Moving toward a future of efficient, accessible, and less carbon-reliant energy devices has been at the forefront of energy research innovations for the past 30 years. Metal-halide perovskite (MHP) thin films have gained significant attention due to their flexibility of device applications and tunable capabilities for improving power conversion efficiency. Serving as a gateway to optimize device performance, consideration must be given to chemical synthesis processing techniques. Therefore, how does common substrate processing techniques influence the behavior of MHP phenomena such as ion migration and strain? Here, we demonstrate how a hybrid approach of chemical bath deposition (CBD) and nanoparticle SnO 2 substrate processing significantly improves the performance of (FAPbI 3 ) 0.97 (MAPbBr 3 ) 0.03 by reducing micro-strain in the SnO 2 lattice, allowing distribution of K + from K-Cl treatment of substrates to passivate defects formed at the interface and produce higher current in light and dark environments. X-ray diffraction reveals differences in lattice strain behavior with respect to SnO 2 substrate processing methods. Through use of conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM), conductivity is measured spatially with MHP morphology, showing higher generation of current in both light and dark conditions for films with hybrid processing. Additionally, time-of-flight secondary ionization mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) observed the distribution of K + at the perovskite/SnO 2 interface, indicating K + passivation of defects to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and device stability. We show how understanding the role of ion distribution at the SnO 2 and perovskite interface can help reduce the creating of defects and promote a more efficient MHP device.

Purpose: Deep learning (DL) models have received much attention lately for their ability to achieve expert-level performance on the accurate automated analysis of chest X-rays (CXRs). Recently available public CXR datasets include high resolution images, but state-of-the-art models are trained on reduced size images due to limitations on graphics processing unit memory and training time. As computing hardware continues to advance, it has become feasible to train deep convolutional neural networks on high-resolution images without sacrificing detail by downscaling. This study examines the effect of increased resolution on CXR classification performance., Approach: We used the publicly available MIMIC-CXR-JPG dataset, comprising 377,110 high resolution CXR images for this study. We applied image downscaling from native resolution to 2048 × 2048    pixels , 1024 × 1024    pixels , 512 × 512    pixels , and 256 × 256    pixels and then we used the DenseNet121 and EfficientNet-B4 DL models to evaluate clinical task performance using these four downscaled image resolutions., Results: We find that while some clinical findings are more reliably labeled using high resolutions, many other findings are actually labeled better using downscaled inputs. We qualitatively verify that tasks requiring a large receptive field are better suited to downscaled low resolution input images, by inspecting effective receptive fields and class activation maps of trained models. Finally, we show that stacking an ensemble across resolutions outperforms each individual learner at all input resolutions while providing interpretable scale weights, indicating that diverse information is extracted across resolutions., Conclusions: This study suggests that instead of focusing solely on the finest image resolutions, multi-scale features should be emphasized for information extraction from high-resolution CXRs., (© 2023 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).)

Total joint arthroplasty is one of the most common surgeries in the United States, with almost a million procedures performed annually. Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) remain the most devastating complications associated with total joint replacement. Effective antibacterial prophylaxis after primary arthroplasty could substantially reduce incidence rate of PJI. In the present study we propose to provide post-arthroplasty prophylaxis via dual-analgesic loaded ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Our approach is based on previous studies that showed pronounced antibacterial activity of analgesic- and NSAID-loaded UHMWPE against Staphylococci. Here, we prepared bupivacaine/tolfenamic acid-loaded UHMWPE and assessed its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Dual-drug loaded UHMWPE yielded an additional 1-2 log reduction of bacteria, when compared with single-drug loaded UHMWPE. Analysis of the drug elution kinetics suggested that the observed increase in antibacterial activity is due to the increased tolfenamic acid elution from dual-drug loaded UHMWPE. We showed that the increased fractal dimension of the drug domains in UHMWPE could be associated with increased drug elution, leading to higher antibacterial activity. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers globally and is the second most common cancer in the male population in the US. Here we develop a study based on correlating the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained biopsy data with MALDI mass-spectrometric imaging data of the corresponding tissue to determine the cancerous regions and their unique chemical signatures and variations of the predicted regions with original pathological annotations. We obtain features from high-resolution optical micrographs of whole slide H&E stained data through deep learning and spatially register them with mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) data to correlate the chemical signature with the tissue anatomy of the data. We then use the learned correlation to predict prostate cancer from observed H&E images using trained coregistered MSI data. This multimodal approach can predict cancerous regions with ∼80% accuracy, which indicates a correlation between optical H&E features and chemical information found in MSI. We show that such paired multimodal data can be used for training feature extraction networks on H&E data which bypasses the need to acquire expensive MSI data and eliminates the need for manual annotation saving valuable time. Two chemical biomarkers were also found to be predicting the ground truth cancerous regions. This study shows promise in generating improved patient treatment trajectories by predicting prostate cancer directly from readily available H&E-stained biopsy images aided by coregistered MSI data.

Spatial heterogeneity in composition and organisation of the primary cell wall affects the mechanics of cellular morphogenesis. However, directly correlating cell wall composition, organisation and mechanics has been challenging. To overcome this barrier, we applied atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy to generate spatially correlated maps of chemical and mechanical properties for paraformaldehyde-fixed, intact Arabidopsis thaliana epidermal cell walls. AFM-IR spectra were deconvoluted by non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF) into a linear combination of IR spectral factors representing sets of chemical groups comprising different cell wall components. This approach enables quantification of chemical composition from IR spectral signatures and visualisation of chemical heterogeneity at nanometer resolution. Cross-correlation analysis of the spatial distribution of NMFs and mechanical properties suggests that the carbohydrate composition of cell wall junctions correlates with increased local stiffness. The predictive modeling literature for biomedical applications is dominated by biostatistical methods for survival analysis, and more recently some out of the box machine learning approaches. In this article, we show a presentation of a machine learning method appropriate for time-to-event modeling in the area of prostate cancer long-term disease progression. Using XGBoost adapted to long-term disease progression, we developed a predictive model for 118 788 patients with localized prostate cancer at diagnosis from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Our model accounted for patient censoring. Harrell's c-index for our model using only features available at the time of diagnosis was 0.757 95% confidence interval [0.756, 0.757]. Our results show that machine learning methods like XGBoost can be adapted to use accelerated failure time (AFT) with censoring to model long-term risk of disease progression. The long median survival justifies and requires censoring. Overall, we show that an existing machine learning approach can be used for AFT outcome modeling in prostate cancer, and more generally for other chronic diseases with long observation times., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the American Medical Informatics Association 2022.)

Understanding the mechanism of antiwear (AW) tribofilm formation and how to tune surface chemistry to control functionality is essential for the development of the next generation of oil lubricants. In particular, understanding and optimizing early AW tribofilm formation can increase the energy efficiency of mechanical systems. However, the mechanism for how these films form is not well understood. The majority of prior work has focused on analyzing only end-of-test surfaces long after the film has formed. In this work, we develop an in situ multimodal chemical imaging methodology to directly visualize the early formation of AW films on steel surfaces. We investigate an oil formulation containing a phosphorus-based additive commonly used to protect surfaces from wear and fatigue processes in machine elements, such as gears, bearings, and sliding contacts. Using nanoscale multimodal chemical imaging on combined platforms of atomic force microscopy (AFM) coupled directly with in situ nano-infrared (nano-IR) spectroscopy, and further combined ex situ with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), we demonstrate a direct correlation between changes in friction and local surface chemistry. In these experiments, the AFM probe acts as a single asperity contact to generate the tribofilm as well as a tool to analyze it in situ as it is forming. To verify our in situ measurements, we compare these results to the ex situ ToF-SIMS of macroscale block-on-ring tribometer-formed samples. The understanding gained here on how AW films form and how film properties can be modified by tuning the chemistry of the additives will facilitate developing transmission fluids to meet increasing demands for vehicle performance and efficiency.

Continuous advancement in nonvolatile and morphotropic beyond-Moore electronic devices requires integration of ferroelectric and semiconductor materials. The emergence of hafnium oxide (HfO 2 )-based ferroelectrics that are compatible with atomic-layer deposition has opened interesting and promising avenues of research. However, the origins of ferroelectricity and pathways to controlling it in HfO 2 are still mysterious. We demonstrate that local helium (He) implantation can activate ferroelectricity in these materials. The possible competing mechanisms, including He ion-induced molar volume changes, vacancy redistribution, vacancy generation, and activation of vacancy mobility, are analyzed. These findings both reveal the origins of ferroelectricity in this system and open pathways for nanoengineered binary ferroelectrics.

The optoelectronic performance of organic-inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP)-based devices has been improved in recent years. Particularly, solar cells fabricated using mixed-cations and mixed-halides have outperformed their single-cation and single-halide counterparts. Yet, a systematic evaluation of the microstructural behavior of mixed perovskites is missing despite their known composition-dependent photoinstability. Here, we explore microstructural inhomogeneity in (FAPbI 3 ) x (MAPbBr 3 ) 1- x using advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques. Contact potential difference (CPD) maps measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy show an increased fraction of grains exhibiting a low CPD with flat topography as MAPbBr 3 concentration is increased. The higher portion of low CPD contributes to asymmetric CPD distribution curves. Chemical analysis reveals these grains being rich in MA, Pb, and I. The composition-dependent phase segregation upon illumination, reflected on the emergence of a low-energy peak emission in the original photoluminescence spectra, arises from the formation of such grains with flat topology. Bias-dependent piezo-response force microscopy measurements, in these grains, further confirm vigorous ion migration and cause a hysteretic piezo-response. Our results, therefore, provide insights into the microstructural evaluation of phase segregation and ion migration in OIHPs pointing toward process optimization as a mean to further enhance their optoelectronic performance.

Ion migration is one of the most debated mechanisms and credited with multiple observed phenomena and performance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) semiconductor devices. However, to date, the migration of ions and their effects on MHPs are not still fully understood, largely due to a lack of direct observations of temporal ion migration. In this work, using direct observation of ion migration in-operando , we observe the hysteretic migration behavior of intrinsic ions ( i.e. , CH 3 NH 3 + and I - ) as well as reveal the migration behavior of CH 3 NH 3 + decomposition ions. We find that CH 3 NH 3 + decomposition products can be affected by light and accumulate at the interfaces under bias. These MHP decomposition products are tightly related to the device performance and stability. Complementary results of time-resolved Kelvin probe force microscopy (tr-KPFM) demonstrate a correlation between dynamics of these interfacial ions and charge carriers. Overall, we find that there are a number of mobile ions including CH 3 NH 3 + decomposition products in MHPs that need to be taken into account when measuring MHP device responses ( e.g. , charge dynamics) and should be considered in future optimization studies of MHP semiconductor devices.

Metal halide perovskite (MHP) solar cells have attracted worldwide research interest. Although it has been well established that grain, grain boundary, and grain facet affect MHPs optoelectronic properties, less is known about subgrain structures. Recently, MHP twin stripes, a subgrain feature, have stimulated extensive discussion due to the potential for both beneficial and detrimental effects of ferroelectricity on optoelectronic properties. Connecting the ferroic behavior of twin stripes in MHPs with crystal orientation will be a vital step to understand the ferroic nature and the effects of twin stripes. In this work, we studied the crystallographic orientation and ferroic properties of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 twin stripes, using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and advanced piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), respectively. Using EBSD, we discovered that the orientation relationship across the twin walls in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 is a 90° rotation about ⟨1̅1̅0⟩, with the ⟨030⟩ and ⟨111⟩ directions parallel to the direction normal to the surface. By careful inspection of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 PFM results including in-plane and out-of-plane PFM measurements, we demonstrate some nonferroelectric contributions to the PFM responses of this CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 sample, suggesting that the PFM signal in this CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 sample is affected by nonferroelectric and nonpiezoelectric forces. If there is piezoelectric response, it is below the detection sensitivity of our interferometric displacement sensor PFM (<0.615 pm/V). Overall, this work offers an integrated picture describing the crystallographic orientations and the origin of PFM signal of MHPs twin stripes, which is critical to understanding the ferroicity in MHPs.

The ability to spatially resolve the chemical distribution of compounds on a surface is important in many applications ranging from biological to material science. To this extent, we have recently introduced a hybrid atomic force microscopy (AFM)-mass spectrometry (MS) system for direct thermal desorption and pyrolysis of material with nanoscale chemical resolution. However, spatially resolved direct surface heating using local thermal desorption becomes challenging on material surfaces with low melting points, because the material will undergo a melting phase transition due to heat dissipation prior to onset of thermal desorption. Therefore, we developed an approach using mechanical sampling and collection of surface materials on an AFM cantilever probe tip for real-time analysis directly from the AFM tip. This approach allows for material to be concentrated directly onto the probe for subsequent MS analysis. We evaluate the performance metrics of the technique and demonstrate localized MS sampling from a candelilla wax matrix containing UV stabilizers avobenzone and oxinoxate from areas down to 250 nm × 250 nm. Overall, this approach removes heat dissipation into the bulk material allowing for a faster desorption and concentration of the gas phase analyte from a single heating pulse enabling higher signal levels from a given amount of material in a single sampling spot.Graphical abstract.

Nanoscale hyperspectral techniques-such as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS)-are critical to understand the optical response in plasmonic nanostructures, but as systems become increasingly complex, the required sampling density and acquisition times become prohibitive for instrumental and specimen stability. As a result, there has been a recent push for new experimental methodologies that can provide comprehensive information about a complex system, while significantly reducing the duration of the experiment. Here, we present a pan-sharpening approach to hyperspectral EELS analysis, where we acquire two datasets from the same region (one with high spatial resolution and one with high spectral fidelity) and combine them to achieve a single dataset with the beneficial properties of both. This work outlines a straightforward, reproducible pathway to reduced experiment times and higher signal-to-noise ratios, while retaining the relevant physical parameters of the plasmonic response, and is generally applicable to a wide range of spectroscopy modalities.

Materials ranging from adhesives, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, and personal care products are traditionally studied using macroscopic characterization techniques. However, their functionality is in reality defined by details of chemical organization on often noncrystalline matter with characteristic length scales on the order of microns to nanometers. Additionally, these materials are traditionally difficult to analyze using standard vacuum-based approaches that provide nanoscale chemical characterization due to their volatile and beam-sensitive nature. Therefore, approaches that operate under ambient conditions need to be developed that allow probing of nanoscale chemical phenomena and correlated functionality. Here, we demonstrate a tool for probing and visualizing local chemical environments and correlating them to material structure and functionality using advanced multimodal chemical imaging on a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM) and mass spectrometry (MS) system using tip-enhanced photothermal desorption with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). We demonstrate enhanced performance metrics of the technique for correlated imaging and point sampling and illustrate the applicability for the analysis of trace chemicals on a human hair, additives in adhesives on paper, and pharmaceuticals samples notoriously difficult to analyze in a vacuum environment. Overall, this approach of correlating local chemical environments to structure and functionality is key to advancing research in many fields ranging from biology, to medicine, to material science.

The gap in understanding how underlying chemical dynamics impact the functionality of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) leads to the controversy about the origin of many phenomena associated with ion migration in MHPs. In particular, the debate regarding the impact of ion migration on current-voltage ( I - V ) hysteresis of MHPs devices has lasted for many years, where the difficulty lies in directly uncovering the chemical dynamics, as well as identifying and separating the impact of specific ions. In this work, using a newly developed time-resolved time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry CH 3 NH 3 + and I - migrations in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 are directly observed, revealing hysteretic CH 3 NH 3 + and I - migrations. Additionally, hysteretic CH 3 NH 3 + migration is illumination-dependent. Correlating these results with the I - V characterization, this work uncovers that CH 3 NH 3 + redistribution can induce a remanent field leading to a spontaneous current in the device. It unveils that the CH 3 NH 3 + migration is responsible for the illumination-associated I - V hysteresis in MHPs. Hysteretic ion migration has not been uncovered and the contribution of any ions (e.g., CH 3 NH 3 + ) has not been specified before. The next generation optical, electronic, biological, and sensing devices as well as platforms will inevitably extend their architecture into the 3rd dimension to enhance functionality. In focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID), a helium gas field ion source can be used with an organometallic precursor gas to fabricate nanoscale structures in 3D with high-precision and smaller critical dimensions than focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID), traditional liquid metal source FIBID, or other additive manufacturing technology. In this work, we report the effect of beam current, dwell time, and pixel pitch on the resultant segment and angle growth for nanoscale 3D mesh objects. We note subtle beam heating effects, which impact the segment angle and the feature size. Additionally, we investigate the competition of material deposition and sputtering during the 3D FIBID process, with helium ion microscopy experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show complex 3D mesh structures measuring ~300 nm in the largest dimension, with individual features as small as 16 nm at full width half maximum (FWHM). These assemblies can be completed in minutes, with the underlying fabrication technology compatible with existing lithographic techniques, suggesting a higher-throughput pathway to integrating FIBID with established nanofabrication techniques.

A new approach to generate a two-photon up-conversion photoluminescence (PL) by directly exciting the gap states with continuous-wave (CW) infrared photoexcitation in solution-processing quasi-2D perovskite films [(PEA) 2 (MA) 4 Pb 5 Br 16 with n = 5] is reported. Specifically, a visible PL peaked at 520 nm is observed with the quadratic power dependence by exciting the gap states with CW 980 nm laser excitation, indicating a two-photon up-conversion PL occurring in quasi-2D perovskite films. Decreasing the gap states by reducing the n value leads to a dramatic decrease in the two-photon up-conversion PL signal. This confirms that the gap states are indeed responsible for generating the two-photon up-conversion PL in quasi-2D perovskites. Furthermore, mechanical scratching indicates that the different-n-value nanoplates are essentially uniformly formed in the quasi-2D perovskite films toward generating multi-photon up-conversion light emission. More importantly, the two-photon up-conversion PL is found to be sensitive to an external magnetic field, indicating that the gap states are essentially formed as spatially extended states ready for multi-photon excitation. Chemical analysis at the nanoscale is critical to advance our understanding of materials and systems from medicine and biology to material science and computing. Macroscale-observed phenomena in these systems are in the large part driven by processes that take place at the nanoscale and are highly heterogeneous. Therefore, there is a clear need to develop a new technology that enables correlative imaging of material functionalities with nanoscale spatial and chemical resolutions that will enable us to untangle the structure-function relationship of functional materials. Therefore, here, we report on the analytical figures of merit of the newly developed correlative chemical imaging technique of helium ion microscopy coupled with secondary ion mass spectrometry (HIM-SIMS) that enables multimodal topographical/chemical imaging of organic and inorganic materials at the nanoscale. In HIM-SIMS, a focused ion beam acts as a sputtering and ionization source for chemical analysis along with simultaneous high-resolution surface imaging, providing an unprecedented level of spatial resolution for gathering chemical information on organic and inorganic materials. In this work, we demonstrate HIM-SIMS as a platform for a next-generation tool for an in situ material design and analysis capable of down to 8 nm spatial resolution chemical imaging, layered metal structure imaging in depth profiling, single graphene layer detection, and spectral analysis of metals, metal oxides, and polymers.

Optoelectronic devices based on metal halide perovskites, including solar cells and light-emitting diodes, have attracted tremendous research attention globally in the last decade. Due to their potential to achieve high carrier mobilities, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials can enable high-performance, solution-processed field-effect transistors (FETs) for next-generation, low-cost, flexible electronic circuits and displays. However, the performance of perovskite FETs is hampered predominantly by device instabilities, whose origin remains poorly understood. Here, perovskite single-crystal FETs based on methylammonium lead bromide are studied and device instabilities due to electrochemical reactions at the interface between the perovskite and gold source-drain top contacts are investigated. Despite forming the contacts by a gentle, soft lamination method, evidence is found that even at such "ideal" interfaces, a defective, intermixed layer is formed at the interface upon biasing of the device. Using a bottom-contact, bottom-gate architecture, it is shown that it is possible to minimize such a reaction through a chemical modification of the electrodes, and this enables fabrication of perovskite single-crystal FETs with high mobility of up to ≈15 cm 2 V -1 s -1 at 80 K. The ability to probe a material's electromechanical functionality on the nanoscale is critical to applications from energy storage and computing to biology and medicine. Voltage-modulated atomic force microscopy (VM-AFM) has become a mainstay characterization tool for investigating these materials due to its ability to locally probe electromechanically responsive materials with spatial resolution from micrometers to nanometers. However, with the wide popularity of VM-AFM techniques such as piezoresponse force microscopy and electrochemical strain microscopy there has been a rise in reports of nanoscale electromechanical functionality, including hysteresis, in materials that should be incapable of exhibiting piezo- or ferroelectricity. Explanations for the origins of unexpected nanoscale phenomena have included new material properties, surface-mediated polarization changes, and/or spatially resolved behavior that is not present in bulk measurements. At the same time, it is well known that VM-AFM measurements are susceptible to numerous forms of crosstalk, and, despite efforts within the AFM community, a global approach for eliminating this has remained elusive. In this work, we develop a method for easily demonstrating the presence of hysteretic ( i . e ., "false ferroelectric") long-range interactions between the sample and cantilever body. This method should be easy to implement in any VM-AFM measurement. We then go on to demonstrate fully quantitative and repeatable nanoelectromechanical characterization using an interferometer. These quantitative measurements are critical for a wide range of devices including MEMS actuators and sensors, memristor, energy storage, and memory.

The unique properties of ferroelectric materials enable a plethora of applications, which are hindered by the phenomenon known as ferroelectric fatigue that leads to the degradation of ferroelectric properties with polarization cycling. Multiple microscopic models explaining fatigue have been suggested; however, the chemical origins remain poorly understood. Here, we utilize multimodal chemical imaging that combines atomic force microscopy with time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry to explore the chemical phenomena associated with fatigue in PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 (PZT) thin films. Investigations reveal that the degradation of ferroelectric properties is correlated with a local chemical change and migration of electrode ions into the PZT structure. Density functional theory simulations support the experimental results and demonstrate stable doping of the thin surface PZT layer with copper ions, leading to a decrease in the spontaneous polarization. Overall, the performed research allows for the observation and understanding of the chemical phenomena associated with polarization cycling and their effects on ferroelectric functionality.

Seed coatings improve germination and offer higher crop yields through a blend of active ingredients (such as insecticides and fungicides), polymers, waxes, fillers, and pigments. To reach their full potential, fundamental formulation challenges bridging structure and function need to be addressed. In some instances, during industrial-volume packing and transportation, coated seeds do not flow well through elevators, conveyers, and applicators, which may reduce yield and add cost. In this work, we illustrate a combinatorial chemical imaging approach to study seed coatings at the microscale to link chemical and physical properties responsible for low seed flowability. The local chemical composition was examined using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and at comparable length scales, the local adhesive properties were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) force volume mapping. The link between the chemical and the adhesive properties was established by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). The correlative multimodal imaging approach developed here utilizing AFM force volume mapping, ToF-SIMS chemical mapping, and data analytics offers a path for linking function with localized chemistry when investigating multicomponent soft material systems.

Multimodal chemical imaging simultaneously offers high-resolution chemical and physical information with nanoscale and, in select cases, atomic resolution. By coupling modalities that collect physical and chemical information, we can address scientific problems in biological systems, battery and fuel cell research, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, photovoltaics, medicine, and many others. The combined systems enable the local correlation of material properties with chemical makeup, making fundamental questions of how chemistry and structure drive functionality approachable. In this Review, we present recent progress and offer a perspective for chemical imaging used to characterize a variety of samples by a number of platforms. Specifically, we present cases of infrared and Raman spectroscopies combined with scanning probe microscopy; optical microscopy and mass spectrometry; nonlinear optical microscopy; and, finally, ion, electron, and probe microscopies with mass spectrometry. We also discuss the challenges associated with the use of data originated by the combinatorial hardware, analysis, and machine learning as well as processing tools necessary for the interpretation of multidimensional data acquired from multimodal studies.

Polarization switching is a fundamental feature of ferroelectric materials, enabling a plethora of applications and captivating the attention of the scientific community for over half a century. Many previous studies considered ferroelectric switching as a purely physical process, whereas polarization is fully controlled by the superposition of electric fields. However, screening charge is required for thermodynamic stability of the single domain state that is of interest in many technological applications. The screening process has always been assumed to be fast; thus, the rate-limiting phenomena were believed to be domain nucleation and domain wall dynamics. In this manuscript, we demonstrate that polarization switching under an atomic force microscopy tip leads to reversible ionic motion in the top 3 nm of PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 surface layer. This evidence points to a strong chemical component to a process believed to be purely physical and has major implications for understanding ferroelectric materials, making ferroelectric devices, and interpreting local ferroelectric switching.

Optoelectronic behavior in materials such as organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites depend on a complex interplay between fast (electronic) and slower (ionic) processes. These processes are thought to be influenced by structural inhomogeneities (e.g. interfaces and grain boundaries) bringing forward the necessity for development of techniques capable of correlating nanostructure and photo-transport behavior. While Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) is ideally suited to map surface potentials on relevant length scales, it lacks sufficient temporal resolution to extract the meaningful system dynamics. Here, we develop a time resolved surface photovoltage (SPV) measurement based on full information capture of the photodetector stream during open loop KPFM operation. G-Mode, or G-KPFM allows quantification of SPV with microsecond temporal and nanoscale spatial resolution. Using this technique, we observe concurrent spatial and fast temporal variations in the SPV generated across a methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) thin film, a possible indicator relating microstructure with heterogenous photo-transport behavior. We further demonstrate the advantage of adopting big data analytics including unsupervised clustering methods to quickly discern spatial variability in the information rich SPV dataset. Beyond G-KPFM, such clustering methods will be useful for interpretation of the multidimensional datasets arising from the growing number of time resolved KPFM approaches now available.

The extraordinary optoelectronic performance of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites has resulted in extensive efforts to unravel their properties. Recently, observations of ferroic twin domains in methylammonium lead triiodide drew significant attention as a possible explanation for the current-voltage hysteretic behaviour in these materials. However, the properties of the twin domains, their local chemistry and the chemical impact on optoelectronic performance remain unclear. Here, using multimodal chemical and functional imaging methods, we unveil the mechanical origin of the twin domain contrast observed with piezoresponse force microscopy in methylammonium lead triiodide. By combining experimental results with first principles simulations we reveal an inherent coupling between ferroelastic twin domains and chemical segregation. These results reveal an interplay of ferroic properties and chemical segregation on the optoelectronic performance of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, and offer an exploratory path to improving functional devices.

Bottlebrush polymers are important for a variety of applications ranging from drug delivery to electronics. The functional flexibility of the branched sidechains has unique assembly properties when compared to linear block polymer systems. However, reports of direct observation of molecular reorganization have been sparse. This information is necessary to enhance the understanding of the structure-property relationships in these systems and yield a rational design approach for novel polymeric materials. In this work, we report direct visualization of bottlebrush molecular organization and the formation of nematic-type ordering in an amorphous polymer bottlebrush system, captured with plasma etching and helium ion microscopy. By observing the unperturbed structure of this material at high resolution and quantifying image features, we were able to qualitatively link experimental results with structures predicted by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The direct visualization and computation workflow developed in this work can be applied to a broad variety of polymers with different architectures, linking imaging results with other, independent channels of information for better understanding and control of these classes of materials.

The coupling between ionic degrees of freedom and ferroelectricity has received renewed attention in recent years, given that surface electrochemical processes have been shown to be intrinsically linked to ferroelectric phase stability in ultrathin ferroelectric films. However, the coupling between bulk ionic transport and local polarization switching has received less attention, as typically the bulk ionic mobilities are low for common ferroelectrics at room temperature. Here, we use the coupled band-excitation method in conjunction with site-correlated time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, to determine the coupling between ferroelectric switching and ionic motion in single crystal KTiOPO 4 . The local scanning probe measurements indicate a substantial softening, as determined by resonant frequency changes, during reversal of polarization along one direction. These changes are correlated with the mass spectrometry measurements, showing a polarization-dependent accumulation of K ions at the polar surfaces, thus corroborating their role in the screening process. These studies shed light on the interplay between ionic dynamics and bulk ferroelectric switching and have implications for studies on domain wall conductivity, chemical switching, and bulk and surface-screening phenomena.

Strongly correlated vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) is one of the most promising materials that exhibits a temperature-driven, metal-insulator transition (MIT) near room temperature. The ability to manipulate the MIT at nanoscale offers both insight into understanding the energetics of phase transition and a promising potential for nanoelectronic devices. In this work, we study nanoscale electrochemical modifications of the MIT in epitaxial VO 2 thin films using a combined approach with scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and theoretical calculations. We find that applying electric voltages of different polarity through an SPM tip locally changes the contact potential difference and conductivity on the surface of VO 2 by modulating the oxygen stoichiometry. We observed nearly 2 orders of magnitude change in resistance between positive and negative biased-tip written areas of the film, demonstrating the electric field modulated MIT behavior at the nanoscale. Density functional theory calculations, benchmarked against more accurate many-body quantum Monte Carlo calculations, provide information on the formation energetics of oxygen defects that can be further manipulated by strain. This study highlights the crucial role of oxygen vacancies in controlling the MIT in epitaxial VO 2 thin films, useful for developing advanced electronic and iontronic devices.

The formation of an electric double layer in ionic liquid (IL) can electrostatically induce charge carriers and/or intercalate ions in and out of the lattice which can trigger a large change of the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of materials and even modify the crystal structure. We present a systematic study of ionic liquid gating of exfoliated 2D molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ) devices and correlate the resultant electrical properties to the electrochemical doping via ion migration during the IL biasing process. A nearly 9 orders of magnitude modulation of the MoO 3 conductivity is obtained for the two types of ionic liquids that are investigated. In addition, notably rapid on/off switching was realized through a lithium-containing ionic liquid whereas much slower modulation was induced via oxygen extraction/intercalation. Time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry confirms the Li intercalation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out to examine the underlying metallization mechanism. Results of short-pulse tests show the potential of these MoO 3 devices as neuromorphic computing elements due to their synaptic plasticity.

The ability to control thin-film growth has led to advances in our understanding of fundamental physics as well as to the emergence of novel technologies. However, common thin-film growth techniques introduce a number of limitations related to the concentration of defects on film interfaces and surfaces that limit the scope of systems that can be produced and studied experimentally. Here, we developed an ion-beam based subtractive fabrication process that enables creation and modification of thin films with pre-defined thicknesses. To accomplish this we transformed a multimodal imaging platform that combines time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with atomic force microscopy to a unique fabrication tool that allows for precise sputtering of the nanometer-thin layers of material. To demonstrate fabrication of thin-films with in situ feedback and control on film thickness and functionality we systematically studied thickness dependence of ferroelectric switching of lead-zirconate-titanate, within a single epitaxial film. Our results demonstrate that through a subtractive film fabrication process we can control the piezoelectric response as a function of film thickness as well as improve on the overall piezoelectric response versus an untreated film.

Atomic force microscopy is widely used for nanoscale characterization of materials by scientists worldwide. The long-held belief of ambient AFM is that the tip is generally chemically inert but can be functionalized with respect to the studied sample. This implies that basic imaging and scanning procedures do not affect surface and bulk chemistry of the studied sample. However, an in-depth study of the confined chemical processes taking place at the tip-surface junction and the associated chemical changes to the material surface have been missing as of now. Here, we used a hybrid system that combines time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with an atomic force microscopy to investigate the chemical interactions that take place at the tip-surface junction. Investigations showed that even basic contact mode AFM scanning is able to modify the surface of the studied sample. In particular, we found that the silicone oils deposited from the AFM tip into the scanned regions and spread to distances exceeding 15 μm from the tip. These oils were determined to come from standard gel boxes used for the storage of the tips. The explored phenomena are important for interpreting and understanding results of AFM mechanical and electrical studies relying on the state of the tip-surface junction.

Nanoporous materials are key components in a vast number of applications from energy to drug delivery and to agriculture. However, the number of ways to analytically quantify the salient features of these materials, for example: surface structure, pore shape, and size, remain limited. The most common approach is gas absorption, where volumetric gas absorption and desorption are measured. This technique has some fundamental drawbacks such as low sample throughput and a lack of direct surface visualization. In this work, we demonstrate Helium Ion Microscopy (HIM) as a tool for imaging and quantification of pores in industrially relevant SiO 2 catalyst supports. We start with the fundamental principles of ion-sample interaction, and build on this knowledge to experimentally observe and quantify surface pores by using the HIM and image data analytics. We contrast our experimental results to gas absorption and demonstrate full statistical agreement between two techniques. The principles behind the theoretical, experimental, and analytical framework presented herein offer an automated framework for visualization and quantification of pore structures in a wide variety of materials.

Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a powerful surface-sensitive characterization tool allowing the imaging of chemical properties over a wide range of organic and inorganic material systems. This technique allows precise studies of chemical composition with sub-100-nm lateral and nanometer depth spatial resolution. However, comprehensive interpretation of ToF-SIMS results is challenging because of the very large data volume and high dimensionality. Furthermore, investigation of samples with pronounced topographical features is complicated by systematic and measureable shifts in the mass spectrum. In this work we developed an approach for the interpretation of the ToF-SIMS data, based on the advanced data analytics. Along with characterization of the chemical composition, our approach allows extraction of the sample surface morphology from a time of flight registration technique. This approach allows one to perform correlated investigations of surface morphology, biological function, and chemical composition of Arabidopsis roots.

Hybrid perovskites, as emerging multifunctional semiconductors, have demonstrated dual electronic/ionic conduction properties. We report a metal/ion interaction induced p-i-n junction across slightly n-type doped MAPbI 3 single crystals with Au/MAPbI 3 /Ag configuration based on interface dependent Seebeck effect, Hall effect and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis. The organic cations (MA + ) interact with Au atoms, forming positively charged coordination complexes at Au/MAPbI 3 interface, whereas iodine anions (I - ) can react with Ag contacts, leading to interfacial ionic polarization. Such metal/ion interactions establish a p-doped region near the Au/MAPbI 3 interface due to the formation of MA + vacancies, and an n-doped region near the Ag/MAPbI 3 interface due to formation of I - vacancies, consequently forming a p-i-n junction across the crystal in Au/MAPbI 3 /Ag configuration. Therefore, the metal/ion interaction plays a role in determining the surface electronic structure and semiconducting properties of hybrid perovskites.

Multi-material systems interfaced with 2D materials, or entirely new 3D heterostructures can lead to the next generation multi-functional device architectures. Physical and chemical control at the nanoscale is also necessary tailor these materials as functional structures approach physical limit. 2D transition metal thiophosphates (TPS), with a general formulae Cu 1-x In 1+x/3 P 2 S 6, have shown ferroelectric polarization behavior with a T c above the room temperature, making them attractive candidates for designing both: chemical and physical properties. Our previous studies have demonstrated that ferroic order persists on the surface, and that spinoidal decomposition of ferroelectric and paraelectric phases occurs in non-stoichiometric Cu/In ratio formulations. Here, we discuss the chemical changes induced by helium ion irradiation. We explore the TPS compound library with varying Cu/In ratio, using Helium Ion Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). We correlate physical nano- and micro- structures to the helium ion dose, as well as chemical signatures of copper, oxygen and sulfur. Our ToF-SIMS results show that He ion irradiation leads to oxygen penetration into the irradiated areas, and diffuses along the Cu-rich domains to the extent of the stopping distance of the helium ions.

We report a simple route to engineer ultrathin polymer brush surfaces with wrinkled morphologies using post-polymerization modification (PPM), where the length scale of the buckled features can be tuned from hundreds of nanometers to one micrometer using PPM reaction time. We show that partial crosslinking of the outer layer of the polymer brush under poor solvent conditions is critical to obtain wrinkled morphologies upon swelling. Characterization of the PPM kinetics and swelling behavior via ellipsometry and the through-thickness composition profile via time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) provided keys insight into parameters influencing the buckling behavior.

Hydrogen gas is formed when Mg corrodes in water; however, the manner and extent to which the hydrogen may also enter the Mg metal is poorly understood. Such knowledge is critical as stress corrosion cracking (SCC)/embrittlement phenomena limit many otherwise promising structural and functional uses of Mg. Here, we report via D 2 O/D isotopic tracer and H 2 O exposures with characterization by secondary ion mass spectrometry, inelastic neutron scattering vibrational spectrometry, electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography techniques direct evidence that hydrogen rapidly penetrated tens of micrometers into Mg metal after only 4 h of exposure to water at room temperature. Further, technologically important microalloying additions of <1 wt % Zr and Nd used to improve the manufacturability and mechanical properties of Mg significantly increased the extent of hydrogen ingress, whereas Al additions in the 2-3 wt % range did not. Segregation of hydrogen species was observed at regions of high Mg/Zr/Nd nanoprecipitate density and at Mg(Zr) metastable solid solution microstructural features. We also report evidence that this ingressed hydrogen was unexpectedly present in the alloy as nanoconfined, molecular H 2 . These new insights provide a basis for strategies to design Mg alloys to resist SCC in aqueous environments as well as potentially impact functional uses such as hydrogen storage where increased hydrogen uptake is desired.

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) is a transparent semiconductor which has demonstrated excellent electrical performance as thin-film transistors (TFTs). However, a high-temperature activation process is generally required which is incompatible for next-generation flexible electronic applications. In this work, He + irradiation is demonstrated as an athermal activation process for a-IGZO TFTs. Controlling the He + dose enables the tuning of charge density, and a dose of 1 × 10 14 He + /cm 2 induces a change in charge density of 2.3 × 10 12 cm -2 . Time-dependent transport measurements and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) indicate that the He + -induced trapped charge is introduced because of preferential oxygen-vacancy generation. Scanning microwave impedance microscopy confirms that He + irradiation improves the conductivity of the a-IGZO. For realization of a permanent activation, IGZO was exposed with a He + dose of 5 × 10 14 He + /cm 2 and then aged 24 h to allow decay of the trapped oxide charge originating for electron-hole pair generation. The resultant shift in the charge density is primarily attributed to oxygen vacancies generated by He + sputtering in the near-surface region.

Direct write with a liquid precursor using an ion beam in situ, allows fabrication of nanostructures with higher purity than using gas phase deposition. Specifically, positively charged helium ions, when compared to electrons, localize the reaction zone to a single-digit nanometer scale. However, to control the interaction of the ion beam with the liquid precursor, as well as enable single digit fabrication, a comprehensive understanding of the radiolytic process, and the role of secondary electrons has to be developed. Here, we demonstrate an approach for directly writing platinum nanostructures from aqueous solution using a helium ion microscope, and discuss possible mechanisms for the beam-induced particle growth in the framework of Born-Oppenheimer and real-time electron dynamics models. We illustrate the nanoparticle nucleation and growth parameters through data analysis of in situ acquired movie data, and correlate these results to a fully encompassing, time-dependent, quantum dynamical simulation that takes into account both quantum and classical interactions. Finally, sub-15 nm resolution platinum structures generated in liquid are demonstrated.

The ability to engineer the thermal conductivity of materials allows us to control the flow of heat and derive novel functionalities such as thermal rectification, thermal switching and thermal cloaking. While this could be achieved by making use of composites and metamaterials at bulk length-scales, engineering the thermal conductivity at micro- and nano-scale dimensions is considerably more challenging. In this work, we show that the local thermal conductivity along a single Si nanowire can be tuned to a desired value (between crystalline and amorphous limits) with high spatial resolution through selective helium ion irradiation with a well-controlled dose. The underlying mechanism is understood through molecular dynamics simulations and quantitative phonon-defect scattering rate analysis, where the behaviour of thermal conductivity with dose is attributed to the accumulation and agglomeration of scattering centres at lower doses. Beyond a threshold dose, a crystalline-amorphous transition was observed.

We investigate manifestations of topological order in monoaxial helimagnet Cr&#95;{1/3}NbS&#95;{2} by performing transport measurements on ultrathin crystals. Upon sweeping the magnetic field perpendicularly to the helical axis, crystals thicker than one helix pitch (48 nm) but much thinner than the magnetic domain size (∼1  μm) are found to exhibit sharp and hysteretic resistance jumps. We show that these phenomena originate from transitions between topological sectors with a different number of magnetic solitons. This is confirmed by measurements on crystals thinner than 48 nm-in which the topological sector cannot change-that do not exhibit any jump or hysteresis. Our results show the ability to deterministically control the topological sector of finite-size Cr&#95;{1/3}NbS&#95;{2} and to detect intersector transitions by transport measurements.

The key to advancing materials is to understand and control their structure and chemistry. However, thorough chemical characterization is challenging since existing techniques characterize only a few properties of the specimen, thereby necessitating multiple measurement platforms to acquire the necessary information. The multimodal combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and mass spectrometry (MS) transcends existing analytical capabilities for nanometer scale spatially resolved correlation of the chemical and physical properties of a sample surface. One such hybrid system employs heated AFM cantilevers for thermal desorption (TD) sampling of molecules from a surface and subsequent gas phase ionization and detection of the liberated species by MS. Herein, we report on the use of voltage pulse trains to tailor cantilever heating such that spot sampling size was reduced and mass spectral signal was improved compared to constant voltage, static heating of the cantilever. Desorption efficiency (DE), defined as the quotient of the mass spectral signal intensity and the volume of the desorption crater, was used to judge the effectiveness of a particular tailored heating function. To guide the development and optimization of the heating functions and aid in interpreting experimental results, a 1D finite element model was developed that predicted the cantilever response to different heating functions. Three tailored heating functions that used different combinations, magnitudes, and durations of rectangular voltage pulses, were used for surface spot sampling. The resultant sampling spot size and DE were compared to the same metrics obtained with the conventional method that uses a single voltage pulse. Using a model system composed of a thin film of ink containing pigment yellow 74 as a model system, desorption craters shrunk from 2 μm, using the conventional approach, to 310 nm using the optimum tailored heating function. This same pulsed heating function produced a 381× improvement in the DE and an 8× improvement in spatial resolution compared to the conventional heating approach showing that signal/amount of material sampled was improved significantly by this new cantilever heating strategy.

Domain formation and ferroelectric switching is fundamentally inseparable from polarization screening, which on free surfaces can be realized via band bending and ionic adsorption. In the latter case, polarization switching is intrinsically coupled to the surface electrochemical phenomena, and the electrochemical stage can control kinetics and induce long-range interactions. However, despite extensive evidence toward the critical role of surface electrochemistry, little is known about the nature of the associated processes. Here we combine SPM tip induce polarization switching and secondary ion mass spectrometry to explore the evolution of chemical state of ferroelectric during switching. Surprisingly, we find that even pristine surfaces contain ions (e.g., Cl - ) that are not anticipated based on chemistry of the system and processing. In the ferroelectric switching regime, we find surprising changes in surface chemistry, including redistribution of base cations. At higher voltages in the electroforming regime significant surface deformation was observed and associated with a strong ion intermixing.

Despite the frequent use of noble gas ion irradiation of graphene, the atomistic-scale details, including the effects of dose, energy, and ion bombardment species on defect formation, and the associated dynamic processes involved in the irradiations and subsequent relaxation have not yet been thoroughly studied. Here, we simulated the irradiation of graphene with noble gas ions and the subsequent effects of annealing. Lattice defects, including nanopores, were generated after the annealing of the irradiated graphene, which was the result of structural relaxation that allowed the vacancy-type defects to coalesce into a larger defect. Larger nanopores were generated by irradiation with a series of heavier noble gas ions, due to a larger collision cross section that led to more detrimental effects in the graphene, and by a higher ion dose that increased the chance of displacing the carbon atoms from graphene. Overall trends in the evolution of defects with respect to a dose, as well as the defect characteristics, were in good agreement with experimental results. Additionally, the statistics in the defect types generated by different irradiating ions suggested that the most frequently observed defect types were Stone-Thrower-Wales (STW) defects for He(+) irradiation and monovacancy (MV) defects for all other ion irradiations.
