matched for age, sex, type of hernia and ASA grading. The mean operative time was significantly shorter in the CL group (52.6 vs. 62.6 min, p = 0.02). All SIL procedures were completed successfully without conversion to CL or open repair and post-operative complications such as wound infection, seroma, recurrence and chronic pain were also comparable between the two groups. As for the telephone survey, SIL groups’ wound is less obvious and less detectable by others as compared to CL, but on the whole both groups of patients are very satisfied with the wound outcomes. All the SIL groups would continue with their decision on SIL and 60 % of CL group would choose SIL if they had to go back in time. Our results have shown that in experienced hands, SIL is feasible and as safe as CL. Further randomized trials should be performed to evaluate the clinical application of single incision TEP and TAPP.

Background: Migration of endoscopically placed biliary stents is a known complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, which has a reported incidence of 3% - 6%. Usually, distal migration is asymptomatic and is detected incidentally. Case Presentation: We present a rare case of duodenal perforation caused by distal migration of a biliary stent. A 50 years old gentleman initially presented with cholangitis. ERCP showed a dilated common bile duct with a 9 mm stone and a biliary stent was placed. The patient subsequently presented with biliary peritonitis due to the migration of the stent causing perforation of the anterior wall of the second part of the duodenum. Emergency laparotomy was performed to remove the stent and the perforation was repaired. The patient made an uneventful recovery. Discussion: A brief discussion on stent migration is also conducted. Whilst distal migration of stents is less common than its proximal counterpart, it is important to note that rare complications may arise and be addressed in a timely manner.

In recent years, two-echelon inventory system has been widely studied by many researchers. Most researches focused on joint integrated model, and very few have applied the bi-level strategies. To conform more to real life, this paper considers a bi-level decision where a vendor or a buyer takes the role of a leader or a follower. We present a bi-level programming formulation for a time-varying product price. A bi-level elitist genetic algorithm is presented to solve the proposed nonlinear bi-level programming problem. Density information is coordinated in the proposed approach to improve the optimal solutions. An experimental data is used to compare the bi-level strategy with the integrated approach.

Through cost-benefit analysis (CBA), cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) and quantitative optimization analysis to understand the economic benefit and outcomes of strategy regarding preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) on hepatitis B virus.Based on the principle of Hepatitis B immunization decision analytic-Markov model, strategies on PMTCT and universal vaccination were compared. Related parameters of Shenzhen were introduced to the model, a birth cohort was set up as the study population in 2013. The net present value (NPV), benefit-cost ratio (BCR), incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) were calculated and the differences between CBA and CEA were compared.A decision tree was built as the decision analysis model for hepatitis B immunization. Three kinds of Markov models were used to simulate the outcomes after the implementation of vaccination program. The PMTCT strategy of Shenzhen showed a net-gain as 38 097.51 Yuan/per person in 2013, with BCR as 14.37. The universal vaccination strategy showed a net-gain as 37 083.03 Yuan/per person, with BCR as 12.07. Data showed that the PMTCT strategy was better than the universal vaccination one and would end with gaining more economic benefit. When comparing with the universal vaccination program, the PMTCT strategy would save 85 100.00 Yuan more on QALY gains for every person. The PMTCT strategy seemed more cost-effective compared with the one under universal vaccination program. In the CBA and CEA hepatitis B immunization programs, the immunization coverage rate and costs of hepatitis B related diseases were the most important influencing factors. Outcomes of joint-changes of all the parameters in CEA showed that PMTCT strategy was a more cost-effective.The PMTCT strategy gained more economic benefit and effects on health. However, the cost of PMTCT strategy was more than the universal vaccination program, thus it is important to pay attention to the process of PMTCT strategy and the universal vaccination program. CBA seemed suitable for strategy optimization while CEA was better for strategy evaluation. Hopefully, programs as combination of the above said two methods would facilitate the process of economic evaluation.

SiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) are fabricated on InGaN-based multiple quantum well (MQW) solar cells using self-assembled Ag nanoparticles as the etching mask and subsequent reactive ion etching. The SiO2 NRAs effectively suppress the undesired surface reflections over the wavelengths from 330 to 570 nm, which is attributed to the light-trapping effect and the improved mismatch of refractive index at the air/MQW device interface. Under the air mass 1.5 global illumination, the conversion efficiency of the solar cell is enhanced by ∼21% largely due to increased short-circuit current from 0.71 to 0.76 mA/cm2. The enhanced device performances by the optical absorption improvement are supported by the simulation analysis as well.

This study presents a stochastic demand multi-product supplier selection model with service level and budget constraints using Genetic Algorithm. Recently, much attention has been given to stochastic demand due to uncertainty in the real world. Conflicting objectives also exist between profit, service level and resource utilization. In this study, the relationship between the expected profit and the number of trials as well as between the expected profit and the combination of mutation and crossover rates are investigated to identify better parameter values to efficiently run the Genetic Algorithm. Pareto optimal solutions and return on investment are analyzed to provide decision makers with the alternative options of achieving the proper budget and service level. The results show that the optimal value for the return on investment and the expected profit are obtained with a certain budget and service level constraint.

The voltage and the power production of two gram negative and two gram positive bacteria in four identical continuous flow microbial fuel cells combined with biological wastewater treatment units were evaluated and compared in the present study. Each microbial fuel cell and biological treatment unit was operated at four different flow rates and four different external load resistances. The results show that overall removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand for all four systems can reach more than 85.5 %. Each pure culture has different power generation performance that can be affected by some factors, such as wastewater characteristics, influent flow rate and hydraulic retention time of reactor. Good linear relationships between the flow rate and the potential and between the flow rate and the power density on four pure cultures at different external load resistances were found. Comamonas testosteroni has better power generation performance than Arthrobacter polychromogenes, especially at higher flow rate. Although Pseudomonas putida also showed higher power generation than Corynebacterium glutamicum, the difference was not statistically significant. It seems that gram negative bacteria could display higher power generation than gram positive bacteria at higher flow rate. However, more evidence is required to provide stronger proof for the difference of power generation between gram negative and gram positive bacteria.

Summary Interleukin (IL)-17 plays an important role in the pathogenesis in a number of immune inflammatory disorders. This study aims to investigate the mechanism by which microbial product flagellin is involved in the development of T helper type (Th)17 cells. Serum levels of IL-17 and CXCL9-11 in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) were evaluated. The source and mechanism of CXC11 release in intestinal mucosa were examined with colonic biopsies from UC patients and a colitis mouse model. The role of flagellin in the development of Th17 cells was studied with a cell co-culture system. High serum levels of CXCL11 and IL-17 were observed in UC. Flagellin could induce the production of CXCL11 in CD14+ cells that facilitated the development of Th17 cells. In a skewed Th1 response environment flagellin induces intestinal inflammation, with IL-17 expression predominant. CXCR3/CXCL11 pathway is involved in microbial product flagellin-induced intestinal inflammation in which the Th17 response plays an important role.

For Hi-tech products, the demand rate, the component cost as well as the selling price usually decline significantly with time. In the case of perfect competition, shortages usually result in lost sales; while in a monopoly, shortages will be completely backordered. However, neither perfect competition nor monopoly exists. Therefore, there is a need to develop a replenishment model considering a hybrid of perfect competition and monopoly when the cost, price and demand are decreasing simultaneously. A numerical example and sensitivity analysis are carried out to illustrate this model. The results show that a higher decline-rate in the component cost leads to a smaller service level and a larger replenishment interval. When the component cost decline rate increases and the selling price decline rate decreases simultaneously, the replenishment interval decreases. In perfect competition it is better to have a high service level, while for the case with monopoly, keeping a low service level is better due to complete backordering.

In order to investigate the effect of spacer length and linkages between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal group on the molecular interaction and physical properties of polymers, a series of novel side chain liquid crystalline polymers were synthesized. These were composed of liquid crystalline monomers with six or eleven methylene segments as spacers, and chiral monomers end capped with menthyl or cholesteryl groups. Liquid crystalline phases of the polymers were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy, and confirmed with X-ray diffractometry. Color image recording of the synthesized polymer films was achieved using a thermal treatment, and then fixed by quenching. This investigation demonstrates that the introduction of carbonate linking groups between the rigid mesogenic core and terminal group decreases both the lateral molecular interaction and thermal stability of the liquid crystalline polymers. The RGB reflection colors of the cholesteric composite film could be tuned by varying the film temperature and applying an external field. The results of this investigation present significant scientific and practical contributions with respect to the development of unique cholesteric polymer materials.

Previous researchers have developed ways of managing forward-oriented supply chains, and gave insight to solve single-stage inventory systems. In this study, we analyze an inventory system with traditional forward-oriented material flow as well as a reverse material flow supply chain. In the reverse material flow, the used products are returned, remanufactured and shipped to the retailer for resale. A multi-echelon inventory system with remanufacturing capability is proposed. We then develop a closed-loop supply chain inventory model and maximize the joint profits of the supplier, the manufacturer, the third-party recycle dealer and the retailer under contractual design. The analytical results of this study show a significant increase in the joint profit when the integrated policy is adopted.

Due to rapid technological innovation, shortening product life cycle and severe competition, product demand rate will decrease. In this study, we develop a collaborative vendor-buyer inventory system with exponentially decreasing market, finite horizon and constant replenishment interval. The result of this study shows an impressive cost reduction as a result of collaboration. The result is even more significant for products with decreasing demand. High-tech products (e.g., microcomputer chip), which is being substituted by another, has the characteristic of declining market demand with negatively exponential distribution. A numerical example and sensitivity analysis are provided to illustrate the theory and to derive the percentage total cost reduction of the collaborative vendor-buyer system.

Owing to rapid technological innovation and severe competition, the upstream component price and the downstream product cost of hi-tech industries like computers and communication consumer's products usually decline significantly with time. From a practical viewpoint, there is a need to develop a collaborative pricing and replenishing model with finite horizon when the vendor's purchase cost and the end-consumer's market price are reduced simultaneously. To entice collaboration, the vendor may offer some price discount to the buyer using a negotiation factor to balance the net profit for each player. A numerical example and sensitivity analysis are carried out to illustrate the model. Our results indicate that higher decline-rate in the vendor's purchase cost leads to a smaller vendor lot size, and the higher decline-rate in the market price leads to a larger buyer lot size. The percentage increase in the net profit is approximately 6.57% when cost/price reduction is considered. Therefore, it is significant to consider the effect of the cost/price reduction, especially in hi-tech industries.

Yang and Wee (Economic ordering policy of deteriorated item for vendor and buyer: an integrated approach. Prod. Plan. & Cont., 2000, 11(5), 474–480) proposed an ordering policy for a vendor--buyer integrated model. This note examines the cost component of Yang and Wee's model and gives some insight on the derivation of the holding cost function. We have discovered that their model violates the positive holding cost characteristic and the total quantity-equality characteristic. A proposal to eradicate the problem is given.

Traditionally, inventory problems for the vendor and the buyer are treated separately. In modern enterprises, however, the integration of vendor---buyer inventory system is an important issue. This co-operative approach to inventory management contributes to the success of supply chain management by minimizing the joint inventory cost. The joint inventory cost and the response time can further be reduced when the buyer orders and the vendor replenishes the required items just in time (JIT) for their consumption. The inclusion of the JIT concept in this model contributes significantly to a joint inventory cost reduction. A numerical example and sensitivity analysis are carried out. The derived results show an impressive cost reduction when compared with Goyal's model.

This study develops an optimal pricing and replenishment policies in a “leagile” (lean and agile) supply chain system for a single vendor and multiple buyers. Since it benefits the vendor more than the buyers in the integrated system, a pricing strategy with price reduction is incorporated to entice the buyers to accept the minimum total cost integrated system. Negotiation factors are incorporated to balance the cost saving between the players. A numerical example with sensitivity analysis is provided to demonstrate the theory and the cost savings when integration is considered. The price reduction mechanism is a mutual beneficial strategic partnership between the vendor and the buyers.
