This post hoc analysis from the Phase 3b SUPREME study explored gender-related differences in patient characteristics and efficacy of secukinumab 300 mg on Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 75/90/100 and impact on QoL using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis through week 24.Patients and Methods: The proportion of patients achieving PASI 75/90/100 was computed using a nonresponder imputation approach. Differences between cohorts were analyzed using a logistic regression model. The mean change from baseline in DLQI was computed using the Wilcoxon test.Results: Among the 433 patients (males: 71.6%), females had a higher DLQI than males at baseline (13.1 vs 9.5; P< 0.0001). Males had a slightly higher response for PASI 90 than females at week 16 (80.7% vs 78.1%; P=0.0779) and 24 (83.2% vs 79.7%; P=0.0319). No differences were observed between genders in PASI 100/75 responses at week 24. Both genders showed an improvement in DLQI with secukinumab at week 24 (− 10.9 vs − 8.1, respectively, in females vs males; P=0.0004).Conclusion: In summary, secukinumab was effective in the treatment of psoriasis, irrespective of gender.Keywords: plaque psoriasis, PASI, patient-reported outcomes, Dermatology Quality of Life Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

2. Testing Human-Hand Segmentation on In-Distribution and Out-of-Distribution Data in Human-Robot Interactions Using a Deep Ensemble Model

Abstract

Reliable detection and segmentation of human hands are critical for enhancing safety and facilitating advanced interactions in human-robot collaboration. Current research predominantly evaluates hand segmentation under in-distribution (ID) data, which reflects the training data of deep learning (DL) models. However, this approach fails to address out-of-distribution (OOD) scenarios that often arise in real-world human-robot interactions. In this study, we present a novel approach by evaluating the performance of pre-trained DL models under both ID data and more challenging OOD scenarios. To mimic realistic industrial scenarios, we designed a diverse dataset featuring simple and cluttered backgrounds with industrial tools, varying numbers of hands (0 to 4), and hands with and without gloves. For OOD scenarios, we incorporated unique and rare conditions such as finger-crossing gestures and motion blur from fast-moving hands, addressing both epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties. To ensure multiple point of views (PoVs), we utilized both egocentric cameras, mounted on the operator's head, and static cameras to capture RGB images of human-robot interactions. This approach allowed us to account for multiple camera perspectives while also evaluating the performance of models trained on existing egocentric datasets as well as static-camera datasets. For segmentation, we used a deep ensemble model composed of UNet and RefineNet as base learners. Performance evaluation was conducted using segmentation metrics and uncertainty quantification via predictive entropy. Results revealed that models trained on industrial datasets outperformed those trained on non-industrial datasets, highlighting the importance of context-specific training. Although all models struggled with OOD scenarios, those trained on industrial datasets demonstrated significantly better generalization.

3. Evaluating deep learning models for fault diagnosis of a rotating machinery with epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty

Abstract

Uncertainty-aware deep learning (DL) models recently gained attention in fault diagnosis as a way to promote the reliable detection of faults when out-of-distribution (OOD) data arise from unseen faults (epistemic uncertainty) or the presence of noise (aleatoric uncertainty). In this paper, we present the first comprehensive comparative study of state-of-the-art uncertainty-aware DL architectures for fault diagnosis in rotating machinery, where different scenarios affected by epistemic uncertainty and different types of aleatoric uncertainty are investigated. The selected architectures include sampling by dropout, Bayesian neural networks, and deep ensembles. Moreover, to distinguish between in-distribution and OOD data in the different scenarios two uncertainty thresholds, one of which is introduced in this paper, are alternatively applied. Our empirical findings offer guidance to practitioners and researchers who have to deploy real-world uncertainty-aware fault diagnosis systems. In particular, they reveal that, in the presence of epistemic uncertainty, all DL models are capable of effectively detecting, on average, a substantial portion of OOD data across all the scenarios. However, deep ensemble models show superior performance, independently of the uncertainty threshold used for discrimination. In the presence of aleatoric uncertainty, the noise level plays an important role. Specifically, low noise levels hinder the models' ability to effectively detect OOD data. Even in this case, however, deep ensemble models exhibit a milder degradation in performance, dominating the others. These achievements, combined with their shorter inference time, make deep ensemble architectures the preferred choice.

Abstract

Modern Machine Learning (ML) has significantly advanced various research fields, but the opaque nature of ML models hinders their adoption in several domains. Explainable AI (XAI) addresses this challenge by providing additional information to help users understand the internal decision-making process of ML models. In the field of neuroscience, enriching a ML model for brain decoding with attribution-based XAI techniques means being able to highlight which brain areas correlate with the task at hand, thus offering valuable insights to domain experts. In this paper, we analyze human and Computer Vision (CV) systems in parallel, training and explaining two ML models based respectively on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and movie frames. We do so by leveraging the "StudyForrest" dataset, which includes functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans of subjects watching the "Forrest Gump" movie, emotion annotations, and eye-tracking data. For human vision the ML task is to link fMRI data with emotional annotations, and the explanations highlight the brain regions strongly correlated with the label. On the other hand, for computer vision, the input data is movie frames, and the explanations are pixel-level heatmaps. We cross-analyzed our results, linking human attention (obtained through eye-tracking) with XAI saliency on CV models and brain region activations. 9. Glucose abnormalities in Asian patients with chronic hepatitis C

We compared the prevalence of glucose abnormalities (impaired fasting glucose [IFG] and T2D) and their risk factors between Asian and non-Asian chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients, and evaluated whether glucose abnormalities impacted the viral responses to peginterferon plus ribavirin treatment (current standard of care in most Asian countries). This study retrospectively analyzed data of 1,887 CHC patients from three Phase II/III studies with alisporivir (DEB025) as treatment for CHC. The chi-square test was used to compare the prevalence of IFG/T2D between Asian and non-Asian CHC patients, and logistic regression was used to adjust for sex, age, and cirrhosis status. Risk factors for IFG/T2D were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analysis. Our results indicated that the prevalence of IFG/T2D was high in both Asian and non-Asian CHC patients (23.0% vs 20.9%), and no significant difference was found between these two populations (adjusted odds ratio: 1.3, 95% confidence interval: 0.97, 1.7; P=0.08). Age, sex, and cirrhosis status were risk factors for IFG/T2D in both populations, while body mass index was positively associated with IFG/T2D in non-Asian but not in Asian participants. No significant differences in sustained virological response rates were seen between patients with normal fasting glucose and patients with IFG/T2D for both populations. These results demonstrate that the prevalence of glucose abnormalities in Asian CHC patients was similar to that in non-Asians, and glucose abnormalities had no impact on viral response to peginterferon plus ribavirin. The designation of type material is a crucial step in taxonomy. It enables the establishment of a strong morphological reference for plant species description and identification. In the current work, we investigated the MUSE-preserved collections to trace back the original study material employed by Francesco Facchini to describe Sempervivum dolomiticum Facchini. This chasmophyte is an Italian endemic occurring in the eastern Dolomites. A lectotype and an isotype have been designated.

12. Characterisation of the myeloid CSF1R+ dendritic cell subsets and monocytes in health and disease

Abstract

Dendritic cells (DCs) and monocytes are innate immune cells involved in recognising pathogens or damage-associated molecules, triggering adaptive immune responses, and maintaining homeostatic conditions. DCs and monocytes are collectively referred to as Mononuclear Phagocyte System (MPS) cells, and their origin and development in humans still need elucidating. Lineage-determining cytokine receptors (LDCRs) are growth factors with a pivotal role in haematopoietic cell differentiation and survival. These receptors are retained on mature cell surface, suggesting an active role after differentiation. Here, the link between DCs and monocytes at a developmental level was assessed at steady state using CSF1R, aLDCR previously known as expressed only on macrophages, but now proved to be on all cells of the MPS. The MPS was further studied across multiple diseases, to assess its development or effector state. DCs and monocytes were assessed in two distinct anti-malarial vaccine challenges. Both vaccines targeted the same blood-stage Plasmodium falciparum antigen apical membrane protein 1 (AMA1),involved in erythrocyte invasion by malaria. One vaccine formulation was based on a prime-boost viral delivery of the antigen, while the other vaccine consisted of the recombinant protein administered with a liposome-based adjuvant system. The MPS was greatly affected and reshaped, with cell fluctuations in percentages depending on the vaccine formulation. The viral-vectored vaccine also seemed to activate cells more effectively compared to the protein vaccine. LDCR and surface marker expression in CSF1R+ cells was also affected by the different vaccine vector components. DCs also play a role in infectious diseases. In the global pandemic of COVID-19,understanding how the MPS is modulated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus was crucial, especially for elderly people and individuals with underlying conditions. Two South African COVID patients' cohorts were investigated, where HIV and Tb coinfections, steroid treatment,and other comorbidities where present. There was a direct variant-dependent impact of COVID-19 on the MPS. In COVID-19 patients,there was a decrease in circulating CSF1R+ MPS cells, enhanced by the presence of certain comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes. Aside from underlying conditions, one of the causes of poor prognosis is a phenomenon called cytokine storm and it is linked to the MPS cells. The elevated levels of circulating cytokines released by the MPS cells interact with the complement and coagulation systems to induce coagulation, respiratory and multi-organ failure. Therefore, DCs and monocyte ability to activate their NLRP3 inflammasome and release pro-inflammatory cytokines was investigated. The CD14+monocytic compartment and DCs were able to respond to NLRP3 activating stimuli by releasing interleukin 1 β and undergoing cell death, signs of activation of an inflammasome pathway. Finally, the role of DCs and monocytes was investigated in the context of another pathological setting, with the comparison of two different types of tumours that usually display different immune infiltrated. The first tumour, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), is conventionally referred toas "hot" or immune infiltrated tumour, while the second, colorectal cancer (CRC), as "cold" or immune excluded. The comparison between these two tumours was pursuit using public single-cell RNA sequencing datasets. Different expression of CSF1R and CSF2R were noted across tumoral tissues, and a specific type of DCs recently discovered and poorly characterised at functional level displayed opposite behaviour, accumulating in LUAD but not in CRC. For this DC subset, a putative tolerogenic role was proposed that would need tobe validated with functional studies. This work underlined the importance of investigating the involvement of CSF1R+ MPS cells in health and diseases and provided a pan-MPS marker for human studies.

15. Fault Detection and Diagnosis with Imbalanced and Noisy Data: A Hybrid Framework for Rotating Machinery

Abstract

Fault diagnosis plays an essential role in reducing the maintenance costs of rotating machinery manufacturing systems. In many real applications of fault detection and diagnosis, data tend to be imbalanced, meaning that the number of samples for some fault classes is much less than the normal data samples. At the same time, in an industrial condition, accelerometers encounter high levels of disruptive signals and the collected samples turn out to be heavily noisy. As a consequence, many traditional Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) frameworks get poor classification performances when dealing with real-world circumstances. Three main solutions have been proposed in the literature to cope with this problem: (1) the implementation of generative algorithms to increase the amount of under-represented input samples, (2) the employment of a classifier being powerful to learn from imbalanced and noisy data, (3) the development of an efficient data pre-processing including feature extraction and data augmentation. This paper proposes a hybrid framework which uses the three aforementioned components to achieve an effective signal-based FDD system for imbalanced conditions. Specifically, it first extracts the fault features, using Fourier and wavelet transforms to make full use of the signals. Then, it employs Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGAN) to generate synthetic samples to populate the rare fault class and enhance the training set. Moreover, to achieve a higher performance a novel combination of Convolutional Long Short-term Memory (CLSTM) and Weighted Extreme Learning Machine (WELM) is proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the developed framework, different datasets settings on different imbalance severities and noise degrees were used. Abstract

Summary: Addressing the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) and macrophage M1/M2 activation is important in diagnosing hematological disorders and inflammatory pathologies and designing therapeutic tools. CSF1R is a reliable marker to identify all circulating MPS cells and tissue macrophages in humans using a single surface protein. CSF1R permits the quantification and isolation of monocyte and dendritic cell (DC) subsets in conjunction with CD14, CD16, and CD1c and is stable across the lifespan and sexes in the absence of overt pathology. Beyond cell detection, measuring M1/M2 activation in humans poses challenges due to response heterogeneity, transient signaling, and multiple regulation steps for transcripts and proteins. MPS cells respond in a conserved manner to M1/M2 pathways such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), steroids, interferon-γ (IFNγ), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), for which we propose an ad hoc modular gene expression tool. Signature analysis highlights macrophage activation mosaicism in experimental samples, an emerging concept that points to mixed macrophage activation states in pathology.

In our epoch, images are a powerful way to convey a message to a large audience. Through the use of amazing astronomical photographs, science can be communicated effectively at different levels, to a very diverse audience of all ages. In fact, astrophotography combines aesthetic appeal with the illustration of the science behind astronomical phenomena. This is the aim of the exhibit "A che Punto \`e la NOTTE - A scientific exhibition of astrophotography" organized by us in Italy, in October 2020, with the partnership of the cultural association PhysicalPub. Many different authors, both single individuals and professional or amateur observatories, were asked to send their best pictures. The 54 astronomical images chosen by a scientific committee, categorised in three different topics (night landscape, deep sky, instrumentation), were seen by more than 2000 visitors and 11 school groups (despite the difficult period due to the COVID pandemic). A free audio-guide, available on-line through a web-application developed on purpose, delivered scientific explanations of images for self-guided tours. Conferences and guided tours were also organized. The highlight of the exhibit were four mirrors from the MAGIC telescope and an ASTRI scale-model that allowed an in-depth description of how an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) works, introducing the science of VHE cosmic radiation. We will summarize the main difficulties in organizing this event and the feedback we had from the visitors. Abstract

A current trend in industries such as semiconductors and foundry is to shift their visual inspection processes to Automatic Visual Inspection (AVI) systems, to reduce their costs, mistakes, and dependency on human experts. This paper proposes a two-staged fault diagnosis framework for AVI systems. In the first stage, a generation model is designed to synthesize new samples based on real samples. The proposed augmentation algorithm extracts objects from the real samples and blends them randomly, to generate new samples and enhance the performance of the image processor. In the second stage, an improved deep learning architecture based on Faster R-CNN, Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), and a Residual Network is proposed to perform object detection on the enhanced dataset. The performance of the algorithm is validated and evaluated on two multi-class datasets. 22. ELECTRAMed: a new pre-trained language representation model for biomedical NLP

Abstract

The overwhelming amount of biomedical scientific texts calls for the development of effective language models able to tackle a wide range of biomedical natural language processing (NLP) tasks. The most recent dominant approaches are domain-specific models, initialized with general-domain textual data and then trained on a variety of scientific corpora. However, it has been observed that for specialized domains in which large corpora exist, training a model from scratch with just in-domain knowledge may yield better results. Moreover, the increasing focus on the compute costs for pre-training recently led to the design of more efficient architectures, such as ELECTRA. In this paper, we propose a pre-trained domain-specific language model, called ELECTRAMed, suited for the biomedical field. The novel approach inherits the learning framework of the general-domain ELECTRA architecture, as well as its computational advantages. Experiments performed on benchmark datasets for several biomedical NLP tasks support the usefulness of ELECTRAMed, which sets the novel state-of-the-art result on the BC5CDR corpus for named entity recognition, and provides the best outcome in 2 over the 5 runs of the 7th BioASQ-factoid Challange for the question answering task.

Abstract

Hieracium is one of the largest flowering plant genera that has recently experienced a rapid evolutionary radiation. Due to the massive morphological variation among species, frequent hybridization, and polyploidization events, combined with apomictic reproduction in polyploids, the concept of species in Hieracium is widely debated, and species identification is incredibly challenging. Taxonomic investigation can lead to changes in conservation status or, in some cases, to de-extinctions of species. Taxa with doubtful classification are particularly sensitive to this kind of problem. Hieracium tolstoii was a narrow Italian endemic species that is nowadays considered extinct. Described as a morphological intermediate form between two other species, no further investigations were conducted after its first description. To clarify H. tolstoii’s origin and ensure the validity of its current conservation status, we conducted a taxonomic investigation on herbaria specimens of the early XX century. Specimens were studied using a morphometric analysis that compared H. tolstoii with other closely related taxa. Moreover, we performed phylogenetic investigations using three plastid intergenic spacers to evaluate the relationship between species. Plastid markers revealed the presence of indels and SNPs in H. tolstoii sequences that differ from sequences of the supposed parental species. Morphometry revealed differences among species that led us to confirm the validity of H. tolstoii as an independent apomictic species and, therefore, unfortunately, its extinction.

Abstract

Interaction between social robots and children occurs today in a variety of environments, including schools, hospitals, and homes. This review aims to highlight studies that delve into this interaction in the educational settings, exploring the characteristics of the social robot NAO and how its features influence its relationship with children. A search was conducted on July 1st, 2023 in Scopus and PsychInfo. Inclusion criteria pertained to (1) typical development; (2) age range 4-12 years; (3) educational setting; (4) type of robot (NAO); (5) type of publication: peer-reviewed journal; (6) language: English; (7) research studies. Of the 116 results that emerged from the search, 92 were excluded, yielding 24 valid results. We classified the records into two categories, namely 17 results were included in the “NAO as an informational and educational tool” category and 7 in the “NAO as a relational agent” category. The first category considers all studies where social robots were used as tools for educational and informational support; these studies delve into topics related to the teaching of school subjects and personalized learning, with a specific focus on emotional education. In the second category, we encounter studies that explore the relationships between children and robots, with a primary emphasis on the phenomenon of anthropomorphism, the attribution of mental states, touch interaction, and the robot's caregiving abilities. 26. CoV-ABM: A stochastic discrete-event agent-based framework to simulate spatiotemporal dynamics of COVID-19

Abstract

The paper develops a stochastic Agent-Based Model (ABM) mimicking the spread of infectious diseases in geographical domains. The model is designed to simulate the spatiotemporal spread of SARS-CoV2 disease, known as COVID-19. Our SARS-CoV2-based ABM framework (CoV-ABM) simulates the spread at any geographical scale, ranging from a village to a country and considers unique characteristics of SARS-CoV2 viruses such as its persistence in the environment. Therefore, unlike other simulators, CoV-ABM computes the density of active viruses inside each location space to get the virus transmission probability for each agent. It also uses the local census and health data to create health and risk factor profiles for each individual. The proposed model relies on a flexible timestamp scale to optimize the computational speed and the level of detail. In our framework each agent represents a person interacting with the surrounding space and other adjacent agents inside the same space. Moreover, families stochastic daily tasks are formulated to get tracked by the corresponding family members. The model also formulates the possibility of meetings for each subset of friendships and relatives. The main aim of the proposed framework is threefold: to illustrate the dynamics of SARS-CoV diseases, to identify places which have a higher probability to become infection hubs and to provide a decision-support system to design efficient interventions in order to fight against pandemics. The framework employs SEIHRD dynamics of viral diseases with different intervention scenarios. The paper simulates the spread of COVID-19 in the State of Delaware, United States, with near one million stochastic agents. The results achieved over a period of 15 weeks with a timestamp of 1 hour show which places become the hubs of infection. Abstract

Conservation translocations are becoming common conservation practice, so there is an increasing need to understand the drivers of plant translocation performance through reviews of cases at global and regional levels. The establishment of the Italian Database of Plant Translocation (IDPlanT) provides the opportunity to review the techniques used in 186 plant translocation cases performed in the last 50 years in the heart of the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot. We described techniques and information available in IDPlanT and used these data to identify drivers of translocation outcomes. We tested the effect of 15 variables on survival of translocated propagules as of the last monitoring date with binomial logistic mixed-effect models. Eleven variables significantly affected survival of transplants: life form, site protection, material source, number of source populations, propagation methods, propagule life stage, planting methods, habitat suitability assessment, site preparation, aftercare, and costs. The integration of vegetation studies in the selection of suitable planting sites significantly increased the success of translocation efforts. Although posttranslocation watering had a generally positive effect on translocation outcome, other aftercare techniques did not always increase transplant survival. Finally, we found that how funds were spent appeared to be more important than the actual amount spent. Plant translocations in Italy and in the Mediterranean area should account for the complexity of speciation, gene flow, and plant migrations that has led to local adaptations and has important implications for the choice and constitution of source material.

Abstract

Il volume raccoglie alcuni contributi di ricercatori universitari e professionisti del mondo pedagogico intervenuti al 3° Colloquio Internazionale in Scienze dell’educazione e della formazione Imaginaire adolescent, Adolescents imaginaires/Immaginario adolescente, Adolescenti immaginari tenutosi il 24 e 25 Maggio 2022 presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. I saggi affrontano il tema dell’immaginario tra psicoanalisi e pedagogia in relazione all’adolescenza e agli adolescenti reali. Più che incantarsi allo specchio, le ragazze e i ragazzi di oggi sono ingaggiati da schermi: chattano, postano. Data questa esperienza diffusa, è l’adolescente contemporaneo implicato ancora nella categoria di futuro? Riesce davvero a sognare? Oppure preferisce restare al di qua sia della ribellione di chi lo ha preceduto, sia del conformismo della maggioranza? L’adolescenza non è più, forse, un’età di passaggio ma certo gli adolescenti non smettono di confrontarsi con la pubertà. Oltre l’ingiunzione sociale all’auto-determinazione, che cosa significa diventare adulti oggi? In un contesto segnato da crisi pandemiche, ecologiche, economiche e anche socioeducative, lo sguardo della società si concentra regolarmente sul disagio degli adolescenti con preoccupazione. Come aprire prospettive di riflessione fruttuose senza assecondare un discorso appiattito sul pessimismo? Il proposito dei curatori è quello di tematizzare la questione dell’immaginario degli adolescenti, ma anche il posto che gli adolescenti hanno nel nostro immaginario. Donald Winnicott invitava a fare un primo passo indietro considerando l’adolescenza un barometro sociale. Pertanto, mentre ci preoccupiamo degli adolescenti, siamo incoraggiati a riflettere sulle nostre modalità operative d’intervento e a mettere in discussione il posto che assegniamo loro. Chi è l’adolescente per gli adulti? Quali speranze e quali paure suscita? Quale, invece, è il discorso dei professionisti sugli adolescenti?

Abstract

SETBP1 mutations are found in various clonal myeloid disorders. However, it is unclear whether they can initiate leukemia, because SETBP1 mutations typically appear as later events during oncogenesis. To answer this question, we generated a mouse model expressing mutated SETBP1 in hematopoietic tissue: this model showed profound alterations in the differentiation program of hematopoietic progenitors and developed a myeloid neoplasm with megakaryocytic dysplasia, splenomegaly, and bone marrow fibrosis, prompting us to investigate SETBP1 mutations in a cohort of 36 triple-negative primary myelofibrosis (TN-PMF) cases. We identified 2 distinct subgroups, one carrying SETBP1 mutations and the other completely devoid of somatic variants. Clinically, a striking difference in disease aggressiveness was noted, with patients with SETBP1 mutation showing a much worse clinical course. In contrast to myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms, in which SETBP1 mutations are mostly found as a late clonal event, single-cell clonal hierarchy reconstruction in 3 patients with TN-PMF from our cohort revealed SETBP1 to be a very early event, suggesting that the phenotype of the different SETBP1+ disorders may be shaped by the opposite hierarchy of the same clonal SETBP1 variants.

48. Pulmonary Artery Pseudoaneurysm Due to Pulmonary Artery Catheter Placement: A New Minimally Invasive Approach to Solve a Life-threatening Complication.

Abstract

This article discusses a pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) formation following pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) placement for cardiac surgery. The patient, an 82-year-old female with a history of hypertension and chronic heart failure, underwent elective mitral and tricuspid valve surgery. After surgery, bleeding was observed in the endotracheal tube, indicating a potential complication. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed bleeding mainly in the right bronchus. Subsequent computed tomography pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) confirmed the presence of a small pseudoaneurysm in a branch of the pulmonary artery. Prompt collaboration between anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, and interventional radiologists led to the successful embolization of the pseudoaneurysm with a minimally invasive approach by using the PAC as a guide catheter to reach the PAP. The article outlines the potential causes of PAP formation, clinical presentation, and management strategies. While conservative, surgical, and interventional approaches are discussed, the preferred treatment is coil embolization due to its effectiveness and minimal invasiveness. The authors emphasize the importance of rapid diagnosis, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the feasibility of using the pulmonary artery route for embolization to rapidly reach the lesion to stabilize. Abstract

Research on peat-free substrates is increasing due to the environmental concerns associated with peat extraction and with the aim of promoting sustainable horticultural practices. Previous research has shown that green compost mixed with coconut coir dust and stabilized wood fiber can be a valuable peat-free alternative for growing media. This study extends this knowledge by exploring the possibility of reducing fertilization levels by exploiting the nutrient content of green compost. In this paper we tested two ornamental herbaceous perennial plants, Leucanthemum vulgare Lam. and Dianthus barbatus L. For each species, we carried out five different substrate mixtures: 1) peat:pumice 70:30 v v−1; 2) coconut coir dust:pumice 70:30 v v−1; 3) coconut coir dust:green compost 55:45 v v−1; 4) green compost:stabilized wood fiber 60:40 v v−1; and 5) coconut coir dust:green compost:stabilized wood fiber 40:30:30 v v−1. For each mixture, we explored three different levels of fertilization: i) no fertilizer application; ii) low dosage of a controlled-release fertilizer at 2 g L−1; and iii) high dosage of the same controlled-release fertilizer at 4 g L−1. Plant biomass, biometric parameters, eco-physiological parameters, and plant mineral content were measured as performance indicators. The results showed that the nutrient surplus provided by the peat-free substrate, particularly when it contains green compost, can enhance the growth potential of the plants. Adding green compost to non-peat substrates can be an opportunity to optimize plant nutrition while reducing the presence of peat in plant nurseries and the use of chemical fertilizers.
