11. Prospective Educational Applications of Mental Simulation: A Meta-Review

Abstract

This paper focuses on the potential of mental simulation (mentally rehearsing an action to enhance performance) as a useful contemporary educational method. By means of a meta-review, it is examined which conditions impede or facilitate the effectiveness of mental simulation (MS). A computer search was conducted using Ovid PsycINFO. Reviews, meta-reviews, or meta-analyses published between 1806 and 2006 were included. The current paper presents the results of ten publications in which about 630 studies on mental simulation or mental practice are reviewed. According to the analyses, conditions that influence the effect of MS are the type of skill practiced, personal factors, time per trial, amount of trials, and instructional procedures. Based on these insights, it is reflected upon in which areas MS would be functional with regard to contemporary educational demands, such as for emotional, behavioral, and (other) complex cognitive tasks.

Abstract

Variable speed hydroelectric units equipped with full size frequency converter (FSFC) offer high operational flexibility enabling fast operating point transitions which increase grid regulation capacities. The XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European research project aims to demonstrate flexibility of such technology at prototype scale. The Z’Mutt pumping station, part of the Grande Dixence hydroelectric scheme located in Switzerland, is one of the demonstrators focused on the FSFC technology with a new 5 MW reversible Francis pump-turbine which will be commissioned in 2021. This paper, divided in two parts, aims to simulate the turbine mode fast start-up sequence made possible with the use of a FSFC and to assess the unit damage by means of 1D and 3D CFD simulations. The part I of this paper presents the 1D hydraulic transient simulation results of start-up sequences of unit U5 considering both conventional fixed speed technology and variable speed technology. The time evolution of the unit’s operating point is used as input data for 3D CFD simulations of part II, aiming to assess the impeller damage. Different control strategies to use the FSFC for turbine mode start-up sequence are analysed. Advantages and limits of each strategy are discussed, and recommendation is made for the Z’Mutt prototype demonstrator.

25. No effect of ambient odor on the affective appraisal of a desktop virtual environment with signs of disorder.

Abstract

Desktop virtual environments (VEs) are increasingly deployed to study the effects of environmental qualities and interventions on human behavior and safety related concerns in built environments. For these applications it is essential that users appraise the affective qualities of the VE similar to those of its real world counterpart. Previous studies have shown that factors like simulated lighting, sound and dynamic elements all contribute to the affective appraisal of a desktop VE. Since ambient odor is known to affect the affective appraisal of real environments, and has been shown to increase the sense of presence in immersive VEs, it may also be an effective tool to tune the affective appraisal of desktop VEs. This study investigated if exposure to ambient odor can modulate the affective appraisal of a desktop VE with signs of public disorder.Participants explored a desktop VE representing a suburban neighborhood with signs of public disorder (neglect, vandalism and crime), while being exposed to either room air or subliminal levels of unpleasant (tar) or pleasant (cut grass) ambient odor. Whenever they encountered signs of disorder they reported their safety related concerns and associated affective feelings.Signs of crime in the desktop VE were associated with negative affective feelings and concerns for personal safety and personal property. However, there was no significant difference between reported safety related concerns and affective connotations in the control (no-odor) and in each of the two ambient odor conditions.Ambient odor did not affect safety related concerns and affective connotations associated with signs of disorder in the desktop VE. Thus, semantic congruency between ambient odor and a desktop VE may not be sufficient to influence its affective appraisal, and a more realistic simulation in which simulated objects appear to emit scents may be required to achieve this goal.
