Leafy vegetables are among the potential foods that can combat food insecurity in developing countries. Their major drawback is a short shelf life, which limits their supply chain and is commonly associated with their high metabolic activities. Leafy vegetables have a high water content, which determines their freshness. Moisture loss through respiration and transpiration at postharvest storage is one quality attribute that leads to rapid quality deterioration. Little has been carried out in studying the mechanisms associated with the quality deterioration of leafy vegetables; however, understanding these mechanisms may aid in developing effective preservation measures. Furthermore, recent literature reviews that focus on discussing the mechanisms that lead to quality loss in leafy vegetables are scarce. The current paper aims to review the physiological and biochemical processes associated with quality deterioration in leafy vegetables. The respiration, ethylene production, moisture loss, colour, and texture are highly associated with the quality deterioration of fresh produce and, thus will be discussed critically in selected leafy vegetables, namely: broccoli and Swiss chard. The findings from this review indicate that the quality deterioration in leafy vegetables is primarily enzymatic. Disposing of banana peels (BPs) as bio-organic waste is an environmental challenge. Rich in potassium, BPs are often discarded despite their agricultural value. Reports on the valorization of BP are increasing, but no review has focused on BP fertilizer preparation methods. This study aims to review and analyze these methods to guide researchers and agriculturists in optimizing BP utilization, promoting sustainable waste management, and effective agricultural practices. This review has uncovered significant findings. A composite of banana and orange peels emerged as the most favoured and widely used approach, closely followed by dried BPs. This study highlighted the substantial impact of fertilizer application methods such as top and basal dressing. Most of the results revealed that the peels significantly improved the growth parameters of various plants. However, for biochar, the plant height was insignificant between treatments, further emphasizing the importance of the application method used. Banana peels are a valuable resource for biofertilizer synthesis. The banana–orange peel composite exhibits outstanding fertilizer properties. The physical properties of nano-fertilizers (NFs) are important in determining their performance, efficacy, and environmental interactions. Nano-fertilizers, due to their small size and high surface area-to-volume ratio, enhance plant metabolic reactions, resulting in higher crop yields. The properties of nano-fertilizers depend on the synthesis methods used. The nanoparticle’s nutrient use efficiency (NUE) varies among plant species. This review aims to analyze the relationship between the physical properties of NF and their influence on crop performance and nutrient uptake efficiency. The review focuses on the physical properties of NFs, specifically their size, shape, crystallinity, and agglomeration. This review found that smaller particle-sized nanoparticles exhibit higher nutrient use efficiency than larger particles. Nano-fertilizer-coated additives gradually release nutrients, reducing the need for frequent application and addressing limitations associated with chemical fertilizer utilization. The shapes of nano-fertilizers have varying effects on the overall performance of plants. The crystalline structure of nanoparticles promotes a slow release of nutrients. Amorphous nano-fertilizers improve the NUE and, ultimately, crop yield. Agglomeration results in nanoparticles losing their nanoscale size, accumulating on the outer surface, and becoming unavailable to plants.
