In this work, long-time operation of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) characterized by a single thin dielectric was investigated. The discharge was operated under nitrogen at atmospheric pressure in a typical filamentary regime. Electrical measurements were performed, i.e. applied voltage, current and charge were retrieved. The Lissajous figure method combined with an equivalent circuit of the DBD was used to calculate the dissipated power, estimate the gas gap voltage V g , evaluate the deposited charges Q 0 as well as the capacitances of the discharge cell. The results over a one-hour operation indicated that the total dissipated power remained constant, but a decrease of the gas gap voltage with an increase of the charge deposited was also depicted. For the capacitances, both dielectric and cell capacitances variations were studied from the Lissajous figures. This work examines the growth dynamics of TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposite coatings in plane-to-plane Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBDs) at atmospheric pressure operated in a Townsend regime using nebulized TiO2 colloidal suspension in hexamethyldisiloxane as the growth precursors. For low-frequency (LF) sinusoidal voltages applied to the DBD cell, with voltage amplitudes lower than the one required for discharge breakdown, Scanning Electron Microscopy of silicon substrates placed on the bottom DBD electrode reveals significant deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) close to the discharge entrance. On the other hand, at higher frequencies (HF), the number of TiO2 NPs deposited strongly decreases due to their "trapping" in the oscillating voltage and their transport along the gas flow lines. Based on these findings, a combined LF-HF voltage waveform is proposed and used to achieve significant and spatially uniform deposition of TiO2 NPs across the whole substrate surface. For higher voltage amplitudes, in the presence of hexamethyldisiloxane and nitrous oxide for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of inorganic layers, it is found that TiO2 NPs become fully embedded into a silica-like matrix. Similar Raman spectra are obtained for as-prepared TiO2 NPs and for nanocomposite TiO2-SiO2 coating, suggesting that plasma exposure does not significantly alter the crystalline structure of the TiO2 NPs injected into the discharge. This study focus on the upgrading of SLon concentrates, of a complex African iron ore, with the aid of flotation. Mineralogical studies indicated that the +38µm material was not liberated and required milling prior to flotation. The -38µm material was well liberated and was close to the required product specification, with a Fe content of 99.7% of the target grade. The proposed beneficiation process includes de-sliming (38µm) of the SLon concentrate and milling of the +38µm material, followed by froth flotation. The new proposed flow diagram showed that the SLon concentrate of this African iron ore can successfully be upgraded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new diagnostic tool to study dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) at atmospheric pressure by local electrical measurements is introduced. The square ground electrode is divided into 64 square segments (3.44 mm side length) so as to measure the discharge currents and gas voltages with spatial resolutions, which allows a 2D mapping. The electrical measurement results are validated by a comparison with short exposure time photographs taken from the top view of the discharge cell. For this purpose, we changed the local discharge behavior by varying locally the gas gap and the barrier capacitance and also by using a gas flow. Then, in both situations, the breakdown voltage depends on the position, and the discharge current and gas voltage are different as well. The measurements performed for a planar DBD in nitrogen with admixed nitrous oxide gas show that even if the discharge operates in a diffuse regime, the discharge does not behave exactly homogeneously on the whole surface area. The resulting electrical parameters allow us to refine the understanding of planar DBDs. The discharge activity changes the gas composition and thus, the level of preionization in the direction of the gas flow. This influences the local breakdown voltage and thus, the discharge morphology and local power density on the surface. The use of this new electrical diagnostic tool will allow us to refine the analysis of the spatial development of the discharge. This work gives some clues to improve the spatial resolution of this tool in the future.

Objectives: There has been an increase in Caesarean section rates in many developed countries with maternal request frequently being cited as a reason. There are few studies examining African women's preference for mode of delivery. The objectives this study were to determine women's preference for mode of delivery in a low risk population to describe the major reasons for their preferences., Study Design: Women over the age of 18 with a singleton low risk pregnancy were recruited during the third trimester. Two trained interviewers conducted a questionnaire in the women's preferred language regarding her preference for mode of delivery., Results: Of the 195 women that participated, 160 (82.1 %) indicated a preference for vaginal delivery, 5 (2.6 %) preferred a Caesarean delivery, and 30 women (15.4 %) were unsure about their preferred mode of delivery. There was a significant association between delivery preference and age, ethnicity and HIV status. Level of education, employment, income, relationship status, and parity demonstrated no statistical association. In addition, 106 (54.4 %) did not believe that women should be given the right to request a Caesarean section., Conclusion: The majority of women prefer to have a vaginal delivery. With the rapid development and proliferation of mobile devices with powerful computing power and the ability of integrating sensors into mobile devices, the potential impact of mobile health (mHealth) diagnostics on the public health is drawing researchers' attention. We developed a Smartphone Octo-channel Spectrometer (SOS) as a mHealth diagnostic tool. The SOS has nanoscale wavelength resolution, is self-illuminated from the smartphone itself, and is ultra-low cost (less than $20). A user interface controls the optical sensing parameters and precise alignment. After calibrating and testing the SOS by quantifying protein concentrations, we clinically validated the SOS by comparing the diagnostic performance of our device with that of a clinical spectrophotometer. About 180 serum samples from de-identified patients with 4 types of autoantibodies were blindly read the ELISA results. The accuracy of the SOS achieved 100% across the clinical reportable range compared with the FDA-approved instrument. Furthermore, the self-illuminated SOS only requires about half of the light intensity of the FDA-approved instrument to achieve clinical-level sensitivity. The low-energy-consumption and low-cost SOS enables point-of-care spectrophotometric sensing in low-resource areas, and can be integrated into point-of-care diagnostic systems for rapid multiplex readout and analysis at patient bedside or at home., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Most mobile health (mHealth) diagnostic devices for laboratory tests only analyze one sample at a time, which is not suitable for large volume serology testing, especially in low-resource settings with shortage of health professionals. In this study, we developed an ultra-low-cost clinically-accurate mobile phone microplate reader (mReader), and clinically validated this optical device for 12 infectious disease tests. The mReader optically reads 96 samples on a microplate at one time. 771 de-identified patient samples were tested for 12 serology assays for bacterial/viral infections. The mReader and the clinical instrument blindly read and analyzed all tests in parallel. The analytical accuracy and the diagnostic performance of the mReader were evaluated across the clinical reportable categories by comparison with clinical laboratorial testing results. The mReader exhibited 97.59-99.90% analytical accuracy and <5% coefficient of variation (CV). The positive percent agreement (PPA) in all 12 tests achieved 100%, negative percent agreement (NPA) was higher than 83% except for one test (42.86%), and overall percent agreement (OPA) ranged 89.33-100%. We envision the mReader can benefit underserved areas/populations and low-resource settings in rural clinics/hospitals at a low cost (~$50 USD) with clinical-level analytical quality. Molecular pathways involved in dauer formation, an alternate larval stage that allows Caenorhabditis elegans to survive adverse environmental conditions during development, also modulate longevity and metabolism. The decision to proceed with reproductive development or undergo diapause depends on food abundance, population density, and temperature. In recent years, the chemical identities of pheromone signals that modulate dauer entry have been characterized. However, signals derived from bacteria, the major source of nutrients for C. elegans, remain poorly characterized. To systematically identify bacterial components that influence dauer formation and aging in C. elegans, we utilized the individual gene deletion mutants in E. coli (K12). We identified 56 diverse E. coli deletion mutants that enhance dauer formation in an insulin-like receptor mutant (daf-2) background. We describe the mechanism of action of a bacterial mutant cyaA, that is defective in the production of cyclic AMP, which extends lifespan and enhances dauer formation through the modulation of TGF-β (daf-7) signaling in C. elegans. Our results demonstrate the importance of bacterial components in influencing developmental decisions and lifespan in C. elegans. Furthermore, we demonstrate that C. elegans is a useful model to study bacterial-host interactions.
