Abstract

Everyone has a name. Names are more than a symbol or label. The culture of a people finds expression in the language they employ. When personal names are studied historically, philosophically, etymologically, and psychologically the reflection of the social and natural environment can be perceived. This paper focuses on the analysis of the formation of personal names, the semantic meaning and the connotation embedded in names, and the connection between given names and Chinese culture. 2. Playing by Someone Else's Rules: A Phenomenological Study of Vocational Teachers' Lived Experiences under School Reform.

Abstract

The experiences of six vocational education teachers from several high schools in Chesapeake County, Maryland, who "lived under" the educational reforms of the past 2 decades were examined in a phenomenological study. The study, which used the approach designed by Van Manen in "Researching Lived Experience," included consideration of the researcher's personal experience; the experiential descriptions of others; open-ended and repeated conversations with teachers to generate themes and key words or phrases that open up the phenomenon; etymological tracings of words to reveal more about the phenomenon; and experiential descriptions found in literate and art to understand the phenomenon more fully. The teacher's experience under school reform was determined to be similar to the following stages of grief experienced by dying patients: (1) denial and isolation; (2) anger; (3) bargaining; (4) depression; and (5) acceptance. The stories collected during the study provided evidence that sharing their stories of "life under reform" helps vocational teachers feel less alone, enables them to begin imagining and talking about a better future under reform, and allows them to put their pain to good use by understanding how it has transformed them. The importance of school reform and teachers finding ways to draw strength from one another was emphasized. (Contains 24 references.) (MN)

3. Latvian Naming Patterns, 1880-1991.

Abstract

To discover what effects the political, religious, social, and economic climate had on naming children, 100 families (representing almost 700 individuals) were interviewed to identify patterns in first names given over three generations. The sample of 100 families includes people from different religious backgrounds and from different parts of Latvia. Native speakers conducted the interviews. Data were analyzed by time period, religious background, linguistic origin of the name, and the name's origin, meaning, and significance. Results indicate that during the Soviet occupation, significantly more names defined as Latvian were chosen. This is interpreted as a demonstration of Latvian patriotism during this troubling period. 4. En Un Nombre, Que Hay? An Introduction to Spanish Personal Names.

The learning activities contained in this booklet are designed to help students of Spanish learn to use Spanish personal names approximately in a variety of situations. The first section outlines common titles of address for men and women, lists popular feminine and masculine first names, discusses compound names, lists common Spanish family names, and discusses their order in the formal name or address. The second section presents additional commonly-used titles related to occupation and discusses their use. Section three gives more information about the order of names and its variation within families based on kinship. Several cases are presented in which different combinations of names occur within a family. A Spanish language credit card application illustrates practical issues in name use. This section also contains a review of all the material presented. Each section includes simple exercises, with answer keys, for reinforcement. (MSE)

5. The Onomastic Treasure of the CIA.

Abstract

The contents of documents prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the Cold War, on onomastic aspects of personal names for over 30 languages, are summarized. The languages range from those commonly taught to less commonly taught ones. The number of speakers of the languages range from 1.35 million (Estonian) to 610 million (Chinese). The reports range in length from 14 pages (Slovenian) to 433 pages (Russian); the median number is 46 pages. It is proposed that the documents have substantial value for the study of names. Most contain information on naming in the language, style of name use, pronunciation, transliteration, given names, family names, and the use of titles. Some contain the meanings of names. Many list special features of the language, such as laws on naming, patronymics, and rules for women's names. The report provides a list of the documents, information on their availability, maps showing their coverage, a summary of the data in each, and notes on special features. (MSE)

7. The Definite Article with Proper Names for Referring to People in the Greek of Acts.

Abstract

A study examined the presence or absence of the article with proper names for people in the Bible's book of Acts, using four categories of description, including: (1) the unmarked patterns involving the first mention of a participant and further references to the participant in the same incident; (2) the reintroduction of participants after an absence; (3) further references to a participant in the same incident that are anarthrous as contrasted with arthrous; and (4) the use of the article with names in reported speeches. It is proposed that, in different contexts, the four situations illustrate the principle that anarthrous references to particular, known participants either mark the participant as locally salient or highlight the speech that he or she utters. 8. A Case Study of Occupational Jargon.

This paper examines the language used by workers in a china factory in order to present the characteristics and underlying features of occupational jargon. The paper shows: (1) jargon is affected by regional-local pronunciation, grammatical expressions and lexical items, and by individual speech styles which result from general linguistic phenomena such as phonological change and folk etymology; (2) terms which are traditionally a part of the industry represent several levels of technical expertise; (3) terms which are acquired through socialization in the factory often undergo a change in form or function; and (4) terms which are innovated on the job result from haste and from incidents which occur in the factory. This is a collection of eight essays dealing with various aspects of language treatment in Egypt. For at least 90 years there have been contributions to onomastics from the fields of social psychology and personality. These contributions have included work on various types of names, such as ambiguous, alias, hypocoristic, junior, nickname, surname, and unique name. Other research has focused on the structure of names, style of usage, and style of address. Recent applied research has been directed to stereotypes of specific names, popularity, school achievement, ethnic stereotypes, attribution theory, personality aspects, and signature size. 12. Ancient Aleut Personal Names: Kadaangim Asangin/Asangis. Materials from the Billings Expedition, 1790-1792.

Abstract

An analysis of Aleut personal names is presented, derived from census data obtained during a 1790-1792 scientific expedition to the Aleutian Islands. The census contained about 1,500 different Aleut male names from 66 villages, listed alphabetically and interpreted here. Some identifiable female names are also included. The work also provides insight into Aleut culture and values. An introductory section provides background about the expedition, the finding of the manuscripts containing the census information, issues in interpretation of the manuscript data (including spelling variations), an analysis of formal aspects of Aleut names (one-word and phrasal names, word classes and construction, dialectal features, foreign elements), different accounts of naming customs, and a tentative semantic classification of names as referring to human beings, nature, subsistence, social relations, and other elements. The corpus of names is then presented by location. Names are also indexed, and a map of Aleut communities is included. (MSE)

14. The Environment of Names in the Classroom.

Abstract

The study of names, onomastics, can hold a fascination for all students at every grade level and in various subjects, provided the study is approached methodically and is adaptable at every grade level. One method is to begin with concentric rings whereby the student looks first at his own name and then moves to names of people and places around him in ever widening categories. Or, one can begin by asking students to look up their given names in a dictionary and providing the student with the chance to do a dictionary exercise. By comparing last names, students can often see patterns of national origin emerging. The histories of etymologies of names can provide interesting stories and a knowledge of the history of the language and can introduce various cultural elements into name selection. Street names, pets' names, the names of cities, topographic names, state names, and so on, can all be incorporated in various interdisciplinary studies. While moving through the various approaches to onomastics, the student can grasp the importance of names study, can begin to see order in the apparent chaos of names surrounding him, and can discover on his own other forms of names. Then, the actual annotated listing of names precedes a concluding digression which proposes to apply some of the findings to historical analysis. 16. Language and Composition: Does the Subject Matter?

Abstract

Attempts to combine language and composition in the freshman English course at Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, Minnesota) should interest all teachers of English. One project utilized a single key word for several assignments. Students were asked to (1) think through the meaning of the word for a week and write definitions and associations, (2) consult dictionaries to differentiate connotative and denotative definitions, (3) collect definitions and usages from their peers, (4) consider possible bases for definition classification, (5) trace the word in the "New English Dictionary," and (6) compile citations of uses of the word encountered in print. An alternative assignment was an historical survey using six versions of the Bible to trace a given passage. One nonhistorical approach involved an analysis of words used in advertisements. In other instances, studying the origins of place names led to the compilation of linguistic atlases, and an essay assignment encouraged students to project generalizations about language after reading "local color" fiction. The limited and frequently erroneous conclusions which resulted became the bases for further discussions. (RD)

18. Introduction to Linguistic Philosophy.

Abstract

Linguistics is the empirical study of language; linguistic philosophy is an approach to understanding the underlying nature of the phenomena that linguists study. The discussion here of linguistic philosophy is designed for linguists, but presupposes no prior acquaintance with either the philosophy of language or linguistic theory. It is concerned with the major theorists of linguistics, semantics, and philosophy of language. The bulk of the text is divided into five sections. The first is concerned with foundational issues such as truth, meaning, and the nature of language. The other four deal with the specific linguistic phenomena that have attracted the most attention: naming (names, sense, and nominarum, and the causal theory of names); definite descriptions (description and analysis, and description as names); nonextensional contexts (modality and propositional attitudes); and generality (indefinite noun phrases, Fregean quantifiers, and class theory). 19. What Is in a Name? The Impact of Strategic Name Change on Student Enrollment in Colleges and Universities.

A study compared enrollment patterns at 140 colleges and universities five years before and five years after they changed their names, predicting that the strategy of changing the institution's name would positively influence enrollment. Results indicate that on average, the strategic name change did not affect enrollment, and only 7% of institutions surveyed experienced significant growth. (Author/MSE)

Abstract

A study investigated one segment of toponymy, the study of place names, in Quebec. The first chapter discusses the nature, functions, and functioning of place names from a semiotic-logico-linguistic viewpoint. Chapter two describes the corpus and methodology of the study. Over 900 occurrences of "anse," the French word for "cove," in Quebec were examined from the perspective that the cove names given to geographic locations are an attempt to acknowledge meaning through metaphor. The cove names were assigned to four categories, including: parallel or similar forms; native names; homographic or identical names; and coves named after people. Within these categories, further lexical, morphosyntactic, and homonymic analysis is performed. The third chapter examines how semantic and semiotic connotations are incorporated into place names, laying a foundation for the concept of the place name as metaphor. The fourth and final chapter addresses in greater depth the idea that the place name may be both created and perceived as a metaphor within a particular spatial and temporal context. Abstract

This linguistically oriented bibliography lists 675 items that relate in part or in fall to the speech and language behavior of U.S. residents or citizens of Hispanic background. The bibliography, intended as a continuation of Hensley C. Woodbridge's 1954 study, includes material completed or published through December 1974, but generally excludes items not available through ordinary channels. Most of the items are annotated fully, many critically and at some length. In addition to examining all items that treat the phonology, grammar, and lexicon of natively-spoken U.S. Spanish, the bibliographers have attempted to include all lingusitic studies of U.S. Hispano English and all studies of code-switching. The major organizational categories are: (1) U.S. in general; (2) Chicanos in general; (3) Puerto Ricans on the U.S. mainland; (4) Cubans; (5) Islenos (Canary Islanders in Louisiana); (6) Peninsulares (Spaniards); and (7) Sephardic Jews. 27. Synchronic Etymologies of Ethnonyms as Cause of the Traditional Belief in Monstrous Races.

Abstract

A psychological basis for belief in human monsters is provided by the possibility of human aberrations, instinctive human fear and fascination for such prodigies, and the existence of barbaric tales ridiculing foreigners. The role of language as a cause for such belief is investigated, specifically in terms of folk etymologies for more or less corrupt ethnonyms. The most common explanation to account for reports of monstrous races states that such stories are of literary origin, and are based, for example, on ancient Indian epics recorded by Greek writers. The Greek names for monstrous races are simply literal translations of descriptive Indian designations. The explanation offered here involves the human tendency to incorporate foreign terms into the purposely limited but efficient stock of sememes of a given language through associative etymology. The implications of this process for the relationship between language and concept-formation are briefly mentioned and an inventory of monstrous races and their names is provided. (CLK)

32. Interlingual and Interdialectal Borrowings in Chinese.

Abstract

The processes involved in "borrowing" words and structures between languages and among dialects are discussed and illustrated. Interlingual borrowings between Chinese and other languages have taken place in several different ways. Sometimes the sounds of the foreign word are imitated using the sounds of the borrowing language ("leidar" for 'radar' or "chop suey" for the Cantonese 'dzaapsoy'). Another common occurrences is that of translation borrowing or calque--the literal translation of foreign compounds or phrases into the native vocabulary ("jiwoei huey" meaning 'cocktail party'). Much more subtle are changes in meaning caused by the influence of foreign words with similar meanings. The adjective "weimiaw" used to mean 'delicate' in the sense of 'frail' or 'fine'; but because of the influence of English, it has come to be used to describe political and social situations as well. In another type of borrowing the structure of the borrowing language is changed by analogy with foreign forms, as illustrated by the current use of the Chinese sentence form as a nominal phrase construction ("The coup is in Vietnam" meaning 'coup in Vietnam'). Interdialectal borrowing of items is sometimes clearly noticeable but often hidden and "almost naturalized." As in borrowing between languages, there are a number of ways by which borrowing takes place. Examples are given in Cantonese, Mandarin, and other dialects. (JD)

As a result of this multiplicity of functions, classifications--often called ontologies--are developed in many communities of research and practice. Unfortunately, there is little communication and mutual learning; thus, efforts are fragmented, resulting in considerable reinvention and less than optimal products. (Author)
