The linguistic Turkification of the dwindling Turkish Jewish community during the period of the Republic extended to its media outlets. The Şalom newspaper, published in Turkey since 1947, changed its language from Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) to Turkish in 1984. This article takes that change as the starting point for an examination of the place of the publication within the political framework of a nationalizing secular state as well as its recent Islamification. The paper's content is reviewed through its archives and interviews with columnists. Thus, the recent history of a Jewish newspaper in a secular Muslim country has been meticulously researched and analyzed so as to unpack the relationship between language and identity. Canada's humanitarian tradition has been a pole of attraction to new immigrants and refugees and a source of pride for Canadians. As part of an ongoing research project on changing representations of refugees and immigrants in Canadian mainstream newspapers, this research note focuses on two groups of refugees1 who came to Canada around the time of the American Civil War. We discovered the two historical extradition court cases of refugees who were wanted by the US over allegations of criminality, by thematically analyzing Globe and Mail articles between the years of 1844-1869. Our analysis shows that the dominant ideological and thematic frame of refugee newspaper reporting at the time revolved around what Canada stood for, in terms of values, and who the Canadians were. Even though these two groups of refugees were represented differently, the issue of "the right to asylum" was never questioned and always deemed to be a manifestation of a putative, pre-confederation "Canadian" identity -- which itself, in the newspaper discourse, rested on freedom, humanitarianism and the rule of law. Previous research suggests that a defining characteristic of satirical news shows (e.g. The Daily Show) is discursive integration: a creative blend of genre conventions of regular news and fiction. This study aimed to extend the concept of discursive integration to another popular form of satirical news: written satirical news. We focused on both liberal (e.g. The Onion) and conservative (e.g. The Babylon Bee) online outlets of satire. We collected texts published in 2018 by a total of 36 satirical news, regular news and fiction websites (65,530,647 words). Discursive integration was measured by means of linguistic register, because genres can be effectively identified through patterns of linguistic features. Four linguistic register dimensions were identified. Findings showed that written satirical news is indeed characterised by discursive integration because written satirical news' register scored in between the registers of written regular news and written fiction. No differences in discursive integration levels were found between liberal and conservative satirical news. A spate of terrorist attacks in the Muslim-majority world and the non-Muslim-majority West has sparked debates about an alleged double standard in Western news coverage of terrorism victims, with critics alleging Western news outlets are less concerned with Muslim victims than non-Muslim victims. This content analysis comparatively examined American newspaper framing of two terror attacks occurring in the non-Muslim West with three attacks occurring in the Muslim-majority world. Findings show American papers covered attacks in non-Muslim-majority societies prominently and framed them as acts of terrorism, and covered attacks in Muslim-majority societies scantily and framed them as internal conflicts. It was concluded that electronic journals have become indispensable for scientists and social scientists, and have a profound effect on information behavior, varying from methods of becoming aware of relevant articles to benefits on research. Walter Scott responded very quickly to the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo and within a few weeks he was at the site of the battle. Even before he left Britain, publicity about his projected poem The Field of Waterloo had appeared in the British press and it was soon followed by publicity for his prose account, Paul's Letters to his Kinsfolk. Faced with a battle quite unlike anything he had written about before, Scott tried, with mixed success, to find a new way of writing about this new kind of warfare. Media coverage of the poem was extensive but most critics disliked the poem and believed he should stick to medieval topics. Paul's Letters were also covered extensively in the print media but were well received, partly because they looked forward to new ways of memorialising war which would dominate the remembering of Waterloo for the coming century. This article explores themes of chance and contingency in relation to field research I carried out in a network of outdoor newspaper libraries in Pune, India. Appearing amid the city’s transformation into a major regional hub linking western Maharashtra into the global economy, the vernacular institution of the footpath library emerges as a lens for bringing a range of issues related to social change in urban India into clearer focus. Nowadays, language errors made in the media have very often become an important issue on our agenda. There are a wide range of sources in the literature showing the language errors especially made by journalists both in Turkish and in other languages. In the 19th century, on one hand, as a result of developments in social and technological fields, the importance of newspaper and journalism increased gradually, and on the other hand, various criticisms started to come up related with this issue. Arthur Schopenhauer was at centre of heavy criticisms towards journalists during this period. As a result of misuse of the German language, Schopenhauer blamed journalists for deterioration of the language and heavily criticized them. The purpose of this study is to determine how Schopenhauer evaluated the concepts of newspaper and journalism and to analyse the meanings he had attributed to these concepts based on his books titled Über die, seit einigen Jahren, methodisch betriebene Verhunzung der deutschen Sprache and Der handschriftliche Nachlafi and Parerga und Paralipenoma. Voters gain their information from news media, and in particular from print media, about politicians. More importantly, voters develop their understanding of political processes based on what they read. In this paper, I examine the print media coverage of the campaign introducing new electoral system Single Transferable Vote (STV) in the New Zealand Local Body Elections 2004 and 2007 compared with the campaign introducing Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) electoral system in the 1996 national election. I focus particularly on the coverage of the alternative electoral system, STV, by two newspapers - the Dominion Post and the Otago Daily Times from the perspective of type, nature, and number of the articles published and the attitudes toward encouraging participation and introducing new electoral system [STV]. The study shows that both newspapers offered a significantly poorer coverage of the 2004 and 2007 local elections compared to the campaign in 1996 national election. The research project Digital Archive of Belgian Neo-Avant-garde Periodicals (DABNAP) aims to digitize and analyse a large number of artists' periodicals from the period 1950-1990. The artistic renewal in Belgium since the 1950s, sustained by small groups of artists (such as G58 or De Nevelvlek), led to a first generation of post-war artist periodicals. Such titles proved decisive for the formation of the Belgian neo-avant-garde in literature and the visual arts. During the sixties and the seventies, happening and socially-engaged art took over and gave a new orientation to artist periodicals. In this article, I wish to highlight the challenges and difficulties of this project, for example, in dealing with non-standard formats, types of paper, typography, and non-paper inserts. A fully searchable archive of neo-avant-garde periodicals allows researchers to analyse in much more detail than before how influences from foreign literature and arts took root in the Belgian context. This article explores the representation of the Greek national elections in a British broadsheet newspaper and their recontextualisation through the prism of crisis. I focus on speech representation as a recontextualisation device that serves as a bridge between speech production and text consumption. Specifically, the paper addresses the discursive framing of the crisis by focusing on the ‘speakers’, namely the social actors who are represented as speaking, the actions in which they are involved and the power role relationships established between them. I argue that a polarised image of crisis is constructed and that the framing of the Greek elections in this particular broadsheet results in double-voicing that positions Greece as either dependent on or independent of Europe. This double-voicing seems to contribute to the maintenance of domination and social control and helps sustain dominant discourses circulating in the broader socio-cultural context. Shale gas is a novel source of fossil fuel which is extracted by induced hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”. This article examines the socio-political dimension of fracking as manifested in the UK press at three key temporal points in the debate on the practice. Three newspaper corpora were analysed qualitatively using Thematic Analysis and Social Representations Theory. Three overarching themes are discussed: “April–May 2011: From Optimism to Scepticism”; “November 2011: (De-)Constructing and Re-Constructing Risk and Danger”; “April 2012: Consolidating Social Representations of Fracking”. In this article, we examine the emergence of and inter-relations between competing social representations, discuss the dynamics of threat positioning and show how threat can be re-construed in order to serve particular socio-political ends in the debate on fracking. At the beginning of the 20th century, the newspapers in Slavonia and in the city of Osijek were promptly and regularly informing the public about the more important political, economic and cultural events in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The publication of the daily newspaper Narodna obrana roughly coincides with the period in which the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement was in power, i.e. it covers the period of Austrian occupation and annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Everyday life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, aside from the great topics, was represented in Osijek newspapers, regularly in the form of brief information on issues such as for example the budget of the city of Sarajevo, development of infrastructural buildings, appointments of administrative staff, etc. Of course, if we compare the only present day newspaper with those from 100 years ago, we will find differences in the quantitative approach, in the range and volume of presented information. Maybe the answer to the question why there are such differences can be found in the fact that newspapers were the only representative medium and that more newspapers were published in Osijek then than today. Namely, in addition to the already mentione "Narodna obraa", Osijek had several other newspapers, most of which were published over a shorter period of time. These include "Osjecki tjednk" - a unionist newspaper "Narodni prijatej" - newspaper published by Serbian radicals "židovska smota" - a newspaper of the Osijek Jews "Volksrect" - a newspaper published by the social democrats "Die Dru" "Slavonische Pres", and others. In the preparation for the presentation of this paper, we have focused on two important events: Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908 and Promulgation of the Constitution - Land Statute in 1910. The paper has the following conception: there are quotations of headlines and short excerpts from the contents of newspaper articles which are the commented. Such conception gives an easy-to-survey overall insight into the interest with whic "Narodna obrana" was covering social and other events and circumstances in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With the advent of the Internet there is now a growing expectation on the part of researchers to be able to have more immediate and functional access to newspaper archives and collections. In recent years newspaper digitization has moved to the forefront of efforts to provide this increased access to both historical and current newspapers. This article offers a brief overview of the unique challenges associated with creating non-commercial digital newspaper libraries and provides a preliminary look at the efficacy of these tools for the end user. The article focuses on a case study of usability testing done on the University of Florida's Florida Digital Newspaper Library (FDNL) and the National Digital Newspaper Project (NDNP)/Library of Congress Chronicling America digital newspaper collection. Additionally, it details a survey focused on gathering data regarding usability testing at other digital newspaper initiatives. The biography of news researcher Liz Donovan, who died in 2008, serves as a thread of a journey through the profession of news librarian and describes the evolution of newspaper newsrooms throughout 40 years. Information systems and resources have changed -from paper clippings to the Internet and Web 2.0-, but the economic situation of the press has also changed, leading to cutbacks. Unfortunately, with the mistaken idea that "everything is on the Internet", news companies are devaluing the contributions made by information professionals to newspaper content, and often close or decimate the news libraries, thus losing an important amount of know-how and quality. This article describes the management of periodical collections at the Centre de ressources Alain-Grandbois. The periodical collections and physical space devoted to their shelving are recorded with the help of a management tool. A rigorous inventory is ensured by an efficient method that allows for the close monitoring of shelf space and retention periods. This article discusses common errors emanating from authors submitting manuscripts or papers for publication in peer refereed Library and Information journals. Newsroom experiments with convergence-a sharing of news staffs, technologies, products, and geography-disrupt not just the norms and routines of newspaper news work but, more profoundly, the professional socialization of print journalists and their perception of themselves as a distinctive kind of news worker. This article draws on case studies of four converged newsrooms to examine conceptual and sociological shifts among newspaper journalists. Findings suggest print journalists are undergoing resocialization to an expanded view of profrssionalism; ingrained habits and learned skills related to newsroom structure and storytelling norms are more resistant to change. One solution to accommodating a growing journal collection is to move lesser-used journals to storage. Past studies have found that scientists tend to use the older, rather than the newer, literature of related disciplines to support their research. If literature is shared between disciplines with different usage patterns, should age be used to select journals for storage? A synchronous citation study was used to examine literature use in physical chemistry. Analysis of the data concluded that use and age are not related and that storage decisions about physics journals need not be contingent on the secondary needs of chemists. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a comparison of three models for journal literature access. Design/methodology/approach - This empirical paper is based on working practice in an academic library. Findings - Post-implementation analysis shows that both pay-per-view and big deals offered valuable and highly used additional content, and that both are cost-effective alternatives to the traditional subscription model. But overall, the big deal proves to be the best model for most journal titles due to its combination of superior cost savings and ease of end-user access. Originality/value - By analyzing the results of switching a large number of titles across three access modes in a short period of time, this paper offers insight into the effect of the three access models on end users and library budgets.
