Control beliefs are adaptive for athletes coping with significant obstacles to sport. Our study tested whether the effects of setback-related primary (PC) and secondary control (SC) on adaptive sport-related outcomes were mediated via setback rumination in collegiate athletes. We recruited 200 collegiate athletes using Prolific, from both Canada and the United States of America (Mage = 22.3 years; 125 women, 69 men, five nonbinary individuals, and one nonresponse). We used structural equation modelling to test direct paths from Time 1 PC and SC and rumination to Time 2 competition anxiety and sport commitment and test indirect paths of PC and SC to the outcomes through rumination. Findings revealed PC directly increased sport commitment, and through higher rumination, PC predicted higher competition anxiety. Athletes' SC predicted lower competition anxiety via lower rumination. We discuss the implications of these findings for athletes managing significant sport setbacks and for sport personnel supporting athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainbow third-party certifications are under explored, with no work exploring Rainbow consumers' perspectives. Consequently, this paper aims to capture these perceptions but from the perspective of transgender and non-binary (TGNB) consumers. Given dominant systemic binarism, TGNB individuals are often overlooked and experience invisibility and market vulnerability. Semi-structured interviews revealed TGNB consumers showed concern and scepticism about the authenticity of the Rainbow Tick certification with evaluating factors including transparency, robustness, accountability and inaccuracies emerging. Moreover, affiliated companies themselves do not take enough responsibility in promoting their certification and are not engaging communities continuously. The findings provide a tool for evaluating Rainbow certification as a branding tool and a typology for gauging authenticity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Representation matters and contributes to student engagement, sense of belonging, and overall success. This is especially true for our most vulnerable student populations, which include transgender and non-binary students who do not often see themselves represented within the structure of the academic institution. While university-wide initiatives to engage students such as first year seminars are important, so too are smaller scale efforts such as creating representation through the use of teaching materials and exercises in courses and information literacy sessions. When discussing representation for the LGBTQ + community, and especially transgender and non-binary parts of that community, it is important to acknowledge that within this larger group, there are any number of intersectional identities impacting individuals' sense of belonging, support, and access to success, all of which cannot be addressed in the space of this column or in the time it takes to run an information literacy session. The current study examined whether in-person social reactions to disclosure of sexual violence vary as a function of sexual identity (heterosexual vs. bisexual+ survivors) and gender (women vs. nonbinary survivors). A secondary aim of the current study was to examine whether sexual identity and/or gender moderated the relation between social reactions to disclosure and various negative psychological/behavioral outcomes. (i.e. symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), heavy episodic drinking, cannabis use). Participants were 472 bisexual+ or heterosexual survivors who identified as women (cisgender and transgender women) or gender nonbinary. Independent sample t-tests and three simple linear regressions were used to examine the study aims. Nonbinary survivors reported higher levels of social reactions that involved turning against the survivor and providing unsupportive acknowledgment of the sexual violence experience, compared to women survivors. Both bisexual+ and nonbinary survivors reported higher levels of PTSD symptoms and greater cannabis use compared to heterosexual and women survivors, respectively. For bisexual+ survivors, reactions that turned against the survivors were associated with lower levels of PTSD symptoms and higher levels of heavy episodic drinking. For bisexual+ survivors, reactions involving unsupportive acknowledgment were associated with higher levels of PTSD symptoms and lower heavy episodic drinking. The current study highlights how identification as bisexual+ or as nonbinary may influence in-person social reactions received upon disclosure of sexual violence as well as psychological outcomes following sexual violence. This article examines the radical possibilities of Latinx senses of place and geographies. I do this by deeply engaging with the film series, Will You Listen? by Kichwa artist Samay Arcentales Cajas, which explores Latinx people's experiences and relationships to place in Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada). Weaving an intersectional, interdisciplinary, and geographic framework and methodology, I demonstrate how Black/Afro-Latina, Indigenous, and racialized queer and nonbinary Latinx people featured voice distinct unsettling Latinx senses of place. I offer unsettling Latinx senses of place as a concept that speaks to how Latinx people understand, navigate, and make place through an embodied anticolonial feminist praxis, which challenges how intersecting relations of conquest and power shape their everyday lives and the spaces they inhabit. Unsettling Latinx senses of place engender refusals of normative claims to space and belonging in relation to the city, the nation-state, and hegemonic Latinidad, while also illustrating new ways of belonging grounded in relationships of care, reciprocity, and solidarity. Overall, I aim to enrich understandings of Latinx senses of place and contribute to the growing field of Latinx geographies in a way that works toward more just and liberatory geographies within and beyond the discipline. Schools are a site of gender-based violence for queer, trans, and non-binary youth. Drawing on a participatory visual research project with three queer, trans, and non-binary youth, we argue that selfie and cellphilm production offer a glimpse into queer maker literacies. We suggest that the practice of making do-it-yourself (DIY) media productions with queer youth and older community collaborators in out-of-school settings provides opportunities for new intergenerational friendships and networks to be built. Through a discussion of the processes of critical making within the workshop, and the themes that arise in the cellphilm, including gender-based violence, queer experiences of school structures – and the way that friendship is positioned in relation to solidarity, collaboration, and speaking back – we argue that through facilitation and co-production of media, workshop spaces can be engineered with participants as spaces of solidarity, action, and safety even amidst institutional settings. Institutional betrayal (IB) is well-documented among survivors of gender-based violence seeking help and/or reporting incidents of violence in various settings, including college campuses and health care settings. Two of the most common institutions from which survivors seek help are the criminal and civil legal systems; however, less is known about the experiences of IB among survivors interfacing with those systems. Previous studies exploring IB have implemented the Institutional Betrayal Questionnaire (IBQ) and its various adaptations, but this scale has not yet been analyzed in the criminal or civil legal context, nor has it been analyzed among racially marginalized survivors. This paper explores the potential for utilizing the IBQ-Health among a sample of 199 Black and Hispanic survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) who sought help from the criminal and/or civil legal system(s). An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to explore the fit of the measure to the data. Results suggest that the measure as it has previously been used does not demonstrate strong reliability or fit with this population or institution. Possible explanations and future directions are explored, including support for developing and piloting a new measure to assess IB among Black and Hispanic survivors of interpersonal violence who are seeking help from criminal and civil legal institutions. This study presents the most comprehensive national prevalence estimates of diverse gender and sexuality identities in Australians, and the associations with five separate types of child maltreatment and their overlap (multi-type maltreatment). Using Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) data (N = 8503), 9.5% of participants identified with a diverse sexuality and.9% with a diverse gender. Diverse identities were more prevalent in the youth cohort, with 17.7% of 16–24 years olds identifying with a diverse sexuality and 2.3% with a diverse gender. Gender and sexuality diversity also intersect – for example, with women (aged 16–24 and 25–44) more likely than men to identify as bisexual. The prevalence of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exposure to domestic violence was very high for those with diverse sexuality and/or gender identities. Maltreatment was most prevalent for participants in the youth cohort with diverse gender identities (90.5% experiencing some form of child maltreatment; 77% multi-type maltreatment) or diverse sexualities (85.3% reporting any child maltreatment; 64.3% multi-type maltreatment). The strong association found between child maltreatment and diverse sexuality and gender identities is critical for understanding the social and mental health vulnerabilities of these groups, and informing services needed to support them. Abstract\nPoints of interestResearch on disabled youth accounting for the intersection of multiple marginalized identities is lacking. This study explored the lived experiences of racially and/or gender minoritized disabled youth, focusing on how they negotiate their identities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 disabled youth who identified as gender diverse and/or racially minoritized. Thematic analysis was used to organize data into three main themes: (i) External influences on identity; (ii) Identity development/management; and (iii) Negotiating identity in space. Findings suggest that the development of identity is a complex process, where youth were influenced by external discriminatory beliefs and expectations, but also actively negotiated their identities through challenging these beliefs, accepting their identities, enacting agency regarding identity disclosure, and finding community and accessible spaces. Drag was founded by trans women of color in the 1960s NYC ballroom scene and provided an underground space for poor queer people of color to perform and utopianize their gender. Since then, drag participation has the potential to support gender affirmation, yet little is known about the mental health benefits that drag may have on its participants. Using data from the 2015 US Transgender Survey (N = 27,648), we investigate drag participation and gender (trans women, n = 8,392; trans men, n = 7,762; and non-binary people, n = 9,120) as they are related to a composite measure of mental health. First, we assess mental health scores among the entire sample. Then, we focus on drag participation and trans women’s mental health. Finally, we examine the interaction between drag participation and gender on the full sample. Findings indicate that drag participation is significantly related to positive mental health scores for trans women. Introduction: Providing appropriate healthcare for transgender, intersexual and non-binary (TIN) individuals remains a significant challenge, as this group experiences higher rates of health inequalities, discrimination, and barriers to accessing care. Emergency physicians (EP) often lack formal training and knowledge about caring for TIN patients, while comparatively less evidence is available for other healthcare professionals, including emergency nurses (EN). Therefore, our goal in this study was to explore the experiences, knowledge, and attitudes as well as education/training needs of both ENs and EPs in Germany regarding the care of TIN patients. Methods: In February 2023, we electronically surveyed EPs and ENs from emergency departments (ED) across Germany. The survey, developed through literature review and collaboration with experts and members of the TIN community, consisted of 15 closed-ended items divided into three sections: experiences and knowledge; attitudes; and education/training needs. We used standard descriptive statistics and tested for group differences using the chi-square test. Results: Of the approximately 1,665 EPs and ENs contacted, 502 completed the survey and were eligible for further analysis (30% response rate). Of the respondents, 233 (46%) were EPs and 269 (54%) were ENs, with ENs being significantly younger and with fewer years in practice. More than half reported experience caring for TIN patients (71% of ENs vs 61% of EPs; P = 0.002), but there were significant gaps in medical and non-medical knowledge. Attitudes toward TIN patients were generally positive, but differences in communication approaches were noted, with ENs significantly more likely than EPs to limit their communication with TIN patients to what was necessary (25% of ENs vs 17% of EPs; P = 0.006). Most respondents (55% of ENs and 58% of EPs) had no training in the management of TIN patients, with only 8% of EPs and 17% of ENs having received such training during their medical/nursing school education (P = 0.01). Both groups agreed that there is an urgent need to increase awareness of emergency medical care for TIN patients among ED staff. Conclusion: Both emergency physicians and nurses in Germany demonstrated deficits in knowledge of and clinical preparedness to care for patients in the ED who identify as transgender, intersexual and nonbinary, indicating a clear need for enhanced education, training, and institutional support to improve emergency care for this vulnerable patient population. Anxiety and depressive disorders are the most prevalent mental health problems in adolescents, however, little is known about the strategies they use to deal with their difficulties and regain power over their symptoms. This exploratory study documented the self-management strategies used by adolescents to recover from difficulties related to anxiety and/or depression. Individual interviews were conducted in Montreal, Canada with 49 participants aged 11 to 18 years (28 girls, 20 boys, and 1 non-binary person from various cultural origins) after approval by the Institutional Review Board. Young people were questioned about the self-management strategies they put in place when they felt stressed, sad, or anxious. The data were coded according to the thematic analysis method using an inductive approach. Participants reported 73 self-management strategies, regrouped in four broad themes: (a) I think through; (b) I surround myself with people/animals; (c) I feel and manage my emotions; (d) I continue my daily activities. Their strategies emphasize the role played by their social network and the place of social media as a support in their recovery. Though significant research highlights higher rates of mental ill-health and substance use among trans, non-binary and gender diverse (henceforth 'trans') young people, little research has considered patterns, contextual characteristics, and correlates of co-occurring experiences of mental ill-health and substance use among trans young people. Using data from the Trans Pathways study, we used prevalence ratios and age- and gender-adjusted logistic regression models to examine prevalence and differences of co-occurring substance use (past six-month cigarette use, alcohol use, and other drug use) and contextual characteristics of substance use (past six-month solitary alcohol and/or drug use, substance use for coping) by mental ill-health (depression disorder, anxiety disorder, past 12-month self-harm thoughts and behaviours, suicidal thoughts, planning, and attempt/s). Age- and gender-adjusted models assessed associations between co-occurring depressive and anxiety disorders and recent cigarette, alcohol, and other drug use (six co-occurring items total) and 18 interpersonal stressors. Significantly increased odds of smoking or recent use of cannabis or sedatives was observed among trans young people reporting depressive disorder, anxiety disorder (aORs ranging 1.8–3.1). Trans young people who reported recent smoking or use of cannabis, inhalants, or sedatives, had 40% to 80% reduced odds of past 12-month self-harm thoughts, self-harm behaviours, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempt/s (aORs ranging 0.2–0.6). On the other hand, solitary alcohol and/or other drug use and substance use for coping was significantly associated with increased odds of all mental ill-health outcomes. Issues with school, secure housing, and intimate partner abuse were the most robust correlates of co-occurring mental ill-health and substance use. Trans young people using substances, especially cigarettes, cannabis, and sedatives, often so do with co-occurring experiences of depression and anxiety though limited substance use in more 'social' contexts may confer benefits for preventing self-harm and suicide thoughts and behaviours. Continued research in partnership with trans young people is warranted to conceptualise more nuanced and precise conceptual parameters of trans-affirming substance use harm reduction approaches. Aims: To explore university nursing students and academic staff's perceptions of what increased gender diversity might bring to the nursing profession. Design: An exploratory study with students and academic staff from two university nursing schools. Methods: Students and staff in two university nursing schools were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey (October–November 2022). The survey focused on gender diversity within nursing and patient care, asking respondents about existing barriers to gender diversity and inviting ideas on increasing gender diversity within nursing. The survey findings helped inform questions, which were used to further explore views and thoughts of gender diversity within nursing through semi‐structured one‐to‐one interviews (January–February 2023). Results: Nearly, two‐thirds (64%, n = 69) of survey respondents strongly agreed/agreed that the lack of gender diversity in nursing negatively impacted delivering care to a gender‐diverse society. Most (84%, n = 90) strongly agreed/agreed that increased gender diversity within the nursing workforce would positively contribute to nursing. Three‐quarters (75%, n = 74) strongly agreed/agreed that working with a more gender‐diverse nursing workforce would enrich their experience as a nurse. Three themes emerged from the interview data: shared stereotypes; improved care through knowledge, better relations and the presence of a gender‐diverse workforce; a culture of welcome: suggested changes for the future. Conclusion: Most of those who participated in the study believe there are benefits to be gained from greater gender diversity within nursing. This study provides insight into the lack of gender diversity in the nursing environment, highlights how this might impact patient care and suggests actions to make nursing a more inclusive profession. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Practical solutions were suggested, including the greater visibility of trans and non‐binary persons in advertisement and recruitment campaigns to ensure nursing is viewed as a career choice for "all". Including a space for considered pronouns on university application forms, hospital documentation and name badges. Gender‐neutral titles and uniforms should be considered for all nursing staff, and more gender‐neutral toilets should be made available for staff and patients in university and hospital settings. Impact: This study addressed the lack of gender diversity in nursing and explored what an increase in gender diversity might bring to the nursing profession. The main findings were: (i) Less than a tenth (9%, n = 12) of respondents described their team of colleagues as being "extremely gender diverse". (ii) Most (84%, n = 90) strongly agreed/agreed that increased gender diversity within the nursing workforce would be a positive attribute to nursing. (iii) Three‐quarters 75% (n = 74) strongly agreed/agreed that working with a more gender‐diverse nursing workforce would enrich their experience as a nurse. (iv) Many stereotypes still exist in nursing and tackling them is important to make the profession more inclusive. (v) A nurse's gender can impact the care they provide. (vi) A more gender‐diverse workforce would better reflect the population it serves. (vii) This research will have an impact on the nursing profession globally. Despite recommendations in the US National Research Action Plan on Long COVID, gender identity is rarely reported in research and surveillance used to guide public health programming and clinical care. We analyzed data from a cross-sectional study of COVID-19 in a nationwide sample of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people (N = 2,134). Participants were surveyed between June 14, 2021 and May 1, 2022. Data were restricted to 817 participants who reported confirmed or suspected COVID-19 to estimate the prevalence of long COVID, defined as symptoms persisting for ≥ 3 months. Ten percent of participants with a history of COVID-19 reported symptom duration consistent with long COVID, ranging from 4.8% to 12.9% across gender identities. Long COVID was most common in transmasculine and nonbinary people assigned female sex at birth. There was no evidence of an association with reported hormone therapy, supporting current recommendations that prioritize gender-affirming care during treatment for long COVID. As a condition which profoundly impacts health and productivity, long COVID is likely to exacerbate existing disparities. Principles of equity demand that we reduce barriers to prevention, diagnosis, and care for long COVID, and ensure that research and surveillance are inclusive of TNB people and disaggregate findings by gender identity. Long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention (LAI-PrEP) was approved for use in the United States in 2021, yet little is known about perceptions of LAI-PrEP among transgender and nonbinary young adults, a group that faces substantial barriers to HIV prevention. We investigated US transgender and nonbinary young adults' perceptions of and attitudes toward LAI-PrEP and how perceived advantages and disadvantages of LAI-PrEP related to the PrEP continuum of care. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 31 transgender and nonbinary young adults who reported oral PrEP use or were PrEP-eligible. We analyzed responses using both a deductive RADaR approach, to identify LAI-PrEP perceptions relevant to the PrEP continuum of care, and an inductive thematic analysis to explore key themes. In this study, all PrEP-experienced and most PrEP-naïve participants indicated an interest in LAI-PrEP, citing advantages over daily oral medication (e.g., fewer adherence challenges). Three key themes emerged: (1) Some participants linked perceived advantages of LAI-PrEP to experiences with gender-affirming care (e.g., familiarity with needles via hormone use). (2) Participants weighed trade-offs and contextual factors that influenced their LAI-PrEP preferences (e.g., interest contingent on whether location for receiving injection was geographically accessible). (3) Participants envisaged alternative delivery methods that could enhance LAI-PrEP acceptability and uptake (e.g., home injection). HIV prevention programs should incorporate the insights of transgender and nonbinary young adults to ensure that emerging HIV prevention technologies are accessible and responsive to the needs and concerns of people of all gender modalities. Few studies have focused on transgender and nonbinary youths' (TNBY) gender development and even less well understood is how family members understand TNBY identity. The current study investigated: (a) how TNBY describe their gender identity over time, and (b) how family members understand TNBY gender identity over time. The baseline sample included 96 members of 33 families (33 TNBY, 48 cisgender caregivers, 15 siblings) from the United States; 30 families continued after Wave 1. Results indicated that 23 (77.7%) youth's gender identity labels remained the same throughout all five waves, with seven (23.3%) youth shifting their description more than once—all youth continuing after Wave 1 who reported shifts, shifted from one TNB identity to another TNB identity. Family agreement varied across waves amongst family members regarding gender identity, gender expression, and pronoun use. Agreement and partial agreement were primarily in the High and Moderate categories across domains, with the pronouns domain demonstrating the highest level of agreement across pairings. Disagreement amongst pairings was usually not present or coded as Low, indicating greater shared understanding for families across waves and domains. Results suggest a nuanced developmental process for TNBY and their families regarding understanding of gender identity, gender expression, and pronoun use. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This study focused on how transgender and nonbinary youth and their families collectively understand the youth's gender identity over time. We also examined how youth's identity fluctuated over time. We found that while many youth indicated shifts, all but one youth identified as transgender/nonbinary by the end of the study. Findings indicate family members often share an understanding of youth identity, with the highest shared understanding for pronouns and least shared understanding for gender expression. There is an urgent need for research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of trans and non-binary (TNB) youth, who experience high rates of stigma, bullying, suicide, substance use, discrimination, and violence. Parental support of TNB is a crucial buffer against those experiences, yet little is known about how parents arrive at a state of being supportive and affirming to their TNB child. This study aimed to understand parents' paths of acceptance of their TNB children. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with highly affirming parents of TNB. Parents who are highly affirming of their child described their journeys, with a focus on assets and barriers to acceptance. America has experienced a rapid increase in loneliness, substance use, and suicidality. This increase is particularly deleterious for Veterans, who, as compared to nonmilitary-connected civilians, experience elevated rates of loneliness, substance use, and suicidality. In this project we investigated the link between loneliness, substance use, and suicidality, paying particular attention to the mediational role of loneliness between substance use and suicidality. 1,469 Veterans (male, n = 1004, 67.2%; female, n = 457, 32.3%; transgender/non-binary/prefer not to say, n = 8, 0.5%) answered online surveys in the Mental Health and Well-Being Project. Items assessed participants on psychosocial antecedents of health and wellness. Pearson correlations and mediational models were used to determine if loneliness, substance use, and suicidality were related and if loneliness mediated the link between substance use and suicidality. Results indicated that loneliness, substance use, and suicidality were significantly and positively related (rs =.33–.42, ps <.01). Additionally, loneliness partially mediated the link between substance use and suicidality (β =.08 [.06–.10]), suggesting that, within the context of substance use in Veterans, loneliness may account for significant variance in suicidality. Together findings suggest the Veterans Health Administration should support, fund, and study community engagement activities that could reduce the development or intensity of substance use, loneliness, and suicidality in Veterans. It is a university's responsibility to ensure their autistic students are supported academically. While current research gives us an indication of how universities provide this support, it reveals very little about the experiences that autistic students themselves have with such support. In this research, we took a participatory approach, via a collaboration between autistic and non-autistic staff and students, to examine the experiences that autistic students have with their academic support. Twenty-eight autistic students from across England completed an online survey, and content analysis of this data found that mentoring and changes to exam arrangements were the two most commonly reported supports. Nine autistic students from one English university then took part in the semi-structured interviews and, through reflexive thematic analysis of the data, three themes were generated. First, that students appreciate their academic supports; second that support is very dependent on staff involvement; and third that responsibility for academic support falls on the student. These findings demonstrate the academic supports that autistic students consider effective, as well as where they feel barriers still exist that prevents them from fully accessing their support. In brief: Transmasculine and gender diverse adolescents and young adults can often have nuanced considerations when utilizing contraception. This narrative review discusses contraception utilization patterns and specific considerations in this population and proposes a patient-oriented comparison of contraceptive options. Abstract: Contraception care is an important aspect of comprehensive gender-affirming care in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents and young adults (AYAs). TGD AYAs seek contraception care for a variety of reasons, and several important considerations are unique to this population. In addition to pregnancy prevention, transmasculine and gender nonbinary persons may seek contraception to achieve amenorrhea and reduce gender dysphoria, or as part of their gender-affirming journey. While patients on testosterone therapy often experience amenorrhea, pregnancy has been reported and testosterone is not a form of contraception. Visits for contraceptive counseling provide an opportunity to discuss fertility goals and preservation planning as well as the possibility that some methods may provide endometrial protection. In this narrative review, we analyze the current literature and discuss specific considerations for contraceptive use in this population. In response to negative media attention regarding gender affirming medical interventions (GAMI), the current manuscript explores the content of messages trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals receive regarding the impacts of GAMI on gender dysphoria. Further, TNB individuals' experiences of the effects of GAMI on gender dysphoria are described. A sample of responses from 105 TNB participants were analyzed utilizing qualitative content analysis. These qualitative results revealed that the messages participants received were split between trans negative and trans affirming aspects. Relatedly, participants' experiences also reflected a dichotomy between current limitations and positive impacts of GAMI on gender dysphoria. The discussion focuses on how participants' positive experiences with GAMI, which resulted in decreased gender dysphoria and psychological distress, challenge the current political discourse that attempts to ban GAMI. This study examined the influences of internalized heterosexism (IH) and LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community connectedness on distress by testing two competing hypotheses: the connectedness as a form of coping hypothesis and the connectedness as an explanatory process hypothesis. These hypotheses were tested with a random intercept cross-lagged panel model using a three-wave archival longitudinal dataset with a nationally represented probability sample of 1,518 cisgender and nonbinary LGBQ+ individuals. Results supported the connectedness as a form of coping hypothesis, showing that the effect of IH on distress was mediated by increased connectedness, such that increased IH at time 1 predicted increased connectedness at time 2, which predicted decreased distress at time 3. These results provide evidence that LGBQ+ individuals may cope with IH by seeking connections with other LGBQ+ people, which has positive benefits for mental health. Background: Some transgender and nonbinary people undergo phalloplasty and/or metoidioplasty as part of their medical transition process. Across surgical disciplines, a variety of resources are used to assist patients who are preparing for surgeries, including educational materials, workshops, peer support, and lifestyle changes. For gender-affirming surgeries, patients undergoing assessments to discern whether they are ready to undergo the surgery, and to assist them in achieving preparedness when needed. Little research investigates what resources are useful in helping patients to feel prepared to undergo phalloplasty or metoidioplasty, and how assessments and resources can promote patient autonomy in the process. Respect for patient autonomy is one of the central tenets of ethical healthcare, yet historically, scholarship related to pre-surgical assessments for gender-affirming surgery has focused determining the ideal surgical candidate rather than respecting patient autonomy and ascertaining individual patient needs. Methods: This study sought to fill this gap by utilizing data from PROGRESS (Patient-Reported Outcomes of Genital Reconstruction and Experiences of Surgical Satisfaction), a cross-sectional, community-based survey of trans and nonbinary adults from the United States of America and Canada who had undergone one or more of these surgeries. Results: Results revealed most participants (86%, n = 186) felt prepared to undergo surgery, though the majority of our sample (53%, n = 105) did not find referral letter assessments to be helpful. Peer support such as online resources/blogs were rated as highly useful, along with surgical consults. In a multivariable logistic regression, higher perceived preparedness was associated with identifying as queer (inclusive of gay, bi and pansexual compared to being straight), and feeling that one's assessment process was useful (as opposed to not useful). Type of assessment was not significantly associated with preparedness; therefore, what is most useful when preparing for surgery may vary across individuals. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals who interact with preparing patients should develop new or utilize existing resources to assist patients in identifying their preparation needs and achieving preparedness. Our data supports assessments that center surgical care planning rather than assessing level of gender dysphoria. Future longitudinal research could further refine which assessment processes are most effective in helping patients who are preparing for these surgeries. Introduction: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) significantly impacts adults' wellbeing, causing both physical and psychological harm. IPV has been consistently linked to adverse sexual health outcomes, including an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and sexual dysfunction. This systematic review examines the evolving relationship between IPV and sexual health outcomes in adults from 2014 to 2024, addressing gaps in understanding across diverse populations and exploring the complex interplay between violence, sexuality, and health. Methods: A comprehensive search of multiple databases was conducted for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2014 and February 2024. Studies examining the association between IPV and sexual health variables in adult populations (aged 18 and older) were included. The review followed PRISMA guidelines, and 27 articles met the inclusion criteria after full-text screening and quality assessment. Results: IPV was consistently associated with poorer sexual health outcomes across diverse populations and contexts. Studies utilized various validated instruments to assess IPV and sexual health. Research primarily focused on cisgender heterosexual women, with limited studies on cisgender heterosexual men, men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals. IPV was linked to an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, sexual dysfunction, and decreased sexual satisfaction. The relationship between IPV and sexual health was influenced by factors such as gender identity, sexual orientation, and cultural context. Discussion: The review highlights the complex relationship between IPV and sexual health, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and culturally sensitive approaches. Significant research gaps exist, particularly regarding lesbian women and non-binary individuals. Objective: This study aimed to create and validate a novel measure of gender-related minority stress in transgender and non-binary adolescents (TNBA). TNBA face higher risks of varied behavioral health concerns compared to their cisgender peers, a disparity often attributed to the presence of minority stress due to discrimination. To date, no comprehensive measures of gender-related minority stress exist for use with TNBA. Method: The present study recruited a U.S. national sample (N = 444, aged 12–17; 65.5% White, 9.5% Black, 9.5% Latine, 15.5% other ethnicity; 34.7% transmasculine, 17.3% transfeminine, 38.3% non-binary, 9.5% agender) of TNBA. An initial item pool was developed from life history calendars, a modified Delphi process, and cognitive interviews with TNBA. Analytic methods including principal components analysis, item response theory, measurement invariance testing, and reliability analyses were conducted to establish the final scale. Concurrent validity was established across behavioral outcomes (mental health, suicidal thoughts and behavior, substance use), and convergent and divergent validity compared the Transgender Adolescent Stress Survey–Minority Stress (TASS-MS) to existing measures of gender-related minority stress. Results: The TASS-MS and its subscales (disaffirmation, visibility and internalized transnegativity, family) were significantly associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms, PTSD symptoms, suicidal behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, marijuana, and prescription drug use. The TASS-MS was moderately and weakly correlated with convergent and divergent measures, respectively, indicating specificity to minority stress. Conclusion: The TASS-MS is a reliable and valid measure for future research with TNBA. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) can be motivated by a broad range of functions and many individuals report multiple reasons for self-injuring. Most NSSI research has involved predominantly female samples and few studies have examined gender similarities and differences in function endorsement. We characterise the prevalence and versatility of NSSI functions within a gender-diverse online sample of cisgender women (cis-women ; n = 280), cisgender men (cis-men ; n = 176), and transgender, non-binary, and other gender non-conforming young adults (TGNC; n = 80) age 18–30 (M = 23.73, SD = 3.55). The Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (OSI-F) assessed 24 intrapersonal and social functions across nine domains: affect regulation, self-punishment, anti-dissociation, anti-suicide, sensation seeking, sexuality, interpersonal influence, and body image. TGNC participants and cis-women were significantly more likely to report intrapersonally motivated NSSI and greater function versatility than cis-men. Low mood, emotional distress, suicidality, and trauma symptomology appeared to contribute to gender differences in function endorsement. Gender similarities also emerged; across groups, intrapersonal functions were substantially more common than social functions, and the most endorsed domains were affect regulation and self-punishment. No domains were gender specific. The OSI-F was developed from majority female samples and may not adequately capture the experiences of other gender groups. Interventions which reduce distress and strengthen emotion regulation are likely to benefit individuals who self-injure regardless of gender. However, most individuals report multiple NSSI functions and person-centred interventions which address this complexity are needed. Suicidality is a multifaceted phenomenon affected by several multisystemic vulnerabilities, including demographic, psychopathological, and family factors. However, few studies have explored the contribution of specific features of deliberate self-harm (DSH) to suicide risk, particularly DSH diversity, while also accounting for other relevant explanatory family and mental health dimensions. The main goal of this study was to examine if DSH diversity predicts the risk for suicide in adolescents in the presence of sociodemographics, depressive symptoms, and family relationship characteristics. This study consisted of 437 Portuguese adolescents (53.8% male, 42.8% female, 3.4% non-binary; Mage= 15.2, SD = 1.87), of which 220 confirmed having a lifetime history of DSH. The participants completed a self-report questionnaire measuring depressive symptomatology, interparental conflicts, family communication, DSH, and suicidal ideation. A logistic regression analysis was conducted. Our multivariate model revealed that depressive symptoms, family communication, and DSH diversity are predictors of suicide risk in adolescents. The strongest predictor was depressive symptoms. The analyses indicated that our global model has excellent predictive validity to discriminate between those with and without suicide risk, and the inclusion of DSH diversity enhances the identification of these vulnerable youth. In addition, our results suggest that non-binary gender adolescents are particularly at risk. The set of characteristics we found that predict suicide risk highlights the multisystemic nature of this phenomenon: individual/ psychopathological and relational dimensions. We also underscore the need to be vigilant of adolescents' number of used DSH behaviors. AbstractIn this paper, we explore queer temporalities in relation to queer women and non-binary people’s sexuality later in life. Drawing on 30 interviews with 32 queer women and non-binary people aged 49-72 about sexuality and intimacy in later life, we highlight the participants’ stories about the instability and non-linearity of sexuality across the life course. First, we examine how our participants narrated later-life changes in their sexual subjectivity and how the assumption of compulsory (hetero)sexuality manifests in the participants’ stories about the unfolding of their sexual identities over the life course. We then analyze the compulsory non-sexuality imposed on women as they grow older. Finally, we explore the potential of reinterpreting sexuality in later life to destabilize pervasive normative notions of sexuality by analyzing the bodily changes the participants described. Rather than eradicating difference, such an analysis of later-life sexuality and queer temporality opens up the possibility of affirming changing desires and pleasures and acknowledging the body’s agency in shaping later-life sexuality. The teaching of jazz history in tertiary institutions has historically focussed on the "great men" of jazz (Whyton, 2010), with jazz historiography giving scant recognition to female-identifying musicians (Rustin and Tucker, 2008). The historicising of certain individuals and their music is fundamental to understanding jazz, yet it silences female and gender non-binary voices, overshadowing the roles they played in the evolution of the genre. This study aims to deepen our understanding of the experience of students engaging with jazz history in the 21st century. Halberstam and Halberstam's (2005) theory of queer time and disruption serves as the primary framework for analysing shifts in teaching and learning perceptions concerning hegemonic and male-dominated narratives in jazz history. To understand the experiences and perspectives of those directly involved in jazz history pedagogy this research draws on an education-focused, polyethnographic approach utilising data derived from self-selected student research topics, student surveys, and teacher interviews. Our findings highlight both the shifting discourse within tertiary education, teaching experiences and the interwoven attitudes of students, reflecting on how these dialogues came to impact and shape the other. The study provides implications for how jazz education may continue to evolve in both attitude and enlightened access in the education of jazz learners. Objectives: The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess how COVID-19 affected the levels of different mental health variables in prison inmates. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA format in the Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and ScienceDirect electronic databases between August and September 2023. Methodological quality was assessed using the critical appraisal tools for studies of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results: Thirteen studies were included. The studies found increased levels of stress, anxiety, fear, depression, and negative emotions associated with lack of information about the pandemic and isolation leading to reduced social interaction. In addition, lack of access to common recreational spaces, limited access to support resources, especially mental health resources, fear of contracting the virus, and lack of trust in prison staff and in themselves to be protected were identified. Conclusion: Further research may be necessary in prison populations with added vulnerability, such as the elderly, women, transgender and non-binary persons, to determine specific interventions, after assessing the prevalent psychological sequelae. This qualitative study examines the experiences and functions of gender among people who do not identify their genders as exclusively either man or woman (e.g., genderfluid, nonconforming, agender, genderqueer, multigender, nonbinary people). In this paper, we use the term "not-binary" as an inclusive term that refers to these gender identities categorically. Semi-structured interviews with 17 participants living in the U.S. focused on meanings and functions of gender; processes of navigating intrapersonal, interpersonal, and sociopolitical experiences; and intersectional identities. Responses were analyzed using critical-constructivist grounded theory method (Levitt in Essentials of critical-constructivist grounded theory research, American Psychological Association, 2021). Findings revealed that participants intentionally engaged in processes of gender exploration, contestation, and transformation to deliberately challenge and reshape their own conceptualization of gender and that of others. Participants shared the meanings of their identities and pronouns for expressing their sense of self, and how they wished others to interact with them, as well as the complications of language for expressing genders that can be fluid and changing. In addition, participants conveyed the experience of having their gender identities politicized and their rights contested on the national stage. Expanding the transnormative narrative that focuses on gender dysphoria, participants highlighted affirming community and positive and euphoric gender experiences that supported them to engage in resistance to oppressive forces. These findings underscore the importance of education on not-binary experiences, the provision of gender affirming care, and the correction of public misinformation for the well-being of non-binary individuals. Background and Objectives: It is well established that provider lack of knowledge in the field of transgender and nonbinary health is as ignificant barrier to care and that training in this area is lacking. This study examined how family medicine residents' self-confidence and medical knowledge in providing gender-affirming care changed after completing a novel, online curriculum on transgender and nonbinary care. Methods: Thirty-nine family medicine residents were invited to complete the curriculum. Change inself-confidence was determined by the difference in scores on a Likert scale on a pre- and post-survey. Change in medical knowledge was assessed by examining the difference between pre- and post-test scores on a novel multiple-choice examination. Results: Only 7% of current residents agreed that their current training is adequate in order to provide comprehensive primary care to transgender and nonbinary people. After completion of the curriculum, 100% of participants felt at least somewhat confident providing primary care to transgender and nonbinary people, including hormone therapy. Average medical knowledge post-test scores trended higher than the pre-test results (mean (SD) at pre = 11.2 (1.4) vs post = 14.6 (2.8)). Conclusions: An online, self-directed curriculum on caring for transgender and nonbinary patients in the primary care setting, including management of gender-affirming hormone therapy, has the potential to increase confidence and knowledge in this field, decreasing barriers to care for this population. This article highlights sexual health education findings from a larger qualitative research study that examines the lived experiences of transgender and non-binary (TNB) youth (aged 14–25) in Alberta. This study contributes to a growing field focusing on the unique experiences of TNB students in Canada by exploring the gaps and successes in sexual health education. Given that there is no federally mandated sexual health curriculum, and that each Canadian province and territory updates curriculum and teaches sexual health differently, this study aims to provide insights into the experiences of TNB youth and the sexual health education they have received in their formal educational environments. The research findings highlight two major themes and two sub-themes: (1) All participants found sexual health education in schools to be inadequate in some way. (2) If you want something done right, do it yourself. Sub-themes included; (2a) the community or internet media are key sources of relevant sexual health information, and (2b) youth have limited access to the sexual orientation and gender identity–specific sexual health information they want. Campus sexual assault is a problem that overwhelmingly affects cisgender women and transgender, genderqueer/questioning, and nonbinary (TGQN) students. Yet, students of any gender may be perpetrators or victims of assault. Thus, it is important that prevention programs incorporate a range of scenarios that depict different genders as both perpetrators and victims, while also acknowledging the differential risk between gender groups. Gender-specific programming is one way of achieving this goal. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we synthesized studies evaluating campus sexual assault prevention programs implemented with specified gender groups in the United States. Through a comprehensive literature search, we identified 38 studies that met eligibility criteria and were disseminated through 2021 (N = 22 women's studies; N = 16 men's studies; N = 0 TGQN studies). Programs overwhelmingly portrayed women as victims and men as perpetrators or bystanders while largely ignoring experiences of TGQN students. A greater proportion of women's programs included risk reduction content that relayed tactics participants may use to avoid victimization. A greater proportion of men's programs included bystander content that emphasized ways participants may stop others from committing sexual assault. Women's programs had a small but significant and favorable effect on victimization, but studies evaluating these programs did not measure perpetration outcomes. Men's programs had a non-significant effect on perpetration but victimization outcomes were not measured. Gender-specific prevention programming should begin to reflect the differential risks of perpetration and victimization across gender identities, and the effects of this program content should be rigorously evaluated. The study examines the relationships between experienced heterosexism, perceived social support, and depression in people diverse in sexual and gender minority (SGM) identity. The cross-sectional online study was performed in Poland among 509 SGM people, with an average age of 22 years (M = 22.39, SD = 4.78). Minority stress was assessed using the Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ), perceived social support was measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and depression symptoms were evaluated using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale – Revised (CESD-R). The study supported a buffering effect of social support from family and friends in the relationship between minority stress and depression symptoms. Network analysis (NA) showed that minority stress from family of origin, mediated by low family support, plays a key and bridging role in increasing suicidal ideation, especially in dual SGM individuals. Friends are the most important source of support for people with a single SGM identity. Therefore, to prevent suicidal thoughts in LGBTQ+ people at increased risk of depression, systemic therapy should be used in addition to interventions focusing on coping with minority stress and symptoms of depression. Aims: This qualitative study aimed to explore what it is like for trans and non‐binary (TNB) person‐centred therapists to be exposed to transprejudice in their client work, and how they navigate such relationships. In so doing, the study aims to amplify TNB perspectives, encourage better allyship from cisgender colleagues, workplaces and professional bodies, and inform understandings of person‐centred theory and practice. Method: Five White, TNB, person‐centred therapists took part in non‐directive interviews. A reflexive thematic analysis was performed with a phenomenological and hermeneutical approach. Findings: Therapists perceived their encounters with transprejudice in client work to be infrequent or less intense than in other areas of their lives. Clients who expressed transprejudice were seen as situated in a transprejudiced context, which allowed the therapists to maintain unconditional positive regard and empathy. The therapists nonetheless reported an adverse effect on their well‐being, which required proactive support from peers. Implications: This study demonstrates the need for cisgender colleagues of TNB therapists to be sensitive to the dynamics of transprejudice. Further research is necessary to elucidate the role of internalised transprejudice in shaping TNB therapists' understandings of their person‐centred practice. This qualitative research uses a case study to observe non-binary representation in TV fiction. The Dan character from the Spanish series HIT (RTVE, 2020–present), who is the first openly non-binary character in Spanish TV fiction, is analyzed through the lens of Queer Media Studies. The research applies a combination of content and discourse analysis. Qualitative content categories include a character's visibility, identity, relevance, embodiment, and social interaction. Discourse analysis categories include character's construction, lexicalization, propositional framing, and focus. Results show that Dan's non-binary depiction revolves around three significant axes: dualism, confusion, and exceptional talent. These axes frame social attitudes toward non-binary people and are composed by a set of features identified in Dan's case which also informs society's mind-sets. These traits are proposed as an analytical-theoretical tool for further analyses of non-binary representation in different cultural contexts. Purpose: Develop a comprehensive framework for assessing the knowledge organization systems (KOSs), including the taxonomy of Wikipedia and the ontologies of Wikidata, with a specific focus on enhancing management and retrieval with a gender nonbinary perspective. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs heuristic and inspection methods to assess Wikipedia's KOS, ensuring compliance with international standards. It evaluates the efficiency of retrieving non-masculine gender-related articles using the Catalan Wikipedian category scheme, identifying limitations. Additionally, a novel assessment of Wikidata ontologies examines their structure and coverage of gender-related properties, comparing them to Wikipedia's taxonomy for advantages and enhancements. Findings: This study evaluates Wikipedia's taxonomy and Wikidata's ontologies, establishing evaluation criteria for gender-based categorization and exploring their structural effectiveness. The evaluation process suggests that Wikidata ontologies may offer a viable solution to address Wikipedia's categorization challenges. Originality/value: The assessment of Wikipedia categories (taxonomy) based on KOS standards leads to the conclusion that there is ample room for improvement, not only in matters concerning gender identity but also in the overall KOS to enhance search and retrieval for users. This study contributes to research exploring social factors shaping gender identification. Informed by structural symbolic interactionism, social identity theory, and Levitt's psychosocial theory of gender, we explore how a key aspect of external social structure—adolescent family socioeconomic status—is associated with gender identification in emerging adulthood. We examine whether correlates of family socioeconomic status, including adolescent family and educational experiences and friend and high school characteristics, are associated with a cisgender, binary transgender, nonbinary, or gender unsure identification. Using data from High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), we find a positive association between adolescent family socioeconomic status and a nonbinary gender identification. Analyses indicate that educational and family experiences account for the largest percentage of the association between adolescent family socioeconomic status and nonbinary gender identification, potentially representing higher SES youths' heightened access to middle- and upper-class cultural schemas and resources. We adapted the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES) to be more inclusive of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people and undertook preliminary validation of the measure. We added gender-neutral language, assault types thought to be more common and more emotionally impactful among these individuals, and coercion tactics specific to transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expensive people. We piloted this Gender-Inclusive SES (GI-SES) with an online survey of transgender and gender-expansive undergraduates who experienced campus sexual assault. We assessed acceptability via rapid qualitative analysis of feedback. We gathered preliminary evidence of validity by calculating the agreement in assault type and coercion tactic between open-ended descriptions of the assault and the GI-SES response, as well as by testing four hypotheses about the relative frequency and severity of different types of assaults within the sample. Three hundred eighty-eight transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expensive students completed the survey. Qualitative responses indicated that participants felt the GI-SES was inclusive and respectful. Results were partially consistent with hypotheses supporting validity, and there was 90.9% agreement in assault type and 85.9% agreement in coercion tactics between GI-SES responses and written narratives. The GI-SES provides researchers, clinicians, and service providers with a tool, preliminarily validated with a trans and gender-diverse college sample, to capture the unique experiences of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expensive sexual assault survivors. We used engagement marketing and human-centered design principles to cocreate a digital decision support tool for research participation with LGBTQIA+ community members to help them make an informed decision about joining the All of Us Research Program. Building on results from the research phase, we conducted eight problem validation and solutioning workshops with 48 LGBTQIA+ community members. Community members validated barriers to engagement with All of Us and brainstormed 47 potential digital solutions. We developed potential solutions into 27 concepts (descriptive text and visual storyboards) and assessed acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and engagement in a set of 10 concept testing workshops with 57 community members. We developed one of the highest rated concepts, the "Decide Later Tool," into a prototype and tested it with 45 LGBTQIA+ community members and 14 community advisory group members to assess acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, usability, and engagement. Prototype testing participants indicated that the tool provides information to help with decision making, provides a clear value or benefit to them, was designed for someone like them, provides the right amount of information, and is easy to use; they also offered constructive feedback to improve it. Across the design and development phases, community members indicated that the process of engaging them demonstrated integrity, competence, dependability, trust, and collaboration; fostered a sense of connection to All of Us; and will enhance future engagement with All of Us. The paper presents a comparative mixed methods study of the accessibility and usability for disabled people of four video conferencing tools, Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet and Skype. Useable responses were obtained from 81 disabled people with diverse characteristics, mainly in the UK, though some groups had low representation. None of the tools was considered fully accessible and useable. Zoom was both the most commonly used and the most frequently preferred (56.1%) tool, with MS Teams second in usage and a trailing second in preferences (15.9%). It was considered to have better captioning, but otherwise to generally be a poor second to Zoom. Skype was the most commonly used before lockdown, but was considered dated and its limited use was mainly social, whereas the other tools were also used in work and education. The results were used to draw up separate lists of recommendations for developers and meeting organisers and hosts, as the study also identified actions for organisers and hosts to improve meeting accessibility. Developer recommendations include several easy to set customisation and user friendly interface features, involving disabled people and specific accessibility features, including compatibility with assistive technology, keyboard shortcuts for all functions and automatically-on high quality captions. Accurately measuring gender and sex is crucial in public health and epidemiology. Iteratively reexamining how variables—including gender and sex—are conceptualized and operationalized is necessary to achieve impactful research. Reexamining gender and sex advances epidemiology toward its goals of health promotion and disease elimination. While we cannot reduce the complexities of sex and gender to simply an issue of measurement, striving to capture these concepts and experiences accurately must be an ongoing dialogue and practice—to the benefit of the field and population health. We assert that epidemiology must counteract misconceptions and accurately measure gender and sex in epidemiology. This study explores the experiences and identities of nonbinary autistic people, an under-researched population. While past studies have posited a co-occurrence of autism and transgender identity, little research focuses specifically on nonbinary autistic adults. This community-based study draws on interview data from 44 nonbinary participants. Participants expressed nuanced and informed understandings of their gender identities, highlighting fluidity and a rejection traditional binary gender roles. Participants discussed the connection of their autistic and nonbinary identities and how their identity is shaped by external forces such as politics, community, and interpersonal relationships. Findings highlight the need for the inclusion of nonbinary autistic people in autism research and for autism services and programming to be affirming of various gender identities. This study explores the experiences and identities of nonbinary autistic people. The relationship between autistic and nonbinary identities has not been researched in detail. Few studies focus specifically on nonbinary autistic adults. We interviewed 44 nonbinary individuals for this study. This study presents an inclusive K-12 AI curriculum for elementary schools, focusing on six design principles to address gender disparities. The curriculum, designed by the researchers and an elementary teacher, uses tangible tools, and emphasizes collaboration in solving daily problems. The MANOVA results revealed initial gender differences in AI knowledge. Following MANCOVA analysis showed significant improvements in AI knowledge, as well as perceptions and behavioral intentions toward AI, effectively bridging the observed knowledge gaps without any significant differences attributed to gender or initial knowledge levels. This evidence underscores the success of tangible and collaborative AI interventions in uniformly enhancing AI knowledge and positively changing perceptions and behavioral intentions among all participants, regardless of gender. Both female and non-binary students felt increased engagement and reduced anxiety toward AI, with improved comprehension and a preference for collaborative learning. Individuals who identify as transgender (T) and/or gender nonbinary (NB) face various struggles, such as stigma and discrimination, and have a higher risk for mental health, physical health, and economic challenges as compared with those who identify within the binary of male/female and are cisgender. Getting older has its own challenges including health concerns. Yet, research is limited about the lived experiences of aging for trans men, trans women, trans NB, and NB (not trans) in the US. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the experiences of twenty individuals aged 50 and older who identified as T/NB and advances our understanding of older T/NB adults. Participants' gender identities and understanding of those identities (e.g., binary/NB) varied. Although aware of gender from an early age, participants had few role models, limited information, and a lack of applicable language and community. Navigating healthcare services as T/NB older adults, fear of treatment they would receive if in long-term care facilities and fear of not understanding their gender identities if they had dementia were concerns. Implications for practice include the need for healthcare and mental health care practitioners to have awareness of the diversity within this community and be trained to provide culturally sensitive services with a nuanced understanding of gender identities.
