Recent excavations of Ifri Oudadane, a prehistoric rockshelter on the Mediterranean coast of NW Morocco, yielded a rich marine and terrestrial fauna. We present an analysis of the shellfish remains (exoskeleton-bearing aquatic invertebrates) from the 2011 trench, covering the Epipaleolithic and Early Neolithic levels. A total of 4,415 liters of sediment contained 8,749 specimens (MNI) of at least 40 species of shellfish: 12 bivalves, 24 gastropods, one tusk shell, barnacles, crabs, and sea urchins. The mean abundance of shellfish was 2 MNI per liter. Limpets (Patellidae), topshells (Trochidae), mussels (Mytilidae), and rockshells (Muricidae) formed 98% of the total mollusk fauna and were part of the diet; limpets prevailed in Epipaleolithic levels and topshells in Neolithic ones. Evidence was found for a systematic butchering of topshells (Phorcus turbinatus): the shells in Epipaleolithic levels were mostly smashed while topshells in Neolithic levels were usually topped in a uniform way. Seven species of mollusks showed traces of manipulation and were used as ornament or tools. Species used as food, such as limpets, topshells, and mussels, never show any indications of being used as ornament or tools, and the mollusks that were used as jewelry or tools were not part of the diet.

Central Asia has been an important region connecting the different parts of Eurasia throughout history and prehistory, with large states developing in this region during the Iron Age. Archaeogenomics is a powerful addition to the zooarchaeological toolkit for understanding the relation of these societies to animals. Here, we present the genetic identification of a goitered gazelle specimen (Gazella subgutturosa) at the site Gazimulla-Tepa, in modern-day Uzbekistan, confirming hunting of the species in the region during the Iron Age. The sample was directly radiocarbon dated to 2724-2439 calBP. A phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial genome places the individual into the modern variation of G. subgutturosa. Our data does represent both the first ancient DNA and the first nuclear DNA sequences of this species. The lack of genomic resources available for this gazelle and related species prevented us from performing a more in-depth analysis of the nuclear sequences generated. Therefore, we are making our sequence data available to the research community to facilitate other research of this nowadays threatened species which has been subject to human hunting for several millennia across its entire range on the Asian continent.

Rough-skinned newts, Taricha granulosa, which contain tetrodotoxin (TTX), a potent neurotoxin, are widely distributed along the west-coast of North America up to British Columbia (BC), Canada, and Southeast Alaska. Their genetic population structure using DNA-microsatellites and the TTX-content of specimens from British Columbia (Prince Rupert area) and Alaska (Revillagigedo Island, Shelter Island, and Juneau) were analysed. TTX-concentrations were low in newts from BC and Revillagigedo Island, but high in specimens from mainland Juneau, which had been deliberately introduced from Shelter Island, where TTX was not detectable in the individuals sampled. No significant genetic differences were detected between these populations, which may correlate with the high intraspecies variability of TTX. It is still an open question, which factors favour or induce the toxin production in the newts.

Wheat is regarded as one of the most important West Asian domesticates that were introduced into Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age China. Despite a growing body of archaeological data, the timing and routes of its dispersal remain controversial. New radiocarbon (14C) dating evidence from six archaeological sites in the Shandong and Liaoning Peninsulas and Bayesian modelling of available 14C data from China suggest that wheat appeared in the lower Yellow River around 2600 Before Common Era (bce), followed by Gansu and Xinjiang around 1900 bce and finally occurred in the middle Yellow River and Tibet regions by 1600 bce. These results neither support long-standing hypotheses of a progressive spread of wheat agriculture from Xinjiang or Gansu to eastern China nor suggest a nearly synchronous appearance in this vast zone, but corroborate transmission to lower Yellow River elites as an exotic good through cultural interactions with the Eurasian steppe along north–south routes. The timing and routes of wheat dispersal into China remain controversial. Now, new evidence from radiocarbon dating and Bayesian chronological modelling suggest that wheat first appeared in the lower Yellow River around 2600 bce and then spread westward.

European mouflons (Ovis orientalis musimon) are Mediterranean sheep that were introduced worldwide as park and game animals during the last few centuries. Today, European mouflons are endangered in their natural refuge areas. Mouflons are able to interbreed with domestic breeds to form fertile hybrids of an intermediate phenotype. As some introduced mouflon populations were deliberately crossed with primitive domestic breeds to improve their hardiness and trophy size and as evidence of uncontrolled interbreeding exists, the alleged purity of most mouflon populations has been debated for decades. In this study, we developed a genetic test to separate pure bred mouflons and domestic sheep from their hybrids. We searched for hybridization using insertionally polymorphic endogenous retroviruses and a set of novel microsatellites. Three instances were found of domestic sheep alleles in a retrotype dataset out of 192 mouflons from Western Germany. Considering the combined outcome of microsatellite and retrotype profiling, the amount of hybridization is negligible. We assume that the selective hunting of animals that show signs of hybridization in their phenotype is responsible for the low number of hybrids.

The common hamster (Cricetus cricetus L.), a rodent of the Eurasian steppes and agricultural areas, is threatened by habitat loss. Remnant populations in Western and Central Europe are small, isolated and genetically impoverished. The populations of Belgium, The Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany (BNN), for which Nehring proposed the epiphet canescens, are most affected by this decline. They are distinguished from more eastern populations by large, white areas on throat, chest and forelegs. These traits are sometimes also found in other populations, which casts doubt on their value as diagnostic characteristics. Here, we show that the frequency of occurrence of relatively large chest spots, chin streaks and cuffs on the forelegs is highest in BNN, where a white chest spot occurs in 67–100 % of the sampled individuals, compared to 0–8 % in Central and Eastern European populations. Additionally, hamsters from the Upper Rhine area also display relatively high frequencies of these characters (7–44 %). This suggests a common origin of BNN and Upper Rhine hamsters and an ancient expansion route along the Rhine Valley. A supplementary genetic study of two mitochondrial genes revealed extremely low diversity in both BNN and Upper Rhine hamsters but also clear differentiation and isolation between the two remaining relict populations of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The arid climate of many regions within Central Asia often leads to excellent archaeological preservation, especially in sealed funerary contexts, allowing for ancient DNA analyses. While geneticists have looked at human remains, clothes, tools, and other burial objects are often neglected. In this paper, we present the results of an ancient DNA study on Bronze Age leather objects excavated from tombs of the Wupu cemetery in the Hami Oasis and Yanghai cemetery in the Turpan Oasis, both in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. In addition to species identification of goat ( Capra aegagrus/hircus), sheep ( Ovis orientalis/aries), and cattle ( Bos primigenius/taurus), mitochondrial haplogroups were determined for several samples. Our results show that Bronze Age domesticated goats and sheep from the Hami and Turpan oases possessed identical or closely related haplotypes to modern domestic animals of this area. The absence of leather produced from wild animals emphasizes the importance of animal husbandry in the cultures of Wupu and Yanghai.

ZusammenfassungEine 33jährige Patientin fiel klinisch erstmals aufgrund krampfartiger rechtsseitiger Oberbauchschmerzen auf. Sonographisch fanden sich mehrere Leberherde mit ungleichmäßigem Echomuster, die computer- tomographisch und szintigraphisch übereinstimmend als fokal noduläre Hyperplasie (FNH) interpretiert wurden. Ein in der Folge zu beobachtender starker Lipaseanstieg wurde unter der Verdachtsdiagnose einer akuten Pankreatitis konservativ behandelt, worauf eine kurzfristige Senkung der Serumlipase zu beobachten war. Wenige Monate später kam es erneut zu einer massiven abdominellen Schmerzsymptomatik zusammen mit einer meßbaren Zunahme des Bauchumfangs und palpablen Knoten in der Leber. Sowohl die Leberfunktionsszintigraphie als auch die statische Leberszintigraphie zeigten eine deutlich reduzierte Perfusion, Funktion und RES-Aktivität im Bereich der Raumforderungen. Eine anschließend durchgeführte Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET) mit F-18-Fluorodeoxyglukose (FDG) wies einen erheblich gesteigerten Glukosemetabolismus der intrahepatischen Raumforderungen nach. Die Histologie mehrerer Biopsien ergab eine hepatische Metastasierung eines Azinuszellkarzinoms des Pankreas. Unter einer daraufhin eingeleiteten systemischen und regionalen Chemotherapie konnte zunächst eine deutliche Remission erreicht werden, die sich auch durch eine Kon- troll-FDG-PET sehr gut objektivieren ließ. Im weiteren Verlauf kam es dann allerdings wieder zu einer deutlichen Tumorprogression, die in einer nachfolgenden PET sowohl als Größenzunahme der Raumforderungen als auch durch einen zunehmenden Glukosemetabolismus semiquantitativ erfaßbar war. Die Patientin verstarb im Leberausfallkoma 15 Monate nach histologischer Stellung der Diagnose.
