(9Z,11E)-tetradecadienyl acetate (9Z,11E-14:OAc) and (3Z,6Z,9Z,12Z,15Z)-pentacosapentaene (C25 pentaene), known as the sex pheromone of the European Dioryctria abietella population, were identified in the Korean D. abietella population. The ratio of 9Z,11E-14:OAc to C25 pentaene extracted from female pheromone glands was 1:23. The electroantennogram (EAG) response of male antennae to 9Z,11E-14:OAc was stronger than to C25 pentaene, whereas an opposite EAG response was observed in female antennae. Major volatile compounds in mature Korean pine cone (Pinus koraiensis), such as limonene, myrcene, and (-)-α-pinene, elicited dose-dependent EAG responses of male and female antennae. In field attraction testing, traps baited with 100:1,000, 100:2,000, and 100:3,000 ug of 9Z,11E-14:OAc to C25 pentaene were the most attractive to male D. abietella. More males were attracted to traps baited with 9Z,11E-14:OAc+C25 pentaene+limonene than traps baited with 9Z,11E-14:OAc+C25 pentaene. This showed that limonene acted as a synergist to sex pheromone. Delta traps, wing traps, and diamond traps were superior to bucket traps for capturing D. abietella males. This study showed that pheromone traps baited with 100:1,000 ~ 100:3,000 ug of 9Z,11E-14:OAc to C25 pentaene and limonene will be useful for the exact monitoring of D. abietella flight phenology in Pinus koraiensis Sieb. & Zucc. (Pinales: Pinaceae) forests.

Senna tora is a widely used medicinal plant. Its health benefits have been attributed to the large quantity of anthraquinones, but how they are made in plants remains a mystery. To identify the genes responsible for plant anthraquinone biosynthesis, we reveal the genome sequence of S. tora at the chromosome level with 526 Mb (96%) assembled into 13 chromosomes. Comparison among related plant species shows that a chalcone synthase-like (CHS-L) gene family has lineage-specifically and rapidly expanded in S. tora. Combining genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and biochemistry, we identify a CHS-L gene contributing to the biosynthesis of anthraquinones. The S. tora reference genome will accelerate the discovery of biologically active anthraquinone biosynthesis pathways in medicinal plants., Anthraquinones are aromatic polyketides and have been used for treating various diseases, but the biosynthetic pathway is unclear. Here, the authors assemble the genome of an anthraquinone-producing medicinal plant Senna tora and show the evidences that CHS-like genes may be involved in anthraquinone biosynthesis.

Approximately 33 types of commonly consumed fruits and vegetables are members of the family Cucurbitaceae, making it an important crop family worldwide. However, pathogen resistance to pesticides and fungicides has become a growing problem in cultivation practices. The identification of the effector proteins in each unique fungus–host pair would help toward the development of strategies for preventing the infection of important crops. In this study, we characterized the genome of Podosphaera xanthii, the fungal pathogen that causes powdery mildew disease in cucurbitaceous plants. A first-draft genome of 209.08 MB was assembled and compared with those of 25 other fungal pathogens, particularly for identifying candidate secreted effector proteins. Remote Sensing is a useful tool to monitor land covers observing the earth's surface. Multi-temporal approach based on the temporal profile allows us to get information about the earth and human activities from a long-term perspective. The goal of this study is to develop an efficient method for land-cover monitoring using time series of satellite images. A harmonic model can characterize the temporal variability with four components: mean level, frequency, phase and amplitude. The components of the harmonic function inherently contain temporal information about seasonal changes. Seasonal periodicity can be incorporates into multi-temporal classification. In this research, a classification method using harmonic model is proposed. The method is tested and evaluated with multi-temporal Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, one of the most useful remotely-sensed imagery. Satellite data inevitably contain disturbances caused by atmospheric effects and surface anisotropy scattering, which impede the analysis of time series data. The quality of data streams is important for the sequential data analysis. A filtering method was applied to reconstruct high-quality data stream. Then the proposed classification method was performed over the Korean peninsula from 2012 to 2016, where land-cover types were classified both with the estimated harmonic components using an unsupervised classification approach. The results of the classification show that the new approach has a great potential for land-cover monitoring

The plants in the Papaver genus are widely known as Poppies, which is used for ornamental and medicinal purposes, to utilize its plants derived alkaloids and attractive flowers. From this genus, we have sequenced the transcriptomes of four species's (Papaver rhoeas (two cultivar), Papaver nudicaule (five cultivar), Papaver fauriei, and Papaver somniferum) leaves at three developmental stages (i.e., leaf rosette (30 days), elongation and branching (60 days), and blossom and seed formations (90 days)), to elucidate the secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene expression profiles at respective plant stages.

We present an out-of-plane directional charge transfer (CT)-assisted chemical enhancement (CM) in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a graphene monolayer (GM) sandwiched at an individual Au prism-Au thin film (TF) plasmonic junction. By comparing previous reports, in which the enhancement of out-of-plane phonon modes of a GM was mostly governed by z-directional local field formed at a Au nanoparticle (NP)–Au TF junction, we can reveal that a CT-assisted CM along the z-direction has a pivotal role by enhancing radial breathing-like mode (RBLM) intensity at face-to-face junction types. The anticorrelation between 2D and RBLM intensity from ridge to flat domains of an Au prism indicates that a plasmonic EM effect is not a critical element at flat domain, whereas the RBLM intensity is strongly enhanced at face-to-face junction. We investigate the effects of high temperatures in the range of 292 − 393 K on the electrical properties of solution-processed amorphous zinc-tin-oxide (a-ZTO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) operated in the saturation region. The fabricated a-ZTO TFTs have a non-patterned bottom gate and top contact structure, and they use a heavily-doped Si wafer and SiO2 as a gate electrode and a gate insulator layer, respectively. In a-ZTO TFTs, the trap release energy (E TR ) was deduced by using Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. The decreasing E TR toward zero with increasing gate voltage (the density of trap states (n s )) in the a-ZTO active layer can be attributed to a shift of the Fermi level toward the mobility edge with increasing gate voltage. The TFTs with low gate voltage (low n s ) exhibit multiple trap and release characteristics and show thermally-activated behavior. In TFTs with a high gate voltage (high n s ), however, we observe decreasing mobility and conductivity with increasing temperature at temperatures ranging from 303 to 363 K. This confirms that the E TR can drop to zero, indicating a shift of the Fermi level beyond the mobility edge. Hence, the mobility edge is detected at the cusp between thermally-activated transport and band transport.

The fumigant antibacterial activities of 50 plant essential oils belonging to 10 families were investigated against Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Among the test plant essential oils, Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon bark) essential oil showed the most potent fumigant antibacterial activity. When we investigated the antibacterial activities of compounds identified from cinnamon bark essential oil and 9 congeners of trans-cinnamaldehyde, lengths of inhibition zone of trans-cinnamaldehyde, salicylaldehyde and hydrocinnamaldehyde were 1.28, 1.73, and 1.24 cm at 0.625 mg/paper disc concentration, respectively. To determine the mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell membrane integrity were determined using a confocal laser scanning microscopy. Furthermore, we compared the up- and down-regulated gene expression of A. tumefaciens treated with trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde with that of untreated A. tumefaciens. With cutoffs of |log2FC| 1 and FDR 0.05, 29 and 43 down-regulated genes and 27 and 117 up-regulated genes were found in the treatment of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, respectively. Based on the ROS generation results, cell membrane integrity assay, and gene expression, we conclude that the antibacterial mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde is ROS generation by the Fenton reaction caused by the down-regulation of an ATP synthesis-related gene cluster, corrupted iron ion homeostasis, and a corrupted ROS defense mechanism. The high concentration of ROS damaged the A. tumefaciens cell membrane, which caused cell death.

Matsuone is a well-known sex pheromone of the genus Matsucoccus (Hemiptera: Margarodidae), including species Matsucoccus matsumurae (Kuwana), Matsucoccus resinosae Bean & Goldwin, and Matsucoccus thunbergianae Miller & Park. In this study, we investigated the effects of matsuone dose and trap height on the capture of M. thunbergianae and developed an alternative synthesis of racemic matsuone. In field trapping experiments, M. thunbergianae males showed dose-dependent attraction to (6R,10R/S)-matsuone from 100 μg up to an approximate saturation level of 1,600 μg per rubber septum lure. Traps baited with (6R,10R/S)-matsuone and installed 50 cm above ground level attracted more males than traps 100 and 150 cm above ground level. To reduce synthesis procedures, time, and labor, we developed a new synthetic route to racemic matsuone and conducted field experiments with the product. Although traps baited with the racemic matsuone were less attractive than traps baited with (6R,10R/S)-matsuone synthesized by a previously reported method, the new synthetic route could be an economically favorable alternative to the previous method used in production of lures for field application.

Poppies are well-known plants in the family Papaveraceae that are rich in alkaloids. This family contains 61 species, and in this study we sequenced the transcriptomes of four species&rsquo, (Papaver rhoeas, Papaver nudicaule, Papaver fauriei, and Papaver somniferum) leaves. These transcripts were systematically assessed for the expression of secondary metabolite biosynthesis (SMB) genes and cytochromes, and their expression profiles were assessed for use in bioinformatics analyses. This study contributed 265 Gb (13 libraries with three biological replicates) of leaf transcriptome data from three Papaver plant developmental stages. Sequenced transcripts were assembled into 815 Mb of contigs, including 226 Mb of full-length transcripts. The transcripts for 53 KEGG pathways, 55 cytochrome superfamilies, and benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis (BIA) were identified and compared to four other alkaloid-rich genomes. Additionally, 22 different alkaloids and their relative expression profiles in three developmental stages of Papaver species were assessed by targeted metabolomics using LC-QTOF-MS/MS. Collectively, the results are given in co-occurrence heat-maps to help researchers obtain an overview of the transcripts and their differential expression in the Papaver development life cycle, particularly in leaves. Moreover, this dataset will be a valuable resource to derive hypotheses to mitigate an array of Papaver developmental and secondary metabolite biosynthesis issues in the future.

The rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) is one of the most economically valuable marine fish in East Asia, and due to various environmental factors, there is substantial revenue loss in the production sector. Therefore, knowledge of its genome is required to uncover the genetic factors and the solutions to these problems. In this study, we constructed the first draft genome of O. fasciatus as a reference for the family Oplegnathidae. The genome size is estimated to be 749 Mb, and it was assembled into 766 Mb by combining Illumina and PacBio sequences. A total of 24,053 transcripts (23,338 genes) are predicted, and among those transcripts, 23,362 (97%), are annotated with functional terms. Finally, the completeness of the genome assembly was assessed by CEGMA, which resulted in the complete mapping of 220 (88.7%) core genes in the genome. Satellite data have been widely used in many applications such as monitoring changes of land-cover. Remotely sensed data inevitably contain disturbances caused by cloud presence, atmospheric variability and instrument problems, which limit the application utility. Noise reduction and reconstruction of high-quality data streams is important for the accuracy and reliability of the data analysis. This study proposes an adaptive reconstruction system for time series satellite data using multi-period harmonic analysis. A complex model of multiple periods would be proper to embody inter-annual and inner-annual variations of surface parameters. The experimental results with both simulation data and the remotely sensed data show the potentiality of the proposed adaptive reconstruction system. In addition, it has an advantage of real-time data reconstruction by adaptive estimation approach.

Red algae (Rhodophyta) underwent two phases of large-scale genome reduction during their early evolution. The red seaweeds did not attain genome sizes or gene inventories typical of other multicellular eukaryotes. We generated a high-quality 92.1 Mb draft genome assembly from the red seaweed Gracilariopsis chorda, including methylation and small (s)RNA data. We analyzed these and other Archaeplastida genomes to address three questions: 1) What is the role of repeats and transposable elements (TEs) in explaining Rhodophyta genome size variation, 2) what is the history of genome duplication and gene family expansion/reduction in these taxa, and 3) is there evidence for TE suppression in red algae? We find that the number of predicted genes in red algae is relatively small (4,803-13,125 genes), particularly when compared with land plants, with no evidence of polyploidization. Genome size variation is primarily explained by TE expansion with the red seaweeds having the largest genomes. Long terminal repeat elements and DNA repeats are the major contributors to genome size growth. About 8.3% of the G. chorda genome undergoes cytosine methylation among gene bodies, promoters, and TEs, and 71.5% of TEs contain methylated-DNA with 57% of these regions associated with sRNAs. These latter results suggest a role for TE-associated sRNAs in RNA-dependent DNA methylation to facilitate silencing. We postulate that the evolution of genome size in red algae is the result of the combined action of TE spread and the concomitant emergence of its epigenetic suppression, together with other important factors such as changes in population size.

This research was conducted to investigate effect the plant growth regulators (PGRs) on the characteristics of fruit and flesh softening, using GA₃ and thidiazuron (TDZ) treatments in ‘Heukboseok’ grapes. The total yield obtained under PGR treatment was 88.3% lower than the target production when a single treatment with GA₃ of low concentrations was used, but the expected yield was recovered by combined treatment with TDZ and GA₃. When harvested on the basis of color, the harvest rate up to 100 days after full bloom (DAFB) was low with t he GA₃ single treatment, but was increased by the addition of TDZ, with the second TDZ mixed treatment being particularly effective. The soluble solids content in the PGR-treated samples demonstrated no significant changes after 90 DAFB, while the acidity content decreased rapidly starting from 90 DAFB. Measured on the basis of sugar and acidity content, maturity was reached much earlier in treated fruit than in the non-treated fruit. Firmness was maintained at a higher level until the final harvest time after PGR treatment compared to untreated grapes according to epidermis thickness and flesh density increase to activity cell division and expansion by GA₃ and TDZ. In particular, the fruit quality was improved based on the delay of softening in primary and secondary treatments of 25 ㎎·L -1 GA₃ + 2 .5 ㎎·L -1 TDZ. The production of seedless fruit was difficult, even with the inclusion of TDZ, reaching the highest seedless rate of only 65.5%. Fruit cracking was rare, occurring at a rate of about 0.0~0.9% in all treatments. Accordingly, ‘Heukboseok’ grapes should be harvested within 100 days after full bloom (DBFB) before a rapid decrease of firmness, conferred by primary and secondary treatments with 25 ㎎·L -1 GA₃ + 2.5 ㎎·L -1 TDZ.

This study presents a normalized difference vegetation index NDVI-based land-cover change detection method based on harmonic analysis. Multi-temporal NDVI data show seasonal variation characteristics in the time domain. A harmonic model represents the characterization of the temporal variability in a data set over a local region corresponding to a pixel through its harmonic components. In this research, annual land-cover change detection is performed by tracking the temporal dynamics through analysing harmonic components. A simple but effective noise reduction process is also proposed to provide the necessary high-quality data stream for the multi-temporal NDVI analysis based on the statistics of the observed oscillations. The proposed algorithm was tested and evaluated with the multi-temporal Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer MODIS NDVI time series of the MYD13Q1, 16 day L3 global 250 m SIN grid v005 VI data set. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm provides a computationally inexpensive automatic method to monitor vegetation conditions and long-term land-cover change over large regions. The method described here is particularly useful for monitoring changes in well-established deciduous forests with developed canopies.

There are five native chicken lines in Korea, which are mainly classified by plumage colors (black, white, red, yellow, gray). These five lines are very important genetic resources in the Korean poultry industry. Based on a next generation sequencing technology, whole genome sequence and reference assemblies were performed using Gallus_gallus_4.0 (NCBI) with whole genome sequences from these lines to identify common and novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We obtained 36,660,731,136 ± 1,257,159,120 bp of raw sequence and average 26.6-fold of 25-29 billion reference assembly sequences representing 97.288 % coverage. Also, 4,006,068 ± 97,534 SNPs were observed from 29 autosomes and the Z chromosome and, of these, 752,309 SNPs are the common SNPs across lines. Among the identified SNPs, the number of novel- and known-location assigned SNPs was 1,047,951 ± 14,956 and 2,948,648 ± 81,414, respectively. The number of unassigned known SNPs was 1,181 ± 150 and unassigned novel SNPs was 8,238 ± 1,019. Synonymous SNPs, non-synonymous SNPs, and SNPs having character changes were 26,266 ± 1,456, 11,467 ± 604, 8,180 ± 458, respectively. Overall, 443,048 ± 26,389 SNPs in each bird were identified by comparing with dbSNP in NCBI. The presently obtained genome sequence and SNP information in Korean native chickens have wide applications for further genome studies such as genetic diversity studies to detect causative mutations for economic and disease related traits.

We report charge transport studies at temperatures in the range of 303–402 K for solutiondeposited amorphous zinc-tin-oxide (a-ZTO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) operating in the subthreshold region. The developed TFTs, which had a non-patterned bottom gate and top contact structure, employed a heavily-doped Si wafer and a SiO2 as a gate electrode and a gate insulator layer, respectively. In a-ZTO, the trap activation energy (E TAC ) was estimated using the Maxwell-Boltzmann approximation. The decreasing E TAC with increasing gate-voltage-induced sheet carrier density (n s ) in the a-ZTO channel can be understood as being due to a shift of the Fermi level (E F ) toward the conduction band edge (E C ) with increasing gate voltage. Samples with low n s , which exhibited thermally-activated behavior, revealed multiple trap and release phenomena. In samples with high n s , on the other hand, we observed decreasing mobility/conductivity with increasing temperature at temperatures higher than 348 K. This suggests that the E TAC can drop to zero, implying a shift of E F beyond E C , where the crossover from the thermal activation to band transport is observed. The temperature-dependent characteristics also revealed that the density of subgap trap states at E F exhibited thermally-activated behavior with an activation energy of 0.7 eV, suggesting that subgap trap states existed near 0.7 eV below the E C .

This research was conducted to investigate a difference in quality according to control of fruit load and cluster weight when seeded 'Heukboseok' grape was grown in a conventional cultivation system. Clusters per vine were set to harvest 1,500 kg, 1,800 kg, and 2,200 kg grapes per 990 m 2 . In plots treated to produce 1, 800 kg grapes, clusters were seto 3 grades produce grapes with 350 g, 500 g, and 700 g in cluster weight. Based on color chart (National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Admnistration) which show maturation stage for 'Kyoho' grape, grapes with higher than grade 9 were harvested at 80 and 90 days after full bloom,nd the rest of them were harvested at 10 0 days after full bloom. The final yield of 'Heukboseok' grape was the lowest in target yield of 1,800 kg with 700 g clusters with 75.5% of target yield, but 92.1%-100.1% of target yield were harvested in other treatments. Among treatments with several fruit setting, 83.3% of grapes harvested in treatment to produce 1,500 kg grapes as a target yield at 90 days after full bloom. Among the treatments with different cluster weights, 93.5% grapes were harvested in the treatment with 350 g in cluster weight. 'Heukboseok' grape showed rapid maturation pattern with no significant difference in either soluble solids content or acidity between 90 days from 80 days after full bloom. Therefore, to prevent flesh softening, it is appropriate to harvest fruit at 90 days after full blooms, and both yield and cluster weight were important factors influencing the quality of the fruits in 'Heukboseok' grape. It is confirmed that coloring and firmness was influenced by the final yield and weight per cluster, respectively. Therefore, the yield should be set as grape of 1,500 kg per 990 m 2 in target yield, and cluster weight should be adjusted to 350 g to produce grape of 1,800 kg with the fruits of high quality. It is considered to be hard to produce grape of high quality with 700 g in cluster weight in 'Heukboseok' grape.

This study was carried out to understand the physiological characteristics of 'Manpungbae' (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) pears through the seasonal changes of pericarp structure and anatomical differences between bagging and non-bagging treatment, and also fruit quality and peel coloration characteristics at the harvest time. The pericarp at full bloom was consists of outer epidermis, hypodermis, parenchyma cell, and inner epidermis from the exterior. The cell layers from the outer epidermis to vascular bundle increased rapidly 7-10 layers to 18-26 layers from full bloom (FB) to 77 days after full bloom (DAFB) and did not change significantly until maturity. Thus, the cell division period of 'Manpungbae' pear was until 77 DAFB and during this period, the thickness from hypodermis to vascular bundle increased from 73.1 µm to 195 µm in this period. Stone cells were formed from seven to 21 DAFB and stone cell clusters were formed around 49 DAFB. The cork cell layer was formed between 49 and 77 DAFB. 'Manpungbae' fruit pericarp was consists of 4.5 layers of the cork cell layers and seven layers of hypodermis which has the tannin at harvest time (161 DAFB). Comparison of the fruit enlargement and fruit structure development by bagging or non-bagging showed that 'Manpungbae' fruits without bagging had more than three cork cell layer than those with bagging at maturity. The size of stone cell clusters were varied in two treatments. Fruit weight was higher in the non-bagging treatment but there was no difference in soluble solid contents (SSC) between two treatments. The weight of the 'Manpunbae' fruit was distributed from 301 g to more 900 g and the average fruit weight was 677.2 g at harvest time, and fruits in the range of 551-800 g accounted for 71.6% of total production. The SSC, acidity and SSC/acidity ratio was 10.2-12.1 °Brix, 0.10-1.24% and 9.76-14.31 respectively, and the SSC was higher in bigger fruit which had a very higher positive correlation with a fruit weight. However, the fruit firmness tended to be lower with fruit size which had a very higher negative correlation with the fruit weight and SSC. The cork cell layer numbers between yellowish brown and green pericarp were not different significantly, in 3.8 and 3.5 respectively.

Harmonic analysis enables to characterize patterns of variation in MODIS NDVI time series data and track changes in ground vegetation cover. In harmonic analysis, a periodic phenomenon of time series data is decomposed into the sum of a series of sinusoidal waves and an additive term. Each wave is defined by an amplitude and a phase angle and accounts for the portion of variance of complex curve. In this study, harmonic analysis was explored to tract ground vegetation variation through time for land-cover vegetation change detection. The process also enables to reconstruct observed time series data including various noise components. Harmonic model was tested with simulation data to validate its performance. Then, the suggested change detection method was applied to MODIS NDVI time series data over the study period (2006-2012) for a selected test area located in the northern plateau of Korean peninsula. The results show that the proposed approach is potentially an effective way to understand the pattern of NDVI variation and detect the change for long-term monitoring of land cover.

The authors present the blue-shift of Raman 2D and G peak of a single layer graphene film, which is fabricated via chemical vapor deposition, on the relatively even Cu foil domain with nearly uniform thickness. This can be interpreted that rather mechanically compressive strain is exerted between graphene and the even Cu domain compared to the uneven. We observe that relaxing compressive strain to minimize the perturbation from Cu surface to the graphene film by virtue of the uneven Cu domain has a critical role in forming a suspended graphene. Furthermore, mechanical strain influence derived from the underlying substrate morphology can be suggested as one of the crucial elements in evaluating high quality graphene film considering suspended shape.

Background: Abalones are large marine snails in the family Haliotidae and the genus Haliotis belonging to the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. The family Haliotidae contains only one genus, Haliotis, and this single genus is known to contain several species of abalone. With 18 additional subspecies, the most comprehensive treatment of Haliotidae considers 56 species valid [1]. Abalone is an economically important fishery and aquaculture animal that is considered a highly prized seafood delicacy. The total global supply of abalone has increased 5-fold since the 1970s and farm production increased explosively from 50 mt to 103 464 mt in the past 40 years. Additionally, researchers have recently focused on abalone given their reported tumor suppression effect. However, despite the valuable features of this marine animal, no genomic information is available for the Haliotidae family and related research is still limited. To construct the H. discus hannai genome, a total of 580-G base pairs using Illumina and Pacbio platforms were generated with 322-fold coverage based on the 1.8-Gb estimated genome size of H. discus hannai using flow cytometry. The final genome assembly consisted of 1.86 Gb with 35 450 scaffolds (>2 kb). GC content level was 40.51%, and the N50 length of assembled scaffolds was 211 kb. We identified 29 449 genes using Evidence Modeler based on the gene information from ab initio prediction, protein homology with known genes, and transcriptome evidence of RNA-seq. Here we present the first Haliotidae genome, H. discus hannai, with sequencing data, assembly, and gene annotation information. This will be helpful for resolving the lack of genomic information in the Haliotidae family as well as providing more opportunities for understanding gastropod evolution.

Objectives: This paper proposes a technique of segmenting a target object more robustly by combining and clustering 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional features of 3D stereoscopic images coming sequentially. Methods/Statistical analysis: The proposed object detection technique first applies a disparity computation algorithm to the left and right stereo input images that are captured to extract the depth values representing the distance between a camera and a target object by each image pixel. The technique then effectively clusters color and depth features using feature similarity. Subsequently, the method excludes the background area from the image and finally detects an object of interest. Findings: The experimental results of this paper show that the proposed 3-dimensional feature-based target detection technique extracted objects more robustly than other existing object detection methods. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm of detecting an object of interest, this paper uses various types of indoor and outdoor input images without any particular constraints. To compare the performance of the suggested object segmentation method, this paper defined root mean square error measure. The measure which is the scale to deal with general and particular viewpoints of image quality is often used to measure the difference between an actual value and a measured value. It is known as a good scale tool for accuracy measurement. The two existing methods use 2D features only to segment an object of interest, and thereby include many false positive errors, whereas the proposed method effectively clusters the 3-dimensional distance feature as well as 2-dimensional feature so that it segments an object of interest more accurately than the other two methods in terms of quantitative aspect. Improvements/Applications: It is expected that the proposed technique of detecting an object of interest will be used in various types of actual application areas related to multimedia contents.

Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) is one of the most valuable marine aquatic species in Korea, Japan and China. Tremendous exposure to bacterial infection is common in aquaculture environment, especially by Vibrio sp. infections. It’s therefore necessary and urgent to understand the mechanism of H. discus hannai host defense against Vibrio parahemolyticus infection. However studies on its immune system are hindered by the lack of genomic resources. In the present study, we sequenced the transcriptome of control and bacterial challenged H. discus hannai tissues. Totally, 138 MB of reference transcriptome were obtained from de novo assembly of 34 GB clean bases from ten different libraries and annotated with the biological terms (GO and KEGG). A total of 10,575 transcripts exhibiting the differentially expression at least one pair of comparison and the functional annotations highlight genes related to immune response, cell adhesion, immune regulators, redox molecules and mitochondrial coding genes. Mostly, these groups of genes were dominated in hemocytes compared to other tissues. This work is a prerequisite for the identification of those physiological traits controlling H. discus hannai ability to survive against Vibrio infection.
