The Education Committee (EdCom) of the IEEE EMC Society invited students currently enrolled in a college or university at either the Ph.D., graduate, or undergraduate level to submit a PowerPoint slide set that demonstrated a method for locating an RF source in the presence of unknown reflections. The task for the team was to locate each transmitter as quickly as possible - in the Exhibit Hall! Contest Chair Colin Brench organized a fun and educational activity for the students. Have you ever stood outside on a hot, sunny day, and wondered whether all that sunshine could be used for something? If you attended the Youth Technical Program held during the 2024 IEEE EMC+SIPI Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona, you learned to harness the power of the sun! Stephanie Zajac, Youth Technical Program Chair (shown in photo below with microphone), discussed the principles of renewable energy, the photoelectric effect, and their application to photovoltaic technology. Each participant applied these principles to construct a solar powered car, useful for cruising the streets of Phoenix, and beyond! As you can see from these accompanying photos, all attendees enjoyed an educational and entertaining day.

25. EMC+SIPI 2024 Keynote Address

Abstract

Ed Godshalk, Ph.D., IEEE Fellow, presented “The Story of the Transatlantic Telegraph and the World's First Internet” as the EMC+SIPI 2024 Keynote Address. Ed explained that electrical telegraphy may be considered the first example of electrical engineering. Electrical telegraphs were point-to-point text messaging systems that were first used around 1840. His fascinating presentation traced the formative years of electrical engineering and the evolution of transmission line engineering that enabled a global communications network over 180 years ago! Many great minds of the 19th century (Samuel Morse, Hans Christian Orsted, Joseph Henry, Carl Friedrich Gauss, and many others) were featured in the presentation which concluded with the modern transoceanic fiber optic cable, which forms the backbone of today's global communications network. Did you know that presently 99% of the data traffic that is crossing oceans is carried by undersea cables? Ed noted that the total carrying capacity of a submarine cable is in the terabits per second range while satellites typically offer only 1 gigabit per second capability. It was an inspiring presentation and a great addition to the technical program!

Abstract

Information about several papers discussed at the "Advances in Antenna and Wireless Test and Measurement" workshop held on September 24, 2008, prior to the "2008 Antenna Systems and Technology Conference" in Austin, Texas is presented. Topics include the basic principles of antenna as applied to wireless communication systems by Doctor Warren Stutzman and wireless device test and measurement as key contributor for wireless testing technology by Doctor Michael Foegelle. The workshop was concluded with an introduction to RF absorber by Vince Rodriguez.

Abstract

Allium cepa seeds were exposed to 900 MHz EMF in GTEM cell at four different field strengths (10, 23, 41 and 120 Vm -1) for 2 h. The effect of longer exposure time (4 h) and modulation was also investigated. Germination rate and root length did not change significantly after EMF exposure. However, EMF at higher strengths (41 and 120 V m -1) and with modulation as well as longer exposure significantly increased mitotic index compared to corresponding controls. Percentage of mitotic abnormalities, mainly consisting of laggards, anaphase bridges, C-mitosis, vagrants and unequal distribution, increased at all given field conditions.

Abstract

Unlabelled: ♦, Background: Peginesatide is a novel, synthetic, peptide-based pegylated erythropoiesis-stimulating agent that is designed specifically to stimulate the erythropoietin receptor. The purpose of the present study was to assess, for the first time, the efficacy and safety of peginesatide in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) and previously on epoetin treatment. ♦, Methods: In this open-label multicenter study, 59 PD patients with CKD were converted from epoetin (alfa or beta) to once-monthly peginesatide. Doses were titrated to maintain hemoglobin levels between 10 g/dL and 12 g/dL during the 25 weeks of the study. The primary endpoint was change from baseline in mean hemoglobin values during the evaluation period (weeks 20 - 25). ♦, Results: The mean hemoglobin value during the evaluation period was 11.3 ± 1.07 g/dL, and the mean change from baseline was 0.10 ± 1.15 g/dL (95% confidence limits: -0.24, 0.44 g/dL). During the evaluation period, most patients maintained hemoglobin levels between 10 g/dL and 12 g/dL (63.0%) and within ±1.0 g/dL of baseline (60.9%). The median weekly epoetin dose at baseline was 96.0 U/kg, and the median starting peginesatide dose was 0.047 mg/kg. Forty-three patients (72.9%) completed the study. Six patients (10.2%) received red blood cell transfusions. The observed adverse event profile was consistent with underlying conditions in the PD patient population. The most common adverse event was peritonitis (20.3%), a complication commonly associated with PD. Four deaths occurred during the study (2 related to septic shock, and 1 each to myocardial ischemia and myasthenia gravis). ♦, Conclusions: In this study, once-monthly peginesatide maintained hemoglobin levels in PD patients after conversion from epoetin., (Copyright © 2015 International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis.)
