The prognosis of patients with connective tissue disease (CTD) has improved significantly in recent years, but interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with connective tissue disease (CTD-ILD) remains a refractory condition, which is a leading cause of mortality. Because it is an important prognostic factor, many observational and interventional studies have been conducted to date. However, CTD is a heterogeneous group of conditions, which makes the clinical course, treatment responses, and prognosis of CTD-ILD extremely diverse. To summarize the current understanding and unsolved questions, the Japanese Respiratory Society and the Japan College of Rheumatology collaborated to publish the world's first guide focusing on CTD-ILD, based on the evidence and expert consensus of pulmonologists and rheumatologists, along with radiologists, pathologists, and dermatologists. The task force members proposed a total of 27 items, including 7 for general topics, 9 for disease-specific topics, 3 for complications, 4 for pharmacologic treatments, and 4 for non-pharmacologic therapies, with teams of 2-4 authors and reviewers for each item to prepare a consensus statement based on a systematic literature review. Subsequently, public opinions were collected from members of both societies, and a critical review was conducted by external reviewers. Finally, the task force finalized the guide upon discussion and consensus generation. This guide is expected to contribute to the standardization of CTD-ILD medical care and is also useful as a tool for promoting future research by clarifying unresolved issues.

Aim To evaluate subclinical left ventricular (LV) regional dysfunction in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) using feature tracking cardiac magnetic resonance (FT-CMR) imaging and to identify pSS characteristics independently associated with LV regional dysfunction. Method Fifty patients with pSS and 20 controls without cardiovascular disease underwent non-contrast CMR imaging. Labial gland biopsy was performed in 42 patients (84%). Disease activity was assessed using the European League Against Rheumatism Sjogren's syndrome disease activity index (ESSDAI). LV global longitudinal strain (GLS), global circumferential strain (GCS), and global radial strain (GRS) were measured using FT-CMR. Results No significant differences in cardiovascular risk factors were found between the pSS group and controls. The pSS group had significantly lower GLS (P = .015) and GCS (P = .008) than the control group. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that GCS was significantly associated with Raynaud's phenomenon (P = .015), focus score ≥2 (P = .032), and total ESSDAI score ≥8 (P = .029). Conclusion FT-CMR can reveal subclinical LV regional dysfunction in patients with pSS without cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, patients with pSS and Raynaud's phenomenon, a focus score ≥2, or an ESSDAI score ≥8 were considered to be at high risk for myocardial dysfunction.

A 26-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and progressive paralysis in the lower limbs. She had a history of bronchial asthma and experienced sinusitis, progressive peripheral neuropathy, polyarthritis, and leukocytosis with prominent eosinophilia. The patient was diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Abdominal pain was considered to be an ischaemic enteritis associated with EGPA. She was administered 1,000 mg/day of methylprednisolone for 3 days and intravenous immunoglobulin (400 mg/kg/day of γ-globulin for 5 days) followed by 50 mg (1 mg/kg)/day of oral prednisolone due to rapidly progressing peripheral neuropathy. Her symptoms temporarily improved; however, peripheral neuropathy recurred after a week, and the eosinophil count increased. Eighteen days after following the resumed treatment, 300 mg of mepolizumab, a humanised monoclonal antibody, was administered. Subjective symptoms, nerve conduction velocity, and skin perfusion pressure (an index of peripheral circulation in the lower extremities) improved after 4 weeks. Although mepolizumab has been approved for EGPA, there is no evidence of its efficacy against peripheral neuropathy. Early introduction of mepolizumab may contribute to an the early improved progressive peripheral neuropathy with eosinophilia.

We report photothermal phase separation of aqueous poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)/1-butanol (BuOH) solutions by focused 1064 nm laser irradiation and subsequent single microparticle formation in the solution. The single microparticle [diameter = ∼10 μm and volume = ∼picoliter (pL)] produced by laser irradiation was optically trapped by the incident 1064 nm laser beam, and this enabled us in situ Raman/fluorescence microspectroscopies of the particle. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the particle produced by laser irradiation was composed of PNIPAM and BuOH. In the presence of rhodamine B (RhB) in the solution, RhB was distributed from the water phase to the PNIPAM/BuOH microparticle produced by laser irradiation, as confirmed by fluorescence microspectroscopy. Laser-induced distribution/extraction of RhB to a single PNIPAM/BuOH microparticle was shown to be possible at the RhB concentration as low as 10-14 mol/dm3, where the RhB fluorescence intensity from the particle showed a step-by-step increase by every ∼3 min laser irradiation. This is the first demonstration of laser-induced simultaneous extraction and detection of single RhB molecules in solution.

We herein report a 60-year-old woman who experienced severe flare of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positivity following administration of the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)-type severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine. Since 40 years old, she had been in long-term remission of anti-citrullinated protein antibody-positive RA. Ten days after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, she presented with a high fever and polyarthritis, active synovitis on joint ultrasound, a clinical disease activity index of 35, and positivity for anti-early antigen, diffuse type and restricted type (EA DR) IgG and EBV deoxyribonucleic acid (EBV-DNA). Tocilizumab was introduced to treat RA. The RA disease activity disappeared, and anti-EA DR IgG and EBV-DNA became negative.

Objective.The risk of clinically manifested major cardiovascular (CV) events in primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) remains unclear. This study aimed to assess myocardial fibrosis in pSS and investigate the associated disease characteristics by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI).Methods.We performed a cross-sectional study of patients with pSS without cardiac symptoms. Labial gland biopsy was documented in 44 patients (85%). Patients without CV risk factors underwent contrast-enhanced cMRI. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was used to assess myocardial fibrosis. Myocardial edema was assessed using T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). We compared the left ventricular (LV) geometry and function between the groups with and without LGE. Further, we explored the associations of cMRI abnormalities with pSS characteristics.Results.Fifty-two women with pSS (median age 55, IQR 47.0–65.7 yrs) were enrolled in the study. LGE was observed in 10 patients (19%), two of whom showed high intensity on T2WI. High intensity on T2WI was observed in 3 patients (5.8%). LV mass index and LV mass/end-diastolic volume tended to be higher in the LGE-positive group than in the LGE-negative group (P = 0.078 and 0.093, respectively). Salivary gland focus score (FS) ≥ 3 was independently associated with LGE-positive in the multivariable analysis (OR 11.21, 95% CI 1.18–106.80).Conclusion.Subclinical myocardial fibrosis, as detected by cMRI, was frequent in patients with pSS without cardiac symptoms. Abnormal cMRI findings were associated with salivary gland FS ≥ 3.

We demonstrate the size-dependent separation and permanent immobilization of DNA on plasmonic substrates by means of plasmonic optical tweezers. We found that a gold nanopyramidal dimer array enhanced the optical force exerted on the DNA, leading to permanent immobilization of the DNA on the plasmonic substrate. The immobilization was realized by a combination of the plasmon-enhanced optical force and the thermophoretic force induced by a photothermal effect of the plasmons. In this study, we applied this phenomenon to the separation and fixation of size-different DNA. During plasmon excitation, DNA strands of different sizes became permanently immobilized on the plasmonic substrate forming micro-rings of DNA. The diameter of the ring was larger for longer DNA (in base pairs). When we used plasmonic optical tweezers to trap DNA of two different lengths dissolved in solution (φx DNA (5.4 kbp) and λ-DNA (48.5 kbp), or φx DNA and T4 DNA (166 kbp)), the DNA were immobilized, creating a double micro-ring pattern. The DNA were optically separated and immobilized in the double ring, with the shorter sized DNA and the larger one forming the smaller and larger rings, respectively. This phenomenon can be quantitatively explained as being due to a combination of the plasmon-enhanced optical force and the thermophoretic force. Our plasmonic optical tweezers open up a new avenue for the separation and immobilization of DNA, foreshadowing the emergence of optical separation and fixation of biomolecules such as proteins and other ncuelic acids.

We report the factors governing zero-magnetic-field splitting (zfs) in the lowest-energy electronically excited triplet (T1) states of cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, whose zfs energies between the lowest- (φ1) and highest-energy spin-sublevels (φ3) in the T1 states (ΔEzfs) are already known: [Pt(bhq)(dpm)] (1Pt), [Pt(thpy)(acac)] (2Pt), [Pt(ppy)(acac)] (3Pt), cis-[Pt(thpy)2 (4Pt), and cis-[Pt(ppy)2] (5Pt), where bhq, dpm, thpy, acac, and ppy are benzo[h]quinoline, dipivaloylmethane, 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine, acetylacetone, and 2-phenylpyridine, respectively. As one of the important findings, we show the relationship between the ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts of the five Pt(II) complexes. The implications of the ΔEzfs values on the emission properties of the Pt(II) complexes in acetonitrile at 293 K are also discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the radiative rate constants of the Pt(II) complexes correlate with both ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts.

New octahedral rhenium cluster complexes [{Re6Q8}(SO3)6]10- (Q = S or Se) were synthesized starting from [{Re6Q8}(H2O)4(OH)2]·12H2O. The complexes were crystallized as sodium salts and characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and elemental analyses, IR, UV/vis and luminescence spectroscopies. Magnetic relaxation data demonstrate the complex formation of the cluster units with gadolinium ions. The analysis of the magnetic relaxation rates measured at various Gd:cluster ratios and different concentrations revealed the conversion of the aggregates (Gdx[{Re6Se8}(SO3)6]y)n- into a nanoparticulate form even at x = 1 and y ≥ 1. Thus, the self-assembly of the cluster units into the nanoparticles is greatly facilitated by counterion binding with sodium cations. The concentration conditions were optimized for the formation and hydrophilization of NaxGdy[{Re6Q8}(SO3)6]-based colloids with the magnetic relaxivity values of r1(2) = 21.0(24.1) and r1(2) = 25.9(29.8) mM-1 s-1 for the {Re6S8}2+ and {Re6Se8}2+ derivatives, respectively.

Novel tetracyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with five-membered N-heteroaromatic ligands, (PPh4)2[ReN(CN)4L] [L = imidazole (Him) (2), 1-methylimidazole (Mim) (3), and pyrazole (pyz) (4)] and (PPh4)2[ReN(CN)4L]·L [L = Him (5) and Mim (6)], were synthesized by the reactions of (PPh4)2[ReN(CN)4] (1) with Him, Mim, and pyz, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The complexes 2, 3, 4, and 6 showed intense photoluminescence, with the emission quantum yields (Φem) being 0.65–0.75 in the solid state at 296 K. In contrast, the Φem and τem values of 5 are significantly smaller and shorter, respectively, than the relevant values of 2. The interconversion reactions among 1, 2, and 5 accompanied by large photoluminescence-intensity changes were accomplished by solvent-free reactions and exposure of water. The mechanochemical reaction of 2 with 1 mol equiv of Him in the solid state gave 5. Complex 5 was also obtained by the mechanochemical reaction of 1 with 2 mol equivalents of Him in the solid state. By placing solid of 5 in water, the solid showed intense photoluminescence to give 2. Complex 1 was produced under vacuum at 185 °C from 2 or 5.

Background Chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) has been reported in humanized mice after the implantation of human hematopoietic stem cells (hu-HSC). As such, humanized mice have been applied to a mouse model of chronic GVHD; however, B-cell activation and autoantibody production did not occur, and the clinical features of chronic GVHD were not sufficiently reproduced. The purpose of this study was to establish an improved humanized mouse model with chronic GVHD using HLA-DR transgenic NOD/Shi-scid, IL-2RγKO (NOG) mice. Methods CD34-positive cells were isolated from blood extracted from HLA-DRB1∗0405-positive umbilical cords using magnetic cell isolation. Then these were transplanted into NOG-Iab KO, HLA-DR 0405 Tg mice aged 8–16 weeks. GVHD symptoms were observed 26 weeks after transplantation. Histological findings of the skin, lung, liver, and spleen were compared with those of non-humanized mice. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) were measured by indirect immunofluorescence using sera isolated 26 weeks after transplantation. Results Although GVHD symptoms were not observed in humanized (hu-HSC) NOG-Iab KO, HLA-DR 0405 Tg mice during the observation period, histological findings of human T-cell infiltration were observed in the skin, liver, and lung, suggesting that GVDH was present; human tingible body macrophages or clusters of BCL-6-positive human B-cells were observed in the spleen. Furthermore, human IgG ANA with peripheral or homogeneous staining patterns were also detected in the sera. Conclusion Hu-HSC NOG-Iab KO, HLA-DR 0405 Tg mice differed from conventional models in terms of B-cell activation and ANA production. This study is the first to report on B-cell activation and autoantibody production in humanized mice with chronic GVHD, suggesting that hu-HSC NOG-Iab KO, HLA-DR 0405 Tg mice could be applied to a new humanized mouse model of chronic GVHD., Chronic GVHD, HLA-DR transgenic humanized mouse, Autoantibody, Antinuclear antibody.

Luminescent silver(I) halogenido coordination polymers [Ag2X2(PPh3)2(bpy)] n (X = I, Br, Cl) have been prepared. The iodido and bromido complexes exhibit strong blue phosphorescence assignable to the 3π-π*-excited-state of bpy, whereas the chlorido complex shows luminescence thermochromism due to the π-π*-state of bpy and charge transfer from the {Ag2Cl2} core to the bpy π*-orbital. Taking advantage of their structural similarities, we prepared a series of mixed-halogenido silver(I) complexes [Ag2(X xX'(1- x))2(PPh3)2(bpy)] n (X, X' = I, Br, Cl) at varying molar fractions as solid solutions. The mixed-halogenido complexes are as strongly luminescent as their parent complexes. The detailed study of their structure and emissive properties revealed smooth energy migration between the luminescent units and modification of the luminescence properties based on the planarity of bpy.

Reactions of [{Re6Q8}Br6]4−/3− (Q = S, Se) with molten imidazole lead to the formation of two new neutral cluster complexes [{Re6Q8}(imzH)4(imz)2] (imzH = imidazole). The interaction of [{Re6Q8}(imzH)4(imz)2] with hydrohalic acids resulted in cationic complexes [{Re6Q8}(imzH)6]X2 (X = Cl, Br). All compounds were characterised by X-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction analyses, elemental analysis, energy dispersive X-ray and IR spectroscopies. The luminescence of the neutral compounds [{Re6Q8}(imzH)4(imz)2] was also studied.

The development of water-soluble hexanuclear cluster complexes of low toxicity is a promising task due to their potential biomedical applications such as bioimaging and photodynamic therapy. Herein, we present the syntheses of two new water-soluble hexarhenium cluster complexes with terminal amphiphilic phosphine ligands, and delineate their photoluminescence and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) properties. These cluster complexes, namely [{Re6Q8}(PPh2CH2CH2COO)6]4− (Q = S (1); Se, (2)), have the least cytotoxicity among all the tested hexanuclear metal-clusters, are capable of penetrating into cells and exhibit moderate photodynamic toxicity toward Hep-2 cells.

Methylation of anionic cluster complexes [Re6Q8(CN)6]4− with ((CH3)3O)BF4 or CF3SO3CH3 afforded homoleptic isonitrile cluster complexes [Re6Q8(CH3NC)6]2+ (Q = S, Se, Te). The clusters were characterized by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 14N NMR, 15N NMR, 77Se NMR, and 125Te NMR techniques, electrochemistry, TGA, and photophysical measurements.

We report the emission properties of the octahedral hexamolybdenum(II) bromide-core ({Mo6Br8}4+) clusters having a series of terminal aromatic carboxylate ligands (RCOO), [{Mo6Br8}(RCOO)6]2–, in solution and crystalline phases. The acid dissociation constant of RCOOH (pKa(L)) was shown to govern the redox and emission properties of the clusters. Temperature (T)-controlled emission experiments (3–300 K) demonstrated that the clusters showed large T-dependent emission energies (νem) and lifetimes (τem) because of zero-magnetic-field splitting in the emissive excited triplet (T1) states. The spin sublevel (Φn, n = 1–4) model in the T1 state of the cluster explained very well the T-dependent emission characteristics (νem and τem), irrespective of the clusters studied. Furthermore, we revealed that the energy difference between the lowest-energy (Φ1) and energetically upper-lying third (Φ3) or fourth spin sublevels (Φ4), ΔE13 or ΔE14, respectively, correlated very well with pKa(L). First examples of Ag(I)-containing coordination polymers based on octahedral rhenium(III) chalcocyanide clusters, namely [{Ag(bpy)}{Ag4(bpy)4(μ-CN)}{Re6Q8(CN)6}] (Q = S in 1 or Se in 2; bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, EDS, IR and luminescence spectroscopy. The compounds are isostructural, crystallize in the orthorhombic system (space group Pccn, Z = 4) and possess a rigid 3D framework structure built up from {Re6Q8(CN)6}4– cluster anions and two distinct types of Ag(I)-containing cationic units, mononuclear {Ag(bpy)}+ and tetranuclear {Ag4(bpy)4(μ-CN)}3+, all of which are interconnected through cyanide bridging. The supramolecular structures of 1 and 2 are supported by argentophilic Ag⋯Ag interactions, but surprisingly show very limited π-π stacking of the pyridine rings. Both compounds are highly emissive in red region showing the longest lifetimes hitherto reported for the solid samples of hexarhenium cluster compounds.

Optical trapping-polarized Raman microspectroscopy of single ethanol (EtOH) microdroplets with a diameter (d) of 6.1-16.5 μm levitated in an EtOH vapor-saturated air/N2 gas atmosphere has been explored to elucidate the vibrational and rotational motions of EtOH in the droplets at 22.0 °C. The Raman spectral bandwidth of the C-C stretching vibrational mode observed for an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was narrower than that of bulk EtOH, suggesting that the vibrational/rotational motions of EtOH in the aerosol system were restricted compared to those in the bulk system. In practice, polarized Raman microspectroscopy demonstrated that the rotational relaxation time (τrot) of EtOH in an aerosol microdroplet with d = 16. 5 μm was slower (2.33 ps) than that in a bulk EtOH (1.65 ps), while the vibrational relaxation times (τvib) in the aerosol and bulk EtOH systems were almost comparable with one another: 0.86-0.98 ps. Furthermore, although the τvib value of an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was almost unchanged irrespective of d as described above, the τrot value increased from 2.33 to 3.57 ps with a decrease in d from 16.5 to 6.1 μm, which corresponded to the increase in EtOH viscosity (η) from 1.33 to 2.04 cP with the decrease in d. The droplet size dependences of τrot and η in an aerosol EtOH microdroplet were discussed in terms of the gas/droplet interfacial molecular arrangements of EtOH and Laplace pressure experienced by a spherical EtOH microdroplet in the gas phase.

Conventionally, some patients with methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorder (MTX-LPD) undergo spontaneous tumour regression after cessation of MTX. Although the involvement of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the development and spontaneous regression has been suggested, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we analysed patients who had developed MTX-LPD to evaluate the association between the development and spontaneous regression of MTX-LPD with EBV.We analysed the age, stage, disease activity, MTX dose, lymphocyte count, EBV real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test value, and EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER) positivity rate in patients with MTX-LPD at our hospital. Moreover, we investigated the factors related to spontaneous regression, which is a characteristic of MTX-LPD.Thirty-four patients were enrolled in this study. The MTX dose at LPD onset was 8.3±2.0 mg/week, and the total dose of MTX was 1,530.3±779.2 mg. The EBV load in the peripheral blood was 270.4±431.8 copy/μL, and the pathological tissues of 17 of 34 (50%) patients tested positive for EBER. Twenty-one patients had spontaneous regression after discontinuation of MTX. The factors related to spontaneous regression were examined using a univariate analysis, and the EBV real-time PCR test value in the peripheral blood, EBER in pathological tissues, and improvement rate of lymphocyte count were considered significant factors. The EBV real-time PCR test value in the peripheral blood was defined as an independent factor of spontaneous regression using a multivariate analysis of related factors.EBV may be involved in the development of MTX-LPD and its spontaneous regression.

Background: Influence of Helicobacter pylori infection and sex difference on leukocyte differentials was insufficiently understood. We therefore conducted the current study to evaluate influence of H. pylori and sex on peripheral leukocyte differentials as well as influence of Helicobacter pylori eradication. Methods: Dyspeptic patients and persons asked to examine gastroduodenal lesions at medical check were included. Total leukocytes, differentials, and anti-H.pylori IgG antibody were measured. Those change after eradication was also measured. H. pylori infection was assessed by anti-H. pylori IgG antibody, rapid urease test, and pathologic findings. H. pylori-uninfected patients and non-dyspeptic/seronegative persons were regarded as negative controls. Results: Totally 374 patients and 299 controls were evaluated, and 167 patients were successfully eradicated. Peripheral counts of neutrophil and monocyte elevated with H. pylori infection: 3221.7+/-1108.7 vs. 2911.9+/-1027.3/μL and 307.5+/-130.5 vs. 281.5+/-106.4/μL, (p­=.0002 and .0054). Compared to females, males manifested elevated counts of every leukocyte, but the difference was insignificant in basophil (p=.0089, 0.0316, Conclusions: We confirmed increases in neutrophils and monocytes in H. pylori-infected patients. Successful eradication reduced peripheral counts of neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte, whereas it increased eosinophil counts. Males manifested elevated counts of every leukocyte, comparing to females. H. pylori infection influences systemic immune response and may not predispose to allergic disorders.Trial registration: The study protocol was registered on UMIN (University hospital Medical Information Network system) in Japan (R000017345) in 2014.

Many human viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), do not infect mice, which is challenging for biomedical research. We have previously reported that EBV infection induces erosive arthritis, which histologically resembles rheumatoid arthritis, in humanized NOD/Shi-scid/IL-2Rγnull (hu-NOG) mice; however, the underlying mechanisms are not known. Osteoclast-like multinucleated cells were observed during bone erosion in this mouse model, and therefore, we aimed to determine whether the human or mouse immune system activated bone erosion and analyzed the characteristics and origin of the multinucleated cells in hu-NOG mice. Sections of the mice knee joint tissues were immunostained with anti-human antibodies against certain osteoclast markers, including cathepsin K and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Multinucleated cells observed during bone erosion stained positively for human cathepsin K and MMP-9. These results indicate that human osteoclasts primarily induce erosive arthritis during EBV infections. Human osteoclast development from hematopoietic stem cells transplanted in hu-NOG mice remains unclear. To confirm their differentiation potential into human osteoclasts, we cultured bone marrow cells of EBV-infected hu-NOG mice and analyzed their characteristics. Multinucleated cells cultured from the bone marrow cells stained positive for human cathepsin K and human MMP-9, indicating that bone marrow cells of hu-NOG mice could differentiate from human osteoclast progenitor cells into human osteoclasts. These results indicate that the human immune response to EBV infection may induce human osteoclast activation and cause erosive arthritis in this mouse model. Moreover, this study is the first, to our knowledge, to demonstrate human osteoclastogenesis in humanized mice. We consider that this model is useful for studying associations of EBV infections with rheumatoid arthritis and human bone metabolism.

We report temperature (T = +22.5 ∼ -57.0 °C)-controlled optical trapping of single dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) droplets with the diameter (d) of 7-15 μm in air. Optically levitated DMSO microdroplets containing 0.1 mol/dm3 (=M) potassium iodide (KI) as an additive for reducing the vapor pressure of DMSO in air have been suggested to take supercooled liquid states even below the freezing temperature (fp) of the bulk DMSO liquid (fp = +18.4 °C in the presence of 0.1 M KI) as seen in bright-field microscopic observations of the droplet. Clear evidence for supercooling of an aerosol DMSO microdroplet below fp has been obtained by in situ optical trapping-polarized Raman microspectroscopy of the droplet down to -14.9 °C. Analysis of the polarized Raman spectral data of an aerosol DMSO droplet (d = ∼10 μm) has demonstrated that the droplet at +22.5, +0.2, or -14.9 °C is characterized by the rotational relaxation time (τrot) of a DMSO molecule in the droplet being 1.95, 2.58, or 3.90 ps, respectively. On the basis of the τrot values and the Stokes-Einstein equation (τrot = 8πa3η/kBT where a, η, kB are the radius (1.883 A) of a DMSO molecule, the viscosity in DMSO, and the Boltzmann constant, respectively), the η values in the DMSO microdroplet in air at +22.5, +0.2, or -14.9 °C have been estimated to be 2.39, 2.94, or 4.20 cP, respectively, while that of bulk DMSO liquid at +20.5 °C is 1.98 cP. We also report the T-dependence (+22.5 > T > -14.9 °C) of the viscosity in a single aerosol DMSO microdroplet (d = ∼10 μm) and the effects of aerosolization in air on the viscosity in DMSO.

We report the factors governing zero-magnetic-field splitting (zfs) in the lowest-energy electronically excited triplet (T1) states of cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes, whose zfs energies between the lowest- (φ1) and highest-energy spin-sublevels (φ3) in the T1 states (ΔEzfs) are already known: [Pt(bhq)(dpm)] (1Pt), [Pt(thpy)(acac)] (2Pt), [Pt(ppy)(acac)] (3Pt), cis-[Pt(thpy)2 (4Pt), and cis-[Pt(ppy)2] (5Pt), where bhq, dpm, thpy, acac, and ppy are benzo[h]quinoline, dipivaloylmethane, 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine, acetylacetone, and 2-phenylpyridine, respectively. As one of the important findings, we show the relationship between the ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts of the five Pt(ii) complexes. The implications of the ΔEzfs values on the emission properties of the Pt(ii) complexes in acetonitrile at 293 K are also discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the radiative rate constants of the Pt(ii) complexes correlate with both ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts.

AIM To evaluate left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to determine the impact of biological treatment on LV function in these patients using global circumferential strain (GCS), global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global radial strain (GRS) values assessed by feature tracking cardiac magnetic resonance (FT-CMR) imaging. METHODS Eighty patients with RA and 20 controls without cardiovascular disease underwent non-contrast CMR imaging. Patients with RA received conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) or biologic DMARDs (bDMARDs). Global strains were calculated in 16 LV segments. RESULTS No significant differences in cardiovascular risk factors were found between the RA group and controls. GCS was 21% lower in the RA group compared with controls (P < 0.001) and was 14% lower in the csDMARDs group compared with the bDMARDs group (P = 0.002), whereas, there was no significant difference in GLS and GRS between the RA group and the controls. Tricyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) derivatives in which the 4 and 4' positions were substituted by X, [ReN(CN)3(X2bpy)]- (X = NMe2, NH2, OMe, Me, Cl, and Br), were newly synthesized and characterized. The structures of the new complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. UV-vis spectra of the complexes in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) showed that the peak maximum wavelengths of rhenium-to-π* bpy-type-ligand charge transfer were in the range of 474-542 nm. Cyclic voltammograms in n-(C4H9)4NPF6-DMSO showed one-electron oxidation and reduction waves corresponding to the Re(VI/V) and X2bpy0/- processes, respectively. The new complexes and [ReN(CN)3bpy]- showed photoluminescence in the crystalline phase at 295 and 80 K and in DMSO at 295 K. The origin of the emission in DMSO was attributed to the triplet nature of the rhenium-to-π* bpy-type-ligand charge-transfer transition. Density functional theory calculations showed that the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals were primarily localized on the dxy orbital of the rhenium and π* orbitals of the bpy-type ligand, respectively.

The temperature (T) dependences of the emissions from the tetra-n-butylammonium salts of [{Mo6X8}Y6]2– (X, Y = Cl, Br, and I) in optically transparent polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate matrixes were studied in the T range of 3–300 K. [{Mo6Cl8}Y6]2–, [{Mo6Br8}Y6]2–, and [{Mo6I8}I6]2– showed the T-dependent emission characteristics similar to those of other hexanuclear Mo(II), Re(III), and W(II) clusters reported previously, while [{Mo6I8}Br6]2– and [{Mo6I8}Cl6]2– exhibited the emission properties different from those of other [{Mo6X8}Y6]2– clusters. The photophysical behavior of these clusters was explained by the excited triplet state spin-sublevel (Φn, n = 1–4) model irrespective of the nature of X and Y. The zero-magnetic-field splitting energies between the lowest energy (Φ1) and the higher energy spin sublevels (Φ4 or Φ3) caused by the first- or second-order spin–orbit coupling, ΔE14 or ΔE13, were evaluated to be 620–870 or 50–99 cm–1, respectively. Objective.Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at a heightened risk of sudden cardiac death, an outcome increased in those with prolongation of the corrected electrocardiographic QT interval (QTc). We compared QTc between patients with RA and demographically matched controls and studied the change in QTc after treatment with the interleukin 6 inhibitor tocilizumab (TCZ).Methods.Standard 12-lead electrocardiograms were obtained and QTc was measured in patients with RA at baseline and after 24 weeks of TCZ treatment, then compared with non-RA controls who were frequency-matched on age and sex. Indicators of the baseline QTc and predictors of change in QTc were studied using multivariable linear regression.Results.A total of 94 RA and 42 non-RA controls were studied. The average baseline QTc was 10 ms longer in the RA group vs controls (422 vs 412 ms, respectively; p < 0.001) and decreased to an average of 406 ms with treatment (p < 0.001). Baseline QTc was significantly and independently higher among those with anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies seropositivity, higher swollen joint counts, and higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and matrix metalloproteinase 3. Each log unit decrease in CRP with treatment was associated with an average reduction in QTc of 2.9 ms (p = 0.002) after adjusting for age and baseline QTc. Clinical response measures were not associated with the change in QTc.Conclusion.The marked normalization of QTc observed with TCZ treatment, and its close parallel with CRP reduction, support the premise that systemic inflammation contributes to cardiac repolarization abnormalities in RA that may be amenable to treatment.

New octahedral rhenium cluster complexes [{Re

Novel heteroleptic arylborane–ruthenium(II) complexes having a series of ancillary ligands L′ ([Ru(B2bpy)L′2]2+) in CH3CN showed low-energy/intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT)-type absorption and intense/long-lived emission compared to the reference complexes. The spectroscopic and photophysical properties of [Ru(B2bpy)L′2]2+ were shown to be manipulated synthetically by the electron-donating ability of the ancillary ligand(s). The intense and long-lived emission observed for [Ru(B2bpy)L′2]2+ in CH3CN at 298 K is responsible for the accelerated radiative and decelerated nonradiative decay processes, which are controllable through the electronic structures of the ancillary ligand(s). On the basis of the present systematic study, furthermore, we succeeded in demonstrating the Strickler–Berg-type relation between the molar absorption coefficients of the MLCT bands and the radiative rate constants of the complexes.

We report a systematic study on the redox, spectroscopic, and photophysical properties of a series of [{Mo6X8}Y6]2- (X, Y = Cl, Br, or I. 1-9). All of the [{Mo6X8}Y6]2- clusters show intense and long-lived phosphorescence in both CH3CN and crystalline phases at 298 K. We found that the emission quantum yields (Φem) of 1-9 increase in the sequences X = Cl < Br < I and Y = I < Br < Cl for given Y and X, respectively. The emission lifetimes (τem) of the clusters also increase in the sequence Y = I < Br < Cl for given {Mo6X8}4+-core clusters. The present data demonstrate that arbitrary combinations of X and Y in [{Mo6X8}Y6]2- could tune τem and Φem in the ranges of 85-300 μs and 0.09-0.47, respectively. Both capping (X) and terminal ligand (Y) effects on the photophysical properties of the clusters are discussed on the basis of the energy gap (i.e., emission energy) dependence of the nonradiative decay rate constant.
