Abstract Next-generation light-emitting applications such as displays and optical communications require judicious control over emitted light, including intensity and angular dispersion. To date, this remains a challenge as conventional methods require cumbersome optics. Here, we report highly directional and enhanced electroluminescence from a solution-processed quasi-2-dimensional halide perovskite light-emitting diode by building a device architecture to exploit hybrid plasmonic-photonic Tamm plasmon modes. By exploiting the processing and bandgap tunability of the halide perovskite device layers, we construct the device stack to optimise both optical and charge-injection properties, leading to narrow forward electroluminescence with an angular full-width half-maximum of 36.6° compared with the conventional isotropic control device of 143.9°, and narrow electroluminescence spectral full-width half-maximum of 12.1 nm. The device design is versatile and tunable to work with emission lines covering the visible spectrum with desired directionality, thus providing a promising route to modular, inexpensive, and directional operating light-emitting devices.

Energy security and international competitiveness are two of the most fiercely discussed topics – especially in the light of the European Union (EU)’s dependence on Russia’s gas, oil, and coal. Both mentioned concepts are of special importance for the so-called EU new member states (EU NMS), which are undergoing the energy diversification process. The main goal of this paper is to analyze how energy security influences the international competitiveness of these countries. The study uses trade theories related to productivity differentials (Ricardian hypothesis) and differences in factor endowments (Heckscher–Ohlin hypothesis) as a basis for our econometric modeling. The results show that relative energy supply as well as physical and human capital relative endowments have a statistically significant impact on international competitiveness of the studied economies.

Summary: Animal cells undergo repeated shape changes, for example by rounding up and respreading as they divide. Cell rounding can be also observed in interphase cells, for example when cancer cells switch from a mesenchymal to an ameboid mode of cell migration. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how interphase cells round up. In this article, we demonstrate that a partial loss of substrate adhesion triggers actomyosin-dependent cortical remodeling and ERM activation, which facilitates further adhesion loss causing cells to round. Although the path of rounding in this case superficially resembles mitotic rounding in involving ERM phosphorylation, retraction fiber formation, and cortical remodeling downstream of ROCK, it does not require Ect2. This work provides insights into the way partial loss of adhesion actives cortical remodeling to drive cell detachment from the substrate. This is important to consider when studying the mechanics of cells in suspension, for example using methods like real-time deformability cytometry (RT-DC).

Background Ovarian cancer is one of the most common and worst gynecological cancers. According to statistics, ovarian cancer ranks fifth among deaths from all cancer deaths in the female population in Poland. The low effectiveness of treatment is the reason for the constant search for new therapeutic solutions. Research results suggest a relationship between cancer development and chronic inflammation. A substance with well-defined anti-inflammatory therapeutic activity that can be used in research in other indications (oncology) is Budesonidum. Aim of the study The aim of the study was to evaluate the antitumor activity of Budesonidum in ovarian cancer cells. The research was carried out on the basis of the inhaled formulation of Budesonidum and in vitro using well-characterized ovarian cancer cell lines. Materials and methods The studies were carried out with the use of ovarian cancer cells of different type - adherent (Caov-3) and non-adherent (NIH: OVCAR-3). The effect of Budesonidum on cells of selected lines: cancerous and normal CCD-1064Sk (skin fibroblasts) in vitro was assessed. The cytotoxic activity of the drug on the cells was assessed on the basis of the cell survival results obtained by the MTT assay, IC50 calculations and photographic documentation of the cells by light microscopy. A wide range of Budesonidum concentrations from 2.32 µM to 232.27 µM was used. Results As a result of the research, it has been shown that Budesonidum has antitumor activity. The incubation of cells with the drug resulted in decreased cell viability. There was a correlation between the increase in the dose and the decrease in survival. It was estimated that the IC50 is higher for adherent cells (normal fibroblasts and Caov-3 ovarian cancer cells). Ovarian cancer cells of the adherent type have been shown to be the most resistant to Budesonidum. Ovarian cancer non-adherent cells (NIH: OVCAR-3) showed a higher sensitivity to Budesonidum. Conclusions Budesonidum shows antitumor activity against ovarian cancer cells. Ovarian cancer non-adherent cells (NIH: OVCAR-3), originally derived from the peritoneal exudate of patients, show high sensitivity to Budesonidum.

Abstract Background Recent multicenter studies identified COVID-19 as a risk factor for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). However, no large multicenter study has compared the incidence of IPA between COVID-19 and influenza patients. Objectives To determine the incidence of putative IPA in critically ill SARS-CoV-2 patients, compared with influenza patients. Methods This study was a planned ancillary analysis of the coVAPid multicenter retrospective European cohort. Consecutive adult patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation for > 48 h for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia or influenza pneumonia were included. The 28-day cumulative incidence of putative IPA, based on Blot definition, was the primary outcome. IPA incidence was estimated using the Kalbfleisch and Prentice method, considering extubation (dead or alive) within 28 days as competing event. Results A total of 1047 patients were included (566 in the SARS-CoV-2 group and 481 in the influenza group). The incidence of putative IPA was lower in SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia group (14, 2.5%) than in influenza pneumonia group (29, 6%), adjusted cause-specific hazard ratio (cHR) 3.29 (95% CI 1.53–7.02, p = 0.0006). We performed an observational study to investigate intensive care unit incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of coronavirus disease–associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). We found 10%–15% CAPA incidence among 823 patients in 2 cohorts. Several factors were independently associated with CAPA in 1 cohort and mortality rates were 43%–52%.

We report a septicemia and disseminated candidiasis due to delayed gastrointestinal mucosae repair in a patient treated with tocilizumab after anti-CD19 CAR T-cell therapy. Tocilizumab could have inhibited intestinal tissue repair and furthered bacteria translocation leading to the invasion of intestinal mucosa by yeasts as IL-6 is known to be involved in mucosal wound healing.

Abstract Background The toxicity of released metallic particles generated in metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) using cobalt chromium (CoCr) has raised concerns regarding their safety amongst both surgeons and the public. Soft tissue changes such as pseudotumours and metallosis have been widely observed following the use of these implants, which release metallic by-products due to both wear and corrosion. Although activated fibroblasts, the dominant cell type in soft tissues, have been linked to many diseases, the role of synovial fibroblasts in the adverse reactions caused by CoCr implants remains unknown. To investigate the influence of implants manufactured from CoCr, the periprosthetic synovial tissues and synovial fibroblasts from patients with failed MoM THA, undergoing a revision operation, were analysed and compared with samples from patients undergoing a primary hip replacement, in order to elucidate histological and cellular changes. Results Periprosthetic tissue from patients with MoM implants was characterized by marked fibrotic changes, notably an increase in collagen content from less than 20% to 45–55%, an increase in α-smooth muscle actin positive cells from 4 to 9% as well as immune cells infiltration. Primary cell culture results demonstrated that MoM synovial fibroblasts have a decreased apoptosis rate from 14 to 6% compared to control synovial fibroblasts. In addition, synovial fibroblasts from MoM patients retained higher contractility and increased responsiveness to chemotaxis in matrix contraction. Their mechanical properties at a single cell level increased as observed by a 60% increase in contraction force and higher cell stiffness (3.3 kPa in MoM vs 2.18 kPa in control), as measured by traction force microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Further, fibroblasts from MoM patients promoted immune cell invasion by secreting monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1, CCL2) and induced monocyte differentiation, which could also be associated with excess accumulation of synovial macrophages. Conclusion Synovial fibroblasts exposed in vivo to MoM THA implants that release CoCr wear debris displayed dramatic phenotypic alteration and functional changes. These findings unravelled an unexpected effect of the CoCr alloy and demonstrated an important role of synovial fibroblasts in the undesired tissue reactions caused by MoM THAs.

In this work, we present the results of the analysis performed with near edge absorption fine structure spectroscopy of barium edges in a B+BaF2 optical filter. The radiation was generated by a laser-plasma soft X-ray source based on a double-stream gas puff target. The use of a flat-field spectrometer based on a diffraction grating allowed us to collect the absorption spectra of the radiation transmitted by the analyzed optical filter. Even though there is no common energy policy, EU energy strategy sets the background of the energy landscape in Europe. EU energy policy responds to different challenges in the energy market. One of them is climate change. Growing emissions of greenhouse gases aroused world's interest aimed at reducing the harmful impact of the energy industry on the environment. The European Union has undertaken a low-emission strategy set out in the package called “3x20”. The aim of the study is on one hand to present program measures and regulations taken in the EU in the recent period for sustainable energy management and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and on the other try to assess program’s implementation by Member States. The article presents the current state in terms of achieving the objectives of the “3x20” package in 2017, with a special diagnosis of conditions and trends in the Central and Eastern Europe countries that joined the EU after 2004.Paper includes the analysis of the official EU documents within energy policy and empirical evidence on their implementation. The analysis uses the literature review and data from the Passport, Eurostat and OECD databases. Methods employed in this study include critical literature review and secondary data analysis.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a very promising analytical technique for the detection and identification of trace amounts of analytes. Among the many substrates used in SERS of great interest are nanostructures fabricated using physical methods, such as semicontinuous metal films obtained via electron beam physical vapor deposition. In these studies, we investigate the influence of morphology of semicontinuous silver films on their SERS properties. The morphologies studied ranged from isolated particles through percolated films to almost continuous films. We found that films below the percolation threshold (transition from dielectric-like to metal-like) made of isolated silver structures provided the largest SERS enhancement of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) analyte signals. The substrate closest to the percolation threshold has the SERS signal about four times lower than the highest signal sample.

Many studies report the adverse responses to metal-on-metal (MoM) hip prostheses, with tissues surrounding failed MoM hip prostheses revealing abundant tissue necrosis and fibrosis. These local effects appear to be initiated by metal ions released from the prosthesis causing the secretion of inflammatory mediators. However, little is known about the effect of the metal ions on tissue remodelling and pseudotumor formation, which are also associated with the failure of MoM hip prostheses. The peri-prosthetic soft tissue masses can lead to pain, swelling, limited range of joint movement and extensive tissue lesion. To elucidate this cellular response, a multidisciplinary approach using both two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) in vitro culture systems was employed to study the effects of Co2+ and Cr3+ on human fibroblast activation and mechanobiology. Co2+ induced a fibrotic response, characterised by cytoskeletal remodelling and enhanced collagen matrix contraction. This was associated with increased cell stiffness and contractile forces as measured by atomic force microscopy and traction force microscopy, respectively. These effects were triggered by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, this fibrotic response was enhanced in the presence of macrophages, which increased the prevalence of a-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA)-positive fibroblasts and collagen synthesis. Cr3+ did not show any significant effect on fibroblast activation. Co2+ promoted matrix remodelling by fibroblasts that was further enhanced by macrophage signalling. Use of alternative implant materials or manipulation of this fibrotic response could provide an opportunity for enhancing the success of prostheses utilising CoCr alloys.

International competitiveness and energy security are important topics on the energy policy agenda of energy-exporting and -importing nations. High dependence on energy rents challenges exporters’ economies and influences their ability to compete on international markets. The goal of this study is to investigate how energy demand security affects the international competitiveness of developed energy exporters. This research employs an econometric approach aimed at modeling the Heckscher–Ohlin and Ricardo international trade hypotheses. Introduced modifications allow for the measurement of international competitiveness on a country level, not per industry, and includes a series of energy variables in addition to relative resource endowment and productivity differentials. This study (based on Norway, the Netherlands, Canada and the USA over the period of 1997–2017) proves that energy security does not play a role in the shaping of international competitiveness of high-income energy-exporting countries.

Pazopanib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat renal cell carcinoma. Few in vitro studies investigate its effects towards cancer cells or endothelial cells in the presence of cancer. We tested the effect of Pazopanib on renal cell carcinoma cells (CAKI-2,786-O) in two-dimensional and three-dimensional tumouroids made of dense extracellular matrix, treated in normoxia and hypoxia. Finally, we engineered complex tumouroids with a stromal compartment containing fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Simple CAKI-2 tumouroids were more resistant to Pazopanib than 786-O tumouroids. Under hypoxia, while the more ‘resistant’ CAKI-2 tumouroids showed no decrease in viability, 786-O tumouroids required higher Pazopanib concentrations to induce cell death. Celem opracowania jest ocena wydobycia gazu łupkowego i jego oddziaływania na bezpieczeństwo energetyczne USA w latach 2007-2015. Analiza obejmuje lata 2007-2015, natomiast zjawisko tam, gdzie to możliwe, pokazane jest w szerszym horyzoncie czasowym: 1970-2040, przy czym do 2016 roku ma ona charakter historyczny, zaś od 2017 – prognostyczny. Źródłem danych były amerykańska Energy Information Administration oraz bazy danych uznanych organizacji międzynarodowych (Bank Światowy) czy branżowych (BP). Z przeprowadzonej oceny bezpieczeństwa energetycznego USA wynika, że bezpieczeństwo energetyczne USA w okresie 2007-2015 znacząco poprawiło się. Podobny trend widać na przestrzeni lat 1970-2040 z wyjątkiem okresów kryzysów naftowych lat siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych XX wieku oraz gwałtownego wzrostu cen ropy w pierwszej dekadzie nowego stulecia. Rok 2016 jest również jednym z punktów szeregu czasowego dla USA, w którym zanotowano jeden z najniższych poziomów wskaźnika, co oznacza jedną z najwyższych ocen bezpieczeństwa energetycznego tego kraju. Niewątpliwie jednym z czynników, które istotnie wpłynęły na ten fakt jest wydobycie gazu z łupków w USA. Produkcja tego węglowodoru niekonwencjonalnego poza samym zwiększeniem podaży na rynku krajowym ma również istotny wymiar w skali światowej. W opracowaniu podejmuje się problematykę relatywnie nową zarówno z punktu widzenia horyzontu czasowego badań, jak i jej znaczenia w badaniach ekonomicznych.

A near 1-keV photons from the Xe/He plasma produced by the interaction of laser beam with a double stream gas puff target were employed for studies of L absorption edges of period 4 transitional metals with atomic number Z from 26 to 30. The dual-channel, compact NEXAFS system was employed for the acquisition of the absorption spectra. L1–3 absorption edges of the samples were identified in transmission mode using broadband emission from the Xe/He plasma to show the applicability of such source and measurement system to the NEXAFS studies of the transition metals, including magnetic materials.

Narrow band-gap semiconductors, namely ternary InAsSb alloys, find substantial technological importance for mid-infrared application as photodetectors in medical diagnostics or environmental monitoring. Thus, it is crucial to develop electrical contacts for these materials because they are the fundamental blocks of all semiconductor devices. This study demonstrates that electroplated gold contacts can be considered as a simple and reliable metallization technology for the electrical-response examination of a test structure. Unalloyed electroplated Au contacts to InAsSb exhibit specific contact resistivity even lower than vacuum-deposited standard Ti–Au. Moreover, temperature-dependent transport properties, such as Hall carrier concentration and mobility, show similar trends, with a minor shift in the transition temperature. It can be associated with a difference in metallization technology, mainly the presence of a Ti interlayer in vacuum-deposited contacts. Such a transition may give insight into not only the gentle balance changes between conductivity channels but also an impression of changing the dominance of carrier type from p- to n-type. The magnetotransport experiments assisted with mobility spectrum analysis clearly show that such an interpretation is incorrect. InAsSb layers are strongly p-type dominant, with a clear contribution from valence band carriers observed at the whole analyzed temperature range. Furthermore, the presence of thermally activated band electrons is detected at temperatures higher than 220 K.

Two highly efficient commercial organic photosensitizers—azure A (AA) and 5-(4-aminophenyl)-10,15,20-(triphenyl)porphyrin (APTPP)—were covalently attached to the glass surface to form a photoactive monolayer. The proposed straightforward strategy consists of three steps, i.e., the initial chemical grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) followed by two chemical postmodification steps. The chemical structure of the resulting mixed monolayer (MIX_TC_APTES@glass) was widely characterized by X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Raman spectroscopies, while its photoactive properties were investigated in situ by UV–Vis spectroscopy with α-terpinene as a chemical trap. It was shown that both photosensitizers retain their activity toward light-activated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) after immobilization on the glassy surface and that the resulting nanolayer shows high stability. Thanks to the complementarity of the spectral properties of AA and APTPP, the effectiveness of the ROS photogeneration under broadband illumination can be optimized. The reported light-activated nanocoating demonstrated promising antimicrobial activity toward Escherichia coli (E. coli), by reducing the number of adhered bacteria compared to the unmodified glass surface.

Objective: The objective of this paper is to investigate the link between energy security and international competitiveness captured by export. Research Design & Methods: To fulfil the goal, we employed the panel data linear regression model with fixed effects. The study includes 23 countries denoted by one of the world’s biggest energy consumption levels between 1995 and 2014. Findings: The study confirms the existence of the relationship between energy security and export in the defined and examined groups of goods. Energy security influences exports of capital goods most. While the environmental and economic aspects of energy security gain importance in all tested categories of goods, energy imports lose it. Implications & Recommendations: The research results suggest that the energy security concept is not a coherent phenomenon as the environmental aspect had the greatest influence on international competitiveness. Such a result calls for a broader empirical investigation with a greater sample size divided upon GDP performance. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in studying the link between energy security and international competitiveness from the export perspective. The identified research gap in this area shows a relative lack of theoretical and empirical studies.

The COVID-19 pandemic storm has struck the world economies and energy markets with extreme strength. The goal of our study is to assess how the pandemic has influenced oil and gas prices, using energy market reactions in the United States and Japan. To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 cases on the crude oil and natural gas markets, we applied the Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) approach to the number of the US and Japanese COVID-19 cases and energy prices. Our study period is from 21 January 2020 to 2 June 2020, and uses the latest data available at the time of model calibration and captures the so-called “first pandemic wave”. In the US, the COVID-19 pandemic had a statistically negative impact on the crude oil price while it positively affected the gas price. In Japan, this negative impact was only apparent in the crude oil market with a two-day lag. Possible explanations of the results may include differences in pandemic development in the US and Japan, and the diverse roles both countries have in energy markets.

Innovation determines the competitiveness of companies and countries. Innovative products and processes have revolutionized the world economy, and are particularly important in the energy industry. Demand for energy innovation originates from resource scarcity, a surge in energy consumption and stringent environmental regulations. The objective of this paper is to examine the application of selected energy-related innovations in Poland. The analysis is based on the database of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Our analysis covers the period 2009–2014, as extended by limited data availability. From it, we conclude that Poland performed well in selected energy-related innovations. This study extends knowledge concerning the link between energy efficiency/renewables and innovation.

The Turkevich synthesis method of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) was adopted for direct fabrication of SiO2@Au and TiO2@Au core-shell nanostructures. In this method, chloroauric acid was reduced with trisodium citrate in the presence of amine-functionalized silica or titania submicroparticles. Core-shells obtained in this way were compared to structures fabricated by mixing of Turkevich AuNPs with amine-functionalized silica or titania submicroparticles. It was found that by modification of reaction conditions of the first method, such as temperature and concentration of reagents, control over gold coverage on silicon dioxide particles has been achieved. Described method under certain conditions allows fabrication of semicontinuous gold films on the surface of silicon dioxide particles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing use of Turkevich method to direct fabrication of TiO2@Au core-shell nanostructures.

Semiconducting polymers are promising materials for photocatalysis, batteries, fuel applications, etc. One of the most useful photocatalysts is polymeric carbon nitride (PCN), which is usually produced during melamine condensation. In this work, a novel method of obtaining a PCN nanocomposite, in which PCN forms an amorphous layer coating on oxide nanoparticles, is presented. Microwave hydrothermal synthesis (MHS) was used to synthesize a homogeneous mixture of nanoparticles consisting of 80 wt.% AlOOH and 20 wt.% of ZrO2. The nanopowders were mechanically milled with melamine, and the mixture was annealed in the temperature range of 400–600 °C with rapid heating and cooling. The above procedure lowers PCN formation to 400 °C. The following nanocomposite properties were investigated: band gap, specific surface area, particle size, morphology, phase composition, chemical composition, and photocatalytic activity. The specific surface of the PCN nanocomposite was as high as 70 m2/g, and the optical band gap was 3 eV. High photocatalytic activity in phenol degradation was observed. The proposed simple method, as well as the low-cost preparation procedure, permits the exploitation of PCN as a polymer semiconductor photocatalytic material.

To use the full potential of composite parts, e.g., to reduce the structural weight of cars or airplanes, a greater focus is needed on the joining technology. Adhesive bonding is considered favorable, superior joining technology for these parts. Unfortunately, to provide a structural and durable bond, a surface pre-treatment is necessary. Due to its high integration potential in industrial process chains, laser radiation can be a very efficient tool for this purpose. Within the BMBF-funded (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) project GEWOL, a laser source that emits radiation at 3 µm wavelength (which shows significant advantages in theory) was developed for a sensitive laser-based bonding pre-treatment. Within the presented study, the developed laser source was compared with conventional laser sources emitting radiation at 355 nm, 1064 nm, and 10,600 nm in terms of application for a composite bonding pre-treatment. With the different laser sources, composites were treated, analytically tested, subsequently bonded, and mechanically tested to determine the bonding ability of the treated specimens. The results show a sensitive treatment of the surface with the developed laser source, which resulted in a very effective cleaning, high bonding strengths (over 32 MPa), and a good effectiveness compared with the conventional laser sources.

Influenza-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (IAPA) and COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) affect about 15% of critically ill patients with influenza or COVID-19, respectively. These viral–fungal coinfections are difficult to diagnose and are associated with increased mortality, but data on their pathophysiology are scarce. We aimed to explore the role of lung epithelial and myeloid innate immunity in patients with IAPA or CAPA. In this observational study, we retrospectively recruited patients who had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium, requiring non-invasive or invasive ventilation because of severe influenza or COVID-19, with or without aspergillosis, between Jan 1, 2011, and March 31, 2021, whose bronchoalveolar lavage samples were available at the hospital biobank. Additionally, biobanked in vivo tracheobronchial biopsy samples from patients with IAPA or CAPA and invasive Aspergillus tracheobronchitis admitted to ICUs requiring invasive ventilation between the same dates were collected from University Hospitals Leuven, Hospital Network Antwerp (Belgium), and Amiens-Picardie University Hospital (France). We did nCounter gene expression analysis of 755 genes linked to myeloid innate immunity and protein analysis of 47 cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors on the bronchoalveolar lavage samples. Gene expression data were used to infer cell fractions by use of CIBERSORTx, to perform hypergeometric enrichment pathway analysis and gene set enrichment analysis, and to calculate pathway module scores for the IL-1β, TNF-α, type I IFN, and type II IFN (IFNγ) pathways. We did RNAScope targeting influenza virus or SARS-CoV-2 RNA and GeoMx spatial transcriptomics on the tracheobronchial biopsy samples. Biobanked bronchoalveolar lavage samples were retrieved from 166 eligible patients, of whom 40 had IAPA, 52 had influenza without aspergillosis, 33 had CAPA, and 41 had COVID-19 without aspergillosis. We did nCounter gene expression analysis on bronchoalveolar lavage samples from 134 patients, protein analysis on samples from 162 patients, and both types of analysis on samples from 130 patients. We performed RNAScope and spatial transcriptomics on the tracheobronchial biopsy samples from two patients with IAPA plus invasive Aspergillus tracheobronchitis and two patients with CAPA plus invasive Aspergillus tracheobronchitis. We observed a downregulation of genes associated with antifungal effector functions in patients with IAPA and, to a lesser extent, in patients with CAPA. We found a downregulated expression of several genes encoding proteins with functions in the opsonisation, recognition, and killing of conidia in patients with IAPA versus influenza only and in patients with CAPA versus COVID-19 only. Several genes related to LC3-associated phagocytosis, autophagy, or both were differentially expressed. Patients with CAPA had significantly lower neutrophil cell fractions than did patients with COVID-19 only. Patients with IAPA or CAPA had downregulated IFNγ signalling compared with patients with influenza only or COVID-19 only, respectively. The concentrations of several fibrosis-related growth factors were significantly elevated in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients with IAPA versus influenza only and from patients with CAPA versus COVID-19 only. In one patient with CAPA, we visualised an active or very recent SARS-CoV-2 infection disrupting the epithelial barrier, facilitating tissue-invasive aspergillosis. Our results reveal a three-level breach in antifungal immunity in IAPA and CAPA, affecting the integrity of the epithelial barrier, the capacity to phagocytise and kill Aspergillus spores, and the ability to destroy Aspergillus hyphae, which is mainly mediated by neutrophils. The potential of adjuvant IFNγ in the treatment of IAPA and CAPA should be investigated.
