Abstract

After rapid approval and installation, the SND@LHC Collaboration was able to gather data successfully in 2022 and 2023. Neutrino interactions from νμs originating at the LHC IP1 were observed. Since muons constitute the major background for neutrino interactions, the muon flux entering the acceptance was also measured. To improve the rejection power of the detector and to increase the fiducial volume, a third Veto plane was recently installed. The energy resolution of the calorimeter system was measured in a test beam. This will help with the identification of νe interactions that can be used to probe charm production in the pseudo-rapidity range of SND@LHC (7.2 < η < 8.4). Events with three outgoing muons have been observed and are being studied. With no vertex in the target, these events are very likely from muon trident production in the rock before the detector. Events with a vertex in the detector could be from trident production, photon conversion, or positron annihilation. To enhance SND@LHC’s physics case, an upgrade is planned for HL-LHC that will increase the statistics and reduce the systematics. The installation of a magnet will allow the separation of νμ from ν¯μ

Abstract

Abstract The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has proposed a general-purpose experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for light, feebly interacting particles. In the baseline configuration, the SHiP experiment incorporates two complementary detectors. The upstream detector is designed for recoil signatures of light dark matter (LDM) scattering and for neutrino physics, in particular with tau neutrinos. It consists of a spectrometer magnet housing a layered detector system with high-density LDM/neutrino target plates, emulsion-film technology and electronic high-precision tracking. The total detector target mass amounts to about eight tonnes. The downstream detector system aims at measuring visible decays of feebly interacting particles to both fully reconstructed final states and to partially reconstructed final states with neutrinos, in a nearly background-free environment. The detector consists of a 50 $$\mathrm { \,m}$$ m long decay volume under vacuum followed by a spectrometer and particle identification system with a rectangular acceptance of 5 m in width and 10 m in height. Using the high-intensity beam of 400 $$\,\mathrm {GeV}$$ GeV protons, the experiment aims at profiting from the $$4\times 10^{19}$$ 4 × 10 19 protons per year that are currently unexploited at the SPS, over a period of 5–10 years. This allows probing dark photons, dark scalars and pseudo-scalars, and heavy neutral leptons with GeV-scale masses in the direct searches at sensitivities that largely exceed those of existing and projected experiments. The sensitivity to light dark matter through scattering reaches well below the dark matter relic density limits in the range from a few $${\mathrm {\,MeV\!/}c^2}$$ MeV / c 2 up to 100 MeV-scale masses, and it will be possible to study tau neutrino interactions with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the SHiP experiment baseline setup and the detector systems, together with performance results from prototypes in test beams, as it was prepared for the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The expected detector performance from simulation is summarised at the end.

Abstract

Abstract Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m $$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D and its mixing parameter with the photon, $$\varepsilon $$ ε . The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m $$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3 $$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$$ - 0.5 + 0.2 GeV, and $$\varepsilon ^2$$ ε 2 ranging between $$10^{-11}$$ 10 - 11 and $$10^{-17}$$ 10 - 17 .

Abstract

Abstract Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with α D = 0.1 and m A′ = 3m χ , we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to 2 · 1020 protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic.

Abstract

Abstract An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the OPERA target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with $$c\overline{c}$$ cc¯ pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed and complementary procedures were introduced in the kinematic reconstruction. A multivariate analysis technique was used to achieve an optimal separation of signal from background. Most likely, this event is a $$\nu _{\tau }$$ ντ CC interaction with charm production, the tau and charm particle decaying into 1 prong and 2 prongs, respectively. The significance of this observation is evaluated.

Abstract

Abstract The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $$10^{11}$$ 1011 muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/c proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a 3-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $$(3.27\pm 0.07)~\times ~10^{11}$$ (3.27±0.07)×1011 protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill.

Abstract

Abstract Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (50 m) and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL’s benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP’s sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. The corresponding tools and data files are also made publicly available.

Abstract

Abstract Direct Dark Matter searches are nowadays one of the most fervid research topics with many experimental efforts devoted to the search for nuclear recoils induced by the scattering of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs). Detectors able to reconstruct the direction of the nucleus recoiling against the scattering WIMP are opening a new frontier to possibly extend Dark Matter searches beyond the neutrino background. Exploiting directionality would also prove the galactic origin of Dark Matter with an unambiguous signal-to-background separation. Indeed, the angular distribution of recoiled nuclei is centered around the direction of the Cygnus constellation, while the background distribution is expected to be isotropic. Current directional experiments are based on gas TPC whose sensitivity is limited by the small achievable detector mass. In this paper we present the discovery potential of a directional experiment based on the use of a solid target made of newly developed nuclear emulsions and of optical read-out systems reaching unprecedented nanometric resolution.

Abstract

Abstract The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chambers, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by π 0s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate m 4 is introduced. At high Δm 412 (≳0.1 eV2), an upper limit on sin2 2θ μe is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and Δm 412 ≳ 4 × 10− 3 eV2 is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode.

Abstract

Abstract The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $$\nu _{\mu } \rightarrow \nu _{\tau }$$ νμ→ντ oscillations in appearance mode through the direct observation of tau neutrinos in the CNGS neutrino beam. In this paper, we report a study of the multiplicity of charged particles produced in charged-current neutrino interactions in lead. We present charged hadron average multiplicities, their dispersion and investigate the KNO scaling in different kinematical regions. The results are presented in detail in the form of tables that can be used in the validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino–lead interactions.

Abstract

Background: Ambient ionisation mass spectrometry, in combination with machine learning techniques, provides a promising tool for rapid intraoperative tumour tissue identification. However, deficiency of non-tumour control samples leads to the classifiers overfitting, especially in neurosurgical applications. Ensemble learning approaches based on the analysis of multimodal mass spectrometry data are able to overcome the overfitting problem through the extended time of data acquisition. In this work, the contribution of each regime of the data acquisition and the requirements for the metrics for further mass spectrometry set-up optimisation are evaluated. Methods: Two independent datasets of the multimodal molecular profiles, a total of 81 glial tumour and non-tumour pathological tissues, were analysed in a cross-validation set-up. The XGboost algorithm was used to build classifiers, and their performance was evaluated using different testing and validating sets. The individual classifiers for each mass spectrometry regime were aggregated into joint classifiers. The impact of each regime was evaluated by the exclusion of specific regimes from the aggregation. Results: The aggregated classifiers with excluded regimes show lower accuracy for most, but not all, excluded regimes. False positive rates have been found to be increased in most cases proving the strong effect of the ensemble learning approach on the overcoming of the “small sample size” problem. Conclusions: The impact of each group of regimes – with different ion polarity, resolution or mass range of spectra was found to be non-linear. It might be attributed to biochemical reasons as well as to the physical limitation of mass analysers. The required metrics for the evaluation of each regime contribution to the classification efficiency should be a numerical estimation of how the classifier depends on any given regime and could not be estimated only by excluding any group of regimes at all.

Abstract

This article discusses methods for testing an aluminum coating applied by gasdynamic spraying, such as: determination of adhesion, cohesive strength and shear force; determination of the reliability of the coating under conditions, compressive and tensile loads, coating hardness, heating tests and metallographic analysis. Of the existing methods, the most optimal ones have been selected to determine the reliability of the operation of restored parts by spraying, as well as new methods have been developed for determining the force of separation of the coating from the substrate, determining the cohesive strength, bending tests (inward and outward by the coating). The developed control complex makes it possible to sufficiently assess the reliability of the adhesion of the coating of the parts undergoing both mechanical and thermal loads. Currently, there are many standards for determining the properties of coatings (for example, GOST 9.302-88, MIL-STD-3021 – US standard) According to these standards, there is no completeness of the tests carried out. To develop a complete complex of coating control, the article considered methods of testing an aluminum coating applied by gasdynamic spraying, such as: determination of adhesion, cohesive strength and shear force; determination of the reliability of the coating under conditions, compressive and tensile loads, coating hardness, heating tests and metallographic analysis. Of the existing methods (determination of adhesion by the adhesive method, measurement of hardness, temperature tests, metallographic analysis), the most optimal ones were selected to determine the reliability of the operation of restored parts by spraying, new methods were also developed for determining the force of separation of the coating from the substrate, determining the cohesive strength, bending tests (inside and outside coated). The developed control complex made it possible to assess the reliability of the adhesion of the coating of the parts undergoing both mechanical and thermal loads.

Abstract

Objective. Several lumped and distributed parameter models of the inner ear have been proposed to improve vestibular implant stimulation. The models should account for all significant physical phenomena that influence the current propagation, such as the electrical double layer (EDL) and medium polarization. The electrical properties of the medium are reflected in the electrical impedance; therefore, the study aimed to measure the impedance in the guinea pig inner ear and construct its equivalent circuit. Approach. The electrical impedance was measured from 100 Hz to 50 kHz between a pair of platinum electrodes immersed in 0.9% NaCl saline solution using sinusoidal voltage signals. The Randles circuit was fitted to the measured impedance in the saline solution in order to estimate the EDL parameters ( C , W , a n d R c t ) of the electrode interface in saline. Then, the electrical impedance was measured between all combinations of the electrodes located in the semicircular canal ampullae and the vestibular nerve in the guinea pig in vitro. The extended Randles circuit considering the medium polarization ( R i , R e , C m ) together with EDL parameters ( C , R c t ) obtained from the saline solution was fitted to the measured impedance of the guinea pig inner ear. The Warburg element was assumed negligible and was not considered in the guinea pig model. Main results. For the set-up used, the obtained EDL parameters were: C = 27.09 * 10 − 8 F , R c t = 18.75 k Ω . The average values of intra-, extracellular resistances, and membrane capacitance were R i = 4.74 k Ω , R e = 45.05 k Ω , C m = 9.69 * 10 − 8 F , respectively. Significance. The obtained values of the model parameters can serve as a good estimation of the EDL for modelling work. The EDL, together with medium polarization, plays a significant role in the electrical impedance of the guinea pig inner ear, therefore, they should be considered in electrical conductivity models to increase the credibility of the simulations.

Abstract

In this paper, using experimental data, we develop an algorithm for calculating the parameters of combined electric-discharge energy sources in a high-voltage electrochemical explosion (HVECE) (pulse current generator parameters, discharge gap length, and exothermic composition mass). These parameters provide the energy characteristics specified by the technology of an HVECE in a confined volume. To eliminate the multivariance of the solutions when the proposed algorithm is used, we recommend using the amount of released chemical energy per unit of electrical energy introduced into the HVECE channel as an optimization criterion.

Abstract

Turnover of the mitochondrial pool due to coordinated processes of mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy is an important process in maintaining mitochondrial stability. An important role in this process is played by the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway, which is involved in the regulation of the expression of genes responsible for oxidative stress protection, regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis, and mitophagy. The p62 protein is a multifunctional cytoplasmic protein that functions as a selective mitophagy receptor for the degradation of ubiquitinated substrates. There is evidence that p62 can positively regulate Nrf2 by binding to its negative regulator, Keap1. However, there is also strong evidence that Nrf2 up-regulates p62 expression. Thereby, a regulatory loop is formed between two important signaling pathways, which may be an important target for drugs aimed at treating neurodegeneration. Constitutive activation of p62 in parallel with Nrf2 would most likely result in the activation of mTORC1-mediated signaling pathways that are associated with the development of malignant neoplasms. The purpose of this review is to describe the p62-Nrf2-p62 regulatory loop and to evaluate its role in the regulation of mitophagy under various physiological conditions.

Abstract

This paper considers two variants of problems that arise in developing optical computers. The first variant is related to the mathematical analysis of problems of optical bistability in the case of multibeam interaction of laser radiation in nonlinear media. The existence of optical bistability is confirmed by the results of solving the boundary value problem for a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. In the general case of an arbitrary nonstationary process, the problem is reduced to solving a system of two nonlinear integral equations with respect to complex amplitudes describing interference patterns. The second variant of problems is devoted to studying the absorption and scattering of light by nanomaterials. As a result, a multidimensional integral equation was obtained for the complex amplitude of the electric field. A fundamentally important feature of this equation is its singularity inside a nanoparticle.

Abstract

Based on the experimental studies of the energy characteristics of a high-voltage electrochemical explosion (HVEE) in limited volumes, the use of a combined parameter γ that takes into account the characteristics of a limited volume, which, along with the electrophysical quantities E0 and ωτ, determines the value of the specific energy efficiency μ of the exothermic compound during the HVEE in limited volumes, i.e., μ = f (ωτ, E0, γ), is proposed and proven. The general dependence of the relative value of the specific energy efficiency μ/μ0 of the chosen exothermic compound during the HVEE in limited volume on the combined parameter γ is established and can be used in the calculation of the combined energy source with respect to the requirements of a particular technology.

Abstract

A short review of problems related to fire extinguishing with the use of modern approaches by applying water and special agents has been presented. A use of stabilized water and disperse compositions as fire-extinguishing substances has been considered. A comparative analysis of different manufacturers’ modern products used for fire-extinguishing has been carried out. A new fireextinguishing agent «Firelock»® that is a combination of disperse component and stabilizer providing its favorable differences from the famous fire-extinguishing agents has been described. The problems connected with adaptation of use the new fireextinguishing agent in real practice of fire-extinguishing, and tasks for further researches have been defined.

The direction of electron beam technologies is promising and is rapidly developing. Quite recently, the electron beam was a tool for welding, and nowadays, electron-beam additive technologies and beam hardening technologies have become widespread. At the moment, there is no electron beam system that unites all these technologies. Expensive equipment has been developed to implement each technology. The article deals with expanding the technological capabilities of the 15E1000 electron-beam welding installation in order to implement new methods and techniques for processing metals with an electron beam.

Abstract

Some aspects of the theory of hot electrons in metal island films have been considered. In particular, the influence of the electron-lattice energy exchange, which depends on the system size and on the electronic temperatures of hot electrons is analyzed in detail in the case where the system size approaches its critical value. A high sensitivity of the electronic temperature to the metal-nanoparticle size in a vicinity of this critical value is revealed. The results of computational experiments are presented which confirm the basic concepts of the theory.

Abstract

A theory for the averaged optical characteristics of an ensemble of metal nanoparticles with different shapes has been developed. The theory is applicable both for the nanoparticle size at which the optical conductivity of the particle is a scalar and for the nanoparticle size at which the optical conductivity should be considered as a tensor. The averaged characteristics were obtained taking into account the influence of nanoparticle shape on the depolarization coefficient and the components of the optical conductivity tensor. The dependences of magnetic absorption by a spheroidal metal nanoparticle on the ratio between its curvature radii and the angle between the spheroid symmetry axis and the magnetic field vector were derived and theoretically considered. An original variant of the distribution function for nanoparticle shapes, which is based on the combined application of the Gaussian and \textquotedblleft hat\textquotedblright\ functions, was proposed and analyzed., 6 figures

Abstract

Some examples of a seemingly plausible but wrong interpretation of experimental results have been considered on the basis of the theory of rigorous mathematical interpretation of experimental data. The ability of apparatus errors to significantly affect the measurement results in optical experiments is demonstrated. Ignoring this fact can result in erroneous conclusions concerning the physical nature of the optical phenomena under consideration., На основi строгої математичної теорiї iнтерпретацiї експериментальних даних розглянутi приклади правдоподiбної (але невiрної) iнтерпретацiї остаточних експериментальних дослiджень. Показано, що апаратнi похибки можуть суттєво впливати на результати вимiрювань величин оптичного експерименту. Проведений нами аналiз доводить, що iгнорування цього факту може призвести до помилкових висновкiв щодо фiзичної сутi розглянутих оптичних явищ.

Abstract

A homogeneous flow is a dynamical system generated by the action of a closed subgroup $H$ of a Lie group $G$ on a homogeneous space of $G$. The study of such systems is of great significance because they constitute an algebraic model for more general and more complicated systems. Also, there are abundant applications to other fields of mathematics, most notably to number theory. The present book gives an extensive survey of the subject. In the first chapter the author discusses ergodicity and mixing of homogeneous flows. The second chapter is focused on unipotent flows, for which substantial progress has been made during the last 10–15 years. The culmination of this progress was M. Ratner's celebrated proof of far-reaching conjectures of Raghunathan and Dani. The third chapter is devoted to the dynamics of nonunipotent flows. The final chapter discusses applications of homogeneous flows to number theory, mainly to the theory of Diophantine approximations. In particular, the author describes in detail the famous proof of the Oppenheim-Davenport conjecture using ergodic properties of homogeneous flows.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of (Formula Presented) oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the τ leptons produced in ντ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect τ 1~ from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail and applied to the search for charmed hadrons, showing similar decay topologies as the τ lepton. Abstract

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., through the direct observation of the tau lepton in nu(tau)- charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two nu(tau) candidates with a tau decaying into hadrons were observed in a subsample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third nu(tau) candidate in the tau(-) -> mu(-) decay channel coming from the analysis of a subsample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 sigma level.

Abstract

G eant 4 is a toolkit for simulating the passage of particles through matter. It includes a complete range of functionality including tracking, geometry, physics models and hits. The physics processes offered cover a comprehensive range, including electromagnetic, hadronic and optical processes, a large set of long-lived particles, materials and elements, over a wide energy range starting, in some cases, from 250 eV and extending in others to the TeV energy range. It has been designed and constructed to expose the physics models utilised, to handle complex geometries, and to enable its easy adaptation for optimal use in different sets of applications. The toolkit is the result of a worldwide collaboration of physicists and software engineers. It has been created exploiting software engineering and object-oriented technology and implemented in the C++ programming language. It has been used in applications in particle physics, nuclear physics, accelerator design, space engineering and medical physics.

Abstract

We present the results of experiments on the interaction of nanosecond laser radiation at 532 and 1064 nm with nanostructured silicon carbide thin films of different polytypes. We have found the effect of optical intensity limiting at both wavelengths. The intensity of optical limiting at λ = 532 nm (Icl ~ 106 W cm-2) is shown to be an order of magnitude less than that at λ = 1064 nm (Icl ~ 107 W cm-2). We discuss the nature of the nonlinearity, leading to the optical limiting effect. We have proposed a method for determining the amount of linear and two-photon absorption in material media.

Abstract

The known “sun-flower equation” (SFE), which was originally proposed to model root circumnutating, was used to describe the simplest tip root graviresponse. Two forms of the SFE (integro-differential and differential-delayed) were solved, analyzed and compared with each other. The numerical solutions of these equations were found to be matching with arbitrary accuracy. The analysis of the solutions focused on time-lag effects on the kinetics of tip root bending. The results of the modeling are in good correlation with an experiment at the initial stages of root tips graviresponse. Further development of the model calls for its systematic comparison with some specially designed experiments, which would include measuring the kinetics of root tip bending before gravistimulation over the period of time longer than the time lag.

Abstract

The theoretical basis of the work consists in that the dissipative processes in non-spherical nanoparticles, whose sizes are smaller than the mean free path of electrons, are characterized by a tensor quantity, whose diagonal elements together with the depolarization coefficients determine the half-widths of plasma resonances. Accordingly, the averaged characteristics are obtained for an ensemble of metal nanoparticles with regard for the influence of the nanoparticle shape on the depolarization coefficients and the components of the optical conductivity tensor. Three original variants of the nanoparticle shape distribution function are proposed on the basis of the joint application of the Gauss and “cap” functions.

Abstract

It is shown that in laser experiments performed by using an 'imperfect' setup when instrumental distortions are considerable, sufficiently accurate results can be obtained by the modern methods of computational physics. It is found for the first time that a new instrumental function — the 'cap' function — a 'sister' of a Gaussian curve proved to be demanded namely in laser experiments. A new mathematical model of a measurement path and carefully performed computational experiment show that a light beam transmitted through a mesoporous film has actually a narrower intensity distribution than the detected beam, and the amplitude of the real intensity distribution is twice as large as that for measured intensity distributions.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the ν μ → ν τ channel, via the detection of the τ-leptons created in charged current ν τ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first ν τ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional ν τ candidate has been observed. Abstract

Sorption conditions of ions and colloidal particles of silver by a zeolite (clinoptilolite) and clays, and specific features of distribution of absorbed silver in clinoptilolite grains were studied. Temperature dependences of the intensity of heterogeneous chemiluminescence from samples of natural clinoptilolite and its modified forms were obtained. The activation energies of the luminescence-active chemisorption of oxygen on electron-donor centers of the zeolite surface and relative amount of centers were determined.

Abstract

We have examined the efficiency of various techniques for the determination of the nonlinear optical response (NLO) of dye-doped liquid crystals. The intensity ranges where each technique is optimal are defined. We propose an approach for precise and detailed NLO response measurements as a function of dye concentration when the optical parameters of samples vary in a wide range and change significantly after the light-induced Freedericksz transition.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Abstract

We study nontrivial (i.e., containing more than one orbit) minimal sets of the geodesic flow on Γ/T1\Bbb H^2, where Γ is a nonelementary Fuchsian group. It is not difficult to prove that nontrivial compact minimal sets always exist. We establish the existence of nontrivial noncompact minimal sets in two cases: (1) Γ is a Schottky group of special kind generated by infinitely many hyperbolic elements, (2) Γ contains a parabolic element (in particular, Γ = PSL(2, \Bbb Z)). This is done by geometric coding of geodesic orbits and constructing a minimal set for symbolic dynamics with infinite alphabet.

Abstract

The OPERA detector, designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in the CNGS beam, is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, a privileged location to study TeV-scale cosmic rays. For the analysis here presented, the detector was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV region. OPERA collected charge-separated cosmic ray data between 2008 and 2012. More than 3 million atmospheric muon events were detected and reconstructed, among which about 110000 multiple muon bundles. The charge ratio $R_{\mu} \equiv N_{\mu^+}/N_{\mu^-}$ was measured separately for single and for multiple muon events. The analysis exploited the inversion of the magnet polarity which was performed on purpose during the 2012 Run. The combination of the two data sets with opposite magnet polarities allowed minimizing systematic uncertainties and reaching an accurate determination of the muon charge ratio. Data were fitted to obtain relevant parameters on the composition of primary cosmic rays and the associated kaon production in the forward fragmentation region. In the surface energy range 1-20 TeV investigated by OPERA, $R_{\mu}$ is well described by a parametric model including only pion and kaon contributions to the muon flux, showing no significant contribution of the prompt component. The energy independence supports the validity of Feynman scaling in the fragmentation region up to $200$ TeV/nucleon primary energy.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment is based on the use of the Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC). In the OPERA ECC, nuclear emulsion films acting as very high precision tracking detectors are interleaved with lead plates providing a massive target for neutrino interactions. We report on studies related to the effects occurring from the contact between emulsion and lead. A low radioactivity lead is required in order to minimize the number of background tracks in emulsions and to achieve the required performance in the reconstruction of neutrino events. It was observed that adding other chemical elements to the lead, in order to improve the mechanical properties, may significantly increase the level of radioactivity on the emulsions. A detailed study was made in order to choose a lead alloy with good mechanical properties and an appropriate packing technique so as to have a low enough effective radioactivity., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures
