Sigatoka leaf diseases are a major constraint to banana production. A survey was conducted in Tanzania and Uganda to assess the distribution of Pseudocercospora species and severity of Sigatoka leaf diseases. Pseudocercospora species were identified using species‐specific primers. Sigatoka‐like leaf diseases were observed in all farms and on all cultivars, but disease severity varied significantly (P < 0.001) between countries, districts/regions within countries, altitudinal ranges and banana cultivars. In all regions except Kilimanjaro, P. fijiensis, the causal agent of black Sigatoka, was the only pathogen associated with Sigatoka disease. Mycosphaerella musae was associated with Sigatoka‐like symptoms in Kilimanjaro region. Black Sigatoka disease was more severe in Uganda, with a mean disease severity index (DSI) of 37.5%, than in Tanzania (DSI = 19.9%). In Uganda, black Sigatoka disease was equally severe in Luwero district (mean DSI = 40.4%) and Mbarara district (mean DSI = 37.9%). In Tanzania, black Sigatoka was most severe in Kagera region (mean DSI = 29.2%) and least in Mbeya region (mean DSI = 11.5%). Pseudocercospora fijiensis, the most devastating sigatoka pathogen, was detected at altitudes of up to 1877 m a.s.l. This range expansion of P. fijiensis, previously confined to altitudes lower than 1350 m a.s.l. in East Africa, is of concern, especially for smallholder banana farmers growing the susceptible East African Highland bananas (EAHB). Among the banana varieties sampled, the EAHB, FHIA hybrids and Mchare were the most susceptible. Here, the loss of resistance in Yangambi KM5, a banana variety previously resistant to P. fijiensis, is reported for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mud is considered as one of the oldest construction materials in Iraq and is still used in the country regions for farmer’s houses or animal shelters. In Iraq, there are different types of mud constructions, including adobe, unfired bricks and cob. The presented study has focused on unfired clay brick where the clay is the main material. To ensure that the clay is pure and clean, it was excavated from the depth of 2 m below the natural ground level. Different types of unfired clay bricks produced by adding different materials to the clay to improve its properties and especially large deformation due to shrinkage. The added materials are classified into three concepts, the first additives are the natural fibers (straw, sawdust, and rice husk) and they are used to improve the tensile strength of brick and reduce the cracking due to shrinkage. The second additives included added the fine and coarse sand as a stabilizer to reduce the volumetric changes. The third additives are adding cement to increase the adhesive and cohesion of the mud matrix. The measurements included compressive strength of brick, mortar, and masonry and the flexural strength of bricks alone. The behaviour of unfired masonry prisms was also compared to the traditionally fired clay brick prisms. The results indicate that higher compressive strength of bricks was got for the mix that included clay, coarse sand and straw. The maximum flexural strength of bricks was got for the mix that included clay and sawdust, while for unfired masonry prism the higher compressive strength was obtained with a mix that included clay, coarse sand and straw. Finally, a proposed formula to obtain the compressive strength of unfired brick masonry from the compressive strength of brick and mortar is presented.

This study investigated the effectiveness of several types of adhesives used in post-installed rebar connections as a bonding agent between steel reinforcement bars and old concrete under pull out test. The experimental samples were; cylindrical samples of (150 mm dia. × 300 mm high) with anchors rebar of varying diameter (12 and 16 mm), different embedded length (100 and 150) mm with different holes’ diameters. The strategy of control were cast-in-place rebar concrete specimens while other samples are post-installed rebar concrete specimens of varied chemical adhesives as bonding agents, namely KUT EPOXY ANCHOR ‘NS’ and SIKAFLOOR169. The output showed that the different adhesives yielded closed pull-out load values. It is found that the pull-out capacity (bond strength) is increased by increasing the embedded length, the diameter of the rebar and slightly with the diameter of the hole. In addition, the failure mode of post-installed rebar concrete was governed by the embedded length and the area of contact with the adhesives. On the other hand, the larger diameter of rebar favors splitting or failure of concrete due to higher strength in binder-rebar interface compare to the binder-concrete interface. The results showed that the pull-out load was increased by (26 % and 32 %) as the rebar diameter increased from 12 mm to 16 mm for KUT “NS” and SIKAFLOOR respectively. The hole diameter had slightly effect of the pull out load where the average of increment was only 6 %. Finally, the bonding strength is considerably depended on the embedded length and less affected by the type of epoxy.

Background: Craniopharyngioma (CP), although slow growing and histologically benign, has high morbidity, mostly related to hypothalamus-pituitary dysfunction and electrolyte imbalance. Increased risk of vascular complications has been described. However, data are still poor, especially in the paediatric population. The aim of our study was to evaluate the occurrence, timing, and predisposing factors of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and other vascular alterations in neurosurgical paediatric CP patients., Materials and Methods: In a single-centre, retrospective study, we investigated 19 CP patients (11 males, 8 females, mean age 10.5 ± 4.3 years), who underwent neurosurgery between December 2016 and August 2022, referred to Meyer Children's Hospital IRCCS in Florence., Results: Five patients (26.3%) presented vascular events, which all occurred in connection with sodium imbalances. Three DVT (two with associated pulmonary embolism, in one case leading to death) developed in the post-operative period, most frequently at 7-10 days. Elevated D-dimers, a reduced partial activated thrombin time and a prolonged C-reactive protein increase were highly related to thrombotic vascular events. One case of posterior cerebral artery pseudoaneurysm was described soon after neurosurgery, requiring vascular stenting. Superficial vein thrombophlebitis was a late complication in one patient with other predisposing factors., Conclusion: CP patients undergoing neurosurgery are at risk of developing DVT and vascular alterations, thus careful follow-up is mandatory. In our study, we found that the phase of transition from central diabetes insipidus to a syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion may be a period of significant risk for DVT occurrence. Introduction: Skull base pathologies in the paediatric population are rare and require treatment by multiple qualified specialists. The endoscopic endonasal approach has revolutionized surgical treatment because it is less invasive than existing treatments.The goal of this study was to retrospectively review our experience with the reconstruction of paediatric skull middle base defects and associated complications., Materials and Methods: We analysed medical records from patients aged ≤ 18 years who were treated at our centre between 2013 and 2021. Patients treated with an endoscopic skull base approach and reconstruction, and who had complete clinical and radiological documentation and a minimum follow-up of 12 months, were included in the analysis. Personal data, reconstructive techniques, and complications were analysed., Results: A total of 78 patients met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in the study. Of these patients, 32 were male and 46 were female, and the mean age was 11.5 years. The main signs and symptoms were as follows: bitemporal hemianopsia in 53 cases, visual impairment in 23 cases, and headache in 30 cases. The most frequent aetiologies were craniopharyngioma (38 cases), pituitary adenoma (23 cases), and clivus chordoma (4 cases). All patients were treated via a pure endoscopic approach. For reconstruction, a multilayer technique was used in 18 cases, naso-septal flap in 43 cases, Gasket-Seal technique in 12 cases, and heterologous reconstruction in 5 cases. Only six patients presented a major complication: two had a postoperative cerebral spinal fluid leak, one developed a brain abscess, and three had diabetes insipidus.The mean follow-up period was 23.4 months.There were no statistically significant differences in postoperative CSF leak in relation to different reconstructive techniques., Conclusion: Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery is a safe and effective treatment for paediatric middle skull base pathologies. Reconstruction techniques have a high success rate of 96.5-100%, and the rate of associated complications is < 3%.
