This work represents studies of bitumen separation from a single bitumen-coated sand particle moving in a stream of water at the particle Reynolds number of 500. The transient dynamics of separation processes are calculated numerically using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics based model coupled with the combination of level set and volume of fluid models, known as the coupled level set volume of fluid model. The sand particle diameter is 10−4 m. The bitumen layer thickness comprises 10% of the particle diameter. The simulation results show that 20% of bitumen is removed during the onset of the water flow around the particle. Further, a bitumen layer is transformed into a bitumen tail with 77% of the original bitumen volume. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The main objective of this work is to predict the mixing of two different miscible oils in a very long channel. The background to this problem relates to the mixing of heavy and light oil in a pipeline. As a first step, a 2D channel with an aspect ratio of 250 is considered. The batch-mixing of two miscible crude oils with different viscosities and densities is modeled using an unsteady laminar model and unsteady RANS model available in the commercial CFD solver ANSYS-Fluent. For a comparison, a LES model was used for a 3D version of the 2D channel. The distinguishing feature of this work is the Lagrangian coordinate system utilized to set no-slip wall boundary conditions. The global CFD model has been validated against classical analytical solutions. Excellent agreement has been achieved. Simulations were carried out for a Reynolds number of 6300 (calculated using light oil properties) and a Schmidt number of $$~10^4$$ 104 . The results show that, in contrast to the unsteady RANS model, the LES and unsteady laminar models produce comparable mixing dynamics for two oils in the channel. Analysis of simulations also shows that, for a channel length of 100 m and a height of 0.4 m, the complete mixing of two oils across the channel has not been achieved. We showed that the mixing zone consists of the three different mixing sub-zones, which have been identified using the averaged mass fraction of the heavy oil along the flow direction. The first sub-zone corresponds to the main front propagation area with a length of several heights of the channel. The second and third sub-zones are characterized by so-called shear-flow-driven mixing due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices occurring between oils in the axial direction. It was observed that the third sub-zone has a steeper mass fraction gradient of the heavy oil in the axial direction in comparison with the second sub-zone, which corresponds to the flow-averaged mass fraction of 0.5 for the heavy oil.

A study of the mixing flows (Schmidt number = 103) in a cavitating Venturi tube that feature linear and swirling flows is presented in this paper. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model, the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model, and the mixture multiphase model, as implemented in the commercial CFD ANSYS FLUENT 16.2, were employed. The main emphasis is spending on the influence of different inlet swirling ratios on the generation of cavitation and mixing behaviors in a Venturi tube. Four different inflow regimes were investigated for the Reynolds number Re = 19,044, 19,250, 19,622, 21,276: zero swirl, 15% swirl, 25% swirl and 50% swirl velocity relative to the transverse inflow velocity, respectively. The computed velocity and pressure profiles were shown in good agreement with the experiment data from the literature. The predicted results indicate that the imposed swirl flow moves the cavitation bubbles away from throat surfaces toward the throat axis. The rapid mixing between two volumetric components is promoted in the divergent section when the intense swirl is introduced. Additionally, the increase in the swirl ratio from 0.15 to 0.5 leads to a linear increase in the static pressure drop and a nonlinear increase in the vapor production. The reduction in the fluid viscosity ratio from μ2μ1=10 to μ2μ1=1 generates a high cavitation intensity in the throat of the Venturi tube. However, the changes in the pressure drop and vapor volume fraction are significantly small of pure water flow.

This work is devoted to the development and validation of a sub-model for the partial oxidation of a spherical char particle moving in an air/steam atmosphere. The particle diameter is 2 mm. The coal particle is represented by moisture- and ash-free nonporous carbon while the coal rank is implemented using semi-global reaction rate expressions taken from the literature. The submodel includes six gaseous chemical species (O2, CO2, CO, H2O, H2, N2). Three heterogeneous reactions are employed, along with two homogeneous semi-global reactions, namely carbon monoxide oxidation and the water-gas-shift reaction. The distinguishing feature of the subgrid model is that it takes into account the influence of homogeneous reactions on integral characteristics such as carbon combustion rates and particle temperature. The sub-model was validated by comparing its results with a comprehensive CFD-based model resolving the issues of bulk flow and boundary layer around the particle. In this model, the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the energy and species conservation equations were used to solve the problem by means of the pseudo-steady state approach. At the surface of the particle, the balance of mass, energy and species concentration was applied including the effect of the Stefan flow and heat loss due to radiation at the surface of the particle. Good agreement was achieved between the sub-model and the CFD-based model. Additionally, the CFD-based model was verified against experimental data published in the literature (Makino et al. (2003) Combust. Flame 132, 743-753). Good agreement was achieved between numerically predicted and experimentally obtained data for input conditions corresponding to the kinetically controlled regime. The maximal discrepancy (10%) between the experiments and the numerical results was observed in the diffusion-controlled regime. Finally, we discuss the influence of the Reynolds number, the ambient O2 mass fraction and the ambient temperature on the char particle behaviour.

Experimental and numerical studies have been undertaken to check the influence of a magnetic field on the viscosity of liquid GaInSn with suspended solid particles. The rheological investigations show a significant change of the slope of the measured flow curves between the situation B = 0 and 0.02 T. By means of numerical simulations of the flow in the presence of Lorentz forces it could be shown that the influence of magnetohydrodynamic damping of the flow reduces the measured changes but does not annihilate them. As conclusion a 15 % change of viscosity of the melt in a magnetic field with B = 0.02 T could be fixed.
