5. Properties of bioactive ingredient in jellyfish collagen.

Abstract

Collagen was previously derived from bovine and porcine sources, but its usage is restricted due to its expensive cost, halal issue, and potential allergic reaction. This work utilized the soluble acid collagen (ASC) method to extract bioactive collagen components from commercial jellyfish captured from the Port Klang area in Malaysia, and 20% collagen yield from jellyfish was successfully extracted (based on the wet weight basis). The jellyfish collagen was confirmed to be type II collagen, which is made up of one α and one β chain, as confirmed by the SDS-PAGE pattern. The molecular weight of the α chain was 140 kDa. The amino acid composition in jellyfish collagen was identical to chicken foot type II collagen. The transition temperature (Tmax) of jellyfish collagen was obtained at 32°C, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy determines five significant collagen peaks: Amide A, Amide B, Amide I, Amide II, and Amide III, demonstrating the structure of jellyfish collagen. From the potential zeta study, the jellyfish collagen is stable up to pH nine, and the jellyfish collagen starts to denature at higher pH. Based on these findings, jellyfish collagen has a high potential to replace conventional bovine and porcine-based collagen as a sustainable and safer source of collagen for usage in various industries, especially in the nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals industries. Abstract

Lemongrass with scientific name Cymbopogon citratrus was widely found in tropical country. The aroma scent released by the lemongrass able to relieve anxiety and rejuvenate us. Lemongrass oil is suitable to use as one of the car freshener ingredient. However, the oil is easily evaporating when expose to high temperature environment. In order to preserve the fragrance release, the objective of this study is to formulate the nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) encapsulated lemongrass oil using the ultrasonication technique. The characterization of the NLC-Lemongrass were particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, efficiency of the loading and the release rate. The NLC-Lemongrass oil formulation had an average mean particle size of 43.86 nm, PDI of 0.28, zeta potential -42.9 mV and efficiency of the loading 82.13 %, respectively. In addition, after 25 d, the component of the lemongrass oil inside the NLC able to remain at 53.24 %. Therefore, the NLC was successfully encapsulate the lemongrass oil and prolong the aroma release at high temperature environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Phytochemicals have shown potentials in preventing and treating various lung diseases, including asthma and lung cancer. However, their use has been hampered by limitations such as poor water solubility and instability. Nanoformulations, which include organic nanoparticles (e.g. liposomes) and inorganic nanoparticles (e.g. gold/silver nanoparticles) have potential to enhance drug solubility and subsequently increase their absorption and bioavailability. These drug formulations can be administered via various routes such as oral, intravenous, and pulmonary. This review highlights the potential of some phytochemicals in managing lung diseases and discusses the mechanism of actions of these phytochemicals and the impact of using the nanoformulations to deliver phytochemicals, particularly through pulmonary route. While pre-clinical studies have shown promising therapeutic activities of phytochemicals-loaded nanoformulations, further research is required. In conclusion, the application of phytochemicals and nanoformulations as drug delivery systems could be a promising approach to facilitate optimal therapy for lung diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
