In nature all orchids develop a mutualistic association with specialized group of fungi called orchid mycorrhiza. In natural environment, orchids are exclusively reliant on mycorrhizal fungi for seed germination, establishment, growth and development. In the early developmental stages, all orchids are mycoheterotrophic, and in most cases the association subsists throughout their lifespan. The significance of orchid mycorrhizal fungi (OMF) for seed germination, nourishment, growth promotion, and survival has been established more than a century ago and tremendous advancements were made in recent decades. Till date, understanding the mode of interaction between orchids and mycorrhizal fungi and determining the architecture of interaction networks are major challenges in ecology and evolutionary biology. The development of molecular techniques has empowered us to unscramble the fungal diversity comprised in the symbiosis and has facilitated us to overcome the difficulties associated with the conventional identification of OMF and orchid-fungal interactions. In addition, the application of modern biotechnological approaches resolved many controversial issues of OMF. Recently, OMF are used for biological hardening and growth promotion of in vitro raised seedlings, early flowering and quality improvement of flowers, and diseases and pests management. The aim of this communication is to update and summarize orchid mycorrhizal research including isolation, culture, and characterization of OMF, understanding the mechanisms of orchid-fungus symbiosis, and application of OMF in seed germination, growth promotion, and survival of asymbiotically raised seedlings and conservation of orchids. Aim and background Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a crucial medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases and injuries affecting the oral cavity, jaw, and face. There is a lack of awareness about this field in the specific study area of hail. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, awareness, and perception of maxillofacial surgery among healthcare professionals and the public. Methods The study included 225 participants, consisting of dental and medical professionals and the general public in Hail, Saudi Arabia. Convenience sampling was employed, and participants needed to be at least 20 years old and residents of Hail. A validated online questionnaire, translated into Arabic, was used for data collection. Results A proportion (78.2%) of dental professionals were aware of the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Among the general population and most medical professionals, the most commonly associated procedures with maxillofacial surgery were the treatment of injuries, bone fractures, and morphological changes in the mouth, jaw, and face, reported by 85.8% of the participants. Furthermore, 60.9% of the participants believed that maxillofacial surgery was the appropriate referral for cleft lip correction. Conclusion The study highlighted significant knowledge about the role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons among the target population. Out of the 225 participants, 137 participants (60.9%) chose the specialty of maxillofacial surgery for surgical intervention to treat cleft lips. Moreover, 75.1% (n = 169) of the participants had previously heard about oral and maxillofacial surgery, while 24.9% (n = 56) had never heard of this specialty. The findings also showed that 189 participants were not aware that a maxillofacial surgeon is responsible for treating severe deformities that cannot be eliminated using orthodontics, such as growth disorders, hypoplasia and hypoplasia of the lower jaw, and asymmetry of the lower jaw (prognathism and retrognathism of the jaw). To bridge this knowledge gap, it is crucial to implement targeted educational initiatives and awareness campaigns among both the general population and healthcare professionals. By increasing awareness and understanding of the specialized role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, patient care can be optimized, and appropriate referrals to these specialists can be ensured. Clinical significance This study shows the importance of increasing awareness of oral and maxillofacial surgery among health professionals and the general public. Thiourea derivatives have been used as receptors in the development of selective electrodes to metallic ions (ISEs). Among the receptors used in the construction of ISEs to Pb(II) ions are: 1-benzoyl-3,3-dimethylthiourea (1), 1-(2-furoyl)-3,3-dimethylthiourea (2) and 1-(2-thiophenyl)-3,3-dimethylthiourea (3). Although, there are several analytical studies on the performance of those sensors, the development of theoretical models is important to elucidate the differences observed in their response. In this work, the density functional B3LYP and the 6-311G (d, p) basis set was used to calculate the geometry, the electronic structure, the IR spectra, the energies of the HOMO-LUMO orbitals and the global reactivity parameters of these molecules. The calculated parameters were related with those of the analytical response characteristics for the constructed sensors. Vinasse, which is commonly referred to as stillage, is a aqueous by-product of bioethanol processing. This side-product is yielded in a very large quantity in bioethanol industry since the production of 1 L of ethanol will generate 13 L of vinasse. Hence it is become a problem of bioethanol industry since vinasse waste doesn’t have economic value and harmful to the environment. This industrial waste has high COD and BOD, high acidity, and high temperature when discharged from the bottom of distillation unit. To overwhelmed this drawbacks, it is crucial to attempt the reduction of the negative characteristic of vinasse as well as production of added value of vinasse. In fact, vinasse contains a considerable amount of potassium and organic matter which is beneficial for plant growth and improving the soil fertility. Thus, in this work, vinasse was utilized as a raw material for organic fertilizer. Vinasse waste was formulated with other sugarcane industrial waste (filter cake and boiler ash), and NPK fertilizer in various composition yielding solid Organo-Mineral Fertilizer (OMF). Among all the composition of OMF, It was demonstrated that vinasse formulated with 3, 6, and 9% of NPK fulfilled the Indonesian National Standar (SNI) of solid fertilizer. Thus these types of OMF were used to fertilize tomato plant. The effects of vinasse-based OMF on some growth indices of tomato plant were examined. It was revealed that vinasse fertilizer formulated with 9% of NPK exhibited the best impact to the tomato plant growth.

The Orchidaceae are globally distributed and represent a diverse lineage of obligate mycotrophic plants. Given their dependence on symbiotic fungi for germination and/or plant development, fungal community structure in substrates is expected to influence the distribution and persistence of orchid species. Yet, simultaneous characterization of orchid mycorrhizal fungal (OMF) communities in roots and in soil is rarely reported. To explain the co-distributions of OMF in roots, orchid-occupied, and bulk soil, we characterized mycorrhizal fungi associated with Platanthera praeclara over multiple years across its entire natural distribution within the North American tallgrass prairie. Root derived OMF communities included 24 Ceratobasidiaceae and 7 Tulasnellaceae operational taxonomic units (OTUs) though the orchid exhibited high spatio-temporal specificity toward a single Ceratobasidiaceae OTU, which was strongly stable across population sizes and phenological stages of the sampled individuals. The preferred OMF OTUs were primarily restricted to orchid-occupied locations while infrequent or absent in bulk soil. Variation in soil OMF assemblies was explained most by soil moisture, magnesium, manganese, and clay. In this first study of coupled root and soil OMF communities across a threatened grassland ecosystem, we report a strong relationship, further nuanced by soil chemistry, between a rare fungus and a rare orchid. This paper presents the extensions carried out in the Android measurement and monitoring tool TestelDroid, in order to support remote control and large-scale experimentation. The extensions includes support for Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI), cOntrol and Management Framework (OMF) and OMFMeasurement Library (OML). SCPI is the most widespread interface for measurement equipment control in many areas, for example, electronics or telecommunications. On the other hand, the support of technologies like OMF and OML provides powerful orchestration framework languages which reduces the time required for dening experiments.

Root-associated endophytic fungi (RAF) are found asymptomatically in almost all plant groups. However, little is known about the compositions and potential functions of RAF communities associated with most Orchidaceae species. In this study, the diversity of RAF was examined in four wild epiphytic orchids, Acampe rigida, Doritis pulcherrima, Renanthera coccinea, and Robiquetia succisa, that occur in southern China. A culture-independent method involving Illumina amplicon sequencing, and an in vitro culture method, were used to identify culturable fungi. The RAF community diversity differed among the orchid roots, and some fungal taxa were clearly concentrated in a certain orchid species, with more OTUs being detected. By investigating mycorrhizal associations, the results showed that 28 (about 0.8%) of the 3527 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) could be assigned as OMF, while the OTUs of non-mycorrhizal fungal were about 99.2%. Among the OMFs, Ceratobasidiaceae OTUs were the most abundant with different richness, followed by Thelephoraceae. In addition, five Ceratobasidium sp. strains were isolated from D. pulcherrima, R. succisa, and R. coccinea roots with high separation rates. These culturable Ceratobasidium strains will provide materials for host orchid conservation and for studying the mechanisms underlying mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Purpose: To investigate the current status of undergraduate training in oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgery in Germany using a nationwide survey and hence contribute to an educational improvement in the field.Methods: A 39-item questionnaire was sent to all university clinics with an OMF surgery chair in Germany (n = 34).Results: Ninety-two percent of OMF clinics are involved in the curricular training in medicine and 100% in dentistry. Eighty-one percent of OMF clinics perform curricular examinations and, respectively, 86% in dentistry. Examinations are mainly performed written with multiple-choice tests (62% medicine, 76% dentistry) and using non-structured oral examinations (57% medicine, 86% dentistry). Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) are only used in 19% of all faculties.Conclusion: OMF surgery with its involvement both in medical and dental education has a special position as a surgical discipline. Our results show that OMF as a specialty is underrepresented in dental and especially in medical education considering the numerical and health economic importance of OMF consultations. Enhancing curricular integration and developing more structured examination forms is necessary to guarantee a high quality of OMF education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The LabWiki leverages the current state of the art tools for the orchestration of experiments in the networking community and propose a new approach to execute and reproduce experiments. Background: Surgical extraction of third molars is one of the most common oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures performed and may have a number of associated complications. One of these complications is inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) dysaesthesia or impairment of sensory perception (including paraesthesia and/or anaesthesia). Previous studies assume that most clinicians use various combinations of nine radiologic criteria on panoramic radiographs as indicators of the relationship and, therefore, predictors of the risk of postoperative dysaesthesia. Our study assessed both the current radiologic modalities and assessment criteria used by Australian oral and maxillofacial surgeons when determining the proximity of mandibular canal to third molars.Methods: A survey of all surgeon members of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZOMS) practising in Australia was undertaken.Results: Of the 105 questionnaires sent to surgeons, 72 responses (68 per cent) were returned. All surgeons reported using the panoramic radiograph but only 25 per cent considered it sufficiently accurate in determining the relationship between the mandibular canal (MC) and the third molar root, while 61 per cent of surgeons use CT for this purpose but the average frequency of use was very low (five per cent). This study also revealed that the nine radiologic criteria on a panoramic radiograph are used to varying extents by Australian surgeons. Nearly all surgeons use 'change in MC direction' and 'MC narrowing' to determine and close relationship. Thirty-one per cent used superimposition of the MC and the root of the third molar alone and 24 per cent used appearance of contact of the root with the MC alone in the absence of any other radiologic criteria to indicate close or intimate relationship.Conclusion: Further research is required to determine the accuracy and observer agreement or reliability of using the nine panoramic characteristics, to determine this relationship and whether the presurgical determination of proximity and position (buccal or lingual) of the canal utilizing CT has any usefulness in determining the surgical protocol or affect on postoperative morbidity. An area of heightened interest after the 1994 Northridge earthquake was the seismic ductility of steel moment frame connections. Work by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Seismic Analysis Code (SAC), American Institute of Steel Construction Inc. (AISC) and many others over the last few years has expanded knowledge in a number of areas and provided a set of new and modified connection details for improved seismic performance. Some of the more popular connection types, such as the new reduced beam section (RBS) detail, will be described more fully later.Questions about the performance characteristics of the k-area region of wide-flange steel shapes were also addressed by AISC. Such regions contain variations in mechanical properties due to cold forming during the mill straightening process. Localized material properties in this region, such as strain hardening, yield and ultimate strengths, ductility and toughness are known to become altered. An extensive research effort sponsored by AISC was initiated to study the effects and performance of the k-area region is nearing completion. Such studies, conducted at four different universities, evaluated the cyclic inelastic strain behavior of rolled steel shapes, the performance characteristics of rotary and gag-straightened rolled column sections, assessed beam-to-column joint assemblies and updated the standard shape material properties database for improved design and reliability. TolC and the other members of the outer membrane factor (OMF) family are outer membrane proteins forming trimeric channels that serve as a conduit for most actively effluxed substrates in Gram-negative bacteria by providing a key component in a multitude of tripartite efflux-pumps. Current models of tripartite pump assembly ascribe substrate selection to the inner-membrane transporter and periplasmic-adapter protein (PAP) assembly, suggesting that TolC is a passive, non-selective channel. While the membrane-embedded portion of the protein adopts a porin-like fold, the periplasmic domain of TolC presents a unique "alpha-barrel" architecture. This alpha-barrel consists of pseudo-continuous α-helices forming curved coiled-coils, whose tips form α-helical hairpins, relaxation of which results in a transition of TolC from a closed to an open-aperture state allowing effective efflux of substrates through its channel. Here, we analyzed the effects of site-directed mutations targeting the alpha-barrel of TolC, of the principal tripartite efflux-pump Escherichia coli AcrAB-TolC, on the activity and specificity of efflux. Live-cell functional assays with these TolC mutants revealed that positions both at the periplasmic tip of, and partway up the TolC coiled-coil alpha-barrel domain are involved in determining the functionality of the complex. We report that mutations affecting the electrostatic properties of the channel, particularly the D371V mutation, significantly impact growth even in the absence of antibiotics, causing hyper-susceptibility to all tested efflux-substrates. These results suggest that inhibition of TolC functionality is less well-tolerated than deletion of tolC , and such inhibition may have an antibacterial effect. Significantly and unexpectedly, we identified antibiotic-specific phenotypes associated with novel TolC mutations, suggesting that substrate specificity may not be determined solely by the transporter protein or the PAP, but may reside at least partially with the TolC-channel. Furthermore, some of the effects of mutations are difficult to reconcile with the currently prevalent tip-to-tip model of PAP-TolC interaction due to their location higher-up on the TolC alpha-barrel relative to the proposed PAP-docking sites. In Gram-negative bacteria, trans-envelope efflux pumps have periplasmic membrane fusion proteins (MFPs) as essential components. MFPs act as mediators between outer membrane factors (OMFs) and inner membrane factors (IMFs). In this study, structure-function relations of the ATP-driven glycolipid efflux pump DevBCA-TolC/HgdD from the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 were analyzed. The binding of the MFP DevB to the OMF TolC absolutely required the respective tip-regions. The interaction of DevB with the IMF DevAC mainly involved the β-barrel and the lipoyl domain.
