Radiation induced formation of color centers in PbWO4 single crystals

Abstract: A study was conducted on the changes in the absorption spectra induced by Co60 irradiation and high temperature annealing in selected PbWO4 crystals. Four color centers were proposed namely Pb3+, O-, F and F+ centers. The shaping of the absorption spectrum of PbWO4 crystals below 3.6 eV has been attributed to these color centers. The results indicate the strong sample dependency of the character of the induced absorption spectra for selected samples of PWO.
