High-mass protostars (M$_{\star} >$ 8 M$_{\odot}$) are thought to gain the majority of their mass via short, intense bursts of growth. This episodic accretion is thought to be facilitated by gravitationally unstable and subsequently inhomogeneous accretion disks. Limitations of observational capabilities, paired with a lack of observed accretion burst events has withheld affirmative confirmation of the association between disk accretion, instability and the accretion burst phenomenon in high-mass protostars. Following its 2019 accretion burst, a heat-wave driven by a burst of radiation propagated outward from the high-mass protostar G358.93-0.03-MM1. Six VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) observations of the raditively pumped 6.7 GHz methanol maser were conducted during this period, tracing ever increasing disk radii as the heat-wave propagated outward. Concatenating the VLBI maps provided a sparsely sampled, milliarcsecond view of the spatio-kinematics of the accretion disk covering a physical range of $\sim$ 50 - 900 AU. We term this observational approach `heat-wave mapping'. We report the discovery of a Keplerian accretion disk with a spatially resolved four-arm spiral pattern around G358.93-0.03-MM1. This result positively implicates disk accretion and spiral arm instabilities into the episodic accretion high-mass star formation paradigm., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy in 2023

High-mass stars are thought to accumulate much of their mass via short, infrequent bursts of disk-aided accretion. Such accretion events are rare and difficult to observe directly but are known to drive enhanced maser emission. In this Letter we report high-resolution, multi-epoch methanol maser observations toward G358.93-0.03 which reveal an interesting phenomenon; the sub-luminal propagation of a thermal radiation "heat-wave" emanating from an accreting high-mass proto-star. The extreme transformation of the maser emission implies a sudden intensification of thermal infrared radiation from within the inner (40 mas, 270 au) region. Subsequently, methanol masers trace the radial passage of thermal radiation through the environment at $\geq$ 4-8\% the speed of light. Such a high translocation rate contrasts with the $\leq$ 10 km s$^{-1}$ physical gas motions of methanol masers typically observed using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The observed scenario can readily be attributed to an accretion event in the high-mass proto-star G358.93-0.03-MM1. While being the third case in its class, G358.93-0.03-MM1 exhibits unique attributes hinting at a possible `zoo' of accretion burst types. These results promote the advantages of maser observations in understanding high-mass star formation, both through single-dish maser monitoring campaigns and via their international cooperation as VLBI arrays., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy in 2020

We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H$_2$O masers associated with the water fountain source IRAS 18043$-$2116 found in the observations with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We have found new highest velocity components of the H$_2$O masers (at the red-shifted side $V_{\rm LSR}\simeq376~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$ and at the blue-shifted side $V_{\rm LSR}\simeq$ $-165~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$), and the resulting velocity spread of $\simeq 540~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$ breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources. The locations of those components have offsets from the axis joining the two major maser clusters, indicating a large opening angle of the outflow ($\sim60^{\circ}$). The evolution of the maser cluster separation of $\sim$2.9 mas yr$^{-1}$ and the compact ($\sim0.''2$) CO emission source mapped with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array suggest a very short ($\sim$30 yr) timescale of the outflow. We also confirmed the increase in the flux density of the 22 GHz continuum source. Recent studies have shown that 6.7 GHz methanol maser flares can be a powerful tool for verifying the mechanisms of maser production and even the specific signatures of accretion rate changes in the early stages of high-mass star formation. We characterize the spatial structure and evolution of methanol and water masers during a flare of methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz in the HMYSO G24.33$+$0.14. VLBA was used to image the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water vapor masers at three epochs guided by monitoring the methanol line with the Torun 32m telescope. The 6.7 GHz maser maps were also obtained with the EVN and LBA during the flare. WISE data were used to find correlations between the 6.7 GHz maser and IR fluxes. The 6.7 GHz methanol maser cloudlets are distributed over $\sim$3500 au, and the morphology of most of them is stable although their brightness varies following the course of the total flux density on a timescale of two months. The 12.2 GHz methanol maser cloudlets cover an area an order of magnitude smaller than that of 6.7 GHz emission, and both transitions emerge from the same masing gas. The 22.2 GHz maser cloudlets lie in the central region and show a systematic increase in brightness and moderate changes in size and orientation, together with the velocity drift of the strongest cloudlet during two months of the VLBI observing period. Time lag estimates imply the propagation of changes in the physical conditions of the masing region with a subluminal speed ($\sim$0.3c). A tight correlation of IR (4.6$\mu$m) and 6.7 GHz flux densities is found, supporting the radiative pumping model. Comparison with the 230 GHz ALMA data indicates that the methanol masers are distributed in the inner part of the rotating disk, whereas the 22.2 GHz emission traces the compact inner component of the bipolar outflow or a jet structure., Comment: Accepted by A\&A

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been observed as far as redshift z~7. They are crucial in investigating the early Universe as well as the growth of supermassive black holes at their centres. Radio-loud AGN with their jets seen at a small viewing angle are called blazars and show relativistic boosting of their emission. Thus, their apparently brighter jets are easier to detect in the high-redshift Universe. DES J014132.4-542749.9 is a radio-luminous but X-ray weak blazar candidate at z = 5. We conducted high-resolution radio interferometric observations of this source with the Australian Long Baseline Array at 1.7 and 8.5 GHz. A single, compact radio emitting feature was detected at both frequencies with a flat radio spectrum. We derived the milliarcsecond-level accurate position of the object. The frequency dependence of its brightness temperature is similar to that of blazar sources observed at lower redshifts. Based on our observations, we can confirm its blazar nature. We compared its radio properties with those of two other similarly X-ray-weak and radio-bright AGN, and found that they show very different relativistic boosting characteristics., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PASA

At BME (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) NTI (Institute of Nuclear Technics), a 7 pin rod bundle test section has been built in order to investigate the hydraulic behavior of the coolant in such design and to develop CFD models that could properly simulate the flow conditions in the ALLEGRO core. PIROUETTE (PIv ROd bUndlE Test faciliTy at bmE) is a test facility, which was designed to investigate the emerging flow conditions in various nuclear fuel assembly rod bundles. The measurement method is based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Matching of Index of Refractory (MIR) method. In the test loop, it was necessary to install a flow straightener that was able to condition the velocity field before the rod bundle. The results of CFD simulations could be used to improve the understanding of the inlet conditions in the rod bundle test section.The second part of the benchmark deals with the 3D CFD modeling of the velocity field within the 7 pin rod bundle placed in the test section. Class II methanol masers are signs of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). Recent findings show that MYSO accretion bursts cause flares of these masers. Thus, maser monitoring can be used to identify such bursts. Burst-induced SED changes provide valuable information on a very intense phase of high-mass star formation. In mid-January 2019, a maser flare of the MYSO G358.93-0.03 was reported. ALMA and SMA imaging resolved the core of the star forming region and proved the association of the masers with the brightest continuum source MM1. However, no significant flux rise of the (sub)mm dust continuum was found. Thus, we performed NIR imaging with GROND and IFU spectroscopy with FIFI-LS aboard SOFIA to detect possible counterparts to the (sub)mm sources, and compare their photometry to archival measurements. The comparison of pre-burst and burst SEDs is of crucial importance to judge whether a luminosity increase due to the burst is present and if it triggered the maser flare. The FIR fluxes of MM1 measured with FIFI-LS exceed those from Herschel significantly, which clearly confirms the presence of an accretion burst. The second epoch data, taken about 16 months later, still show increased fluxes. Our RT modeling yielded major burst parameters and suggests that the MYSO features a circumstellar disk which might be transient. From the multi-epoch SEDs, conclusions on heating and cooling time-scales could be drawn. Circumstances of the burst-induced maser relocation have been explored. The verification of the accretion burst from G358 is another confirmation that Class II methanol maser flares represent an alert for such events. The few events known to date already indicate that there is a broad range in burst strength and duration as well as environmental characteristics. This paper reports observations of a 22 GHz water maser `superburst' in the G25.65+1.05 massive star forming region, conducted in response to an alert from the Maser Monitoring Organisation (M2O). Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network (EVN) recorded a maser flux density of $1.2 \times 10^{4}$ Jy. The superburst was investigated in the spectral, structural and temporal domains and its cause was determined to be an increase in maser path length generated by the superposition of multiple maser emitting regions aligning in the line of sight to the observer. This conclusion was based on the location of the bursting maser in the context of the star forming region, its complex structure, and its rapid onset and decay.

In this work we aimed to describe the three-dimensional morphology and kinematics of the molecular gas of the water-fountain nebula IRAS 16342-3814. In order to do this, we retrieved data from the ALMA archive to analyse it using a simple spatio-kinematical model. We used the software SHAPE to construct a three-dimensional spatio-kinematical model of the molecular gas in IRAS 16342-3814. By reproducing the intensity distribution and position-velocity diagram of the CO emission from the ALMA observations we derived the morphology and velocity field of the gas. We used CO(1-0) data to support the physical interpretation of the model. A spatio-kinematical model that includes a high-velocity collimated outflow embedded within material expanding at relatively lower velocity reproduces the images and position-velocity diagrams from the observations. The high-velocity collimated outflow exhibits deceleration across its length, while the velocity of the surrounding component increases with distance. The morphology of the emitting region; the velocity field and the mass of the gas as function of velocity are in excellent agreement with the properties predicted for a molecular outflow driven by a jet. The timescale of the molecular outflow is estimated to be ~70-100 years. An oscillating pattern was found associated to the high-velocity collimated outflow. The oscillation period of the pattern is T~60-90 years and its opening angle is ~2 degrees. The CO (3-2) emission in IRAS 16342-3814 is interpreted in terms of a jet-driven molecular outflow expanding along an elongated region. The position-velocity diagram and the mass spectrum reveal a feature due to entrained material that is associated to the driving jet. It is likely that the jet in those objects has already disappeared since it is expected to last only for a couple of hundred years., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figues. Accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the measurement of the trigonometric parallaxes of 1612 MHz hydroxyl masers around two asymptotic giant branch stars, WX Psc and OH138.0+7.2, using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array with in-beam phase referencing calibration. We obtained a 3-sigma upper limit of <=5.3 mas on the parallax of WX Psc, corresponding to a lower limit distance estimate of >~190 pc. The obtained parallax of OH138.0+7.2 is 0.52+/-0.09 mas (+/-18%), corresponding to a distance of 1.9(+0.4,-0.3) kpc, making this the first hydroxyl maser parallax below one milliarcsecond. We also introduce a new method of error analysis for detecting systematic errors in the astrometry. Finally, we compare our trigonometric distances to published phase-lag distances toward these stars and find a good agreement between the two methods., Comment: Preprint, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (January 17, 2017)

Context. It will soon become possible to directly link the most accurate radio reference frame with the Gaia optical reference frame using many common extragalactic objects. It is important to know the level of coincidence between the radio and optical positions of compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). Aims. Using the best catalogues available at present, we investigate how many AGN with significantly large optical-radio positional offsets exist as well as the possible causes of these offsets. Methods. We performed a case study by finding optical counterparts to the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF2) radio sources in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 9 (DR9). The ICRF2 catalogue was used as a reference because the radio positions determined by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations are about two orders of magnitude more accurate than the optical positions. Results. We find 1297 objects in common for ICRF2 and SDSS DR9. Statistical analysis of the optical-radio differences verifies that the SDSS DR9 positions are accurate to ~55 mas in both coordinates, with no systematic offset with respect to ICRF2. We find 51 sources (~4% of the sample) for which the positional offset exceeds 170 mas (~3{\sigma}). Astrophysical explanations must exist for most of these outliers. There are 3 known strong gravitational lenses among them. Dual AGN or recoiling supermassive black holes may also be possible. Conclusions. The most accurate Gaia-VLBI reference frame link will require a careful selection of a common set of objects by eliminating the outliers. On the other hand, the significant optical-radio positional non-coincidences may offer a new tool for finding e.g. gravitational lenses or dual AGN candidates. Detailed follow-up radio interferometric and optical spectroscopic observations are encouraged to investigate the outlier sources found in this study., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. With Gaia, it will become possible to directly link the radio and optical reference frames using a large number of common objects. For the most accurate radio-optical link, it is important to know the level of spatial coincidence between the quasars' optical positions, and the radio positions determined by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. The "outlier" objects, for which the positions are significantly offset at the two different electromagnetic wavebands, may be of astrophysical interest as well. Here we present a case study to compare the radio positions of ~800 quasars common in the second realization of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF2) and in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) catalogue. Compared to the radio ICRF2, the SDSS provides two orders of magnitude less accurate astrometric data in the optical. However, its extensive sky coverage and faint magnitude limit allow us to directly relate the positions of a large sample of radio sources. This way we provide an independent check of the overall accuracy of the SDSS positions and confirm that the astrometric calibration of the latest Data Release 8 (DR8) is poorer than that of the DR7. We find over 20 sources for which the optical and radio brightness peaks are apparently not coincident at least at the 3-sigma level of SDSS DR7 positional accuracy, and briefly discuss the possible causes, including dual active galactic nuclei., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure.
