Anisotropic pair breaking close to surfaces favors chiral superfluid $^3$He-A over time-reversal invariant $^3$He-B. Confining superfluid $^3$He into a cavity of height $D$ of the order of the Cooper pair size characterized by the coherence length $\xi_0$ -- ranging between 16 nm (34 bar) and 77 nm (0 bar) -- extends the surface effects over the whole sample volume, thus allowing stabilization of the A phase at pressures $P$ and temperatures $T$ where otherwise the B phase would be stable. In this work the surfaces of such a confined sample are covered with a superfluid $^4$He film to create specular quasiparticle scattering boundary conditions, preventing the suppression of the superfluid order parameter. We show that the chiral A phase is the stable superfluid phase under strong confinement over the full $P-T$ phase diagram down to a quasi-two-dimensional limit $D/\xi_0 = 1$. The planar phase, which is degenerate with the chiral A phase in the weak-coupling limit, is not observed. The gap inferred from measurements over the wide pressure range from 0.2 to 21.0 bar leads to an empirical ansatz for temperature-dependent strong-coupling effects. Aims. We aim to elucidate the pulsar radio emission by studying several single-pulse phenomena, how they relate to each other, and how they evolve with observing frequency. We intend to inspire models for the pulsar radio emission and fast radio bursts. Methods. We set up an observing programme called the SUSPECT project running at the Nancay Radio Observatory telescopes in France (10 - 85 MHz, 110 - 240 MHz, 1 - 3.5 GHz) and the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) in India. In this first paper, we focus on high-sensitivity data obtained of PSR B1822-09 with the uGMRT between 550 and 750 MHz. The pulsar has precursor (PC), main pulse (MP), and interpulse (IP) emission, and exhibits mode-switching. We present its single-pulse stacks, investigate its mode-switching using a hidden Markov switching model, and analyse its single-pulse morphology. Results. PSR B1822-09's pulse profile decomposes into seven components. We show that its mode-switching is well described using a hidden Markov switching model. The pulsar exhibits at least three stable emission modes, one of which is a newly discovered bright flaring mode. We confirm that the PC and MP switch synchronously to each other, and both asynchronously to the IP, indicating information transfer between the polar caps. Additionally, we performed a fluctuation spectral analysis and discovered three fluctuation features in its quiescent Q-mode emission, one of which is well known. We conclude that it is longitude-stationary amplitude modulation. Finally, we visually classified the single-pulses into four categories. We found extensive 0.2 - 0.4 ms microstructure in the PC with a typical quasi-periodicity of 0.8 ms. There is low-level PC activity during the Q-mode, indicating mode mixing. Pulsars are detected over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from radio wavelengths up to very high energies, in the GeV-TeV range. Whereas the radio emission site for young pulsars is well constrained to occur at altitudes about several percent of the light-cylinder radius and $\gamma$-ray emission is believed to be produced in the striped wind, outside the light-cylinder, their non-thermal X-ray production site remains unknown. The aim of this letter is to localize the non-thermal X-ray emission region based on multi-wavelength pulse profile fitting for PSR J2229+6114, a particularly good candidate due to its high X-ray brightness. Based on the geometry deduced from the joint radio and $\gamma$-ray pulse profiles, we fix the magnetic axis inclination angle and the line of sight inclination angle but we leave the region of X-ray emission unlocalised, somewhere between the surface and the light-cylinder. We localize this region and its extension by fitting the X-ray pulse profile as observed by the NICER, NuSTAR and RXTE telescopes in the ranges 2-7 keV, 3-10 keV and 9.4-22.4 keV, respectively. We constrain the non-thermal X-ray emission to arise from altitudes between $0.2\,r_L$ and $0.55\,r_L$ where $r_L$ is the light cylinder radius. The magnetic obliquity is approximately $\alpha \approx 45\deg-50\deg$ and the line of sight inclination angle $\zeta \approx 32\deg-48\deg$. This letter is among the first works to tightly constrain the location of the non-thermal X-ray emission from pulsars. First order phase transitions in the very early universe are a prediction of many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and could provide the departure from equilibrium needed for a dynamical explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. They could also produce gravitational waves of a frequency observable by future space-based detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). All calculations of the gravitational wave power spectrum rely on a relativistic version of the classical nucleation theory of Cahn-Hilliard and Langer, due to Coleman and Linde. The high purity and precise control of pressure and temperature achievable in the laboratory made the first-order A to B transition of superfluid $^3$He an ideal for test of classical nucleation theory. As Leggett and others have noted the theory fails dramatically. The lifetime of the metastable A phase is measurable, typically of order minutes to hours, far faster than classical nucleation theory predicts. If the nucleation of B phase from the supercooled A phase is due to a new, rapid intrinsic mechanism that would have implications for first-order cosmological phase transitions as well as predictions for gravitational wave (GW) production in the early universe. Here we discuss studies of the AB phase transition dynamics in $^3$He, both experimental and theoretical, and show how the computational technology for cosmological phase transition can be used to simulate the dynamics of the A-B transition, support the experimental investigations of the A-B transition in the QUEST-DMC collaboration with the goal of identifying and quantifying the mechanism(s) responsible for nucleation of stable phases in ultra-pure metastable quantum phases., Comment: 34 pp, 4 figures. The symmetry-breaking first-order phase transition between superfluid phases $^3$He-A and $^3$He-B can be triggered extrinsically by ionising radiation or heterogeneous nucleation arising from the details of the sample cell construction. However, the role of potential homogeneous intrinsic nucleation mechanisms remains elusive. Discovering and resolving the intrinsic processes may have cosmological consequences, since an analogous first-order phase transition, and the production of gravitational waves, has been predicted for the very early stages of the expanding Universe in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. Here we introduce a new approach for probing the phase transition in superfluid $^3$He. The setup consists of a novel stepped-height nanofluidic sample container with close to atomically smooth walls. The $^3$He is confined in five tiny nanofabricated volumes and assayed non-invasively by NMR. Tuning of the state of $^3$He by confinement is used to isolate each of these five volumes so that the phase transitions in them can occur independently and free from any obvious sources of heterogeneous nucleation. The small volumes also ensure that the transitions triggered by ionising radiation are strongly suppressed. Here we present the preliminary measurements using this setup, showing both strong supercooling of $^3$He-A and superheating of $^3$He-B, with stochastic processes dominating the phase transitions between the two. The canonical undestanding of stellar convection has recently been put under doubt due to helioseismic results and global 3D convection simulations. This "convective conundrum" is manifested by much higher velocity amplitudes in simulations at large scales in comparison to helioseismic results, and the difficulty in reproducing the solar differential rotation and dynamo with global 3D simulations. Here some aspects of this conundrum are discussed from the viewpoint of hydrodynamic Cartesian 3D simulations targeted at testing the rotational influence and surface forcing on deep convection. Fabrication of superconducting nanomechanical resonators for quantum research, detectors and devices traditionally relies on a lithographic process, resulting in oscillators with sharp edges and a suspended length limited to a few 100 micrometres. We report a low-investment top-down approach to fabricating NbTi nanowire resonators with suspended lengths up to several millimetres and diameters down to 100 nanometres. The nanowires possess high critical currents and fields, making them a natural choice for magnetomotive actuation and sensing. This fabrication technique is independent of the substrate material, dimensions and layout and can readily be adapted to fabricate nanowire resonators from any metal or alloy with suitable ductility and yield strength. Our work thus opens access to a new class of nanomechanical devices with applications including microscopic and mesoscopic investigations of quantum fluids, detecting dark matter and fundamental materials research in one-dimensional superconductors in vacuum., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

(abridged) Context: Rotation is thought to influence the size of convective eddies and the efficiency of convective energy transport in the deep convection zones of stars. Rotationally constrained convection has been invoked to explain the lack of large-scale power in observations of solar flows. Aims: The main aims are to quantify the effects of rotation on the scale of convective eddies and velocity, the depths of convective overshoot, and the subadiabatic Deardorff layers. Methods: Three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of rotating convection in Cartesian domains were run. The results were compared with theoretical scaling results that assume a balance between Coriolis, inertial, and buoyancy (Archemedean) forces (CIA balance). Results: The scale of convective eddies decreases as rotation increases, and ultimately reaches a rotationally constrained regime consistent with the CIA balance. Using a new measure of the rotational influence on the system, it is shown that even the deep parts of the solar convection zone are not in the rotationally constrained regime. The simulations capture the slowly and rapidly rotating scaling laws predicted by theory, and the Sun appears to be in between these two regimes. Both, the overshooting depth and the extent of the Deardorff layer, decrease as rotation becomes more rapid. For sufficiently rapid rotation the Deardorff layer is absent. Conclusions: Relating the simulations with the Sun suggests that the convective scale even in the deep parts of the Sun is only mildly affected by rotation and that some other mechanism is needed to explain the lack of strong large-scale flows in the Sun. With the advent of multi-wavelength electromagnetic observations of neutron stars, spanning many decades in photon energies, from radio wavelengths up to X-rays and $\gamma$-rays, it becomes possible to significantly constrain the geometry and the location of the associated emission regions. In this work, we use results from the modelling of thermal X-ray observations of PSR~J0030+0451 from the NICER mission and phase-aligned radio and $\gamma$-ray pulse profiles to constrain the geometry of an off-centred dipole able to reproduce the light-curves in these respective bands simultaneously. To this aim, we deduce a configuration with a simple dipole off-centred from the location of the centre of the thermal X-ray hot spots and show that the geometry is compatible with independent constraints from radio and $\gamma$-ray pulsations only, leading to a fixed magnetic obliquity of $\alpha \approx 75\deg$ and a line of sight inclination angle of $\zeta \approx 54\deg$. We demonstrate that an off-centred dipole cannot be rejected by accounting for the thermal X-ray pulse profiles. Moreover, the crescent shape of one spot is interpreted as the consequence of a small scale surface dipole on top of the large scale off-centred dipole., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We review the state of the art of three dimensional numerical simulations of solar and stellar dynamos. We summarize fundamental constraints of numerical modelling and the techniques to alleviate these restrictions. Brief summary of the relevant observations that the simulations seek to capture is given. We survey the current progress of simulations of solar convection and the resulting large-scale dynamo. We continue to studies that model the Sun at different ages and to studies of stars of different masses and evolutionary stages. Both simulations and observations indicate that rotation, measured by the Rossby number which is the ratio of rotation period and convective turnover time, is a key ingredient in setting the overall level and characteristics of magnetic activity. The centrifugal force is often omitted from simulations of stellar convection either for numerical reasons or because it is assumed to be weak compared to the gravitational force. However, it might be an important factor in rapidly rotating stars, such as solar analogs, due to its $\Omega^2$ scaling, where $\Omega$ is the rotation rate of the star. We study the effects of the centrifugal force in a set of 21 semi-global stellar dynamo simulations with varying rotation rates. Included in the set are three control runs aimed at distinguishing the effects of the centrifugal force from the nonlinear evolution of the solutions. We decomposed the magnetic field into spherical harmonics and studied the migration of azimuthal dynamo waves (ADWs), the energy of different large-scale magnetic modes, and differential rotation. In the regime with the lowest rotation rates, $\Omega = 5-10\Omega_\odot$, where $\Omega_\odot$ is the rotation rate of the Sun, we see no marked changes in either the differential rotation or the magnetic field properties. For intermediate rotation, $\Omega = 20-25\Omega_\odot$, we identify an increase in the differential rotation as a function of centrifugal force. The axisymmetric magnetic energy tends to decrease with centrifugal force, while the non-axisymmetric one increases. The ADWs are also affected, especially in the propagation direction. In the most rapidly rotating set with $\Omega=30\Omega_\odot$, these changes are more pronounced, and in one case the propagation direction of the ADW changes from prograde to retrograde. The control runs suggest that the results are a consequence of the centrifugal force and not due to the details of the initial conditions or the history of the run. Turbulent motions enhance the diffusion of large-scale flows and temperature gradients. Such diffusion is often parameterized by coefficients of turbulent viscosity ($\nu_{\rm t}$) and turbulent thermal diffusivity ($\chi_{\rm t}$) that are analogous to their microscopic counterparts. We compute the turbulent diffusion coefficients by imposing large-scale velocity and temperature gradients on a turbulent flow and measuring the response of the system. We also confirm our results using experiments where the imposed gradients are allowed to decay. To achieve this, we use weakly compressible three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of isotropically forced homogeneous turbulence. We find that the turbulent viscosity and thermal diffusion, as well as their ratio the turbulent Prandtl number, ${\rm Pr}_{\rm t} = \nu_{\rm t}/\chi_{\rm t}$, approach asymptotic values at sufficiently high Reynolds and Pecl\'et numbers. We also do not find a significant dependence of ${\rm Pr}_{\rm t}$ on the microscopic Prandtl number ${\rm Pr} = \nu/\chi$. These findings are in stark contrast to results from the $k-\epsilon$ model which suggests that ${\rm Pr}_{\rm t}$ increases monotonically with decreasing ${\rm Pr}$. (abridged) Context: Late-type stars such as the Sun rotate differentially due to the interaction of turbulent convection and rotation. Aims: The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of the thermal Prandtl number on the transition from anti-solar (slow equator, fast poles) to solar-like (fast equator, slow poles) differential rotation. Methods: Three-dimensional hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic simulations in semi-global spherical wedge geometry are used to model convection zones of solar-like stars. Results: The overall convective velocity amplitude increases as the Prandtl number decreases in accordance with earlier studies. The transition from anti-solar to solar-like differential rotation is insensitive to the Prandtl number for Prandtl numbers below unity but for Prandtl numbers greater than unity, solar-like differential rotation becomes significantly harder to excite. Magnetic fields and more turbulent regimes with higher fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers help in achieving solar-like differential rotation in near-transition cases. Solar-like differential rotation occurs only in cases with radially outward angular momentum transport at the equator. The dominant contribution to such outward transport near the equator is due to prograde propagating thermal Rossby waves. Conclusions: The differential rotation is sensitive to the Prandtl number only for large Prandtl numbers in the parameter regime explored in the current study. Magnetic fields have a greater effect on the differential rotation, although the inferred presence of a small-scale dynamo does not lead to drastically different results in the present study. The dominance of the thermal Rossby waves in the simulations is puzzling given the non-detection in the Sun. M dwarfs are low-mass main-sequence stars, the most numerous type of stars in the solar neighbourhood, which are known to have significant magnetic activity. The aim of this work is to explore the dynamo solutions and magnetic fields of fully convective M dwarfs with varying magnetic Prandtl numbers ${\rm Pr_M}$, and a rotation period (${\rm P_{rot}}$) of 43 days. ${\rm Pr_M}$ is known to play an important role in the dynamo action; dynamos for low-$\rm Pr_M$ and large-$\rm Pr_M$ have very different properties. We performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) numerical simulations with the ``star-in-a-box'' model using stellar parameters for an M5 dwarf with $0.21 M_{\odot}$. We found that the dynamo solutions are sensitive to ${\rm Pr_M}$. The simulations at this rotation period present periodic cycles of the large-scale magnetic field up to ${\rm Pr_M} \leq 2$; for higher values the cycles disappear and irregular solutions to arise. Eclipsing time variations (ETVs) in post-common-envelope binaries (PCEBs) were proposed to be due to the time-varying component of the stellar gravitational quadrupole moment. This is suggested to be produced by changes in the stellar structure due to an internal redistribution of angular momentum and the effect of the centrifugal force. We examined this hypothesis and present 3D simulations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) performed with the {\sc Pencil Code}. We modeled the stellar dynamo for a solar-mass star with angular velocities of 20 and 30 times solar. We included and varied the strength of the centrifugal force and compared the results with reference simulations without the centrifugal force and with a simulation in which its effect is enhanced. The centrifugal force causes perturbations in the evolution of the numerical model, so that the outcome in the details becomes different as a result of nonlinear evolution. While the average density profile is unaffected by the centrifugal force, a relative change in the density difference between high latitudes and the equator of $\sim10^{-4}$ is found. The power spectrum of the convective velocity is found to be more sensitive to the angular velocity than to the strength of the centrifugal force. The quadrupole moment of the stars includes a fluctuating and a time-independent component, which vary with the rotation rate. As very similar behavior is produced in absence of the centrifugal force, we conclude that it is not the main ingredient for producing the time-averaged and fluctuating quadrupole moment of the star. In a real physical system, we thus expect contributions from both components, that is, from the time-dependent gravitational force from the variation in the quadrupole term and from the spin-orbit coupling that is due to the persistent part of the quadrupole., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Magnetohydrodynamic star-in-a-box simulations of convection and dynamos in a solar-like star with different rotation rates are presented. These simulations produce solar-like differential rotation with a fast equator and slow poles, and magnetic activity that resembles that of the Sun with equatorward migrating activity at the surface. Furthermore, the ratio of rotation to cycle period is almost constant as the rotation period decreases in the limited sample considered here. This is reminiscent of the suggested inactive branch of stars from observations and differs from most earlier simulation results from spherical shell models. While the exact excitation mechanism of the dynamos in the current simulations is not yet clear, it is plausible that the greater freedom that the magnetic field has due to the inclusion of the radiative core and regions exterior to the star are important in shaping the dynamo., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to AAS journals. Observing simultaneously pulsed radio and gamma-ray emission from these stars helps to constrain the geometry and radiation mechanisms within their magnetosphere and to localize the multiple photon production sites. In this paper, we fit the time-aligned gamma-ray light-curves of young radio-loud gamma-ray pulsars. We assume a dipole force-free magnetosphere where radio photons emanate from high altitude above the polar caps and gamma-rays originate from outside the light-cylinder, within the striped wind current sheet. We compute a full atlas of radio and gamma-ray pulse profiles depending on the magnetic axis obliquity and line of sight inclination with respect to the neutron star rotation axis. By applying a $\rchi^2$ fitting technique, we are able to pin down accurately the magnetosphere geometry. Further constrains are obtained from radio polarization measurement following the rotating vector model, including aberration and retardation effects. We found a good agreement between our model and the time-aligned single or double peaked gamma-ray pulsar observations. We deduce the magnetic inclination angle and the observer line of sight with respect to the rotation axis within a small error bar. The distinction between radio-loud or radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars or only radio pulsars can entirely be related to the geometry of the associated emitting regions. The high altitude polar cap model combined with the striped wind represents a minimalistic approach able to reproduce a wealth of gamma-ray pulse profiles for young radio pulsars. A time crystal is a macroscopic quantum system in periodic motion in its ground state, stable only if isolated from energy exchange with the environment. For this reason, coupling separate time crystals is challenging, and time crystals in a dynamic environment have yet not been studied. In our experiments, two coupled time crystals made of spin-wave quasiparticles (magnons) form a macroscopic two-level system. The two levels evolve in time as determined intrinsically by a nonlinear feedback. Magnons move from the ground level to the excited level driven by the Landau-Zener effect, combined with Rabi population oscillations. We thus demonstrate how to arrange spontaneous dynamics between interacting time crystals. Our experiments allow access to every aspect and detail of the interaction in a single run of the experiment, inviting technological exploitation-- potentially even at room temperature., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

(abridged) Context: The ratio of kinematic viscosity to thermal diffusivity, the Prandtl number, is much smaller than unity in stellar convection zones. Aims: To study the statistics of convective flows and energy transport as functions of the Prandtl number. Methods: Three-dimensional numerical simulations convection in Cartesian geometry are used. The convection zone (CZ) is embedded between two stably stratified layers. Statistics and transport properties of up- and downflows are studied separately. Results: The rms velocity increases with decreasing Prandtl number. At the same time the filling factor of downflows decreases and leads to stronger downflows at lower Prandtl numbers, and to a strong dependence of overshooting on the Prandtl number. Velocity power spectra do not show marked changes as a function of Prandtl number. At the highest Reynolds numbers the velocity power spectra are compatible with the Bolgiano-Obukhov $k^{-11/5}$ scaling. The horizontally averaged convected energy flux ($\overline{F}_{\rm conv}$) is independent of the Prandtl number within the CZ. However, the upflows (downflows) are the dominant contribution to the convected flux at low (high) Prandtl number. These results are similar to those from Rayleigh-Ben\'ard convection in the low Prandtl number regime where convection is vigorously turbulent but inefficient at transporting energy. Conclusions: The current results indicate a strong dependence of convective overshooting and energy flux on the Prandtl number. Numerical simulations of astrophysical convection often use Prandtl number of unity. The possibility to detect circumbinary planets and to study stellar magnetic fields through eclipsing time variations (ETVs) in binary stars has sparked an increase of interest in this area of research. We revisit the connection between stellar magnetic fields and the gravitational quadrupole moment $Q_{xx}$ and compare different dynamo-generated ETV models with our simulations. We present magnetohydrodynamical simulations of solar mass stars with rotation periods of 8.3, 1.2, and 0.8 days and perform a detailed analysis of the magnetic and quadrupole moment using spherical harmonic decomposition. The extrema of $Q_{xx}$ are associated with changes in the magnetic field structure. This is evident in the simulation with a rotation period of 1.2 days. Its magnetic field has a more complex behavior than in the other models, as the large-scale nonaxisymmetric field dominates throughout the simulation and the axisymmetric component is predominantly hemispheric. This triggers variations in the density field that follow the magnetic field asymmetry with respect to the equator, affecting the $zz$ component of the inertia tensor, and thus modulating $Q_{xx}$. The magnetic field of the two other runs are less variable in time and more symmetric with respect to the equator, such that the variations in the density are weaker, and therefore only small variations in $Q_{xx}$ are seen. If interpreted via the classical Applegate mechanism (tidal locking), the quadrupole moment variations obtained in the current simulations are about two orders of magnitude below those deduced from observations of post-common-envelope binaries. (abridged) Context: Main-sequence late-type stars with masses less than $0.35 M_\odot$ are fully convective. Aims: The goal is to study convection, differential rotation, and dynamos as functions of rotation in fully convective stars. Methods: Three-dimensional hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations with a star-in-a-box model, where a spherical star is immersed inside of a Cartesian cube, are used. The model corresponds to a $0.2M_\odot$ M5 dwarf. Rotation periods ($P_{\rm rot}$) between 4.3 and 430 days are explored. Results: The slowly rotating model with $P_{\rm rot}=430$ days produces anti-solar differential rotation with a slow equator and fast poles, along with predominantly axisymmetric quasi-steady large-scale magnetic fields. For intermediate rotation ($P_{\rm rot}=144$ and $43$ days) differential rotation is solar-like (fast equator, slow poles) and large-scale magnetic fields are mostly axisymmetric and either quasi-stationary or cyclic. The latter occurs in a similar parameter regime as in other numerical studies in spherical shells, and the cycle period is similar to observed cycles in fully convective stars with comparable $P_{\rm rot}$. In the rapid rotation regime the differential rotation is weak and the large-scale magnetic fields are increasingly non-axisymmetric with a dominating $m=1$ mode. This large-scale non-axisymmetric field also exhibits azimuthal dynamo waves. Conclusions: The results of the star-in-a-box models agree with simulations of partially convective late-type stars in spherical shells in that the transitions in differential rotation and dynamo regimes occur at similar rotational regimes in terms of the Coriolis (inverse Rossby) number. Since the launch of the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, several hundred gamma-ray pulsars have been discovered, some being radio-loud and some radio-quiet with time-aligned radio and gamma-ray light curves. In the second Fermi Pulsar Catalogue, 117 new gamma-ray pulsars have been reported based on three years of data collected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi satellite, providing a wealth of information such as the peak separation~$\Delta$ of the gamma-ray pulsations and the radio lag~$\delta$ between the gamma-ray and radio pulses. We selected several radio-loud millisecond gamma-ray pulsars with period~$P$ in the range 2-6~ms and showing a double peak in their gamma-ray profiles. We attempted to constrain the geometry of their magnetosphere, namely the magnetic axis and line-of-sight inclination angles for each of these systems. We applied a force-free dipole magnetosphere from the stellar surface up to the striped wind region -- well outside the light cylinder -- to fit the observed pulse profiles in gamma-rays, consistently with their phase alignment with the radio profile. In deciding whether a fitted curve is reasonable or not, we employed a least-square method to compare the observed gamma-ray intensity with that found from our model, emphasising the amplitude of the gamma-ray peaks, their separation, and the phase lag between radio and gamma-ray peaks. We obtained the best fits and reasonable parameters in agreement with observations for ten millisecond pulsars. Eventually, we constrained the geometry of each pulsar described by the magnetic inclination~$\alpha$ and the light-of-sight inclination~$\zeta$. Main sequence stars and compact objects like white dwarfs and neutron stars are usually embedded in magnetic fields that strongly deviate from a pure dipole located right at the stellar centre. An off-centred dipole can sometimes better adjust existing data and offer a simple geometric picture to include multipolar fields. However, such configurations are usually to restrictive, limiting multipolar components to strength less than the underlying dipole. In this paper, we consider the most general lowest order multipolar combination given by a dipole and a quadrupole magnetic field association in vacuum. Following the general formalism for multipolar field computations, we derive the full electromagnetic field outside a rotating quadridipole. Exact analytical expressions for the Poynting flux and the electromagnetic kick are given. Such geometry is useful to study the magnetosphere of neutron stars for which more and more compelling observations reveals hints for at least quadridipolar fields. One interpretation of the activity and magnetism of late-type stars is that these both intensify with decreasing Rossby number up to a saturation level, suggesting that stellar dynamos depend on both rotation and convective turbulence. Some studies have claimed, however, that rotation alone suffices to parametrise this scaling adequately. Here, we tackle the question of the relevance of turbulence to stellar dynamos by including evolved, post main sequence stars in the analysis of the rotation-activity relation. These stars rotate very slowly compared with main sequence stars, but exhibit similar activity levels. We show that the two evolutionary stages fall together in the rotation-activity diagram and form a single sequence in the unsaturated regime in relation only to Rossby numbers derived from stellar models, confirming earlier preliminary results that relied on a more simplistic parametrisation of the convective turnover time. This mirrors recent results of fully convective M dwarfs, which likewise fall on the same rotation-activity sequence as partially convective solar-type stars. Quantum time crystals are systems characterised by spontaneously emerging periodic order in the time domain. A range of such phases has been reported. The concept has even been discussed in popular literature, and deservedly so: while the first speculation on a phase of broken time translation symmetry did not use the name "time crystal", it was later adopted from 1980's popular culture. For the physics community, however, the ultimate qualification of a new concept is its ability to provide predictions and insight. Confirming that time crystals manifest the basic dynamics of quantum mechanics is a necessary step in that direction. We study two adjacent quantum time crystals experimentally. Abridged. Kinetic plasma simulations are nowadays commonly used to study a wealth of non-linear behaviours and properties in laboratory and space plasmas. In particular, in high-energy physics and astrophysics, the plasma usually evolves in ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced by intense laser beams for the former or by rotating compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes for the latter. In these ultra-strong electromagnetic fields, the gyro-period is several orders of magnitude smaller than the timescale on which we desire to investigate the plasma evolution. Some approximations are required like for instance artificially decreasing the electromagnetic field strength which is certainly not satisfactory. The main flaw of this downscaling is that it cannot reproduce particle acceleration to ultra-relativistic speeds with Lorentz factor above $\gamma \approx 10^3-10^4$. In this paper, we design a new algorithm able to catch particle motion and acceleration to Lorentz factor up to $10^{15}$ or even higher by using Lorentz boosts to special frames where the electric and magnetic field are parallel. Assuming that these fields are locally uniform in space and constant in time, we solve analytically the equation of motion in a tiny region smaller than the length scale of the spatial and temporal gradient of the field., Comment: New version with 1D PIC code tests and new references

Eclipsing time variations have been observed for a wide range of binary systems, including post-common-envelope binaries. A frequently proposed explanation, apart from the possibility of having a third body, is the effect of magnetic activity, which may alter the internal structure of the secondary star, particularly its quadrupole moment, and thereby cause quasi-periodic oscillations. Here we present two compressible non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the magnetic dynamo in a solar mass star, one of them with three times the solar rotation rate ("slow rotator"), the other one with twenty times the solar rotation rate ("rapid rotator"), to account for the high rotational velocities in close binary systems. For the slow rotator, we find that both the magnetic field and the stellar quadrupole moment change in a quasi-periodic manner, leading to O-C (observed - corrected times of the eclipse) variations of ~0.025 s. For the rapid rotator, the behavior of the magnetic field as well as the quadrupole moment changes become considerably more complex, due to the less coherent dynamo solution. The resulting O-C variations are of the order 0.13 s. The observed system V471~Tau shows two modes of eclipsing time variations, with amplitudes of 151 s and 20 s, respectively. However, the current simulations may not capture all relevant effects due to the neglect of the centrifugal force and self-gravity. Considering the model limitations and that the rotation of V471 Tau is still a factor of 2.5 faster than our rapid rotator, it may be conceivable to reach the observed magnitudes., Comment: 16 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication with MNRAS

The $\Lambda$ effect describes a rotation-induced non-diffusive contribution to the Reynolds stress. It is commonly held responsible for maintaining the observed differential rotation of the Sun and other late-type stars. Here the sensitivity of the $\Lambda$ effect to small-scale magnetic fields and compressibility is studied by means of forced turbulence simulations either with anisotropic forcing in fully periodic cubes or in density-stratified domains with isotropic forcing. Effects of small-scale magnetic fields are studied in cases where the magnetic fields are self-consistently generated by a small-scale dynamo. The results show that small-scale magnetic fields lead to a quenching of the $\Lambda$ effect which is milder than in cases where also a large-scale field is present. The effect of compressibility on the $\Lambda$ effect is negligible in the range of Mach numbers from 0.015 to 0.8. (abridged) Context: Turbulent diffusion of large-scale flows and magnetic fields play major roles in many astrophysical systems. Aims: Our goal is to compute turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity, relevant for diffusing large-scale flows and magnetic fields, respectively, and their ratio, the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number, ${\rm Pm}_{\rm t}$, for isotropically forced homogeneous turbulence. Methods: We use simulations of forced turbulence in fully periodic cubes composed of isothermal gas with an imposed large-scale sinusoidal shear flow. Turbulent viscosity is computed either from the resulting Reynolds stress or from the decay rate of the large-scale flow. Turbulent magnetic diffusivity is computed using the test-field method. The scale dependence of the coefficients is studied by varying the wavenumber of the imposed sinusoidal shear and test fields. Results: We find that turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity are in general of the same order of magnitude. Furthermore, the turbulent viscosity depends on the fluid Reynolds number (${\rm Re}$) and scale separation ratio of turbulence. The scale dependence of the turbulent viscosity is found to be well approximated by a Lorentzian. The results for the turbulent transport coefficients appear to converge at sufficiently high values of ${\rm Re}$ and the scale separation ratio. However, a weak decreasing trend is found even at the largest values of ${\rm Re}$. The turbulent magnetic Prandtl number converges to a value that is slightly below unity for large ${\rm Re}$ whereas for small ${\rm Re}$, we find values between 0.5 and 0.6. Conclusions: The turbulent magnetic diffusivity is in general consistently higher than the turbulent viscosity. (abridged) Context: Convective motions overshooting to regions that are formally convectively stable cause extended mixing. Aims: To determine the scaling of overshooting depth ($d_{\rm os}$) at the base of the convection zone as a function of imposed energy flux ($\mathscr{F}_{\rm n}$) and to estimate the extent of overshooting at the base of the solar convection zone. Methods: Three-dimensional Cartesian simulations of compressible non-rotating convection with unstable and stable layers are used. The simulations use either a fixed heat conduction profile or a temperature and density dependent formulation based on Kramers opacity law. The simulations cover a range of almost four orders of magnitude in the imposed flux. Results: A smooth heat conduction profile (either fixed or through Kramers opacity law) leads to a relatively shallow power law with $d_{\rm os}\propto \mathscr{F}_{\rm n}^{0.08}$ for low $\mathscr{F}_{\rm n}$. A fixed step-profile of the heat conductivity at the bottom of the convection zone leads to a somewhat steeper dependency with $d_{\rm os}\propto \mathscr{F}_{\rm n}^{0.12}$. Experiments with and without subgrid-scale entropy diffusion revealed a strong dependence on the effective Prandtl number which is likely to explain the steep power laws as a function of $\mathscr{F}_{\rm n}$ reported in the literature. Furthermore, changing the heat conductivity artificially below the convection zone is shown to lead to substantial underestimation of overshooting depth. Conclusions: Extrapolating from the results obtained with smooth heat conductivity profiles suggest that the overshooting depth for the solar flux is of the order of $0.2$ pressure scale heights at the base of the convection zone which is two to four times higher than estimates from helioseismology., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, published in Astron. Recent numerical work in helioseismology has shown that a periodically varying subsurface magnetic field leads to a fanning of the $f$-mode, which emerges from the density jump at the surface. In an attempt to model a more realistic situation, we now modulate this periodic variation with an envelope, giving thus more emphasis on localized bipolar magnetic structures in the middle of the domain. Some notable findings are: (i) compared to the purely hydrodynamic case, the strength of the $f$-mode is significantly larger at high horizontal wavenumbers $k$, but the fanning is weaker for the localized subsurface magnetic field concentrations investigated here than the periodic ones studied earlier; (ii) when the strength of the magnetic field is enhanced at a fixed depth below the surface, the fanning of the $f$-mode in the $k\omega$ diagram increases proportionally in such a way that the normalized $f$-mode strengths remain nearly the same in different such cases; (iii) the unstable Bloch modes reported previously in case of harmonically varying magnetic fields are now completely absent when more realistic localized magnetic field concentrations are imposed beneath the surface, thus suggesting that the Bloch modes are unlikely to be supported during most phases of the solar cycle; (iv) the $f$-mode strength appears to depend also on the depth of magnetic field concentrations such that it shows a relative decrement when the maximum of the magnetic field is moved to a deeper layer. We argue that detections of $f$-mode perturbations such as those being explored here could be effective tracers of solar magnetic fields below the photosphere before these are directly detectable as visible manifestations in terms of active regions or sunspots., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, revised version submitted to GAFD special issue on "Physics and Algorithms of the Pencil Code"

We test the sensitivity of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulent convection simulations with respect to Mach number, thermal and magnetic boundary conditions, and the centrifugal force. We find that varying the luminosity, which also controls the Mach number, has only a minor effect on the large-scale dynamics. A similar conclusion can also be drawn from the comparison of two formulations of the lower magnetic boundary condition with either vanishing electric field or current density. The centrifugal force has an effect on the solutions, but only if its magnitude with respect to acceleration due to gravity is by two orders of magnitude greater than in the Sun. Finally, we find that the parameterisation of the photospheric physics, either by an explicit cooling term or enhanced radiative diffusion, is more important than the thermal boundary condition. In particular, runs with cooling tend to lead to more anisotropic convection and stronger deviations from the Taylor-Proudman state. Using a recently developed two-scale formalism to determine the magnetic helicity spectrum (Brandenburg et al. 2017), we analyze synoptic vector magnetograms built with data from the Vector Spectromagnetograph (VSM) instrument on the \emph{Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun} (SOLIS) telescope during January 2010-July 2016. In contrast to an earlier study using only three Carrington rotations, our analysis includes 74 synoptic Carrington rotation maps. We recover here bihelical spectra at different phases of solar cycle~24, where the net magnetic helicity in the majority of the data is consistent with a large-scale dynamo with helical turbulence operating in the Sun. We consider the effect of a subadiabatic layer at the base of the convection zone on convection itself and the associated large-scale dynamos in spherical wedge geometry. We use a heat conduction prescription based on the Kramers opacity law which allows the depth of the convection zone to dynamically adapt to changes in the physical characteristics such as rotation rate and magnetic fields. We find that the convective heat transport is strongly concentrated toward the equatorial and polar regions in the cases without a substantial radiative layer below the convection zone. The presence of a stable layer below the convection zone significantly reduces the anisotropy of radial enthalpy transport. Furthermore, the dynamo solutions are sensitive to subtle changes in the convection zone structure. We find that the kinetic helicity changes sign in the deeper parts of the convection zone at high latitudes in all runs. Small-scale dynamo action is often held responsible for the generation of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We aim to determine the excitation conditions and saturation level of small-scale dynamos in non-rotating turbulent convection at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. We use high resolution direct numerical simulations of weakly stratified turbulent convection. We find that the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo excitation increases as the magnetic Prandtl number is decreased, which might suggest that small-scale dynamo action is not automatically evident in bodies with small magnetic Prandtl numbers as the Sun. As a function of the magnetic Reynolds number (${\rm Rm}$), the growth rate of the dynamo is consistent with an ${\rm Rm}^{1/2}$ scaling. Context: Differential rotation in stars is driven by turbulent transport of angular momentum. Aims: To measure and parametrize the non-diffusive contribution to turbulent stress, known as $\Lambda$ effect, and its quenching as a function of rotation and magnetic field. Methods: Simulations of homogeneous, anisotropically forced turbulence in fully periodic cubes are used to extract the turbulent Reynolds and Maxwell stresses. Magnetic fields are introduced by imposing a uniform large-scale field on the system. Turbulent transport coefficients pertaining to the $\Lambda$ effect are obtained by fitting. Results: The numerical results agree qualitatively with analytic ones at slow rotation and low Reynolds numbers. This entails that vertical (horizontal) transport is downward (equatorward). The existence of a significant meridional $\Lambda$ effect is confirmed. Large-scale vorticity generation is found at rapid rotation when the Reynolds number exceeds a threshold value. The $\Lambda$ effect is severely quenched by large-scale magnetic fields due to the tendency of the Reynolds and Maxwell stresses to cancel each other. Rotational (magnetic) quenching of $\Lambda$ occurs at more rapid rotation (at lower field strength) in simulations than in theory. Conclusions: The current results largely confirm the earlier theoretical results but they also offer new insights: the non-negligible meridional $\Lambda$ effect possibly plays a role in the maintenance of meridional circulation in stars and the appearance of large-scale vortices raises the question of their effect on the angular momentum transport in stars. The results regarding magnetic quenching are consistent with the strong decrease of differential rotation in recent semi-global simulations and highlight the importance of including magnetic effects in differential rotation models. The "Square Kilometre Array" (SKA) is a large international radio telescope project characterised, as suggested by its name, by a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometre, and consisting of several interferometric arrays to observe at metric and centimetric wavelengths. The deployment of the SKA will take place in two sites, in South Africa and Australia, and in two successive phases. From its Phase 1, the SKA will be one of the most formidable scientific machines ever deployed by mankind, and by far the most impressive in terms of data throughput and required computing power. We seek to understand the transition from nearly axisymmetric configurations at solar rotation rates to nonaxisymmetric configurations for rapid rotation using 3D numerical simulations of turbulent convection and considering rotation rates between 1 and 30 times the solar value. We find a transition from axi- to nonaxisymmetric solutions at around 1.8 times the solar rotation rate. This transition coincides with a change in the rotation profile from antisolar- to solar-like differential rotation with a faster equator and slow poles. In the solar-like rotation regime, the field configuration consists of an axisymmetric oscillatory field accompanied by an m=1 azimuthal mode (two active longitudes), which also shows temporal variability. At slow (rapid) rotation, the axisymmetric (nonaxisymmetric) mode dominates. The axisymmetric mode produces latitudinal dynamo waves with polarity reversals, while the nonaxisymmetric mode often exhibits a drift in the rotating reference frame and the strength of the active longitudes changes cyclically over time between the different hemispheres. Most of the obtained dynamo solutions exhibit cyclic variability either caused by latitudinal or azimuthal dynamo waves. In an activity-period diagram, the cycle lengths normalized by the rotation period form two different populations as a function of rotation rate or magnetic activity level. The slowly rotating axisymmetric population lies close to what is called the inactive branch in observations, while the rapidly rotating models are close to the superactive branch with a declining cycle to rotation frequency ratio with increasing rotation rate. We can successfully reproduce the transition from axi- to nonaxisymmetric dynamo solutions for high rotation rates, but high-resolution simulations are required to limit the effect of rotational quenching of convection at rotation rates above 20 times the solar value., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We focus on implementing and optimizing a sixth-order finite-difference solver for simulating compressible fluids on a GPU using third-order Runge-Kutta integration. Since graphics processing units perform well in data-parallel tasks, this makes them an attractive platform for fluid simulation. However, high-order stencil computation is memory-intensive with respect to both main memory and the caches of the GPU. We present two approaches for simulating compressible fluids using 55-point and 19-point stencils. We seek to reduce the requirements for memory bandwidth and cache size in our methods by using cache blocking and decomposing a latency-bound kernel into several bandwidth-bound kernels. Our fastest implementation is bandwidth-bound and integrates $343$ million grid points per second on a Tesla K40t GPU, achieving a $3.6 \times$ speedup over a comparable hydrodynamics solver benchmarked on two Intel Xeon E5-2690v3 processors. Our alternative GPU implementation is latency-bound and achieves the rate of $168$ million updates per second., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

We present numerical simulations of hydrodynamic overshooting convection in local Cartesian domains. We find that a substantial fraction of the lower part of the convection zone (CZ) is stably stratified according to the Schwarzschild criterion while the enthalpy flux is outward directed. This occurs when the heat conduction profile at the bottom of the CZ is smoothly varying, based either on a Kramers-like opacity prescription as a function of temperature and density or a static profile of a similar shape. We show that the subadiabatic layer arises due to nonlocal energy transport by buoyantly driven downflows in the upper parts of the CZ. Analysis of the force balance of the upflows and downflows confirms that convection is driven by cooling at the surface. We find that the commonly used prescription for the convective enthalpy flux being proportional to the negative entropy gradient does not hold in the stably stratified layers where the flux is positive. We demonstrate the existence of a non-gradient contribution to the enthalpy flux, which is estimated to be important throughout the convective layer. A quantitative analysis of downflows indicates a transition from a tree-like structure where smaller downdrafts merge into larger ones in the upper parts to a structure in the deeper parts where a height-independent number of strong downdrafts persist. Relativistic strongly magnetized plasmas are produced in laboratories thanks to state-of-the-art laser technology but can naturally be found around compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes. Detailed studies of the behaviour of relativistic plasmas require accurate computations able to catch the full spatial and temporal dynamics of the system. Numerical simulations of ultra-relativistic plasmas face severe restrictions due to limitations in the maximum possible Lorentz factors that current algorithm can reproduce to good accuracy. In order to circumvent this flaw and repel the limit to $\gamma\approx10^9$, we design a new fully implicit scheme to solve the relativistic particle equation of motion in an external electromagnetic field using a three dimensional Cartesian geometry. We show some examples of numerical integrations in constant electromagnetic fields to prove the efficiency of our algorithm. The code is also able to follow the electric drift motion for high Lorentz factors. Radio polarization measurements of pulsed emission from pulsars offer a valuable insight into the basic geometry of the neutron star: inclination angle between the magnetic and rotation axis and inclination of the line of sight. So far, all studies about radio polarization focused on the standard rotating vector model with the underlying assumption of a centred dipole. In this letter, we extend this model to the most general off-centred dipole configuration and give an exact closed analytic expression for the phase-resolved polarization angle. It is shown that contrary to the rotating vector model, for an off-centred dipole, the polarization angle also depends on the emission altitude. Although the fitting parameter space increases from two to six (position of the dipole, altitude and shift of the zero phase), statistical analysis should remain tractable. Observations revealing an evolution of the polarization angle with frequency would undeniably furnish a strong hint for the presence of a decentred magnetic dipole in neutron stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters

Neutron stars are fascinating astrophysical objects immersed in strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields, at the edge of our current theories. These stars manifest themselves mostly as pulsars, emitting a timely very stable and regular electromagnetic signal. Even though discovered almost fifty years ago, they still remain mysterious compact stellar objects. In this review, we summarize the most fundamental theoretical aspects of neutron star magnetospheres and winds. The main competing models susceptible to explain their radiative properties like multi-wavelength pulse shapes and spectra and the underlying physical processes such as pair creation and radiation mechanisms are scrutinized. A global but still rather qualitative picture emerges slowly thanks to recent advances in numerical simulations on the largest scales. However considerations about pulsar magnetospheres remain speculative. For instance the exact composition of the magnetospheric plasma is not yet known. Is it solely filled with a mixture of $e^\pm$~leptons, or does it contain a non negligible fraction of protons and/or ions? Actually, is it almost entirely filled or mostly empty except for some small anecdotal plasma filled regions? Answers to these questions will strongly direct the description of the magnetosphere to seemingly contradictory results leading sometimes to inconsistencies. Nevertheless, account are given to the latest developments in the theory of pulsar magnetospheres and winds, the existence of a possible electrosphere and physical insight obtained from related observational signatures of multi-wavelength pulsed emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Plasma Physics

When a neutron star forms, after the collapse of its progenitor, a strong magnetic field survives in its interior. This magnetic topology is usually assumed to be well approximated by a dipole located right at the centre of the star. However, there is no particular reason why this dipole should be attached to this very special point. A slight shift from the stellar centre could have strong implications for the surrounding electromagnetic field configuration leading to clear observational signatures. We study the effect of the most general off-centred dipole anchored in the neutron star interior. Exact analytical solutions are given in vacuum outside the star to any order of accuracy in the small parameter $\epsilon = d/R$, where $d$ is the displacement of the dipole from the stellar centre and $R$ the neutron star radius. As a simple diagnostic of this decentred dipole, the spin-down luminosity and the torque exerted on its crust are computed to the lowest leading order in~$\epsilon$. Electromagnetic waves arise in many area of physics. Solutions are difficult to find in the general case. In this paper, we numerically integrate Maxwell equations in a 3D spherical polar coordinate system. Straightforward finite difference methods would lead to a coordinate singularity along the polar axis. Spectral methods are better suited to deal with such artificial singularities related to the choice of a coordinate system. When the radiating object is rotating like for instance a star, special classes of solutions to Maxwell equations are worthwhile to study such as quasi-stationary regimes. Moreover, in high-energy astrophysics, strong gravitational and magnetic fields are present especially around rotating neutron stars. In order to study such systems, we designed an algorithm to solve the time-dependent Maxwell equations in spherical polar coordinates including general relativity as well as quantum electrodynamical corrections to leading order. As a diagnostic, we compute the spindown luminosity expected from these stars and compare it to the classical i.e. non relativistic and non quantum mechanical results. It is shown that quantum electrodynamics leads to an irrelevant change in the spindown luminosity even for magnetic field around the critical value of $\numprint{4.4e9}$~\si{\tesla}. Therefore the braking index remains close to its value for a point dipole in vacuum namely $n=3$. The same conclusion holds for a general-relativistic quantum electrodynamically corrected force-free magnetosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate dynamo action in global compressible solar-like convective dynamos in the framework of mean-field theory. We simulate a solar-type star in a wedge-shaped spherical shell, where the interplay between convection and rotation self-consistently drives a large-scale dynamo. To analyze the dynamo mechanism we apply the test-field method for azimuthally ($\phi$) averaged fields to determine the 27 turbulent transport coefficients of the electromotive force, of which six are related to the $\alpha$ tensor. This method has previously been used either in simulations in Cartesian coordinates or in the geodynamo context and is applied here for the first time to fully compressible simulations of solar-like dynamos. We find that the $\phi\phi$-component of the $\alpha$ tensor does not follow the profile expected from that of kinetic helicity. The turbulent pumping velocities significantly alter the effective mean flows acting on the magnetic field and therefore challenge the flux transport dynamo concept. All coefficients are significantly affected by dynamically important magnetic fields. Quenching as well as enhancement are being observed. This leads to a modulation of the coefficients with the activity cycle. The temporal variations are found to be comparable to the time-averaged values and seem to be responsible for a nonlinear feedback on the magnetic field generation. Magnetized neutron stars are privileged places where strong electromagnetic fields as high as $\BQ=4.4\times10^9$~T exist, giving rise to non-linear corrections to Maxwell equations described by quantum electrodynamics (QED). These corrections need to be included to the general relativistic (GR) description of a magnetic dipole supposed to be anchored in the neutron star. In this paper, these QED and GR perturbations to the standard flat space-time dipole are calculated to the lowest order in the fine structure constant~$\alpha_{\rm sf}$ and to any order in the ratio $\Rs/R$ where $R$ is the neutron star radius and $\Rs$ its Schwarzschild radius. Following our new 3+1~formalism developed in a previous work, we compute the multipolar non-linear corrections to this dipole and demonstrate the presence of a small dipolar~$\ell=1$ and hexapolar~$\ell=3$ component., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal
