Purpose Sustainable development requires multiple stakeholders to work and learn across practices, in other words, it requires boundary crossing competence. To prepare students for their future sustainability professions, higher education should facilitate the development of boundary crossing competence in its curricula. This study aims to confirm whether boundary crossing learning can be stimulated by workshop-based support in multi-stakeholder projects. Design/methodology/approach This quasi-experimental intervention study (N = 122) investigates the effect of a series of supporting workshops on students’ boundary crossing learning in multi-stakeholder projects. The workshops allowed students to adopt four learning mechanisms (identification, coordination, reflection and transformation) theorised to stimulate learning across boundaries between practices. Students followed zero, one, or two workshops. By analysing the student learning reports, the study examines the effect of the workshop intervention on students’ self-efficacy for stakeholder collaboration, the number of reported student-stakeholder collaborative activities and the reported boundary crossing learning mechanisms. Findings The results show that a series of two workshops increase the number of reported collaborative activities and activates the students’ boundary crossing learning in terms of reflection and transformation. Research limitations/implications These findings support the evidence-based design of multi-stakeholder learning environments for sustainable development and contribute to the body of knowledge regarding learning across practices. Originality/value Boundary crossing competence receives increasing attention as an asset for sustainable development. The added value of this study lies in its confirmation that the boundary crossing theory can be translated into directed educational support that can stimulate students’ boundary crossing learning.

The competence to work together and co-create with others outside one's own scientific domain, institute, and/or culture, is a critical competence for future engineers to respond to emerging global challenges. In this context, Boundary crossing (BC) competence is crucial. In a university-wide Comenius Leadership project we currently develop BC learning trajectories for various study programmes that aim to foster BC competence development by explicating and aligning BC learning activities. Within the context of this project, we focus on disciplinary, cultural, and university-society boundaries, but consider these to be exemplary for other boundaries. Our fundament is the boundary crossing theory of [1] and its four learning mechanisms (identification, coordination, reflection, transformation) representing catalysts for learning. In this concept paper we explain, what boundary crossing competence is, why it is important for engineers, and what steps to take towards BC competence development in a study programme. In our oral presentation we will explain how we operationalised these mechanisms into concrete educational tools: the BC-rubric for explicating learning across boundaries, a blueprint learning trajectory, and a tool to be used in teacher teams to identify BC learning activities in curricula. We will share examples of BC learning activities and their alignment into curricular learning, and how we aim to assess and monitor the implementation of the BC learning pathways and their effects on students and teachers. This concept paper gives a solid fundament for engineering educators to critically reflect on how they explicitly address, coach, assess and further develop students' boundary crossing competence required for the engaged engineer.

Steeds meer studenten leren in authentieke omgevingen met echte vraagstukken waarin ze samen werken, leren en kennis co-creëren met andere partijen. Dit vraagt dat studenten leren om de grenzen van hun eigen praktijk te overbruggen, oftewel ze moeten ‘boundary crossen’. Iedereen voelt aan dat deze leeromgevingen veel leerpotentieel met zich meebrengen, maar wat kunnen studenten hier nu precies leren? Dit artikel beschrijft de ontwikkeling van de boundary crossing rubric die expliciteert wat studenten kunnen leren van authentieke multi-stakeholder projecten.

Recent changes in planning context, object, subject and approaches characterised by the key words wickedness, collaborative processes and boundary crossing, require a reconsideration of competencies needed for professional planners and evidence for the effectiveness of learning environments in which student planners can practice these competencies. This study explores if five “regional learning environments” (RLEs) contribute to students competence development and if working in multidisciplinary groups and with multiple external actors has an added value for this learning. Results show a differing pattern of competence development across RLEs. Multidisciplinary RLEs more strongly foster students’ competence development. Quantitative data show less effect of multi-actor collaboration while qualitative data show a wide range of potential learning outcomes typically related to multidisciplinary group work or multi-actor collaboration. It is concluded that the learning potential of RLEs is not optimally utilised yet and that process coaching is an important precondition for increasing students’ learning.

In de afgelopen twee jaren heeft de leerstoelgroep Educatie- en competentiestudies (ECS) van Wageningen UR in nauwe samenwerking met partijen uit het groene onderwijs vijf projecten uitgevoerd in het kader van het WURKSonderzoeksprogramma ‘Competenties voor het groene kennissysteem’ (totale looptijd: 2011-2015). WURKS staat voor Wageningen UR Knowledge Sharing oftewel voor het toepassen van Wageningse kennis in het overige groene onderwijs. De centrale doelstelling van het WURKS-programma is dienstverlening aan instellingen in het groene onderwijs in de vorm van toegepast en vraaggestuurd onderwijskundig onderzoek en daaraan gekoppelde didactische en onderwijskundige ondersteuning. De projecten zijn tot stand gekomen met betrokkenen uit het groene (vmbo-mbo-hbo) onderwijsveld.

In regioleerprojecten voeren studenten een opdracht uit in een regio die een opdrachtgever iets oplevert en waar studenten van kunnen leren. Maar wat kunnen ze leren en welke kenmerken van een regioleer-arrangement zijn cruciaal om die leereffecten te bereiken? Die vragen staan centraal in dit onderzoek.

Het onderzoek naar praktijkleren in vmbo groen gaat over de varianten van deze vorm van leren binnen en buiten de school. De vraag is hoe dit wordt ingevuld, hoe het wordt beoordeeld, wat het oplevert en wat de rol van docenten is.

In een onderzoek naar ‘internationale’ competenties voor startbekwame mbo’ers plant is in kaart gebracht over welke competenties het gaat. Groen mbo bereidt hen immers voor op een loopbaan die zeer waarschijnlijk een internationale dimensie heeft.

Wat zijn de leeropbrengsten van buitenonderwijs voor leerlingen van twaalf tot achttien? En hoe kan je dit als docent faciliteren? Om deze vragen te kunnen beantwoorden, is een literatuuronderzoek uitgevoerd en is een aantal praktijken bestudeerd.

Welke relaties bestaan er tussen persoonlijkheidskenmerken van leerlingen en de mate van ontwikkeling van bepaalde competenties die relevant zijn voor hun opleiding? En hoe kunnen docenten hier bij de coaching van leerlingen rekening mee houden? Dit project wil een stap zetten naar coaching op maat.

De regio wordt steeds meer gezien als de plek waar ondernemers, overheden, maatschappelijke organisaties, burgers, onderzoekers, en het onderwijs samen werken aan duurzaamheid en innovatie. Zo ontstaan er netwerken waarin men werkt aan duurzame ontwikkeling en maatschappelijke verandering, oftewel regionale transitie.
