3. Detection of Degraded Acacia tree species using deep neural networks on uav drone imagery

Abstract

Deep-learning-based image classification and object detection has been applied successfully to tree monitoring. However, studies of tree crowns and fallen trees, especially on flood inundated areas, remain largely unexplored. Detection of degraded tree trunks on natural environments such as water, mudflats, and natural vegetated areas is challenging due to the mixed colour image backgrounds. In this paper, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, with embedded RGB cameras were used to capture the fallen Acacia Xanthophloea trees from six designated plots around Lake Nakuru, Kenya. Motivated by the need to detect fallen trees around the lake, two well-established deep neural networks, i.e. Faster Region-based Convolution Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) and Retina-Net were used for fallen tree detection. A total of 7,590 annotations of three classes on 256 x 256 image patches were used for this study. Abstract

The spider family Sicariidae Keyserling, 1880 represented by the synanthropic Mediterranean recluse spider, Loxosceles rufescens (Dufour, 1820), is reported in the Philippines for the first time, based on morphological and molecular data. The introduced spider was observed in a small cave (Kamantigue Cave) in Lobo, Batangas Province. Considering the medical importance of this spider, the proximity of its habitat to human habitation and tourist sites poses a potential public health concern.This study reports on the first record of the family Sicariidae in the Philippines and the fourth recorded occurrence of L. rufescens in Southeast Asia.

Existe una amplia literatura sobre las motivaciones que llevan a diversos inversionistas a integrar factores ambientales, sociales y de gobierno corporativo (ASG) en sus estrategias; sin embargo, los estudios sobre esta temática se centran en los mercados desarrollados y no detallan con evidencia si estos factores, a través de las potenciales controversias que generan en su ausencia, tienen efectos significativos en la valoración de instrumentos financieros, por ej., acciones o bonos emitidos por empresas. Por esta razón, el presente estudio analiza y demuestra con evidencia estadística que las controversias asociadas a factores ASG y relacionadas con las acciones en el mercado mexicano aún no se encuentran integradas en las valuaciones correspondientes.

6. Novel scorpion detection system combining computer vision and fluorescence

Abstract

In this work, a fully automatic and real-time system for the detection of scorpions was developed using computer vision and deep learning techniques. This system is based on the implementation of a double validation process using the shape features and the fluorescent characteristics of scorpions when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. The Haar Cascade Classifier (HCC) and YOLO (You Only Look Once) models have been used and compared as the first mechanism for the scorpion shape detection. The detection of the fluorescence emitted by the scorpions under UV light has been used as a second detection mechanism in order to increase the accuracy and precision of the system. The results obtained show that the system can accurately and reliably detect the presence of scorpions. In addition, values obtained of recall of 100% is essential with the purpose of providing a health security tool. Although the developed system can only be used at night or in dark environment, where the fluorescence emitted by the scorpions can be visualized, the nocturnal activity of scorpions justifies the incorporation of this second validation mechanism.

Abstract

In this paper, two novel automatic and real-time systems for the detection and classification of two genera of scorpions found in La Plata city (Argentina) were developed using computer vision and deep learning techniques. The object detection technique was implemented with two different methods, YOLO (You Only Look Once) and MobileNet, based on the shape features of the scorpions. High accuracy values of 88% and 91%, and high recall values of 90% and 97%, have been achieved for both models, respectively, which guarantees that they can successfully detect scorpions. In addition, the MobileNet method has been shown to have excellent performance to detect scorpions within an uncontrolled environment and to perform multiple detections. The MobileNet model was also used for image classification in order to successfully distinguish between dangerous scorpion (Tityus) and non-dangerous scorpion (Bothriurus) with the purpose of providing a health security tool. Applications for smartphones were developed, with the advantage of the portability of the systems, which can be used as a help tool for emergency services, or for biological research purposes. The developed systems can be easily scalable to other genera and species of scorpions to extend the region where these applications can be used.

This qualitative case study explored in-depth, how teachers interpret and use data within five English secondary schools. Data was collected via interviews, school documents and questionnaires. Qualitative data was coded into themes in 'NVivo' program in line with the research questions and the conceptual framework of the study. Questionnaire data was analysed descriptively in SPSS program and triangulated with qualitative data for confirmability. For internal and external validity, tables of specific case and cross-case analyses were constructed. The results show four new findings. That is, (1) pastoral data is not a stand-alone data (2) schools do not partner with each other around data use (3) state schools are more constrained in data use than the independent school and (4) data collection and access are hierarchical. Other findings are that English schools collect large amounts of data with most pupil-related data being quantitative to allow ranking and comparison of students' academic and non-academic performance. Teachers also seem to be shifting focus from teaching to data collection and that data collection serves as a form of surveillance where teachers use data to set targets for pupils, monitor and report academic progress to school leaders and parents. Also, there is superficiality in data collection, interpretation and use. For example, teachers use data to determine which pupils should have certain resources as interventions, but the study did not find compelling evidence that teachers use data to improve their teaching methods or to evaluate what they do. Finally, data use in the schools spread through hierarchies from the government to school leaders, middle leaders and class teachers then all the way up again with teachers responding positively and negatively to data use. In terms of support, schools mostly support access and internal collaboration around data. Performativity, as discussed for example by Stephen Ball, has been used to interpret these findings.

Abstract

The tobacco epidemic has been one of the biggest public health threats, and smoking is one of the world’s largest preventable causes of premature death. An estimated 15.4% of all deaths in the world are attributable to tobacco smoking. The present review aims to describe addiction to tobacco smoking and vaping. Tobacco and vaping devices contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug, which explains why smoking is so prevalent and persistent. Electronic cigarettes are a group of novel nicotine or tobacco products that have rapidly gained popularity in recent years. Electronic cigarette devices allow for the use of other drugs, including THC, while the lax regulation may allow for the introduction of toxic compounds that can lead to acute or subacute toxicity, such as the e-cigarette- or vaping-associated lung injury that has been linked to vitamin E acetate. In addition, regular vapers and heated tobacco devices emit toxins, although at lower concentrations than burned tobacco. However, more and more side effects have been identified. No new effective treatment for nicotine addiction has been developed recently, despite its huge adverse impact on overall health and other outcomes. As for the primary line of medications, the last one started in 2006, the varenicline, demonstrating a low interest in developing new medications against smoking, an unacceptable state of affairs, given the huge impact of smoking on morbidity and mortality.

Objetivou-se analisar a percepção de docentes sobre as atividades não presenciais (ANP), realizadas durante o distanciamento social causado pela pandemia da COVID-19, no Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina (IFSC), que optou por ANP e o Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS), que suspendeu suas atividades formais durante o período inicial da pandemia. Aplicou-se um formulário on-line e foram analisadas as respostas de 283 docentes. Apesar das decisões institucionais distintas, não se notou respostas muito diferentes dos docentes de ambas as instituições em relação à maioria das questões. A maioria dos docentes manifestou ser favorável às ANPs e buscou se capacitar para melhor enfrentar a nova situação. Os docentes buscaram formas sólidas de se capacitarem didática e pedagogicamente para a aplicação de um ensino não presencial, bem como de se comunicarem de forma efetiva com seus discentes. Conclui-se que o aprendizado com as ANPs fornecerá uma base sólida para um novo tipo de interação docente/discente, potencializando o uso de tecnologias emergentes na aplicação de atividades e estendendo a comunicação por meio das mídias a aplicativos sociais disponíveis. Abstract

Deep-learning-based image classification and object detection has been applied successfully to tree monitoring. However, studies of tree crowns and fallen trees, especially on flood inundated areas, remain largely unexplored. Detection of degraded tree trunks on natural environments such as water, mudflats, and natural vegetated areas is challenging due to the mixed colour image backgrounds. In this paper, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, with embedded RGB cameras were used to capture the fallen Acacia Xanthophloea trees from six designated plots around Lake Nakuru, Kenya. Motivated by the need to detect fallen trees around the lake, two well-established deep neural networks, i.e. Faster Region-based Convolution Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) and Retina-Net were used for fallen tree detection. A total of 7,590 annotations of three classes on 256×256 image patches were used for this study. Experimental results show the relevance of deep learning in this context, with Retina-Net model achieving 38.9% precision and 57.9% recall.

Abstract

The possibility of using the same genotyping technology (TaqMan) for all the genetic tests included in the new Spanish pharmacogenomics portfolio should enable the application of a multigenotyping platform to obtain a whole pharmacogenomics profile. However, HLA-typing is usually performed with other technologies and needs to be adapted to TaqMan assays. Our aim was to establish a set of TaqMan assays for correct typing of HLA-A*31:01, HLA-B*15:02, HLA-B*57:01, and HLA-B*58:01. Therefore, we searched for and selected SNVs described in different populations as surrogate markers for these HLA alleles, designed TaqMan assays, and tested in a set of samples with known HLA-A and HLA-B. HLA-A*31:01 was correctly typed with a combination of rs1061235 and rs17179220 (PPV 100%, 95% CI 84.6–100-%; NPV 100%, 95% CI 96.5–100.0%), HLA-B*15:02 with rs10484555 (PPV 100%, 95% CI 69.2–100.0%; NPV 100%, 95% CI 96.8–100.0%) and rs144012689 (PPV 100%, 95% CI 69.2–100.0%; NPV 100%, 95% CI 96.8–100.0%), and HLA-B*57:01 with rs2395029 (PPV 99.5%, 95% CI 72.9–99.3%; NPV 99.5%, 95% CI 98.3–100.0%). HLA-B*58:01 was typed using two allele-specific TaqMan probes mixed with a ß-Globin reference and treated as a genotyping assay (PPV 100.0%, 95% CI 81.5–100.0%; NPV 100%, 95% CI 96.8–100.0%). Abstract

In this work, we show that non-superabsorbent, thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel particles (< 250 μm) can reduce autogenous shrinkage in cement paste and improve early-age stiffening that can be caused by traditional superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). Swelling measurements in DI water and cement filtrate solution suggest that SAP-induced early-age stiffening is caused by its super-absorbency in low-ionic solutions – a behavior not exhibited by non-superabsorbent PNIPAM. Addition of PNIPAM resulted in a 29% and 60% reduction in autogenous shrinkage strain at 14 days when used alone (0.3 wt% PNIPAM) and in combination with SAP (0.15% PNIPAM, 0.15% SAP), respectively, compared to a Control with no polymer addition. Furthermore, an addition of 0.3 wt.% PNIPAM exhibited a ∼29% and ∼37% decrease in static yield stress compared to a Control and 0.3 wt% SAP-modified cement pastes, respectively. Taken together, the results provide initial evidence to suggest that the use of hydrogels as internal curing agents may not necessarily require super-absorbency to reduce autogenous shrinkage. Non-superabsorbent hydrogels, like PNIPAM, may help reduce autogenous shrinkage while alleviating the effects of SAP-induced early-age stiffening.

Para esto, se analizó la literatura, se sintetizaron los resultados de proyectos de investigación interdisciplinarios y se desarrolló un software experimental. La hipótesis es que al artista investigador le conviene aceptar el reto de las ciencias, actualizar sus procesos y abandonar el romanticismo latente en el arte y sus instituciones. Como sugiere la producción artística y tecnológica de la investigación, esto es posible de acuerdo con la teoría de los programas de investigación de Lakatos, mediante la selección de los elementos interdisciplinarios, la recuperación de los valores formales y el aprovechamiento de las dimensiones mediáticas, estéticas y epistemológicas del software.

El objetivo fue caracterizar el crecimiento de aves Criollas Mexicanas (CMX), Hy-Line Brown (HLB) y Rhode Island Red (RIR) mediante los modelos Gompertz-Laird (MNGL), Logístico (MNL), Richards (MNR) y Von Bertalanffy (MNVB). Se utilizaron 70 pollitas de cada genotipo. Cada ave fue identificada para registrar su peso de 7 a 210 d de edad. Los parámetros de los modelos se estimaron con el procedimiento NLIN (algoritmo de Marquardt) de SAS. Se calculó el coeficiente de determinación ajustado, criterio de información de Akaike y criterio de información Bayesiana, para cada caso. La tasa de crecimiento inicial (d−1) en aves CMX fue menor (0.047 15) que en aves RIR (0.071 69) y HLB (0.052 16). Con los cuatro modelos, la tasa de decaimiento en aves CMX fue menor, respecto a los otros genotipos. Asimismo, la edad al máximo crecimiento (d) en las aves CMX, RIR y HLB, varió de 49.4 a 87.9, de 60.7 a 81.6 y de 58.7 a 87.8, respectivamente. Por otro lado, el peso asintótico (g), estimado con los cuatro modelos varió de 2 068.5 a 2 644.3, de 1 902.4 a 2 250.9 y 2 096.3 a 2 464.5, en las aves CMX, RIR y HLB, respectivamente. Con el MNVB se obtuvo el mejor ajuste para los datos de las aves RIR y HLB, en contraste, el MNR fue mejor para las aves CMX, seguido del MNVB. El MNVB sería el más adecuado para el estudio simultáneo del crecimiento de aves CMX, RIR y HLB.

Abstract

Automated mapping of heterogeneous riparian landscape is of high interest to assess our planet. Still, it remains a challenging task due to the occurrence of flooded vegetation. While both optical and radar images can be exploited, the latter has the advantage of being independent acquisition conditions. However, and despite their popularity, the threshold-based approaches commonly used present some drawbacks such as not taking into account the spatial context and providing mixed pixels within class boundaries. In this study, we propose a novel methodology to avoid such issues by using an object-based image analysis approach on polarimetric radar data. We use our workflow to map the degrading Acacia x. species along lake Nakuru Riparian reserve, and obtain highly-accurate results.

Abstract

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive hydro plant that invaded the waters of Lake Victoria and has since been spreading rapidly affecting the socio-economic livelihood of the community around the Lake. The weed's rapid spread is due to various anthropogenic activities in the surrounding environment among them being the eutrophication of the lake waters.This study aims at using remote sensing applications and presenting the results of the analysis of the water hyacinth Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), water extent, and analysis of correlation with the water quality over time from Sentinel 2 satellite imagery in January 2017 to January of 2021. The analysis aims at understanding the vegetation growth coverage in the five years and sets the basis of monthly predictive modelling of the behavior of water hyacinth. Predictive modelling applies historical statistical data while trying to use trend analysis in predicting the future behavior of a phenomenon. This study also seeks to answer the research question of the role of suspended sediments and dissolved minerals in abating the spread of and growth of water hyacinth.

Abstract

Background The sensitivity and specificity of the leukocyte esterase test are relatively low for a screening test for urinary tract infection (UTI). More accurate tests could reduce both overtreatment and missed cases. This study aimed to determine whether neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) can replace leukocyte esterase in the diagnosis of UTI and/or whether NGAL accurately identifies children with acute pyelonephritis. Methods Data sources-MEDLINE and EMBASE. We only considered published studies that evaluated the results of an index test (NGAL) against the results of urine culture (for UTI) or against the results of dimercaptosuccinic acid (for acute pyelonephritis) in children aged 0 to 18 years. Two authors independently applied the selection criteria to all citations and independently extracted the data. Results A total of 12 studies met our inclusion criteria. Four studies (920 children) included data on NGAL for UTI; eight studies (580 children) included data on NGAL for pyelonephritis. We did not pool accuracy values because the included studies used different cutoff values. For the diagnosis of UTI, urinary NGAL appeared to have better accuracy than the leukocyte esterase test in all included studies. For the diagnosis of pyelonephritis, neither plasma NGAL nor urinary NGAL had high sensitivity and/or specificity. The number of studies was the main limitation of this systematic review. Conclusions Urinary NGAL appears promising for the diagnosis of UTI; however, larger studies are needed to validate this marker as a replacement for leukocyte esterase. Abstract

Objective. To describe the possible risks associated to smoking in the spread and complications of Covid-19, em­phasizing in the benefits of quitting smoking. Materials and methods. The narrative review methodology and the established process for Cochrane rapid reviews were used. Results. The scientific evidence related to smoking and Covid-19 remains limited. However, there is an already documented trend in cross-sectional, clinical studies and meta-analyses on the increased risk of adverse outcomes with Covid-19 associated with tobacco use. Conclusions. It is necessary to issue a warning that persons who smoke would have greater risks in the Covid-19 pandemic, which add to the many already known risks of tobacco use. Thus, quitting smoking becomes a relevant preventive measure to better confront SARS-CoV-2.
