1. Depressive Problems in Conduct-Disordered Adolescents.

Abstract

Compared responses of two groups of conduct-disordered adolescents (N=76): those who scored high on a depressive inventory and those who did not. Found groups differed significantly, not only on depressive feelings, but also on other emotional difficulties which suggests existence of subgroups with different characteristics within conduct-disordered population. Abstract

Teachers and classroom aides of learning disabled pupils were asked to complete the Conners Abbreviated Teacher Rating Scale (CATRS) on two separate occasions, one month apart. Inter-rater reliability for teachers (.866) and for aides (.602), and reliability across time for teachers (.866) and aides (.603) achieved acceptable levels. (Author/BW)

Abstract

Thailand has experienced extremely rapid economic growth, and with that growth the increased social mobility and political democracy that comes with it. As the only Southeast Asian country to have avoided colonization, it still boasts a functioning monarchy, remains close to its religious roots, and clings to its cultural heritage. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Thailand first provides an overview of the country in the introduction, traces the long and complicated history in the chronology, and goes into much greater detail in the dictionary. Offering 64 new entries, as well as updates and revisions to older ones, the dictionary presents important persons, places, institutions, and more in an easily accessible resource. Significant recent events are discussed including the 1997-98 Thai economic crisis and its effects, reforms of the national government, and the growth in political roles of both businessman and other middle class members. In addition, the book updates basic information relative to population growth, urbanization, and industrialization of the economy. All this is topped off by nearly 20 Appendixes and a solid bibliography, making this an essential reference tool.

5. Validity of Measures of Conduct Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety.

Abstract

The convergent and discriminant validity of multiple measures of conduct disorder, depression, and anxiety were examined. Data used in this analysis were collected on 95 students between 11 and 18 years of age who were receiving services in one of three alternative schools for behavior-disordered students. Two measures of each variable were completed by each participant and by each participant's teacher. Measures included the Children's Depression Inventory, Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale, and the Conduct Problem and Anxiety/Withdrawal factors of the Behavior Problem Checklist and the Walker Problem Behavior Identification Checklist. In addition, a global rating of depression was obtained from the teachers by interview. The results indicated that convergent and discriminant validity were adequate for the measures of depression and conduct disorder with this population. Anxiety measures did not meet criteria for convergent validity. The implications of a significant rater effect were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. The Relationship of Staff Contact and Activity to the Stereotypy of Children with Multiple Disabilities

Abstract

This study was a descriptive analysis of the role that staff-resident interaction, content of activity, and presence of teaching staff played on the stereotypy of three children with severe mental retardation and dual sensory impairments. The study also examined several characteristics of the instructional setting, including time allocation to various activities and percentage of staff interaction relative to the type of activity. Results indicated that staff-resident interaction was associated with dramatic reductions in the stereotypy of each child, that the type of activity was associated with differential responses across children, and that the presence of certified teaching staff was associated with reductions in stereotypy. Results also indicated an extremely low level of staff-resident interaction despite adequate staff-resident ratio.
