Abstract

Epitaxial garnet films of undoped and [Ce.sup.3+]-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and lutetium aluminum garnet (LuAG) were grown by the isothermal liquid phase epitaxy from two different fluxes: we used a standard PbO-[B.sub.2][O.sub.3] flux and, as a novelty, BaO-[B.sub.2][O.sub.3]-Ba[F.sub.2] flux. It is shown that the films obtained from the lead-free BaO flux exhibited superior luminescent properties comparable with those of Czochralski grown single crystals. A detailed comparison of optical, luminescent, and kinetic properties of films grown from these two types of fluxes is made. Abstract

A study was conducted on the changes in the absorption spectra induced by Co60 irradiation and high temperature annealing in selected PbWO4 crystals. Four color centers were proposed namely Pb3+, O-, F and F+ centers. The shaping of the absorption spectrum of PbWO4 crystals below 3.6 eV has been attributed to these color centers. The results indicate the strong sample dependency of the character of the induced absorption spectra for selected samples of PWO.

Abstract

We present a model allowing to estimate the so-called time lag of nucleating halide melts using electrical conductivity measurements. Due to the complex-forming nature of molten halide salts we suppose two basic types of charge carriers in the melt: complexes (playing the role of monomers—building units) and clusters of a newly forming solid phase. Within context of the nonstationary nucleation theory we determined a formula expressing the time dependency of electrical conductivity of such a system and compared this result with the experimental data obtained for the melts of PbBr2, PbCl2, and KPb2Cl5. In terms of this formula the time lag of nucleation may be estimated. This important quantity characterizing the moment from which the nucleated clusters only grow to the macroscopic sizes has been found to be approximately 75% of the total duration of the nucleation process itself.
