Agriculture is the foundation of society, has provided humanity with its food needs for over ten thousand years. The use of pesticides in Brazil and the world has grown exponentially in recent decades. The objective of this study was assessment the use of agrochemicals and their environmental impact on agricultural production of the Island of Maranhão. The study area is located in Paço do Lumiar, Maranhão, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from agricultural land during the wet season (between the months of February and May) and dry season (between the months of September and October) seasons of 2018.

Os sedimentos dos manguezais são muito úmidos e ricos em matéria orgânica em decomposição, formados por uma série de espécies resistentes ao fluxo das marés. Este ecossistema costeiro é formado por uma série de espécies resistentes ao fluxo das marés, com solo contendo um ambiente rico que limita a diversidade de biomas. Objetivo desse estudo foi a identificação de microrganismos e a caracterização físico-química em amostras de sedimento de dois pontos de um manguezal localizados nas proximidades de um hospital na ilha de São Luís, Maranhão. Duas amostras do sedimento foram coletadas em tubos apropriados, armazenadas e encaminhadas para o Laboratório de Microbiologia Ambiental na Universidade CEUMA. No laboratório, alíquotas foram retiradas para as características físico-químicas utilizando-se metodologia conforme preconiza a Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), rastreando características como granulometria, matéria orgânica, carbono orgânico, nitrato e nitrito, fosforo total e pH. O solo foi caracterizado como orgânico, rico em nitrato, nitrito e sais minerais, com pH (6,3), característico do ecossistema de mangues. Foi realizado isolamento, identificação dos isolados por MALDI-TOF (do inglês, Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry) e teste de susceptibilidade aos antimicrobianos utilizado metodologia de Kirby-Bauer. Foram identificadas bactérias gram-negativas, principalmente do gênero Ochrobactrum e espécies termotolerante, como Escherichia coli que são consideradas patógenos indicadores de falta de saneamento básico e que apresentou multirresistência in vitro aos antibióticos testados. Nosso estudo fortalece a ideia de mais pesquisas para avaliar a diversidade de microrganismos presentes em manguezais para incentivar e alertar sobre a preservação e controle sanitário de ecossistemas de mangue.

Watersheds are defined as a set of lands where water drainage occurs through rivers and their tributaries. A large quantity of water resources exist in the state of Maranh&atilde, o, Brazil, where rivers and their basins must meet environmental quality standards defined by the limits set out in national environmental council (CONAMA) legislation 357/05 for physicochemical and microbiological parameters, including parasites. Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to study the temporal and spatial variations in water quality of a segment of the Pindar&eacute, River. The data set included nine parameters for three sampling points over eleven months. Principal component analysis grouped the monitored sampling points into four clusters and identified electrical conductivity, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, salinity, and Escherichia coli as being associated with the dry season and nitrite, nitrate, and turbidity as being associated with the rainy season. Three principal components explained 83.80% of the data variance during the rainy and dry seasons. The evaluated correlations indicated that during the rainy season, nitrite (~0.18 mg L&minus, 1) and turbidity (~46.00 NTU) levels were the highest, but pH was at its lowest (~6.61). During the dry season, TDS (~155.00 mg L&minus, 1) and pH (~8.10) were highest, and E. coli bacteria was more abundant.

The Mearim River is one of the main rivers of Maranhão, which, over the years, has been affected from pollution caused by human activities such as deforestation, disposal of domestic effluents, and agricultural activities, among others. The objective of this research was to evaluate the environmental quality of the Mearim River through the study of the sediment in different periods. In order to investigate this question, four sampling points (P1- Balneário, P2-Cais, P3-Trizidela, and P4-Matadouro) were submitted to particle size analysis (clay, silt, and fine sand) and physico-chemical analyses (pH, organic matter, and inorganic and organic carbon). Two principal components were generated in principal component analysis, explaining 73% of the total variance among the parameters within the studied periods. The overall analysis of the data set by principal component analysis highlighted two clusters: one relating the attributes to three sampling points analyzed in the rainy season and another relating the attributes to four sampling points analyzed in the dry period. Multivariate analysis of the data showed that the orga­­­­­­­nic matter, clay, and pH parameters were directly correlated with the dry period (correlation coefficients 0.41), and inorganic matter (correlation coefficient = | 0,414) was more sensitive in the rainy season.

The Corda river is the main source of fresh water for recreation, leisure, supply and irrigation to the municipality of Barra do Corda - MA. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the physicochemical parameters of Corda river’s water using the methodology described by the American Public Health Association. The water samples were collected in the seasonal period spanning between February and September of the year of 2018. The parameters which were analyzed during the study were pH, conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids and salinity, besides concentrations of nitrite, nitrate, and total phosphorus. Three principal components were identified during the PC Analysis. Those components explain more than 74% of the total variance observed during the rainy and dry season. Axis 1and 2 included variables which were related to quality of water and could be affected by the change in seasons. The results indicated that pH (7.11), P (2,82 mg L-1), NO3- (3,23 mg L-1), turbidity (35.82 NTU) and conductivity (35.83 µS/cm) parameters were most affected by changing from rainy to dry season.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar os parasitas e Escherichia coli em alfaces (Lactuca sativa Linnaeus) comercializadas em feiras livres em São José de Ribamar-MA. Foram coletadas 30 amostras, na análise parasitológica utilizou-se o método de sedimentação/centrifugação e a microbiológica o kit ColiTest® e o meio ágar eosina azul de metileno para contagem de Escherichia coli. Todas as amostras continham algum tipo de protozoário e/ou helminto, sendo os protozoários Balantidium coli mais ocorrente na feira A e Entamoeba coli na B. Sobre os aspectos microbiológicos, todas as amostras apresentaram coliformes totais e Escherichia coli na amostra do vendedor 15 da feira A (3,87 x 102 UFC/mL) e o vendedor 4 da feira B (2,70 x 102 UFC/mL) foram que mais apresentaram contaminação por esse termololerante. As alfaces comercializadas encontram-se com restrição no consumo devido as condições higiênicas e sanitárias, assim, compreender os aspectos associados à contaminação dessas hortaliças é importante.

O manguezal é um ecossistema rico, porém muito limitante para o crescimento microbiano, por ser um ecossistema de transição o mesmo limita a diversidade microbiana, de fauna e flora. Nesse contexto, os microorganismos que estão presentes nesse habitat possuem habilidades de sobrevivência interessantes no contexto biotecnológico, sendo potenciais produtores de enzimas de interesse industrial. Após feita a coleta, foram realizadas análises físico-químicas do solo com o intuito de se conhecer as propriedades de granulometria, matéria orgânica, umidade e pH. Após o isolamento e identificação dos microorganismos do solo da área de manguezal, foi encontrada uma variedade de bactérias e fungos, totalizando dezesseis bactérias equivalentes a 68,75% dos microorganismos totais entre elas um actinomiceto e cinco fungos equivalentes a 31,25% das amostras. Estes microorganismos passaram por uma seleção de crescimento em meios de culturas diversificados e foram identificados através de sua macromorfologia e microscopia óptica por meio de coloração de gram.Palavras-chave: Bioprospecção, Isolamento, Microorganismos.
