Objective We aimed to assess the associations between sleep duration and Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI).Design Cross-sectional study.Setting The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2018).Participants A total 11 252 eligible participants who have complete information for sleep duration and VAI.Outcome measure The VAI index, which is sex-specific and takes into consideration factors such as waist circumference, body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, was calculated in accordance with prior research. Multiple linear regressions and subgroup analyses were employed to evaluate the connection between the duration of sleep and the VAI.Results The mean sleep duration and VAI of included participants were 7.05 hours/day and 2.03, respectively. After adjusting for the sociodemographic, lifestyle and other covariates, short sleep was significantly linked to increased VAI (β=0.15, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.28) in relation to middle sleep duration, whereas no significant association was found between long sleep duration and VAI. An L-shaped relationship was observed between sleep duration and VAI. When sleep duration was less than 7.5 hours/day, a negative association between sleep duration and VAI was obvious. However, when sleep duration was >7.5 hours/day, VAI was increased with a longer sleep duration, although it was not significant.Conclusions An L-shaped relationship was observed between sleep duration and VAI, with insufficient sleep, being independently linked to a higher VAI. This implies that sleep deprivation might be associated with visceral adipose distribution and disfunction.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between novel anthropometric indices, specifically the body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI), and the prevalence of kidney stone disease (KSD) within the general population of the United States (U.S.). Methods This study employed a cross-sectional analysis of participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2020. Various statistical methods, including multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS) plot curve, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and subgroup analysis, were utilized to examine the association between ABSI and BRI and the risk of KSD. Results A total of 39,251 individuals were included in the study. First, the RCS plot presented that a linear positive association was found between ABSI and BRI and KSD risk. Second, the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that, compared to the lowest quartile, the adjusted odds ratios (with 95% confidence intervals) for the prevalence of KSD across the quartiles of ASBI and BRI were 0.94 (0.67, 1.30), 1.55 (1.15, 2.10), and 1.74 (1.28, 2.35), respectively, in the fully adjusted model. Third, the ROC curve demonstrated that the area under the curve of ABSI, and BRI was significantly higher than traditional anthropometry or body composition measures, including BMI and waist circumference. Conclusions The findings of our study indicate that the discriminant ability of ABSI and BRI for KSD is significantly superior to that of BMI and waist circumference. Consequently, ABSI and BRI have the potential to more accurately identify an individual’s risk of developing KSD in a clinical setting.

P-band radiometry has been demonstrated to have a deeper sensing depth than L-band, making the consideration of multilayer microwave interactions necessary. In addition, the scattering and phase interference effects are different at the P-band, requiring a reconsideration of the need for coherent models. However, the impact remains to be clarified, and understanding the validity and limitations of these models at both L- and P-bands is crucial for their refinement and application. Therefore, two general categories of microwave emission models, including two stratified coherent models (Njoku and Wilhite) and four incoherent models (conventional tau-omega model and three multilayer models being zero-order, first-order, and incoherent solution), were intercompared for the first time on the same dataset. This evaluation utilized observations of L- and P-bands radiometry under different land cover conditions from a tower-based experiment in Victoria, Australia. Model estimations of brightness temperature (TB) were consistent with measurements, with the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) at P-band V-polarization under corn (2 K) and the highest RMSE at L-band H-polarization under bare soil (13 K). Coherent models performed slightly better than incoherent models under bare soil (3 K less RMSE), while the opposite was true under vegetated soil conditions (1 K less RMSE). Coherent and incoherent models showed maximum differences (3 K at P-band and 2 K at L-band), correlating strongly with soil moisture variations at 0–10 cm. Findings suggest that coherent and incoherent models performed similarly; thus, incoherent models may be preferable for estimating TB at L- and P-bands due to reduced computational complexity.

The NASA-launched Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite mission (SMAP) had the objective to globally characterize soil moisture with an intermediate resolution (9 km), through the integration of radar (3 km) and radiometer (36 km) observations. The SMAP team has evaluated various downscaling techniques to achieve this goal. This study examined the performance of an additional downscaling technique, the Bayesian merging method, as an alternative candidate approach. This method breaks from the standard linear downscaling techniques of SMAP, opting instead for a more innovative approach based on Bayes' theorem. Here, the intermediate resolution soil moisture is achieved via the incorporation of a background estimate, which is refined through comparison between observed and predicted brightness temperatures and backscatter coefficients that link the high- and low-resolution data. However, it is crucial to assess the robustness of the Bayesian method using actual satellite observations, in addition to its prior evaluation using synthetic datasets. The fourth Soil Moisture Active Passive Experiment (SMAPEx-4), conducted in Australia, represented the sole occasion for concurrent high-resolution airborne observations during operation of the SMAP radar. As such, this study employed the Bayesian algorithm using the SMAP datasets throughout the SMAPEx-4 period. Downscaled soil moisture products from this method, as well as from the official baseline and enhancement techniques, were compared. The average root-mean-square-error and R2 of the 9 km downscaled soil moisture were found to be 0.035 cm3/cm3 and 0.55 for the Bayesian method, 0.093 cm3/cm3 and 0.35 for the baseline, and 0.069 cm3/cm3 and 0.41 for the enhancement method.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based remote sensing has drawn increased attention in precision agriculture. Lightweight optical and thermal sensors have been used widely on UAVs for a range of applications, and have been proposed by some as the best approach to map soil moisture at farm scales. However, passive microwave remote sensing has been widely acknowledged as the most accurate soil moisture mapping technology, and adopted by the soil moisture and ocean salinity and soil moisture active and passive satellite missions. Accordingly, it is postulated that this will also be the best technique for UAV-based near-surface soil moisture remote sensing, overcoming the spatial resolution limitation from low earth orbit altitude. Being so far limited by sensor availability, only a small number of studies have illustrated the potential of UAV-based near-surface soil moisture mapping using L-band microwave radiometers, and there has been no direct comparison with the thermal-optical alternative. To guide the design of future UAV-based soil moisture mapping systems, airborne optical, thermal infrared, and passive microwave observations collected from a scientific aircraft at low altitude over a center-pivot irrigation farm in Tasmania, Australia were used in this study to simulate UAV-based observations, and the performances of the thermal-optical and microwave techniques when compared at 75 m scale. The L-band microwave emission showed a superior sensitivity to near-surface soil moisture, and a higher and more consistent soil moisture retrieval accuracy than thermal-optical, with a root-mean-squared error of 0.05–0.06 m3/m3 and 0.05–0.09 m3/m3, respectively.

BackgroundElevated preoperative γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels or reduced serum albumin levels have been established as negative prognostic factors for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and various other tumors. Nonetheless, the prognostic significance of the GGT to serum albumin ratio (GAR) in liver transplantation (LT) therapy for HCC is still not well-defined.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 141 HCC patients who underwent LT at Shulan (Hangzhou) Hospital from June 2017 to November 2020. Using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the optimal GAR cutoff value to predict outcomes following LT was assessed. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors associated with both overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS).ResultsA GAR value of 2.04 was identified as the optimal cutoff for predicting both OS and RFS, with a sensitivity of 63.2% and a specificity of 74.8%. Among these patients, 80 (56.7%) and 90 (63.8%) met the Milan and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) criteria, respectively. BackgroundIdiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is the most common pathological type in adults with nephrotic syndrome. Many target antigens have been discovered. However, dual antigen-positive IMN patients are very rare, with only a few such cases being briefly described in various studies. There is no specific study on the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of dual antigen-positive IMN patients, and the disease characteristics of such patients remain unclear.MethodsImmunohistochemical staining of PLA2R, THSD7A, and NELL-1 was conducted on kidney tissue samples obtained from patients diagnosed with IMN. Simultaneously, the presence of corresponding serum antibodies was determined. Patients exhibiting positivity for dual antigens were included in the study, identified either through tissue staining or serum antibody detection. We retrospectively collected their clinical, pathological, and follow-up data and measured their serum antibody levels at multiple time points. Additionally, the same type of dual antigen-positive IMN cases reported in the literature were reviewed to extract clinical, pathological, and prognostic information. We compared the data for all of the above dual antigen-positive and PLA2R single-positive IMN cases at our center.ResultsWe identified 6 IMN patients with dual antigen positivity at our center, approximately 0.7% of whole MN series; the previous literature reports 43 IMN patients with dual antigen positivity, the proportion ranged from 0.2% to 2.8%. The IgG1 positivity rate in the renal tissue of the dual antigen-positive patients at our center was significantly lower than that of dual antigen-positive patients previously reported (16.7% vs. 100.0%, p=0.015), but there was no significant difference in clinical or prognostic aspects. Patients with dual antigen positivity reported at our center and in the literature were combined and compared with PLA2R single-positive IMN reported at our center. Compared with PLA2R single-positive IMN patients, dual antigen-positive IMN patients had a higher renal tissue IgG1 positivity rate (58.3% vs. 22.3%, p=0.016), and the time required to achieve remission was longer [13.5 (3.3,35.0) vs. 3.0 (1.0,8.0), p=0.052]. Overall, The changes in urine protein were consistent with the changes in serum PLA2R antibody levels in dual antigen-positive IMN patients.ConclusionsFor patients with primary membranous nephropathy who did not attain remission following prolonged treatment, multiple target antigen staining should still be actively performed, even with positivity for the PLA2R target antigen.

The dengue virus, the primary cause of dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome, is the most widespread mosquito-borne virus worldwide. In recent decades, the prevalence of dengue fever has increased markedly, presenting substantial public health challenges. Consequently, the development of an efficacious vaccine against dengue remains a critical goal for mitigating its spread. Our research utilized Celcradle™, an innovative tidal bioreactor optimized for high-density cell cultures, to grow Vero cells for dengue virus production. By maintaining optimal pH levels (7.0 to 7.4) and glucose concentrations (1.5 g/L to 3.5 g/L) during the proliferation of cells and viruses, we achieved a peak Vero cell count of approximately 2.46 × 109, nearly ten times the initial count. The use of Celcradle™ substantially decreased the time required for cell yield and virus production compared to conventional Petri dish methods. Moreover, our evaluation of the immunogenicity of the Celcradle™-produced inactivated DENV4 through immunization of mice revealed that sera from these mice demonstrated cross-reactivity with DENV4 cultured in Petri dishes and showed elevated antibody titers compared to those from mice immunized with virus from Petri dishes. These results indicate that the dengue virus cultivated using the Celcradle™ system exhibited enhanced immunogenicity relative to that produced in traditional methods. In conclusion, our study highlights the potential of the Celcradle™ bioreactor for large-scale production of inactivated dengue virus vaccines, offering significant promise for reducing the global impact of dengue virus infections and accelerating the development of effective vaccination strategies.

A 2 μm wavelength band spot size converter (SSC) based on a trident structure is proposed, which is coupled to a lensed fiber with a mode field diameter of 5 μm. The cross-section of the first segment of the tapered waveguide structure in the trident structure is designed as a right-angled trapezoidal shape, which can further improve the performance of the SSC. The coupling loss of the SSC is less than 0.9 dB in the wavelength range of 1.95~2.05 μm simulated by FDTD. According to the experimental results, the lowest coupling loss of the SSC is 1.425 dB/facet at 2 μm, which is close to the simulation result. The device is compatible with the CMOS process and can provide a good reference for the development of 2 μm wavelength band integrated photonics.

Alizarin, a dyestuff from herbs, showed effective inhibition effects on pathogenic bacteria, and thus has been frequently used in the world as the main alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of inflammations and pathogen infections. However, it was unclear whether alizarin played key a role in antibiotic-induced antibiotic-resistant gene (ARG) alterations and impacted microbial community shifts in aquatic environments. In this study, the effects of alizarin or co-exposure of alizarin with antibiotics on the fate of ARGs, class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1), and microbial populations in lake water were investigated, and the potential hosts for ARGs were analyzed. The results showed that the absolute abundance of 16s rRNA gene, ARGs (tetA, tetC, and qnrS), and intI1 were increased during the treatment of alizarin. The combination of alizarin and antibiotics was superior to alizarin in its ability to promote population growth of bacteria and induce ARGs. Additionally, alizarin more significantly altered the community composition of microorganisms in water, which resulted in differences in bacterial communities and functions. HIGHLIGHTS Relationships among ARGs, intI1, and microbial community were obtained.; Exposure of alizarin promoted the growth of microbial populations.; Alizarin boost the absolute abundance of ARGs and intI1 to a higher extent.; Alizarin contributed obviously to changes in microbial communities and functions.;

Abstract Artificial electronic synapses are commonly used to simulate biological synapses to realize various learning functions, regarded as one of the key technologies in the next generation of neurological computation. This work used a simple spin coating technique to fabricate polyimide (PI):graphene quantum dots(GQDs) memristor structure. As a result, the devices exhibit remarkably stable exponentially decaying postsynaptic suppression current over time, as interpreted in the spike-timing-dependent plasticity phenomenon. Furthermore, with the increase of the applied electrical signal over time, the conductance of the electrical synapse gradually changes, and the electronic synapse also shows plasticity dependence on the amplitude and frequency of the pulse applied. In particular, the devices with the structure of Ag/PI:GQDs/ITO prepared in this study can produce a stable response to the stimulation of electrical signals between millivolt to volt, showing not only high sensitivity but also a wide range of “feelings”, which makes the electronic synapses take a step forwards to emulate biological synapses. Meanwhile, the electronic conduction mechanisms of the device are also studied and expounded in detail. The findings in this work lay a foundation for developing brain-like neuromorphic modeling in artificial intelligence.

ObjectiveTo observe the effects of scoliosis-specific exercise therapy combined with braces and orthopedic insoles on improved spinal deformity and walking ability in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).MethodFrom September 2019 to September 2020, 60 outpatient AIS patients were distributed into brace group (n = 30) at random and brace combined orthopedic insole group (n = 30). Both groups underwent brace dryness, and the observation group used scoliosis-specific exercise therapy combined with brace therapy, and on this basis, orthopedic insole intervention was added for 8 h per day for 2 months. At the same time, 20 adolescents of the same age with normal spinal development were recruited as a healthy group. GaitScan instruments were used to collect gait and plantar pressure measurements from study subjects. First, the gait and plantar pressure data of AIS patients and healthy groups were compared horizontally to ascertain the abnormal indicators, and then the spinal deformity and the above abnormal indicators were compared between the brace group and the brace combined orthopedic insole group.OutcomeThe plantar pressure center drift index (CPEI) in the AIS group was higher than that in the healthy group (F = 3.120, P 0.05). After treatment, the Cobb angle was significantly reduced in both the brace group and the brace combined with orthopedic insole group (P 0.05). Precision irrigation management and crop water stress assessment rely on accurate estimation of root zone soil moisture. However, only the top 5 cm soil moisture can be estimated using the two current passive microwave satellite missions, Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), which operate at L-band (wavelength of ∼21 cm). Since the contributing depth of the soil to brightness temperature increases with observation wavelength, it is expected that a P-band (wavelength of ∼40 cm) radiometer could potentially provide soil moisture information from deeper layers of the soil profile. Moreover, by combining both L- and P- bands, it is hypothesized that the soil moisture profile can be estimated even beyond their individual observation depths. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential of combined L-band and P-band radiometer observations to estimate the soil moisture profile under flat bare soil using a stratified coherent forward model. Brightness temperature observations at L-band and P-band from a tower based experimental site across a dry (April 2019) and a wet (March 2020) period, covering different soil moisture profile shapes, were used in this study. Results from an initial synthetic study showed that the performance of a combined L-band and P-band approach was better than the performance of using either band individually, with an average depth over which reliable soil moisture profile information could be estimated (i.e. with a target root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 0.04 m3/m3) being 20 cm for linear and 15 cm for second-order polynomial functions. Other functions were also tested but found to have a poorer performance. Applying the method to the tower-based brightness temperature achieved an average estimation depth of 28 cm (20 cm) and 5 cm (5 cm) during the dry and wet periods respectively when using a second-order polynomial (linear) function. These findings highlight the opportunity of a satellite mission with L-band and P-band observations to accurately estimate the soil moisture profile to as deep as 30 cm globally.

This work investigated the oxidation suppression effect of a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film applied to a Cu substrate, which may have application in electrical connectors. To ensure prolonged low electrical contact resistance, a thin GO film was formed using an electrophoretic deposition method and subsequently heated to generate rGO. The surface morphology and thickness of the rGO film were assessed using atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thickness of the rGO film was estimated to be 5–7 nm, and the electrical contact resistance for the Cu substrate with and without an rGO film was 20 and 8 mΩ, respectively, at a contact load of 2 N. After accelerating the oxidation of the substrate by heating for 30 min at 180 °C under a dry air atmosphere, the formation of a Cu2O layer on the Cu substrate was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The thickness of this oxide layer with and without an rGO film was 1.5 and 6 nm, respectively. In addition, the electrical contact resistance for the Cu substrate with and without the rGO film was 40 and 200 mΩ, respectively, at a contact load of 2 N. These results suggest that the thin rGO coating suppressed oxidation of the metal substrate while also suppressing the increase in contact resistance.

Abstract Background Primary duodenal cancer (PDC) is rare, especially signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) of the duodenal bulb, and it is commonly misdiagnosed as an ulceration. Here, we report a rare case of SRCC of the duodenal bulb presenting with gastrointestinal hemorrhage in an 82-year-old man. Case presentation An 82-year-old man was admitted for gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Physical examination revealed upper abdominal tenderness and pale appearance, but was otherwise unrevealing. Laboratory workup was significant for anemia. Imaging showed no abnormalities. Two endoscopic evaluations along with interventional embolization were attempted and, unfortunately, adequate hemostasis was not achieved, resulting in distal subtotal gastrectomy, including the duodenal bulb. SRCC of the duodenal bulb was diagnosed based on pathology after surgery. Post-operatively, the patient experienced persistent gastrointestinal bleeding. Family declined further intervention and the patient eventually died one month post-resection. Conclusions SRCC in the duodenal bulb is difficult to diagnose. For those with high-risk factors, endoscopic examination and biopsy are recommended. For patients who can receive radical tumor resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is considered a first-line option. Early diagnosis and resection have been shown to improve prognosis.

IntroductionImmunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) presents various clinical manifestations and pathological phenotypes. Approximately 5% of patients with IgAN present with early onset nephrotic syndrome, mild mesangial lesions, and diffuse foot process effacement of podocytes, which resemble minimal change disease (MCD). These patients are defined as MCD-IgAN. Whether MCD-IgAN is a special type of IgAN or simply MCD accompanied by IgA deposition remains controversial.MethodsA total of 51 patients diagnosed with MCD-IgAN at Beijing Anzhen Hospital from January 2010 to September 2022 were recruited. The clinical and pathological characteristics of IgA-MCD were analyzed. Patients with IgAN but without MCD (non-MCD-IgAN) and healthy participants were enrolled as controls. Galactose-deficient immunoglobulin A1 (Gd-IgA1) and complement C3 were detected both in the circulation and in renal tissues.ResultsWe found that the levels of serum Gd-IgA1 were lower in participants with MCD-IgAN than in those with non-MCD-IgAN, but higher than in healthy participants. Gd-IgA1 was rarely deposited in the glomeruli of participants with MCD-IgAN, with a positive rate of only 13.7% (7/51); in contrast, the positive rate in participants with non-MCD-IgAN was 82.4% (42/51). Among renal Gd-IgA1-positive patients, Gd-IgA1 and immunoglobulin A (IgA) colocalized along the glomerular mesangial and capillary areas. Interestingly, we found that the circulating levels of complement C3 were significantly higher in participants with MCD-IgAN than in participants with non-MCD-IgAN. In addition, the intensity of C3c in glomeruli in participants with MCD-IgAN was significantly weaker than in participants with non-MCD-IgAN.ConclusionsOur study suggests that, in MCD-IgAN, most of the IgA that is deposited on glomeruli is not the same pathogenic Gd-IgA1 as found in general IgAN. Complement activation both in the circulation and in the renal locality was much weaker in MCD-IgAN than in non-MCD-IgAN. Our study suggests that IgAN with MCD might be MCD with coincidental IgA deposition.

Abstract Background Renal insufficiency (RI) is a frequent comorbidity among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We aimed to evaluate the attributable risk associated with mild RI for the in-hospital outcomes in patients with ACS. Methods The Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-ACS (CCC-ACS) Project was a collaborative study of the American Heart Association and the Chinese Society of Cardiology. A total of 92,509 inpatients with a discharge diagnosis of ACS were included. The attributable risk was calculated to investigate the effect of mild RI (eGFR 60-89 ml / min · 1.73 m2) on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) during hospitalization. Results The average age of these ACS patients was 63 years, and 73.9% were men. The proportion of patients with mild RI was 36.17%. After adjusting for other possible risk factors, mild RI was still an independent risk factor for MACEs in ACS patients. In the ACS patients, the attributable risk of eGFR 60-89ml/min·1.73m2 to MACEs was 7.78%, 4.69% of eGFR 45-59 ml/min·1.73m2, 4.46% of eGFR 30-44 ml/min·1.73m2, and 3.36% of eGFR

Precision agriculture is experiencing substantial development through the improved availability of cost-effective instruments for data collection. This includes ground-based proximal sensing technologies that are able to compete with satellite and aircraft observation systems, due to low operational costs, high operational flexibility, and high spatial resolution. This article was therefore designed to compare the performance of multiple sensing systems mounted on a smart buggy platform. A number of proximal sensing technologies were then evaluated and intercompared for their accuracy in retrieving high resolution near-surface soil moisture. The sensors tested included an L-band microwave radiometer (ELBARA III), a global navigation satellite system reflectometer sensor (LARGO), and an electromagnetic induction sensor (EM38). Data were collected during the fifth Soil Moisture Active Passive Experiment (SMAPEx-5) in Yanco, NSW, Australia, in September 2015. Observations from each sensor were converted to surface soil moisture values which were in turn evaluated against reference measurements obtained by in situ soil moisture measurements. The sensing technologies tested here have been individually assessed by many other studies, but within different regions and environments including surface condition, local weather, observing height, size of footprint, etc. Consequently, this article has used a single platform to intercompare the different sensors to be evaluated concurrently. Results from this article indicated that the L-band microwave radiometer achieved the best performance in retrieving surface soil moisture. The average RMSE and R were found to be 0.055 cm3/cm3 and 0.68 for ELBARA III, 0.084 cm3/cm3 and 0.51 for LARGO, and 0.090 cm3/cm3 and 0.32 for the EM38.

Antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to the public health domain. A favorable platform for generating and disseminating antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) is provided by landscaped fish ponds created by urbanization. This research delved into the effects exerted by different concentrations of specific antibiotics, namely tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, on the microbial community composition present in water samples obtained from a landscape pond. Additionally, we analyzed the abundance of ARGs and the class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1), and identified potential hosts of ARGs. The results indicated that the consistent administration of antibiotics significantly influenced the microbial community structure, resulting in variations within both bacterial communities and functionalities. Furthermore, the absolute quantities of ARGs, including tetA, tetC, qnrA, and qnrS, as well as the integrase gene intI1, exhibited augmentation in response to varying types and concentrations of antibiotics. Notably, the regular input of low concentrations of antibiotics produced higher levels of abundance of ARGs than the regular input of higher concentrations of antibiotics. The use of different types of antibiotics led to diverse host bacteria structures.

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has opened up new possibilities in various industries. However, with the increasing number of Internet of Drones (IoD) networks, the risk of network attacks is also rising, making it increasingly difficult to identify malicious attacks on IoD systems. To improve the accuracy of intrusion detection for IoD and reduce the probability of false positives and false negatives, this paper proposes a Q-learning-based two-layer cooperative intrusion detection algorithm (Q-TCID). Specifically, Q-TCID employs an intelligent dynamic voting algorithm that optimizes multi-node collaborative intrusion detection strategies at the host level, effectively reducing the probability of false positives and false negatives in intrusion detection. Additionally, to further reduce energy consumption, an intelligent auditing algorithm is proposed to carry out system-level auditing of the host-level detections. Both algorithms employ Q-learning optimization strategies and interact with the external environment in their respective Markov decision processes, leading to close-to-optimal intrusion detection strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed Q-TCID algorithm optimizes the defense strategies of the IoD system, effectively prolongs the mean time to failure (MTTF) of the system, and significantly reduces the energy consumption of intrusion detection.

Integrating the graded index (GRIN) waveguide with the 2-D inversely-tapered waveguide, a new design of spot size converter (SSC) has been proposed to couple the light beam between the cleaved single-mode fiber (SMF) and the silicon (Si) wire waveguide on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The device demonstrates a low coupling loss of 0.27 dB when it is coupled to a cleaved SMF. The polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is less than 0.25 dB, and the 1-dB alignment tolerance is about −2.0~2.0 µm for both vertical and horizontal directions. At the same time, the starting tip width of the tapered waveguide is kept at the level of the lithography limitation at the current commercial silicon photonics fab. This integrated SSC could be an improved design for reducing the coupling loss between the cleaved SMF and the Si waveguide.

Energy shortage in various parts of the world has an adverse impact on people's quality of life and the overall development of these areas. Pakistan is among the world's energy-deficient countries, with a 7000 MW (Mega-Watt) energy deficit due to higher energy demand and lower energy production. Because of its hot climate, Pakistan has great potential to meet its energy needs using renewable energy (RE) sources, particularly solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, to boost clean energy production. Considering this, the current study investigates the factors influencing households' purchase intentions of solar PV technology in Pakistan. This research has developed a comprehensive research model by integrating the Technology Readiness Index (TRI) and Theory of Planned Behaviour (PTB). Data from households were collected using a questionnaire survey method. This was a cross-sectional study that used a non-probability sampling technique. In four provincial capitals (Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, and Peshawar) and the federal capital (Islamabad), 420 questionnaires were distributed to household heads. Smart PLS 3.0 was used to test the hypotheses proposed by decomposing personal traits (product knowledge, environmental concern, ecological lifestyle, and perceived benefits) and technological factors (technology innovativeness and technology optimism) and examining their impact on consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products. This study also examined the role of perceived consumer effectiveness as a moderator between consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products and purchase intentions. The empirical findings showed that product knowledge, ecological lifestyle, perceived benefits, innovativeness, and optimism positively and significantly impact consumers' attitudes toward solar photovoltaic products. Likewise, consumer attitude has a positive and significant impact on purchase intention of solar PV products. Subsequently, the moderating role of perceived consumer effectiveness in the relationship between consumer attitudes and purchase intentions of solar PV products was also significantly correlated. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of the study, as well as its limitations and future directions, are discussed.

Abstract Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study aimed to explore the frequency and impact of AF on clinical outcomes in CKD patients with ACS. Methods CKD inpatients with ACS between November 2014 and December 2018 were included based on the improving care for cardiovascular disease in China-ACS (CCC-ACS) project. Included patients were divided into an AF group and a non-AF group according to the discharge diagnosis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to adjust for potential confounders. IntroductionIgA nephropathy (IgAN) encompasses a wide range of clinical and histology features. Some patients present without hematuria, with or without hypertension, still rapidly progress in renal function. Renal pathology of this part of patients were predominant intrarenal arteriolar lesions, rarely presented glomerular proliferative lesions. We aim to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics and prognosis of these IgAN patients and initially explore whether the abnormal activation of complement is involved in the intrarenal arteriolar lesions of IgAN.MethodsA total of 866 patients with renal biopsy-proven IgAN diagnosed at Beijing Anzhen Hospital were recruited. IgAN patients without intrarenal arteriolar lesions and proliferative lesions were excluded (n = 115), the rest were divided into arteriolar lesions group (n = 202) and proliferative lesions group (n = 549). Among them, 255 patients were regularly followed up for at least 1 year. Renal biopsy tissues of 104 IgAN patients were stained for complement components by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence.ResultsCompared with proliferative lesions group, the arteriolar lesions group experienced high percentage of hypertension (p = 0.004), low percentage of gross hematuria (p = 0.001), microscopic hematuria (p < 0.001) and less initial proteinuria (p = 0.033). Renal survival between the two groups was not significantly different (p = 0.133). MBL, C4d, FH and FHR5, C3c, and MAC deposited on intrarenal arteriole in arteriolar lesions group. Compare with the proliferative lesion group, the arteriolar lesions group exhibited a higher intensity of C3c deposition on the intrarenal arterioles (p = 0.048). C3c and CD31 co-deposited on intrarenal arterioles area in patients with intrarenal arteriolar lesions.ConclusionRenal survival of the IgAN patients in arteriolar lesions group was not better than those in proliferative lesions group. Abnormal activation of complement may be involved in the pathogenesis of arteriolar damage through the injury of endothelial cells in this clinical phenotype of IgAN.

Microwave radiometry has provided valuable spaceborne observations of Earth's geophysical properties for decades. The recent SMOS, Aquarius, and SMAP satellites have demonstrated the value of measurements at 1400 MHz for observing surface soil moisture, sea surface salinity, sea ice thickness, soil freeze/thaw state, and other geophysical variables. However, the information obtained is limited by penetration through the subsurface at 1400 MHz and by a reduced sensitivity to surface salinity in cold or wind-roughened waters. Recent airborne experiments have shown the potential of brightness temperature measurements from 500–1400 MHz to address these limitations by enabling sensing of soil moisture and sea ice thickness to greater depths, sensing of temperature deep within ice sheets, improved sensing of sea salinity in cold waters, and enhanced sensitivity to soil moisture under vegetation canopies. However, the absence of significant spectrum reserved for passive microwave measurements in the 500–1400 MHz band requires both an opportunistic sensing strategy and systems for reducing the impact of radio-frequency interference. Here, we summarize the potential advantages and applications of 500–1400 MHz microwave radiometry for Earth observation and review recent experiments and demonstrations of these concepts. We also describe the remaining questions and challenges to be addressed in advancing to future spaceborne operation of this technology along with recommendations for future research activities.

Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most common and serious complications in patients with type B aortic dissection (TBAD). This study aimed at investigating the incidence and risk factors of in-hospital AKI in TBAD patients involving the renal artery who underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) only. Methods A total of 256 patients who were diagnosed as TBAD combined with renal artery involvement were included in this retrospective study. All patients were divided into the AKI group and the non-AKI group according to the KDIGO criteria. The risk factors for AKI were identified using a multivariate logistic regression model. Results A total of 256 patients were included in this study, and the incidence of AKI was 18% (46/256). Patients in the AKI group were more likely to have a higher proportion of the youth, a higher level of body mass index, and a shorter time from onset to admission. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the youth (age ≤40 years) (OR: 2.853, 95%CI: 1.061–7.668, p = .038) were prone to AKI, and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (OR: 1.526, per 15-ml/min/1.73 m2 decrease, 95%CI: 1.114–2.092; p = .009), higher diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (OR: 1.418, per 10-mmHg increase; 95%CI: 1.070–1.879; p = .015), and fasting blood glucose (FBG) ≥7 mmol/L on admission (OR: 2.592; 95%CI: 1.299–5.174; p = .007) were independent risk factors for AKI. Conclusions Higher incidence of AKI had been perceived in this study, most of them were young and middle-aged patients. Renopreventive measures should be considered in those high-risk patients with younger age, lower eGFR, higher DBP, and higher FBG on admission.

Background The incidence and the risk factors of in-hospitalized acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) were unclear. Methods The Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-AF (CCC-AF) project is an ongoing registry and quality improvement project, with 240 hospitals recruited across China. We selected 4527 patients hospitalized for AF registered in the CCC-AF from January 2015 to January 2019. Patients were divided into the AKI and non-AKI groups according to the changes in serum creatinine levels during hospitalization. Results Among the 4527 patients, the incidence of AKI was 8.0% (361/4527). Multivariate logistic analysis results indicated that the incidence of in-hospital AKI in patients with AF on admission was 2.6 times higher than that in patients with sinus rhythm (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.77–3.81). Age (per 10-year increase, OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.07–1.38), atrial flutter/atrial tachycardia on admission (OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.12–4.15), diuretics therapy before admission (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.07–2.04) and baseline hemoglobin (per 20 g/L decrease, OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.10–1.32) were independent risk factors for in-hospital AKI. β blockers therapy given before admission (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.51–0.87) and non-warfarin therapy during hospitalization (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.53–0.96) were associated with a decreased risk of in-hospital AKI. After adjustment for confounders, in-hospital AKI was associated with a 34% increase in risk of major adverse cardiovascular (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.02–1.90, p = 0.023). Conclusions Clinicians should pay attention to the monitoring and prevention of in-hospital AKI to improve the prognosis of patients with AF.

This paper aims to establish a direct method for evaluating the internal corrosion in submarine pipelines, including four steps: pre-assessment, indirect inspection, detailed inspection, and post-assessment. The evaluation of corrosion severity and the determination of key monitoring points are particularly important in indirect detection. Taking CO2 gathering and transmission pipeline of an offshore oil field as an example, the overall internal corrosion rate of the pipeline is calculated to be 0.253 mm/a. The 12–45 m long pipeline is selected as the focus of corrosion monitoring. Through the comparative analysis of internal detection data and loss wall thickness, it is found that the results of indirect evaluation and direct evaluation are consistent, indicating the correctness of corrosion rate prediction model and loss wall thickness calculation method. The pipeline reevaluation time is five years. The evaluation method can accurately predict the corrosion status of multiphase flow pipeline and locate the corrosion.

Background: To investigate the gene regulation of tumor cells in the process of different organ metastasis on a xenograft mouse model and screen the genes involved in the organ-target metastasis of tumor cells. Methods: A multi-organ metastasis model was constructed with a human ovarian clear cell carcinoma cell line (ES-2) based on a severe immunodeficiency mouse strain (NCG). Differentially expressed tumor proteins among multi-organ metastases were successfully characterized by microliter liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry, sequence-specific data analysis and multivariate statistical data analysis. Liver metastases were selected as typical for subsequent bioinformatic analysis. Selected liver metastasis-specific genes in ES-2 cells were validated by sequence-specific quantitation including high resolution-multiple reaction monitoring quantification at protein level and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction at mRNA level. Results: From the mass spectrometry data, a total of 4503 human proteins were identified using the sequence-specific data analysis strategy. Of them, 158 proteins were selected as specifically regulated genes in liver metastases for subsequent bioinformatics studies. Based on Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) pathway analysis and sequence-specific quantitation, Ferritin light chain (FTL), lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) and long-chain-fatty-acid–CoA ligase 1 (ACSL1) were finally validated as specifically upregulated proteins in liver metastases. Conclusions: Our work provides a new approach to analyze gene regulation in tumor metastasis in xenograft mouse model. In presence of a large number of mouse protein interference, we validated the up-regulation of human ACSL1, FTL and LDHA in ES-2 liver metastases, which reflects the adaptive regulation of tumor cells to the liver microenvironment through metabolic reprogramming.

Renewable energy technology innovation (RETI) and green industrial structure upgrading (GISU) are crucial pathways for China’s pursuit of sustainable development. Despite the existing research separately emphasizing the importance of RETI and GISU, there are limited investigations into the role of RETI in facilitating the process of GISU, especially in terms of empirical evidence at the urban level. This study utilizes data from 284 cities in China from 2006 to 2020 to investigate the impact of RETI on GISU. Our research findings reveal a positive association between RETI and GISU. Specifically, increasing 1 unit of RETI can promote GISU by 0.19 units. Moreover, we identify that environmental regulations, green finance, and human capital strengthen RETI’s stimulating effect on GISU. Notably, the study highlights that the positive influence of RETI on GISU is especially prominent in economically developed cities with a conducive innovation environment and those facing severe pollution challenges.

Single Snorkel Furnace (SSF) vacuum refining furnace is a novel external refining equipment for high clean steel production. RH is a molten steel refining technology developed by Rheinstahl-Heraeus company. Compared with the traditional RH furnace, the SSF furnace has the advantages of a simple structure, high refining efficiency, and low production cost. However, because the upward flow and the downward flow are in a single snorkel, the flow phenomenon is more complex than that in the RH device. Therefore, the gas–liquid two-phase flow law in SSF furnaces plays an important role in improving equipment efficiency and accurate control. In addition, the evolution and movement behavior of bubbles have an important influence on the two-phase flow. In this study, the Population Balance Model (PBM) model is employed to study the bubble properties, taking into account the effect of bubble coalescence and breakup on the flow field. The simulation results with this model are consistent with the experimental values, and the comparison with the results of the model without the PBM is revealed to be closer with less error. The results show that with the PBM model the flow field is more homogeneously distributed, the flow velocity is more stable, and the area distribution of the upward flow and downward flow in the snorkel is more symmetrical. In the case of this study, as the fluid level rises, the bubble diameter will increase due to the decrease in hydrostatic pressure.

Abstract Background The discrepancy between glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in clinical practice may be related to factors such as acute stress, renal dysfunction, and anemia, and its relationship with in-hospital outcomes is uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the type of discrepancy between HbA1c and FPG and in-hospital outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and diabetes. Methods The Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China - Acute Coronary Syndrome (CCC-ACS) project is a national, hospital-based quality improvement project with an ongoing database. In this work, the Ni/Ti/Al/Cu composite was produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) technology at room temperature. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the composite in the ARB process were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-hardness and tensile tests. The results showed that a uniform microstructure of the Ni/Ti/Al/Cu composite could be produced by an eight passes ARB process, and no intermetallics were generated at the interfaces. As the ARB pass increased, the thickness of the layers decreased, and the average thickness of Cu layers was 8.5 μm after eight passes. In the ARB process, the average micro-hardness of Ni, Ti, Al, Cu improved from 157.9, 161.3, 23.8, 59.3 HV to 284.3, 254.4, 60.4, 162.2 HV, respectively. Moreover, the micro-hardness was linearly related to the actual equivalent strain. The tensile strength of the composites increased, but the elongation decreased in the ARB process. After eight passes, the tensile strength reached the maximum, which was 298.2 MPa.

Abstract Background Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and a major cause of cancer-related death. This study aims to determine whether genetic variations in MIR155HG could be associated with gastric cancer risk. Materials & methods A total of 506 gastric cancer patients and 500 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Genotypes were examined with the MassARRAY platform and data management and analysis were conducted with the Typer Software. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with logistic regression adjusting for age and gender to evaluate the associations between SNPs with gastric cancer in genetic model analysis. Results The “CC” genotype of rs4143370 decreased the risk of gastric cancer in genotype model (p = 0.020) and recessive model (p = 0.018). Inversely, the “CC” genotype of rs1893650 increased the risk of gastric cancer in genotype model (p = 0.023) and recessive model (p = 0.014). Stratified analysis showed that rs11911469 was associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer only among the male group in the dominant model (p = 0.039) and additive model (p = 0.030). The haplotype analysis showed a strong linkage disequilibrium among these six SNPs (rs4143370, rs77699734, rs11911469, rs1893650, rs34904192 and rs928883). Conclusion This study confirmed the relationship between SNPs of MIR155HG and the gastric cancer risk among the Chinese Han population. Our data may provide a new perspective to understand the aetiology of gastric cancer.

Abstract Background The current standard treatment of neonates with intestinal perforation is surgery. However, the mortality rate after surgical treatment for intestinal perforation is very high for very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) neonates. In this review, conservative treatment of pneumoperitoneum among VLBW and ELBW neonates is investigated. Methods Between January 2015 and December 2017, data from all of the VLBW and ELBW neonates with pneumoperitoneum who survived without surgical treatment were collected from Shenzhen Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital in Guangdong, China. Twenty-two neonates with birth weight less than 1500 g were diagnosed with pneumoperitoneum. Following careful evaluation and discussion, eleven were treated conservatively and this was successful in eight. Details of the eight neonates including birth weight, gestational age, gender, risk factors, time of the perforation, treatment and prognosis were retrospectively recorded. A literature review was performed of previously reported cases that had used conservative treatment. Results The median gestational age and birth weight of the eight neonates were 27+ 1 weeks (range 24w+ 3 to 31w+ 6) and 855 g (range 650 g to 1440 g), respectively. Pneumoperitoneum was confirmed by X-ray in all at a median of 8 days of life. They received full parenteral support for a median of 22 days. All eight neonates received a combination of piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem as first-choice antibiotics, two of them also received fluconazole as anti-fungal medication. Median duration of hospitalisation was 80 days. Conclusions Conservative treatment with careful surveillance may be a practical choice for the VLBW and ELBW neonates with intestinal perforation. Further studies are needed for confirmation.

Abstract Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major complication of acute myocardial infarction(AMI), which can significantly increase mortality. This study is to analyze the related risk factors and establish a prediction score of acute kidney injury in order to take early measurement for prevention. Methods The medical records of 6014 hospitalized patients with AMI in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from January 2010 to December 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were randomly assigned into two cohorts: one was for the derivation of prediction score (n = 4252) and another for validation (n = 1762). The criterion for AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine of ≥ 0.3 mg/dL or ≥ 50% from baseline within 48 h. On the basis of odds ratio obtained from multivariate logistic regression analysis, a prediction score of acute kidney injury after AMI was built up. Results In this prediction score, risk score 1 point included hypertension history, heart rate > 100 bpm on admission, peak serum troponin I ≥ 100 μg/L, and time from admission to coronary reperfusion > 120 min; risks score 2 points included Killip classification ≥ class 3 on admission; and maximum dosage of intravenous furosemide ≥ 60 mg/d; risks score 3 points only included shock during hospitalization. In addition, when baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was less than 90 ml/min·1.73 m2, every 10 ml/min·1.73 m2 reduction of eGFR increased risk score 1 point. Youden index showed that the best cut-off value for prediction of AKI was 3 points with a sensitivity of 71.1% and specificity 74.2%. The datasets of derivation and validation both displayed adequate discrimination (an area under the ROC curve, 0.79 and 0.81, respectively) and satisfactory calibration (Hosmer–Lemeshow statistic test, P = 0.63 and P = 0.60, respectively). Conclusions In conclusion, a prediction score for AKI secondary to AMI in Chinese patients was established, which may help to prevent AKI early.

Gabion has been extensively used in retaining walls and slope protection. This study carries out a safety risk analysis of a new structure combining basalt fiber reinforcement (BFR) and the traditional gabion structure. The micro-parameters of BFR and soil were calibrated by using the 3D discrete element method after the tensile test of BFR was completed. The mechanical property of the gabion unit was investigated by using a refined model and a numerical test of uniaxial compression. This work developed a simplified method to simulate the seepage effect. The stress condition and sliding displacement between gabions were also investigated. Deformation, stress, and porosity were all used to evaluate the stability of the new type of gabion slope. According to this study, BFR has a tensile strength of 68.22 MPa, and the safety factor increased by 25.68% after using these BFR gabions. The damage is mainly manifested by bending the BFRs and the dislocation of the gabion units, as the slope does not slip. It is indicated this novel gabion structure has a lower safety risk compared to traditional ones, and thus can be popularized and used in retaining walls and slope protection.

A high-throughput layered decoder for quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is required for communication systems. The preferred way to improve the throughput is to insert pipeline stages and increase the operating frequency, which suffers from pipeline conflicts at the same time. A priority-based layered schedule is proposed to keep the updates of log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) as frequent as possible when pipeline conflicts happen. To reduce pipeline conflicts, we also propose double update queues for layered decoders. The proposed double update queues improve the percentage of updated LLRs per iteration. Benefitting from these, the performance loss of the proposed decoder for the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) is reduced from 0.6 dB to 0.2 dB using the same quantization compared with the state-of-the-art work. As a result, the throughput of the proposed decoder improved up to 2.85 times when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was equal to 5.9 dB.

The polygonal scaled boundary finite element method (PSBFEM) is a novel approach integrating the standard scaled boundary finite element method and the polygonal mesh technique. In this work, a user-defined element (UEL) for dynamic analysis based on the PSBFEM is developed in the general finite element software ABAQUS. We present the main procedures of interacting with Abaqus, updating AMATRX and RHS, defining the UEL element, and solving the stiffness and mass matrices through eigenvalue decomposition. Several benchmark problems of free and forced vibration are solved to validate the proposed implementation. The results show that the PSBFEM is more accurate than the FEM with mesh refinement. Moreover, the PSBFEM avoids the occurrence of hanging nodes by constructing a polygonal mesh. Thus, the PSBFEM can choose an appropriate mesh resolution for different structures ensuring accuracy and reducing calculation costs.

At 2 µm wavelengths (149.9 THz), hollow-core photonics band gap fibers have higher light power damage thresholds, stable polarization states, and lower losses of 0.1 dB/km. Additionally, a thulium-doped fiber amplifier can provide a gain of >35 dB. Specifically, an indium-rich InGaAs photodetector shows a naturally higher photoresponsivity at 2 µm wavelengths than the C-band. Therefore, using tunable photo-generated microwave technology at 2 µm wavelengths could achieve higher photo-to-electric power conversion efficiencies for higher RF output power applications using the same method at the same frequency. Here, a double sideband with the carrier suppression modulation method was experimentally applied on 2 µm wavelengths to generate tunable and stable microwave carriers. Comparison experiments were also applied on the 1.55 µm (193.4 THz)/1.31 µm wavelengths (228.8 THz) based on the same indium-rich InGaAs photodetector. Through normalization on the wavelength-corresponded squared external quantum efficiency to visualize the photo-to-electric power conversion efficiency at different wavelengths under the same input optical signal power, the ratio between the results at 2 µm wavelengths and C/O-band is abstracted as 1.31/1.98, approaching theoretical estimations. This corresponds to a power conversion efficiency increasement of ~1.16 dB/~2.98 dB. To our knowledge, this is the first study on 2 micron wavelengths that proves the corresponding high efficiency power conversion property.

2D layered MXene (Ti3C2Tx) with high conductivity and pseudo-capacitance properties presents great application potential with regard to electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, the self-restacking and agglomeration phenomenon between Ti3C2Tx layers retards ion transfer and limits electrochemical performance improvement. In this study, a 3D porous structure of Ti3C2Tx was obtained by adding alkali to a Ti3C2Tx colloid, which was followed by flocculation. Alkaline-induced flocculation is simple and effective, can be completed within minutes, and provides 3D porous networks. As 3D porous network structures present larger surface areas and more active sites, ions transfer accelerates, which is crucial with regard to the improvement of the superior capacitance and rate performance of electrodes. The sample processed with KOH (K-a-Ti3C2Tx) exhibited a high capacity of approximately 300.2 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1. The capacitance of the samples treated with NaOH and LiOH is low. In addition, annealing is essential to further improve the capacitive performance of Ti3C2Tx. After annealing at 400 °C for 2 h in a vacuum tube furnace, the sample treated with KOH (K-A-Ti3C2Tx) exhibited an excellent specific capacitance of approximately 400.7 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, which is considerably higher than that of pristine Ti3C2Tx (228.2 F g−1). Furthermore, after 5000 charge–discharge cycles, the capacitance retention rate reached 89%. This result can be attributed to annealing, which can further remove unfavourable surface groups, such as –F or –Cl, and then improve conductivity capacitance and rate performance. This study can provide an effective approach to the preparation of high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Human small intestinal crypts are the source of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) that are capable of undergoing self-renewal and differentiation to an epithelial layer. The development of methods to expand the ISCs has provided opportunities to model human intestinal epithelial disorders. Human crypt samples are usually obtained from either endoscopic or discarded surgical samples, and are thereby exposed to warm ischemia, which may impair their in vitro growth as three-dimensional culture as spheroids or enteroids. In this study we compared duodenal samples obtained from discarded surgical samples to those isolated from whole-body preserved cadaveric donors to generate in vitro cultures. We also examined the effect of storage solution (phosphate-buffered saline or University of Wisconsin [UW] solution) as well as multiple storage times on crypt isolation and growth in culture. We found that intestinal crypts were successfully isolated from cadaveric tissue stored for up to 144 h post-procurement and also were able to generate enteroids and spheroids in certain media conditions. Surgical samples stored in UW after procurement were sufficiently viable up to 24 h and also allowed the generation of enteroids and spheroids. We conclude that surgical samples stored for up to 24 h post-procurement in UW solution allowed for delayed crypt isolation and viable in vitro cultures. Furthermore, in situ, hypothermic preservation in cadaveric duodenal samples permitted crypt/ISC isolation, and successful culture of spheroids and enteroids from tissues held for up to 6 days post-procurement.

The Al-Nb/Ti/Ni composite was fabricated from pure Al, Ni, Ti, and Nb sheets by the ARB technology. The microstructure evolution was observed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The evolution was evaluated by the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique. A couple of results we obtained showed that the microstructure of Al changed from equiaxed grains to a lamellar structure, and the grain size in the ND decreased gradually. Finally, the average grain size in the ND was 0.31 μm. Additionally, the fraction of HAGBs increased after the third pass, resulting from the dynamic recovery and the shear bands. The texture evolution was tested by electron backscattered diffraction. After the fourth pass, the Al exhibited a combination texture of rolling texture and shear texture. The rolling texture components were composed of Copper{112}, Dillamore{4 4 11}, S{123}, and Brass{011}, and the shear texture components were Rotated Cube {001} and {111}//ND. The microhardness of Ni, Ti, Nb, and Al was improved in the ARB process and finally reached 226.4, 246.3, 187.2, and 44.2 HV, respectively.

Shrimp aquaculture environments are a natural reservoir of multiple antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) due to the overuse of antibiotics. Nowadays, the prevalence of these kinds of emerging contaminants in shrimp aquaculture environments is still unclear. In this study, high-throughput sequencing techniques were used to analyze the distribution of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), bacterial communities, and their correlations in water and sediment samples in two types of typical shrimp (Procambarus clarkii and Macrobrachium rosenbergii) freshwater aquaculture environments. A total of 318 ARG subtypes within 19 ARG types were detected in all the samples. The biodiversity and relative abundance of ARGs in sediment samples showed much higher levels compared to water samples from all ponds in the study area. Bacitracin (17.44–82.82%) and multidrug (8.57–49.70%) were dominant ARG types in P. clarkii ponds, while sulfonamide (26.33–39.59%) and bacitracin (12.75–37.11%) were dominant ARG types in M. rosenbergii ponds. Network analysis underlined the complex co-occurrence patterns between bacterial communities and ARGs. Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Actinobacteria exhibited a high abundance in all samples, in which C39 (OTU25355) and Hydrogenophaga (OTU162961) played important roles in the dissemination of and variation in ARGs based on their strong connections between ARGs and bacterial communities. Furthermore, pathogens (e.g., Aeromonadaceae (OTU195200) and Microbacteriaceae (OTU16033)), which were potential hosts for various ARGs, may accelerate the propagation of ARGs and be harmful to human health via horizontal gene transfer mediated by MGEs. Variation partitioning analysis further confirmed that MGEs were the most crucial contributor (74.76%) driving the resistome alteration. This study may help us to understand the non-ignorable correlations among ARGs, bacterial diversity, and MGEs in the shrimp freshwater aquaculture environments.

Tungsten-copper (W–Cu) composites are widely used as electrical contact materials, resistance welding, electrical discharge machining (EDM), and plasma electrode materials due to their excellent arc erosion resistance, fusion welding resistance, high strength, and superior hardness. However, the traditional preparation methods pay little attention to the compactness and microstructural uniformity of W–Cu composites. Herein, W–Cu composite coatings are prepared by pulse electroplating using nano-W powder as raw material and the influence of forward-reverse duty cycle of pulse current on the structure and mechanical properties is systematically investigated. Moreover, the densification mechanism of the W–Cu composite coating is analyzed from the viewpoints of forward-pulse plating and reverse-pulse plating. At the current density (J) of 2 A/dm2, frequency (f) of 1500 Hz, forward duty cycle (df) of 40% and reverse duty cycle (dr) of 10%, the W–Cu composite coating rendered a uniform microstructure and compact structure, resulting in a hardness of 127 HV and electrical conductivity of 53.7 MS/m.

Compact spherical WC-12Co composite powder was deposited on 304 stainless steel substrate by multi-layer laser powder deposition (LPD) to fabricate cemented carbide coating. The phase constitution and microstructure of the coating as well as the feedstock powder were characterized. Microhardness and dry sliding wear tests were also performed to assess the mechanical properties of the coating. The results showed that the coating exhibited distinct microstructures and phase constitutions at different depths due to the various thermal cycles and the resulting heat damages of feedstock powders. The upper region of the coating (i.e. the wear resistant layer) exhibited bimodal microstructure in which the incompletely dissolved WC-Co composite particles preserved the original submicron sintered structure and secondary carbides were precipitated around them. Owing to the fine-grained strengthening of submicron WC grains in the undissolved areas, the microhardness of wear resistant layer was enhanced to 8 times that of the substrate. The wear rate of the cemented carbide coating was about three orders of magnitude lower than that of the substrate when dry sliding against Al _2 O _3 ball under 10 N normal load. The bimodal structure of the wear resistant layer and the synergistic enhancement of differently sized carbides are the key factors for the excellent wear resistance of the coating.

In the present study, high-purity ternary-phase nitride (Ti2AlN) powders were synthesized through microwave sintering using TiH2, Al, and TiN powders as raw materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were adopted to characterize the as-prepared powders. It was found that the Ti2AlN powder prepared by the microwave sintering of the 1TiH2/1.15Al/1TiN mixture at 1250 °C for 30 min manifested great purity (96.68%) with uniform grain size distribution. The formation mechanism of Ti2AlN occurred in four stages. The solid-phase reaction of Ti/Al and Ti/TiN took place below the melting point of aluminum and formed Ti2Al and TiN0.5 phases, which were the main intermediates in Ti2AlN formation. Therefore, the present work puts forward a favorable method for the preparation of high-purity Ti2AlN powders.
