We review the use of leaf area metrics (LAM) for assessing and managing dryland forests. We propose a framework integrating individual tree to whole-ecosystem metrics representing a variety of forest features and review theory, empirical evidence and knowledge gaps. Four basic concepts underlie the LAM framework: (1) Max-LAI - an ecosystem can be characterized by an upper potential leaf area index (LAI) dictated mainly by water availability, (2) Leaf area distribution - the distribution of leaf area is proportional to the distribution of resources among vegetation components, (3) Safe-LAI - maintaining Ecosystem-LAI below Max-LAI is a way to reduce drought stress and (4) tree leaf area (TLA) - the leaf area of an individual tree as a proportion of its potential TLA, represents its vigour. Implementation of the LAM strategy requires the following: (1) better understanding how edaphic conditions and vegetation characteristics interact with climate in determining Max-LAI, (2) better understanding how leaf area is related to water use across species, vegetation strata and light regimes, (3) better understanding the interaction between LAI development and stand dynamics, (4) better capability of measuring or estimating individual tree leaf area and (5) development of species-specific references for tree vigour based on leaf area. The LAM strategy is promising for managing dryland forests under increasing drought stress.

Condensed Matter - Quantum Gases - Abstract
We propose a detailed experimental procedure for preparing relativistic vortices, governed by the nonlinear Dirac equation, in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a honeycomb optical lattice. Our setup contains Dirac points, in direct analogy to graphene. We determine a range of practical values for all relevant physical parameters needed to realize relativistic vortices in a BEC of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. Seven distinct vortex types, including Anderson-Toulouse and Mermin-Ho skyrmion textures and half-quantum vortices, are obtained, and their discrete spectra and stability properties are calculated in a weak harmonic trap. We predict that most vortices are stable with a lifetime between $1$ and $10$ seconds., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Condensed Matter - Quantum Gases - Abstract
We have measured the interaction energy and three-body recombination rate for a two-component Fermi gas near a narrow Feshbach resonance and found both to be strongly energy dependent. Even for deBroglie wavelengths greatly exceeding the van der Waals length scale, the behavior of the interaction energy as a function of temperature cannot be described by atoms interacting via a contact potential. Rather, energy-dependent corrections beyond the scattering length approximation are required, indicating a resonance with an anomalously large effective range. For fields where the molecular state is above threshold, the rate of three-body recombination is enhanced by a sharp, two-body resonance arising from the closed-channel molecular state which can be magnetically tuned through the continuum. This narrow resonance can be used to study strongly correlated Fermi gases that simultaneously have a sizeable effective range and a large scattering length., Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We observe enhanced three-body recombination in an ultracold three-component $^6$Li Fermi gas with large but unequal scattering lengths attributable to an excited Efimov trimer state near the three-atom scattering threshold. We find excellent agreement between the measured three-body recombination rate and the recombination rate calculated in the zero-range approximation where the only free parameters are the Efimov parameters $\kappa_*$ and $\eta_*$. The value of $\kappa_*$ determined by the location of the Efimov resonance we observe at 895 G also predicts the locations of loss features previously observed near 130 and 500 G \cite{Jochim08,OHara09} suggesting that all three features are associated with universal Efimov trimer states. We also report on the first realization of a quantum degenerate three-state Fermi gas with approximate SU(3) symmetry., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We investigate the stability of a three spin state mixture of ultracold fermionic $^6$Li atoms over a range of magnetic fields encompassing three Feshbach resonances. For most field values, we attribute decay of the atomic population to three-body processes involving one atom from each spin state and find that the three-body loss coefficient varies by over four orders of magnitude. We observe high stability when at least two of the three scattering lengths are small, rapid loss near the Feshbach resonances, and two unexpected resonant loss features. At our highest fields, where all pairwise scattering lengths are approaching $a_t = -2140 a_0$, we measure a three-body loss coefficient $L_3 \simeq 5\times 10^{-22} \mathrm{cm}^6/\mathrm{s}$ and a trend toward lower decay rates for higher fields indicating that future studies of color superfluidity and trion formation in a SU(3) symmetric Fermi gas may be feasible.

We propose a method to prepare a sample of fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice at unprecedentedly low temperatures and uniform filling factors. The process involves adiabatic loading of atoms into multiple energy bands of an optical lattice followed by a filtering stage whereby atoms from all but the ground band are removed. Of critical importance is the use of a non-harmonic trapping potential, taken here to be the radial profile of a high-order Laguerre-Gaussian laser beam, to provide external confinement for the atoms. For realistic experimental parameters, this procedure should produce samples with temperatures $\sim10^{-3}$ of the Fermi temperature. This would allow the investigation of the low-temperature phase diagram of the Fermi-Hubbard model as well as the initialization of a high-fidelity quantum register., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report the observation of strongly damped dipole oscillations of a quantum degenerate 1D atomic Bose gas in a combined harmonic and optical lattice potential. Damping is significant for very shallow axial lattices (0.25 photon recoil energies), and increases dramatically with increasing lattice depth, such that the gas becomes nearly immobile for times an order of magnitude longer than the single-particle tunneling time. Surprisingly, we see no broadening of the atomic quasimomentum distribution after damped motion. Recent theoretical work suggests that quantum fluctuations can strongly damp dipole oscillations of 1D atomic Bose gas, providing a possible explanation for our observations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate correlation properties of a one-dimensional interacting Bose gas by loading a magnetically trapped 87-Rb Bose-Einstein condensate into a deep two-dimensional optical lattice. We measure the three-body recombination rate for both the BEC in the magnetic trap and the BEC loaded into the optical lattice. The recombination rate coefficient is a factor of seven smaller in the lattice, which we interpret as a reduction in the local three-body correlation function in the 1D case. This is a signature of correlation intermediate between that of the uncorrelated phase coherent 1D mean-field regime and the strongly correlated Tonks-Girardeau regime., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

We derive the elastic collision rate for a harmonically-trapped Fermi gas in the extreme unitarity limit where the s-wave scattering cross section is $\sigma (k) =4\pi/k^2$, with $\hbar k$ the relative momentum. The collision rate is given in the form $\Gamma=\gamma I(T/T_F)$--the product of a universal collision rate $\gamma =k_B T_F/(6 \pi \hbar)$ and a dimensionless function of the ratio of the temperature $T$ to the Fermi temperature $T_F$. We find $I$ has a peak value of $\simeq4.6$ at $T/T_F\simeq0.4$, $I\simeq 82 (T/T_F)^2$ for $T/T_F\leq 0.15$, and $I\simeq 2(T_F/T)^2$ for $T/T_F>1.5$. We estimate the collision rate for recent experiments on a strongly-interacting degenerate Fermi gas of atoms., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revTeX4, submitted to PRA

A strongly-attractive, two-component Fermi gas of atoms exhibits universal behavior and should be mechanically stable as a consequence of the quantum mechanical requirement of unitarity. This requirement limits the maximum attractive force to a value smaller than that of the outward Fermi pressure. To experimentally demonstrate this stability, we use all-optical methods to produce a highly degenerate, two-component gas of $^6$Li atoms in an applied magnetic field near a Feshbach resonance, where strong interactions are observed. We find that the gas is stable at densities far exceeding that predicted previously for the onset of mechanical instability. Further, we provide a temperature-corrected measurement of an important, universal, many-body parameter which determines the stability--the mean field contribution to the chemical potential in units of the local Fermi energy., Comment: 5 pages RevTeX4, 2 figures, 1 table. We report on the observation of a highly-degenerate, strongly-interacting Fermi gas of atoms. Fermionic $^6$Li atoms in an optical trap are evaporatively cooled to degeneracy using a magnetic field to induce strong, resonant interactions. Upon abruptly releasing the cloud from the trap, the gas is observed to expand rapidly in the transverse direction while remaining nearly stationary in the axial. We interpret the expansion dynamics in terms of collisionless superfluid and collisional hydrodynamics. For the data taken at the longest evaporation times, we find that collisional hydrodynamics does not provide a satisfactory explanation, while superfluidity is plausible., Comment: 5 pages. We measure a zero crossing in the scattering length of a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of 6-Li. To locate the zero crossing, we monitor the decrease in temperature and atom number arising from evaporation in a CO2 laser trap as a function of magnetic field B. The temperature decrease and atom loss are minimized for B=528(4) G, consistent with no evaporation. We also present preliminary calculations using potentials that have been constrained by the measured zero crossing and locate a broad Feshbach resonance at approximately 860 G, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions. In addition, our theoretical model predicts a second and much narrower Feshbach resonance near 550 G., Comment: Five pages, four figures

We achieve degeneracy in a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of $^6$Li by direct evaporation in a CO$_2$ laser trap, yielding the first all-optically produced degenerate Fermi gas. More than $10^5$ atoms are confined at temperatures below $4 \mu$K at full trap depth, where the Fermi temperature for each state is $8 \mu$K. We use an all-optical trap to confine a strongly attractive two-state mixture of lithium fermions. By measuring the rate of evaporation from the trap, we determine the effective elastic scattering cross section (4 PI a^2) to show that the magnitude of the scattering length |a| is very large, in agreement with predictions. We show that the mixture is stable against inelastic decay provided that a small bias magnetic field is applied. For this system, the s-wave interaction is widely tunable at low magnetic field, and can be turned on and off rapidly via a Raman PI pulse. Hence, this mixture is well suited for fundamental studies of an interacting Fermi gas., Comment: 4 pages using REVTeX, 3 eps figures

We demonstrate an ultrastable CO2 laser trap that provides tight confinement of neutral atoms with negligible optical scattering and minimal laser-noise- induced heating. Using this method, fermionic 6Li atoms are stored in a 0.4 mK deep well with a 1/e trap lifetime of 300 sec, consistent with a background pressure of 10^(-11) Torr. To our knowledge, this is the longest storage time ever achieved with an all-optical trap, comparable to the best reported magnetic traps., Comment: 4 pages using REVTeX, 1 eps figure

BRII recipient: O'Hara - Abstract
Fire is a major component of the disturbance regime and a critical determinant of competitive outcomes in many ecosystems. In forests dominated by coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), fire was frequent and ubiquitous prior to European settlement, but fires have been exceedingly small and rare over the last 70–80 years because of aggressive fire prevention and suppression policies. As a result, many aspects of redwood fire ecology remain poorly understood. However, in 2008 a single storm ignited numerous fires throughout the redwood region, providing a rare opportunity to conduct replicated fire effects research. One year post-fire, we investigated competitive dynamics by quantifying bole survival and basal sprouting, for redwood and associated species, at four field sites that spanned much of the latitudinal range of redwood and encompassed (1) second-growth and old-growth stands, (2) burned and unburned areas, and (3) a wide range of fire severities. We employed a mixed effects analytical framework and found that: (1) the probability of bole survival was greater for redwood than for its primary competitor (tanoak; Notholithocarpus densiflorus), (2) this divergence was much more pronounced at higher fire severities, and (3) tanoak exhibited a slight advantage in terms of post-fire basal sprouting, but the dominance of tanoak basal sprouts in burned areas was reduced relative to unburned areas. For many disturbance types in many ecosystems, the empirical data necessary for effective management decisions are lacking, and studies incorporating vegetative tree regeneration are especially scarce. Our work demonstrates the importance of utilizing unique field research opportunities to test current theories, while unequivocally documenting that fires of all severities increased the abundance of redwood relative to tanoak, and that higher severity fires more strongly favored redwood.

- Abstract
Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.) trees in different canopy strata and crown positions were sampled to develop relationships between sapwood cross-sectional area and projected leaf area. Sampling occurred during the summers of 2000 and 2001 and covered tree heights ranging from 7.7 to 45.2 m and diameters at breast height ranging from 9.4 to 92.7 cm. Foliage morphology varied greatly and was stratified into five types based on needle type (sun or shade) and twig color. A strong linear relationship existed between projected leaf area and sapwood area at breast height or sapwood at the base of the live crown despite the variability in foliage morphology. Ratios of leaf area to sapwood were 0.40 m(2)/cm(2) at breast height and 0.57 m(2)/cm(2) at crown base. Measurements of sapwood at the base of the live crown improved leaf area predictions because of sapwood taper below the crown base. A sapwood taper model was also developed.

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives., publishedVersion

This volume targets the issue of how data-driven agency affects everyday life and everyday law, highlighting potential transformations of human agency and the emergence of new types of human-machine hybrid intelligence. Human agency will be considered as depending – in part – on the affordances of our technological environment, meaning that insofar as modern law assumes a specific type of human agency, we cannot take for granted that this assumption will survive the era of data-driven information and communication infrastructures. This invites a reflection on ‘the political’ in the realm of algorithmic systems that act on the feedback they gain from their sensors and/or other data input. Are we moving towards a driverless democracy that overcomes old school notions such as sovereignty, or will a driverless democracy result in a clueless form of ungovernment? Shall we lose track of the values and institutions that we need to preserve if we wish to survive the scaling of personalized manipulation in the realm of public debate? And what if a driverless law arrives to overdetermine the choice architecture of our machinic environments?

This chapter contains a crossing of swords and thoughts between the editors, who come from different disciplinary backgrounds and different philosophical traditions, but nevertheless occupy much common ground. The conversation is too short to enable the cutting edge of Occam’s razor (pun intended), but refers to other work with more extensive argumentation. We agree on a great deal. In particular, we share a precautionary approach that requires proactive consideration of how one’s experimental business models or progressive politics may impact others. However, as the reader will see, at that point we part company! The ensuing dialogue has been illuminating for us, and hopefully will whet the reader’s appetite for the excellent chapters that follow. Topics discussed are: the Onlife world; legal protection by design; data, knowledge and information; affordances; the digital unconscious; the mode of existence of modern positive law; conservatism and the quest to preserve plurality and natality.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is defined as Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 14 or 15. Despite good outcomes, patients are commonly transferred to trauma centers for observation and/or neurosurgical consultation. The aim of this study is to assess the value of redefining mTBI with novel radiographic criteria to determine the appropriateness of interhospital transfer for neurosurgical evaluation.A retrospective study of patients with blunt head injury with GCS 13-15 and CT head from Jan 2014-Dec 2016 was performed. A novel criteria of head CT findings was created at our institution to classify mTBI. Outcomes included neurosurgical intervention and transfer cost.A total of 2120 patients were identified with 1442 (68.0%) meeting CT criteria for mTBI and 678 (32.0%) classified high risk. Two (0.14%) patients with mTBI required neurosurgical intervention compared with 143 (21.28%) high risk TBI (p 0.0001). Mean age (55.8 years), and anticoagulation (2.6% vs 2.8%) or antiplatelet use (2.1% vs 3.0%) was similar between groups (p 0.05). Of patients with mTBI, 689 were transferred without receiving neurosurgical intervention. Given an average EMS transfer cost of $700 for ground and $5800 for air, we estimate an unnecessary transfer cost of $733,600.Defining mTBI with the described novel criteria clearly identifies patients who can be safely managed without transfer for neurosurgical consultation. These unnecessary transfers represent a substantial financial and resource burden to the trauma system and inconvenience to patients.

Spacecraft Propulsion And Power - Abstract
A system reliability approach is discussed which is based on a quantitative assessment of both the engine system and hardware reliability during the design process. The approach makes it possible to evaluate design trades as the design matures. It is concluded that the system reliability assessment approach offers the following benefits. The uncertainty of each design variable is explicitly considered in the analysis process. The most significant design variables are ranked in order of their effect on reliability. Design trades can be assessed for reliability impact. It is concluded that the approach facilitates communication between disciplines and thus aids in concurrent engineering.

This study explored the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and current contraception use among ever-married women in Jordan. Analysing a sample (n = 3434) from the 2007 Jordan demographic and health survey, women who reported ever experiencing severe physical violence from their husband were significantly less likely to use contraception than women who did not report severe physical violence (OR = 0.34). Conversely, women who reported ever experiencing sexual IPV were significantly more likely to use contraception (OR = 1.50). Emotional and less severe physical IPV were not significantly related to contraception use. Education, wealth, age, number of children, and fertility preferences were positively associated with contraception use, while residence in the Badia area and consanguineous marriages were negatively associated with contraception use. The findings have implications for the provision of IPV screening and contraception services in Jordan, as well as the specification of services for women most vulnerable to IPV.
