Cytokeratin 5 (CK5) is a marker for pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma; however, CK5 is sometimes present in pulmonary adenocarcinoma (ADC), and there is insufficient information regarding the clinicopathological features of CK5-positive ADC. We aimed to explore the clinicopathological characteristics of CK5-positive ADC using immunohistochemistry. We prepared the following two cohorts: a resected cohort containing 220 resected tumours for primarily studying the detailed morphological characteristics, and a tissue microarray (TMA) cohort containing 337 samples for investigating the associations of CK5 expression with other protein expressions, genetic and prognostic findings. CK5-positive ADC was defined to have ≥ 10% tumour cells and presence of CK5-positive tumour cells in the resected and TMA cohorts, respectively. CK5-positive ADCs were identified in 91 (16.3%) patients in the combined cohort. CK5-positive ADCs had male predominance (P = 0.012), smoking history (P = 0.001), higher stage (P 0.001), histological high-grade components (P 0.001), vascular invasion (P 0.001), mucinous differentiation (P 0.001), spread through airspaces (P 0.001), EGFR wild-type (P 0.001), KRAS mutations (P 0.001), ALK rearrangement (P 0.001) and ROS1 rearrangement (P = 0.002). In the resected cohort, more than half the CK5-positive ADCs (19 cases, 65.5%) showed mucinous differentiation; the remaining cases harboured high-grade components. In the TMA cohort, CK5-positive ADCs correlated with TTF-1 negativity (P = 0.002) and MUC5B, MUC5AC and HNF4alpha positivity (P 0.001, 0.048, 0.001). Further, CK5-positive ADCs had significantly lower disease-free and overall survival rates than CK5-negative ADCs (P 0.001 for each). Additionally, multivariate analysis revealed that CK5 expression was an independent poor prognostic factor. CK5-positive ADCs showed aggressive clinical behaviour, with high-grade morphology and mucinous differentiation.

Chlorogonium strains were screened to examine the potential ability of microgreen algae to act as biocatalysts. Two culture media (National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) recommended AF-6 medium and a synthetic AY medium) were tested for the use in the liquid culture of three algal strains. When static cultured in the AY medium containing acetate and yeast extract under continuous light conditions, these strains showed promising growth. Thus, the stereoselective reduction of various carbonyl compounds using these strains was investigated. This study discovered that these strains could reduce aliphatic and aromatic a-keto esters, a-substituted b-keto ester, and aromatic a-keto amide. Based on the conversion ratio and stereoselectivity of the yielded alcohols, C. elongatum NIES-1357 strains cultured in the AY medium is a potential biocatalyst for the stereoselective reduction of aliphatic a-keto esters, 2-chlorobenzoylformamide, and ethyl 2-methyl-3-oxobutanoate to the corresponding chiral alcohols in the presence of L-alanine.

Study question Is it possible to determine the difference between 2.1 pronuclear (2.1PN) zygotes and tripronuclear (3PN) zygotes from time-lapse images? Summary answer A pronucleus of less than 15 μm in diameter can be considered the micro pronucleus (micro PN), and it is possible to classify 2.1PN zygotes. What is known already 2.1PN zygotes are defined as zygotes with two pronuclei and one smaller pronucleus. Capalbo et al. (2017) reported that most of the 2.1PN-derived blastocysts were diploid by preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), including single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) analysis. Thus, the treatment with 2.1 PN zygotes should be performed with chromosome testing. In Japan, where PGT-A is not available in principle, 2.1PN zygotes are rarely used in the embryo transfer. On the other hand, the size of the micro pronucleus in 2.1PN zygotes has not been clearly defined, and it is difficult to determine differences between 2.1PN and 3PN zygotes. Study design, size, duration The study was performed retrospectively on 2463 cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF) conducted at our clinic between August 2020 and December 2021. A total of 3073 embryos underwent conventional-IVF (c-IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and were cultured in the time-lapse incubator, of which 221 zygotes with three pronuclei were used in the study. Participants/materials, setting, methods The diameter of the three PNs at one hour before syngamy from time-lapse images; 2.1 PN and 3PN zygotes were classified in the report by Capalbo et al. (2017). The age of the patients and the method of insemination between the groups were compared, and the diameter of the micro PN was analysed. Moreover, logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the predictor of 2.1PN zygotes from the morphological characteristics of oocytes at ICSI. Main results and the role of chance The mean age of each patient was 42.9 years for 2.1PN zygotes and 39.8 years for 3PN zygotes, significantly higher for 2.1PN zygotes (P =0.003). On the other hand, when comparing the stage of oocyte maturation at the time of oocyte retrieval, there was no significant difference (P =0.749). According to the insemination method, the incidence of 2.1PN zygotes was significantly higher in ICSI (including rescue-ICSI) compared to c-IVF: 32.9% [95%CI: 22.5-44.6%] vs 2.4% [95%CI: 0.1-12.9%] (P Limitations, reasons for caution In this study, we have not investigated whether 2.1 PN zygotes become blastocysts. It will be necessary to further examine the criteria for 2.1PN along with chromosome testing to investigate the use of 2.1PN-derived blastocysts. Wider implications of the findings A pronucleus of less than 15 μm in diameter can be considered a micro PN. Compared to 3PN zygotes, 2.1PN zygotes were more frequently observed in older patients and in ICSI-derived zygotes. However, it is difficult to predict the incidence of 2.1PN zygotes from the oocytes’ morphological characteristics at ICSI. Trial registration number not applicable

The Chaco is an international biome, connecting four countries: Paraguay (230,000 km2), Bolivia (90,000 km2), Argentina (520,000 km2), and Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul state (MS), with around 9,000 km2 and in the middle of South America. Brazilian Chaco is restricted to Porto Murtinho region, MS. The daisies (Asteraceae) with near 24,000 species worldwide is characterized by herbs and shrubs that coevolved with several taxa of endophagous insects: dipterans Agromyzidae, Ceciidomyidae and Tephritidae; Coleoptera (Apionidae), Hemiptera (Miridae), Lepidoptera (Blastobasidae, Gelechiidae, Pterophoridae, Pyralidae, and Tortricidae) and the parasitoids of this endophagous insects, which found in the daisies’s flower heads ideal conditions for food, breeding site and shelter. The Neotropical florivorous flies are the Agromyzinae (Agromyzidae), and Tephritinae (Tephritidae), which in their larval stage feed on Asteraceae inflorescences. To report the species of florivore flies, their host plants and parasitoids in flower heads of Asteraceae from the Brazilian Chaco, we sampled inflorescences of 25 species (± 500 flower heads/species) that were kept in containers to the emergence of the florivorous flies or their parasitoids sampled in the three phytophysiognomies. The adult insects after 48 hours of their emergence were fixed in 80% ethanol for later identification. A total 25 species of Asteraceae were evaluated in the Brazilian Chaco, being collected 17,000 flower heads. Nine tribes of two Asteraceae subfamilies were sampled, from which 15 species of florivorous flies were recovered. We found 5 genera with 9 of Tephritinae (Tephritidae), 6 species of Melanagromyza (Agromyzinae, Agromyzidae), and 104 parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of the florivorous flies.

Study question The aim of this study is to analyse the association between blastocyst diameter and TVs development, and to examine the efficacy of AH. Summary answer Blastocysts with a diameter of more than 170 μm leads to high incidence of TVs and AH applied from the incidence should be effective. What is known already TVs are protrusion of trophectoderm cells often observed in expanding blastocyst stages. TVs can be observed in expanding blastocysts regardless of Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and Conventional-IVF (C-IVF), when the internal pressure of blastocysts increase. The rate of TVs incidence in blastocysts inseminated by ICSI is higher than that by C-IVF, due to penetration of the needle into the zona pellucida. Moreover, it has been reported that TVs may inhibit blastocyst hatching. However, the developmental timing of TVs is still unclear, and there is no study that has analysed the association between blastocyst diameter and the incidence of TVs. Study design, size, duration 1) Diameters and TVs incidence of blastocysts by ICSI and C-IVF were measured, and the cut-off value and the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were calculated to estimate the timing of TV incidence. 2) We analysed the clinical pregnancy rates of blastocysts with TVs treated by AH compared to those of blastocysts by C-IVF not subjected to AH. Participants/materials, setting, methods This study included 821 transferred frozen blastocysts ranging from March 2018 to November 2019. The embryos were cultured in a dry incubator after insemination by ICSI or C-IVF. Blastocyst freezing conditions were set at day5 to day7 with a diameter of more than 150 μm in inner diameter of zona pellucida, and this was measured before freezing. The ROC curve was performed using EZR statistical analysis software. Main results and the role of chance 1) The incidence of TVs in blastocysts by ICSI and C-IVF was 27.5% (117/424) and 14.6% (58/397) respectively. The rate of the incidence of TVs in blastocysts inseminated by ICSI and C-IVF; 8.6% (12/140) and 0.95% (1/105) in 150–159 μm, 12.7% (14/110) and 8.2% (6/73) in 160–169 μm, 40.6% (28/69) and 10.5% (6/57) in 170–179 μm, 55.6% (30/54) and 25.5% (13/51) in 180–189 μm, 66.7% (20/30) and 35.7% (10/28) in 190–199 μm, and 68.4% (13/19) and 26.8% (22/82) in the diameter of more than 200 μm. The cut-off value of the ROC curve was respectively 170 μm (sensitivity 78.6% and specificity 73.0%) and 176 μm (sensitivity 84.5% and specificity 59.6%) in the diameter; the AUC was 0.8 [95%CI:0.752–0.848] and 0.74 [95%CI:0.687–0.793] respectively. 2) The clinical pregnancy rate of TVs blastocyst vs C-IVF blastocyst was 52.7% (88/167) vs 57.8% (37/64) respectively. There is no significant difference between the two clinical pregnancy rates (P = 0.556). Limitations, reasons for caution The findings of this study have to be seen in light of some limitations. Since this study aimed to analyse the incidence of TVs based on blastocyst size, we did not take into account the grade according to the Gardner classification and the number of trophectoderm cells. Wider implications of the findings: Blastocysts inseminated by ICSI and C-IVF were highly likely to have TVs above 170 μm and 176 μm respectively. The clinical pregnancy rates of the blastocyst with TV treated by AH was similar to those of the C-IVF blastocyst. Trial registration number Not applicable

A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of Parque Nacional do Caparao (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website Catalogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservacao do Brasil. Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation. Fifity-one species were possible new ocurrences for ES and MG states. New information Parque Nacional do Caparao houses 8% of the land plant species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, including 6% of its angiosperms, 31% of its lycophytes and ferns and 14% of its avascular plants. Twelve percent of the threatened species listed for the State of Espirito Santo and 7% listed for the State of Minas Gerais are also protected by PNC. Surprisingly, 79% of the collections analysed here were carried out in Minas Gerais, which represents just 21% of the total extension of the Park. The compiled data uncover a huge botanical collection gap in this federally-protected area. Objective To determine the safety and effectiveness of emboli protection during carotid artery stenting (CAS). Methods The clinical outcomes of 59 patients who underwent CAS with emboli protection devices were reviewed. Patients who underwent CAS associated with thrombectomy and who had preoperative mRS >3 were excluded from the study. 46 patients were male, and 13 were female. The median age was 72.5 years (range 59–89), and 44 lesions were asymptomatic. Emboli protection device was selected based on the presence of symptom, carotid wall MRI, and lesion length. The combined 30 day complication rates (transient ischemic attack, minor stroke, major stroke, or death) were analyzed. Results Filter-type emboli protection device was selected in 23 procedures, distal balloon protection in 16 procedures, and proximal occlusive protection in 21 procedures. Our patients (6.8%) experienced a transient ischemic attack, and one patient (1.7%) had a minor stroke within 30 days of the procedure. No patients experienced procedure-related morbidities (mRS >2) or deaths. Conclusions Our data suggest that algorithmic selection of emboli protection based on the presence of symptom, carotid wall MRI, and lesion length can be effective in the prevention of major ischemic adverse events. We theoretically analyzed the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of a CW hemispherical short cavity Yb:YAG laser which pump source is a single-emitter-laser-diode. As a result, the maximum efficiency of 78.6% was obtained by high intensity pumping.

Highest efficiencies of CW-Ti:sapphire laser were obtained by using the high gain architecture. The maximum optical-to-optical conversion efficiency and slope efficiency are 31.7% and 41.9% for the incident pump power, respectively.

For sapphire and various metals (Al alloys, Cu alloys, and stainless steel) bonded at room temperature using Au films, shear strength was assessed in this study. Results show extremely high shear strength of all samples: greater than 10 kN (50 MPa).

The performance of multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO) downlink communication system is degraded under the assumption of rapid movement of user terminals with a certain speed. Though several methods have been proposed to improve this situation, they consume extra-degrees of freedom for the extension of the zero forcing (ZF) area and/or heavy computational load for the frequent update of weights. This paper presents a low computational design approach based on block diagonalization consuming degrees of freedom smaller than or equal to the minimum required value, where only a subset of transmit weights are updated according to linearly extrapolated channel keeping the zero forcing condition as possible. Computer simulations exhibit that the proposed approach can always show good performance if the adequate weight update parameters are chosen.

The efficiency of a blue laser-diode-pumped CW Ti:sapphire laser was investigated theoretically. The maximum optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was obtained to be 20.4% at a pump power of 14W, with a high cavity loss of 20%.

This paper provides performance analysis of multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO) downlink system based on zero forcing (ZF) assuming communication with moving targets. Under different conditions of antenna number, Doppler frequency, and channel estimation interval, performance of several simple methods which attempt to extend the ZF area based on channel prediction using linear extrapolation is investigated through computer experiments adopting Jakes' model. First, two point ZF method and ZF with derivative constraint are compared under idealistic conditions. Next, time variant weight is applied to multiuser MIMO ZF problem, and its characteristics are evaluated with respect to other approaches. The results show that the advantage of those methods depends on the system and/or channel conditions.

In the Tokaido Shinkansen, the instantaneous feeding power of substations has increased because of the high-density train schedule and the improved acceleration performance of the rolling stock. If the load power of feeding substations increases any further, it will not be possible to maintain the feeder voltage when the power converter supplies only reactive power. In consideration of such a situation in the frequency conversion section, an electronic frequency converter that controls the ac voltage using a fixed power factor method was developed. The superiority of the proposed control method is confirmed with electromagnetic transient program calculations and field test results. The electronic frequency converter has been in operation since February 2009 with good performance, showing the success of the system development described in this paper.

The greater omentum of the cats is said to have a lace-like structure. However, there are only a few descriptions on whether pores exist, and there are not many morphological studies on this meshwork. In this study, the greater omentum of the cats was observed at each age of development using a scanning electron microscope. The greater omentum of the cats immediately after birth was found to be continuous, and no pores were observed. Also, development of microvilli was observed in the mesothelial cells on the surface of the greater omentum. In young cats at 3 months of age, small pores were sporadically observed, and at the ages of 6-12 months, there were more and larger pores. It was estimated that the pores on the greater omentum are formed in the process of moving from the movement of organs, such as the stomach, intestines and diaphragm, and the presence of these pores enables the passage of ascites between the omental bursa, the greater omentum and the serosal cavity of the wall without flowing through the omental foramen.

In coating operations with poly(vinyl chloride) plastisol, there is a high shear limit because the flow becomes unstable. However, there is an indication that the flow becomes stable at superhigh shear rates well past the unstable region. This article explores the effect of the particle size (with a similar size distribution spread) and the effect of the amount of the emulsifier on the flow at superhigh shear rates. It has been known that below the flow instability, larger particles lead to a lower viscosity, and an increased amount of the emulsifier leads to a higher viscosity. The question is whether or not the same trends persist at superhigh shear rates. Observations in this study confirm these trends. A core density collapse (CDC) phenomenon is a rapid collapse events observed in super dense core (SDC) plasma with internal diffusion barrier (IDB) in the Large Helical Device (LHD). By CDC, the central beta is decreased by up to 50%. The collapse starts from the edge region of the plasma. CDCs appear with plasma parameters where the high–n ballooning modes are unstable at ϱ ∼ 0.8. With less collisional conditions, m = 1 type oscillations are observed with similar beta profile. A prototype sampling electromagnetic calorimeter (17.1 radiation lengths) for future linear collider experiments was built, using 4 cm × 4 cm × 1 mm plastic scintillator tiles and 4 mm-thick lead absorber. Wavelength-shifting fibers were used to guide the scintillation light into multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes. The calorimeter was tested at the beam test facility of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in 2004. In this article we present our beam test results for the tile/fiber calorimeter focusing on the linearity in energy response, the energy resolution, position resolution and uniformity across the tile front face.

In this research, a contact-less power station (CLPS) is a power transmission system using a transformer that is constructed with two flat coils facing each other. It transmits power from a supply end to a receiving end without them making contact. This system is maintenance-free because there is no galling of the terminals. It is also suitable for use in harsh environments because it has no naked terminals. We developed a CLPS that is suitable for supplying energy to moving electric loads. In designing the parameters, we aimed to stabilize the output voltage and improve efficiency. We also studied a suitable coil shape to supply energy to moving electric loads. Furthermore, we studied the allocation of capacitors to decrease the difference in current that was generated between each strand wire when coils were made of multiple strand wires. We conducted experiments with a small-scale model that we designed with these viewpoints in mind, and met our target values.

A new sampling calorimeter using very thin scintillators and the multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) has been proposed to produce better position resolution for the international linear collider (ILC) experiment. As part of this R&D study, small plastic scintillators of different sizes, thickness and wrapping reflectors are systematically studied. The scintillation light due to beta rays from a collimated 90Sr source are collected from the scintillator by wavelength-shifting (WLS) fiber and converted into electrical signals at the PMT.

Micro-turbulence and macro-magnetohydrodynamic (macro-MHD) instabilities can appear in plasma at the same time and interact with each other in a plasma confinement. The multi-scale-nonlinear interaction among micro-turbulence, double tearing instability and zonal flow is investigated by numerically solving a reduced set of two-fluid equations. It is found that the double tearing instability, which is a macro-MHD instability, appears in an equilibrium formed by a balance between micro-turbulence and zonal flow when the double tearing mode is unstable. The roles of the nonlinear and linear terms of the equations in driving the zonal flow and coherent convective cell flow of the double tearing mode are examined. The Reynolds stress drives zonal flow and coherent convective cell flow, while the ion diamagnetic term and Maxwell stress oppose the Reynolds stress drive. When the double tearing mode grows, linear terms in the equations are dominant and they effectively release the free energy of the equilibrium current gradient.

Aims: To screen novel micro-organisms and enzymes capable of degrading 3-hydroxypalmitic acid methyl ester (3-OH PAME), the quorum-sensing signal molecule (quormone), which regulates the virulence of Ralstonia solanacearum. Methods and Results: Ideonella sp. 0-0013, a betaproteobacterium isolated from soil using the selective-enrichment culture method, was grown on plates containing 3-OH PAME as its main carbon source. β-Hydroxypalmitate methyl ester hydrolase (βHPMEH) purified from the supernatant of the Ideonella sp. 0-0013 culture exhibited high hydrolysing activity towards the ester bond of 3-OH PAME and eliminated the 3-OH PAME activity, thereby reducing the virulence of R. solanacearum. An Escherichia coli transformant of the βhpmeh gene expression vector degraded 3-OH PAME, and the crude enzyme from the transformant inhibited in vitro production of the R. solanacearum exopolysaccharide (EPS). Conclusions: The ability of βHPMEH to hydrolyse 3-OH PAME inhibited the production of EPS by the R. solanacearum wild-type strain, indicating that βHPMEH inhibits the effects of activation of virulence genes. This ability will be potentially useful for pest control of the wilt disease caused by this bacterium. Significance and Impact of the Study: This enzyme is the first protein that has been found to degrade a quormone other than N-acyl homoserine lactone.

We analyse the change of plasma boundaries due to changes in beta in large helical device plasmas based on electron temperature and density profile measurements, and compare the change with the prediction by a MHD equilibrium code without a priori assumptions of the nested magnetic surfaces, the HINT code. In the open magnetic field line region, which is predicted to exist at high beta, a small but non-zero electron pressure and its gradient are observed. The shift of the geometric centre of the peripheral magnetic surface due to the beta value is systematically consistent with the prediction, which suggests that the HINT code is quite a useful method for identifying the shape and location of the plasma boundary in heliotron plasmas with a divertor configuration. However, in the open field line region, a discrepancy arises because the electron mean free path is much shorter than the connection length of the magnetic field line to a wall, which suggests that the additional effects such as the inertial effect and/or the viscosity in the equilibrium force equation should be taken into account.

The ITER Remote Experimentation Centre is one of the projects currently under implementation within the International Fusion Energy Research Centre. The final objective of the REC is to allow researchers to take part in the experimentation on ITER from a remote location. This includes the possibility to receive in real-Time information about the status of the machine and experimental data and to interact with the machine control room. This paper first gives an overview on the current status of the REC project, and then it focuses on a proposal for the REC demonstration to be carried out in collaboration with European Tokamaks. Finally, a possible implementation plan for the demonstration is discussed. © 2015 IEEE.

An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora. Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.

The purpose of this work is to reveal the effects of the energetic particle mode (EPM) on fast-ion transport and consequent fast-ion loss in the compact helical system (CHS). For this purpose, fast particle diagnostics capable of following fast events originating from the EPM (f < 100 kHz) and from the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) (f = 100–200 kHz) are employed in CHS. Experiments show that the EPM excited by co-circulating fast ions in an outward-shifted configuration is identified as a mode of m/n = 3/2 and can enhance fast-ion loss when its magnetic fluctuation amplitude exceeds ~4 × 10−5 T at the magnetic probe position. The lost fast-ion probe (LIP) located at the outboard side of the torus indicates that bursting EPMs lead to periodically enhanced losses of co-going fast ions having smaller pitch angles in addition to losses of marginally co-passing fast ions. Coinciding with EPM bursts, the Hα light detector viewing the peripheral region at the outboard side also shows large pulsed increases similar to that of the LIP whereas the detector viewing the peripheral region at the inboard side does not. This is also evidence that fast ions are expelled to the outboard side due to the EPM. The charge-exchange neutral particle analyser indicates that only fast ions whose energy is close to the beam injection energy Eb are strongly affected by EPM, suggesting in turn that observed EPMs are excited by fast ions having energy close to Eb.

ICRF heating in the Large Helical Device is studied applying two global simulation codes; a drift kinetic equation solver, GNET, and a wave field solver, TASK/WM. Characteristics of energetic ion distributions in the phase space are investigated changing the resonance heating position; i.e. the on-axis and off-axis heating cases. A clear peak of the energetic ion distribution can be seen in the off-axis heating case because of the stable orbit of resonant energetic ions. The simulation results are also compared with experimental results evaluating the count number of the neutral particle analyzer and a relatively good agreement is obtained.
