Abstract: In this paper, a new algorithm for the computation of workspace boundaries of continuum parallel robots (CPRs) is proposed. State-of-the-art techniques are mainly based on time-consuming joint-space discretization approaches or task-space discretization algorithms, and only a few approaches are dedicated to the computation of workspace boundaries. The proposed approach for the computation of the workspace boundaries is based on i) a free-space exploration strategy and ii) a boundary reconstruction algorithm. The former is exploited to identify an initial workspace boundary location (exterior, interior boundaries, and holes), while the latter is used to reconstruct the complete boundary surface. Moreover, the algorithm is designed to be employed with CPRs modelling strategies based on general discretization assumptions, in order to increase its applicability for various scopes. Our method is compared with two state-of-the-art algorithms in four case studies to validate the results and to establish its merits and limitations.

Abstract: International audience; The historiography concerning Medieval Christian Muslim-Relations over the past sixty years has been shaped by two important books: Norman Daniel’s Islam and the West (1960) and Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978). Each of these works made significant contributions to the field, but each also had serious methodological limitations. Both works assumed and reinforced a conceptual divide between an imagined Christian West and Muslim East. Over the past several decades, some of the most interesting and important work in the field has challenged and reconceptualized this dichotomy.; La historiografía sobre las relaciones medievales entre cristianos y musulmanes durante los últimos sesenta años ha sido moldeada por dos libros importantes: Islam and the West (1960) de Norman Daniel, y Orientalism (1978) de Edward Said. Cada uno de estos trabajos hizo contribuciones significativas al campo, pero cada uno también tuvo serias limitaciones metodológicas. Ambas obras asumieron y reforzaron una división conceptual entre un Occidente cristiano imaginado y un Oriente musulmán. En las últimas décadas, algunos de los trabajos más interesantes e importantes en el campo han cuestionado y reconceptualizado esta dicotomía.

Abstract: Due to their periodic nature, metasurfaces used to perform anomalous reflection raise parasitic harmonic reflections. We show a classical synthesis example of such a structure and highlight its limitations. Floquet analysis and its associated simulation environment are exploited to understand the origin of these parasitic reflections and to mitigate them. The proposed method is based on the optimization of the metasurface periodic pattern: the supercell. A predictive method is built to calculate radar cross-section patterns from supercell Floquet simulation, avoiding dealing with heavy simulations. The proposed model, the optimization outputs, and the general results are exposed in details. Different cases are also discussed to prove the repeatability of the proposed method. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the European Microwave Conference and was published in its proceedings.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a circuit model to calculate the current along printed coils used in Resonant Wireless Power Transfer. It considers a system composed of a metamaterial and two coplanar coils, transmitter and receiver, respectively. First, a circuit model for the system is presented. Then, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the self-inductance of printed inductors, their characteristic resistance, and the mutual inductance between coils. The proposed formulation for calculating the mutual inductance between inductors is based on Neumann’s formula. The practical results validate the model precision, obtaining a maximum deviation of approximately 8%, 3%, and 3%, respectively. Due to the generality of this approach, it can also be applied to more complex structures such as metasurfaces. The proposed 3-D models proved to be ideal for modeling the printed inductor. Furthermore, this model proved to be computationally more efficient for analyzing large systems when compared to commercial full-wave simulation software, with a reduction in the computational time larger than three orders of magnitude.

Abstract: International audience; Weathering phenomena are ubiquitous in urban environments, where it is easy to observe severely degraded old buildings as a result of water penetration. Despite being an important part of any realistic city, this kind of phenomenon has received little attention from the Computer Graphics community compared to stains resulting from biological or flow effects on the building exteriors. In this paper, we present physically-inspired deep weathering effects, where the penetration of humidity (i.e., water particles) and its interaction with a building's internal structural elements result in large, visible degradation effects. Our implementation is based on a particle-based propagation model for humidity propagation, coupled with a spring-based interaction simulation that allows chemical interactions, like the formation of rust, to deform and destroy a building's inner structure. To illustrate our methodology, we show a collection of deep degradation effects applied to urban models involving the creation of rust or of ice within walls.

Abstract: International audience; The structural and radio frequency (RF) design and optimization of a large deployable faceted reflectarray (RA) generating double polarization contour beam are presented in this work. The issue addressed is the thermoelastic stability of large RAs and the impact of the thermoelastic deformation (TED) under transverse thermal gradient on the RA performances. Finite element TED analysis is conducted on a deployable RA with self-standing structures, demonstrating the detrimental effects of the in-orbit TED impact on the RA performances, estimated to be above 3 dB losses. To this extent, a novel structural solution is proposed, based on the use of reliable mechanical support capable to mitigate the TED. The mechanical design reorientation is contingent on the RF design reformulation. The proposed novel mechanical and RF co-design concept and methodology allows the conception of a low-profile, thermo-structurally stable RA with compliant radiation patterns and high cross-polarization discrimination in the worst case thermal load. This methodology is based on a direct optimization of nine-panel faceted RA composed of advanced high-order Phoenix cells directly optimized to fulfill the contoured beam requirements and by respecting the local periodicity requirements of the layout.

Abstract: DNA viruses have a major influence on the ecology and evolution of cellular organisms, but their overall diversity and evolutionary trajectories remain elusive. Here we carried out a phylogeny-guided genome-resolved metagenomic survey of the sunlit oceans and discovered plankton-infecting relatives of herpesviruses that form a putative new phylum dubbed Mirusviricota. The virion morphogenesis module of this large monophyletic clade is typical of viruses from the realm Duplodnaviria, with multiple components strongly indicating a common ancestry with animal-infecting Herpesvirales. Yet, a substantial fraction of mirusvirus genes, including hallmark transcription machinery genes missing in herpesviruses, are closely related homologues of giant eukaryotic DNA viruses from another viral realm, Varidnaviria. These remarkable chimaeric attributes connecting Mirusviricota to herpesviruses and giant eukaryotic viruses are supported by more than 100 environmental mirusvirus genomes, including a near-complete contiguous genome of 432 kilobases. Moreover, mirusviruses are among the most abundant and active eukaryotic viruses characterized in the sunlit oceans, encoding a diverse array of functions used during the infection of microbial eukaryotes from pole to pole. Abstract: International audience; Oxides derived from the ReO3 structure, such as bronzes or Wadsley-Roth phases, have re-emerged from the past as they offer very attractive properties as negative electrodes for high-power Li-ion batteries. Here, we revisit the hexagonal bronze Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14 and its protonated H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 derivative, which was newly obtained after ion exchange. A panel of characterization techniques (HAADF-STEM imaging, EDX mapping, and XRD) revealed a specific cation ordering in the material and a preferential ion exchange in the heptagonal tunnels of this oxide. When used as Li-ion battery electrodes, H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 exhibits higher specific capacities as well as better capacity retention at high currents than Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14. The protonated phase provides specific capacities of 132 and 111 mAh center dot g-1 at, respectively, 0.02 and 0.2 A center dot g-1. Kinetic analysis reveals that the good capacity at a high rate is due to favorable diffusion of lithium ions into the tunnels of H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14. In addition, using in situ XRD, a solid solution mechanism occurring during lithium insertion was proposed, as well as the different lithiation sites of the material.

Abstract: International audience; Transfer impedance is a main characteristic to describe the shielding performance of shielded cables at least up to 1 GHz. Traditionally, methods like line-injection and triaxial cell have been used to characterize it at ambient laboratory conditions. While the ambient laboratory conditions might represent appropriate environmental conditions for some industries, in others, like automotive, they are only a small subset of the real conditions. Thus, there is a need to characterize the transfer impedance over different environmental conditions. In this article, the authors present and verify a new triaxial cell design that is aimed to provide reliable measurements during high thermal and mechanical stresses. First, the cell performance is compared to a commercial cell at laboratory ambient conditions. Then, measurements are performed with the new cell at highly accelerated life testing conditions. Under these high thermal and mechanical stress conditions the cell performance is verified, and results on typical shielded cable performance under the same conditions are given.

Abstract: International audience; The current rise of Open Science and Reproducibility in the Life Sciences requires the creation of rich, machine-actionable metadata in order to better share and reuse biological digital resources such as datasets, bioinformatics tools, training materials, etc. For this purpose, FAIR principles have been defined for both data and metadata and adopted by large communities, leading to the definition of specific metrics. However, automatic FAIRness assessment is still difficult because computational evaluations frequently require technical expertise and can be time-consuming. As a first step to address these issues, we propose FAIR-Checker , a web-based tool to assess the FAIRness of metadata presented by digital resources. FAIR-Checker offers two main facets: a “Check” module providing a thorough metadata evaluation and recommendations, and an “Inspect” module which assists users in improving metadata quality and therefore the FAIRness of their resource. FAIR-Checker leverages Semantic Web standards and technologies such as SPARQL queries and SHACL constraints to automatically assess FAIR metrics. Users are notified of missing, necessary, or recommended metadata for various resource categories. We evaluate FAIR-Checker in the context of improving the FAIRification of individual resources, through better metadata, as well as analyzing the FAIRness of more than 25 thousand bioinformatics software descriptions.

Abstract: International audience; The paper proposes a new real-time motion planning technique for an autonomous mobile robot that is able to find a collision-free path and a corresponding time-optimal trajectory while taking into account limits on the actuator capacities and constraints from the wheel-ground adhesion. The proposed technique includes two sub-modules. The first one, an optimal path planner, is based on the discretization of the robot workspace and dynamic programming principle. It allows finding the shortest path in the robot environment to avoid obstacles and reach the robot target. The second one, an optimal trajectory generator, operates with the discretized robot state-space and also employs dynamic programming techniques. It produces a time-optimal motion along the obtained path, which may include numerous regular and singular trajectory sections caused by the simultaneous application of actuator and wheel-ground adhesion constraints. To adapt this technique to real-time implementation, a moving window strategy is presented that allows regularly updating the robot motion profile in a dynamic environment. The advantages of the developed technique and its suitability for real-time control are illustrated by experimental studies implemented on a car-like mobile robot.

Abstract: International audience; Kidney transplant survival is shortened by chronic rejection and side effects of standard immunosuppressive drugs. Cell-based immunotherapy with tolerogenic dendritic cells has long been recognized as a promising approach to reduce general immunosuppression. Published trials report the safety and the absence of therapy-related adverse reactions in patients treated with tolerogenic dendritic cells suffering from several inflammatory diseases. Here, we present the first phase I clinical trial results using human autologous tolerogenic dendritic cells (ATDC) in kidney transplantation. Eight patients received ATDC the day before transplantation in conjunction with standard steroids, mycophenolate mofetil and tacrolimus immunosuppression with an option to taper mycophenolate mofetil. ATDC preparations were manufactured in a Good Manufacturing Practice-compliant facility and fulfilled cell count, viability, purity and identity criteria for release. A control group of nine patients received the same standard immunosuppression, except basiliximab induction replaced ATDC therapy and mycophenolate tapering was not allowed. During the three-year follow-up, no deaths occurred and there was 100% graft survival. No significant increase of adverse events was associated with ATDC infusion. Episodes of rejection were observed in two patients from the ATDC group and one patient from the control group. However, all rejections were successfully treated by glucocorticoids. Mycophenolate was successfully reduced/stopped in five patients from the ATDC group, allowing tacrolimus monotherapy for two of them. Regarding immune monitoring, reduced CD8 T cell activation markers and increased Foxp3 expression were observed in the ATDC group. Thus, our results demonstrate ATDC administration safety in kidney-transplant recipients.

The proposed reflectarray is based on a unit cell whose tuning elements allow the independent control of the reflection phase value for the vertical and horizontal impinging polarizations. Due to the symmetry of the unit cell, the same performance is produced by each polarization when its reflection phase response is modified. The proposed unit cell provides a fairly linear phase response along the frequency with a phase variation in the orthogonal polarization of ±1o. The performance under oblique incidence and the frequency limitation of the unit cell are also investigated. From this unit cell, a metal-only reflectarray that produces circular polarization from a linear polarization is designed. The reflectarray presents a simulated directivity greater than 27 dBi with an axial ratio below 1.5 dB from 32 GHz to 50 GHz (43.9% of bandwidth). A prototype is fabricated and the measured results agree well with the simulated ones. The obtained aperture efficiency is between 56% and 41% in the considered frequency band. Abstract: International audience; Isothiazolinones are a family of broad-spectrum biocides widely used in industry and consumer products. Chloro- and methyl-isothiazolinones (CMIT and MIT) are documented as strong irritants, yet they are still used in a wide variety of applications, including cosmetics, cleansers, hygiene products and various industrial applications. The subsequent substantial release of these molecules from urban sources into freshwater environments, and their potential impacts on aquatic species, have nevertheless received little attention so far, with few studies reporting on the toxicity of either CMIT or MIT to non-target organisms. The present work addresses this current knowledge gap by evaluating CMIT/MIT (3:1) and MIT acute toxicity to Daphnia pulex (Cladocera), the two formulations most commonly used by manufacturers. Additionally, genetic diversity is known to be a major component of variability in phenotypic responses, although it is largely overlooked in typical toxicity tests. Subsequently the potential range of responses inherent to genetic diversity is rarely considered. Therefore, to account for intraspecific variation in sensitivity, the design involved eight clonal lines of D. pulex stemming from distinct natural populations or commercial strains. Clones exhibited strong variation in their responses, with lethal concentrations (LC50) ranging from 0.10 to 1.84 mg/L for the mixture CMIT/MIT, and from 0.68 to 2.84 mg/L for MIT alone. These intraspecific ranges of LC50 challenge the use of single clones of daphnids in standard ecotoxicological tests and the predictions based on their results. The present study brings new evidence that assessing ecological risk of chemicals while ignoring genotype diversity is neither ecologically relevant, nor a representative evaluation of the diversity of potential adverse outcomes.

Abstract: International audience; Fast, low-cost and efficient energy storage technologies are urgently needed to balance the intermittence of sustainable energy sources. High-power capacitors using organic polymers offer a green and scalable answer. They require dielectrics with high permittivity ($\epsilon _r$) and breakdown strength ($E_B$), which bio-based poly(hydroxy urethane)s (PHUs) can provide. PHUs combine high concentrations of hydroxyl and carbamate groups, thus enhancing their $\epsilon _r$, and a highly tuneable glass transition ($T_g$), which dictates the regions of low dielectric losses. By reacting erythritol dicarbonate with bio-based diamines, fully bio-based PHUs were synthesised with $T_g$ ~ 50 °C, $\epsilon _r$ > 8, $E_B$ > 400 MV•m$^{-1}$ and low losses (tan δ < 0.03). This results in energy storage performance comparable with the flagship petrochemical materials (discharge energy density, $U_e$ > 6 J•cm$^{-3}$) combined with a remarkably high discharge efficiency, with η = 85% at $E_B$ and up to 91% at 0.5 $E_B$. These bio-based PHUs thus represent a highly promising route to green and sustainable energy-storage.

Abstract: International audience; In coherent direction of arrival (DOA) estimation,subspace-based methods suffer from performance deteriorationbecause of the rank loss of the signal covariance matrix. Avariety of spatial smoothing preprocessing techniques have beenproposed for decorrelation, among which the enhanced spatialsmoothing preprocessing (ESS) technique shows outstandingperformance by exploiting the signal subspace. However, ESSis applied by squaring the matrix whose columns span thesignal subspace (called signal matrix), which involves unnecessarycomputational loads. Besides, the smoothed covariance matrixafter ESS is a linear combination of the sub-matrices of signalmatrix, where the coefficients of the combination may underminethe decorrelation performance. In this context, a simplifiedspatial smoothing (SSS) technique is proposed for decorrelationby averaging the sub-matrices of the signal matrix directly,and avoids redundant operations in squared signal matrix. Theproposed method is tested numerically in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of snapshots, angle separation,and the execution time. Simulation results show the improvementof the decorrelation performance, efficiency, and robustness withthe proposed method in coherent scenarios, compared with theother spatial smoothing preprocessing based methods.

Abstract: We discuss the need for a confluence of localization, sensing and communications if RISs are to be deployed in a self-adaptive manner in the dynamically evolving rich-scattering settings that are typical for 6G deployment scenarios such as factories. We establish that in such problems the rich-scattering wireless channels are subject to a highly nonlinear deterministic double-parametrization through both the RIS and uncontrolled moving objects. Therefore, acquiring full context-awareness through localization and sensing is a prerequisite for RIS-empowered communications. Yet, the byproducts of this daunting communications overhead can feed many appliances that require context awareness, such that overhead concerns may vanish. We illustrate the essential steps for operating a self-adaptive RIS under rich scattering based on a prototypical case study. We discover that self-adaptive RISs outperform context-ignorant RISs only below a certain noise threshold that depends, among other factors, on how strongly uncontrolled perturbers impact the wireless channel. Abstract: International audience; Last-mile collection and delivery services often rely on multi-echelon logistic systems with many types of practical spatial, temporal, and resource constraints. We consider three extensions of the basic 2-echelon vehicle routing problem that are of practical interest: First, second-echelon vehicles need to simultaneously deliver and collect goods at customers within their specified time window. Second, first-echelon vehicles are allowed to perform multiple trips during the planning horizon. Third, the intermediate facilities, called satellites, allow temporary storage of goods, but the quantity that can be stored at a time is limited. This paper integrates these complicating features in a single mathematical model. To solve the problem, we design a decomposition-based matheuristic. It employs a reduced and refined mixed-integer programming formulation and two echelon-specific large neighborhood searches (LNS) to produce improving routes for the respective echelon. The most important algorithmic component is the feasibility check of LNS that relies on a sequence of constant-time and low-complexity tests. The final test allows rescheduling of the operations taking place at a satellite. It adapts the double-justification algorithm known from the scheduling literature. Extensive computational experiments systematically evaluate the new components of the matheuristic and benchmark it against a recent exact method for a related problem. Moreover, the impact of the main problem features such as the number of satellites and their capacity as well as the integration of forward and reverse flows is analyzed.

Abstract: Background: Recently, common genetic risk factors for intracranial aneurysm (IA) and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH) were found to explain a large amount of disease heritability and therefore have potential to be used for genetic risk prediction. We constructed a genetic risk score to (1) predict ASAH incidence and IA presence (combined set of unruptured IA and ASAH) and (2) assess its association with patient characteristics. Methods: A genetic risk score incorporating genetic association data for IA and 17 traits related to IA (so-called metaGRS) was created using 1161 IA cases and 407 392 controls from the UK Biobank population study. The metaGRS was validated in combination with risk factors blood pressure, sex, and smoking in 828 IA cases and 68 568 controls from the Nordic HUNT population study. Furthermore, we assessed association between the metaGRS and patient characteristics in a cohort of 5560 IA patients. Results: Per SD increase of metaGRS, the hazard ratio for ASAH incidence was 1.34 (95% CI, 1.20–1.51) and the odds ratio for IA presence 1.09 (95% CI, 1.01–1.18). Upon including the metaGRS on top of clinical risk factors, the concordance index to predict ASAH hazard increased from 0.63 (95% CI, 0.59–0.67) to 0.65 (95% CI, 0.62–0.69), while prediction of IA presence did not improve. The metaGRS was statistically significantly associated with age at ASAH (β=−4.82×10 −3 per year [95% CI, −6.49×10 −3 to −3.14×10 −3 ]; P =1.82×10 −8 ), and location of IA at the internal carotid artery (odds ratio=0.92 [95% CI, 0.86–0.98]; P =0.0041). Conclusions: The metaGRS was predictive of ASAH incidence, although with limited added value over clinical risk factors. The metaGRS was not predictive of IA presence. Therefore, we do not recommend using this metaGRS in daily clinical care. Genetic risk does partly explain the clinical heterogeneity of IA warranting prioritization of clinical heterogeneity in future genetic prediction studies of IA and ASAH.

Abstract: International audience; This paper introduces a procedure for multi-objective optimisation, for compact wideband superdirective antenna array design, using network characteristic modes. The two main objectives considered are the maximisation of the directivity in the end-fire direction, simultaneously with the minimisation of the input reflection coefficient in a large bandwidth. The proposed method is used thereafter for designing a three-element superdirective small Yagi antenna, with an overall dimensions of 0.4 lambda x 0.37 lambda x 0.18 lambda. The length of this mini yagi antenna is 60% shorter than a classical one, with the same performances of gain and bandwidth. The measured results show that the antenna bandwidth, maximum gain, and efficiency are of 11.2%, 8 dBi, and 95% respectively.

Abstract: International audience; To face market volatility, reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) aim to efficiently and cost-effectively react to changes. We focus on one characteristic of RMS: the scalability (ability to adapt the volume of throughput). In the literature, the only few indicators for scalability are not always formally defined and usually only consider a partial view of scalability. Moreover, most of them are actually more suited for the configuration planning rather than for the design. However, the design of the RMS has a high impact on its scalability. We propose the first combinatorial definition of this problem and a new measure to fully assess the scalability of a system at the design phase. This measure, based on a multi-objective approach, can assess the scalability of single-product manufacturing systems, analysing all configurations that it can implement. We present numerical experiments to compare this indicator with a state-of-the-art scalability indicator and with some classical production line design indicators, and we show that future research should focus on scalability as a specific criterion to optimise during the design of an RMS. In addition, the results obtained allow us to infer some managerial insights on the best levers to use when performing a reconfiguration for scalability purpose.

Abstract: Low hypodiploidy defines a rare subtype of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) with a dismal outcome. To investigate the genomic basis of low-hypodiploid ALL (LH-ALL) in adults, we analyzed copy-number aberrations, loss of heterozygosity, mutations, and cytogenetics data in a prospective cohort of Philadelphia (Ph)-negative B-ALL patients (n = 591, ages 18–84 years), allowing us to identify 80 LH-ALL cases (14%). Genomic analysis was critical for evidencing low hypodiploidy in many cases missed by cytogenetics. The proportion of LH-ALL within Ph-negative B-ALL dramatically increased with age, from 3% in the youngest patients (under 40 years old) to 32% in the oldest (over 55 years old). Somatic TP53 biallelic inactivation was the hallmark of adult LH-ALL, present in virtually all cases (98%). Strikingly, we detected TP53 mutations in posttreatment remission samples in 34% of patients. Single-cell proteogenomics of diagnosis and remission bone marrow samples evidenced a preleukemic, multilineage, TP53-mutant clone, reminiscent of age-related clonal hematopoiesis.Significance:We show that low-hypodiploid ALL is a frequent entity within B-ALL in older adults, relying on somatic TP53 biallelic alteration. Our study unveils a link between aging and low-hypodiploid ALL, with TP53-mutant clonal hematopoiesis representing a preleukemic reservoir that can give rise to aneuploidy and B-ALL.See related commentary by Saiki and Ogawa, p. 102.This article is highlighted in the In This Issue feature, p. 101

Abstract: International audience; In dependent type theory, impredicativity is a powerful logical principle that allows the definition of propositions that quantify over arbitrarily large types, potentially resulting in self-referential propositions. Impredicativity can provide a system with increased logical strength and flexibility, but in counterpart it comes with multiple incompatibility results. In particular, Abel and Coquand showed that adding definitional uniqueness of identity proofs (UIP) to the main proof assistants that support impredicative propositions (Coq and Lean) breaks the normalization procedure, and thus the type-checking algorithm. However, it was not known whether this stems from a fundamental incompatibility between UIP and impredicativity or if a more suitable algorithm could decide type-checking for a type theory that supports both. In this paper, we design a theory that handles both UIP and impredicativity by extending the recently introduced observational type theory TTobs with an impredicative universe of definitionally proof-irrelevant types, as initially proposed in the seminal work on observational equality of Altenkirch et al. We prove decidability of conversion for the resulting system, that we call CCobs , by harnessing proof-irrelevance to avoid computing with impredicative proof terms. Additionally, we prove normalization for CCobs in plain Martin-Löf type theory, thereby showing that adding proof-irrelevant impredicativity does not increase the computational content of the theory.

Abstract: International audience; Eventual consistency is a consistency model that favors liveness over safety. It is often used in large-scale distributed systems where models ensuring a stronger safety incur performance that are too low to be deemed practical. Eventual consistency tends to be uniformly applied within a system, but we argue a demand exists for differentiated eventual consistency, e.g. in blockchain systems.We propose UPS to address this demand. UPS is a novel consistency mechanism that works in pair with our novel two-phase epidemic broadcast protocol GPS to offer differentiated eventual consistency and delivery speed. We propose two complementary analyses of the broadcast protocol: a continuous analysis and a discrete analysis based on compartmental models used in epidemiology. Additionally, we propose the formal definition of a scalable consistency metric to measure the consistency trade-off at runtime. We evaluate UPS in two simulated worldwide settings: a one-million-node network and a network emulating that of the Ethereum blockchain. In both settings, UPS reduces inconsistencies experienced by a majority of the nodes and reduces the average message latency for the remaining nodes.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we quantify microscale heating at the level of cutaneous nerves and capillaries due to continuous and pulsed plane-wave exposure at 60 GHz. The thermal properties of the nerves and capillaries were derived using mixture equations based on their water content. The electromagnetic problem was solved in conjunction with Pennes bioheat equation and Arrhenius equation using finite element method to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of temperature along with thermal damage within cutaneous nerves and capillaries. Although, the maximum power density within the nerve (41.6 kW/m 3 ) and capillary (20 kW/m 3 ) was 37.3% and 30.2% higher than surrounding skin for a continuous exposure at 10 W/m 2 , the peak temperature elevation ( ΔT ) within the nerve (93.3 n°C) and capillary (90.7 n°C) occurred after 5 μ s and 10 μ s of exposure and was 19.2% and 17.7% higher than surrounding skin, respectively. The nerve and capillary attained thermal equilibrium with skin after roughly 10 ms. The maximal ΔT within the nerve (0.5 °C) and capillary (0.25 °C) due to nano- and micro-second 60 GHz pulses with highest fluence (0.48 kJ/m 2 ) permitted under ICNIRP guidelines was 34% and 24% higher than in the surrounding skin. Ten 3 μs 60 GHz pulses (power density = 13.4 GW/m 2 ) separated by 10 s of cooling period were used to demonstrate the possibility of selective thermal ablation of cutaneous nerves [damage index ( Ω )=1.1)] without damaging skin ( Ω = 0.15). The results provide valuable insights into local millimeter-wave induced heating within various skin substructures.

In order to design, develop, deploy, maintain and evolve Fog systems, languages are required for properly modeling both their entities (e.g., infrastructures, topologies, resources configurations) and their specific features such as the locality concept, QoS constraints applied on resources (e.g., energy, data privacy, latency) and their dependencies, the dynamicity of considered workloads, the heterogeneity of both applications and devices, etc. This paper provides a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in terms of Fog modeling languages. We relied on our long-term experience in Cloud Computing and Cloud Modeling to contribute a feature model describing what we believe to be the most important characteristics of Fog modeling languages. We also performed a systematic scientific literature search and selection process to obtain a list of already existing Fog modeling languages. Then, we evaluated and compared these Fog modeling languages according to the characteristics expressed in our feature model. As a result, we discuss in this paper the main capabilities of these Fog modeling languages and propose a corresponding set of open research challenges in this area. We expect the presented work to be helpful to both current and future researchers or engineers working on/with Fog systems, as well as to anybody genuinely interested in Fog Computing or more generally in distributed systems.

Abstract: International audience; In this work we present the design and fabrication in metallic 3D-printing of a compact conformal slotted waveguide antenna array operating in the Ku-band. The application objective, although not limited only to this, is the optimisation of an antenna element which by stacking will be able to form a quasi-cylindrical sector. A beamforming network will be used for beam-steering in the elevation plane as coverage in the azimuthal plane is guaranteed by the conformal geometry. The compact design of the antenna element is therefore of great significance. For this reason, a direct feeding scheme by a coaxial connector is adopted. The antenna has been optimized following multiple parametric analyses of its geometrical parameters for the enhancement of the bandwidth, return losses and realized gain. The antenna was fabricated with Selective Laser Melting in aluminium and the experimental results agree well with the numerically calculated ones. The proposed CSWAA exhibits a reflection coefficient below -10 dB, realized gain above 14 dBi, as well as good cross-polarization and side-lobe level over a relative bandwidth of 8%.

This paper details two main approaches based on Cosserat rod modeling, namely the Newtonian and Lagrangian approaches. We provide a walk-through guide regarding theoretical derivations and numerical implementation of both approaches, together with a proof of equivalence. This comparative study is supplemented with novel contributions and extensions of each approach and in-depth discussion of their performances and applicability, as well as highlighting their special features.

However, theassumption of Gaussian noise in most co-prime array process-ing research leads to model mismatch in practical scenariosof impulsive noise, therefore has an adverse impact on theestimation of direction of arrival (DOA) of the incoming sources.Moreover, co-prime array builds an enlarged virtual array byvectorizing the covariance matrix of the received signals, wherethe equivalent received signals of the virtual array have only asingle snapshot. In this paper, we propose an enhanced fractionallow-order method (EFLOM) for co-prime array configurationin the scenarios of impulsive noise, from the perspective ofpseudo snapshot augmentation. Since impulsive noise does nothave finite second-order statistics or high-order cumulant, weconstruct a series of equivalent covariance matrices by usingphased fractional low-order moments with different orders of thereceived signals. Then, the vectorization of the multiple equivalentcovariance matrices can be considered as the equivalent receivedsignals of virtual array with multiple pseudo snapshots. Sincemultiple pseudo snapshots are constructed from the same sources,additional spatial smoothing preprocessing operations are stillneeded for enforced decorrelation. In this paper, we propose animproved spatial smoothing (ISS) technique by applying the in-formation of both autocorrelation and cross subarray correlationin the covariance matrix. Afterwards, the classical multiple signalclassification (MUSIC) is applied for the estimation of DOAs.In addition, the proposed method can also be extended to theother sparse array geometrics. The performance of the proposedmethod is theoretically verified and simulations are providedto show its effectiveness in terms of the generalized signal tonoise ratio (GSNR), parameter of impulsive noise, and angleseparation. Simulation results show that the proposed method cangreatly improve the resolution, accuracy, and degrees of freedom(DOFs) in DOA estimation in presence of impulsive noise.

Abstract: A compact asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS)-fed monopole antenna is presented, which operates within the Bluetooth and UWB frequency bands with the capability to simultaneously reject the lower WLAN interfering band. The antenna consists of an inverted right triangle patch monopole loaded by open-ended L-shaped slits not only to produce the additional 2.4 GHz passband to the UWB design but also to achieve stopband characteristics around 5.2 GHz. The conceptual equivalent circuit model as well as characteristic mode analyses are carried out in the design evolution process. The proposed antenna has an overall size of only 20 mm x 10 mm, having the smallest area among the so far developed designs, which can be easily integrated within any wireless gadgets. A prototype is fabricated and measured to validate the design, demonstrating the predicted behavior fairly achieved by full-wave analysis. The antenna -10 dB operating bandwidth ranges from 2.38 to 2.42 GHz and from 3.35 to 11 GHz while rejecting from 4.69 to 5.2 GHz. Unlike the unwanted stopband, where the radiation characteristics are adequately deteriorated, the proposed antenna fairly provides stable omni-directional radiation patterns in the H-plane, and has an average efficiency (gain) of 87.3% (2.6 dBi) in the desired passband. As far as the antenna transient behavior is concerned, an adequate measured (simulated) system fidelity factor of 0.7 (0.68) is achieved for the transmission of impulse-type UWB signals in the face-to-face configuration.

Abstract: In this paper, we study a paratransit application in which children are transported every day from their homes to their special schools or medical-social establishments. To optimize this transportation system, the establishments collaborate to propose a joint transportation plan. We propose a new algorithm to jointly build vehicle routes that visit several establishments and simultaneously set the establishments’ opening hours. This algorithm combines a large neighborhood search, the resolution of a route-based model, and the progressive shrinkage of the planning window. It is applied to a real case from the area of Lyon in France, including 34 schools and 575 heterogeneous users served by a heterogeneous fleet of reconfigurable vehicles. On average, we show that in addition to the 10% of saving that can be expected by sharing vehicle routes between schools, 7% of additional savings can be achieved by school bell adjustment. This cost saving also decreases average user ride times and the number of vehicles required, creating longer routes that are more attractive for driver services. Abstract: International audience; The puzzling case of the mixing between the charge transfer (CT) and local excited (LE) characters upon twisting of the geometry of N-phenylpyrrole (N-PP) is investigated considering the six low-lying singlet excited states (ES). The theoretical calculations of the potential energy surfaces (PES) have been performed for these states using a Coupled Cluster method accounting for the impact of the contributions from the triples, many-body Green's function GW and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE) formalisms, as well as Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) using various exchange–correlation functionals. Our findings confirm that the BSE formalism is more reliable than TD-DFT for close-lying ES with mixed CT/LE nature. More specifically, BSE/GW yields a more accurate evolution of the excited state PES than TD-DFT when compared to the reference coupled cluster values. BSE/GW PES curves also show negligible exchange–correlation functional starting point dependency in sharp contrast with their TD-DFT counterparts.

Abstract: International audience; Protactinium (Z = 91) is a very rare actinide with peculiar physico-chemical properties. Indeed, although one may naively think that it behaves similarly to either thorium or uranium by its position in the periodic table, it may in fact follow its own rules. Because of the quite small energy gap between its valence shells (in particular the 5f and 6d ones) and also the strong influence of relativistic effects on its properties, it is actually a challenging element for theoretical chemists. In this article, we combine experimental information, chemical arguments and standard first-principle calculations, complemented by implicit and explicit solvation, to revisit the stepwise complexation of aqueous protactinium(V) with sulfate and oxalate dianionic ligands (SO42- and C2O42-, respectively). From a methodological viewpoint, we notably conclude that it is necessary to at least saturate the coordination sphere of protactinium(V) to reach converged equilibrium constant values. Furthermore, in the case of single complexations (i.e. with one sulfate or oxalate ligand bound in the bidentate fashion), we show that it is necessary to maintain the coordination of one hydroxyl group, thought of in the [PaO(OH)]^3+ precursor, to obtain coherent complexation constants. Therefore, we predict that this hydroxyl group is maintained in the formation of 1:1 complexes while we confirm that it is withdrawn when coordinating three sulfate or oxalate ligands. Finally, we stress that this work is a first step toward the future use of theoretical predictions to elucidate the enigmatic chemistry of protactinium in solution.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a compact reconfigurable bandstop filter suitable for multistandard and multiband mobile terminals is reported. The proposed dual bandstop filter consists of a microstrip line coupled to two switchable Capacitively Loaded Loops (CLLs). We achieve the tuning of individual notched frequency bands by using open circuits as switches and incorporated in each CLL element. The performance characteristics in terms of S-parameters and surface currents distribution show that the proposed filter is able to adjust two stopbands independently in a wide tuning range. A corresponding prototype of tunable dual-stopband filter is manufactured, and practical measurements agree well with the simulation results.

Abstract: International audience; Interactions among plants have been long recognized as a major force driving plant community dynamics and crop yield. Surprisingly, our knowledge of the ecological genetics associated with variation of plant-plant interactions remains limited. In this opinion article by scientists from complementary disciplines, the international PLANTCOM network identified four timely questions to foster a better understanding of the mechanisms mediating plant assemblages. We propose that by identifying the key relationships among phenotypic traits involved in plant-plant interactions and the underlying adaptive genetic and molecular pathways, while considering environmental fluctuations at diverse spatial and time scales, we can improve predictions of genotype-by-genotype-by-environment interactions and modeling of productive and stable plant assemblages in wild habitats and crop fields.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a new scheme to implement the iterative physical optics (IPO) approximation with edge diffraction for the scattering from large perfectly-conducting objects, for which, multiple reflections occur. The use of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) discretized by the Galerkin method of moments (MoM) with Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions leads to solving a linear system. The characteristic basis function method (CBFM) needs to invert the self-impedance sub-matrices to calculate the primary basis functions (PBFs). To accelerate this stage, these sub-linear systems are directly solved from the physical optics (PO) approximation. In addition, to improve the precision of PO, the EFIE-PO self-impedance matrix is derived analytically. This avoids to apply the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE), for which its principal value is related to PO. Numerical results showed that the resulting algorithm, CBFM-PO, predicts inherently the edge diffraction. A domain decomposition method is able to split up the geometry into blocks, for which either the PO or a LU decomposition is applied according to the sub-geometry. To accelerate the coupling steps, the adaptive cross approximation (ACA) is also implemented, and the resulting method is tested on different targets having a curvature and producing multiple reflections. The numerical results show that EFIE-CBFM-PO is more accurate than the conventional EFIE-CBFM-POJ (based on Jakobus et al. work), specially for objects with curvature.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the construction of a Knowledge Graph (KG) of Educational Resources (ER), where RDF reification is essential. The ERs are described based on the subjects they cover considering their relevance. RDF reification is used to incorporate this subject’s relevance. Multiple reification models with distinct syntax and performance implications for storage and query processing exist. This study aims to experimentally compare four statement-based reification models with four triplestores to determine the most pertinent choice for our KG. We built four versions of the KG. Each version has a distinct reification model, namely standard reification, singleton properties, named graphs, and RDF-star, which were obtained using RML mappings. Each of the four triplestores (Virtuoso, Jena, Oxigraph, and GraphDB) was setup four times (except for Virtuoso, which does not support RDF-star), and seven different SPARQL queries were experimentally evaluated. This study shows that standard reification and named graphs lead to good performance. It also shows that, in the particular context of the used KG, Virtuoso outperforms Jena, GraphDB, and Oxigraph in most queries. The recent specification of RDF-star and SPARQL-star sheds light on statement-level annotations. The empirical study reported in this paper contributes to the efforts towards the efficient usage of RDF reification. In addition, this paper shares the pipeline of the KG con- struction using standard semantic web technologies.

Abstract: One of the key questions about gene regulatory networks is how to predict complex dynamical properties based on the influence graph's topology. Earlier theoretical studies have identified conditions for complex dynamical properties, like multistability or oscillations, based on topological features, like the presence of a positive (negative) feedback loop. This work follows this path and aims to find a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of a periodic attractor in 4-dimensional (4 genes) repressilators based on a discrete modeling framework under some dynamical assumptions. These networks are extensions of the widely studied 3-dimensional repressilator, which has been used in synthetic biology to produce synthetic oscillations. While other researchers have explored specific extensions of the 3-dimensional repressilator to improve synthetic oscillation control, our work investigates all 4-dimensional networks with only inhibitions. By uncovering new insights about periodic attractors in these small networks, our findings could aid the design of new synthetic oscillations. We search for condition for period attractor in an exhaustive manner with the guide of a decision tree model. Our major contributions include: 1) discovering that, with one exception, the relations between gene regulation thresholds do not impact the existence of periodic attractors in any of the influence graphs considered in this study; 2) identifying a sufficient and necessary condition of simple form for the existence of a periodic attractor when the exception is ignored; 3) identifying new topological features of influence graphs that are necessary for predicting the existence of periodic attractor in 4-dimensional repressilators.

Abstract: International audience; Conventionally, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are evaluated on their ability to correctly recognize each word contained in a speech signal. In this context, the word error rate (WER) metric is the reference for evaluating speech transcripts. Several studies have shown that this measure is too limited to correctly evaluate an ASR system, which has led to the proposal of other variants of metrics (weighted WER, BERTscore, semantic distance, etc.). However, they remain system-oriented, even when transcripts are intended for humans. In this paper, we firstly present Human Assessed Transcription Side-by-side (HATS), an original French manually annotated data set in terms of human perception of transcription errors produced by various ASR systems. 143 humans were asked to choose the best automatic transcription out of two hypotheses. We investigated the relationship between human preferences and various ASR evaluation metrics, including lexical and embedding-based ones, the latter being those that correlate supposedly the most with human perception.; Traditionnellement, les systèmes de reconnaissance automatique de la parole (RAP) sont évalués sur leur capacité à reconnaître correctement chaque mot contenu dans un signal vocal. Dans ce contexte, la mesure du taux d'erreur-mot est la référence pour évaluer les transcriptions vocales. Plusieurs études ont montré que cette mesure est trop limitée pour évaluer correctement un système de RAP, ce qui a conduit à la proposition d'autres variantes et d'autres métriques. Cependant, toutes ces métriques restent orientées "système'' alors même que les transcriptions sont destinées à des humains. Dans cet article, nous proposons un jeu de données original annoté manuellement en termes de perception humaine des erreurs de transcription produites par divers systèmes de RAP. 143 humains ont été invités à choisir la meilleure transcription automatique entre deux hypothèses. Abstract: International audience; This article demonstrates a confidential data vulner-ability in integrated circuits, especially in System-on-Chip (SoC)-field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits. We demonstratethat the electromagnetic (EM) emanations of internal AdvancedeXtensible Interface (AXI) standard data buses are exploitable.Electromagnetic pulses recorded by a near-field probe in thevicinity of such data buses can be mapped to the underlying dataflux, just as an electrocardiogram (ECG) would map the heartactivity and blood circulation. This vulnerability is demonstratedby spying on the EM emanations caused by internal buseswhile MNIST handwritten digit images are sent through them.The transmitted MNIST data are found to be framed by pre-amble and post-amble signals enabling the detection of thetransmitted data themselves. Data (images, in this paper) arethen reconstituted by using a simple algorithm.

Abstract: Grapevine and wine have deeply shaped the landscapes, economy and cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean. In France, it is considered that viticulture started in the south via contacts with Mediterranean populations (Greeks, Etruscans, Phoenicians), during the second half of the 1st millennium BCE, and spread further with the Romans. Wild grapevines were nevertheless present in various areas of the country all through the Holocene. No archaeological or historical source allows us to follow the history of grapevine and viticulture over the entire Holocene period and over the whole territory.In this paper we investigate the potential of archaeological plant macroremains (seed/fruits and wood) to trace the history of the vine on a large scale. We have assembled the largest possible database of published and unpublished archaeobotanical data, comprising 4449 site-phases for seed and fruits and 1356 site-phases for wood remains. In spite of taphonomic discrepancies and imbalances in the datasets, the different types of macroremains and modes of preservation produce consistent patterns. They provide the first comprehensive picture of the spread of grapevine, fluctuations in the economic role of viticulture and grape uses over time, although some periods and regions are less documented.Grapevine remains are regularly recorded from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age in most regions showing that human societies were already familiar with the wild plant and its fruits, especially in the Mediterranean. In this region, Vitis remains become considerably more frequent and numerous during the Iron Age, from around 500 BCE onwards, testifying to the rapid and strong implantation of viticulture. Grapevine macroremains confirm that the spread of viticulture outside the Mediterranean area occurred mainly during the Roman period. However, this expansion was limited and mainly focused on the South. The main expansion into the temperate zone took place during the Middle Ages. However, the more detailed fluctuations of viticulture, particularly in relation to climate oscillations are still difficult to follow. Pip remains are mainly associated with urban sites. This is a consequence of the actual consumption of grapes and may be evidence of a viticulture centered around urban areas.

Abstract: International audience; In terms of competitiveness, Business-IT Alignment (BITA) is still a crucial challenge for business leaders and CIOs, especially in the context of Digital Transformation and time-to-market challenges. Core Operational BITA can be seen as a projection of BITA to the Enterprise Information System perimeter, i.e., the operational alignment between the business processes and supporting IT. It is a major source of issues (e.g., strong couplings, maintenance costs, technical debt, slow adaptation). These cause a misalignment and thus contribute to the well-known Business-IT Gap. In this paper, we review the current state of this operational alignment in the context of Enterprise Architecture (EA) i.e. between the Business Process layer and the Application layer. Our analysis focuses on the models used at the Business Process and Application layers, the existing or potential links between these layers, and the use of these links to carry out a core operational alignment and facilitate the detection of potential divergence points. As a result, we notably outline some current limitations, such as modelling disparities, misuse of links between the two layers and an under-coverage of real alignment processes. We also discuss some lessons learned and future challenges, mainly around modelling needs and consistency management between the two considered layers.

Abstract: International audience; Deep learning is currently integrated into edge devices with strongenergy consumption and real-time constraints. To fulfill such re-quirements, high hardware performances can be provided by hard-ware acceleration of heterogeneous integrated circuits (IC) suchas System-on-Chip ( SoC)-field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).With the rising popularity of hardware accelerators for artificialintelligence ( AI ), more and more neural networks are employedin a variety of domains, involving computer vision applications.Autonomous driving, defence and medical domains are well-knownexamples from which the latter two in particular require processingsensitive and private data. Security issues of such systems shouldbe addressed to prevent the breach of privacy and unauthorisedexploitation of systems. In this paper, we demonstrate a confiden-tiality vulnerability in a SoC-based FPGA binarized neural net-work ( BNN) accelerator implemented with a recent mainstreamframework, FINN, and successfully extract the secret BNN inputimage by using an electromagnetic ( EM) side-channel attack. Ex-periments demonstrate that with the help of a near-field magneticprobe, an attacker can, with only one inference, directly retrievesensitive information from EM emanations produced by the in-ternal bus of the SoC-FPGA. Our attack reconstructs SoC- FPGAinternal images and recognizes a handwritten digit image with anaverage accuracy of 89% using a non-retrained MNIST classifier.Such vulnerability jeopardizes the confidentiality of SoC-FPGA em-bedded AI systems by exploiting side-channels that withstand theprotection of chip I/Os through cryptographic methods.

Abstract: International audience; Computer sound matching poses an inverse problem, namely, the identification of resynthesis parameters. Borrowing from the differentiable digital signal processing (DDSP) framework, we propose to automate its resolution by training a deep neural network. In this context, we aim to reach a compromise between the computational efficiency of parametric loss (P-loss) versus the psychoacoustical fidelity of spectral loss. Our approach, named ``perceptual--neural--physical'' (PNP), estimates the Riemannian metric which is associated to the composition between parametric synthesis and time--frequency scattering. By doing so, we locally linearize spectral loss and accelerate convergence. Furthermore, resorting to Tikhonov regularization improves the conditioning of the inverse problem. On an analysis--synthesis task for musical arpeggios, PNP training outperforms state-of-the-art methods P-loss (wav2shape) and STFT-based DDSP, as measured in terms of JTFS-based similarity between reference signal and reconstructed signal.; La transformation de sons par ordinateur pose un problème inverse d'identification des paramètres de resynthèse adéquats. Empruntant au formalisme du traitement du signal différentiable (DDSP), nous proposons d'automatiser sa résolution par entrainement d'un réseau de neurones profond. Dans ce contexte, nous visons un compromis entre l'efficacité computationnelle de la perte paramétrique et la fidélité psychoacoustique de la perte spectrale. Notre approche, baptisée perceptuelle-neuronalephysique (PNP), consiste à estimer la métrique riemannienne associée à la composition entre synthèse paramétrique et diffusion temps-fréquence (JTFS). Ce faisant, nous linéarisons localement la perte spectrale et accélérons la convergence. De plus, le recours à une régularisation de Tikhonov améliore le conditionnement du problème inverse. Par rapport à l'état de l'art (wav2shape et DDSP), et pour une tâche difficile d'analyse-synthèse d'arpège musical, l'entrainement via PNP rapproche le signal reconstruit du signal de référence, d'après une mesure de similarité de timbre fondée sur la JTFS.
