Abstract

A study of superconducting magnets utilized for magnetically levitated (Maglev) transportation systems is presented. The results indicate the importance of accurate vibration analysis in the development of superconducting magnets that will help minimize mechanical loss for Maglev train operations. The development of an on-board refrigeration system for superconducting magnets that does not require supplies of either liquid nitrogen or liquid helium is ongoing.

12. Synthesis, crystallographic characterization and homogeneous catalytic activity of novel unsymmetric porphyrins

Abstract

Unsymmetric porphyrins, containing both pentafluorophenyl (PFP= A) and 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl (DMP= B) substituents at the mesopositions, were prepared using Lindsey’s methodology. The isomeric trans-A2B2(P1)and cis-A2B2(P2) porphyrins together with the tris(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin A3B (P3) were isolated using chromatography. The porphyrins were characterized by UV-VIS, 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis (C,H,N), cyclic voltammetry (CV)and their molecular structures confirmed by single crystal XRD. Their manganese complexes, MnP1, MnP2 and MnP3, were also synthesised and used as catalysts in cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions under homogeneous conditions. The catalytic studies were supported by electrochemical measurements and showed that the number of electron-withdrawing substituents on the porphyrins rings influences the catalytic activity. These porphyrins may be used as precursors for the design of new materials, such as Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs)

Abstract

Metalloporphyrins are exceedingly useful building blocks for the design and synthesis of molecularly based solids. The use of hydrogen bonding or metal ion coordination provides a wide range of framework solids. Using various polyfunctionalized porphyrins, we have created porous solids that are thermally robust and that retain their internal porosity upon loss of solvates. Their pore dimensions are comparable to zeolites, and they show shape and size selectivity in sorption of guest molecules and in epoxidation of alkenes.

Abstract

This review presents studies on methyl coenzyme M reductase, the biological system Factor 430 (F430) and the use of nickel(II) complexes as structural and functional models. The ability of F430 and nickel(II) macrocycle complexes to mediate the reductive dehalogenation of cyclohexyl halogens and the CH3-S bond cleavage of methyl CoM (by sodium borohydride and some intermediate species) proposed for the catalytic cycle of the biological system F430 was reviewed. The importance of the structure of the nickel complexes and the condition of the catalytic reduction reaction are also discussed.

50. ZnO with Different Morphologies Sensitized by Metalloporphyrins as Catalysts for H 2 Production by Water Splitting Under Sunlight.

Abstract

In this work, zinc oxide with different morphologies and textural properties were prepared and sensitized with metalloporphyrins (MPs) aiming to improve its solar energy harvesting capability for H 2 production by water splitting under sunlight (a 300 W Xe/Hg lamp). An anionic iron(III)porphyrin and a cationic manganese(III)porphyrin were immobilized on different ZnO solids predominantly by electrostatic interactions. In general, the prepared MP-free ZnO solid yielded modest catalytic results which had apparently no direct correlation with their textural properties or morphology. On the other hand, when these ZnO solids had iron or manganese porphyrin sensitizing them, their catalytic performances changed and a superior yield towards H 2 production was observed in comparison to the pure ZnO solids, making evident the synergy achieved between these two components (ZnO and metalloporphyrins) for the prepared solids. It was also observed that the metalloporphyrins and the respective free-base ligand suffered redox reactions when used as homogenous catalyst in this reaction, which could influence their performances as catalysts. The same was not observed in the solids containing immobilized MP, suggesting some protective effect of the ZnO solids on the MP complexes upon immobilization probably due to interaction of the complexes with the ZnO matrix., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
