The substance of human development is essentially the life stories of individuals. Often, personal historical reflection can provide a solid basis for the study of how choices and transitions occur throughout life. Thirty elderly nuns were interviewed in three one-hour sessions each to explore the various common themes in the lives of these ''women religious.'' Among the themes discussed were childhood events, how and when they ''heard the call,'' commitment, old age, and legacy. The lives of three such women are summarized in this article to emphasize how in each case, the ''call'' was as much a spiritual decision as a career one. The ensuing lifelong commitment of these women is seen as providing satisfaction in old age, in the knowledge of having made the right choice. It is noted by the author that such examination of subjective experience can lead to a better understanding of the course of human life.
