The accelerating growth of seismic unrest before eruptions has been observed at many volcanoes and utilized for eruption forecasts. However, there are still many eruptions for which no precursory unrest has been identified, even at well-monitored volcanoes. The recent eruptions of Shinmoe-dake, Japan, have been another negative example of this kind. Here we present seismological evidence that the eruption preparation had been ongoing at the shallow depths beneath Shinmoe-dake for several months to a year. We investigated the seismic background level (SBL) of eleven-year data recorded around the volcano, including two stations about 1 km from the eruptive crater. We searched for persistent weak signals, focusing on low-amplitude time windows recorded during quiet nighttime. Then the spectra of daily background noise were classified by clustering analysis. The SBL analysis successfully revealed very weak precursory tremors from more than several months before the eruption, and residual tremors to the end of the eruptive period. The precursory signals grew acceleratory in a similar way as is assumed in the material failure forecast method applied to eruption forecasts. However, their growth was significantly slower and longer compared to other cases reported in the literature. Such slow and quiet eruption preparations would not be captured by conventional seismological methods. We expect that long-term SBL analyses on proximal seismic data will help detect early precursors, even at seismically quiet volcanoes, and will also help towards judging the end of an eruptive period., (© 2023. Muography is a novel method to highly resolve the internal structure of active volcanoes by taking advantage of the cosmic muon's strong penetration power. In this paper, we present the first high-definition image in the vicinity of craters of an erupting volcano called Sakurajima, Kyushu, Japan. The muography observation system based on the technique of multi-wire proportional chamber (mMOS) has been operated reliably during the data taking period of 157 days. The mMOS measured precisely the flux of muons up to the thickness of 5,000 meter-water-equivalent. It was shown that high-definition density maps around the Craters A, B and Showa could be determined with a precision of less than 7.5 × 7.5 m 2 which earlier had not yet been achieved. The observed density distribution suggests that the fall back deposits filled the magma pathway and increased their density underneath Craters A and B.

Peroxiredoxin 2, a typical 2-Cys peroxiredoxin, is the third most abundant protein in erythrocytes. It is understood that the physiologically functional state of peroxiredoxin 2 is the monomer, and that its role in scavenging low levels of H(2)O(2) results in the formation of disulfide-linked dimers, which are reversibly reduced to monomers by the thioredoxin-thioredoxin reductase system. Additionally, peroxiredoxins are highly susceptible to sulfinic acid formation through reactions with various peroxides. This overoxidized form, which is thought to convert peroxiredoxins into molecular chaperones and to be accompanied by a transition to polymeric forms, can be reversed by sulfiredoxins. However, physiological conformational changes and the antioxidant role of erythrocyte peroxiredoxin 2 are still unclear because there is low sulfiredoxin and thioredoxin-thioredoxin reductase activity in erythrocytes. In this study, we examined the structural and redox states of peroxiredoxin 2 in fresh hemolysates and estimated the activities of native and overoxidized peroxiredoxin 2 purified from red blood cells to clear the physiological roles of peroxiredoxin 2 in erythrocyte. Our findings demonstrate that native peroxiredoxin 2 exists as high molecular weight (>160 kDa) oligomers and that decamers or higher order molecular weight oligomers (260-460 kDa) have peroxidase activity. We further showed that peroxiredoxin 2 oligomers, which were predominantly composed of monomers in the reduced form, exert a chaperone activity equal to that of overoxidized peroxiredoxin 2 polymers. These results provide the novel insight that redox-active peroxiredoxin 2 functions in human red blood cells as high molecular weight oligomers that possess peroxidase and chaperone activities., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Over a period of roughly 40 days, starting on 8 July 2000, a caldera structure 1.7 kilometers in diameter developed by means of gradual depression and expansion of the summit crater at Miyake Island, Japan. At the same time, very-long-period (VLP) seismic signals were observed once or twice a day. Source mechanism analyses of the VLP signals show that the moment tensor solutions are smooth step functions over a time scale of 50 seconds, with dominant volumetric change components. We developed a model to explain the caldera and the VLP signals, in which a vertical piston of solid materials in the conduit is intermittently sucked into the magma chamber by lateral magma outflow. This model offers potential for making quantitative estimations of the characteristic physical properties of magma systems.

Broadband seismometers deployed at Aso volcano in Japan have detected a hydrothermal reservoir 1 to 1.5 kilometers beneath the crater that is continually resonating with periods as long as 15 seconds. When phreatic eruptions are observed, broadband seismograms elucidate a dynamic interplay between the reservoir and discharging flow along the conduit: gradual pressurization and long-period (approximately20 seconds) pulsations of the reservoir during the 100 to 200 seconds before the initiation of the discharge, followed by gradual deflation of the reservoir concurrent with the discharging flow. The hydrothermal reservoir, where water and heat from the deeper magma chamber probably interact, appears to help control the surface activity at Aso volcano.
