This study aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of Mol in Mtx-induced liver toxicity in rats.Materials and methods: Forty Wistar albino rats were equally divided into five groups: control, Mol, Mtx, Mol–Mtx, and Mtx–Mol. Following treatment, the animals were sacrificed, and liver tissue samples were histopathologically evaluated using Roening grading and Bcl-2 antibody staining. Tissue oxidants, antioxidants, and serum transaminases were measured and statistically compared across all groups.Results: No hepatic fibrosis or steatosis was observed in any of the groups. In the Mtx group, grade 2 liver injury and score 2 Bcl-2 antibody staining were observed; however, in the Mol–Mtx group, these were lower (grade 1, score 1). There were no statistically significant differences in serum transaminase levels among groups. Malondialdehyde levels were higher in all rats that received Mtx, but no differences in myeloperoxidase levels were observed among the groups. Levels of tissue antioxidants, including superoxide dismutase, glutathione (GSH) peroxidase (GSH-Px), and reduced GSH, were significantly higher in the Mol-treated and Mol pre-treated groups. Catalase (CAT) levels were elevated in all Mol-treated groups, but only in that group were CAT levels statistically significantly higher than in the control group.Conclusion: Our results suggest that some oxidant levels could increase following Mtx administration in the liver, possibly contributing to liver damage, whereas Mol could mitigate the histopathological and biochemical effects of hepatotoxicity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cinnamon bark essential oil (CBO) on analgesia, motor activity, balance, and coordination in rats with sciatic nerve damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were divided into three groups as simply randomized. The right sciatic nerve (RSN) of the Sham group was explored. Only vehicle solution was applied for 28 days. The RSN of the sciatic nerve injury (SNI) group was explored. Damage was created by unilateral clamping, and vehicle solution was applied for 28 days. The RSN of the sciatic nerve injury+cinnamon bark essential oil (SNI+CBO) group was explored. SNI was created by unilateral clamping and CBO was applied for 28 days. In the experiment study, motor activity, balance, and coordination measurements were made with rotarod and accelerod tests. A hot plate test was performed for analgesia measurements. Histopathology studies were carried out with the sciatic nerve tissues. RESULTS: In the rotarod test, there was a statistically significant difference between the SNI group and the SNI+CBO group (p<0.05). According to the accelerod test findings, there was a statistically significant difference between the SNI group with the Sham and SNI+CBO groups. In the hot plate test, there was a statistically significant difference between the SNI group with the Sham and SNI+CBO groups (p<0.05). In comparison to the Sham group and the SNI group, the SNI+CBO group was shown to have the greatest expression level of vimentin. CONCLUSIONS: We have concluded that CBO can be used as an adjuvant treatment in cases of SNI, increased pain, nociception, impaired balance, motor activity, and coordination. Primary or metastatic hepatic malignancies are common. Partial hepatectomy (PH) is the primary treatment for both benign and malignant hepatic neoplasms; it also is used for living donor liver transplantation. The regenerative potential of the liver after PH is 70–80% in humans. We investigated the protective and therapeutic effects of agomelatine (AGM) on rat liver regeneration following PH. We used 32 rats distributed equally into four groups: group 1, sham control; group 2, PH group; group 3, administered 20 mg/kg AGM orally once/day for 7 days following PH; group 4, administered 20 mg/kg AGM orally once/day 3 days before and 7 days following PH for 10 days. Liver samples were analyzed for antioxidants and free radicals. Tissue samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin to assess histopathological status and stained immunohistochemically for Ki-67. We found that PH reduced antioxidant enzymes and increased tissue reactive oxygen species, whereas AGM treatment had the opposite effect on these parameters. Our biochemical and histopathological findings were consistent. PH caused sinusoid congestion and dilation. Intensity of Ki-67 immunostaining of hepatocytes was increased in group 2, whereas these were reduced in group 4. Intensity of Ki-67 immunostaining of hepatocytes was increased in group 2, whereas it was reduced in the group 4 compared to group 1. We found that AGM was hepatoprotective following PH due to its antioxidant and free radical scavenger properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Prolidase is a manganese (Mn)-dependent cytosolic exopeptidase that degrades imidodipeptides with C-terminal proline or hydroxyproline. Prolidase recycling from imidodipeptides plays a critical role in collagen resynthesis and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling. Following an increase in gonadotropins, ovarian and follicular collagen undergo substantial degradation. Abnormal ovarian ECM composition is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to examine prolidase activity in the serum and follicular fluid (FF) of women undergoing in vitro fertilisation/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) treatment, comparing those with PCOS to those with normal ovarian function.Methods: This prospective study enrolled 50 participants, of whom 44 were included. PCOS diagnosis followed the Rotterdam consensus criteria, with 20 patients constituting the study group. The control group comprised 24 individuals with mild-to-moderate male infertility. Prolidase enzyme activity in serum and FF was measured using the Chinard reagent via spectrophotometric analysis and compared between the groups.Results: Serum and FF prolidase levels were significantly lower in patients with PCOS (p 0.05). OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate the potential beneficial effects of thymoquinone (TQ) on brain tissue based on biochemical and histopathological analyses in cisplatin (CIS) treated rats with central nervous system (CNS) neurotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups with 8 rats in each group (n:8). Group 1: (Control), saline was administered for 3 days at a volume of 0.5 ml per day intraperitoneal (i.p.). Group 2: (CIS Group), one dose of CIS was administered (7 mg/kg i.p.). Group 3: (TQ Group), TQ was given at a dose of 5 mg/kg per day for 3 days (i.p.). Group 4: (CIS+TQ Group), one dose of 7 mg/ kg was initiated half an hour before administration of CIS and one dose of 5 mg/kg per day was administered TQ i.p. for 3 days. RESULTS: Malondialdehyde levels were found to be statistically significantly higher in the CIS group compared to the control group. Degenerative changes observed in the CIS+TQ group were found to be milder than in the CIS group. In the CIS+TQ group, a statistically significant decrease in the severity of caspase-3 immunoreactivity was found when compared to the CIS group. It was found that the severity of neurofilament immunoreactivity monitored in neuronal extensions was similar in all groups. In the CIS+TQ group, the severity of tau protein’s immunoreactivity was similar to that of the CIS-group. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results obtained in our study, beneficial effects were obtained in reducing neurotoxicity with shortterm TQ application in rats treated with CIS treatment. Aims:This study determined maternal and paternal attachment levels and the factors affecting attachment during the prenatal period.Methods:This descriptive study included pregnant women aged 18 to 48 years and their spouses admitted to a follow-up clinic. Women with risky pregnancies were excluded. Attachment was assessed using the maternal antenatal attachment scale (MAAS) and the paternal antenatal attachment scale (PAAS). The primary outcomes were the maternal and paternal attachment levels and the factors affecting attachment during the prenatal period.Results:The study population consisted of 100 pregnant women and their spouses, totaling 200 individuals [age, mean±standard deviation: 27.8±5.1 years, prospective mothers; 31.5±5.9 years, prospective fathers]. The mean MAAS score was 77.87±8.08, and the mean PAAS score was 63.7±8.2. There was a statistically significant correlation between the total MAAS and PAAS scores (r=0.279, p=0.005). Also, mean scores of the subdimensions of quality of attachment (r=0.203, p=0.042) and time spent on attachment (r=0.236, p=0.018) of the MAAS and PAAS showed correlations. We observed that 48% of the pregnant women saw their babies with their spouses on ultrasound. Median MAAS score [81 (56 to 93) vs. 77 (45 to 93), p=0.002] and PAAS score [66.5 (54 to 77) vs. 61 (41 to 79), p=0.015] of the expectant mothers and fathers who saw their babies together on the ultrasound were higher than couples who did not see their babies on the ultrasound together.Conclusions:This study showed a significant relationship between maternal and paternal attachment levels of couples in the prenatal period.

Abstract Background To translate and validate the psychometric characteristics of a Turkish version of the Obstetric Quality-of-Recovery score 11 tool used to measure post-cesarean delivery recovery in Turkish-speaking patients. Methods After the original English version of the Obstetric Quality-of-Recovery score 11 tool was translated into Turkish; it was psychometrically validated to assess the post-cesarean delivery quality of recovery. Validity, reliability, and feasibility were investigated. The Obstetric Quality-of-Recovery score 11 tool was administered to Turkish-speaking patients on postoperative day 1. On postoperative day 1, a global health visual analog scale was used to assess the patient's perceived global recovery. Results One hundred and eighty-six patients completed their questionnaires, providing a completion rate of 97.38%. The Spearman rho (ρ) correlation coefficient between the Obstetric Quality-of-Recovery score and global health visual analog scale (0–100 points) was 0.850 at postoperative day 1 following surgery (P

Centipede bites have been reported rarely in humans. The mechanism of centipede toxin is not fully understood. Skin reactions develop more in centipede bites. In this text, we will present a case that developed thrombocytopenia after a centipede bite. An 18-month old female infant was bitten on the back of the right hand and the right side of the forehead. She applied to the emergency department with the complaint of redness and swelling that started in the morning hours after the bite. The vital signs of the patient were stable. The patient had no systemic complaints. The patient's laboratory tests, PLT was 28,000 K/UL were determined. During follow-up of the patient, bleeding symptoms developed associated with thrombocytopenia. The follow-up examination 10 days later, thrombocyte count was determined as 302,000 in the full blood count. Centipede bites are not greatly reported and the actual incidence is undoubtedly higher than assumed. Although the majority spontaneously recover with only simple local reactions that have formed, they can lead to serious complications such as acute myocardial infarcts, acute coronary ischemia, acute renal damage, anaphylaxis, or thrombocytopenia. Therefore, following a centipede bite, patients must be evaluated carefully and attention must be paid in respect of complications.

Abstract Background Current robot-aided training allows for high-intensity training but might hamper the transfer of learned skills to real daily tasks. Many of these tasks, e.g., carrying a cup of coffee, require manipulating objects with complex dynamics. Thus, the absence of somatosensory information regarding the interaction with virtual objects during robot-aided training might be limiting the potential benefits of robotic training on motor (re)learning. We hypothesize that providing somatosensory information through the haptic rendering of virtual environments might enhance motor learning and skill transfer. Furthermore, the inclusion of haptic rendering might increase the task realism, enhancing participants’ agency and motivation. Providing arm weight support during training might also enhance learning by limiting participants’ fatigue. Methods We conducted a study with 40 healthy participants to evaluate how haptic rendering and arm weight support affect motor learning and skill transfer of a dynamic task. The task consisted of inverting a virtual pendulum whose dynamics were haptically rendered on an exoskeleton robot designed for upper limb neurorehabilitation. Participants trained with or without haptic rendering and with or without weight support. Participants’ task performance, movement strategy, effort, motivation, and agency were evaluated during baseline, short- and long-term retention. We also evaluated if the skills acquired during training transferred to a similar task with a shorter pendulum. Results We found that haptic rendering significantly increases participants’ movement variability during training and the ability to synchronize their movements with the pendulum, which is correlated with better performance. Weight support also enhances participants’ movement variability during training and reduces participants’ physical effort. Importantly, we found that training with haptic rendering enhances motor learning and skill transfer, while training with weight support hampers learning compared to training without weight support. We did not observe any significant differences between training modalities regarding agency and motivation during training and retention tests. Conclusion Haptic rendering is a promising tool to boost robot-aided motor learning and skill transfer to tasks with similar dynamics. However, further work is needed to find how to simultaneously provide robotic assistance and haptic rendering without hampering motor learning, especially in brain-injured patients. BackgroundRelapsed/refractory high-risk neuroblastoma has a dismal prognosis. Anti-GD2-mediated chemo-immunotherapy has a notable anti-tumor activity in patients with relapsed/refractory high-risk neuroblastoma. The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficacy and safety of the combination of immunotherapy with dinutuximab beta (DB) and chemotherapy in patients with relapsed/refractory high-risk neuroblastoma.MethodsAll patients received the Turkish Pediatric Oncology Group NB 2009 national protocol for HR-NB treatment at the time of diagnosis. Salvage treatments were administered after progression or relapse. The patients who could not achieve remission in primary or metastatic sites were included in the study. The most common chemotherapy scheme was irinotecan and temozolomide. DB was administered intravenously for 10 days through continuous infusion with 10 mg/m2 per day. The patients received 2 to 14 successive cycles with duration of 28 days each. Disease assessment was performed after cycles 2, 4, and 6 and every 2 to 3 cycles thereafter.ResultsBetween January 2020 and March 2022, nineteen patients received a total of 125 cycles of DB and chemotherapy. Objective responses were achieved in 12/19 (63%) patients, including complete remission in 6/19 and partial response in 6/19. Stable disease was observed in two patients. The remaining five patients developed bone/bone marrow and soft tissue progression after 2-4 cycles of treatment. The most common Grade ≥3 toxicities were leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypertransaminasemia, fever, rash/itching and capillary leak syndrome, respectively.ConclusionOur study results suggest that DB-based chemo-immunotherapy seems to be suitable with encouraging response rates in patients with relapsed/refractory high-risk neuroblastoma.

The interest rates significantly affect maritime markets, both with their role in determining the cost of ship investments and their role in determining the demand for goods in the world economy. We examined the impact on the freight market, which is the fundamental of other maritime markets and is much more dynamic than them. Considering that change in interest rates affects the world economy, but this effect may not survive throughout the period, we applied the analysis first with a linear approach and then with a time-varying approach. The federal funds rate is used as an indicator of global interest rates, and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is used as an indicator of the dry bulk freight market. As a result of analysis performed using a data set consisting of 302 monthly observations covering the period between 1995 and 2020, it was determined that the significant relationship does not exist throughout the whole sample, it exists only at certain periods, and the significant effect occurs when BDI tends to increase and decrease. Thus, it was determined that changes in interest rates not only affect the global economy but also the trend of the dry bulk freight market.

Abstract Objective Primary dysmenorrhea occurs due to abnormal levels of prostanoids, uterine contractions, and uterine blood flow. However, the reasons for pain in primary dysmenorrhea have not yet been clarified. We examined the blood flow alterations in patients with primary dysmenorrhea and determined the relationship between ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels, as an ischemia indicator, and primary dysmenorrhea. Methods In the present study, 37 patients who had primary dysmenorrhea and were in their luteal and menstrual phase of their menstrual cycles were included. Thirty individuals who had similar demographic characteristics, who were between 18 and 30 years old and did not have gynecologic disease were included as control individuals. Their uterine artery Doppler indices and serum IMA levels were measured. Results Menstrual phase plasma IMA levels were significantly higher than luteal phase IMA levels, both in the patient and in the control groups (p < 0.001). Although the menstrual phase IMA levels of patients were significantly higher than those of controls, luteal phase IMA levels were not significantly different between the two groups. Menstrual uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) of primary dysmenorrhea patients were significantly different when compared with luteal uterine artery PI and RI levels. There was a positive correlation between menstrual phase IMA and uterine artery PI and RI in the primary dysmenorrhea. Conclusion Ischemia plays an important role in the etiology of the pain, which is frequently observed in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. Ischemia-modified albumin levels are considered as an efficient marker to determine the severity of pain and to indicate ischemia in primary dysmenorrhea.

Abstract Background Arm weight compensation with rehabilitation robots for stroke patients has been successfully used to increase the active range of motion and reduce the effects of pathological muscle synergies. However, the differences in structure, performance, and control algorithms among the existing robotic platforms make it hard to effectively assess and compare human arm weight relief. In this paper, we introduce criteria for ideal arm weight compensation, and furthermore, we propose and analyze three distinct arm weight compensation methods (Average, Full, Equilibrium) in the arm rehabilitation exoskeleton ’ARMin’. The effect of the best performing method was validated in chronic stroke subjects to increase the active range of motion in three dimensional space. Methods All three methods are based on arm models that are generalizable for use in different robotic devices and allow individualized adaptation to the subject by model parameters. The first method Average uses anthropometric tables to determine subject-specific parameters. The parameters for the second method Full are estimated based on force sensor data in predefined resting poses. The third method Equilibrium estimates parameters by optimizing an equilibrium of force/torque equations in a predefined resting pose. The parameters for all three methods were first determined and optimized for temporal and spatial estimation sensitivity. Then, the three methods were compared in a randomized single-center study with respect to the remaining electromyography (EMG) activity of 31 healthy participants who performed five arm poses covering the full range of motion with the exoskeleton robot. The best method was chosen for feasibility tests with three stroke patients. In detail, the influence of arm weight compensation on the three dimensional workspace was assessed by measuring of the horizontal workspace at three different height levels in stroke patients. Results All three arm weight compensation methods reduced the mean EMG activity of healthy subjects to at least 49% compared with the no compensation reference. The Equilibrium method outperformed the Average and the Full methods with a highly significant reduction in mean EMG activity by 19% and 28% respectively. However, upon direct comparison, each method has its own individual advantages such as in set-up time, cost, or required technology. The horizontal workspace assessment in poststroke patients with the Equilibrium method revealed potential workspace size-dependence of arm height, while weight compensation helped maximize the workspace as much as possible. Conclusion Different arm weight compensation methods were developed according to initially defined criteria. The methods were then analyzed with respect to their sensitivity and required technology. In general, weight compensation performance improved with the level of technology, but increased cost and calibration efforts. This study reports a systematic way to analyze the efficacy of different weight compensation methods using EMG. Additionally, the feasibility of the best method, Equilibrium, was shown by testing with three stroke patients. In this test, a height dependence of the workspace size also seemed to be present, which further highlights the importance of patient-specific weight compensation, particularly for training at different arm heights. To offer engaging neurorehabilitation training to neurologic patients, motor tasks are often visualized in virtual reality (VR). Recently introduced head-mounted displays (HMDs) allow to realistically mimic the body of the user from a first-person perspective (i.e., avatar) in a highly immersive VR environment. In this immersive environment, users may embody avatars with different body characteristics. Importantly, body characteristics impact how people perform actions. Therefore, alternating body perceptions using immersive VR may be a powerful tool to promote motor activity in neurologic patients. However, the ability of the brain to adapt motor commands based on a perceived modified reality has not yet been fully explored. To fill this gap, we “tricked the brain” using immersive VR and investigated if multisensory feedback modulating the physical properties of an embodied avatar influences motor brain networks and control. Ten healthy participants were immersed in a virtual environment using an HMD, where they saw an avatar from first-person perspective. We slowly transformed the surface of the avatar (i.e., the “skin material”) from human to stone. We enforced this visual change by repetitively touching the real arm of the participant and the arm of the avatar with a (virtual) hammer, while progressively replacing the sound of the hammer against skin with stone hitting sound via loudspeaker. We applied single-pulse transcranial magnetic simulation (TMS) to evaluate changes in motor cortical excitability associated with the illusion. Further, to investigate if the “stone illusion” affected motor control, participants performed a reaching task with the human and stone avatar. Questionnaires assessed the subjectively reported strength of embodiment and illusion. Our results show that participants experienced the “stone arm illusion.” Particularly, they rated their arm as heavier, colder, stiffer, and more insensitive when immersed with the stone than human avatar, without the illusion affecting their experienced feeling of body ownership. Further, the reported illusion strength was associated with enhanced motor cortical excitability and faster movement initiations, indicating that participants may have physically mirrored and compensated for the embodied body characteristics of the stone avatar. Together, immersive VR has the potential to influence motor brain networks by subtly modifying the perception of reality, opening new perspectives for the motor recovery of patients.

Abstract Transmediastinal gunshot wounds (TGWs) may lead to life-threatening injuries of vital organs such as large vessels, the esophagus, and lungs. Although they are not commonly encountered in pregnant women, additional caution should be given to these patients. Physical examination for the diagnosis and the choice of treatment modality contain controversial points in hemodynamically stable patients, and resuscitation has excessive importance due to physiological changes in pregnancy. We present a hemodynamically stable 26-week pregnant woman brought to the emergency department for TGW. She had a 1-cm diameter of bullet entrance hole on the right anterior 4th intercostal space, 2 cm lateral to the sternum, and a 3-cm diameter exit hole on the right posterior 12th intercostal space on the midscapular line.With our conservative approach, she had an uncomplicated pregnancy period, and gave birth to a healthy baby at term.

In immersive virtual reality, the own body is often visually represented by an avatar. This may induce a feeling of body ownership over the virtual limbs. Importantly, body ownership and the motor system share neural correlates. Yet, evidence on the functionality of this neuroanatomical coupling is still inconclusive. Findings from previous studies may be confounded by the congruent vs. incongruent multisensory stimulation used to modulate body ownership. This study aimed to investigate the effect of body ownership and congruency of information on motor performance in immersive virtual reality. We aimed to modulate body ownership by providing congruent vs. incongruent visuo-tactile stimulation (i.e., participants felt a brush stroking their real fingers while seeing a virtual brush stroking the same vs. different virtual fingers). To control for congruency effects, unimodal stimulation conditions (i.e., only visual or tactile) with hypothesized low body ownership were included. Fifty healthy participants performed a decision-making (pressing a button as fast as possible) and a motor task (following a defined path). Body ownership was assessed subjectively with established questionnaires and objectively with galvanic skin response (GSR) when exposed to a virtual threat. Our results suggest that congruency of information may decrease reaction times and completion time of motor tasks in immersive virtual reality. Moreover, subjective body ownership is associated with faster reaction times, whereas its benefit on motor task performance needs further investigation. Therefore, it might be beneficial to provide congruent information in immersive virtual environments, especially during the training of motor tasks, e.g., in neurorehabilitation interventions.

Abstract Background The association between the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has not been investigated in Turkish pregnant women. We aimed to investigate associations between VDR gene BsmI (rs15444410), ApaI (rs7975232), FokI (rs19735810), and TaqI (rs731236) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and GDM. Material-methods This case-control study comprised 100 women with GDM and 135 pregnant women without GDM. The VDR polymorphism was evaluated using Sanger-based DNA sequencing. Result VDR gene ApaI, BsmI, and TaqI SNPs did not differ between women with and without GDM (each, p > 0.05). ApaI, BsmI, and TaqI were not associated with GDM risk. The VDR gene FokI CT/TT genotype was associated with an increased GDM risk (CT vs. CC, OR = 1.84, 95% CI: [1.05–3.23], p = 0.031; TT vs. CC, OR = 3.95, 95% CI: [1.56–9.96], p = 0.002; CT/TT vs. CC, OR = 2.29, 95% CI: [1.35–3.89], p = 0.002; and CT/CC vs. TT, OR = 3.02, 95% CI: [1.23–7.38], p = 0.012). The FokI-TT genotype was more associated with younger age and higher glucose, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR than the CC and CT genotype. FokI-T was positively correlated with log-HOMA-IR (r = 0.326, p = 0.004). FokI SNPs were independently associated with GDM after adjusting for BMI and age (β = 1.63, 95% CI: [1. 2-4.2], p = 0.012). There were no associations between the FokI, ApaI, BsmI and TaqI haplotypes and GDM. Conclusion VDR gene FokI SNPs were independently associated with having GDM in Turkish women. VDR gene FokI SNPs might contribute to insulin resistance of developing GDM.

Despite recent advances in robot-assisted training, the benefits of haptic guidance on motor (re)learning are still limited. While haptic guidance may increase task performance during training, it may also decrease participants' effort and interfere with the perception of the environment dynamics, hindering somatosensory information crucial for motor learning. Importantly, haptic guidance limits motor variability, a factor considered essential for learning. We propose that Model Predictive Controllers (MPC) might be good alternatives to haptic guidance since they minimize the assisting forces and promote motor variability during training. We conducted a study with 40 healthy participants to investigate the effectiveness of MPCs on learning a dynamic task. The task consisted of swinging a virtual pendulum to hit incoming targets with the pendulum ball. The environment was haptically rendered using a Delta robot. We designed two MPCs: the first MPC—end-effector MPC—applied the optimal assisting forces on the end-effector. A second MPC—ball MPC—applied its forces on the virtual pendulum ball to further reduce the assisting forces. The participants' performance during training and learning at short- and long-term retention tests were compared to a control group who trained without assistance, and a group that trained with conventional haptic guidance. We hypothesized that the end-effector MPC would promote motor variability and minimize the assisting forces during training, and thus, promote learning. Moreover, we hypothesized that the ball MPC would enhance the performance and motivation during training but limit the motor variability and sense of agency (i.e., the feeling of having control over their movements), and therefore, limit learning. We found that the MPCs reduce the assisting forces compared to haptic guidance. Training with the end-effector MPC increases the movement variability and does not hinder the pendulum swing variability during training, ultimately enhancing the learning of the task dynamics compared to the other groups. Finally, we observed that increases in the sense of agency seemed to be associated with learning when training with the end-effector MPC. In conclusion, training with MPCs enhances motor learning of tasks with complex dynamics and are promising strategies to improve robotic training outcomes in neurological patients.

Abstract Recently discovered exotic magnetic configurations, namely magnetic solitons appearing in the presence of bulk or interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (i-DMI), have excited scientists to explore their potential applications in emerging spintronic technologies such as race-track magnetic memory, spin logic, radio frequency nano-oscillators and sensors. Such studies are motivated by their foreseeable advantages over conventional micro-magnetic structures due to their small size, topological stability and easy spin-torque driven manipulation with much lower threshold current densities giving way to improved storage capacity, and faster operation with efficient use of energy. In this work, we show that in the presence of i-DMI in Pt/CoFeB/Ti multilayers by tuning the magnetic anisotropy (both in-plane and perpendicular-to-plane) via interface engineering and postproduction treatments, we can stabilize a variety of magnetic configurations such as Néel skyrmions, horseshoes and most importantly, the recently predicted isolated radial vortices at room temperature and under zero bias field. Especially, the radial vortex state with its absolute convergence to or divergence from a single point can potentially offer exciting new applications such as particle trapping/detrapping in addition to magnetoresistive memories with efficient switching, where the radial vortex state can act as a source of spin-polarized current with radial polarization.

The recent studies indicate that the protein secondary structure provides very important advantages in determining the function of a protein, treating numerous diseases and drug design. Determining the secondary structure in the laboratory environment is both costly and challenging. Therefore, the prediction of protein secondary structure has been an important study field of bioinformatics and computational biology for many years. The aim of this paper was to provide a contribution to the prediction of protein secondary structure using the nature-inspired methods. The data in the first phase were trained with clonal selection algorithm (CSA) which was modeled by being inspired by the live immune system. The classification was then performed with multilayer perceptron which is one of the deep learning methods modeled by being inspired by the biological nervous system. The results obtained indicated that training of the data with CSA prior to classification contributed positively to classification success.

Background: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is the most serious and potentially life-threatening iatrogenic complication associated with ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive technology protocols. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of dopamine agonist as a preventive strategy of OHSS in women at high risk in in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) treatment cycles. Methods: Seventy women at risk to develop OHSS undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment cycle were included. The study group received 0.5 mg of cabergoline for 8 days from the day of human chorionic gonadotropin administration in comparison to those who undergo no treatment for the prevention of OHSS. The reduction of the incidence of OHSS was the primary outcome. Results: The actual incidence of OHSS was 8.33% in the cabergoline group and 20.58% in the control group. Thus, the incidence of OHSS was significantly reduced, by almost 60%, in the cabergoline group in comparison with the control group (relative ratios: 0.4, 95% confidence interval: 0.18–0.79). Conclusion: Prophylactic treatment with the dopamine agonist, cabergoline, reduces the incidence of OHSS in women at high risk undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment. However, the effects of cabergoline on important outcomes, namely, live birth, miscarriage, and congenital abnormalities are still uncertain.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and is projected to be second by 2025. It has the worst survival rate among all major cancers. Two pressing needs for extending life expectancy of affected individuals are the development of new approaches to identify improved therapeutics, addressed herein, and the identification of early markers. PDA advances through a complex series of intercellular and physiological interactions that drive cancer progression in response to organ stress, organ failure, malnutrition, and infiltrating immune and stromal cells. Candidate drugs identified in organ culture or cell-based screens must be validated in preclinical models such as KIC (p48Cre;LSL-KrasG12D;Cdkn2af/f) mice, a genetically engineered model of PDA in which large aggressive tumors develop by 4 weeks of age. We report a rapid, systematic and robust in vivo screen for effective drug combinations to treat Kras-dependent PDA. Kras mutations occur early in tumor progression in over 90% of human PDA cases. Protein kinase and G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling activates Kras. Regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins are coincidence detectors that can be induced by multiple inputs to feedback-regulate GPCR signaling. We crossed Rgs16::GFP bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) transgenic mice with KIC mice and show that the Rgs16::GFP transgene is a KrasG12D-dependent marker of all stages of PDA, and increases proportionally to tumor burden in KIC mice. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis of cultured primary PDA cells reveals characteristics of embryonic progenitors of pancreatic ducts and endocrine cells, and extraordinarily high expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase Axl, an emerging cancer drug target. In proof-of-principle drug screens, we find that weanling KIC mice with PDA treated for 2 weeks with gemcitabine (with or without Abraxane) plus inhibitors of Axl signaling (warfarin and BGB324) have fewer tumor initiation sites and reduced tumor size compared with the standard-of-care treatment. Rgs16::GFP is therefore an in vivo reporter of PDA progression and sensitivity to new chemotherapeutic drug regimens such as Axl-targeted agents. This screening strategy can potentially be applied to identify improved therapeutics for other cancers.

Meckel-Gruber Syndrome (MGS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by typical ultrasonographical (USG) findings including encephalocele, polydactyly and cystic dysplastic kidneys. In this article we report an antenatally detected MGS with a review of the literature. A 28 year-old multigravida (G7P3L3) presented with 14 weeks of gestation for routine antenatal examination. The mother had had a second degree intermarriage, and two previous pregnancies were learned to be terminated due to MGS. The USG showed occipital encephalocele, polydactyly, oligohydramnios and bilateral renal cystic dysplasia. After detecting the fetal karyotype as 46,XY, termination of pregnancy was performed. In the histopathological examination, encephalocele, polydactyly and bilateral dysplastic kidneys were observed and diagnosis of MGS was confirmed. In cases with MGS, parents should be informed about the fetal prognosis and the recurrence risk for the next pregnancies. [Med-Science 2015; 4(2.000): 2236-43]

The Copper T intrauterine device (IUDs) are a commonly used method of contraception for women, but have been associated with serious complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or omentum. Although perforation of the uterus by an IUD is not uncommon, migration to the sigmoid colon is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of 37-year-old female with an IUD migrating through the uterus into the peritoneal cavity and subsequently invading into the sigmoid colon. Wide range lesions may occur in the vulvar region. The aim of the present study is to have an insight into the diverse morphologic spectrum of vulvar lesions. Total of 263 patients with primary vulvar complaints seen in Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Outpatient Clinic were recruited into study. The present retrospective study was carried out by compiling the data from archival records from January 2010 to May 2014. The vulvar biopsies specimens were studied for histomorphological features. The lesions were categorized as non-neoplastic, neoplastic and inconclusive; neoplastic ones were further divided into benign, malignant and premalignant.The age of the women ranged from 11 to 85 years (mean 46.27±14.32) with the maximum number of patients between 41 to 50 years of age. Most common clinical presentation was itching (126 cases; 47.9%). The commonest site of vulvar lesions was labia majora (145 cases, 55.1%). Non neoplastic lesions were more common (n = 172; 65.4%) than the neoplastic lesions (n =91; 34.6%). There were 81 (30.8%) benign lesions while 10 cases (3,8%) were malignant or premalignant ones. Amongst the non-neoplastic lesions, the most common histopathologic diagnosis was of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (46 cases; 17,5%). Early recognition of vulvar lesions and a prompt biopsy diagnosis for all lesions with suspicious changes is of great significance. [Med-Science 2015; 4(1.000): 1876-84]

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in differentiating endometrial cancer from benign endometrial lesions in postmenopausal patients with vaginal bleeding and endometrial thickening and to predict the depth of myometrial invasion in endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods: Postmenopausal patients with vaginal bleeding and endometrial thickening were enrolled in this prospective study. T2-weighted, pre- and postcontrast T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted images were obtained. The ADC values of all the patients with endometrial pathologies were recorded. The staging accuracies of DWI and postcontrast T1-weighted images in the assessment of myometrial invasion were evaluated in histopathologically proven endometrial cancer patients. Results: Fifty-two patients (mean age: 57 ± 10, range: 41–79) were enrolled in the study. Thirty-eight of the lesions were benign (27 as hyperplasia and endometritis; 11 as polyps). Fourteen of the 52 endometrial lesions were pathologically proven as cancers and underwent hysterectomy, and all the specimens were reported as endometrioid adenocarcinomas. The mean ADC value (10–3 mm2/second) of cancer (0.88 ± 0.10) was significantly lower than that of benign lesions (1.78 ± 0.27, p = 0,001). There was no significant difference between ADC values of endometrial tissue in patients with FIGO stage 1A (0.87 ± 0.11, n = 9) and FIGO stage 1B (0.91 ± 0.07, n = 5). The staging accuracy was 92.9 per cent (13/14) for DWI and 85.7 per cent (12/14) for postcontrast T1-weighted images. Conclusion: ADC values allow benign endometrial lesions to be differentiated from endometrial cancer in postmenopausal patients but do not correlate with the depth of myometrial invasion and histological tumor grading.

Somatostatin (SST) is a neuropeptide present in neurons, endocrine cells, and a wide range of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). 68Ga-DOTATOC, 68Ga-DOTANOC, and 68Ga-DOTATATE are current SST analogues used for PET/CT which bind to SST receptors expressed in NETs. These SST analogues have been used successfully for diagnosis of SST-expressing tumors with a more sensitive detection technique than conventional scintigraphy. However, there is a lack of clinical data on the differentiation between NETs and other malignant tumors or benign pathological conditions. Here, we report a case of Paget’s disease mimicking bone metastasis of NET on PET/CT due to increased 68Ga-DOTANOC uptake and review examples of similar cases in the literature.

We present a patient with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) diagnosed with a serous papillary cystadenofibroma. A 41-year-old married female with a mass in the left inguinal region and a history of primary amenorrhea. A bulging mass of 13.7 cm × 8 cm × 12.4 cm in the left inguinal region extending from the hip joint to the level of labia majus, and a 3.2 cm × 2.8 cm mass in her right inguinal region were found by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. We performed bilateral gonadectomy. The pathology showed testicular tissue in the right inguinal mass and a serous papillary cystadenofibroma in the left one. CAIS is an infrequent clinical entity, occurrence of serous papillary cystadenofibroma is even rarer in this syndrome serous cystadenofibroma should come to mind in patients with a huge inguinal mass. Gonadectomy should be performed right after puberty to prevent the risk of malignancy development in the testes.

Introduction: Endometrial hyperplasia has been associated with the presence of concomitant endometrial carcinoma. In this study, patients who were diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia and had hysterectomy, determination of the incidence of endometrial cancer accompanying postoperatively and clinical parameters associated with cancer are aimed. Materials and Methods: Endometrial biopsies were taken from patients for various reasons and among them 158 patients diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia from pathologic examination results were retrospectively evaluated. All of the patient’s age, parity, weight, transvaginal ultrasound measured by endometrial thickness, concomitant systemic disease (diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism), tamoxifen use, hormone use and whether in reproductive age or menopause were all questioned. Patients who applied with endometrial cancer, their cervical stromal involvement, lymph node involvement, cytology positivity and omental metastases were examined. Patients were classified according to their stage and grade. Patients who had intraoperative frozen were re-evaluated. Results: Fifteen cases with preoperative endometrial hyperplasia diagnosed with endometrial cancer postoperatively, 2 cases had complex hyperplasia without atypia and 13 cases had complex atypical hyperplasia. The rate of preoperative hyperplasia with postoperative endometrial cancer was found to be 10.8% where by 15 cases of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer postoperatively 11 cases were in postmenopausal period. In patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer according to their histologic types 14 cases had endometrioid adenocarcinoma while one patient with preoperative complex hyperplasia without atypia was diagnosed with serous papillary carcinoma postoperatively. Evaluation of stages in patients diagnosed with cancer, 7 cases of patients had stage IA, 7 cases of patients had stage IB, and 7 cases cases of patients with serous papillary carcinoma were evaluated as stage 3C. Conclusion: The risk of endometrial cancer in patients diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia especially endometrial hyperplasia ranges between 15% to 45% and among them 7.9%–51% are found to have myometrial inversion. Therefore, preoperative ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging should be perfomed in patients diagnosed with complex atypical hyperplasia. Even intraoperative frozen section examination can provide useful information in selected cases.

Background. Mature cystic teratomas of the fallopian tube are extremely rare and only 54 cases have been reported in the literature. In this paper, we report a mature cystic teratoma of the fallopian tube in a postmenopausal woman and we report the review of literature of tubal cystic teratomas. Case. A 62-year-old, gravida 4 postmenopausal woman presented with pain in the right lower abdominal region for a long time. An 88 × 72 × 95 mm heterogeneous mass which contained calcifications and lipoid components was detected in the right adnexal region by transvaginal ultrasonogram (TV-USG). Serum tumour markers, namely, CA125, CA15-3, and CA19-9, were within normal range. A laparotomy revealed a 9 × 10 cm cystic mass within the fimbrial region in the right fallopian tube, and right salpingoopherectomy was performed consequently. Microscopic examination revealed squamous epithelium with sebaceous glands and hair follicles, and pseudostratified ciliated respiratory epithelium with cartilage and mucous glands. Because the frozen section resulted in a benign dermoid cyst, no further operative procedure was performed. The postoperative follow-up was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the second postoperative day. Conclusion. In cases of undetermined pelvic or abdominal masses, a teratoma of the fallopian tube should be considered.

In this study, psychological tests such as Visual Analogue Pain Scale, Verbal Pain Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Hamilton Anxiety Scale were applied to the selected healthy subjects and patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) in Suleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the scores were recorded. A measurement system was established in the same department of the university to measure the sympathetic skin response (SSR) from the subjects. The SSR was measured and recorded. The parameters such as latency time, maximum amplitude and the elapsed time were calculated by using Matlab software from the recorded SSR data. SSR parameters were added to the scores and diagnosis accuracy percentages of the FMS calculated by using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Obtained results from the simulations showed that the specified parameters of the SSR and FMS were concerned and these parameters can be used as a diagnostic method in FMS.

In this study, values that were obtained from the blood samples results of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients and healthy subjects in the laboratory conditions and the measurements of the sympathetic skin response (SSR) were recorded in Suleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Medicine. Calculated SSR parameters by using Matlab software and the laboratory tests were analyzed separately by artificial neural networks (ANN) and the percentage of accuracy in the diagnosis of FMS was extracted. Later, these two data groups were analyzed together by ANN and the effect of SSR parameters was investigated in the diagnosis of FMS.

Abstract Introduction Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis (APD) is a rare autoimmune dermatosis characterized by recurrent cutaneous and mucosal lesions during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle that disappear some days after the menses. Case Report A 34-year-old primipara woman with no significant past medical history and no prior exogenous hormone use, who presented with cyclic skin eruptions starting 1 year after the delivery. The lesions occurred 6 days before the menses and disappeared in between 1 and 2 days after the menstruation ceased. The patient was diagnosed after a positive response to an intradermal test with progesterone and was successfully treated with combined oral contraceptives. The skin eruptions have not returned since the initiation of this therapy. Conclusion Dermatologists, gynecologists, and obstetricians should be aware of this rare entity. Furthermore, if this condition is suspected, a thorough history taking on the menstrual cycle and results of the intradermal progesterone test are mandatory.

Purpose: Studies reporting patient-centered outcomes, including quality of life and satisfaction, in perforated peptic ulcer (PPU) treatment are insufficient. This study was designed to assess the relative efficacy of laparoscopic repair (LR) as opposed to open surgical repair (OR) in the treatment of and its impact on quality of life., Methods: This investigation performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent treatment for PPU at a secondary care hospital between January 2017 and April 2020. Patients were categorized into 2 separate groups according to the type of surgical procedure received: LR and OR. Comparisons were made based on a variety of factors, such as demographic data, intra- and postoperative metrics, pain control, patient contentment, and quality of life indicators., Results: In the analysis, there were no statistically significant differences in demographic or clinical characteristics between the LR (n = 35) and OR (n = 62) groups (P > .05). Conversely, the rates of incisional hernia and surgical site infection were significantly greater in the OR group (P < .05). Moreover, the LR exhibited benefits such as a shorter length of hospital stay (P < .05), more rapid resumption of a normal diet, and fewer surgical site infections-factors that contributed to a lower rate of overall postoperative complications. According to the quality-of-life questionnaire, the LR group exhibited significantly greater scores for physical function, role, pain, and general health by the 30th postoperative day (P = .003, P < .001, P = .006, and P = .001, respectively), and by the 1-year follow-up, the LR group showed substantial improvements in physical function, physical role, emotional role, pain and general health (P = .047, P = .004, P = .039, P = .001, and P = .021, respectively), indicating its effectiveness in patient recovery and quality of life enhancement after surgery., Conclusion: This study showed that LR could provide certain benefits in managing PPUs, such as reduced lengths of hospital stay and lower incidences of surgical site infections. Background: Despite the available treatments, pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) prognosis is poor., Objectives: We aimed to investigate the effects of the alamandine (ALA), melatonin (MEL), and ALA + MEL in PAH., Methods: The rats were randomly divided into Control (n = 10), monocrotaline (MCT) (n = 12), ALA (n = 12), MEL (n = 12), and ALA + MEL (n = 12) groups. PAH was induced by MCT. The ALA, MEL, and ALA + MEL groups received 50 μg/kg/day ALA, 10 mg/kg/day MEL, and ALA + MEL, respectively, for 35 days. Echocardiographic and hemodynamic measurements and tissue analyses (morphometric, histopathological, ELISA, and western blot) were performed., Results: Monotherapies, especially MEL, reduced the right ventricular (RV) systolic pressure. Only MEL increased the pulmonary artery acceleration time. MCT increased the RV/left ventricle (LV) + interventricular septum (IVS) ratio. While ALA and ALA + MEL slightly decreased the RV/(LV + IVS), MEL significantly restored it. MCT increased the tunica intima-media (TIM) thickness, PCNA and α-SMA of pulmonary arterioles, histopathological score (HS) (inflammatory infiltration etc.) of the lung, and RV. All treatments reduced the TIM thickness (especially MEL), PCNA, and α-SMA. All treatments significantly decreased the HS of the lung; however, MEL and ALA + MEL produced greater benefits. All treatments attenuated the HS of RV. MCT caused a significant increase in lung lysyl oxidase (LOX) activity. All treatments restored the LOX; however, MEL and ALA + MEL provided greater improvement. While lung Nrf-2 was increased in MCT-treated rats, MEL reduced it., Conclusion: ALA, MEL, and ALA + MEL attenuate PAH and protect RV via antiproliferative, anti-remodeling, antihypertrophic, anti-inflammatory, and free radical scavenging (only MEL) capabilities. Testicular torsion is an urological emergency and can lead to ischemia damage and testicular loss if not diagnosed in time. Proanthocyanidin is reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The current study aimed to examine the possible effects of proanthocyanidin (P) on the testis in torsion/detorsion (T/D)-induced testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Forty rats were divided into four groups (n=10 for each): sham-operated (sham), I/R, I/R + P100 (100 mg/kg, 30 min before torsion), and I/R + P200 (200 mg/kg, 30 min before torsion). Testicular T/D was performed on the left testicle by 3 hours of torsion at 720° clockwise, followed by 3 hours of detorsion. In the I/R group, an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and a decrease in glutathione (GSH), vitamin C (Vit C), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) values were determined compared to the sham group (p<0.001). Moreover, an increase in the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax), a decrease in the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were detected in the I/R group (p<0.001). Histopathologically, it was determined that the Johnsen and Cosentino scores of the testicles were irregular in the I/R group (p<0.001). Proanthocyanidin treatment caused a decrease in MDA, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax levels and an increase in GSH, Vit C, GPx, G6PD, Bcl-2 and PCNA values. Additionally, Johnsen and Cosentino rearranged the scores. Tumor deposits (TDs) are defined as discontinuous neoplastic masses within the lymphatic drainage pathway of the primary tumor. The poor prognostic implication of these masses have been demonstrated in various cancers. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of TDs in our thyroid carcinoma cases, which has not been studied so far to the best of our knowledge, and to determine the prognostic value of their existence. In this retrospective cohort study, 194 thyroid carcinoma cases with cervical lymph node sampling and/or dissection were reevaluated for TDs. The case series consisted of 176 thyroid papillary carcinoma (TPC) and 18 thyroid medullary carcinoma (TMC) patients. TDs were detected in 54 (27.8%) patients. TMC cases (55.6%) had significantly more TDs compared to TPCs (25.0%; P = .006). TDs were more common in women (P = .045), and in multifocal tumors (P = .017). In addition, cases with TDs had larger tumor size (P = .002), more lymphatic invasion (P = .009), extrathyroidal extension (P < .001), and distant metastasis (P < .001). The mean follow-up period of the patients was 120.1 months (range, 4-341 months). Locoregional recurrence detected in 17 patients (8.8%) was more common in TMC (33.3%) than TPC cases (6.3%; P = .002). Distant metastasis was identified in 27 patients (13.9%). Ten-year recurrence free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) for all patients were 89.0% and 92.4%, respectively. Mean estimated OS time for TD negative and TD positive cases were: 281.9 (±17.2), 325.6 (±6.2) and 217.6 (±27.4) months, respectively (P = .002). Sex (P = .001), tumor type (P = .002), pT classification of the tumor (P < .001), perineural invasion (P = .002) and TDs (P = .002) were significantly associated with OS. In TPC cases individually, extrathyroidal extension (P = .001) and TDs (P = .002) were significantly correlated with distant metastasis. In multivariate analysis, only tumor size was detected as an independent prognostic marker in TPC cases (P = .005). Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, is nowadays widely used in the treatment of gram-negative microorganisms. The antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities of eucalyptol, a type of saturated monoterpene, have been reported in many studies. The aim of this study was to examine the possible effects of eucalyptol on gentamicin-induced renal toxicity. A total of 32 rats were divided into 4 groups; Control (C), Eucalyptol (EUC), Gentamicin (GEN), and Gentamicin + Eucalyptol (GEN + EUC). In order to induce renal toxicity, 100 mg/kg gentamicin was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 10 consecutive days in the GEN and GEN + EUC groups. EUC and GEN + EUC groups were given 100 mg/kg orally of eucalyptol for 10 consecutive days. Afterwards, rats were euthanized and samples were taken and subjected to histopathological, biochemical, immunohistochemical, and real-time PCR examinations. The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) levels were significantly decreased in the GEN + EUC group (0.76 and 0.69-fold, respectively) compared to the GEN group. The glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) activities were significantly increased in the GEN + EUC group (1.35 and 2.67-fold, respectively) compared to the GEN group. In GEN group, Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β), Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Caspase-3, 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) expression levels were found to be quite irregular. GEN + EUC group decreased the expressions of NF-kB, IL-1β, iNOS, TNF-α, Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG (0.55, 0.67, 0.54, 0.54, 0.63 and 0.67-fold, respectively), while it caused increased expression of Nrf2 (3.1 fold). In addition, eucalyptol treatment ameliorated the histopathological changes that occurred with gentamicin. The results of our study show that eucalyptol has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiapoptotic, nephroprotective, and curative effects on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of royal jelly (RJ) and its major fatty acid 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) on ischemic stroke-related pathologies using histological and molecular approaches., Methods: Male rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) to induce ischemic stroke and were supplemented daily with either vehicle (control group), RJ or 10-HDA for 7 days starting on the day of surgery. On the eighth day, rats were sacrificed and brain tissue and blood samples were obtained to analyze brain infarct volume, DNA damage as well as apoptotic, inflammatory and epigenetic parameters., Results: Both RJ and 10-HDA supplementation significantly reduced brain infarction and decreased weight loss when compared to control animals. These effects were associated with reduced levels of active caspase-3 and PARP-1 and increased levels of acetyl-histone H3 and H4. Although both RJ and 10-HDA treatments significantly increased acetyl-histone H3 levels, the effect of RJ was more potent than that of 10-HDA. RJ and 10-HDA supplementation also alleviated DNA damage by significantly reducing tail length, tail intensity and tail moment in brain tissue and peripheral lymphocytes, except for the RJ treatment which tended to reduce tail moment in lymphocytes without statistical significance., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that neuroprotective effects of RJ in experimental stroke can mostly be attributed to 10-HDA.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of syringic acid, an anti-oxidant, on indomethacin induced gastric ulcers in rats. Experimental groups were control, ulcer, ulcer treated with 20 mg/kg esomeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor that reduces acid secretion), and ulcer treated with 100 mg/kg syringic acid. Rats were pretreated with esomeprazole or syringic acid two weeks before ulcer induction. Our histopathological observations showed that either syringic acid or esomeprazole attenuated the severity of gastric mucosal damage. Moreover, syringic acid and esomeprazole pretreatments alleviated indomethacin-induced damage by regulating oxidative stress, inflammatory response, the level of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), expressions of COX and prostaglandin E 2 , cell proliferation, apoptosis and regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. We conclude that either esomeprazole or syringic acid administration protected the gastric mucosa from harmful effects of indomethacin. Syringic acid might, therefore be a potential therapeutic agent for preventing and treating indomethacin-induced gastric damage.
