Binocular disparity provides critical information about three-dimensional (3D) structures to support perception and action. In the past decade significant progress has been made in uncovering human brain areas engaged in the processing of binocular disparity signals. Yet, the fine-scale brain processing underlying 3D perception remains unknown. Here, we use ultra-high-field (7T) functional imaging at submillimeter resolution to examine fine-scale BOLD fMRI signals involved in 3D perception. In particular, we sought to interrogate the local circuitry involved in disparity processing by sampling fMRI responses at different positions relative to the cortical surface (i.e., across cortical depths corresponding to layers). We tested for representations related to 3D perception by presenting participants (male and female, N = 8) with stimuli that enable stable stereoscopic perception [i.e., correlated random dot stereograms (RDS)] versus those that do not (i.e., anticorrelated RDS). Using multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA), we demonstrate cortical depth-specific representations in areas V3A and V7 as indicated by stronger pattern responses for correlated than for anticorrelated stimuli in upper rather than deeper layers. Examining informational connectivity, we find higher feedforward layer-to-layer connectivity for correlated than anticorrelated stimuli between V3A and V7. Further, we observe disparity-specific feedback from V3A to V1 and from V7 to V3A. Our findings provide evidence for the role of V3A as a key nexus for disparity processing, which is implicated in feedforward and feedback signals related to the perceptual estimation of 3D structures. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Binocular vision plays a significant role in supporting our interactions with the surrounding environment. The fine-scale neural mechanisms that underlie the brain9s skill in extracting 3D structures from binocular signals are poorly understood. Here, we capitalize on recent advances in ultra-high-field functional imaging to interrogate human brain circuits involved in 3D perception at submillimeter resolution. We provide evidence for the role of area V3A as a key nexus for disparity processing, which is implicated in feedforward and feedback signals related to the perceptual estimation of 3D structures from binocular signals. These fine-scale measurements help bridge the gap between animal neurophysiology and human fMRI studies investigating cross-scale circuits, from micro circuits to global brain networks for 3D perception.

However, data are sparse regarding the details of these patients in a multinational and large scale. Methods: We conducted a multinational observational study on features of consecutive acute ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and cerebral venous or sinus thrombosis among SARS-CoV-2–infected patients. We further investigated the risk of large vessel occlusion, stroke severity as measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, and stroke subtype as measured by the TOAST (Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) criteria among patients with acute ischemic stroke. In addition, we explored the neuroimaging findings, features of patients who were asymptomatic for SARS-CoV-2 infection at stroke onset, and the impact of geographic regions and countries’ health expenditure on outcomes. Results: Among the 136 tertiary centers of 32 countries who participated in this study, 71 centers from 17 countries had at least 1 eligible stroke patient. Of 432 patients included, 323 (74.8%) had acute ischemic stroke, 91 (21.1%) intracranial hemorrhage, and 18 (4.2%) cerebral venous or sinus thrombosis. The synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties are reported for three novel mixed-valence tetranuclear [MnII2MnIII2(HBuDea)2(BuDea)2(EBA)4] (1), [MnII2MnIII2(HBuDea)2(BuDea)2(DMBA)4] (2) and undecanuclear [MnII3MnIII8O4(OH)2(BuDea)6(DMBA)8] (3) clusters, where H2BuDea is N-butyldiethanolamine, HEBA is 2-ethylbutyric acid and HDMBA is 2,2-dimethylbutyric acid. The compounds have been prepared through self-assembly reactions of manganese(ii) chloride with H2BuDea and respective carboxylic acid in methanol solution in air, affording 1 with HEBA, and 2 or 3 with HDMBA, depending on the experimental conditions. The single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that 1 and 2 have similar centrosymmetric structures based on the {M4(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} core, while 3 discloses the unprecedented {M11(μ-O)4(μ3-O)12} one. The Mn4 complexes display single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with a S = 9 spin ground state and a high energy barrier Ueff/kB of up to 51 K. The magnetic properties of 2 are successfully modeled with JMnIII-MnIII/hc = 25.7 cm-1 and two JMnIII-MnII/hc constants of 3.1 and -0.93 cm-1 (data correspond to the Ĥ = -Jŝ1·ŝ2 formalism). The Mn11 cluster exhibits a paramagnetic behavior with dominant antiferromagnetic coupling. A possible influence of intermolecular effects and of different peripheries of the magnetic cores designed by using 2-ethylbutyrate (in 1) or 2,2-dimethylbutyrate (in 2) on the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 is discussed. The experimental magnetostructural correlations for the {MnII2MnIII2(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} cores, supported by broken symmetry DFT calculations, disclose the X-MnIIIMnIII angle and MnIII-O distance (where MnIII-X and MnIII-O are axial Jahn-Teller bonds) as the structural factors having the strongest influence on JMnIII-MnIII exchange coupling. It is shown that two JMnIII-MnII constants are necessary for the correct description of magnetic exchange couplings in the {MnII2MnIII2(μ3-O)2(μ-O)4} tetranuclear unit.

Resumo A peritonite esclerosante encapsulante e uma doença rara e insidiosa associada a espessamento e fibrose peritoneal, afectando sobretudo doentes com historial de dialise peritoneal. Uma evolução clínica desfavorável com encarceramento de ansas intestinais culmina numa taxa de mortalidade de 25%-55%. Apresenta-se homem de 47 anos, com antecedentes de doença renal crónica previamente sob diálise peritoneal. Avaliado no serviço de urgência por febre, anorexia e ascite com 1 semana de evolução. Laboratorialmente referia-se elevação dos parÂmetros inflamatórios. Radiologicamente documentou-se ascite não pura septada, com espessamento do peritoneu e compressão de ansas intestinais. A paracentese foi compatível com ascite hematica exsudativa. Após início de tamoxifeno e corticoterapia, verificou-se melhoria clínica significativa e redução da ascite e do espessamento peritoneal em tomografia computorizada abdominal. Neste trabalho descreve-se uma complicação rara e potencialmente fatal da diálise peritoneal. Visto cursar com manifestações e achados inespecíficos, exige uma avaliação clínica meticulosa em casos suspeitos.

The rate of mechanical thrombectomy was significantly lower in countries with lower health expenditures.

Adapting to the environment statistics by reducing brain responses to repetitive sensory information is key for efficient information processing. Yet, the fine-scale computations that support this adaptive processing in the human brain remain largely unknown. Here, we capitalize on the sub-millimetre resolution afforded by ultra-high field imaging to examine BOLD-fMRI signals across cortical depth and discern competing hypotheses about the brain mechanisms (feedforward vs. feedback) that mediate adaptive visual processing. We demonstrate suppressive recurrent processing within visual cortex, as indicated by stronger BOLD decrease in superficial than middle and deeper layers for gratings that were repeatedly presented at the same orientation. Further, we show dissociable connectivity mechanisms for adaptive processing: enhanced feedforward connectivity within visual cortex, while feedback occipito-parietal connectivity, reflecting top-down influences on visual processing. Our findings provide evidence for a circuit of local recurrent and feedback interactions that mediate rapid brain plasticity for adaptive information processing.

Three new 6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde-thiosemicarbazones-N-4-substituted pro-ligands and their Cu(II) complexes (1, -NH2, 2, -NHMe, 3, -NHEt) have been prepared and characterized. In both the X-ray structures of 1 and 3, two crystallographically independent complex molecules were found that differ either in the nature of weakly metal-binding species (water in 1a and nitrate in 1b) or in the co-ligand (water in 3a and methanol in 3b). Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements carried out on complexes 1 and 3 confirmed the presence of such different species in the solution. The electrochemical behavior of the pro-ligands and of the complexes was investigated, as well as their biological activity. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibited a high cytotoxicity against human tumor cells and 3D spheroids derived from solid tumors, related to the high cellular uptake. Complexes 2 and 3 also showed a high selectivity towards cancerous cell lines with respect to non-cancerous cell lines and were able to circumvent cisplatin resistance. Via the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging technique, preliminary insights into the biological activity of copper complexes were obtained.

Learning and experience are critical for making successful decisions in the face of inherently ambiguous and noisy information. Yet, the human brain computations that mediate this perceptual learning skill remain highly debated, as fMRI at standard resolution does not allow us to discern whether learning alters sensory encoding or top-down influences. Here, we capitalize on the sub-millimetre resolution of ultra-high field imaging to interrogate the finer-scale computations that mediate perceptual learning in the human brain. Combining 7T laminar imaging with orientation discrimination training, we demonstrate learning-dependent changes in superficial V1 layers, suggesting that training alters read-out rather than input signals in the visual cortex. Further, training enhances feedforward connectivity between superficial V1 layers and middle layers of posterior parietal cortex. Our findings propose that the brain learns to translate sensory information to perceptual decisions via recurrent processing within visual cortex and enhanced connectivity from sensory to decision-related areas.

International business scholars have recognized the importance of the contextual embeddedness of firms. However, how they matter remains a contested question. Although recent efforts have been made to review the field, it remains unclear how institutions affect firms’ performance. We aim at answering the following research question: How is the intellectual and the conceptual structure of the institutions and firms’ performance field defined? We searched in the WoS and Scopus databases with pre-determined keywords, and we obtained a sample of 1063 articles that we analyzed by conducting the citation and co-citation analyses, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and thematic map analysis. Our bibliometric results portrayed how the intellectual and conceptual structure of the field has evolved. We contribute to the international business literature by providing a one-stop overview of the field, thus identifying current accomplishments and future research avenues on the relationship between institutions and firms’ performance. By analyzing the articles included on the Emerging and Niche clusters, we discuss future research avenues on the topics of sustainability, entrepreneurship, political ties, and institutional quality.

Further, learning increases feedforward rather than feedback layer-to-layer connectivity in occipito-parietal regions, suggesting that sensory plasticity gates perceptual decisions.
