This research aimed to design a reflection book as a set of problem-based learning (PBL) for a supplementary material in Microteaching class. The book was developed not only to assist pre-service English teachers (PSETs) undergoing Microteaching class to understand real problems in school context, but also to help them enhance their problem-solving skill through critical reflection and discussion. This book was designed by implementing ADDIE model, consisting of five phases, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This product was formatively evaluated within the Analysis, Design, Development and Implementation phases and was field tested in Microteaching class comprising of 19 PSETs from the English Language Education Study Program in Tuladha University (pseudonym). In the last stage, summative evaluation was conducted by two subject matter experts whose background was both English education lecturers and book authors. Product validation included narrative story aspect and reflective activities. The validation result showed that the book was appropriate and practical for enhancing PSETs’ problem-solving skill.

With the reforms of the so-called ‘Jobs Act’ (JA), Italy aimed to structurally reform its labour market and income-support system, through recalibration (i.e. a mix of both expansionary and retrenching measures) for old social policy risks, and some expansionary measures to face new social risks. The JA also became the symbol of opposite views about the Italian welfare state, being itself a reason for ideological conflict and coalition reshuffling in the Italian left. Ultimately, its increasing personalization around Renzi’s divisive figure detracted from its functional and substantive matter. Hence, the JA reform provides an unparalleled vantage point to investigate the role of narrative stories in shaping policy contents and reforms. The paper aims to contribute to the literature on social policy reforms by combining a focus on narrative stories with the analytical perspective of the Multiple Stream Framework. Through qualitative analysis of official documents, of more than 500 newspaper articles and of selected in-depth interviews to key informants, this paper reconstructs the narratives about the JA reform, considering both the supporters and the challengers. Building on the Multiple Stream Framework, the paper focuses in particular on whether and how policy entrepreneurs took advantage of windows of opportunity by shaping the narrative stories. Results are twofold. First, the paper shows the variations of social policy reform narratives across actors. Second, it demonstrates the crucial role of policy entrepreneurs in shaping narrative stories as a strategy to couple the streams of problem, policy and politics.

Narrative stories are crucial to policy change, as they decisively contribute to how policy problems and policies are defined. While this seems to apply for social policy in particular, narrative stories have remained under-researched and not systematically compared for this area. In this article, we theorise on narratives in social policy by focusing on how similarities and differences between narratives in old- and new-social-risks policy reforms can be conceptualised, taking into account expansion and retrenchment. To systematically link those types of social policy reform with narrative elements, we rely on stories of control and helplessness, as well as the deservingness or undeservingness associated with different target populations. Thereby, distinct types of social policy reform narratives are identified: stories of giving-to-give, giving-to-shape, taking-to-take, taking-to-control, and taking-out-of-helplessness. The article concludes with empirical illustrations of those narrative types, which stem from the case studies presented in this Special Issue.

Despite different institutional and situational conditions, the recent French labor market reforms bear a strong resemblance to the labor market reforms in Germany in the early 2000s. Governments at both points in time turned away from the conservative welfare state model and failed to appropriately legitimize their reforms toward the public as well as their originally partly social-democratic electorate. Given the diverging conditions which are expected to lead to different strategies of legitimization, this contribution inquires after the narrative stories with which the corresponding acting government framed its reforms publicly. Surprisingly, despite the large differences that the two governments faced, the analysis shows that the respective narratives stories were not only similar but can be assigned to certain programmatic groups that used the narratives to push their own policy program and place themselves in power positions. In doing so, the contribution establishes a yet missing link between the recently established Programmatic Action Framework (PAF) and the concept of narrative stories and discourse in policy analysis, thereby adding to both research strands. This link lies in the observation that programmatic groups use narratives to strengthen in-group identification and thus improve their chances of success, which makes dominant narratives an important indicator of programmatic groups. However, when legitimizing reforms – even if these are transferred from other country experiences – it is imperatively important to embed the strategies of legitimization in the national context.

Deborah Stone’s Policy Paradox stresses the role of narrative stories in the construction of policy problems. This article takes a critical look at the Policy Paradox and at the claim that paying close attention to narratives is essential to the analysis of policy change. Drawing on recent scholarship on the role of ideas in public policy, the article shows that the analysis of narratives is part of a broader intellectual project associated with the ideational turn in policy analysis. The article explains how the analysis of narrative stories should take institutional factors into account, which can shape policy decisions. To illustrate these theoretical claims, the article analyzes the debate over public pension reform in the United States and Canada during the last 25 years. More specifically, the article compares the reform of the Canada Pension Plan during the mid-1990s and the failed push to privatize US Social Security during the Bill Clinton and the George W. Bush presidencies. The analysis stresses that, while narrative stories shape problem definition, institutional legacies influence policy adoption.

Since the 1970s, Finland has conducted family policies that could be labelled social investments, for example, investments in work–family balance or public childcare, while at the same time it has protected the economic standard of families with children through various income transfers. However, after the 2008–2009 financial crisis these policies including those with socially investing objectives have been increasingly subjected to cuts in benefit levels and entitlements in order to lower public expenditure, which raises the question if there has been a shift away from social investments and redistribution towards austerity policies. By analysing government programs from the period 2007–2015, this article discusses if, and to what extent, such a change can be traced in the Finnish government discourse. More specifically the article studies the narrative stories used to legitimise changes (reforms) in existing family policy and to what extent these changes were informed by a social investment perspective focusing on ‘new’ social risks, a traditional redistribution perspective emphasising ‘old’ social risks, or a neoliberal austerity perspective advocating fiscal austerity and welfare cuts. We argue that the first two perspectives were dominant prior to and during the first phase of the international financial crisis, whereas the third perspective became dominant after the crisis. Moreover, the results show that the main storyline in the legitimisation of the reforms was stories of ‘progress’ in combination with stories of ‘control’ and helplessness’.

Obstetric violence is a human rights violation that consists of actions or omissions of healthcare personnel that harms people during pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium. Some practices through which it is expressed are the mistreatment, unnecessary procedures, denying of medical attention or provoking damage either physically or mentally. In particular, we understand obstetric violence as the result of a colonization of the womb, that is, of the occupation of the concept of motherhood by the dictates of patriarchal ideology (Fineman, 1991; Ehrenreich, 1993) and of the Colonial/Modern Gender System, proposed by Lugones (2007). The objective of this paper is to analyze the experiences of obstetric violence and the different agency forms of women who have experienced it in hospitals in Tijuana, Mexico. To achieve this, we follow Galtung (1969, 1990, 1998) who states that direct violence is just the tip of the iceberg of cultural and structural forms of violence that are more difficult to see. Based on Bourdieu (2001) and De Certeau (1998), agency is classified in four categories: 1) unawareness, 2) passive awareness, 3) tactics and 4) strategies. The intersectional analysis of the narrative stories of 20 women leads us to conclude that both those who have privileged positions and those who experience different oppressions based on their identity characteristics perform their agency in various ways. Including modern and non-modern knowledges, relations, values and practices, Decolonial Feminism (Lugones, 2010) contributes to an understanding of the decolonization of the womb at the collective level while simultaneously influencing individual learning and promoting social justice and the formation of a culture of rights. The Charbonneau Inquiry in Quebec, Canada, uncovered a complex nexus of collusion and corruption in the awarding of public works construction contracts. The aim of this article is to better illustrate and understand how corruption was perceived and collectively understood in the public works sector prior to the revelations of the Charbonneau Inquiry. This article argues that a 'folklore' of corruption was prevalent through which civil servants perceived the criminal phenomenon. This is achieved through a narrative analysis of two witness testimonies of civil engineers, who recounted their implication in the corrupt and collusive nexus in the city of Montreal during the commission's hearings. This article makes a case for the importance of narratives in the study of corruption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are few studies that investigate rural music educators' lived experiences in relation to 'place', particularly from an Ontario, Canada context. Yet in small rural schools, the music program is often seen as the catalyst for interaction and bonding with community as music educators strive to build and foster student involvement and a sense of pride in relation to 'place.' In this study, four participants described the contexts of their elementary rural music education experiences using a literary and music metaphor to better express their attachment to place and the relationships they have developed with their students, school, and local community through music. Through their stories of lived experiences inspired by their metaphors, participants discussed the issues related to the multifacetedness of their teacher roles, the lack of a place-based curricular focus, the need for a rural voice, and the important role that music plays in their rural communities. It involved 33 participants who had different English levels proficiency: 15 elementary, 10 pre-intermediate and 8 intermediate level. Taking into account the participants’ English proficiency, they had to read and summarize seven stories implemented during a period of 25 pedagogical hours. The quantitative instruments were pre-post survey, pre-post-test and pre-post checklist while qualitative instruments were “Time to reflect” template and an interview. Regarding the pre-post reading test, participants took two different passages (i and i+1). The results evidenced a p-value of 0.021 on pre-post-test i and 0.000 on pre-post-test i+1. Fractioned results displayed that elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate level scored a p-value of 0.014, 0.024 and 0,388 on pre-post reading test i and a p-value of 0.000, 0.034 and 0.776 on pre-test i+1 respectively. Furthermore, outcomes demonstrated participants perceived summarization significantly helped them to increase their reading comprehension. It is concluded that summarization strategy seems to be plausible to improve English reading comprehension, especially applied with elementary levels and with the consideration of the i+1 principles Guayaquil Magister en Pedagogía de los Idiomas Nacionales y Extranjeros con Mención en la Enseñanza de Inglés

- Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is a challenging disease to diagnose and treat, and oftentimes even with the best medical intervention, it spreads and is deemed incurable, requiring a shift from cure to end-of-life care. This study used a spirituality measure and the PATS© storytelling intervention developed by the principal investigator to better understand the experience of being diagnosed with cancer and being told no further curative treatments are warranted. Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory study was to implement a storytelling approach to explore the experience of living with terminal cancer. Second, the study documented the presence of spirituality and healing in the narratives. Method: The qualitative data were analyzed by narrative analysis developed by Riessman. Findings: Seven synoptic stories were written and later sorted into healing categories. The narrative analysis yielded three themes. There were instances of religion and spirituality found in the transcribed stories. The participants’ scores on the Spiritual Health Inventory indicated the presence of spirituality. Conclusion: Storytelling allowed the seven study participants to share personal experiences and achieve a sense of connectedness and intimacy. The use of the PATS© intervention is a way to facilitate physical, emotional, and spiritual healing and provide holistic end-of-life care. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper argues that mythical discourse affects political practice by imbuing language with power, shaping what people consider to be legitimate, and driving the determination to act. Drawing on Bottici's (2007 ) philosophical understanding of political myth as a process of work on a common narrative that answers the human need to ground events in significance, it contributes to the study of legitimization in political discourse by examining the role of political myth in official-level U.S. war rhetoric. It explores how two ubiquitous yet largely invisible political myths, American Exceptionalism and Civilization vs. Barbarism, which have long defined America's ideal image of itself and its place in the world, have become staples in the language of the “War on Terror.” Through a qualitative analysis of the content of over 50 official texts containing lexical triggers of the two myths, this paper shows that senior officials of the Bush Administration have rhetorically accessed these mythical representations of the world in ways that legitimize and normalize the practices of the “War on Terror.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine the factors leading to successful recovery and productive lifestyles after acquired brain injury (ABI). Method: Qualitative investigation examined semistructured interviews of 31 survivors of ABI. Thematic analysis followed a phenomenological approach and revealed 4 major themes and 28 subthemes in the interviews. Four participants stood out as exemplars of the themes embodied by all the participants in this investigation. Quotes from each are used to highlight the prevailing themes. Results: The following 4 major themes emerged from the interviews: development of social support networks, grief and coping strategies, acceptance of the injury and redefinition of self, and empowerment. Conclusions: The issues raised in these interviews may serve to inspire other survivors and provide them with hope and motivation as they progress through the recovery process. Suggestions on how clinicians can help to facilitate this process are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thesis tracks the possibilities of working with education problems through using a book in kindergarten. The theoretical part sums up knowledge about the socialization of a child, social development of a preschool age child, about moral development, about social rules and social education of children in kindergartens. Further, it sums up knowledge about children's literature, especially about genres which present rules and norms of behavior. Furthermore, it sums up knowledge about suitable methods which can be used to work with educational stories. These are RWCT methods, reading strategies, methods of emotional education and methods of dramatic education. The practical part of the thesis is based on the mixed research. The objective of the quantitative part was to find out from teachers the most common education problems at children in kindergartens, using which methods can be worked with children's literature in mediation of these problems to children and specific proven titles of the children's literature. The objective of qualitative part of the thesis was to create a possibility to work with education problems on the basis of work with a book using methodical material aimed at children from 5 to 6-7 years. Classes were designed on the basis of RWCT methods, reading strategies, emotional...

ABSTRACT Introduction and background Disease related to dementia is increasing in Sweden and this implies disabilities of varying degree and at differing levels during the process of the disease. Changes in life situations result from dementia related disease, not only for the sufferer but also for their close relations and friends. Symptomatology can vary amongst individuals who have been given the same diagnosis: cognitive, somatic, behavioural and psychological disabilities are included. These disabilities may threaten the individual’s identity. In order to provide patient-centred care for these individuals, care providers require both in-depth knowledge about dementia and also about the individual who has been afflicted. A tool which may be useful in the daily care of individuals with dementia and also in specific care situations is the use of ”life story”. Problem area The number of older persons is increasing in our society and with it, the risk of being affected by dementia. Since there is, as yet, no cure for dementia, care is of central importance.. Important cognitive functions can be lost as a result of dementia and thus, care and the deliverance of care must be carefully planned. Care providers’ interpretation and understanding of each individual is important, as is adaptation of care to individual needs. Knowledge of the individual’s life, habits and important life events is implemental in the use of life story for the provision of person-centred care. The present study may allow more understanding of the use of life story as a tool for improved person-centred care for this vulnerable group. Aim The aim of the present study is to describe the experience of using life story as a tool in person-centred care of individuals with dementia. Method Data was collected in eight in-depth interviews with nurses and nurses' assistants at a home for persons suffering from dementia. The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results Five categories and ten sub-categories emerged from the analysis of the interviews. The categories are as follows: person-centred care, getting to know, life story as a tool, life story as documentation and relatives’ different perceptions of the content of life stories. The sub-categories were as follows: the person behind the disease, attendant staff, everyday and specific care situations, increased understanding, flaws in life stories, to not be shown up, personal and alive, documentation, participation and influence. Conclusion Most of the informants in this study felt that life stories were a tool which provided a grounding to use in person-centred care of individuals with dementia. In order to use the tool to a greater extent, details should be documented and followed up continually. Care providers are given knowledge about these details through daily participation in care of the dement individual and through relationships with relatives. Interpretation and understanding of the needs of the individual contributes to deliverence of care adjusted to individual needs. It is of importance that relatives participate in the formation of the life story and also to document when it was drawn up. Close relatives to individuals suffering from dementia may also effect the content of the life story through differing perceptions about what should be documented. Clinical implications There is a need to revise documentation of life stories. It is important that the use of life story and its importance in deliverence of person-centred care is established with both relatives and care providers. Awareness of the usefulness of life story is important here. Establishment of a place for continual documentation of life stories is important in daily care of individuals with dementia.

This interpretative grounded theory study describes and analyses the actual lived experiences of project members who worked in a three year long inter-organisational information system (IOIS) project. The IOIS project was a Nordic project which spanned four user organisations (Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta), two suppliers (Eta and Zeta), two national organisations (Lambda and Kappa), a research organisation (Epsilon) and a Ministry who funded the project. The project was carried out between 2004 and 2006. The data was elicited by means of in-depth interviews (narrative stories), observations of project meetings, diaries, project memoranda and emails sent by project members to each other during these years. Other secondary data (the data from previous projects) was also analysed. Feelings and emotions as a research object are acknowledged to be a very demanding research area. The terms ‘feelings’ and ‘emotions’ are partly used interchangeably in this study, though these concepts are also partly distinguished in this study: feeling is what is felt, and emotion is what is shown; feeling is classified as a subjective experience whereas emotion involves emotional performance where social conventions have a significant role. The Glaserian grounded theory method was used as the technique for theory building. Three core categories were identified: Governance, Power and Emotions. There were also relationships between categories: Governance contributed to issues related to Power which in turn impacted on Emotions and vice versa. The categories not only defined the nature of the core theme but also formed a connection between themselves. The emergent category Emotions demonstrates that emotions influence structure and that emotions are intimately linked to social structures of power, and shows that ‘inequality’ is an essential part of that theme. This study shows that emotions have a remarkable role in the work of an IOIS, and that they have an affect on decisions. The study also finds that feelings and emotions are the basis of action (Power), and that emotions easily trump the intellect. At a higher level of abstraction, the scaling up process produced one core theme: Emotions of Control, and this study builds a substantive theory of Emotions of Control. Tiivistelmä Tämä tulkitseva grounded teoria tutkimus kuvaa ja analysoi kolmivuotisen, organisaatioiden välisen tietojärjestelmäprojektin jäsenten kokemuksia tietojärjestelmäprojektista. Organisaatioiden välinen tietojärjestelmäprojekti oli Pohjoismainen hanke, joka koostui neljästä käyttäjäorganisaatiosta (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta), kahdesta toimittajasta (Eta, Zeta), kahdesta kansallisesta organisaatiosta (Lambda, Kappa), tutkimusorganisaatiosta (Epsilon) ja ministeriöstä, joka rahoitti projektin. Projekti toteutui vuosina 2004–2006. Sosiaalisilla sopimuksilla on merkittävä rooli tunteiden näyttämisessä.
