1. Caravan - A global community dataset for large-sample hydrology

Abstract

Abstract High-quality datasets are essential to support hydrological science and modeling. Several CAMELS (Catchment Attributes and Meteorology for Large-sample Studies) datasets exist for specific countries or regions, however these datasets lack standardization, which makes global studies difficult. This paper introduces a dataset called Caravan (a series of CAMELS) that standardizes and aggregates seven existing large-sample hydrology datasets. Caravan includes meteorological forcing data, streamflow data, and static catchment attributes (e.g., geophysical, sociological, climatological) for 6830 catchments. Most importantly, Caravan is both a dataset and open-source software that allows members of the hydrology community to extend the dataset to new locations by extracting forcing data and catchment attributes in the cloud. Our vision is for Caravan to democratize the creation and use of globally-standardized large-sample hydrology datasets. Caravan is a truly global open-source community resource.

Abstract

Water managers are actively incorporating climate change information into their long- and short-term planning processes. This is generally seen as a step in the right direction because it supplements traditional methods, providing new insights that can help in planning for a non-stationary climate. However, the continuous evolution of climate change information can make it challenging to use available information appropriately. Advice on how to use the information is not always straightforward and typically requires extended dialogue between information producers and users, which is not always feasible. To help navigate better the ever-changing climate science landscape, this review is organized as a set of nine guidelines for water managers and planners that highlight better practices for incorporating climate change information into water resource planning and management. Each DOs and DON'Ts recommendation is given with context on why certain strategies are preferable and addresses frequently asked questions by exploring past studies and documents that provide guidance, including real-world examples mainly, though not exclusively, from the United States. This paper is intended to provide a foundation that can expand through continued dialogue within and between the climate science and application communities worldwide, a two-way information sharing that can increase the actionable nature of the information produced and promote greater utility and appropriate use.

Abstract

Study region: The hydropower reservoir of Gigerwald is located in the alpine valley Calfeisental in eastern Switzerland. The lake is fed by runoff from rain, snow melt and ice melt from a few small glaciers, as well as by water collected in a neighbouring valley. Study focus: Water resources in the Alps are projected to undergo substantial changes in the coming decades. It is therefore essential to explore climate change impacts in catchments with hydropower facilities. We present a multi-dataset calibration (MDC) using discharge, snowcover data and glacier mass balances for an ensemble of hydrological simulations performed using the Hydrologiska Byråns Vattenbalansavdelning (HBV)-light model. The objective is to predict the future changes in hydrological processes in the catchment and to assess the benefits of a MDC compared to a traditional calibration to discharge only. New hydrological insights for the region: We found that the annual runoff dynamics will undergo significant changes with more runoff in winter and less in summer by shifting parts of the summer melt runoff to an earlier peak in spring. We furthermore found that the MDC reduces the uncertainty in the projections of glacial runoff and leads to a different distribution of runoff throughout the year than if calibrated to discharge only. We therefore argue that MDC leads to more consistent model results by representing the runoff generation processes more realistically.

In this article we investigate the action of (ramified and unramified) Hecke operators on automorphic forms for the function field of the projective line defined over a finite field and for the group GL_2. We first compute the dimension of the Hecke eigenspaces for every generator of the unramified Hecke algebra. Thus, we consider the ramification in a point of degree one and describe explicitly the action of certain ramified Hecke operators on automorphic forms. Moreover, for those ramified Hecke operators, we also compute the dimensions of its eigenspaces. We finish the article considering more general ramifications, namely, those one attached to a closed point of higher degree., Comment: 33 pages, comments are welcome. 13. Palisade structure in intact vaccinia virions

Abstract

ABSTRACT Vaccinia virus assembly in the cytoplasm of infected cells involves the formation of a biconcave viral core inside the maturing viral particle. The boundary of the core is defined by a pseudohexagonal palisade layer, composed of trimers projecting from an inner wall. To understand the assembly of this complex core architecture, we obtained a subnanometer structure of the palisade trimer by cryo-electron tomography and subtomogram averaging of purified intact virions. Using AlphaFold2 structure predictions, we determined that the palisade is formed from trimers of the proteolytically processed form of the viral protein A10. In addition, we found that each A10 protomer associates with an α-helix (residues 24–66) of A4. Cellular localization assays outside the context of infection demonstrate that the A4 N-terminus is necessary and sufficient to interact with A10. The interaction between A4 and A10 provides insights into how the palisade layer might become tightly associated with the viral membrane during virion maturation. Reconstruction of the palisade layer reveals that, despite local hexagonal ordering, the A10/A4 trimers are widely spaced, suggesting that additional components organize the lattice. This spacing would, however, allow the adoption of the characteristic biconcave shape of the viral core. Finally, we also found that the palisade incorporates multiple copies of a hexameric portal structure. We suggest that these portals are formed by E6, a viral protein that is essential for virion assembly and required to release viral mRNA from the core early in infection.IMPORTANCEPoxviruses such as variola virus (smallpox) and monkeypox cause diseases in humans. Other poxviruses, including vaccinia and modified vaccinia Ankara, are used as vaccine vectors. Given their importance, a greater structural understanding of poxvirus virions is needed. We now performed cryo-electron tomography of purified intact vaccinia virions to study the structure of the palisade, a protein lattice that defines the viral core boundary. We identified the main viral proteins that form the palisade and their interaction surfaces and provided new insights into the organization of the viral core.

Abstract

Background Establishing the optimal timing for creating vascular access in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a critical and challenging aspect of patient management. The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guidelines propose using a 40% 2-year threshold based on the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) for this purpose. However, the effectiveness of this threshold compared with traditional methods, such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), is not well-established. Methods In this monocentric retrospective cohort study, we analyzed data from patients referred for vascular mapping before arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation between April 2013 and June 2023. The study aimed to compare the ≥40% 2-year KFRE threshold with a <15 mL/min/1.73 m² eGFR threshold for predicting end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). We assessed the probability of ESKD, considering death before AVF creation as a competing risk. Discrimination between KFRE and eGFR was evaluated using C-statistics. Results The study included 238 patients with a mean age of 65.2 years and a mean eGFR of 13.3 mL/min/1.73 m². Over a median follow-up of 10.7 months, 178 patients developed ESKD, and 21 died before ESKD. Probability of ESKD at 1 year was 77.6% (95% CI 69.9%–85.3%) using a ≥40% 4-variable KFRE threshold versus 65.8% (95% CI 58.3%–73.3%) using a <15 mL/min/1.73 m² eGFR threshold. The C-statistics indicated better predictive ability for the 8-variable KFRE at 6 months [0.82 (95% CI 0.76–0.88)], while both 4- and 8-variable KFRE models were effective for 1-year predictions [0.835 (95% CI 0.78–0.89) and 0.82 (95% CI 0.76–0.875), respectively]. Sensitivity and specificity analyses favored the ≥40% KFRE threshold over the eGFR threshold. Conclusions This study suggests that using a ≥40% 2-year KFRE threshold for planning vascular access in CKD patients is promising and potentially superior to the traditional <15 mL/min/1.73 m² eGFR threshold. Abstract

Global flood mapping has developed rapidly over the past decade, but previous approaches have limited scope, function, and accuracy. These limitations restrict the applicability and fundamental science questions that can be answered with existing model frameworks. Harnessing recently available data and modeling methods, this paper presents a new global ∼30 m resolution Global Flood Map (GFM) with complete coverage of fluvial, pluvial, and coastal perils, for any return period or climate scenario, including accounting for uncertainty. With an extensive compilation of global benchmark case studies—ranging from locally collected event water levels, to national inventories of engineering flood maps—we execute a comprehensive validation of the new GFM. For flood extent comparisons, we demonstrate that the GFM achieves a critical success index of ∼0.75. In the more discriminatory tests of flood water levels, the GFM deviates from observations by ∼0.6 m on average. Results indicating this level of global model fidelity are unprecedented in the literature. With an optimistic scenario of future warming (SSP1‐2.6), we show end‐of‐century global flood hazard (average annual inundation volume) increases are limited to 9% (likely range ‐6%–29%); this is within the likely climatological uncertainty of −8%–12% in the current hazard estimate. In contrast, pessimistic scenario (SSP5‐8.5) hazard changes emerge from the background noise in the 2040s, rising to a 49% (likely range of 7%–109%) increase by 2100. This work verifies the fitness‐for‐purpose of this new‐generation GFM for impact analyses with a variety of beneficial applications across policymaking, planning, and commercial risk assessment. Plain Language Summary: Computer models use a variety of data and physical equations to estimate the extent and depth of possible flood events. Global applications of these tools have been developed over the past decade, but they are not very good at simulating the behavior of real floods. In this paper, we address some key problems to make a global model that does a lot better than past ones. We apply new techniques to better understand how much water we need to put into the model for a given flood probability. This movement of water is simulated by the model over a more accurate map of the Earth's terrain than has been available previously, with river channels represented in a smarter way. We look at the projected changes in rainfall, river discharge, and sea levels for given levels of warming simulated by available climate models and adjust the probabilities of a given magnitude flood accordingly. The model results suggest that the effect of future climate change might be small relative to our ability to understand flood hazards today, but this depends heavily on how much carbon we emit in the coming decades. 46. Convergence law for hyper-graphs with prescribed degree sequences

Abstract

We view hyper-graphs as incidence graphs, i.e. bipartite graphs with a set of nodes representing vertices and a set of nodes representing hyper-edges, with two nodes being adjacent if the corresponding vertex belongs to the corresponding hyper-edge. It defines a random hyper-multigraph specified by two distributions, one for the degrees of the vertices, and one for the sizes of the hyper-edges. We develop the logical analysis of this framework and first prove a convergence law for first-order logic, then characterise the limit first-order theories defined by a wide class of degree distributions. Convergence laws of other models follow, and in particular for the classical Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi graphs and $k$-uniform hyper-graphs., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures
