Cancer is a global health challenge, with changing demographics and lifestyle factors producing an increasing burden worldwide. Screening advancements are enabling earlier diagnoses, but current cancer immunotherapies only induce remission in a small proportion of patients and come at a high cost. Cancer vaccines may offer a solution to these challenges, but they have been mired by poor results in past decades. Greater understanding of tumor biology, coupled with the success of vaccine technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic, has reinvigorated cancer vaccine development. With the first signs of efficacy being reported, cancer vaccines may be beginning to fulfill their potential. Solid tumors, however, present different hurdles than infectious diseases. Combining insights from previous cancer vaccine clinical development and contemporary knowledge of tumor immunology, we ask: who are the 'right' patients, what are the 'right' targets, and which are the 'right' modalities to maximize the chances of cancer vaccine success?

Radiation exposure poses significant health risks, particularly in radiotherapy and nuclear accidents. Certain dietary ingredients offer potential radioprotection and radiosensitization. In this review, we explore the impact of dietary ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds, on radiation sensitivity and their potential for radioprotection. Radiosensitizers reoxygenate hypoxic tumor cells, increase the radiolysis of water molecules, and regulate various molecular mechanisms to induce cytotoxicity and inhibit DNA repair in irradiated tumor cells. Several dietary ingredients, such as vitamins C, E, selenium, and phytochemicals, show promise in protecting against radiation by reducing radiation-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage. Radioprotectors, such as ascorbic acid, curcumin, resveratrol, and genistein, activate and modulate various signaling pathways, including Keap1-Nrf2, NF-κB, PI3K/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), STAT3, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), in response to radiation-induced oxidative stress, regulating inflammatory cytokine expression, and promoting DNA damage repair and cell survival. Conversely, natural dietary radiosensitizers impede these pathways by enhancing DNA damage and inducing apoptosis in irradiated tumor cells. Understanding the molecular basis of these effects may aid in the development of effective strategies for radioprotection and radiosensitization in cancer treatment. Dietary interventions have the potential to enhance the efficacy of radiation therapy and minimize the side effects associated with radiation exposure.

Cancer remains a global problem, with millions of new cases diagnosed yearly and countless lives lost. The financial burden of cancer therapy, along with worries about the long-term safety of existing medicines, necessitates the investigation of alternative approaches to cancer prevention. Probiotics generate chemopreventive compounds such as bacteriocins, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which have demonstrated the ability to impede cancer cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and bolster the expression of pro-apoptotic genes. On the other hand, prebiotics, classified as non-digestible food ingredients, promote the proliferation of probiotics within the colon, thereby ensuring sustained functionality of the gut microbiota. Consequently, the synergistic effect of combining prebiotics with probiotics, known as the synbiotic effect, in dietary interventions holds promise for potentially mitigating cancer risk and augmenting preventive measures. The utilization of gut microbiota in cancer treatment has shown promise in alleviating adverse health effects. This review explored the potential and the role of probiotics and synbiotics in enhancing health and contributing to cancer prevention efforts. The prevalence of cancer is expected to increase worldwide for reasons related to a lack of awareness of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Implementing cancer education programs in schools in the developing countries with similar demographic, economic, and health transition to that of Oman is crucial for enhancing students' cancer knowledge and promoting healthy behavior. This study aims to explore the perceptions of education, policymakers, and teachers regarding the inclusion of cancer education in secondary school curriculum. The study employed a qualitative method, conducting semi-structured interviews with ten education policymakers and ten school teachers. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed verbatim and qualitatively using the framework approach. Three main themes have emerged: (1) perception of the importance of cancer education inclusion within the school curriculum, (2) the perception of cancer education implementation in schools, and (3) the perceived challenges of introducing cancer education in schools. Policymakers and teachers in Oman recognize the importance of cancer education in schools and emphasized the need to prioritize it due to the increasing prevalence of the disease and the belief that negative lifestyle habits played a role in its increased prevalence. Implementing cancer education programs in schools is essential in improving students' knowledge of cancer and health behaviors. Collaboration between the department of school health in ministry of education and in ministry of health and incorporating cancer education into different school activities can be beneficial. Cancer screenings aid in the early detection of cancer and can help reduce cancer-related mortality. The current model of care for cancer screening is often siloed, based on the targeted cancer site. We tested the acceptability of a new model of care, called the One-Stop-Shop Cancer Screening Clinic, that centralizes cancer screenings and offers patients the option to complete all their recommended cancer screenings within one to two visits. We administered surveys to 59 community members and 26 healthcare providers to gather feedback about the One-Stop-Shop model of care. Both community members and providers identified potential benefits (e.g., decreased patient burden, increased completion of cancer screenings) and also potential challenges (e.g., challenges with workflow and timing of care) of the model of care. The results of the study support the acceptability of the model of care. Of the community members surveyed, 89.5% said, if offered, they would be interested in participating in the One-Stop-Shop Cancer Screening Clinic. Purpose: This paper examines the subjective experience of medical interventions on intersex bodies to reduce cancer risk., Methods: Twenty-five individuals with intersex variations took part in semi-structured interviews, analysed through thematic discourse analysis., Results: Intersex bodies were positioned as inherently sick and in need of modification, with cancer risk legitimating surgical and hormonal intervention. This resulted in embodied shame, with negative impacts on fertility and sexual wellbeing. However, many participants resisted discourses of bio-pathologisation and embraced intersex status. Some medical interventions, such as HRT, were perceived to have increased the risk of cancer. Absence of informed consent, and lack of information about intersex status and the consequences of medical intervention, was positioned as a human rights violation. This was compounded by ongoing medical mismanagement, including health care professional lack of understanding of intersex variations, and the objectification or stigmatization of intersex people within healthcare. The consequence was non-disclosure of intersex status in health contexts and lack of trust in health care professionals., Conclusions: The legitimacy of poorly-evidenced cancer risk discourses to justify medical intervention on intersex bodies needs to be challenged. Healthcare practitioners need to be provided with education and training about cultural safety practices for working with intersex people.

Children's early awareness about cancer, through exposure to cancer biology and prevention strategies and research principles, is a promising focus of education and learning. It may also benefit the pipeline of people entering into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. We describe an educational pilot program for elementary school students, using developmentally appropriate activities focused on cancer at a museum dedicated to children's maker-centered learning and STEM. The program was implemented through a public school in Washington, DC serving students underrepresented in STEM. Program conceptualization, museum and school engagement, and maker learning pedagogy are described, as well as curricular outcomes. A total of N = 111 students (44% female, 75% Black/African American, 5% Latine) participated in a day-long field trip. Museum educators, assisted by cancer center researchers, led a multipart workshop on cancer and the environment and hands-on rotation of activities in microbiology, immunology, and ultraviolet radiation safety; students then completed self-report evaluations. Results indicate that nearly all (> 95%) students practiced activities typical of a STEM professional at the program, and > 70% correctly answered factual questions about topics studied. Importantly, 87-94% demonstrated clear STEM interest, a sense of belonging in the field, and practice implementing skills for success in STEM (e.g., perseverance, imagination, teamwork). This pilot demonstrated acceptability and feasibility in delivering a cancer-focused curriculum to underserved elementary students using maker learning while favorably impacting key objectives. The most effective health communication builds from evidence-based best practices and theory. In practice, health campaigns rely on considerations often under-discussed in health communication, such as consistent agency-style client service, image management, and community coalition-building. Health outcome progress often requires change at multiple levels, from individual cognition and behavior to policy creation. These multi-level needs further highlight the importance of effective practical health communication supporting a range of outcomes and building toward replication. This article covers the complexities of building and implementing a theory-informed health communication structure for a multifaceted, place-based cancer prevention initiative. Part of the overall process includes detailing the internal communications of a health communication group, interorganizational communication, engaging community partner support, the message creation process, and longitudinal efforts on program maintenance and assessment. Furthermore, this article seeks to offer an example of the client service role a health communication team can play to combine theory, empirical message development, and community goals in whole community efforts. Ultimately, the goal is to share experiences from seven years of program work to help guide future community-based efforts in other health contexts and foster progress in theoretical and practical understandings of health communication.

Background: Forty percent of new cancer cases in the United States are attributed to modifiable risks, which can be influenced by the built environment. Recent cancer prevention guidelines include recommendations for making communities conducive to healthy living. Focused on the city of Philadelphia, the present study aims to 1) evaluate neighborhood-level adherence to cancer prevention guidelines by developing two novel indices and 2) identify factors driving low compliance in neighborhoods with high cancer mortality., Methods: Philadelphia neighborhoods were compared to the city overall on ten cancer prevention recommendations. Comparison scores informed two indices: one focused on the American Cancer Society's guidelines for Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Smoking, and the other focused on Healthy People 2030's guidelines for Prevention Services. Indices were mapped by neighborhood and compared to cancer mortality. Where low adherence overlapped with high cancer mortality, the recommendations driving low compliance were identified., Results: Distinct geospatial patterns were observed in adherence to guidelines, and while drivers of low adherence varied by neighborhood, general trends emerged in different areas of the city. Concerning Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Smoking Guideline adherence, some areas appeared to be more influenced by the built environment, while others were impacted by specific behavioral risk factors such as excessive alcohol consumption. Preventive Service recommendation adherence was driven in some parts by self-reported poor health and, in others, low cancer screening rates and a high physician-to-resident ratio. In neighborhoods where poor guideline adherence overlapped with high cancer mortality, the built environment emerged as a potentially important factor., Discussion: This study considers the importance of the built environment in influencing adherence to cancer prevention guidelines. Longstanding inequities in cancer prevention and control require novel approaches to improve evidence-based intervention implementation. Exploring and elevating the perspectives of cancer prevention and control practitioners working to advance health equity and equitably implement evidence-based interventions is an important yet underutilized step among researchers working in this space. The purpose of this study was to explore practitioners' perspectives of how health equity is defined and integrated into their work, challenges of advancing health equity for implementation in local settings, and associated strategies. We conducted virtual key informant interviews and focus groups with 16 US practitioners (e.g. clinicians, health administrators, public health professionals) in 2021-2022. Interviews and focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed. Data were coded using inductive content analysis and summarized into themes. Four major themes emerged: (i) how health equity is conceptualized as a process and outcome; (ii) need to shift equity mindsets; (iii) importance of community partnerships; (iv) organizational policies and strategies for fostering equity in implementation. Respondents noted the need for research and medical communities to learn about the importance and benefits of allowing communities to shape implementation to advance equity in the delivery of evidence-based interventions and outcomes. Additionally, respondents emphasized that institutional leaders should initiate changes regarding equitable implementation at the organizational- and system-levels. Respondents endorsed the need to address equity issues related to the implementation of cancer prevention and control programs, practices, and policies. Cancer is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality. Poverty is a carcinogen and a leading cause of cancer disparities and overall mortality in the United States. Poverty is often viewed as an individual failure for "being poor," but in fact, poverty is structurally driven, intergenerational, and place-based that socially deprives and denies human potential. Disparities in timely cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and survival disproportionally impact people living in poverty and especially in persistent poverty areas, an extreme form of place-based poverty that affects communities over multiple generations. There has been some progress made to address place-based conditions that exacerbate poverty, such as the NCI's initiative on persistent poverty. However, gross inequality and cancer disparities continue to exist and persist. The time is now to accelerate the development of research-informed strategies and solutions with communities along with multisectoral collaborations with education, housing, occupation/workforce, foster care, criminal justice, transportation, and data collection systems. Traditional Chinese medicine has accumulated a wealth of experiences in individualized cancer prevention and serves as a complement to Western medicine. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are microbial metabolites in the gut that may play a role in cancer prevention and treatment. They affect the metabolism of both normal and cancer cells, regulating various cellular energetic processes. SCFAs also inhibit histone deacetylases, which are targets for cancer therapy. The three main SCFAs are acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which are transported into cells through specific transporters. SCFAs may enhance the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents and modulate immune cell metabolism, potentially reprogramming the tumor microenvironment. Although SCFAs and SCFA-generating microbes enhance therapeutic efficacy of several forms of cancer therapy, published data also support the opposing viewpoint that SCFAs mitigate the efficacy of some cancer therapies. Therefore, the relationship between SCFAs and cancer is more complex, and this review discusses some of these aspects. Cancer screening is the most cost-effective prevention strategy that enables improved cancer morbidity and mortality rates. However, there was a significant decline in cancer screening during the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. This study aimed to measure regional differences in cancer screening by comparing screening rates before and during COVID-19 and to examine factors explaining the regional difference in cancer screening. All variables including the differences in cancer screening rate before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were collected from 229 administrative subregions in South Korea and joined with each community in ArcGIS environment. Factors explaining regional difference in cancer screening were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and interactive decision tree modeling. Cancer screening rates decreased in all regions during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. The findings revealed that national health insurance premiums, the number of cancer screening facilities, livelihood benefit recipients, and the population aged 65+ could be classified as variables highly affecting the decrease in cancer screening rate. These findings highlight the efforts to appraise different barriers to cancer screening in each community. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe alcohol-related cancer risk awareness and examine sociodemographic and alcohol-related variance in attitudes towards implementation of cancer warning labelling on alcohol containers in Estonia., Study Design: Nationally representative data from a 2022 cross-sectional survey (n = 2059) among the 15-74-year-old population in Estonia were used., Methods: Descriptive statistics on the prevalence of alcohol-related cancer risk awareness and support for the implementation of cancer risk warning labelling on alcohol containers are presented. Poisson regression analysis was used to investigate whether support for warning labelling varied by sociodemographic variables, individual alcohol consumption and cancer risk awareness indicators., Results: Study found that 73.2% of respondents associated alcohol consumption with increased cancer risk for one or more cancer sites, but implementation of alcohol cancer risk labelling was only supported by 54%. Women, younger age groups, non-Estonians and those with lower education level expressed higher support for warning labelling, whereas lower support was found among those with high-risk alcohol consumption. As expected, awareness of alcohol-related cancer risk and perceiving individual alcohol consumption as a cancer hazard were associated with support for warning labelling., Conclusions: These findings emphasise the need for better communication of alcohol-related cancer risks as public awareness on the link between alcohol consumption and site-specific cancer risk was low. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a widespread infection associated with various cancers, including cervical, oropharyngeal, anal, and genital cancers. This infection contributes to 5 % of global cancer cases annually, affecting approximately 625,600 women and 69,400 men. Cervical cancer remains the most prevalent HPV-linked cancer among females, with the highest incidence seen in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). While most HPV infections are transient, factors such as HPV variants, age, gender, and socioeconomic status influence transmission risks. HPV is categorized into high-risk (HR-HPV) and low-risk types, with strains like HPV 16 and 18 displaying distinct demographic patterns. The intricate pathogenesis of HPV involves genetic and epigenetic interactions, with HPV oncogenes (E6 and E7) and integration into host DNA playing a pivotal role in driving malignancies. Early diagnostics, utilizing HPV DNA testing with surrogate markers such as p16, and advanced molecular techniques like PCR, liquid biopsy, and NGS, significantly impact the management of HPV-induced cancers. Effectively managing HPV-related cancers demands a multidisciplinary approach, including immunotherapy, integrating current therapies, ongoing trials, and evolving treatments. Objectives: The burden of cancer is increasing rapidly in Latin America. Primary care has an essential role in cancer prevention, but implementation levels of prevention practices are not well known. This study evaluated implementation levels and associated factors of cancer preventive practices in primary care over time., Study Design: The study incorporated a retrospective multicentre cohort study., Methods: A population of 59,949 patients registered at three primary care clinics was followed from January 2018 to December 2022 in Santiago, Chile. We studied human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunisation, brief counselling for smoking cessation and alcohol consumption, and cervical and breast cancer screening practices. Standardised electronic medical records were utilised as the source of information. Social, clinical, and organisational factors associated with prevention practices were studied., Results: The cohort attrition level was 17.1%. Most of the population was of a low socioeconomic status, and 70% visited a primary health centre yearly. Implementation rates of immunisation practices were 90.84% for HPV and 80.94% for HBV in 2022. In contrast, brief counselling for smoking and alcohol consumption was below 20% during the study period. Cervical cancer screening decreased by 25.58% between 2018 and 2022, whereas breast cancer screening reached only 41.71% of the target population. Opportunistic medical visits were strongly associated with brief counselling and breast cancer screening., Conclusion: Implementation practices for cancer prevention in a Chilean primary care cohort are high for immunisation and very low for brief counselling and screening practices. There are lots of gene editing tools for targeting genome sequences. Some are almost known, and most are a complete mystery and undiscovered. CRISPR/Cas editing tools have brought about a major revolution in medicine. Researchers have shown that CRISPR can modify DNA much more accurately, economically and easily than previous methods. CRISPR has proven itself effective for the deletion, replacement and insertion of DNA fragments into cell types, tissues and organisms. Recently, combining CRISPR/Cas with factors (transcription factors/repressors, exonucleases, endonucleases, transposons, caspase, fluorescent proteins, oxidoreductive enzymes, DNA/RNA polymerases), and elements (aptamers, barcodes, fluorescent probes, Trigger) have provided genome, transcriptome, proteome and epigenome modification. Cancer represents a major global public health burden, with new cases estimated to increase from 14 million in 2012 to 24 million by 2035. Primary prevention is an effective strategy to reduce the costs associated with cancer burden. For example, measures to ban tobacco consumption have dramatically decreased lung cancer incidence and vaccination against human papillomavirus can prevent cervical cancer development. Unfortunately, the etiological factors of many cancer types are not completely clear or are difficult to actively control; therefore, the primary prevention of such cancers is not practical. In this review, we update the progress on precision therapy by targeting the whole carcinogenesis process, especially for three high-risk groups: (1) those with chronic inflammation, (2) those with inherited germline mutations, and (3) those with precancerous lesions like polyps, gastritis, actinic keratosis or dysplasia. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), Noonan syndrome, and related syndromes, grouped as RASopathies, result from dysregulation of the RAS-MAPK pathway and demonstrate varied multisystemic clinical phenotypes. Together, RASopathies are among the more prevalent genetic cancer predisposition syndromes and require nuanced clinical management. When compared with the general population, children with RASopathies are at significantly increased risk of benign and malignant neoplasms. In the past decade, clinical trials have shown that targeted therapies can improve outcomes for low-grade and benign neoplastic lesions but have their own challenges, highlighting the multidisciplinary care needed for such individuals, specifically those with NF1. Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a tropical fruit with various health benefits. The objective of this study is to present a thorough analysis of the cancer preventive and anticancer therapeutic properties of litchi constituents and phytocompounds. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis criteria were followed in this work. Various litchi extracts and constituents were studied for their anticancer effects. In vitro studies showed that litchi-derived components reduced cell proliferation, induced cytotoxicity, and promoted autophagy via increased cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Based on in vivo studies, litchi flavonoids and other extracted constituents significantly reduced tumor size, number, volume, and metastasis. Major signaling pathways impacted by litchi constituents were shown to stimulate proapoptotic, antiproliferative, and antimetastatic activities. Background: Individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) face unique challenges in accessing cancer prevention measures. Caregivers play a crucial role in facilitating these measures, yet their perspectives are under-researched. Methods: This systematic literature review explores caregiver perspectives on cancer prevention for adults with IDs in institutional and home care settings, aiming to understand their roles, knowledge, and challenges. Thirteen articles from the UK, the USA, Canada, and Ireland were analyzed through thematic synthesis. Four overarching themes were identified: breast cancer screening perspectives, caregivers' knowledge and barriers to cancer prevention, caregivers' perspectives, and cultural context and decision-making. Results: Caregivers, including healthcare professionals and family members, are essential in facilitating breast cancer screening for individuals with IDs. Challenges include explaining screening procedures, limited awareness, and logistical barriers, highlighting the need for targeted educational interventions. Disparities in access underscore the necessity for comprehensive training programs. Healthcare professionals' perspectives reveal existing disparities and suggest interventions for improved accessibility and understanding. Cultural context influences decision-making, emphasizing the importance of culturally sensitive care. The role of family caregivers in decision-making necessitates empowering and supporting them through tailored interventions. Conclusions: This review provides insights into the challenges and opportunities in cancer prevention for individuals with IDs, suggesting the need for educational interventions, training programs, and systemic changes to address disparities. It lays the groundwork for future research and the development of holistic and inclusive strategies in this critical healthcare domain.

Background: The association between cancer and multiple sclerosis has long been investigated. Several studies and reviews have examined the risk of cancer among patients with multiple sclerosis treated with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) but with conflicting results. This study will aim to investigate the association between DMTs for multiple sclerosis and subsequent cancer risk using research synthesis methods., Methods/design: We designed and registered a study protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis. We will include randomised and non-randomised trials, prospective or retrospective cohort studies, and case-control studies of treatment with DMTs compared with placebo, no treatment, or another active agent. The primary outcome will be the risk of cancer (all-malignant neoplasms) in association with the exposure of DMTs. Secondary outcomes will include site-specific cancers (e.g. breast cancer). Literature searches will be conducted in multiple electronic databases (from their inception onwards), including the following: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Two researchers will screen all citations, full-text articles, and abstract data independently. The risk of bias (quality) of individual studies will be appraised using an appropriate tool. If feasible, we will use a two-stage approach to evidence synthesis: (1) Peto's method for meta-analysis of data from randomised trials alone; and (2) Random-effects model for meta-analysis adding data from non-randomised studies. We will calculate odds ratios and their associated 95% confidence intervals. Potential sources of heterogeneity will be explored in additional analyses (e.g. subgroups considering different DMTs individually, mechanism of action, type of control, length of follow-up, mode of treatment)., Discussion: This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised and non-randomised studies will provide an updated synthesis of the risk of cancer associated with DMTs for adult patients with multiple sclerosis. Background/objectives: The "One Health" approach underscores the connection between human, animal, and environmental health, promoting solutions to global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD) promotes a plant-based diet with organically grown plants to reduce the environmental impact of meat production and decrease the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The BIOQUALIM project will evaluate the PHD's effectiveness in preventing NCDs like periodontal diseases and cancers through four inter-related studies., Methods: The clinical study will involve volunteers reducing their meat consumption and incorporating einkorn into their diet, allow for analysis of their interdental microbiota, oral health, general health, and quality of life. The chemical analysis will study nutrients and anti-cancer compounds in einkorn and common wheat varieties. The behavioral study will explore PHD knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to PHD. The psycho-social study will evaluate the impact of peer-support workshops on plant-based dietary cooking among post-therapy cancer patients., Results: The results are expected to demonstrate that einkorn varieties possess nutritional properties that, when incorporated into the PHD enriched with einkorn, can enhance health markers. This study will identify barriers to and facilitators of PHD adoption and highlight how peer-support workshops can improve dietary adherence., Conclusions: BIOQUALIM's transdisciplinary approach will demonstrate the PHD's role in preventing NCDs.

Background and Objective: Cancer, as the second leading cause of death worldwide, poses significant challenges to human health and socio-economic development. In recent years, the incidence of cancer has shown a trend toward younger populations, drawing attention to cancer prevention education among college students. However, research on the specific impact of cancer prevention education on the mental health of college students is limited. This study aims to explore the impact of cancer prevention education on the mental health of college students, revealing the mediating role of disease awareness and the moderating roles of psychological resilience and cultural differences., Methods: A difference-in-differences (DID) approach was used, involving 1,670 freshmen from a Chinese university, divided into an experimental group ( n = 835) and a control group ( n = 835). The experimental group received a semester-long cancer prevention education program. Data were collected monthly from November 2022 to June 2023 using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) and a custom Disease Awareness Scale., Results: The study found a significant improvement in mental health scores among the experimental group, with an average increase of 14.738 points on the DASS-21 scale ( p < 0.001), representing a 23% reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression levels compared to the control group. Disease awareness in the experimental group improved by 17%, as measured by the Disease Awareness Scale, with a mediation effect of 3.563 points ( p < 0.001). Furthermore, psychological resilience and cultural differences moderated the impact of the education program, with those scoring higher in resilience showing an additional 8% improvement in mental health scores (moderation effect = 0.892, p < 0.001), and cultural differences accounting for a 5% variance (moderation effect = 0.756, p < 0.001) in the outcomes., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that systematic and scientific cancer prevention education has a significant positive impact on the mental health of college students. Universities should promote comprehensive and personalized health education strategies to improve disease awareness, foster psychological resilience, and emphasize cultural differences, thereby enhancing the overall physical and mental health of college students and promoting their holistic development. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and among the most prevalent diseases globally, with an incidence expected to grow because of smoking, pollution, poor dietary habits, obesity, and the rise in the older population. Given their ability to reduce risk factors, albeit with varying efficacy, nutrition and fasting could help prevent cancer and other age-related disorders. Calorie restriction (CR), various forms of intermittent fasting (IF) or periodic fasting (PF), and fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) have been shown to improve health span, increase lifespan, and prevent or postpone cancer in rodents. The effects of specific diets and fasting regimens on aging and cancer appear to be mediated in part by the reduction in the activity of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like-growth-factor-I (IGF-1) axis. Nevertheless, recent data indicate that the alternation of low and normal levels of these hormones and factors may be ideal for optimizing longevity and function. Here, we review the role of nutrition, CR, and fasting/FMD on cancer, focusing on the hypothesis that the modulation of GH, IGF-1, and insulin signaling partly mediates the effect of these dietary interventions on cancer prevention.

Multi-Cancer Early Detection is a highly popular topic, bringing the hope of being able to detect very early, non-symptomatic cancers and allowing more successful therapy. Previous studies have proved that healthy behaviors hinder the onset and progression of tumors. Digital therapeutics (DTx), playing a pivotal role in facilitating behavioral adjustments through educational interventions, lifestyle support, and symptom monitoring, contribute to the goal of tumor prevention. We aim to optimize the evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of DTx for cancer prevention. This involves assessing AITI's daily activity rates and user feedback, and comparing changes in behavioral habits and differences in SF-36 before and after the intervention. In a 4-week trial with 57 participants engaging actively, we found both the average daily activity rate and 4-week retention rate at 35 (61.4%). The USE Questionnaire scores (validity, ease of use, acquisition, and satisfaction) ranged from 68.06 to 83.10, indicating AITI's user-friendliness and acceptability. Furthermore, positive habit changes were noted among participants in exercise and diet (p < 0.0001), suggesting the effectiveness of the DTx approach in modifying behavioral habits related to physical activity and nutrition. In this comprehensive review we tried to reassess the role of phytochemicals in cancer chemoprevention. The exploration of the "synergistic effect" concept, advocating combined chemopreventive agents, faces challenges like low bioavailability. The review incorporates personal, occasionally controversial, viewpoints on natural compounds' cancer preventive capabilities, delving into mechanisms. Prioritizing significant contributions within the vast research domain, we aim stimulating discussion to provide a comprehensive insight into the evolving role of phytochemicals in cancer prevention. While early years downplayed the role of phytochemicals, the late nineties witnessed a shift, with leaders exploring their potential alongside synthetic compounds. Challenges faced by chemoprevention, such as limited pharmaceutical interest and cost-effectiveness issues, persist despite successful drugs. Recent studies, including the EPIC study, provide nuanced insights, indicating a modest risk reduction for increased fruit and vegetable intake. Phytochemicals, once attributed to antioxidant effects, face scrutiny due to low bioavailability and conflicting evidence. Background and Aim: Lead (Pb) is a toxic heavy metal and pervasive environmental contaminant, and a class 2 A carcinogen according to the IARC classification, yet its link with cancer at several body sites remains uncertain. Here, we aimed at summarizing the scientific evidence regarding its association with cancer risk and mortality, focusing on studies that carried out Pb measurements in biological samples., Methods: We reviewed articles published in PubMed and EMBASE until January 2nd, 2024, that quantified the epidemiological association between Pb measured in blood, urine, nails, and other biological media, and cancer risk and mortality (overall and by cancer site/type)., Results: We included 46 articles (out of 8022 screened) published in 1995-2023 and reporting on investigations conducted in fifteen countries. In terms of design, 20 were prospective, 24 were retrospective case-control studies, and 2 were cross-sectional. Pb levels were determined in blood in the majority of studies (n=28). The most consistent evidence was for the association of Pb with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the oesophagus, stomach (RR ranging from 0.80 to 2.66), colon-rectum, and pancreas; and of the bladder and urinary tract (RR from 1.10 to 2.89). For other specific malignancies, the data were conflicting or too limited to draw reliable conclusions. Finally, increased Pb concentration in blood and urine was consistently associated with higher overall cancer incidence and mortality., Conclusions: Lead is a widespread and highly persistent environmental pollutant associated with cancer at multiple body sites. Background: We proposed the Physical Activity and Cancer Control (PACC) framework in 2007 to help organise, focus, and stimulate research on physical activity in eight cancer control categories: prevention, detection, treatment preparation/coping, treatment coping/effectiveness, recovery/rehabilitation, disease prevention/health promotion, palliation, and survival., Methods: This perspective paper provides a high-level overview of the scientific advances in physical activity research across cancer control categories, summarises current guidelines, updates the PACC framework, identifies remaining and emerging knowledge gaps, and provides future research directions., Results: Many scientific advances have been made that are reflected in updated physical activity guidelines for six of the cancer control categories apart from detection and palliation. Nevertheless, the minimal and optimal type, dose, and timing of physical activity across cancer control categories remain unknown, especially for the understudied population subgroups defined by cancer type, age, race/ethnicity, and resource level of regions/countries., Conclusion: To achieve the full benefit of physical activity in cancer control, future research should use innovative study designs that include diverse at-risk populations and understudied cancer sites. Issue Addressed: One third of cancers are potentially preventable by modifying key risk factors that arise during adolescence. To help inform prevention efforts, we investigated adolescents' understanding of cancer risk factors, symptoms and signs and barriers to help-seeking., Methods: Nine focus groups were conducted with purposefully sampled, binary-gendered friendship groups of 12 to 17-year-olds. Interviews were analysed using a qualitative descriptive method based on the topic schedule, transcripts and field notes., Results: Behavioural, genetic and environmental factors were commonly explored as risk factors. Most cancer symptoms identified focused on physical indicators, such as lumps and skin appearance. Facilitators and barriers to good health choices involved both external and internal factors: education, affordability, attitudes and the social environment. Most participants indicated they would talk to trusted friends and family members about health issues, but only when the condition became 'serious'. The most common source of health information was the internet., Conclusions: Adolescents have a good understanding of behavioural risk factors, but poor knowledge of some key cancer symptoms. A support system was recognised to be a substantive factor in dealing with health issues, as were youth-focused health services. Understanding of the preventability of many cancers was not widespread with participants. SO WHAT?: The results emphasise a requirement for appropriate, affordable and accessible youth-focused health services. There is a need for age- and culturally appropriate interventions that improve knowledge of cancer symptoms. With the escalating prevalence of obesity, the association between obesity and cancer is a growing public health concern. Obesity will soon surpass tobacco smoking as the most important preventable cause of cancer. Obesity-driven mechanisms can alter cell functions to induce metabolic changes, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance that are believed to contribute to cancer risk and development; yet the specific underlying biological mechanisms of obesity-related cancer development are largely unknown. The Metabolic Dysregulation and Cancer Risk Program: a transdisciplinary approach to obesity-associated cancers (MeDOC) is a trans-National Cancer Institute research initiative supported by the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences, the Division of Cancer Biology, the Division of Cancer Prevention, and the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. The overall purpose of the MeDOC Program is to advance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms that connect obesity, metabolic dysregulation, and increased obesity cancer risk as well as identify markers that will enhance cancer risk prediction, improve screening for high-risk individuals, and identify targets for preventive and therapeutic interventions for cancer interception or treatment. Background: The effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on cancer has yet to be fully elucidated., Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on cancer., Methods: We searched the PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov databases up to July 15, 2023, to identify eligible randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that lasted at least ≥24 weeks. The primary outcome was the overall cancer incidence, and the secondary outcomes were the incidences of various types of cancer. We used the Mantel-Haenszel method, fixed effects model, risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to analyze dichotomous variables. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the SGLT2 inhibitor type, baseline conditions, and follow-up duration. All meta-analyses were performed using RevMan5.4.1 and Stata MP 16.0., Results: A total of 58 publications (59 trials) were included, comprising 113,909 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or chronic kidney disease and/or high cardiovascular risk and/or heart failure (SGLT2 inhibitor group, 63864; placebo group, 50045). Compared to the placebo SGLT2 inhibitors did not significantly increase the overall incidence of cancer (RR 1.01; 95% CI 0.94-1.08; p = 0.82). However, ertugliflozin did significantly increase the overall incidence of cancer (RR 1.29; 95% CI 1.01-1.64; p = 0.04). SGLT2 inhibitors did not increase the risks of bladder or breast cancer. However, dapagliflozin did significantly reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 47% (RR 0.53; 95% CI 0.35-0.81; p = 0.003). SGLT2 inhibitors had no significant effect on the risks of gastrointestinal, thyroid, skin, respiratory, prostate, uterine/endometrial, hepatic and pancreatic cancers. Dapagliflozin reduced the risk of respiratory cancer by 26% (RR 0.74; 95% CI 0.55-1.00; p = 0.05). SGLT2 inhibitors (particularly mediated by dapagliflozin and ertugliflozin but not statistically significant) were associated with a greater risk of renal cancer than the placebo (RR 1.39; 95% CI 1.04-1.87; p = 0.03)., Conclusion: SGLT2 inhibitors did not significantly increase the overall risk of cancer or the risks of bladder and breast cancers. Background: Dietary flavonoids may have potential effects on hormone-related cancers (HRCs) due to their anti-cancer properties via regulating hormones and suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress. We aimed to examine the association of flavonoid intake with risks of HRCs and whether this association was mediated by blood biomarkers involved in biological mechanisms., Methods: This prospective cohort study from UK Biobank included 187,350 participants free of cancer when the last dietary recall was completed. The dietary intakes of flavonoids and subclasses were assessed using 24-hour dietary recalls. Venous blood was collected at baseline and assayed for biomarkers of inflammation, hormones, and oxidative stress. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidential intervals (CI) for the associations between flavonoid intake and HRCs risk were estimated by the cause-specific Cox proportional hazards model. The role of blood biomarkers in the flavonoids-HRCs association was investigated through mediation analysis., Results: Over a median follow-up of 9.5 years, 3,392 female breast cancer, 417 ovarian cancer, 516 endometrial cancer, 4,305 prostate cancer, 45 testicular cancer, and 146 thyroid cancer cases were documented. Compared to the lowest quintile, multivariable-adjusted HRs (95 % CIs) in the highest quintile of total flavonoid intake were 0.89 (0.80-0.99) for breast cancer, 0.68 (0.50-0.92) for ovarian cancer, and 0.88 (0.80-0.98) for female-specific cancers. For subclasses, intakes of flavonols and anthocyanidins were inversely associated with the risk of female-specific cancers (P trend <0.05). Anthocyanidin intake was positively related to prostate cancer risk, whereas isoflavone intake was inversely linked to thyroid cancer risk (P trend <0.05). Introduction: Vitamin D3, which originates from cholesterol, exerts its influence on immune cells and potentially cancer cells via the metabolite 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25(OH)2D3), impacting their proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. An umbrella review was conducted to evaluate the potential protective effect of vitamin D3 intake and serum levels on the incidence and mortality of cancer., Material and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and EMBASE databases from their inception to October 1, 2023. We included meta-analyses of observational or randomized clinical trials that compared interventions (vitamin D3 intake) or blood levels in a healthy population, with cancer incidence or mortality as outcomes. The grading of evidence certainty followed established criteria, including strong, highly suggestive, suggestive, weak, or not significant., Results: A total of 71 systematic reviews were included. Strong evidence indicated that vitamin D3 supplementation reduced total cancer mortality (odds ratio [OR], 0.9 [95% CI, 0.87-0.92]; P < 0.01). In the context of site-specific cancers, there exists highly suggestive evidence pointing towards the potential prevention of head and neck, breast, colorectal, lung, and renal cell cancers through the intake of vitamin D3. Furthermore, strong evidence suggests that maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D3 may effectively lower the risk of renal cell and thyroid cancer (OR = 0.76 [95%CI 0.64-0.88])., Conclusions: There is significant evidence that vitamin D3 intake may reduce the incidence of some cancers. The aim of the present study is to conduct an evidence-based evaluation of the fraction of cancers attributable to and prevented by exogenous hormonal (i.e., combined oral contraceptives [COC] and combined estrogen-progestogen menopausal therapy [CEPMT]) and reproductive factors (i.e., parity and breastfeeding) in Italy., Study Design: We calculated the population attributable and prevented fractions combining relative risks and prevalence of exposure in Italian women. Italian cancer incidence and mortality data were extracted from national sources and used to estimate the number of cancer cases and deaths attributable to reproductive factors and exogenous hormones in Italy in 2020. For long-term effects, a 20-year latency period was considered., Results: COC were responsible for 4.4 % of breast and 10.9 % of cervical cancers in women aged 15-44, but also avoided 6.4 % of endometrial, 5.6 % of ovarian, and 2.9 % of colorectal cancers in women of all ages. Overall, COC use prevented 1174 cancer diagnoses and 577 cancer deaths. CEPMT caused 0.4 % of breast cancers at age 45-69. Low parity accounted for 8.1 %, 11.8 % and 15.5 % of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers, respectively (6267 cases, 1796 deaths). Cancer screening behaviors in Muslims are under-researched, and there is limited data on how it relates to their unique cultural and religious beliefs. We assessed cancer prevention and screening-related health needs in the Washington DC area. We developed the needs assessment questionnaires and recruitment strategy in collaboration with key faith leaders from four mosques in our catchment area. A total of 203 participants were recruited through community outreach and engagement approaches and were included in the discussion when developing the needs assessment to ensure questions were religiously and culturally sensitive. Of the 203 participants, 56% of women reported receiving screening for a mammogram, while 83% of women reported receiving a screening for cervical cancer. Among men, 45% reported receiving a prostate cancer antigen test to screen for prostate cancer. Among both men and women, 35% reported ever receiving a screening for colorectal cancer. Women reported relying more on their faith when dealing with health concerns than men. Those who did not get screened for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer relied more on their faith than those who did get screened for these cancers. Participants expressed interest in having health initiatives around cancer education, screening, and survivorship inside mosques. Faith beliefs can influence cancer screening behaviors; however, the relationship between these two variables needs further examination. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements have exhibited inconsistent effects on cancer risk, and their potential efficacy as cancer preventive agents has been increasingly questioned, especially in recent large randomized clinical trials. The role of host factors that govern EPA and DHA metabolism in relation to their impact on carcinogenesis remains understudied. Resolvins, the products of EPA and DHA oxidative metabolism, demonstrate intriguing antitumorigenic effects through mechanisms such as promoting macrophage phagocytosis of cell debris and inhibiting the production of proinflammatory chemokines and cytokines by tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which are crucial for cancer progression. However, clinical studies have not yet shown a significant increase in target tissue levels of resolvins with EPA and DHA supplementation. 15-Lipoxygenase-1 (ALOX15), a key enzyme in EPA and DHA oxidative metabolism, is often lost in various major human cancers, including precancerous and advanced colorectal cancers. Further research is needed to elucidate whether the loss of ALOX15 expression in colorectal precancerous and cancerous cells affects EPA and DHA oxidative metabolism, the formation of resolvins, and subsequently carcinogenesis. Residents are actively involved in patient assessment and all aspects of patient care, and they are critical in providing nutritional support education and treatment for patients with cancer. This study aims to assess the nutritional knowledge and performance of resident physicians, providing insights into existing gaps in awareness and practices related to cancer nutrition. A total of 300 resident physicians undergoing standardized residency training in China participated in this study. An anonymous online questionnaire covering demographic characteristics, nutritional knowledge, clinical practice, and training requirements was designed and administered through the "Wenjuanxing" platform. Data were collected from June 1, 2023, to July 31, 2023. Among the participants, only 40.00% demonstrated adequate knowledge of cancer nutrition, and merely 32.00% exhibited proficient performance in nutritional care. Socio-demographic analysis revealed that residents without affiliations and those specializing in obstetrics and gynecology had superior knowledge, while surgery specialists showed significantly worse performance. Most participants expressed a lack of exposure to cancer nutrition education during academic and standardized residency training. The study highlights the demand for enhanced education and the preference for case-based teaching methods. The findings underscore an urgent need for comprehensive oncology nutrition education within China's standardized residency training. Targeted interventions and curriculum enhancements are essential to improve medical talent development and enhance patient care outcomes in oncology. Background: Health equity can lead to disparities in cancer screening, treatment, and mortality. This systematic review aims to identify and describe interventions that used video or DVD formats to reduce health inequity in cancer screening and review the effectiveness of such interventions in increasing screening rates compared to usual care conditions., Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases for randomized control trials (RCTs) published until 18/01/2023 that compared intervention versus usual care control groups, with the percentage of cancer screening uptake during follow-up as an outcome. The risk of Bias was assessed with the Cochrane Collaboration tool., Results: After screening 4201 abstracts, 192 full texts were assessed for eligibility and 18 were included that focused on colorectal (n = 9), cervical (n = 5), breast (n = 5), and prostate (n = 1) cancer screening. All were based in the USA except one and most focused on ethnicity/race, while some included low-income populations. Most of the video interventions used to increase cervical cancer screening reported positive results. Studies aimed at increasing mammography uptake were mostly effective only in specific groups of participants, such as low-income or less-educated African American women. Results for colorectal cancer screening were conflicting. Videos that were culturally tailored or used emotive format were generally more effective than information-only videos., Conclusions: Video interventions to increase cancer screening among populations with low screening uptake show some positive effects, though results are mixed. Objective: Understand if cancer fatalism among adult social media users in the United States is linked to social media informational awareness and if the relationship varies by education level., Methods: Cross-sectional data from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey (n = 3,948) were analyzed using multivariable linear probability models. The study population was defined as social media users active within the past year. The outcome variable was cancer fatalism and the predictor variables were social media informational awareness and education level., Results: Participants with low social media informational awareness were 9% (95% CI = 3, 15), 6% (95% CI = 1, 11), and 21% (95% CI = 14, 27) percentage points more likely to agree that it seems like everything causes cancer, you cannot lower your chances of getting cancer, and there are too many cancer prevention recommendations to follow, respectively. Participants with a college degree or higher level of education and who reported high social media informational awareness were the least likely to agree that everything causes cancer (60%; 95% CI = 54, 66), you cannot lower your chances of getting cancer (14%; 95% CI = 10, 19), and there are too many cancer prevention recommendations to follow (52%; 95% CI = 46, 59)., Conclusion: Social media informational awareness was associated with lower levels of cancer fatalism among adult social media users. Cancer is a leading cause of mortality globally and is projected to be the primary cause of death in Brazil by 2030. Yet, for high school students, information and understanding about cancer are primarily offered through standard biology lessons. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a brief educational intervention related to cancer among high school students in a Brazilian private school. Participants attended a 1-h online session regarding different aspects of cancer. A self-reported questionnaire about the main topics addressed in the session was filled out before [pre] and after [post] the educational intervention and the results were compared by McNemar's chi-square test. From 900 parents invited, 44 (4.9%) responded to the invitation and agreed with their children's participation, and 24 students attended the activity. The questionnaire was easy to fill out for the students and allowed us to measure differences after the educational intervention. The high school students considered the most interesting topics cancer myths and protective/risk factors. The project was feasible and showed easy application and better knowledge after the educational intervention. The main challenge is related to the access to parents to authorize their children's participation. Designing interventions that focus on cancer education might be a viable way to increase prevention and early diagnosis with implications for students, their families, and the community., (© 2024. Rice (Oryza sativa) is a staple food crop with a rich history and significant contributions to global nutrition. Rice bran's potential as a dietary supplement, particularly in addressing nutrient deficiencies and diseases, is highlighted. Arsenic contamination, a critical food safety issue, is discussed, as their accumulation poses significant risks, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and developmental problems. This overview addresses aflatoxin and arsenic contamination, threatening rice's safety and by-products. The structure and characteristics of rice bran, including types of grain polishing, stabilization processes, and toxic elements, are also analyzed. Factors affecting the bioavailability of nutrients, such as pesticide residues and storage conditions, are considered. The review emphasizes the antioxidant properties of rice milling by-products, particularly pigmented rice varieties rich in bioactive compounds. It offers health benefits such as cancer prevention, anti-diarrheal effects, and anti-diabetic properties.
