Throughout its serial run, Charles Dickens's Pickwick Papers (1836–7), was repurposed hundreds of times by the provincial press. From acting as innocuous filler material to making strategic political statements, provincial newspaper editors evoked, excerpted and adapted Pickwick as quickly as Dickens was penning the instalments, showing a keen responsiveness to political topicalities relevant to their reading communities. This article contends that these types of journalistic re-use benefit from being read collectively as a form of remediation, defined by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin as 'the formal logic by which new media refashion prior media forms'. It argues that these remediations are vital to understanding the politics of the provincial press because they became one method through which provincial newspapers articulated a localised response to the national political debates that raged following the 1832 Reform Act. As well as reflecting the political priorities of specific communities, these remediations nuance our understanding of Pickwick 's popularity by drawing attention to aspects of its construction that lent themselves to re-use. While explicit engagement with party politics is conspicuously absent from Pickwick , provincial editors capitalised upon this generality and imbued their re-workings of the serial with a partisanship that Dickens himself avoided, while using his name to substantiate and authorise their own pieces. In this respect, these remediations invite us to place Pickwick at the heart of political debate in the papers, by foregrounding the close relationship between newspaper politics, serial literature, and provincial identity in the 1830s. Sammendrag Fra 1951 til 1967 produserte Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk (KV) trykkpresser. I historiske fremstillinger er verken omfanget av eller konteksten rundt denne produksjonen utforsket i dybden. En gjennomgang av ulike kilder viser at KV produserte to dyptrykkpresser og minst 13 høytrykksrotasjonspresser til aviser. En tredjedel av høytrykkpressene ble bestilt av norske aviser. Høytrykkpresse-produksjonen var del av etterkrigstidens politikk rundt gjenreisning, industrireisning og sysselsetting, og av storpolitikk som norsk medlemskap i Nato. KV siktet seg først og fremst inn på det nordiske markedet, men til tross for politisk vilje og økonomiske bidrag fra Arbeiderparti-regjeringene kom fabrikken aldri helt inn i verken det norske eller det nordiske markedet. Salgsinnsatsen gav ikke de forventede resultatene. KVs presser kan ha vært både for dyre og for store for avisene, og de foretrakk fabrikkene de allerede hadde brukt i flere tiår. This article explores the way in which leading Yorkshire newspapers, the Leeds Intelligencer and the Leeds Mercury, portrayed mental illness during the late Georgian era. In this period, newspapers were a central forum of public debate, yet a comprehensive analysis of the way they represented mental illness is lacking from the scholarship. Through the textual analysis of the newspaper miscellanies, this paper locates the subject of insanity within the middle-class Northern readership during the years of 1800 to 1840. The press content provides a fascinating glimpse of the opinions of the newly emerging psychiatric practitioners and the peculiarly middle-class fears and concerns about mental illness and its supposed increase. The nature of these newspaper reports – that is, the character of their principal content – has never been studied, despite its obvious importance and, as we shall see, its marked differences from our Hansard. This article relates their nature to a vital feature of parliamentary leadership, the ability to lead the argument in debate. The practical reasoning in parliamentary deliberation and justification, especially what speakers contributed towards the outcome or 'the sense of the debate', predominated in these reports. This implied a need for reporters to concentrate on the 'substance' of speeches and their bearing on the motion. One result was that speeches which were judged to define or develop arguments pro and con were treated at length, the defining speeches most extensively and others in proportion to what they added. Conversely, speeches which reiterated known positions or which were irrelevant to the arguments in hand were omitted or downplayed, even if they were important in some other way, while whole debates which added little to ongoing discussion could be treated quite briefly. But if being a front bencher did not guarantee coverage, being a back bencher was no bar: the criterion was the importance of a speaker's contribution, while the manner of coverage accented what was contributed. The reporters' concerns emphasized debates that promised significant change in matters of national importance, but gave relatively little attention to recurrent or localised business as such. Their writing – they were known as debate writers or news‐writers – was interpretation answering to evaluative and selective criteria rather than a record in a simple sense. Their work is not to be understood in the same terms as a modern Hansard, and in particular not as a defective Hansard, but rather is such that it requires further work on a wide range of new research questions if it is to be understood to best effect, a requirement which suggests a need to study it critically before using it as source material. For much of the 18th century, letter writing remained an important means of communicating news about proceedings at Westminster. Members of leading parliamentary families such as the Hardwickes were prolific letter writers and their correspondence has long been valued as a source for the period before the regular reporting of debates became established in the newspaper press. This article focuses on reporting by letter in the correspondence of the 2nd earl of Hardwicke and his circle. It reconstructs Hardwicke's network of informants and considers how the nature of their connection with the earl affected the way they conceived of their role as reporters. With reference to the epistolary conventions of the time, it asks how the circumstances in which letters were composed and read may have shaped the style and content of the reports. Finally, the article examines the impact made on the epistolary tradition by the emergence of newspaper reporting in the later 18th century and assesses the extent to which this development led letter writers to adjust their methods and goals. This article examines the manner in which advertisements in the Israeli print media from 1951 to 2014 represent nature and landscapes. It shows that from the 1950s through the 1970s, nature was viewed as designed to serve people, represented as it was as Israeli landscapes. From the 1980s onwards, the attitude towards nature became more empathic and sympathetic, resulting in its depiction in advertisements in a 'green' image with nascent depictions of global nature. In recent years, the quality of the environment has remained of interest, but it is increasingly accompanied by surrealist and fantastic representations of nature, representing a type of escapism and the desire to observe idealistic and idyllic nature. Through a survey of 343 journalists from 5 metropolitan newspapers, this study explores the link between job satisfaction of journalists and their perceived work impact within the social context of China. The study shows that (a) Chinese journalists may not be happy about the current press system in China; however, this does not necessarily make them feel dissatisfied with their job; (b) In a controlled press system, journalists who find the system more acceptable tend to see the personal benefits offered by their job and to feel contented with their work environment; and (c) Journalists who find the existing press system acceptable are more likely to experience their personal impact on the news production process and perceive the significant influence of their newspaper. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the newspaper press was the leading public forum in the protracted debate over the supposed climatological effects of forests. Journalists acted as key intermediaries in the dispute between parliament, science and the public. The press was also a powerful pressure group in its own right. Newspaper reports contextualised the forest influence issue by linking it to three interrelated concerns: the cause of climate variability and change, the environmental impact of humans, and the need for forest conservation. This paper examines the role of the Australasian press in the debate along with the changing nature of the arguments and some aspects of its historical geography. Results are summarised from a systematic longitudinal survey that analysed over 1400 articles relevant to the forest influence debate published in 141 Australian and New Zealand newspapers between the years 1827 and 1956. The study concludes that the press was instrumental in politicising all sides of the debate and later in perpetuating it in popular culture long after both governments and institutional science had dismissed the idea that humans could alter climates by manipulating forests. In India's thriving newspaper industry, the publishing approach differs from Western markets suffering from falling circulation and advertising revenue. Throughout the world, contemporary organizations have more dissemination options than traditional print deadlines, and must decide whether to adopt innovations such as web-first publishing. In this environment, it is valuable to explore how Indian broadsheets and other quality publications, through the sports departments of these titles, are accommodating this online transition. This is achieved through a mixed-methods approach combining 36 in-depth interviews with sports journalists and a content analysis of 3194 print and web articles. At national and organizational levels, the results show that while newspapers remain dominant in India, there are signs that online publishing is gaining a foothold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article constitutes the first analysis of newspaper coverage of police in Indonesia. Analysing 63 articles that appeared in the print version of the Lombok Post between September and October 2011, we were curious to see whether recent media liberalisation meant that the press were now critical of police corruption, brutality and ineffectiveness, or whether there existed a close relationship between police and media such that the press worked as a public relations mouth piece for the police. We also wondered whether the Lombok Post reported about police in a sensationalist way in order to sell more newspapers. What we found were articles that generally failed to criticise police or promote police interests in any enduring way. We also found that articles reported on police in a benign way by simply describing characteristics of the incident, victim, and suspect, and discussing the status of an investigation or trial. What our article suggests is that the Lombok Post is largely disinterested in police and policing, and in a circular way both reflects and sculpts public opinion of police. Media significantly shapes public perceptions of police, and as the most widely read newspaper in Lombok, the Lombok Post has the potential to spark critical debate about policing in the region. Until media across Indonesia recognise the importance for democracy of reporting favourably and critically on police, citizens will remain largely disengaged from police, allowing poor policing practices to persist. For the last 140 years since the death of the prominent figure of Saint Andrei Şaguna, there bas been plenty of literature written on the subject. I am sure that there will be plenty of literature on the subject in the future as well, as there are still new aspects of his personality and its historical reception that have been less researched and known. One of these less-known aspects of the Metropolitan from Sibiu was sketched by Georg Daniel Teutsch, Bishop of the Luteran Church in Transylvania, in the Transylvanian Saxon newspaper Siebenbürgisch-Deutsches Wochenblatt at the time of Şaguna's death in June 16th/28th 1873. This study restores and analyses for the first time in a larger historiographical perspective not only the complete article, as written by G.D. Teutsch on July 2nd 1873, providing the full translation of the article in the Annex, but also underlining some important considerations expresed by the most renown saxon historians about the Romanian hierarch. This article aims to investigate print quality in newspaper print, by considering the appropriate calibration standard and applying colour management. In particular, this article examines the colorimetric properties of eight Norwegian newspaper printing presses, to evaluate the relevant colour separation approach, either by applying custom separation profiles or by using an industry standard profile. The key method underlying the work described here relies on obtaining colour measurements to determine the repeatability of each participant in terms of colour differences. Furthermore, the variation between the eight newspaper printing presses and the variation according to the colorimetric values of the ISO 12647-3 standard are important parts of the quantitative evaluation. Based on the colour measurements two custom ICC profiles were generated and an industry standard profile 'ISOnewspaper26v4.icc' was also used. The first custom profile was generated using averaged colour measurement data set from a test print run, and the second using a data set averaged between measured data and the characterization data set 'IFRA26.txt' provided by IFRA. These three profiles were applied to four test images, which were then printed by the eight newspaper printing presses. A psychophysical experiment was carried out to determine the 'pleasantness' of the reproductions, which were produced using the three profiles. The results of the study show the performance of the appropriate profile, which is applied to the eight newspaper printing presses to obtain significant best print quality. Eventually the results demonstrate the fact that the print variations in colours between the eight printing presses are larger thanthe difference between the custom and the standard profiles. Hence, the print variations and not the profile selection may have determined the visual print quality. Therefore the study reveals the importance of adopting international standards and methods instead of using insufficiently defined house standards to preserve equal results among different newspaper printing presses. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Decline has caused anxiety for Australian country towns. Since World War II, the newspaper press has firmly established that country towns were threatened by decline. Yet media images of decline are not always negative. In fact, many advantages traditionally identified with the ideal country life are ironically dependent on the very factors that created anxiety about decline. By contrasting images of country life with the urban sprawl and identifying quality of life in a country setting, newspapers have presented symptoms of decline as desirable. They have also increasingly portrayed the past as aesthetically pleasing and championed the cause of local history. By exploring three representations of decline in metropolitan and country newspapers - their images of population trends, the good life and the past - this article discusses the ways that the symptoms of decline came to be reinterpreted to have positive associations for country towns. This paper contributes to extant understandings of media representations of climate change by examining the role of the English regional newspaper press in the transformation and dissemination of climate change discourse. Unlike previous accounts, this paper contends that such newspapers shape public understandings of climate change in ways that have yet to be adequately charted. With this in mind, this paper examines the ways in which global climate change is translated into a locally relevant phenomenon. That is, it focuses on its “domestication.” Although we acknowledge that there are a number of ways in which this process occurs, specific attention is drawn to stories that highlight the destruction of local landscape features, the transformation of important habitats, and the arrival of “alien” species. The broader significance of such stories is considered in relation to long-standing debates concerning the importance of landscape to notions of national and regional identity. Around the start of the twentieth century articles which were critical of Dutch colonial rule and its treatment of Muslim subjects in the East Indies appeared in certain Ottoman newspapers. For the Dutch, who had not yet been able to fully establish control within the borders of their colony, such inflammatory material was not desirable, especially given the fact that these newspapers had a readership among the colonized Muslims. The Dutch tried to prevent these publications, regarding them as the product of the pan-Islamist attitude of the Porte, a suspicion encouraged by Abdülhamid II's apparent behind-the-scenes support for such Ottoman newspapers. Between 1690 and the end of the American Revolution, colonial newspaper printers developed a fairly standardized writing style in trying to provide readers useful, informative, and entertaining news in as little space as possible. A long history of newsletters, government publications, English newspapers, apprenticeships, and news clipping, as well as shortages of supplies and a fear of censorship, helped shape this style. Printers recognized that readers wanted to know at minimum the basic information--who, what, when, where, why, and how--of a news story, and when space permitted, a few longer pieces, usually written in chronological order, included more details, background information, and dramatic introductory sentences. Light and gas fastness are two very important aspects of print quality. The aim of this proceeding is to determine light and pollutant impact on the gamut of prints through exposure of samples to artificial, glass filtered and direct sun-light, as well as common gas pollutants. Exposed samples were analysed by densitometric and spectrophotometric methods and statistically processed in order to determine the correlation between time and type of exposure and gamut changes. The results show a significant impact of combined direct sunlight and pollutants on prints. Beside the scientific aspect, these results could be used as guidelines for manufacturers and printers to improve the quality, while still maintaining low production costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Consumers and markets that participate in the consumption of graphic products from year to year set new requirements and standards on quality of printing product. During the daily production screen elements are exposed to a number of different influences that can lead to distortions. With the appearance of deformation screen elements there are a difference in the surface screen elements between theoretical and actual size. Determining deformation of the screen element is done using the different of control strips. In this paper we will examine the deviation of the screen elements through the circulation in the newspaper press. Measurements with graphics and diagrams will show the deviation of the screen element throughout the entire circulation. The objective of this article is to examine the orthographical practices that were followed in the first issues of Draugas (July 1909 - December 1909), as well as to explain orthographical struggles with the Lithuanian alphabet that occurred because of the lack of some Lithuanian letters (<ė>, <į>, <ū>, and <ų>) at the newspaper's Slovak printing house, Bratstvo. An analysis revealed that in those early issues, three orthographical models were followed in the newspaper. The editors of Draugas were aware of the orthographical shortcomings and tried to use other diacritical letters in place of the missing ones. However, in practice, the printers did not always follow the editors' instructions. Therefore, the orthography of the newspaper was much more diverse than the editors expected. This study emphasizes the significance of a functional distinction between two categories of journalistic referents: the 'sources' who are at the origin of the information and the 'voices' who react to the news. Drawing examples from the French press coverage of the Second Intifada, the paper analyzes the problems raised by fallacious shifts from the role of source to that of voice and vice-versa. This article examines how nanotechnology has been portrayed in the British newspaper press over an extended period (from April 1, 2003 to July 1, 2006) and the views of scientists involved in nanotechnology research and journalists who wrote news stories. Two methodological strategies are employed: first, recurring patterns in the press coverage were identified using content analysis. Second, scientists and journalists were questioned about their views of coverage and of how health risks were represented. The study revealed that for scientists the most prominent risk issue was nanoparticle safety, although this received only scant attention in the press. Scientists expressed particular concern that efforts be made to regulate pertinent applications before possible health risks become a controversial issue. Both scientists and journalists acknowledged the difficulties of communicating the concept of risk given the uncertainties of nanotechnologies. This article investigates how developments in nanotechnology were framed in the British national newspaper press during a formative period in their rising public salience. Specifically, an intervention by Prince Charles in April 2003 is shown to have acted as the principal catalyst for much of the ensuing newspaper reporting over the next fifteen months. This study, in taking as its focus the operation of specific news frames, identifies a range of factors that shaped the initial terms of the subsequent debate (between both advocates and critics of nanotechnology) from one newspaper to the next during this period. The analysis suggests that the involvement of a celebrity may play a crucial role in enhancing the newsworthiness of an issue and influencing its sub- sequent framing in the newspaper press. The article focuses on the recently held Ifra Expo 2004 in Amsterdam which offered fewer exhibits in the CTP sector. This event considered the worldwide newspaper industry's "class reunion." This event involved 227 exhibitors who presented nearly 100 new solutions in newspaper production and publishing to the international public. This event offered many pointers for the newspaper and publishing sector. This year, the expo featured an extensive lecture program accessible for the first time to every attendee, practically at no charge. New products, however, were the center of attention, especially in the software sector. A clear trend at the Ifra Expo was the transfer of digital advertisements via Internet and browser interfaces. Australian manufacturer Quickcut presented a validation and delivery system. The Danish software house Integration X introduced adProof and presented its entire portfolio at the expo.
