Purpose: To evaluate via CBCT the anatomical variations of the maxillary teeth and associated major anatomical cavities, the maxillary sinus and nasal fossa. Material and Methods: CBCT scans of 221 patients were used to examine maxillary sinus variations, the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) course, nasal septum variations, middle and inferior conchameatus variations, canalis sinuosus, infraorbital ethmoid cell, infraorbital canal, anterior nasal spina, and nasopalatine canal. Results: The incidence of anatomical variations was 32.6% for maxillary sinus septa, 50.9% for PSAA, 23.1% for nasal septum deviation, 6.3% for nasal septum spur and pneumatization, 3.6% for paradoxical middle concha, 14.9% for middle concha hypertrophy, 39.6% for middle concha bullosa, 0.45% for bifid inferior concha, 0.9% for paradoxical inferior concha, 60.1% for inferior conch hypertrophy, 1.8% for inferior concha bullosa, and 40.3% for the infraorbital ethmoid cell. The study mainly observed group 2 anterior nasal spina with a rate of 35.7%, group 1 nasopalatine canal with a rate of 37.1%, and infraorbital duct type 2 with a rate of 70%. In 20.4% and 47% of cases, canalis sinuosus was located in the right and left sides of the maxilla, respectively. Conclusions: Maxillary sinus variations, PSAA prevalence and localization, nasal septum and concha variations, anterior nasal spina subgroups, nasopalatine canal subgroups, canalis sinuosus prevalence, and localization and infraorbital ethmoid cell prevalence were found to be consistent with the literature. Moreover, a rare case of the lower bifid concha was identified. The nasomaxillary complex and related dental structures, which are a multidisciplinary study area, should be carefully examined in the presence of pain of unknown origin and the planning of surgical procedures. Objective(s): It was the first study to apply and compare two CT methods to assess the validity and clinical significance of structural alterations of the nasal valve in patients with cleft lip nose for assessing nasal ventilation disturbance. Methods: The study collected data from the NOSE score, as well as internal nasal valve area, internal nasal valve angle, external nasal valve area, and septal deviation angle, to evaluate the differences and correlations between those factors in patients with cleft lip and nose. Results: There were significant differences among INV transverse and coronal area and INV angle on different axial standardized planes between clefted side and non-clefted side. There were statistically significant negative correlations between NOSE scores and those indicators of standard plane and acoustic-axis standardized coronal plane. NOSE score and NSD angle were the indicators of significant differences in the measured data of different complications groups (p = 0.002, p = 0.017). The correlation comparison showed that two standardized CT imaging transverse planes have similar correlations in NOSE score, NSD angle, and complications. Conclusion: The results of the two CT evaluation methods showed that there was a significant difference in nasal valve area on the cleft and non-cleft sides, which was significantly associated with nasal ventilation disturbance. The CT evaluation method based on standard axial 3D reconstruction is more convenient to use in the clinic, can be used for pre-surgical evaluation of nasal repair in patients with secondary nasal deformities of unilateral cleft lip, and is valuable for treatment. Purpose: The nasal foramen is located in the nasal bone and for vessels passage to supply the nasal area. This project aimed to establish reliable references for the nasal foramina for future clinical applications. Methods: The 72 dried skulls, 46 from the Division of Anatomy, University of Phayao, Thailand, and 26 from the Tulane University School of Medicine, USA, were collected and examined. The location, number, and sizes of nasal foramina were noted. The distances from each nasal foramen to the internasal suture, frontonasal suture, nasomaxillary suture, nasion, and rhinion were also recorded and used in the statistical analytical programs. Results: The most common type of nasal foramen in all skulls was type II (one external opening) at 65.97%, followed by type I (no foramen opening) at 20.83%, type III (two external openings) at 11.11% and type IV at 2.08% (three external openings). Nasal foramen subtypes in many of the Thai and American skulls were type IIb and type IIa. The diameter of a connecting nasal foramen was significantly larger than that of a non-connecting. Results from embalmed confirmed the passage of the external nasal artery through the nasal cavity. Conclusion: The study shows no significant difference in nasal foramen morphometry between Thai and American. It illustrates recent data on type and subtype classifications and the location of a vascular passage through the nasal foramen. Objective: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is commonly treated by surgery, albeit with limited success. Herein, we introduce our experience of applying a newly developed "3D‐printed nasal plug" as an alternative conservative treatment modality. Methods: This retrospective study included 20 patients (14 males, 6 females; mean age 46.5 ± 13.5 years) with ENS who underwent the application of the 3D‐printed nasal plug at Asan Medical Center between June 2022 and May 2023. Symptom improvement was assessed by Empty Nose Syndrome 6‐Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q) before and after applying the nasal plug. Clinical results, such as duration and frequency of plug use, discomfort, and level of satisfaction, were investigated. Results: The mean follow‐up duration was 40.3 ± 24.2 weeks. The average duration of nasal plug usage was 10.8 h per day and 5.3 days a week. The ENS6Q scores improved from 19.6 ± 4.6 to 6.8 ± 5.1 (mean reduction 12.8 ± 5.9) after 30 minutes of wearing. Symptom "nose feelings too open" was improved most by a score of 3.0 ± 1.5 (p < 0.001). Thirteen patients (65.0%) reported that the effectiveness of the plug, initially confirmed at the first wearing, was well maintained during the entire follow‐up. Four patients (20.0%) wore the nasal plug uninterruptedly throughout the week, whereas nine patients (45.0%) wore it intermittently as needed. Frequently reported complaints with plug usage were 'displacement of the plug' and 'cosmetic concerns' about the visible hook portion. Mesiodens, which emerge towards the nasal cavity, often require consultation in maxillofacial practice. Typically accessed through wide palatal flaps with ostectomy, this method involves limited visibility and poses the risk of damaging the roots and apex of adjacent dental structures. This study advocates a minimally invasive technique that involves vestibulotomy between the central incisors, facilitating direct and rapid access through nasal floor dissection, minimizing comorbidities. A systematic review was performed, following the PRISMA guidelines, apropos on ten clinical cases reported in this study. The MEDLINE/Pubmed and Web of Science databases were searched. Several variables were considered and are presented comprehensively in tables and figures. Additionally, 10 case reports with mesiodens in the maxilla were submitted to surgical treatment using a minimally invasive intraoral transnasal disinclusion. The initial literature search resulted in 37 articles, of which 9 met the inclusion criteria for the analysis. Regarding postoperative complications, no bone exposure, incisor root damage, extensive surgical approach, palatal or vestibular hematoma, or palatal necrosis was observed. However, 10% experienced superficial damage to the nasopalatine neurovascular, while 80% and 20% presented mild and moderate postoperative facial edema, respectively. Hypoesthesia in 20% of patients recovered in the first week, 40% in the first month and 40% at 3 months. The minimally invasive intraoral, transnasal, non-endoscopic approach emerges as a safe and predictable alternative to conventional surgical techniques. Tumors located in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and the skull base comprise a wide range of histologic subtypes. Among them, neuroendocrine and undifferentiated tumors are rare but noteworthy, because of their distinctive features, aggressive nature, and diagnostic complexities. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE and the Scopus databases from 2019 until inception. The keywords "neuroendocrine", "undifferentiated", "nose", "sinonasal", "paranasal", "skull base" were used. Thirty-eight articles referring to neuroendocrine and undifferentiated tumors of the nose, paranasal sinuses and the skull base were finally included and analyzed. Neuroendocrine and undifferentiated tumors of the nose, paranasal sinuses and the skull base are infrequent malignancies, most commonly affecting middle-aged men. They usually present with non-specific symptoms, even though ocular or neurologic manifestations may occur. Prognosis is generally poor; however, novel targeted and immunological therapies have shown promising results. Sinonasal Neuroendocrine Carcinomas (SNECs) carry distinct histological and immunohistochemical features. Management consists of surgical resection coupled with systematic therapy. Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinomas (SNUCs) lack specific squamous or glandular features. They typically stain positive for pancytokeratin and INI1 antibody. Treatment includes induction chemotherapy, followed by a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Olfactory neuroblastomas (ONBs) have neuroepithelial or neuroblastic features. They show diffuse positivity for various markers, including synaptophysin, chromogranin, and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Surgical resection plus radiotherapy is considered the treatment of choice. In conclusion, neuroendocrine and undifferentiated tumors arising from the nose, paranasal sinuses and the skull base represent a unique group of malignancies. A thorough understanding of their clinical features, molecular changes, diagnostic approaches, treatment modalities, and prognostic factors is critical for providing optimal patient care. Purpose: Button battery nasal impactions pose serious risks due to complications and the need for prompt removal, yet research on interventions remains limited due to its rare occurrence. To delineate the clinical manifestations of nasal foreign bodies associated with button batteries and to explore treatment approaches focused on minimizing the reliance on general anesthesia and surgical interventions. Methods: This study focuses on 176 cases of children who received treatment for nasal cavity button battery impactions. It encompasses various factors including age, gender, battery location, impaction duration, methods of extraction, and associated complications. Results: The incidence of nasal button battery cases among nasal foreign body instances was 1.16%, with a majority being males (60.23%) aged 1–5 years (98.29%). Utilizing a specially designed nasal foreign body hook and following established treatment protocols enabled the successful outpatient management of the majority of cases. Only 12 cases (6.82%) necessitated removal under general anesthesia due to management challenges in an outpatient setting. Furthermore, our findings indicated no linear correlation between the duration of battery retention and the risk of nasal septal perforation, which was observed in 31 cases (17.61%). Conclusion: Nasal foreign bodies caused by button batteries in children demand urgent attention due to their potentially grave outcomes. Our research is directed towards enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to bolster the success rates of outpatient removal, curtail the duration of foreign body retention, and diminish the reliance on general anesthesia. Chronic rhinitis (CR) is a frustrating clinical syndrome in dogs and our understanding of the disease pathogenesis in is limited. Increasingly, host– microbe interactions are considered key drives of clinical disease in sites of persistent mucosal inflammation such as the nasal and oral cavities. Therefore, we applied next generation sequencing tools to interrogate abnormalities present in the nose of dogs with CR and compared immune and microbiome profiles to those of healthy dogs. Host nasal cell transcriptomes were evaluated by RNA sequencing, while microbial communities were assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Correlation analysis was then used to identify significant interactions between nasal cell transcriptomes and the nasal microbiome and how these interactions were altered in animals with CR. Notably, we observed significant downregulation of multiple genes associated with ciliary function in dogs with CR, suggesting a previously undetected role for ciliary dysfunction in this syndrome. We also found significant upregulation of immune genes related to the TNF-α and interferon pathways. The nasal microbiome was also significantly altered in CR dogs, with overrepresentation of several potential pathobionts. Interactome analysis revealed significant correlations between bacteria in the genus Porphyromonas and the upregulated host inflammatory responses in dogs with CR, as well as defective ciliary function which was correlated with Streptococcus abundance. These findings provide new insights into host–microbe interactions in a canine model of CR and indicate the presence of potentially causal relationships between nasal pathobionts and the development of nasal inflammation and ciliary dysfunction. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a salivary gland neoplasm that infrequently appears in the sinonasal region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome and clinicopathological parameters of sinonasal AdCC. A retrospective analysis was conducted on all cases of AdCC affecting the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses between 2000 and 2018 at the University Hospital Zurich. Tumor material was examined for morphological features and analyzed for molecular alterations. A total of 14 patients were included. Mean age at presentation was 57.7 years. Sequencing revealed MYB::NFIB gene fusion in 11/12 analyzable cases. Poor prognostic factors were solid variant (p < 0.001), histopathological high-grade transformation (p < 0.001), and tumor involvement of the sphenoid sinus (p = 0.02). The median recurrence-free survival (RFS) and OS were 5.2 years and 11.3 years. The RFS rates at 1-, 5-, and 10-year were 100%, 53.8%, and 23.1%. The OS rates at 1-, 5-, and 10- years were 100%, 91.7%, and 62.9%, respectively. In Conclusion, the solid variant (solid portion > 30%), high-grade transformation, and sphenoid sinus involvement are negative prognostic factors for sinonasal AdCC. The human nasal cavity develops from birth with size anatomical changes. This study aims to evaluate the flow parameters and particle deposition parameters. Neonatal and infant nasal cavities are developed using MIMICS 21.0, and the flow is evaluated by ANSYS 2021 R2 using CFD to evaluate velocity, pressure, micro- and nanoparticle depositions under sedentary breathing conditions. Neonatal nasal valve velocity was recorded 3.5 times higher compared to the infant for 1.8 LPM and 2.7 times for 3 LPM. Neonatal vestibular depositions up to 10 µm were 6.6%, which increased to 76% for 60 µm for 1.8 LPM and increased to 21.3% for 10 µm and 79% for 60 µm for 1.8 LPM. The neonatal nasal valve showed maximum depositions of around 35% for 20 µm for both flow rates. Maximum depositions of nanoparticles are in the mid-nasal region. Infant nasal cavities deposit around 1% to 2% for nanoparticles below 20 nm for both flow rates. Neonatal overall microparticle depositions doubled with an increase in flow rate up to 10 µm. The overall deposition efficiency of nanoparticles increases 1.5 times with increasing flow rate. Epithelial–myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor that occurs mainly in the major salivary glands. Cases occurring in the nasal cavity are rarely reported. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with a postoperative pathological diagnosis of EMC. The patient recovered well after surgery. We consulted and summarized all previous cases of nasal EMC. Objectives: Saccharin test (ST) is a convenient method to assess the efficiency of mucociliary clearance, the primary defense mechanism of the upper airways' tract. The study objectives are to: (1) substantiate its short- (3 days) and long-term (30 days) repeatability; (2) assess its tolerability; (3) conduct a systematic literature review and to compare our results with the existing evidence. Methods: Twenty-nine healthy subjects were enrolled in an observational prospective study to perform an ST on three separate visits (at baseline; at follow-up visits at day 3 and at day 30). Transit times were recorded and self-reported nasal and general symptoms noted. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to compare our results with the existing literature. Results: The mean values (±SD) of ST transit time (STTT) were 7.085 (±2.19), 7.788 (±2.11), and 7.790 (±2.06) minutes at baseline, day 3, and day 30, respectively. Significant linear regression analysis was observed between day 3 and baseline (r =.193; P =.019) and day 30 and baseline (r =.182 P =.024). Significant agreement for the intrasession repeatability was observed with an ICC =.354 (P =.001). Outcomes' comparisons between baseline vs day 3 (P =.197) and baseline vs day 30 (P =.173) were not statistically significant. ST was well tolerated. Concordance with existing literature's data and high level of STTT repeatability were confirmed by the qualitative analysis. Conclusion: STTT reproducibility was good both in the short- and long-term. ST tolerability was very good. Our study data are consistent with the existing literature, indicating ST as a sound methodology for detection of early respiratory health changes and for specific regulatory application in respiratory research. Background/Objectives: Building upon the rising value of Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (CLE) in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, we present the first application of CLE during the resection of sinonasal malignant melanomas. This study aims to evaluate the potential of CLE to assist surgeons in intraoperative decision-making, with a particular focus on resection margin assessment within the constrained nasal cavity. Methods: Two cases of sinonasal malignant melanoma were included in this study. CLE was employed to examine visible tumors and their margins, both pre- and post-endoscopic resection. The findings were compared to histopathological results as well as data on squamous cell carcinoma, for which malignancy criteria had already been established in prior projects. Results: CLE provided the real-time visualization of sinonasal malignant melanomas and their margins, successfully differentiating between healthy and neoplastic tissue compared to histopathological findings. Conclusion: CLE offers the potential for real-time assessment, aiding surgeons in more precise tumor resection and potentially improving patient outcomes. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using CLE in the resection of sinonasal malignant melanoma, highlighting its ability to differentiate between healthy and neoplastic tissue intraoperatively. Objective: To compare linear distance of glenoid fossa to frontomaxillary nasal suture in skeletal Class-I and II malocclusions. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Orthodontics, Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, Karachi Pakistan. The duration of study was one year from January, 2019 to January, 2020. After taking informed consent from patient and hospital ethical committee a total of 60 patients were included in the study using WHO sample size calculator. Two groups comprising 30 patients each i.e., Skeletal Class-I malocclusion and Skeletal Class-II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion both having normal vertical relationship were included in the study. The cephalometric measurements SNA, SNB, SNMP, FHMP, GF-FMN, CO-GO, CO GN on lateral cephalograms were measured and compared between the two groups. Independent t test was applied and p value ≤ 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: In skeletal Class-I malocclusion the mean linear distance of GF-FMN was 70.2 ± 4.02 mm and in skeletal Class-II malocclusion it was 73.4 ± 4.04 mm (p value .004). Glenoid fossa was 3.2 mm distally placed in patients with Class-II malocclusion. Conclusion: Glenoid fossa position is a diagnostic feature of Class-II malocclusion associated with mandibular retrusion. One of the effective cephalometric measurements to check glenoid fossa position is the distance from the glenoid fossa(GF) to the frontomaxillary nasal suture FMN (GF-FMN). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Turbinals are bony or cartilaginous structures that are present in the nasal cavity of most tetrapods. They are involved in key functions such as olfaction, heat, and moisture conservation, as well as protection of the respiratory tract. Despite recent studies that challenged long‐standing hypotheses about their physiological and genomic correlation, turbinals remain largely unexplored, particularly for non‐mammalian species. Herein, we review and synthesise the current knowledge of turbinals using an integrative approach that includes comparative anatomy, physiology, histology and genomics. In addition, we provide synonyms and correspondences of tetrapod turbinals from about 80 publications. This work represents a first step towards drawing hypotheses of homology for the whole clade, and provides a strong basis to develop new research avenues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Olfactory dysfunction is an overlooked adverse effect of radiation therapy. This study is designed to find the effect of radiation therapy on olfactory function in head and neck malignancy excluding tumors of nose and nasopharynx and correlate the olfactory changes with the radiotherapy dose. Method: This prospective observational study was done over a 2-year period in 34 participants with head and neck malignancies who underwent radiation therapy (RT). The participants olfaction was evaluated subjectively with Italian Nose Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (I-NOSE) scale and objectively by a modified I-Smell test which included an olfactory identification score and an olfactory threshold score at 5 time points. The beginning of RT (T 0), at 2 weeks of RT(T 1), end of RT (T 2), 1 month follow-up (T 3), and 3-month follow-up (T 4). The near maximum dose to the nasal cavity (D 2%) and mean dose to the nasal cavity (D mean) were calculated for all participants and correlated with olfactory function. Results: A total of 34 patients with head neck malignancy were recruited. The median I-NOSE score reached maximum at the end of radiation and decreased to baseline at 3 months follow-up (P <.001). The olfactory identification score, olfactory threshold score, and median combined olfactory score showed a significant decrease at the end of radiation therapy compared to Pre-radiation therapy values. There was a significant but incomplete recovery in the 3-month follow-up period (P <.001). Conclusion: There was a significant deterioration in quality of life for olfaction, olfactory identification, and olfactory threshold at the completion of radiotherapy. The nasal administration of therapeutic fluids and vaccines is used to treat allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, congestion, coronaviruses and even Alzheimer's disease. In the latter, the drug must reach the olfactory region, so it finds its way into the central nervous system. Effective administration techniques able to reach the olfactory region are challenging due to the tortuous anatomy of the nasal cavity, and are frequently evaluated in vitro using transparent anatomical models. Here, the liquid distribution inside a 3D printed human nasal cavity is quantified for model fluids resulting from the discharge of a 1-mL syringe with either a spray-generating nozzle, and a straight tip emitting a collimated fluid stream. Experiments using two model fluids with different viscosities suggest that a simple, correctly positioned straight tip attached to a syringe is able to efficiently deliver most of a therapeutic fluid in the human olfactory region in the side-laying position, avoiding the adoption of head-back and head-down positions that can be difficult for patients in the age range typical of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, we demonstrate by computer simulations that the conclusion is valid within a wide range of parameters. The olfactory and trigeminal pathways are direct delivery pathways between the nose and brain. To determine the effect of direct delivery on drug distribution in the brain, two model drugs with different physical properties, antipyrine (ANP), with high membrane permeability, and ranitidine (RNT), with low membrane permeability, were selected. For ANP, direct delivery from the nose to the brain was observed only in the olfactory bulb beside the nasal cavity, with a direct transport percentage (DTP) of approximately 45 %, whereas in the frontal and occipital brains, the contribution from the systemic circulation to the brain was observed as the primary route of brain distribution. No significant variations were observed in the pharmacokinetics of ANP in the left and right brain, whereas RNT was distributed in all brain regions with a DTP of > 95 %. The closer the brain region is to the nasal cavity, the higher the DTP. Furthermore, the left brain, the same nostril site (left nostril) of administration, had a larger level of drug delivery than the right brain. Background: Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a severe infection that affects the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, often seen in individuals with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and hemato-oncological diseases. This study aims to retrospectively analyze patients diagnosed with AIFRS from 2014 to 2023. Methods: The study was a single-center, descriptive investigation focusing on demographic details, clinical presentation, radio-pathological features, and suggested management of AIFRS patients. Results: Of the 25 patients involved in the study, with a mean age of 48 years, hematooncological diseases were the most common underlying condition (44%), followed by diabetes mellitus (28%). Fungal analysis revealed Aspergillus species (32%) and Mucor (24%). The most frequently involved site was the middle turbinate (84%), while the least affected was the inferior turbinate (36%). The mortality rate was 48%, primarily due to underlying hemato-oncological diseases (32%). Aspergillus (16%) and Mucor (16%) were the most commonly encountered pathogens in fatal cases. Conclusion: Patients with diabetes mellitus, hemato-oncological diseases, or secondary immunodefciency undergoing steroid treatment should be vigilantly screened for AIFRS. Hemangiopericytoma is a rare vascular neoplasm derived from pericytes, with uncertain malignant potential. It mainly occurs in the retroperitoneum and lower extremities, with a lower incidence in the head and neck region and nasal cavity. Diagnosis is aided by histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. Surgical excision is the preferred treatment, with different approaches depending on tumour size. Endoscopic excision is suitable for small tumours, while larger ones may require external approaches. The recurrence rate is approximately 25%, emphasizing the importance of long-term follow-up. Our study aims to discuss a rare series of sinonasal hemangiopericytoma cases, their clinical presentation, and their management. In this study, we are discussing the prospective study of six cases of sinonasal hemangiopericytoma that were presented to a tertiary hospital, from June 2017 to June 2023, with complaints of nasal obstruction and bleeding episodes. They were assessed with a detailed history, blood investigations, radiological investigations, and diagnostic nasal examination, and underwent endoscopic surgical excision of the nasal mass, with the diagnosis confirmed by histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. All cases were followed up for 1 year postoperatively, except one case which missed follow-up after 6 months and with no postoperative complications and recurrences. All six cases came with complaints of nasal obstruction and bleeding from the nasal cavity. All six cases underwent endoscopic surgical excision of the tumour and were followed for 1 year in five cases; one case missed follow-up after 6 months of postoperative follow-up, but no recurrence was noted in all the cases. For small-sized hemangiopericytoma tumours, endoscopic excision offers benefits such as improved visualization, easy resection, preservation of the normal anatomical structure, and maintenance of physiological function in the sinonasal cavities. İnternal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms are rare but they can cause high morbidity and mortality. Although these aneurysms are usually asymptomatic, they can reach huge sizes and compress the surrounding neurovascular structures. Patients typically present with neurologic symptoms due to cranial nerve compression. If they rupture, they can lead to massive epistaxis and autorage. In physical examination, pulsatile mass in the middle ear or nasal cavity can be seen. If there is a clinical suspicion of an ICA aneurysms, diagnostic radiological imaging should be performed before the surgical procedure or biopsy. Cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) should be performed for definitive diagnosis. After diagnosis, appropriate endovascular or open intervention should be performed. Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa where symptomatology has continued beyond 12 weeks. Manuka honey is made by bees that pollinate the native leptospermum scoparium bush (tea tree). Baby shampoo is a commercially available liquid solution containing multiple chemical surfactants that can act as a mucolytic and an antimicrobial agent. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients diagnosed with CRS were taken to be part of study. The modes of comparison used were the Rhinosinusitis Disability Index (RSDI) and a self-formulated Nasal Crusting Score (NCS). Individuals in Group A were given 5% Manuka Honey for nasal douching in both nasal cavities and those in Group B were given 10% Baby Shampoo. Observations and Results: The average RSDI scores in Group A before & after intervention were 75.40 and 30.04, an improvement of 60.15%. The same parameters in Group B was found to be 77.36 and 37.36, an improvement of 51.70%. The NCS improved by 83.46% in the Group A and by 77.61% in Group B between POD-2 and POD-5. Conclusion: As per literature available, both Manuka Honey and Baby Shampoo have improved the outcomes of Quality of Life and airway after FESS. We found that Manuka Honey is superior in clearing crusts and achieving better symptom clearance post FESS. This case report explores a rare and aggressive Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST) in a 7-year-old child affecting nasal sinuses, maxilla, and orbit, an exceptionally uncommon pediatric manifestation unrelated to Neurofibromatosis 1. The child presented with alarming symptoms—nasal obstruction, snoring, epistaxis, and difficulty swallowing—underscoring the case's urgency. Non-contrast computed tomography revealed an extensive mass infiltrating nasopharynx, nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, and orbit, causing destructive consequences. Histopathology confirmed a high-grade MPNST, marked by rapid growth and early metastasis, highlighting management challenges. The rarity of pediatric MPNST in the nasal cavity is discussed, emphasizing the need for a broad differential diagnosis. For most of his illustrious career, Ken Stevens focused on examining and documenting the rich detail about vocal tract changes available to listeners underlying the acoustic signal of speech. Current approaches to speech inversion take advantage of this rich detail to recover information about articulatory movement. Our previous speech inversion work focused on movements of the tongue and lips, for which "ground truth" is readily available. In this study, we describe acquisition and validation of ground-truth articulatory data about velopharyngeal port constriction, using both the well-established measure of nasometry plus a novel technique—high-speed nasopharyngoscopy. Nasometry measures the acoustic output of the nasal and oral cavities to derive the measure nasalance. High-speed nasopharyngoscopy captures images of the nasopharyngeal region and can resolve velar motion during speech. By comparing simultaneously collected data from both acquisition modalities, we show that nasalance is a sufficiently sensitive measure to use as ground truth for our speech inversion system. Further, a speech inversion system trained on nasalance can recover known patterns of velopharyngeal port constriction shown by American English speakers. Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) includes non-invasive and invasive subtypes with the latter having significant morbidity and mortality. This systematic review aims to identify the imaging features most correlated with invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (IFRS) and present a checklist of these features to aid diagnosis. PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, and Science Direct were searched from inception to May 2023, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Primary research articles published in English describing the imaging features of IFRS were included. The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Forty-eight articles were identified for inclusion. Six studies examined radiological features in acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS), and 9 studies of chronic invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (CIFRS). A majority of studies did not specify whether IFRS cases were acute or chronic. On CT, bony erosion and mucosal thickening were the most common features. Other features include nasal soft tissue thickening, nasal cavity opacification, opacification of the affected sinus, and perisinus soft tissue infiltration. Extra-sinus extension was commonly observed on MRI, most often invading intraorbitally and intracranially. Other sites of extra-sinus extension included the cavernous sinus, pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, masticator space, and facial soft tissue. IFRS is a condition with potential for high morbidity and mortality. Several radiological features are highly suggestive of IFRS. Early identification of high-risk radiological features using a checklist may aid prompt diagnosis and early treatment. The stem lineage of Archosauria is populated by a diverse fossil record that remains notably understudied relative to the crown clade. Prominent among these specimens is a beautifully preserved skull of the early mid-Triassic rhynchosaur Mesosuchus browni [Iziko South African Museum (SAM) 6536], whose phylogenetic position has considerable influence on patterns of pan-archosaurian cranial evolution. We used high-resolution, micro-computed tomography to re-examine the anatomy of this specimen, building on previous studies that were either limited to external observations or restricted to the braincase. A digital segmentation of the cranial elements and primary neurovascular canals of SAM-PK-6536 allows for expanded character scoring and constitutes a foundation for future comparative insights. Our data support the phylogenetically oldest instance of a pneumatized maxilla in a pan-archosaur, bringing the record of antorbital pneumatization into closer alignment with that of the neurocranium. The nasal cavity and primary palate of Mesosuchus includes a complex septomaxilla, a novel element anterior to the vomer, and is likely to have supported a well-developed vomeronasal system. The evolution of this system is discussed in terms of both phylogenetic pattern and how the skeletal architecture of Mesosuchus and other fossils could inform the signalling dynamics that pattern the vomeronasal system during development. Objective: To review the existing literature on the application of computational fluid dynamics methods to study nasal particle deposition and to summarize and analyze the factors affecting nasal particle deposition in order to provide theoretical references for the development of future transnasal drug delivery devices and the prevention of respiratory‐related diseases. Data Source: PubMed and CNKI databases. Methods: A search of all current literature (up to and including February 2023) was conducted. Search terms related to the topic of factors influencing nasal particle deposition were identified, and queries were conducted to identify relevant articles. Results: Both the properties of the particles themselves and the environmental conditions external to the particles can affect particle deposition in the nasal cavity, with particle deposition showing a positive correlation with particle size, particle density, and airflow velocity, with increasing subject age leading to a decrease in deposition, and with the relationship between airflow temperature and humidity still requiring more research to further explore. Conclusions: With the popularity of computational fluid dynamics, more and more scholars have applied computational fluid dynamics technology to explore the influence of different parameters on particle deposition. By summarizing and analyzing the influence law of various factors on deposition, it can provide a theoretical basis for the future development and application of transnasal drug delivery devices and the prevention of respiratory‐related diseases, which makes a significant contribution to the optimization of clinical disease prevention and treatment. An intranasal tumour was diagnosed in a 5-year-old male neutered crossbreed dog following a 6–8 week history of intermittent epistaxis and nasal discharge. Computed tomography identified a mass in the right nasal cavity. Histologically, the mass was composed of sheets and indistinct clusters of predominantly clear or vacuolated round to polygonal cells; periodic acid–Schiff staining revealed glycogen granules within some tumour cells. Immunohistochemical labelling revealed that the tumour cells were immunopositive for vimentin and S100 and negative for pancytokeratin, Melan-A and PNL2, supporting a diagnosis of a clear cell variant of chondrosarcoma (CCC). Although the dog was treated with meloxicam, the owners opted for euthanasia 9 days after presentation. Considering that there is only one other reported case of a suspected CCC in a dog, also in the nasal cavity, this could represent a species-specific predilection site of this rare canine neoplasm. This study aims to highlight the importance of choosing the appropriate co-polymer or co-polymer mixed combinations in order to design value-added nasal dosage forms. Local therapy of upper respiratory tract-related infections, such as nasal rhinosinusitis is of paramount importance, thus advanced local therapeutic options are required. Dexamethasone was encapsulated into three different polymeric micelle formulations: Soluplus or TPGS-only and their mixed combinations. Dynamic light scattering measurements proved that the particles have a micelle size less than 100 nm in monodisperse distribution, with high encapsulation efficiency above 80% and an at least 7-fold water solubility increase. Tobramycin, as an antimicrobial agent, was co-formulated into the in situ gelling systems which were optimized based on gelation time and gelation temperature. The sol–gel transition takes place between 32–35 °C, which is optimally below the temperature of the nasal cavity in a quick manner below 5 min, a suitable strategic criterion against the mucociliary clearance. In vitro drug release and permeability studies confirmed a rapid kinetics in the case of the encapsulated dexamethasone accompanied with a sustained release of tobramycin, as the hydrophilic drug. Featured Application: Systematic assessment of diagnostic imaging records should be applied to eliminate the risk of overlooking clinically significant incidental findings and facilitate successful interdisciplinary treatment planning (especially in cleft lip and/or palate cases). Incidental findings (IFs) depicted in imaging tests during the diagnostic evaluation of patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) can guide clinicians during treatment planning procedures for effective, comprehensive cleft care. Evidence regarding IFs in different anatomical regions distant from the dentition is scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of IFs in various anatomical areas between patients with non-syndromic CL/P and unaffected subjects. Orthopantomographs (OPTs), lateral cephalometric (LC) radiographs, and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 120 subjects (case group: n = 40, 18 females, age 14.5 ± 5.0 years; control group: n = 80, 36 females, age 14.6 ± 4.9 years) were examined, and IFs were assessed by four observers. A significantly higher prevalence of IFs (p < 0.001) was reported in the case group (97.5%) compared with the control group (62.5%). The most prevalent location of IFs in the case group was the maxilla (92.5%), followed by the nasal cavity (75.8%) and the mandible (63.2%), while in the control group, the highest rates of IFs occurred in the maxilla (43.8%), mandible (41.3%), and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) (14.7%). No gender-dependent pattern for IF occurrence was detected overall. Orofacial clefts may affect the mandible. However, the reported IFs were limited compared to those in the maxilla. In conclusion, individuals with CL/P are more likely to present with a range of IFs than their unaffected peers. Understanding the association between CL/P and IFs is critical for successful interdisciplinary treatment, raising awareness of the potential need for future dental care for cleft patients, and managing extra-dental aberrations. Different theories have been proposed for the pathogenesis of sinonasal polyposis, However, there is no consensus of opinions on a single widely accepted theory. This case, which demonstrates nasal polyp formation within an atretic nasal cavity, suggests that the aerodynamic theory may have little effect in the pathogenesis of sinonasal polyposis. A 29-year-old female suffered a long history of nasal obstruction mainly on the left side. Nasal endoscopic evaluation showed bilateral nasal polyposis with unilateral choanal atresia. She had a history of nasal surgery for nasal polyposis, atresia repair, and septoturbinoplasty with recurrence of symptoms 2 years later. Revision functional endoscopic sinus surgery and choanal atresial repair are done with the polyps' histopathological evaluation showing allergic nasal polyps. The formation of nasal polyps within an atretic nasal cavity suggests that the airflow and inhaled allergen-based explanation of nasal polyposis may have little to do with polyp formation at least in some patients and needs further evaluation. Sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) is the most common, highaggressive sinonasal malignancies that have remained relatively stable poor outcomes over the past decade. As a first-line treatment for SNSCC, surgery plus adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended. However, complete surgical resection may not be appropriate due to the proximity of the nasal cavity and sinuses to key structures such as orbit or intracranial. Currently, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been established as one of the first-line therapies for many solid tumors with unresectable stage. However, evidence on the efficacy of ICIs in sinonasal malignancy is scarce and no ICIs are approved for use in SNSCC up to day. In this report, we report a case of a 64-year-old man with SNSCC treated by multi-protocol exploration. The patient achieved pathological complete response (pCR) after receiving two cycles of Docetaxel and cisplatin combined with tislelizumab. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of SNSCC treated with tislelizumab that achieved pCR. Introduction: Ectopic foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus occur rarely. Ectopic tooth eruption rarely occurs in the orbit, nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, and elsewhere. Ectopic eruption of teeth in the maxillary sinus is most commonly associated with wisdom teeth and is rarely associated with supernumerary teeth. This rare phenomenon may be accompanied by chronic recurrent sinusitis with headaches and facial pain. However, fibro-osseous lesions in the paranasal sinuses are discovered incidentally on X-ray images and are often asymptomatic. Osteoma is the most common fibro-osseous lesion that develops in the paranasal and nasal sinuses. Osteomas rarely cause serious symptoms such as orbital lesions and intracranial invasion. Case Presentation: We report a rare case of exostosis containing supernumerary teeth within the maxillary sinus. A characteristic pedicled bone lesion with a clear border on computed tomography was the undefined orthopantomogram radiopacity in the maxillary sinus, and the lesion contained supernumerary teeth. As the patient had chronic nasal congestion, the tumor was surgically removed. Pathologically, the surgical specimen revealed an osteoma. The patient's symptoms of chronic sinusitis disappeared. Because the patient had no history of midface trauma or surgery, the supernumerary teeth were speculated to have migrated during a reactive osteogenic process caused by chronic sinusitis. Conclusions: A foreign body in the maxillary sinus can be easily diagnosed by computed tomography. Surgical removal is recommended if the foreign body is symptomatic or occupies more than half of the maxillary sinus. Implant surgery in individuals with atrophic maxilla presents challenges, particularly concerning nasal cavity complications such as perforations, implant migration, and airway obstruction. While panoramic radiographs offer diagnostic convenience, their two-dimensional nature limits the evaluation of anatomical structures. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides a three-dimensional assessment, enhancing surgical planning accuracy and potentially reducing complications. With the aim of understanding the measurement differences between panoramic radiographs and CBCT images, this retrospective study examined CBCT images of patients with severely atrophic maxilla taken between September 2021 and December 2023 at the Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Dentistry. Virtual implants were placed in various tooth regions using OnDemand3D software. The incidence of nasal cavity perforations and vertical bone height differences between panoramic radiographs and CBCT images were evaluated. For this purpose, vertical bone length measurements in panoramic and CBCT images were compared for the virtual implant placement areas. Statistical analyses, including t-tests and ANOVA, were performed to determine significant differences among quantitative measurements, and a chi square test with Bonferroni corrected z-tests were used for possible associations between ratios. CBCT data from 59 patients, totaling 1888 virtual implants, revealed significant differences in implant depths among tooth regions (F = 9.880, p < 0.001). Canine regions showed higher perforation risks, especially with 12 mm and 14 mm implants. Panoramic radiographs often overestimated vertical bone height in canine and first premolar regions compared to CBCT measurements, which could lead to increased perforation risks. Radiographic evaluations using CBCT prior to implant surgery in atrophic maxilla cases are crucial to prevent nasal cavity complications. Panoramic radiographs may inadequately represent three-dimensional anatomy, underscoring the importance of CBCT for accurate implant placement and surgical planning. Objective: To analyze patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal sinuses turn sexual squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCAg), β serial (β-catenin) protein expression and pathological characteristics of relevance. Methods: Select our hospital from January 2017 to December 2022, 92 cases of patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal sinuses turn sex into the observation group,choose 92 cases of nasal inflammation patients as control group. Test all of the patients serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCAg), β serial protein expression level (β-catenin), analysis of different Krouse stage, tumor size, tumor pathological classification of patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal sinuses turn sexual serum SCCAg, β-catenin expression level. Use the receiver-operating characteristic curve(ROC) analysis of serum SCCAg, β-catenin in patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal sinuses turn sexual prediction effectiveness of postoperative recurrence. Results: Observation group serum SCCAg, β-catenin expression levels were higher than control group(P<0.05). Serum T3 and T4 group SCCAg, β-catenin expression levels were higher than T1, T2 group (P<0.05). Tumor size or greater 20 groups of serum SCCAg cm3, β-catenin expression levels were higher than the tumor volume<20 cubic cm group (P<0.05). Hyperplasia of active groups of serum SCCAg, hyperplasia of β-catenin expression levels were higher than the active group (P<0.05). ROC analysis showed that serum SCCAg combined with β-catenin had a sensitivity of 91.45%, specificity of 52.38% and AUC of 0.928 in predicting postoperative recurrence in patients with inverted papilloma of nasal cavity and sinuses. Conclusion: Patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal sinuses turn sexual serum SCCAg, β-catenin expression levels were significantly elevated, the two different Krouse stage, tumor size, tumor pathological classification of clear difference among patients, joint can increase the efficiency of the prediction of postoperative recurrence. The research was designed to use computed tomography (CT) with 3D-CT reconstruction imaging techniques and the various anatomical sections—plana transversalia, frontalis, and dorsalia—to describe the anatomical architecture of the Zebu cattle head. Our study used nine mature heads. The CT bone window created detailed images of cranial bones, mandibles, teeth, and hyoid bones. All of the head cavities were evaluated, including the cranial, orbital, oral, auricular, and nasal cavities with their paranasal and conchal sinuses. The septum nasi, attached to the vomer and maxillary bones, did not reach the nasal cavity floor caudally at the level of the second premolar teeth, resulting in a single median channel from the choanae to the nasopharynx. The positions, boundaries, and connections of the paranasal sinuses were clearly identified. There were four nasal conchal sinuses (that were named the dorsal, middle, ethmoidal, and ventral) and five paranasal sinuses that were described as the following: sinus frontalis, maxillaris, palatinorum, and lacrimalis, as defined in the different anatomical sections and computed tomographic images. The complicated sinus frontalis caused the pneumatization of all bones that surrounded the cranial cavity, with the exception of the ethmoidal and body of basisphenoid bones. The sinus maxillaris was connected to the sinus lacrimalis and palatinorum through the maxillolacrimal and palatomaxillary openings, and to the middle nasal meatus through the nasomaxillary opening. Our findings provide a detailed anatomical knowledge for disease diagnosis to internal medicine veterinarians and surgeons by offering a comprehensive atlas of the Zebu cattle anatomy. This case report highlights a unique presentation of Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD) with bilateral scleral lesions, choroidal infiltration, and extensive sinus involvement. It is the first case report where the diagnosis was confirmed through a scleral biopsy after an initial presentation of a unilateral nodular scleritis. There was a gradual disease progression and ocular examination later revealed bilateral subconjunctival hyperemic lesions and mild exophthalmos, ophthalmoplegia, and extensive choroidal infiltration. Infiltration of the frontal and maxillary sinus was present and extended into the nasal cavity and both orbits. The diagnostic work-up is described in detail. Current treatment options are analyzed. It is emphasized that the ophthalmologist can play a crucial role in the diagnosis of ECD, given the substantial prevalence of orbital and ocular symptoms. The overall prognosis for ECD remains unfavorable, particularly in cases with orbital involvement. This case underscores the complexity and importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing ECD. Blue nevus is a type of uncommon benign pigmented lesion in the skin or the mucosa of human body which is featured by pigmented dendritic melanocytes and spindled melanocytic cells. Sinonasal blue nevus is extremely rare. We reported a sinonasal blue nevus case with the background of pituitary adenoma, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension (including endoscopic and histological pictures). Further, the existing literature about blue nevus is reviewed. Background: In addition to its hemostatic and stabilization role, biodegradable nasal packing can be used as a carrier for drugs after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). The aim of this study was to compare the influence of biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam (NasoPore) soaked with ciprofloxacin, or betamethasone, or both to the same foam soaked with saline after FESS. Methods: 120 adults with chronic rhinosinusitis, with and without polyps, directed for bilateral full-house FESS were enrolled for the study. The patients were randomized and blinded into 3 groups, depending on the type of postoperative procedure applied. Thus, NasoPore soaked with antibiotic was provided to the first group; in the second group, the steroid was used; and the combination of both, in the third group. In each case, the aforementioned procedure was administered on one side of the nose, while NasoPore was soaked in saline on the other, at the end of the surgery, respectively. The patients were requested to complete a questionnaire during their postoperative visits at 2, 10, 30, 90, and 180 days, scoring the level of complaints on the VAS scale, separately for each side. The evaluation of the healing process was performed at each visit using rigid endoscopy and subsequently rated on numerical scales. Results: Decreased mucosal edema and secretion; reduced Lund-Kennedy score; and favorable influences on facial pressure, nasal blockage, and smell were most evidently seen in the group receiving the antibioticsteroid combination. Conclusions: The application of biodegradable nasal packing with betamethasone and ciprofloxacin in sino-nasal surgery has positive effects not only on the healing process but also impacts patient's comfort. Objective: Hemangioma is a common benign tumor in the head and neck. The therapeutic effect by conventional treatment was not very satisfactory. The purpose of this study is to explore the surgical strategy of low-temperature plasma radiofrequency in the treatment of hemangioma located in the nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Methods: The clinical data of 29 cases with hemangioma in nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx treated by low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation were retrospectively analyzed. The strategy of ablation before resection was performed for 16 cases of nasal capillary hemangioma. The other 13 cases of cavernous hemangioma in the pharynx and larynx were treated by the strategy of direct ablation. Results: All 29 patients underwent a successful operation with minimal intraoperative bleeding and no postoperative bleeding complications. There was no nasal septum perforation, dyspnea, dysphagia, dysphonia, or other complications. The patients were followed up for more than 3 years without recurrence. Conclusion: Low-temperature plasma radiofrequency is a practical, minimally invasive, and accurate method for treating hemangiomas in the nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx. For capillary hemangiomas, the strategy of ablation before resection may be an effective way to reduce bleeding, and for cavernous hemangiomas, the strategy of direct ablation is a simple and efficient method. Rosai–Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-malignant disorder, characterized by painless multiple cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, and elevated inflammatory markers. Its diagnosis is difficult due to its rare incidence and various clinical presentations, especially in extranodal involvement. In this report, we demonstrate a patient with RDD who presented with a nasal septum and laryngeal tumor that caused dyspnea. We achieved a successful treatment outcome with combined surgical resection of the laryngeal mass and corticosteroid medication. The symptoms and tumors were resolved within 3 weeks after treatment. Tuberculosis of the paranasal sinus is a rare disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of pulmonary tuberculosis. Although the worldwide incidence of tuberculosis is declining, the diagnosis of primary paranasal tuberculosis remains challenging and cannot be ruled out in patients presenting with refractory chronic rhinosinusitis after adequate surgical and medical treatment. We experienced a case of paranasal tuberculosis with no evidence of previous tuberculosis infection. It was diagnosed after a surgical biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation and caseous necrosis. The patient responded well to antituberculosis drug therapy and became free of symptoms after 7 months of treatment. We report our findings in this case with a review of the recent literature. Introduction: Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS) is a rare condition that results in neonatal respiratory difficulty. The purpose of this systematic review was to compare surgical outcomes of drilling versus dilation techniques in the treatment of CNPAS. Methods: Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Clinical Trials databases were searched for terms "congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis" or "pyriform aperture stenosis" from 2010 to 2021. Twenty-five studies were included that evaluated pediatric patients treated surgically for CNPAS with available outcomes data including complications, revisions, and length of stay. Results: A total of 51 patients with CNPAS were pooled from included studies. The median age was 29 days, 56.9% were female, and 54.9% were born full-term. The median pyriform aperture width before surgery was 5.00 mm (IQR = 4.10, 6.45). Forty (78.4%) patients underwent sublabial drilling, while 6 had a dilation procedure performed with hegar cervical dilators, 2 had a balloon dilation, and 3 were dilated with either an acrylic device, endotracheal tube, or bougie. There were no post-operative complications for 76.5% of patients, while a second surgery was required in 9 (17.6%) patients. The median length of stay was 11 days (IQR = 4, 26). No statistically significant difference was observed between sublabial drilling and surgical dilation techniques with respect to complications, need for revision surgery, or length of stay. Conclusion: Current literature is insufficient to determine if drilling or dilation is more effective in the treatment of CNPAS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluid-filled paranasal sinuses are suggested to be a valuable tool to distinguish between drowning and non-drowning postmortem, yet the mechanisms governing fluid entry remains unknown. We investigate if fluid-filled paranasal sinuses are caused by a passive influx from submersion or an active aspiration mechanism during drowning. The ovine nasal cavity and maxillary sinuses are remarkably similar anatomically to humans, and have been used for endoscopic surgical training in recent decades. We submerged 15 decapitated ovine heads from agricultural waste at a depth of 2 m in flowing water for 1, 8, and 24 h and 7 days. Paranasal sinuses were CT imaged and compared pre- and post-submersion to non-submerged controls. Furthermore, we examined the paranasal sinuses of a single homicide case of a non-drowned submerged subject. Results demonstrate that fluid passively enters the maxillary sinus postmortem in the non-drowned ovine heads following 1 h of submersion. Fluid volume was independent of submersion time and influenced by time out of water as well as handling, since volume was reduced between consecutive CT scans. In contrast to our hypothesis, the filling of the paranasal sinuses is due to passive influx of fluid from submersion rather than an active aspiration during drowning. The observation that paranasal sinuses were fluid-filled in a single medico-legal case of postmortem submersion supports the finding of passive influx. Consequently, careful interpretation of fluid-filled paranasal sinuses is required when bodies are found in water, as the finding cannot distinguish between postmortem submersion and drowning. To investigate the utility of a hand-held digital otoscope for nasal endoscopy and as a pedagogy tool for residents and fellows in patients undergoing external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery A digital otoscope (MS450-NTE, Teslong Inc., USA) comprising a digital screen device and a connectible camera probe was used for performing nasal endoscopy. Inspection of nasal cavities was performed pre-, intra-, and post-operatively in sequential patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction, who underwent DCR or lacrimal probing. Images (1920 × 1080 pixels) and videos (1280 × 720 pixels) were captured. The device was also used for training residents and fellows in performing nasal endoscopy, and to teach basic concepts. The digital otoscope could be used for routine outpatient nasal examination and for performing minor procedures. 53.8% (n = 13) of ophthalmology trainees had never observed nasal endoscopy and 84.6% could not identify more than one major structure correctly prior to the current training. Post-training, all trainees could independently perform nasal endoscopy with the device and 76.9% identified all structures correctly. A digital otoscope with a camera probe is a handy tool for nasal endoscopy and pedagogy. Low-cost gadgets such as this device can effectively be used for performing outpatient nasal endoscopy when expensive endoscopes are unavailable and in peripheral healthcare centers. Nasal congestion in allergic rhinitis (AR) is caused by vascular hyperpermeability and vascular relaxation of the nasal mucosa. We previously detected high levels of a lipoxygenation metabolite of dihomogammalinolenic acid, 15-hydroxy-8Z,11Z,13E-eicosatrienoic acid (15-HETrE) in the nasal lavage fluid of AR model mice. Here, we investigated the effects of 15-HETrE on vascular functions associated with nasal congestion. We measured 15-HETrE levels in the nasal lavage fluid of ovalbumin-induced AR model mice and nasal discharge of patients with AR. We also assessed nasal congestion and vascular relaxation in mice. Vascular contractility was investigated using isolated mouse aortas. Five ovalbumin challenges increased 15-HETrE levels in AR model mice. 15-HETrE was also detected in patients who exhibiting AR-related symptoms. Intranasal administration of 15-HETrE elicited dyspnea-related behavior and decreased the nasal cavity volume in mice. Miles assay and whole-mount immunostaining revealed that 15-HETrE administration caused vascular hyperpermeability and relaxation of the nasal mucosa. Intravital imaging demonstrated that 15-HETrE relaxed the ear vessels that were precontracted via thromboxane receptor stimulation. Moreover, 15-HETrE dilated the isolated mouse aortas, and this effect was attenuated by K+ channel inhibitors and prostaglandin D 2 (DP) and prostacyclin (IP) receptor antagonists. Additionally, vasodilatory effects of 15-HETrE were accompanied by an increase in intracellular cAMP levels. Our results indicate that 15-HETrE, whose levels are elevated in the nasal cavity upon AR, can be a novel lipid mediator that exacerbates nasal congestion.
